Taking a Look at Operation Anaconda
Operation Anaconda was the largest battle fought in Afghanistan by conventional forces. It took
place after US Special Forces aligned with Afghan forces from the Northern alliance ran bombing
campaigns that crushed the Taliban in late 2001. The operation would take place in the Shahikot
valley which had peaks that were anywhere around 8,000 to 12,000 feet. The high altitude, rocky
terrain and the cold weather prove difficult for air assault missions in the area of operations (AO)
and for conventional forces that were not trained for combat operations at such high altitudes and
cold weather.
In mid–January the US Intelligence community noticed the massing of a sizeable Al–Qaeda force
moving towards the Shahikot valley in Southeastern Afghanistan. Planning began for an operation to
strike at the Al Qaeda troops before they could become a hindrance for future operations, the local
populace as well block rat routs out of Afghanistan. But the tribes in this part of Afghanistan were
considerably less friendly to America than the Northern Alliance. The reason for bringing in
Conventional forces for Operation Anaconda, in which previous operations were mainly Special
Operation led was the unreliable Afghan fighters. The lack of confidence in the Afghan fighters in
that part of the country was partly to blame for the failure to trap the Al Qaeda forces in Tora Bora
and expectedly through inexperience and neglect let Osama Bin Laden (UBL) possibly escape in a
rat route into

The Attack On The World Trade Center
The war in Afghanistan is well known for all the destruction it's caused in the Middle East. Two
things well known for the destruction is the attacks on the world trade center, and catching Osama
Bin Laden. It all started September 11th, 2001 when Afghanistan attacked America. These attacks
are by far the worst terrorist attack on American soil. These attacks will never be forgotten. The first
attacks on the world trade center were not the 9/11 attacks. In fact, the first attack was on February
26th, 1993. When a few terrorists put large explosives under the world trade center. The terrorists
were attempting to bring down the world trade center but it didn't. There were six deaths and over
1,000 injured. They had traced the van to a few people who attended a mosque in Brooklyn. Later
the leader of the attacks, Ramzi Yousef, sent a message to the New York Time saying that the attack
was retaliation for Americans support of Israel, then fled to Pakistan. Ramzi Yousef appeared again
in the Philippians and had an apartment that he was making explosives in. He made a bomb that he
took onto an airplane. He placed it in the airplane and had a timer on it and it exploded. The
explosive killed one person and injured ten. Afterward Ramzi decided he wanted to make more
attacks on the U.S. He later was making more explosives in his apartment with a friend. An accident
happened while mixing chemicals and a fire started. Ramzi managed to escape somewhere in the
Philippians, but

Operation Argo And The Killing Of Osama Bin Ladin Essay
Introduction: The Central Intelligence Agency, hereafter referred to as the CIA, is one of the most
well–known and fascinating intelligence agencies throughout the world. For the most part, when the
CIA comes up in the news, it is to report that the agency failed in doing something. This paper will
analyze different successes and failures of well–known operations of the CIA. The successes that
will be analyzed are Operation Argo and the killing of Osama Bin Ladin. Operation Argo has
recently become well known due to a movie being released about the operation. The killing of
Osama Bin Ladin is probably the most popular case that the CIA had completed due to its
significance in a time when the United States was quite vulnerable. This paper will review these two
successes of the agency and analyze how these missions were successful and why. The two failures
that will be discussed are the attacks on September 11, 2001 and the Bay of Pigs Invasion. The
attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001 are crucial to the American people and to the
Intelligence Community. It is important to analyze these attacks in order to figure out what, if
anything, could have been done differently that may have prevented these attacks from occurring.
The Bay of Pigs Invasion is an infamous failure of the United States as well as the CIA in which
many mistakes were made. The CIA plays an essential role in the safety of the United States and its
people. Due to its high importance, it is crucial to

Who Is The Leader Of The Indian National Congress?
At first glance, these two historical figures could not seem more distant. Mohandas Gandhi
campaigned a universal and tolerant version of religion and upheld these beliefs through his political
movement. In contrast, Osama bin Laden has been credited for creating an antagonistic and
combative interpretation of traditional Islam that led to some of the most gruesome acts of terror
observed in the twenty first century. Although both of their ideals stand on opposite ends of the
spectrum, they both achieved an influential status as religious and political leaders. Both can be
credited for provoking thousands of people to act on their behalf. Although their ideologies were
vastly different, these two men can both be regarded as religious extremists who made strides within
their own political agendas. Gandhi once stated, "Those who say religion has nothing to do with
politics do not know what religion is" ("Preface"). Both men used religion to convey a heavy and
distinct political argument, although their practices are poles apart. Gandhi joined the leadership of
the Indian National Congress; the political body that advocated India's independence from Great
Britain ("Mohandas"). By doing so, he was able to gain a platform big enough to consciously and
efficiently spread his religious demonstrations of non–violence. Gandhi endorsed the principle of
ahimsa to the practice of his resistance campaigns. He did not advocate the term passive resistance,
but instead labeled

