Jaycee Dugard s A Stolen Life
The novel A Stolen Life isn t called a stolen life for no reason, Phillip Garrido literally stole 18 years
of Jaycee Dugard s life. Phillip Captured Jaycee at age 11 off the street as she was walking to school.
Phillip kept her captive for 18 years. Jaycee went through many major struggles in life that not
everyone would have been able to survive. Jaycee s conflict with Philip teaches the reader to be
thankful for what they have through Jaycees experience of her captivity. To begin, at age 11, Jaycee
was always an introvert, Very shy. Jaycee had a very close relationship with her mom and had a step
dad named Carl, who she did not get along with well at all. Phillip, a very manipulative man with
psychological problems, captured Jaycee ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She wasn t able to do basic things any typical human would have been able such as use a proper
working toilet or get a proper education from a school. Jaycee also was not being fed properly and
starved for quite a while. I m so hungry that s all I can think of. There is nothing good on television. It
s so nice having a TV to watch whenever I want to; I really shouldn t complain (Dugard, 59). Even
though Jaycee was in a very unfortunate situation, she was still thankful for being able to have a TV to
watch. Which makes the reader realize how to be thankful for even having a TV and having food
available to eat. Jaycee also had two children throughout the book. I am seventeen years old and about
to have my second baby (Dugard, 122). Jaycee having her children had a huge impact on her life. As
the reader reads through the good times and bad times with Jaycee s children, the reader will realize
Jaycee s kids actually saved her in a way and gave her hope to be rescued. Also, the reader can realize
even though Jaycee was very positive about having her children, the reader should think about how
thankful they are for being able to have children at the time in life they want

How Did The Industrial Revolution Cause Revolutionary Change
The Industrial Revolution began around 1750 and ended in around 1900. The revolution started in
Britain and then continued to spread to the rest of the world. The revolution brought new
revolutionary ideas that challenged earlier ones. It brought the answer to major emerging issues that
affected a vast majority of people across the world. The Industrial Revolution was a revolution of
celebration, for it created revolutionary inventions, new agricultural techniques, and social ideas that
caused revolutionary change, especially in women s status.
The Industrial Revolution brought inventions like the steam engine, cotton gin, power loom, and
spinning jenny, mentioned in the Ways of the World textbook. These inventions contributed to a
culture of innovation and also industrialized societies that had these inventions. In the second
Industrial Revolution, it focused on chemicals, electricity, telegraph, and the telephone, mentioned in
the Ways of the World textbook. The steam engine, invented in 1712, caused a massive change in
transportation worldwide. One of the major products of the steam engine was the advancement of the
railroad. It spread across the world transforming transportation and the global economy. The railroad
also amazed vast amounts of people who saw the marvels of these new form of transportations.

Inventions, like mechanical reapers, chemical fertilizers, and pesticide, changed agriculture in a way
that was never seen before. As a result of these innovations, countries, and factories were able to

In words of Barrack Obama, The road ahead will be long. Our climb will be steep.
Obama provides a simple yet strong illustration of the hardships and obstacles faced when
Striving for change. The statement made by Obama holds the same meaning when trying to
Change communities that are like Irvington. Both Martin Luther King and Barrack Obama have a
Superb comprehension of the extreme and diverse difficulties faced in African American
Communities. For instance King stated, One hundred year later, the negro is still languishing in the
corners of American society and finds himself an exile in his own land. This quote shines an
Illuminating light on the problems seen in Irvington, because we have allowed other
Communities to surpass us. While we quarrel and argue amongst each other, we do not see that we are
lagging behind the rest of New Jersey and The United States. This township is in critical condition,
because the sense of unity, dreams, and change has been lost. To revive our fair township of Irvington
we must recover from the phlegmatic state which we are so accustomed to and take action, or like a
house with a weak foundation the town will soon crumble to the ground. To begin improving the
living standards of Irvington the community, we must come together, scrutinize the community, and
solve our basic problems. Then, this township can advance. In the words

Comparing Marlow of Heart of Darkness and Willard of...
Comparing Marlow of Heart of Darkness and Willard of Apocalypse Now Whenever books are
adapted for film, changes inevitably have to be made. The medium of film offers several advantages
and disadvantages over the book: it is not as adept at exploring the inner workings of people it cannot
explore their minds so easily; however, the added visual and audio capabilities of film open whole
new areas of the imagination which, in the hands of a competent writer director, can more than
compensate. Heart of Darkness relies heavily on lengthy philosophical and expository passages, as
well as some very unusual and complex imagery; not the easiest material to rewrite as a screenplay
(Canby, 18). However, rewrite it Francis Ford ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Therefore, Coppola elected to change the character, the only similarity between the two being that
they are both normal people amongst lunatics, and are both outsiders Marlow never fits in with the
corrupt and immoral Company, and Willard does not play by the usual army rules (both characters are
uncannily similar to Kurtz in that respect). The similarities end there. Willard lacks the depth of
thought that Marlow has; Willard does not digress into lengthy ethical debates, or philosophize. Also,
he does not use imagery of any sort the strong, red eyed devils and the flabby, weak eyed devils from
the book are not mentioned (if Willard were Marlow, he would have admonished the army leaders in
Saigon for being flabby devils, for example), nor does he have any of the fascination with shoes and
other arbitrary objects and ideas that Marlow seems to. Willard also has no qualms whatsoever about
killing, whether it be innocents (the girl on the trading boat) or Kurtz himself; in the book, Marlow
had an abhorrence towards killing. These are mostly unavoidable differences, due to the different
settings. Marlow is an imaginative pilot who wishes to explore the Congo, having had a fascination
with the many blank spaces on the earth from childhood; Willard is a soldier through and through and
does not have time to moralize. Were these changes not present, then Apocalypse Now would have
been horribly off balanced,

Advantages Of Being Single
Have you been single for a while now? Here are 15 reasons why being single is not that bad at all.
When you are single probably all you think about is how awesome it would be if you were in a
relationship. After being single how quite some time, the only relationship that I enjoy lately is with
myself. This means no blind dates, no dating apps, and no set ups by neither friends nor family. This
means if some guy wants to get my attention, he really has to try hard and even then it possible I won t
be interested. It might sound arrogant, but I found happiness in small things like my pet and taking
care of my garden. My job, which I love, also gives me great feeling of satisfaction, fulfillment and

