- DECnet is a proprietary suite of networking protocols developed by Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) in the 1970s. The earliest versions of DECnet allowed communication between directly connected minicomputers.
- DECnet has evolved through several phases, each expanding its capabilities. Current major versions are DECnet Phase IV and DECnet/OSI. DECnet Phase IV supports both proprietary DEC protocols as well as some standard protocols, while remaining backwards compatible. DECnet/OSI adds support for Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) protocols.
- DECnet uses area and node addressing and can support tens of thousands of nodes. It implements routing, transport, and upper layer protocols to allow communication between nodes on a network.