The Us Led Afghan War Ignited After The 9 / 11 Attacks On...
The US led Afghan war ignited soon after the 9/11 attacks on America, killing approximately 3000
US citizens in New York City at the time of George W Bush's presidency. The tragic attack was
brutally carried out by a prominent Al–Qaida Leader Osama Bin Laden, who had just fled his
hometown in Saudi Arabia and was living in Afghanistan's rugged mountains of Tora Bora. The
Taliban Government heavily dominated Afghanistan at the time Osama Bin Laden carried out
attacks on US soil, and he claimed responsibility for the attack subsequently. As a result, US
requested the then Taliban leaders Mullah Omar to hand over Osama to the US authorities since he
was responsible for the ferocious inhumane attacks on the US soil, killing thousands and damaging
millions of dollar worth of property for revenge and retaliation purposes. The then Taliban leader
rejected the US's offer and denied giving up Osama to the US authorities considering him a special
guest, and giving up guest was significantly against cultural code and values for the Taliban,
especially for Mullah Omar – the leader. Therefore, George W Bush declared war on Afghanistan,
sending thousands of troops and attacking the country. However, taking revenge, retaliation from
Osama, and even demolishing Taliban's terroristic domination over Afghanistan was a reasonable
excuse for the US to take immediate action, but sending thousands of US soldiers who some didn't
make it back home, spending billions of US dollars, which also caused

Analysis Of Serge Schumann 's ' 9 / 11 '
September 11th, 2001 is a date that will be forever remembered by many. It was one of the most
terrifying and horrendous days ever experienced in the United States. Just this one event impacted
every American, as well as effected others all over the world in some type of traumatic way. Best
known as, 9/11. It marked a time that changed society forever instantly. During the morning of 9/11,
everyone thought it would just be a normal day, however, four airliners were hijacked and planes
were under attack by terrorists. One plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania, another in Pentagon,
and the last two planes hit the Twin Towers of New York City. In that moment more than two
thousand lives were quickly taken, leaving families and friends devastated. This horrible incident
touched so many lives around the world. New York times published the most popular article about
9/11. Serge Schumann the author of this well known piece, interrupted the tragic crisis through
ethos, logos, and mainly pathos. Ethos can be demonstrated by the credibility of the writer. In this
case the author Serge Schuman, repeatedly and successfully proves his reliability in many ways
throughout his 9/11 exposition. Ethos is first introduced in this article by gaining the readers trust.
This is accomplished by explaining the information of this catastrophe in great detail, along with
sharing statistics to back up the given information. He uses specific details such as giving flight

Why I Join The Army Or The Navy
Most things in life come down to choices we have to make to progress or to better ourselves. Some
people choose a career in clinics or run their own business or they join the army or the navy. But
then it comes down to which one to choose from. If you were to join one of the two, would you join
the Army or the Navy? People take into consideration of which would suit them better. Some choose
which one is better just by the advertisements, or because a family member was in a military or navy
branch of their own. Even a discussion with a recruiter could change your mind on which of the two
you're interested in joining. There's plenty to take into consideration when it comes down to
pursuing something in that type of field. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Naval warfare includes ships, submarines, communications, combat training and aviation. The
use ships to transport aircrafts across waters with access to landing strips among their ships for
airborne aircrafts to land. When it comes to the different jobs in the navy they have Healthcare,
aviation, engineering and special warfare. Healthcare consists on taking care of people who are
injured or sick among their ranks as well as being dentists, physical therapists, and other healthcare
jobs. Then there's the duties of the aviation crew which refer to either the flight support team who
are the ones that maintains the aircraft and its conditions and keep track of its functions making sure
it's working properly, flight operations who controls and maintains the flight deck for the aircraft
carriers, or the naval aviators who search underwater from threats above through submarine
communications. The jobs of Special Warfare/Special Operations deal with being a navy seal, navy
diver, aviation rescue diver, special warfare combatant–craft crewman, or an explosive ordinance
disposal technician. There's plenty of possibilities inside of being a marine in the navy. It'll have its
ups and downs but it could offer plenty of opportunities that appeal to an individual as yourself in
numerous ways. The Army is a branch from the military that is based on land unlike the marines
which is based on the waters. Their responsibilities are to

The Attack Of Al Qaeda Osama Bin Laden
September 11, 2001 evil struck the United States of America in the form of ruthless terrorism.
Terrorism that was sent from a terrorist group called Al–Qaeda, and leader of Al–Qaeda Osama Bin

liners and deliberately crashed them in buildings around the east coast. Two planes crashed into both
the south and north towers of the world center. Soon after, both towers collapsed to the ground

On September 11, 2001 Osama Bin Laden did successfully accomplished his mission on attacking
the United States and killing thousands. The major mistake Osama Bin Laden made that day was not
only attacking the most powerful country in the world, but his major mistake was to continue to
keep breathing to continue to live on this earth because now his clock was ticking, ticking down his
last worthless days on earth. A man that thought he could actually get away with murdering
thousands of people. A man that on May 2, 2011 clock would stop ticking, a man that would be
killed by United States Navy Seals, and the decision to give the go ahead to kill Osama Bin Laden
that decision came from none other than the most powerful man in the world the president of the
United States of America Barak Obama. President Obama entered office in January 2009 with a full
plate of hard choice to make in order to get the United States stronger, better, and most importantly
safer. Knowing that Osama Bin Laden was still a free man in the world made the fear of many
especially in American great. President Obama knew it was his duty while in office to hunt down
and capture or kill Bin Laden for not only the crimes that Bin Laden had committed against
American, but as well as crimes