The Goal, By Eliyahu M.
The Goal, written by Eliyahu M. Goldratt, displays the life of a plant manager who is told that if he is
not able to shift the manufacturing plant within a constrained time frame to make money, the factory
will shut down. What s even more interesting about the novel is that it is based on the conflicts and
advances of a mere manager in a small company located in a small town. By introducing and
successfully implementing the Theory of Constraints , this manager was able to make this small
company that was on the verge of shutting down to have one of the most productive plants thus
making the factory more successful at the end. Alex Rogo, plant manager at UniCo, is told that he
needs to bring the plant around in three months and make it profitable. Battling between his personal
life problems (marriage) and problems at work, Alex just couldn t seem to make it work initially. He
targets all of the wrong factors like employing the right people and assuring he has the latest
technology. This is demonstrated clearly when Mr. Bill Peach, division vice president, discusses about
a seven week overdue order that needed to be shipped out that very same day. The first foul is seen
when Mr. Rogo handled the situation by forcing all the employees to work over time that night.
Although that order got shipped out that night, it is not an efficient or stable method to take care of the
problem. This is when Jonah, Alex s old physics professor, comes to the rescue. After Jonah s and

Overfishing And Its Effects On The Environment
In today s world most people do not care about the environment. People abuse the natural resources
that we were given for their own benefit. It is estimated that 60 percent of the worlds population lives
within 60km of the coast and that each year more than 2 billion tons of carbon dioxide is absorbed into
the ocean. Almost all of the problems with the ocean are man made. Ocean heath has deteriorated due
to humans depleting fish supplies, polluting the ocean, and a general lack of knowledge about just
how fragile the ocean is.
Overfishing is one of the largest and most relevant problems effecting ocean health today. It is defined
as The practice of commercial and non commercial fishing which depletes a fishery by catching so

Over the past several decades, humans have caused the health of our ocean to decline considerably.
Along with climate change and ocean acidification, overfishing has destroyed many marine
ecosystems. In the 1990 s, one of the worlds most abundant cod populations was quickly destroyed.
The Newfoundland cod fishery had been one of the most productive cod fisheries in the world.
Fishing for cod in Newfoundland had dated back to the 16th century, when the amount of fish seemed
endless. The Canadians had traditionally fished sustainably for cod using small boats and traditional
methods such as jigging or small inshore gill nets, but in the 1950 s and 1960 s other countries began
to join in on the fishing, using larger boats and nets. England, U.S., The Soviet Union, Spain, Portugal
and Germany all joined in on the action, increasing the annual catch from 250,000 tons to over
800,000 tons in 1968. From then on, the population slowly began to decline. With so many being
caught each year, the fish were no longer able to reproduce as efficiently and renew their numbers to
keep up with the demand. In addition to an increase in the commercial fishing fleets, new fishing
technologies were created to help catch as many fish as possible. Larger nets that dragged along the
bottom were created to catch every possible fish. These nets were killing young fish, other marine life,
and the food source for the cod, which eventually led to the entire

Design For The Contemporary Bedroom
Sleek lines, minimalist design, and futuristic accents are the signature elements of contemporary style.
From the flooring to the furnishings, here are seven design basics for the contemporary bedroom.
Contemporary Bedroom Design Element 1) Wall Color In a contemporary bedroom, the style is so
stark and simple that sometimes a bold wall color is needed to provide warmth and personality to the
space. The size of the bedroom should determine how much color to use. If the room is small, choose
a light neutral shade for three walls, and use the bolder darker color as an accent wall. If the room is
larger, painting two adjoining walls a bright color, opposite two walls of a lighter shade, gives a funky
contemporary feel to the room. Contemporary Bedroom Design Element 2) Flooring Hardwood and
tiled flooring are popular choices for contemporary rooms, but for the bedroom, you may want to opt
for a softer material. If you keep the hardwood or tiled flooring, a solid color throw rug is a versatile
piece that can add a pop of color and soft landing place for your feet. If you decide to go with a carpet,
keep the pile low. Knotted or berber carpet styles work best with the simple contemporary design.
Stay away from patterned carpeting and long material such as shag or plush loop which will make the
room look too busy. Contemporary Bedroom Design Element 3) The Bed For a contemporary
bedroom the bed design should be as simple as possible. Beds with simple headboards and low or

Abstract
This paper discusses the development of the automobile industry in
Malaysia in terms of production and sales of motor vehicles. The
Malaysian Automotive Policy has been the key impetus for the development of automobile industry
leading to the dominance of the national car in the ASEAN motor vehicle market since 1998.
However in 2003, Malaysia fell to second place after Thailand in the motor vehicle market of ASEAN.
Therefore, a comparative study is undertaken to asses the development of automobile industry of both
Malaysia and Thailand.

Cartons Short Story
There were two choices: mop the kitchen, or dump out two thousand cartons of spoiled macadamia
nut milk. Sadly we didn t get the first choice. The boys decided to mop the kitchen, which they
probably didn t know how to do. We got to work, two girls opening boxes, two more opening cartons,
and another girl and myself were emptying the cartons into the sink. It wasn t really that bad, only a
faint smell of something bad, I thought we got the easy job. That is until we kept working. Unloading
box after box the smell grew stronger. It smelled worse than a barnyard by the time we reached the
bottom rack. We stopped for a minute to clean up, the cartons were all broken and the garbage bags
were leaking milk. Our shoes were dirty and soaked and the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

was shaking and I feared I might pass out from the awful smell, but I continued, I only had two more
cartons. They were horrible. The bottoms were all green and flimsy, dripping milk all over the ground
as I rushed them to the sink. The job was done, until I turned around and saw the mess we left. I
hauled the giant trash bags over my shoulder and threw them up into the old dumpster in the back of
the building. By the time I was coming back in all the girls in my group had finished their break and
came back in to help, but I was all done. I mopped up the ground and the room lightened. Everyone
seemed pretty happy that they didn t have to clean up, I was pretty happy that I did clean up, I did the
best job. Our day was done and we were dismissed from our worksite. As we climbed into the van,
and I closed the heavy door, I thought so much, but most of all I thought about how our first day at

