Prison life can be harsh, and time spent in a isolation is even worse. A majority of those in prison
spend countless hours in idleness. It would be much better if they used that time to reeducate
themselves for a productive life on the outside. Some of the prisoners have serious emotional and

Abstract
The aim of this paper is to analyse three short abridgments about education and child rearing in the
19th century. In the course of the essay it is to be examined who the writers were and how the texts
were written and published.

In this homework I will be looking at three short abridgments by one male and two female writers and
analyze their outlook on education and childrearing in their very own time and gender based on their
own backgrounds. In the end I will introduce a contemporary author who wrote his book from a
different perspective and is today considered a classic.
2. Heman Humphrey
Heman Humphrey was born on 26 March 1779 in Connecticut and died on 3 April 1861 in
Massachusettes. He was married to Sophia Porter and worked as a member of the clergy, as well as a
writer and functioned as the second president of Amherst College (1823 1845), which was founded in
1821 as a teaching institution for missionaries that would one day be based all around the globe. H.
Humphrey was elected to the presidency in July 1823 after his 10 years of ministry in Fairfield, CT
and six years of being the pastor of the church in Pittsfield, MA. His work had had great effect on
people and he was already seen as a pioneer and leader in the temperance movement alongside
Nathaniel Hewit, members of the First Church. In the approach of the Revolutionary War the economy

changed dramatically and this was accompanied by increasing poverty, which drove more and more

Utnapishtim was granted immortality for the simple fact that Enlil hated him and wanted to punish
him with eternal life. Utnapishtim was told by Ea that the flood was coming, and he knew that would
be the end of mankind. Utnapishtim said to Ea Your command, my lord, exactly as you said it, I shall
faithfully execute. (pg73 line 33) Ultimately he developed a plan to save himself and the people. His
plan was to construct a huge boat and when the floods came the people would be on the boat and not
be killed. Utnapishtim knew he had to have a plan in order for the construction of the boat to be
completed. He was very smart with his plan and knew how to bring the people together and for the
boat to be finished in time. In order for his plan to work he had to come up with a story to tell his
people. He had to have a believable story so they would follow him and not think he was crazy. He
asked Ea for advice on this matter, and asked what he should tell the people. He was told to tell the
people that Enlil is angry with him and that he must find a new place to live. The story works and the
people stand blindly behind him. For seven days straight Utnapishtim sacrificed a lamb or a bull in a
celebratory manner and the people feasted until the bellies were full. There was also plenty of beer and
wine to keep the people happy. After the 7 days the boat was complete. Enlil wanted to destroy

What Is An Example Of Cognitive Dissonance Theory
Cognitive Dissonance Theory, or CDT for short, is an objective communication theory that was
developed by Leon Festinger. Cognitive Dissonance is defined as The distressing mental state caused
by inconsistency between a person s two beliefs or a belief and an action. (Griffin, Ledbetter, et al).
An example of cognitive dissonance would be a health conscious smoker, this person knows that
smoking is bad for them, but they still smoke because they enjoy it. Their desire to be healthy
conflicts with their smoking, this conflict places them in a distressing mental state, a state of cognitive
dissonance. Festinger provides three hypotheses for CDT: 1.) Selective exposure prevents dissonance.
2.) Post decision dissonance creates need for reassurance. and 3.) Minimal justification for action
induces attitude change.

of books over and over. No variety, no choice, only repetition. Although America prides itself on

It has become increasingly difficult for new ideas to come out in print for this reason. Rifka

Personality is an important part of one character. The first theorist of choice that can explain Antwone
Fisher. Bandura believed that learning was apparent when one was observing another person or
experience (Schultz Schultz, 2013). Through Antwone s actions, it was plausible that he became a
product of what he witnessed and experienced. Antwone displayed certain fears that was based on his
past and the people that he came in contact with. Bandura would say that Antwone went through the

How Does Liesel Use Language In The Book Thief
In the novel The Book Thief, written by Markus Zusak, there is a strong presence surrounding words.
I was amazed by this presence through Liesel s relationship to books, the power of words, and
language that is affected by the Holocaust. I was amazed by how Liesel overcomes Hitler s
suppression and teaches others about language and words. The presence of words is shown through
Liesel s relationship to books. We see Liesel develop throughout the novel from a powerless girl to a
more mature, empowered girl, this is, in part, due to her relationship with books. Liesel s first