The Allegory Of George Saunders's 'The Red Bow'
George Saunders' "The Red Bow" is an allegory of America's 2003 invasion of Iraq. The invasion
was ordered not long after the terrorist attacks in the United States orchestrated by the Afghanistan
based al–Qaeda leader, Osama Bin Laden. The attacks resulted in a panic led by American
authorities to find and destroy any person or group that could be a threat to American freedom.
Since the attacks in 2001, the United States military has led attacks in Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia,
Yemen, Pakistan, Libya, and Syria. Today, we are beginning to see the long–term effects of the war
in Iraq as ISIL fighters try to reintegrate into society and are faced with a moral panic. In "The Red
Bow", Uncle Matt symbolizes the source of irrational fears similar to that which one witnesses
today.
Uncle Matt, stokes the flames of hysteria regarding the danger dogs pose to humans. Dr. Bonn, a
professor of sociology and criminology, calls this type of hysteria "moral panic", he describes it in
his paper; "Moral panic is a public and political response to an exaggeration or distortion of the
threat posed to society by some allegedly harmful individual or group" (2). What began as an effort
to prevent more attacks on innocent children, quickly escalated to a witch hunt. The first act was to
kill the dog that likely killed his niece. Next, Uncle Matt ordered the culling of neighbors' dogs and
dogs that had been seen with dogs that were suspected in the killing of the niece. He ramped up the

Operation Anaconda Analysis
Battle Analysis of Operation Anaconda
Operation Anaconda was a key decisive battle that took place in Afghanistan during the early parts
of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF). It was also one of the military's biggest Air Assault
Missions to ever be conducted. During this battle there were many moving pieces as well as
personnel that shaped the conflict which ultimately lead to the capture of key terrain during the
operation some of which were Joint Special Operations Command, 5th Special Forces Group
(Airborne), Central Intelligence Agency's (CIA) Special Activities Division (SAD),160th (SOAR)
Special Operations Aviation Regiment, 1st Battalion of the 75th Ranger Regiment, and many other
units throughout the U.S. Military as well as Coalition forces. With this there also many elements of

Forces in the valley had priority of air assets should they take contact however. There were coalition
forces that were required to directly secure the peak of the mountain who weren't priority should
they come into contact, which they did, with possible enemies. Having so many forces moving in
one area, there weren't enough people to properly control who had priority for what and how to give
any of them the proper reinforcements/ resupply should they need them. With the air assets that the
coalition forces did have there wasn't de–confliction as to who had priority over them and where
exactly they would operate. From this operation command and control became much more
important on the battlefield, it also created a better understanding of the battlespace in which units
operate in. Although lives were lost and many lessons were learned Operation Anaconda was a
success. The peak of Takur Ghar was secured and gave coalition forces the key terrain they needed
in order more effectively control the area in which units would later operate

Where were You on 9/11?
Here is a question I ask people from time to time to people after I have a feel for the person, "Where
were you on the morning of September 11th, 2001 at 8:46am? Well for me I was just finishing a
3.1–mile run (5K) at Naval Amphibious Base Coronado. For all you none military types of people
who have never visited one of America's amazing cities it is home to the US Navy's West Coast
Special Operations community. And let it be known I was not a Navy SEAL, SWCC (Special
Warfare Combatant Craftsmen) Operator or an EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) technician. I
worked SEAL Team 5 as part of the support staff. Granted when the Platoon I was assigned to
deployed, I was wheels up with the team. As I got back into the locker room at my command I
remember looking up at the television and seeing that a plane had just hit the North Tower of the
World Trade Center. Now from time to time I would remember hearing about a little single engine
plane flying off its course and getting close into Manhattan; so at that moment that is what was
going through my head at that exact moment. Well after I got out of the shower at 9:06am I heard
that another airplane hit the South Tower. Now being from New Jersey and knowing the travel
restrictions that surround New York City; at that exact moment I started to come to the realization
that our Nation may be under attack. Well just as I was finished getting dressed and heading to

Case Study Operation Anaconda
Operation Anaconda Case Study When it comes to succeeding at anything, it is important to plan,
prepare, and rehears the outcome. In a combat zone, this becomes even more important because
lives and the success of the mission depend on it. This was not the case however, during a fight
called Operation Anaconda. The purpose of this paper is to point out what went wrong with the lack
of planning, coordination, rehearsal, and preparation between Air and ground communications, and
how it proved to be critical during Operation Anaconda. The ending results were a delayed
execution and several friendly casualties. In February 2002, Special Forces intelligence agents along
with Advanced Force Operations (AFO), and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), were starting
to make a connection between an increase presence of high–value targets (HVT), the Taliban, and
Al–Qaeda fighters in an area called Shahi–Kot Valley (Neville, 2005). Shahi–Kot is located in
Afghanistan, just southeast of a town called Zormat. A plan was devised to eliminate the enemy
threat in that area. Major Franklin L. Hagenbeck was to command the mission called Operation
Anaconda. This operation was the first large–scale battle in the United States War in Afghanistan
since the Battle of Tora Bora (Call, 2007, p. 57–86). Operation Anaconda was also unique in the fact
that it would involve a great number of Afghan militia, U.S. and coalition Special Operations, and
conventional forces (U.S. Army, n.d.),

Using their cover in the western world, as not to draw suspicion they were able to use a suitable
cover to come and go throughout the US as well as back to Europe and the Middle East, and in most
instances until the 9/11 attacks occurred even the name Al–Qaeda or Osama Bin Laden wasn't
commonly known. With their blocking the information that the US could learn their intentions they
enabled themselves to have the freedom to move and conduct the operations needed to conduct the
9/11 attacks. Their deception operations with their uses of cover stories that seem not only benign
but also provided the cover needed to move back and forth, one of these aspects through the use of
deception, were able to make the US unsuspicious of their actions presented through false
information.
This information was not just a learned concept from Al–Qaeda prior to the 9/11 attack but prior to
9/11 with other attacks as well. One of these areas of instruction was how to infiltrate into enemy
territory as well as how to blend into the western world not to arouse suspicion. These lessons also
included how to make the cover story more believable and meeting clandestinely. Many of these
tactics are similar in the approach that many international criminal organizations and even nations
conduct deception and denial operations. Before the invasion by the US in 2001, many of these
strategies and concepts were taught throughout the training camps in Afghanistan and recently