Benefits Of Going To College And Getting A Bachelor Degree
All high schoolers face the same daunting problem. What they are going to do with their lives. A
choice made as an 18 year old, determines future paths for the rest of their lives. Recently the subject
of going to college and getting a four year degree has become very controversial. HIgh school students
are choosing other alternatives, such as trade school, community college, or even not getting any
further education at all. However even with many other options, going to college and getting a
bachelor s degree is valuable for everyone. Going to college and getting a four year degree earns
individuals more money. Those people make 98% more an hour than those without degrees.
(Leonhardt 1) Over the course of a lifetime, a person with a bachelor s degree will make 1.1 million
dollars opposed to average of 393,000 over a lifetime of someone without a bachelor s degree. (Hamm
4) The more money one makes, the more opportunities one is offered. Traveling the world,
materialistic items, living location, providing for family, are all examples of opportunities requiring:
money. College let s one attain these opportunities by giving degrees that will earn people higher
paying jobs. A very big issue that people have with attending a four year college is the cost of college
tuition. College is very expensive. Even after paying a large sum of money, the average amount of
student loans is 30,000 dollars. (Bonder 1) The cost to get a bachelor s degree is 127,000 dollars.

Essay On Physics After The Discovery Of The Atom
PARTICLE PHYSICS AFTER THE DISCOVERY OF THE HIGGS
The world of physics had been developed a well established model of the atom. The standard model
had been pretty well tied up , with its group of 16 elementary particles and their nice set of rules
describing how they should interact. Physicists had observed until the Higgs discovery, 16 of these
particles. The crowd was already beginning to desperate for a 17th particle that would send the model
in new and wild directions (supposedly). But the Higgs particle ruined the hopes and expectations of
everybody: it turned out to be very ordinary: its behavior was just like the model said it would act,
obeying every theorized rule [2]. Therefore, the Standard Model is vindicated. And this was a ... Show

The weak force, on the other hand, is associated with particles called W and Z bosons, very massive
comparing to the other particles.
The Higgs mechanism is thought to be responsible for this, now that the existence of the particle is a
fact: if we recognize the existence of the Higgs field, the W and Z bosons mix with this field,
acquiring mass, explaining the reason of why the W and Z bosons have mass. This unifies as well the
electromagnetic and weak forces into the electroweak force. [4]
An interesting side effect, much less important than the discoveries, indeed, but with enough
importance for itself, is the validation of the large amounts of effort and money invested in the
equipment like the LHC. This flattens the road for the investment in the next generation of scientific
machinery to keep researching. After analyzing the facts, this money is going to be very needed in the
near future. It has been theorized that dark energy is the bulk of the energy of the universe, and the
dark matter and energy existence is neither explained by the Standard Model. This model can´t explain
gravity or the neutrino mass. Nowadays, scientific community knows that the Standard Model is an
approximation of another theory, more comprehensive and able to explain the Higgs mass with a most
natural approach. The reason is that the measured mass of the Higgs is about 100 million billion times
smaller than the value suggested by

The Issue Of Healthcare Reform
Healthcare reform continues to be a topic of discussion among politicians, medical professionals, and
many Americans who are struggling to pay for care in a system where costs are skyrocketing out of
control. Consequently these costs are forcing many Americans to file bankruptcy due to the massive
amount of medical debt that they owe, slowing our economy and reducing reimbursements for
medical facilities (Khazan) The debate on how to fix health care continues, even after the Affordable
Care Act was passed in 2010 to help begin our national journey to fix health care in America.

should fix our current system. Bernie Sanders is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many believe that healthcare in Canada is free when in fact if you look at it from a policy framework
view it is not. The healthcare system in Canada is financed by government enforced tax rates that vary
in costs depending on family size. income, and province location (Canadian Health Care). While the
federal government creates standards for health care, provincial governments make decisions in
regards to where hospitals should be located, how many physicians each location should have, and the
services that they will provide (Canadian Health Care). Ultimately, if the United States moves to a
single payer system, taxes will increase to pay for the program. The question that often is asked when
discussing a single payer system is how much will my taxes increase and it this cost more than I am
currently paying. This is most often where the debate begins. In 2013 the average tax dedicated to the
healthcare program for a family of 4 in Canada was $11,320 (Esmail). For a family of three with two
parents, the cost was approximately $10,989 (Esmail). This tax pays for all medical care and does not
require additional payments for co pays, deductibles, or out of pocket expenses (Canadian Health
Care). For a family of 4 in America the cost of health care averages $22,030 with an employer paying
$12,886 of that total cost and the remaining $9,144 being paid for by the employee (Esmail). This cost
includes payroll

What Really Sank The Titanic By Robert Gannon
In this article, Robert Gannon examines several flaws that were found decades after the Titanic s tragic
maiden voyage in an attempt to provide answers to the age old question that titles his article, What
Really Sank the Titanic? . Gannon begins the article by explaining various details of the well known
story of the Titanic s trip in April of 1912. The readers are reminded that the massive vessel was
considered unsinkable and disaster proof prior to its first trip at sea. After crashing into a large iceberg,
a few of the hull s compartments were destroyed and the ship quickly began to take on water. The
entire vessel sank in three short hours, and the exact causes of the disaster are still not fully

Expert Eyewitness
Court standards, rules, and regulations should be the same across the United States. This is a question
that can easily be answered, or at least it should be easy to answer. In order to find what the basis and
function of an expert witness are, it is imperative to check the standards of each state. The legal
system has created the expert witness role. However, the Rules of Evidence which consist of
consulting and testimonial evidence would not exist without the restatement of Federal Rules 701