Epic Hero In Beowulf
"He would sleep in the fire, soon. His soul, left his flesh, flew to glory." This very quote from the
epic Beowulf, sets the tone and very intense qualities of older epics. This specific epic, focuses on
the hero and Beowulf, who is the only warrior capable of defeating the vicious villainous creature
Grendel, and his mother. Beowulf shares the qualities of many other epic heroes such as showing the
nature of being almost superhuman, being the deciding factor in the wellbeing of his people, and
showing uncontested bravery no matter the obstacle they must face. In more modern times, the
United States Delta Force can be considered an epic heroes based on the sheer values and courage
held by its members.
The United States 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment–Delta, or Delta Force for short, is
considered one of, if not the best, elite Special Forces units in the world. Its highly classified
missions, state of the art combat equipment, members from the highest echelon special operations
teams in the United States, and agonizing training regime, etcetera, has put this unit on the top.
Beowulf was considered the strongest man or warrior in his time, trekking through the unknowns,
journey's that felt like they would never end, battles that seemed to last forever. It is assumed
Beowulf can even be considered near superhuman. The same can be said for Delta operators whose
training, selection, and missions are near impossible for the average person. The operators must

The Man Behind The 9 / 11 Attacks Essay
The man behind the 9/11 Attacks who did not receive the same degree of attention of Osama bin
Laden or his organization Al Qaeda is Khalid Sheik Mohamed. This man is known as the
mastermind to some people. The paper's objective is to compile and construct a detailed outline of
Khalid's life and draw a conclusion on motives for his attacking of the United States. This will help
create a profile of behaviors and choices that will allow Counter–Terror to have information to look
for in suspects. Thus, allowing the apprehension of new terrorists. The information that caused this
paper to come into existence was reading the 9/11 Report A Graphic Adaptation, specifically in
Chapter 5, Al Qaeda Aims at the American Homeland. The Original reaction stood out to me for the
research paper when I learned about the planning that Khalid Sheik Mohamed did and his work with
his nephew in the 1993 with the World Trade Center Bombing. Since Khalid Mohamed was a key
player in the first mass attack on the United States from a foreign group since Pearl Harbor, I
Believe we must understand all of Khalid's interests so we can protect ourselves from others with
the same ideals. This paper is organized from early life and schooling to planning of the 1993 World
Trade Center attack, then to the 9/11 attacks planning and execution, and lastly closing with the
location and on Khalid Sheik Mohamed's current location. Khalid Sheik Mohamed was born march

Al Qaed A Global Threat
Al Qaeda– Global Threat
Ricky Langlois
Florida Atlantic University
Abstract
Al Qaeda is a global organization founded by Osama Bin Laden. It is one of the most powerful and
rich terrorist organizations in the world. The group is responsible for major attacks such as
September 11th and many other bombings. Through the years Al Qaeda has transformed from a
terrorist organization into a fighting group. It is now something known as jihadist networks. These
networks of Al Qaeda are so powerful and can be seen as a global threat because of their worldwide
supporters, financial means and their access to weapons.

Osama Bin Laden was one of the then most wanted fugitives and terrorists for his involvement in
the U.S. embassy bombings. Even though the leader, Osama Bin Laden, was killed in 2011, the
terrorist network still exists. Two days after his death, a new leader was elected. Osama Bin Laden
was not the only one to be killed though, an FBI agent shot the leader of Al Qaeda in the Arabian
Peninsula and the leader of the Al Qaeda in East Africa was shot by a Policeman. Despite these
killings, the Al Qaeda network is powerful and is still growing in the amount of their supporters.
Al Qaeda is a global threat because of their worldwide supporters, financial means and their access
to weapons. In 2001, the groups were only active in Afghanistan and Pakistan and had little support
from other areas. Now, the network has spread across five different continents, with seven different
groups. They have a group in the Islamic Maghreb, Afghanistan, Europe, Oceana, Pakistan, East
Africa, and the Arabian Peninsula. They have a great advantage by having all these different groups
in different places because now they are so easily able to conduct an attack anywhere around the
world. Each specific group has different targets. The Al Qaeda in East Africa (AQEA) is focused on
bombing US embassies in Africa while the Al Qaeda in Iraq (AQI) is focused on bombing US
Warships and Tanks in the Middle East. Al Qaeda has grown in the number of supporters. As John

Specializations of The U.S. Special Operations Teams
The U.S. Special Operations Teams are some of the toughest men in the entire world and are trained
to endure the most extreme conditions in order to be properly prepared to serve and defend our
country, The United States of America. There are three different branches of protection in The
United States: the Navy, the Army, and the Air Force. Accordingly, each of these has its own tribute
to the Special Operations Forces. The Navy contributes the Navy SEALs, the Air Force provides Air
Force SOCOM, and the Army provides the Green Berets, Delta Force, and the Rangers. Each of
these sectors is very selective and secretive. The SEALs are likely the most highly trained forces out
of all of the Special Operations Units. SEAL stands for Sea, Air, and Land team. The SEALs must
know how to do many different things. The SEALs are commandos, which is a soldier who is in the
United States Special Operations who specializes in water landings, parachuting, and repelling down
mountains. These commandos must also know how to take down enemies while in various places
including underwater, in speedboats, helicopters, while parachuting, or by land espionage (Stanley).
Their job is complicated because they must know how to do what the Air Force Units do such as
parachuting, how to deal with explosives and hands on combat similar to that of the Army Units,
along with the "Navy" part of the job which encompasses underwater missions and training. When

Pros And Cons Of Drone Attacks
On February 4, 2002, for the first time, an unmanned predator drone was used in an air strike near
the city of Khost in the Paktia province of Afghanistan. Three men were killed in the strike, although
the target of the mission, Osama Bin Laden, turned out to not be there. There has been much debate
as to whether the benefits of drone warfare outweigh the risks, however there are more pros then
cons to drone warfare (Powers).
The use of drone strikes has increased over the years. Only 50 strikes were approved by the Bush
administration, whereas the Obama administration approved 506 strikes (Powers). Drone strikes
haven proven to be very useful. They helped to bring down a huge terrorist threat to the United
States. According to Michael V. Hayden, a retired Air–Force four–star general and author of Playing
to the Edge: American Intelligence in the Age of Terror, drone strikes "disrupted terrorist plots and
reduced the original Qaeda organization along the Afghanistan–Pakistan border to a shell of its
former self.". Drone strikes were crucial in stopping Osama Bin Laden. The strikes worried the
leadership of Al Qaeda, and they wanted to stop operations and go into hiding. Drone strikes have
succeeded in causing fear throughout Al Qaeda and taking out many members of the organization,
making any losses well worth it (Hayden).
One major downfall in using drones in warfare is the loss of civilian lives, but the military takes
many steps to prevent this. It is debated as to

Terrorism Tactics
Warfare has been an ever–evolving aspect of human nature. Throughout human history, man has
always invented new ways to annihilate one another. With recent advances in terrorism,
counterterrorism has developed a new type of counter. After September 11, 2001 under President
Bush the Central Intelligence Agency would be the first into Afghanistan, thus compiling names to a
secret list of high–value target and could be killed without presidential approval (Shaw and Akhter,
2014, P11). This would begin a new strategy of gathering names of terrorist leaders would be the
start of a new counterterrorism tactic that the United States would adopt and continues to use today.

There is a lot of debate on the current use of drones in counterterrorism saying that they should not
be used to kill because the drone pilot no longer experience's war and the killing becomes casual
(Holmqvist, 2013, P541). Thus, making the act of killing less emotional leaving the operator distant
from the killing causing the pilot to feel numb towards killing. The other side says that these
operators get to see the effects of an attack up close due to the state of art camera images that allow
the operator to witness the chaos from an attack up close in excessive detail. Seeing death in this
type of detail has caused drone operators to develop Post–Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) that
effect ground troop in the same manner after intense combat operations. Right now, each side is
being studied and the finds are still rudimentary. Other debated topics include: success rate, civilian
casualties, legality, cost and the lack of human boots on the ground. Drones have provided an
answer to the new high tempo of asymmetrical warfare producing success in disabling terrorist
networks around the globe without the need for a large foot print that cost the United States billions
of dollars and a huge occupational army. Therefore, decreasing cost and

Taraki 's extreme Khalq group and the Parcham marked a clearance of companionship with the
Soviet Union. Taraki 's endeavors to enhance common instruction and redistribute land had caused a
revolt by mujahideen rebels. Taraki was removed by Khalq equal Hafizullah Amin in September.
Amin was viewed as a "cruel sociopath" by remote eyewitnessess, and associated Amin with being a
specialist of the U.S. Focal Intelligence Agency (CIA), in spite of the fact that that was not the
situation. By December, Amin 's legislature had lost control of a significant part of the nation,

America 's Foreign Policies And Outlook On National...
September 11, 2001 marks the day of a horrific event that had changed America's foreign policies
and outlook on national security protocol. The response that the U.S. government had towards this
act of terror was a response involving the pursuit of justice against those who committed the heinous
actions that killed thousands of innocent Americans. The U.S. government wanted to combat our
enemies by pursuing national interests in an attempt to stop the occurrences of terrorism that were
occurring from the Middle East region. The government would do this by first demanding the
surrender of Al–Qaeda leaders including Osama Bin Laden and those that were involved with the
planning of the attack. Ground forces were later sent to search for Al–Qaeda members when they
did not comply with the demands. The U.S. government had goals of developing a peaceful relation
with Middle Eastern governments to help combat Al–Qaeda forces; but, while the U.S. government
had intentions of containing a global threat of terrorism, I believe that U.S. government actions have
unintentionally unleashed a terrorism outbreak within the Middle East. With intention to stop
terrorist acts from taking place, the interests of the U.S. have undoubtedly caused anger among the
people of Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran and may have caused terrorist organizations to benefit from actions
made by the mistakes of our U.S. military.

Waterboarding Unethical
Is Waterboarding Ethically Acceptable In the wake of 9/11, waterboarding was a widely used
technique to encourage suspected terrorists with suspected ties to Osama Bin Laden to reveal
information about Al–Qaeda. While the practice of waterboarding is now banned by the United
States, it was widely practiced during the Bush administration. The movie Zero Dark Thirty depicts
waterboarding as a critical torture technique that led to the name of Osama Bin Laden's personal
courier and ultimately the death of Osama Bin Laden (Bigelow, 2012). This paper will seek to
determine if the action of waterboarding suspects in order to locate Osama Bin Laden was ethically
justifiable. To evaluate the ethical–ness of waterboarding, the ethical reasoning model is used
(Malone and McMillan, 2017). This model has four steps. First recognize the conflict; second
evaluate the options; third commit to a decision; finally, act. In this situation, the conflict is
waterboarding as a torture technique. Waterboarding is the act of covering a detainee's face with a
cloth fabric, usually a towel, and pouring water over the subject to give the feeling of drowning and
suffocating. After 9/11, then President Bush signed an executive order that stated, "Common Article
3 of the Geneva Conventions, "mutilation, cruel treatment and torture," does not apply to Al–Qaeda
or Taliban captives" (Andrews and Parlapiano, 2014). From a legal standpoint, torture, to include
waterboarding, was legal in the eyes of the