General Aggression Model Of Human Aggression
Part 1. Violence
Mechanism of GAM
General Aggression Model (GAM) represents a theoretical basis for social cognitive integrated model
of human aggression, and aims at the interpretation of the connection between the motivation of
aggression, and the following aggressive behavior, aggressive effect (i.e., physiological stimulation),
aggressive cognition, (i.e., thoughts), reduced pro social behavior, and reduced empathy (i.e.,
emotional facets) (Anderson and Bushman, 2001; Barlett and Anderson 2013). As a process model,
GAM can be divided into two explanatory mechanisms; a) proximate and distal GAM (Anderson
Carnagey, 2004) or b) proximate GAM as single episode GAM and multiple episode GAM (see.
Anderson Bushman, 2001) as (long term) effects of repetitive violence viewing (Barlett Anderson,
2013).
In the single episode model, GAM describes a continuous cycle of interaction between
personal/biological and situational/violent media exposure variables/modifiers; situational input
variables influence aggressive behavior through their impact on the person s present internal state (e.g.
personality/hostility traits, emotions or attitudes), represented by cognitive, affective and arousal
variables. The present internal state of a person in GAM is the result of the interaction among between
affect, arousal, and cognition (i.e., the activation/priming of one of them leads to the activation of
other two) (Anderson and Dill, 2001). Sequentially, internal states influences

Another hypocritical scene occurs in the novel when the people of Maycomb make untrue judgements
about the Radley Place and its inhabitants. For instance, Scout states, The shutters and doors of the
Radley house were closed on Sundays, another thing alien to Maycomb s ways: closed doors meant
illness and cold weather only (11). It is duplicitous of the townspeople to scrutinize the Radleys based
solely on town gossip and the appearance of their home. The Radley home is intentionally used as an
excuse by the townspeople to isolate the Radleys since their way of living is not considered normal in
their eyes. Overall, numerous reasons can be found why people tend to be hypocritical; it is evident as
to why many possess this quality in Maycomb. Lee uses characterization, a crucial literary device, to
display to readers the lethal effects of hypocrisy in society. As Miss Maudie said, Mockingbirds don t
do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don t eat up people s gardens, don t nest in
corncribs, they don t do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That s why it s a sin to kill a
mockingbird (119). Despite his innocence and role of a mockingbird, Tom was condemned guilty of
rape and shot 17 times. Mayella herself believes in beauty in an ugly world yet her heinous actions
caused her to be a part of that ugliness. Humans often appear to be hypocritical when they attempt to
prove a point, yet their behavior

Descriptive Flight
Hurry up! Get all your things ready! We leave in five minutes! exclaimed mom. It was three o clock in
the morning and we were going on our spring break vacation to sunny Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. I
remember being very excited and anxious to get on the airplane. I am very traditional and make sure
after all of the dreaded security and airport nonsense that we always go to the same bagel restaurant.
This always got the vacation started for me. After boarding the airplane and getting up into the
maximum altitude, I am always rest assured that in another two hours, we will be on the ground in
Florida 1,000 miles away from home. On the plane ride, I find it hard to keep still but I fell asleep and
before I knew it, the pilot was announcing, Flight Attendants, prepare for landing. This is where I
make sure I have all my belongings and begin to watch the what looked like dots on the ground turn
into trees, cars, and buildings. Soon after that, the final bump of the landing process that is usually felt
strongly throughout the plane wasn t present, and people clapped for such a smooth landing.
Next came my least favorite part, retrieving our bags from the baggage claim. This is always a
stressful part of traveling, but during this particular trip, it was exceptionally annoying. The conveyor
belt broke causing all of the luggage to be stopped up in the slot. This caused tremendous crowding
and aggravation for travelers in the Jacksonville International Airport.

Essay on Economic Repercussions of Tourism in the Caribbean
Economic Repercussions of Tourism in the Caribbean
The tourism industry is one of the largest contributors to the world
GDP. It employs millions worldwide and provides a livelihood for nations and individuals alike.
Focussing on a more specific economy the economy of the Caribbean a similar picture emerges. Much
of the population has found employment in industries directly related to tourism and many more have
done so in industries indirectly related to tourism. Albeit, there lurks a reality that defies this rosy
illusion.
The adverse effects of tourism on the economy are many and significant. In the long run, few clear
advantages are visible. For countries of the Caribbean, that support their total national revenue ...

Since the islands rely so heavily upon the flow of capital from the tourist sector, they can easily be
devastated financially if even the slightest natural phenomena occur. Volcanoes and hurricanes two
common and well known natural disasters are quite frequent in the Caribbean, owing to the physical
geography of the regions. Such events can easily deter potential tourists and sent the economy into a
downward spiraling recession, amplifying the challenge of recovery.
The increased demand for goods that ensues subsequent to the establishment of tourism as the primary
contributor to national income leads to an unprecedented demand for products and services. And as
according to the dictates of the laws of supply and demand, as inflation beings to skyrocket, the
purchasing power parity of individuals plummets. This imbalance between an extremely high
aggregate demand and a relatively inelastic aggregate supply (in part due to the short time frame)
places locals in a difficult position.
High costs of living necessitate drastic changes in traditional lifestyles and often lead to poverty; these
events in turn result in even greater social and economic chaos.
Unlike the development of high tech industries by public and private sector contributions, heavy
investment in tourism yields few other advantages, especially in digital communications networks. To

The Benefits Of Dependence On Technology
In recent years, technology has taken huge steps forward. Things that past generations only dreamed
of have come to fruition. Undoubtedly, technology has presented the world with numerous benefits

all of life s questions lie just one click of tap away. Self driving cars loom large on the horizon.
Technology has made people s lives so much easier and better, or has it? While technology has

Personally, I have experienced this in my own life. Although I do not use social media, I have used
Google Hangouts on occasion. When using Hangouts, I have found myself chatting superficially about
random issues with my friends and not truly making friendships. At times, I have spent time with other
people, almost all of them texting away on their phones, oblivious to their surroundings. Also, people
tend to project a superficial image of their lives that makes their lives seem wonderful and perfect.
Sometimes, this can lead others to feel depressed that their lives seem so much worse. Relationships
encapsulate much more that what social media provides. Thirdly, technology presents dangers to
online security. Nowadays, the threat of cyberattacks exists in a very real way. Since technology
dominates culture, hackers can possibly access virtually everyone s personal information. Over four
billion people had their identities stolen last year according to the Business Insider (Cole). In addition,
sixty four percent of Americans have experienced some form of data theft, according to the Pew