The Underground Economy in Afghanistan
The underground economy is a very complex structure, functioning outside the restrictions of legal
and tax systems (Tradelinks, 2013). It is also vastly known as the world's fastest growing economy.
Afghanistan is a country located in Southern Asia, East of Iran and North and West of Pakistan.
According to the official CIA website, the total population of this war–torn country is 31,108,077
(2013). The country of Afghanistan is often in the eyes of the media, and has had some very tough
times because of its corrupt reputation. It is a country with many terrorist groups, such as Al Qaeda

Fundamentally speaking, the Taliban is an extremist group that twists the meaning of Islamic
teachings and oppresses anyone who may disagree. They have the power to overrule the
government, and recruit men everyday by offering $200 of earnings per month, a generous salary
compared to the $70 per month that a police officer earns in Afghanistan (IAR, 2012). Although the
US military troops have been in Afghanistan for over a decade now, the terrorist groups remain
irrepressible.
Thirdly, we will take a look at some of the many potential outcomes regarding what is happening in
Afghanistan. As we all know, the World changed after the events of 9–11. The main enemy in the
war that followed was the Al Qaeda. The UN has been working with Afghan authorities in order to
educate the civilians about voting, politics and elections. Further efforts include supporting of
respectable governance and the rule of law, training of police, etc. (Global Policy, 2013). However,
as stated by the Global Policy website, "in a land torn by violence, warlordism, drug production and
intense suspicion of foreigners, these programs seem unreal and very unlikely to succeed" (2013).
Hence, one of the potential outcomes for Afghanistan could be the fact that matters stay the same,
and get worse day by day. Many sources agree that in order for Afghanistan to have a bright future,
Afghans need to start getting along with each

Persuasive Essay On The Iraq War
The U.S. military is the largest and most powerful military in the history of the world. When the
U.S. must use this military might to invade another country, the President and senior elected
officials have a responsibility to ensure the reasoning behind the invasion is ironclad and as
transparent as possible. War should be a last resort, and those in the position of power need exhaust
all diplomatic channels first. Unfortunately this powerful sense of duty was not abided by during the
lead up to the Iraq invasion. Senior officials in the Bush administration deliberately deceived the
public by using manipulative and inaccurate intelligence information in order to gain public
approval for the invasion of Iraq. Trusted elected officials betrayed the oath to their office. Callously
and recklessly caused the loss of life to members of our military, and innocent civilians in Iraq.
Officials in the Bush administration need to be held legally accountable for the grave harm their
deception caused. Former President George Bush and senior officials in the Bush administration
should stand trial for violating the law under US code title 18 section 2441: war crimes, because of
the craven duplicity, unparalleled corruption, and horrific crimes they committed against humanity.
As early as 2001, senior officials in the Bush
administration began to plan the invasion of Iraq
and how to mislead the public into supporting the war. However, the horror of September 11th, 2001

Soviet-Afghan War Essay
When the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan on December 1979, the goal was to help Afghan
communist forces set up a communist government. The Soviet Union felt Afghanistan had key
resources and a foothold in the Middle East to spread communist ideas. The result would be a war
that the Soviet Union wishes it never got involved in and likened to their "Vietnam War", meaning
winning a number of battles but not the war like what happened to the U.S. in Vietnam. The
background of the war, outcome of the war, and impact on the United States are key to
understanding the Soviet–Afghan War. The war began on December 27, 1979 when Soviet
paratroopers invaded Kabul, Afghanistan. The Soviet troops made assaults on key positions like

The Mujahideen would prove to be too powerful of a foe for the Afghan army to control so the
Soviets took charge. More than 100,000 Soviet troops would control major cities and towns, making
the Mujahideen move to the Afghanistan mountains and countryside. Most of the battles would
occur in the mountains with the Soviet army with helicopter support trying to lure the Mujahideen
out of the mountains. The mountains and countryside would provide the Mujahideen with the
ultimate hiding spots and able to use guerilla tactics. The Soviets would bomb civilian locations near
the mountains and countryside to cutoff support to the Mujahedeen but this failed with civilians
fleeing from Afghanistan to nearby countries like Pakistan and Iran. The Soviet army was no match
for the climate in Afghanistan and the religious determination of the Mujahideen. The Mujahideen
was able to gain the upperhand when shoulder–fired antiaircraft missiles were supplied to them by
United States through Pakistan and other equipment by Muslim supporting groups. The Mujahideen
was not organized into one big fighting force but comprised of different sects fighting to dispel
Soviet forces. With now acquiring weapons from outside sources and being joined by Muslim
volunteers from all over the world, the Mujahideen were able to defeat the mighty Soviet Union.

The Reasons that Led to the Attack on the World Trade Center
I was only 6 years old at the time when the 9/11 happened, and I didn't find out until a few weeks
later when my parents showed me the video. I have never seen anything like that but in movies, so
the first thought that came up in my mind when I saw the video was what movie is that. My parents
tried to explain what was happening, but at the time, I couldn't process what had happened or really
understand what they explained. 12 years later I'm 18 now, during that period of time I immigrated
to the United States, in school on the extended date of September 11 we always have the moment of
silence, and I didn't understand why we do the moment of silence, so I did some research about 9/11.
Now I clearly understand that the United States encounter the largest terrorist attack in history, and
the reason why the United States is involved in war with Afghanistan. United States involvements in
Afghanistan is one of the longest wars in our history. Rajiv Chandrasekaran editor of the
Washington post, describes the involvement as "we've asked them to do a lot more, in a smaller
serving force, in some of the longest wars in our history" (2014. Para. 14). U.S. involvement in
Afghanistan has been going on for many years, and for the first time ever, our involvement was a
mistake. The main reason why U.S. is involved in Afghanistan it's for the attack on 9/11. As the
Unite Nations charter's collective security frame work in the 21st century describes, "In 1996,

assassinated, Austria–Hungary declared war on Serbia, who had an alliance with Russia. When
Russia began to mobilize its troops to protect Serbia from Austria–Hungary, Germany, (who was

c. Imperialism also played a role as a cause for WW1. In the late 1800s, less and less land that could
be colonized existed. This sparked a scramble for the land left in Africa. Britain and France had the
largest empires, with Britain having a presence on 5 continents and France present in 4. Germany
was not very quick to acquire colonies, and only had small holdings in Africa. This angered the
British and French, and so increased nationalism and hostility towards Germany. Territory and
imperialism can be considered a reason for World War 1. 2. Below is a list of various death tolls of
different countries fighting in WW1. a. Germany's death toll was about 1.7 million people killed
(actual number may vary, depending on if you account for the number of people who went missing
or were taken as prisoners). Their total number of casualties, including people wounded and
missing, was 7.1 million people. b. France's death toll was 1.3 million people killed. Their total
number of casualties was 6.1 million deaths. c. Russia's death toll was 1.7 million people. Their total
number of casualties was 9.1 million deaths. 3. There were many new weapons first used in WW1.

both sides rendering a future effect on the campaign. Taliban and foreign fighters surrendered near
Kunduz and were being held as enemy combatants at Qala–i–Jangi fortress prison for interrogations
by the American Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). The prisoners revolted and the ensuing fighting
escalated into one of the bloodiest battles of the conflict. Northern Alliance fighters, assisted by
British and American Special Forces and air support, to quelled the revolt. As a result all but 86
prisoners were killed. United States (US) suffered the first American fatality during the 2001

Major Mark Davis conducted extensive interviews on this topic with air, ground, and special
operations commanders, staff officers, and other forces that participated in Operation Anaconda. In
his research, Davis found some major problems had occurred that caused a failure in coordination
efforts. The first error Davis sighted was that "the DOD failed to establish proper command
structures and relationships needed for integration among the systems" (MacPherson 2005, p. 350).
This made it difficult for air and ground forces to communicate among each other when the battle
was underway. Davis also sites that U.S. Central Command Chief Franks, made a costly decision to
command the war from his office in Tampa, Florida. He was 7,000 miles and 10 time zones away
from the battle front. Chief Franks believed that rather than move himself and his unit, would speed
up the operating progress and not slow down the mission. Franks and his command relied on video
phone conferences instead of personal communications, which led to limited communications.
Another problem was that Franks gave lists of plans to be carried out rather than one battle plan.
Also, because of the large numbers of independent units that participated, it was impossible for
Franks to maintain communication presence and coordinate over this large command structure. This
ultimately left decision making in the hands of CENTCOM staff

A Wicked Genius Essay
A Wicked Genius An immeasurable number of brutal casualties around the world have been caused
by foreign affairs, extreme ideologies, or even the occasional unfaithful spouse. Being able to infer a
suitable conclusion to the downfall of flight TWA 800 had been a pressing issue for American
officials. Many conclusions were proposed and rejected, elaborate theories were created and
squandered, but one man should stand out like a sore thumb. Ramzi Yousef, the bomb making
mastermind of Al–Qaeda, might have had more to do with the unfortunate incident than the
mainstream might believe. A man of many identities, Yousef was at the pinnacle of America's most
wanted terrorist list and he was the MVP of Al–Qaeda. Dubbed the Mozart of terror by Peter Lance,
Yousef grew up in the Kuwaiti oil city of Fuhayhil and acquired his engineering degree in the
United Kingdom. Shortly afterwards, Yousef left for the early al–Qaeda training camps and learned
the ins and outs of building improvised explosive devices. Osama bin Laden began to take notice of
his bomb making expertise and recruited him to be his chief point man on terror. Bin Laden and
Yousef began their plots of destruction early in the 1990s, with plans to bomb the WTC amongst
other large icons. As bloodthirsty and conniving as al–Qaeda were, it is not a shock to consider
placing the responsibility for the fall of TWA–800 on Yousef and al–Qaeda, they had the skills and
resources to accomplish the deed, but could there not be any

Terrorism Is A Global Issue
Terrorism is a global issue that most Canadians have come accustomed to hearing. Due to the
sudden rise of terrorist acts with the Boston bombings and the shootings in Paris, terrorism is all that
seems to appear on the news. But there are many parts of terrorism that people don't know about.
Like the fact that at one point the United States armed Muslim extremist in Afghanistan, who would
later make up Al Qeada, to help them win the fight against the soviets who once occupied
Afghanistan. Terrorism is a very broad subject, but through this essay I will be discussing the history
of terrorism, its psychological factors, sociological factors, how is one brought up to become a
terrorist, differing viewpoints and an experts opinion.
Terrorism is defined as the use of violence or intimidation in the pursuit of political aim. The term
was coined in 1793 by Maximillian Robespierre during his reign of terror in the French revolution.
Robespierre would have people who opposed his ways killed. Since those days terrorist groups have
formed all over the world. The Irish public army is a terrorist group that is fighting to become a
national republic rather than be considered part of Great Britain. Distinct ethnic groups in turkey,
Syria, Iran, and Sri Lanka have fought for autonomy since the beginning of the 20th century. The
first experience the western society had with terrorism was in the 1972 Munich Olympic when a

can be a single person acting on personal wishes or a group of people with an ultimate goal. The
goals of a terrorist are normally political, ideological, or religious in nature.