Marius Pontmercy s Rebellion Against The French Government
Marius Pontmercy should not be convicted for his participation in the rebellion against the French
government because it was not a direct assault on the government. First, the friends of Marius were
very involved in the uprising and Marius felt an obligation to support his friends in their cause since
they had been so supportive of him. Second, Marius father, Georges Pontmercy, was a soldier in
Napoleon s army. He was dedicated to a cause he believed in and because Marius had a great respect
for his father, he probably wanted to honor his legacy by following that example determination.
Finally, the night of the uprising was the night Maris learned of Jean Valjean s plan to leave with his
daughter Cosette. Since Marius loved Cosette he was utterly devastated to discover she was leaving
him. This shock caused him to feel as though there were no purpose to his life so his involvement in
the barricade was a way to escape his depression. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Morality Essay
Morality
Is morality relative? Ruth Benedict and James Rachels have opposing views on this conroversial
question. Benedict, a foremost American anthropologist who taught at Columbia University (Pojman
370) believes that morality is relative to one s culture and that one s behavior which is deemed moral
or immoral is dependent upon cultural norms. Her argument is as such: 1. Different cultures have
radically different moral codes 2. There are no objective moral principles i.e. all moral principles are
culturally relative
Rachels, a professor at the University of Alabama (Pojman 375) disagrees with Benedict and believes
that morality is not relative. Furthermore he holds Benedicts Cultural differences argument to be ...

For instance, some African tribes are known to sew a woman s vagina closed when she is young to
prevent her from being able to have intercourse before she is married.; If she is not sytill sewn shut on
her wedding night, she is cast out and considered a filthy whore. To our culture, this seem entirely too
drastic, but to those tribes, this is a ritual that has been practiced throughout their history and is
considered a rite of passage when a girl reaches puberty. Benedicts also gives an example to further
prove her point that morality and or normality is culturally relative. She gives the example of a man in
a Melanesian society who was referred to as silly and simple and definitely crfazy because he liked to
share and to help people and do nice things for them. In the United States , these are virtuous qualities.
If you are stingy and not helpful you are looked down upon, but in this contrasting society, to share
and be helpful is so disgraceful that one is ridiculed for possessing thaose traits or even condemned for
them. One who believes that morality is relative could give further example of traits that are despised
in one culture but admired in a different culture. History and evolution provide codes of what is
accepted in a culture, things such as sorcery, homosexuality, polygamy, male dominance, euthanasia,
these things are completely dependant upon its society to

The Athenian Assembly Of Build A Fleet Of Triremes
According to Herodotus Histories book he states Themistocles convinces the Athenian assembly to
build a fleet of triremes , which will be explained more as you read on. Both sides had very similar
ships the Triremes which were 40 50 ton wooden warships up to 40 m long. Light, streamlined, and
manoeuvrable, they were powered in battle by 170 oarsmen split in three ranks down each side of the
ship. They were able to rapidly accelerate, break, zigzag, and turn 360 degrees in just two ships
lengths, good seamanship could place the vessel to best advantage and employ the principal strategy
of naval warfare at that time which was to ram the enemy. The way the Greeks prepared for the battle
was, they had 371 triremes and pentekonters which were smaller fifty oared ship, successfully under
Themistocles, but officially led by the spartan Eurybiades. According to Herodotus he mentions that
The Athenians with 182 ships, half the whole fleet, 40 from Corinth; 30 from Aegina; 20 from
Megara; 20 from Chalcis; 16 from Lacedaemon (Sparta), 15 from Sicyon; 10 from Epidaurus; 7 from
Ambracia; 7 from Eretria; 5 from Troezen; 4 from Naxos; 3 from Hermione; 3 from Leucas; 2 from
Ceos; 2 from Styra; 1 from Croton; and 1 from Cynthus. The total number of warships was 368 .

Wideman Vs. Limerick Essay
John Edgar Wideman s Our Time , and Patricia Nelson Limerick s Empire of Innocence , are two very
different stories about one particular theme. In these selections both authors are writing history.
Wideman is writing the history of his brother s life, and Limerick is writing the history of the old west.
Although the theme is the same, the two authors styles, methods, and writing concerns differ greatly.
In the following passage from Our Time , John is visiting his brother, Robby, in prison. While
listening to Robby s story, John begins to question the type of book this project will become:
The business of making a book together was new for both of us. Difficult. Awkward. Another book

If I don t speak I have no past. Except the nothing, the emptiness. My brother s memories are not
mine, so I have to break into the silence with my own version of the past. My words. My whistling in
the dark. His story freeing me, because it forces me to tell my own. (Wideman p. 739)
The variance between John and Robby s stories brings Wideman to the decision to write the selection
as both of the brothers recollections.
As Limerick tells the story of the old west, she explains, One skill essential to the writing of Western
American history is a capacity to deal with multiple points of view (Limerick p. 504). She explains
this through many stories, including the stories of Narcissa Whitman, the missionary sent to save the
Indian tribes, and Julia Bulette, a prostitute. Both were murdered. Narcissa by the Indian tribe she was
working with, and Julia by John Milleain of Virginia City. The Indians were looked upon as beasts,
and Milleain was praised by the respectable women of Virginia City. In perspective, and in Limericks
opinion, the Indians may not have been to blame, due to the fact that they were merely protecting
themselves from the diseases brought on by Narcissa that had already killed every infected tribe
member. Not to forget Julia Bulette s favored death just because her profession was not morally
accepted. These are the views referred to by Limerick that are often skipped over in stories

Downsizing Strategies and Its Effects
Introduction
Companies that faced a decrease in sales, market share, or profits in the 1980s and early 1990s began
to realize that their human resources were expensive and underutilized. To become more competitive,
companies made strategic decision to gradually lower their payroll numbers. (Anthony, Kacmar
Perrewe al, 2002:434) Downsizing has become a critical issue around the world. Downsizing and
mass lay offs are happening not only on US companies but also organizations in the entire industrial
world. The number of organizations and jobs affected by downsizing has been staggering. In 1993, in
an unending quest for lower costs, higher productivity, and fatter profits, American firms announced

negative impact on those who survive as employees in the organization, they can only serve to
highlight the presence of psychological and behavioural consequences for survivors. (Thornhill,
Saunders, 1998:273 4)
Why do firm downsize?
A diversity of reasons can be lead to the decision of downsize. Organization and employees are being
force to adapt to an environment characterized by augmented competition, government deregulation
and technological evolution. (Internet Material #7) (Refer to Appendix 1 for most common reasons of
restructuring) It can increase productivity, the value of the companies¡¯ shares and the profits by
reducing the number of employees per unit. Companies downsize to cut cost, improve efficiency and
to maintain a profit level acceptable to their shareholders. Other reasons include reorganization,
minimizing bureaucracy, eliminating excess, business downturns, mergers, and acquisitions.

Social Observation Of The Southlands Mall In Centennial
Social Observations I decided to go the Southlands Mall in Centennial, to observe people interactions.
I choose to head over to the mall around 11 am on Friday, September 15th. This was a great time for
me because my son was in school and I knew I needed at least two hours where I could just sit and
observe people without any distractions. When I was observing, I was looking for norms of behavior
and American values. To Begin, let me give you a visual of the mall. The Southlands mall is a large
outdoor mall that s filled with shops, diners and entertainment. I thought I would sit near Town Square
which is in the center of the mall. I could see majority of the store from here. There were a lot of
mothers out watching their children play in the water fountain and at the park. Norms are how values
tell us to behave (Conley, 2017, pg. 90). They are like rules or guideline to what kind of behavior is
acceptable. Norms can be informal or formal. Informal norms are unspoken for example, as I observed
my surroundings I saw children taking turns going down the slide. I also saw families standing in line
getting Pretzels. These are norms that are not written down but we learn them when we are young.
Informal norms are viewed as what is right verses what is rude. Formal norms are written down like
laws. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

women wearing Coach and Michael Kors bags. People were walking around on their IPhones, which
we all know these items are not cheap. I also saw tons of women leaving stores with lots

The Collapse Of The Ottoman Empire During World War One
Background Following the collapse of the Ottoman Empire during World War One, Britain and France
divided up the former Ottoman territories under the Sykes Picot Agreement in 1916, which established
French and British colonies, as well as asserted their respective spheres of influence in the region. The
borders drawn under this agreement, however, have caused crippling effects still felt today; the Syrian
territory was comprised of a Sunni majority, and Alawite (a Shi a sect), Druze and Kurdish minorities.
The present day Syrian Arab Republic emerged from this agreement, and formally gained
independence in 1945. The current Ba athist Regime came to power in 1963 following a coup d etat
led by an Alawite minority dominated military, overthrowing the Sunni majority, Western oriented,
capitalist Sunni majority. Prior to the coup, Alawites utilized the military as a means of social mobility
in an otherwise Sunni dominated state. Dissatisfaction with the effects of Sykes Picot, and the puppet
regimes of European imperialism that were in place, led to the Socialist Ba ath party s nationalist
platform. Once in power, the Ba ath party established state sponsored capitalism in an effort to take
control of the landed elite dominated agrarian portion of the economy. Interparty turmoil eventually
brought Hafez al Assad to power in 1970, who ruled until his death in 2000, when his son, Bashar al
Assad (the current president) took over.

It s so nice having a TV to watch whenever I want to; I really shouldn t complain (Dugard, 59). The revolution started in Britain and then continued to spread to the rest of the world. The revolution brought new revolutionary ideas that challenged earlier ones. It brought the answer to major emerging issues that affected a vast majority of people across the world. The Industrial Revolution was a revolution of celebration, for it created revolutionary inventions, new agricultural techniques, and social ideas that caused revolutionary change, especially in women s status. The Industrial Revolution brought inventions like the steam engine, cotton gin, power loom, and spinning jenny, mentioned in the Ways of the World textbook. These inventions contributed to a culture of innovation and also industrialized societies that had these inventions. In the second Industrial Revolution, it focused on chemicals, electricity, telegraph, and the telephone, mentioned in the Ways of the World textbook. The steam engine, invented in 1712, caused a massive change in transportation worldwide. One of the major products of the steam engine was the advancement of the railroad. • 4. The Road Ahead Will Be Long Marvin powell Us history 6th 12/10/2014 Martin Luther king JR In words of Barrack Obama, The road ahead will be long. Our climb will be steep. Obama provides a simple yet strong illustration of the hardships and obstacles faced when Striving for change. The statement made by Obama holds the same meaning when trying to Change communities that are like Irvington. Both Martin Luther King and Barrack Obama have a Superb comprehension of the extreme and diverse difficulties faced in African American Communities. For instance King stated, One hundred year later, the negro is still languishing in the corners of American society and finds himself an exile in his own land. This quote shines an Illuminating light on the problems seen in Irvington, because we have allowed other Communities to surpass us. While we quarrel and argue amongst each other, we do not see that we are lagging behind the rest of New Jersey and The United States. This township is in critical condition, because the sense of unity, dreams, and change has been lost. To revive our fair township of Irvington we must recover from the phlegmatic state which we are so accustomed to and take action, or like a house with a weak foundation the town will soon crumble to the ground. To begin improving the living standards of Irvington the community, we must come together, scrutinize the community, and solve our basic problems. Then, this township can advance. In the words ... • 5. Comparing Marlow of Heart of Darkness and Willard of... Comparing Marlow of Heart of Darkness and Willard of Apocalypse Now Whenever books are adapted for film, changes inevitably have to be made. The medium of film offers several advantages and disadvantages over the book: it is not as adept at exploring the inner workings of people it cannot explore their minds so easily; however, the added visual and audio capabilities of film open whole new areas of the imagination which, in the hands of a competent writer director, can more than compensate. Heart of Darkness relies heavily on lengthy philosophical and expository passages, as well as some very unusual and complex imagery; not the easiest material to rewrite as a screenplay (Canby, 18). However, rewrite it Francis Ford ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Therefore, Coppola elected to change the character, the only similarity between the two being that they are both normal people amongst lunatics, and are both outsiders Marlow never fits in with the corrupt and immoral Company, and Willard does not play by the usual army rules (both characters are uncannily similar to Kurtz in that respect). The similarities end there. Willard lacks the depth of thought that Marlow has; Willard does not digress into lengthy ethical debates, or philosophize. Also, he does not use imagery of any sort the strong, red eyed devils and the flabby, weak eyed devils from the book are not mentioned (if Willard were Marlow, he would have admonished the army leaders in Saigon for being flabby devils, for example), nor does he have any of the fascination with shoes and other arbitrary objects and ideas that Marlow seems to. Willard also has no qualms whatsoever about killing, whether it be innocents (the girl on the trading boat) or Kurtz himself; in the book, Marlow had an abhorrence towards killing. These are mostly unavoidable differences, due to the different settings. Marlow is an imaginative pilot who wishes to explore the Congo, having had a fascination with the many blank spaces on the earth from childhood; Willard is a soldier through and through and does not have time to moralize. Were these changes not present, then Apocalypse Now would have been horribly off balanced, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. The Goal, By Eliyahu M. The Goal, written by Eliyahu M. Goldratt, displays the life of a plant manager who is told that if he is not able to shift the manufacturing plant within a constrained time frame to make money, the factory will shut down. What s even more interesting about the novel is that it is based on the conflicts and advances of a mere manager in a small company located in a small town. By introducing and successfully implementing the Theory of Constraints , this manager was able to make this small company that was on the verge of shutting down to have one of the most productive plants thus making the factory more successful at the end. Alex Rogo, plant manager at UniCo, is told that he needs to bring the plant around in three months and make it profitable. Battling between his personal life problems (marriage) and problems at work, Alex just couldn t seem to make it work initially. He targets all of the wrong factors like employing the right people and assuring he has the latest technology. This is demonstrated clearly when Mr. Bill Peach, division vice president, discusses about a seven week overdue order that needed to be shipped out that very same day. The first foul is seen when Mr. Rogo handled the situation by forcing all the employees to work over time that night. Although that order got shipped out that night, it is not an efficient or stable method to take care of the problem. This is when Jonah, Alex s old physics professor, comes to the rescue. It is estimated that 60 percent of the worlds population lives within 60km of the coast and that each year more than 2 billion tons of carbon dioxide is absorbed into the ocean. Almost all of the problems with the ocean are man made. Ocean heath has deteriorated due to humans depleting fish supplies, polluting the ocean, and a general lack of knowledge about just how fragile the ocean is. Over the past several decades, humans have caused the health of our ocean to decline considerably. Along with climate change and ocean acidification, overfishing has destroyed many marine ecosystems. In the 1990 s, one of the worlds most abundant cod populations was quickly destroyed. The Newfoundland cod fishery had been one of the most productive cod fisheries in the world. Fishing for cod in Newfoundland had dated back to the 16th century, when the amount of fish seemed endless. The Canadians had traditionally fished sustainably for cod using small boats and traditional methods such as jigging or small inshore gill nets, but in the 1950 s and 1960 s other countries began to join in on the fishing, using larger boats and nets. England, U.S., The Soviet Union, Spain, Portugal and Germany all joined in on the action, increasing the annual catch from 250,000 tons to over 800,000 tons in 1968. From then on, the population slowly began to decline. With so many being caught each year, the fish were no longer able to reproduce as efficiently and renew their numbers to keep up with the demand. In addition to an increase in the commercial fishing fleets, new fishing technologies were created to help catch as many fish as possible. Larger nets that dragged along the bottom were created to catch every possible fish. These nets were killing young fish, other marine life, and the food source for the cod, which eventually led to the entire ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Design For The Contemporary Bedroom Sleek lines, minimalist design, and futuristic accents are the signature elements of contemporary style. From the flooring to the furnishings, here are seven design basics for the contemporary bedroom. Contemporary Bedroom Design Element 1) Wall Color In a contemporary bedroom, the style is so stark and simple that sometimes a bold wall color is needed to provide warmth and personality to the space. The size of the bedroom should determine how much color to use. If the room is small, choose a light neutral shade for three walls, and use the bolder darker color as an accent wall. If the room is larger, painting two adjoining walls a bright color, opposite two walls of a lighter shade, gives a funky contemporary feel to the room. Contemporary Bedroom Design Element 2) Flooring Hardwood and tiled flooring are popular choices for contemporary rooms, but for the bedroom, you may want to opt for a softer material. If you keep the hardwood or tiled flooring, a solid color throw rug is a versatile piece that can add a pop of color and soft landing place for your feet. If you decide to go with a carpet, keep the pile low. Knotted or berber carpet styles work best with the simple contemporary design. Stay away from patterned carpeting and long material such as shag or plush loop which will make the room look too busy. Contemporary Bedroom Design Element 3) The Bed For a contemporary bedroom the bed design should be as simple as possible. Beds with simple headboards and low or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The boys decided to mop the kitchen, which they probably didn t know how to do. We got to work, two girls opening boxes, two more opening cartons, and another girl and myself were emptying the cartons into the sink. It wasn t really that bad, only a faint smell of something bad, I thought we got the easy job. That is until we kept working. Unloading box after box the smell grew stronger. My body was shaking and I feared I might pass out from the awful smell, but I continued, I only had two more cartons. They were horrible. The bottoms were all green and flimsy, dripping milk all over the ground as I rushed them to the sink. The job was done, until I turned around and saw the mess we left. I hauled the giant trash bags over my shoulder and threw them up into the old dumpster in the back of the building. By the time I was coming back in all the girls in my group had finished their break and came back in to help, but I was all done. I mopped up the ground and the room lightened. Everyone seemed pretty happy that they didn t have to clean up, I was pretty happy that I did clean up, I did the best job. Our day was done and we were dismissed from our worksite. • 12. Benefits Of Going To College And Getting A Bachelor Degree All high schoolers face the same daunting problem. What they are going to do with their lives. A choice made as an 18 year old, determines future paths for the rest of their lives. Recently the subject of going to college and getting a four year degree has become very controversial. HIgh school students are choosing other alternatives, such as trade school, community college, or even not getting any further education at all. However even with many other options, going to college and getting a bachelor s degree is valuable for everyone. Going to college and getting a four year degree earns individuals more money. Those people make 98% more an hour than those without degrees. (Leonhardt 1) Over the course of a lifetime, a person with a bachelor s degree will make 1.1 million dollars opposed to average of 393,000 over a lifetime of someone without a bachelor s degree. (Hamm 4) The more money one makes, the more opportunities one is offered. Traveling the world, materialistic items, living location, providing for family, are all examples of opportunities requiring: money. College let s one attain these opportunities by giving degrees that will earn people higher paying jobs. A very big issue that people have with attending a four year college is the cost of college tuition. College is very expensive. Even after paying a large sum of money, the average amount of student loans is 30,000 dollars. (Bonder 1) The cost to get a bachelor s degree is 127,000 dollars. (Hamm 1) Even if ... The standard model had been pretty well tied up , with its group of 16 elementary particles and their nice set of rules describing how they should interact. Physicists had observed until the Higgs discovery, 16 of these particles. The crowd was already beginning to desperate for a 17th particle that would send the model in new and wild directions (supposedly). But the Higgs particle ruined the hopes and expectations of everybody: it turned out to be very ordinary: its behavior was just like the model said it would act, obeying every theorized rule [2]. Therefore, the Standard Model is vindicated. And this was a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The weak force, on the other hand, is associated with particles called W and Z bosons, very massive comparing to the other particles. The Higgs mechanism is thought to be responsible for this, now that the existence of the particle is a fact: if we recognize the existence of the Higgs field, the W and Z bosons mix with this field, acquiring mass, explaining the reason of why the W and Z bosons have mass. This unifies as well the electromagnetic and weak forces into the electroweak force. [4] An interesting side effect, much less important than the discoveries, indeed, but with enough importance for itself, is the validation of the large amounts of effort and money invested in the equipment like the LHC. This flattens the road for the investment in the next generation of scientific machinery to keep researching. After analyzing the facts, this money is going to be very needed in the near future. It has been theorized that dark energy is the bulk of the energy of the universe, and the dark matter and energy existence is neither explained by the Standard Model. This model can´t explain gravity or the neutrino mass. Nowadays, scientific community knows that the Standard Model is an approximation of another theory, more comprehensive and able to explain the Higgs mass with a most natural approach. Consequently these costs are forcing many Americans to file bankruptcy due to the massive amount of medical debt that they owe, slowing our economy and reducing reimbursements for medical facilities (Khazan) The debate on how to fix health care continues, even after the Affordable Care Act was passed in 2010 to help begin our national journey to fix health care in America. Many believe that healthcare in Canada is free when in fact if you look at it from a policy framework view it is not. The healthcare system in Canada is financed by government enforced tax rates that vary in costs depending on family size. income, and province location (Canadian Health Care). While the federal government creates standards for health care, provincial governments make decisions in regards to where hospitals should be located, how many physicians each location should have, and the services that they will provide (Canadian Health Care). Ultimately, if the United States moves to a single payer system, taxes will increase to pay for the program. The question that often is asked when discussing a single payer system is how much will my taxes increase and it this cost more than I am currently paying. This is most often where the debate begins. In 2013 the average tax dedicated to the healthcare program for a family of 4 in Canada was $11,320 (Esmail). For a family of three with two parents, the cost was approximately $10,989 (Esmail). This tax pays for all medical care and does not require additional payments for co pays, deductibles, or out of pocket expenses (Canadian Health Care). For a family of 4 in America the cost of health care averages $22,030 with an employer paying $12,886 of that total cost and the remaining $9,144 being paid for by the employee (Esmail). The readers are reminded that the massive vessel was considered unsinkable and disaster proof prior to its first trip at sea. After crashing into a large iceberg, a few of the hull s compartments were destroyed and the ship quickly began to take on water. • 18. General Aggression Model Of Human Aggression Part 1. Violence Mechanism of GAM General Aggression Model (GAM) represents a theoretical basis for social cognitive integrated model of human aggression, and aims at the interpretation of the connection between the motivation of aggression, and the following aggressive behavior, aggressive effect (i.e., physiological stimulation), aggressive cognition, (i.e., thoughts), reduced pro social behavior, and reduced empathy (i.e., emotional facets) (Anderson and Bushman, 2001; Barlett and Anderson 2013). As a process model, GAM can be divided into two explanatory mechanisms; a) proximate and distal GAM (Anderson Carnagey, 2004) or b) proximate GAM as single episode GAM and multiple episode GAM (see. Anderson Bushman, 2001) as (long term) effects of repetitive violence viewing (Barlett Anderson, 2013). In the single episode model, GAM describes a continuous cycle of interaction between personal/biological and situational/violent media exposure variables/modifiers; situational input variables influence aggressive behavior through their impact on the person s present internal state (e.g. personality/hostility traits, emotions or attitudes), represented by cognitive, affective and arousal variables. The present internal state of a person in GAM is the result of the interaction among between affect, arousal, and cognition (i.e., the activation/priming of one of them leads to the activation of other two) (Anderson and Dill, 2001). Scout resides with her family in Maycomb County, Alabama in the 1930s a town severely divided by color. Another hypocritical scene occurs in the novel when the people of Maycomb make untrue judgements about the Radley Place and its inhabitants. For instance, Scout states, The shutters and doors of the Radley house were closed on Sundays, another thing alien to Maycomb s ways: closed doors meant illness and cold weather only (11). It is duplicitous of the townspeople to scrutinize the Radleys based solely on town gossip and the appearance of their home. The Radley home is intentionally used as an excuse by the townspeople to isolate the Radleys since their way of living is not considered normal in their eyes. Overall, numerous reasons can be found why people tend to be hypocritical; it is evident as to why many possess this quality in Maycomb. Lee uses characterization, a crucial literary device, to display to readers the lethal effects of hypocrisy in society. As Miss Maudie said, Mockingbirds don t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don t eat up people s gardens, don t nest in corncribs, they don t do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That s why it s a sin to kill a mockingbird (119). The Collapse Of The Ottoman Empire During World War One Background Following the collapse of the Ottoman Empire during World War One, Britain and France divided up the former Ottoman territories under the Sykes Picot Agreement in 1916, which established French and British colonies, as well as asserted their respective spheres of influence in the region. The borders drawn under this agreement, however, have caused crippling effects still felt today; the Syrian territory was comprised of a Sunni majority, and Alawite (a Shi a sect), Druze and Kurdish minorities.