This action is an example of an ideological action.
The Hizballah (Party of God) is an organization that has taken actions against the United States,

Analysis Of The Goat Herder Dilemma
Introduction
Before I joined the Army, one of my mentors sat me down, looked me sternly in the face and said,
"Even though you are not going into the infantry, even though you might not deploy, at some point
in time the Army may put you in a situation and ask that you take another person's life. You need to
square yourself with that. If you cannot do that and pull that trigger when that time comes, then you
should not join." It is important for new officers to think about how they will make ethical decisions
and what choices they may face. Conducting a cost–benefit analysis when faced with two unethical
options is an effective way of choosing the "least bad" option and resulting relative cost. The United
States has ratified international laws such as the law of armed conflict that govern how and in what
manner the United States will conduct warfare. Within these documents are definitions of non–
combatants and protected peoples who will not be brutalized or killed during the conduct of war.
However, revolutionaries and insurgents frequently use these ethical guidelines against greater
powers. Insurgent tactics may include the use of women and children to detonate or carry an
explosive or use them as a reconnaissance force. Adhering to the ethical law and rules that guide
U.S. soldiers may result in mission failure and the death or some or many of your teammates.

Important battles in a war are the ones that not only define the campaign but also the men who take
part in them. An important battle often shapes the conditions for the rest of the war and enables

assessing the significance of those actions. Additionally, this paper will identify an alternate ending

measures and signatures intelligence assets and correctly analyzed the information those assets
provided before the start of Operation Anaconda, estimates of enemy composition, disposition,
capabilities, and intentions would have been known and could have drastically reduced the amount
of casualties Coalition Forces incurred. Second and third order effects of realizing this intelligence
would have shattered the enemy's ability to conduct major combat operations and set the conditions
for stability operations to take place.
Operation Anaconda was a joint effort between elements of the 10th Mountain Division, 101st
Airborne Division, Special Operations Forces from multiple nations, and local Afghan fighters to
drive out al–Qaeda and Taliban fighters from the Shahikot Valley in order to set the conditions for
successful stability operations in Afghanistan. The battle took place in late February

Taking A Look At Operation Anaconda

  • 1. Taking a Look at Operation Anaconda Operation Anaconda was the largest battle fought in Afghanistan by conventional forces. It took place after US Special Forces aligned with Afghan forces from the Northern alliance ran bombing campaigns that crushed the Taliban in late 2001. The operation would take place in the Shahikot valley which had peaks that were anywhere around 8,000 to 12,000 feet. The high altitude, rocky terrain and the cold weather prove difficult for air assault missions in the area of operations (AO) and for conventional forces that were not trained for combat operations at such high altitudes and cold weather. In mid–January the US Intelligence community noticed the massing of a sizeable Al–Qaeda force moving towards the Shahikot valley in Southeastern Afghanistan. Planning began for an operation to strike at the Al Qaeda troops before they could become a hindrance for future operations, the local populace as well block rat routs out of Afghanistan. But the tribes in this part of Afghanistan were considerably less friendly to America than the Northern Alliance. The reason for bringing in Conventional forces for Operation Anaconda, in which previous operations were mainly Special Operation led was the unreliable Afghan fighters. The lack of confidence in the Afghan fighters in that part of the country was partly to blame for the failure to trap the Al Qaeda forces in Tora Bora and expectedly through inexperience and neglect let Osama Bin Laden (UBL) possibly escape in a rat route into ... • 3. The Attack On The World Trade Center The war in Afghanistan is well known for all the destruction it's caused in the Middle East. Two things well known for the destruction is the attacks on the world trade center, and catching Osama Bin Laden. It all started September 11th, 2001 when Afghanistan attacked America. These attacks are by far the worst terrorist attack on American soil. These attacks will never be forgotten. The first attacks on the world trade center were not the 9/11 attacks. In fact, the first attack was on February 26th, 1993. When a few terrorists put large explosives under the world trade center. The terrorists were attempting to bring down the world trade center but it didn't. There were six deaths and over 1,000 injured. They had traced the van to a few people who attended a mosque in Brooklyn. Later the leader of the attacks, Ramzi Yousef, sent a message to the New York Time saying that the attack was retaliation for Americans support of Israel, then fled to Pakistan. Ramzi Yousef appeared again in the Philippians and had an apartment that he was making explosives in. He made a bomb that he took onto an airplane. He placed it in the airplane and had a timer on it and it exploded. The explosive killed one person and injured ten. Afterward Ramzi decided he wanted to make more attacks on the U.S. He later was making more explosives in his apartment with a friend. An accident happened while mixing chemicals and a fire started. Ramzi managed to escape somewhere in the Philippians, but ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Operation Argo And The Killing Of Osama Bin Ladin Essay Introduction: The Central Intelligence Agency, hereafter referred to as the CIA, is one of the most well–known and fascinating intelligence agencies throughout the world. For the most part, when the CIA comes up in the news, it is to report that the agency failed in doing something. This paper will analyze different successes and failures of well–known operations of the CIA. The successes that will be analyzed are Operation Argo and the killing of Osama Bin Ladin. Operation Argo has recently become well known due to a movie being released about the operation. The killing of Osama Bin Ladin is probably the most popular case that the CIA had completed due to its significance in a time when the United States was quite vulnerable. This paper will review these two successes of the agency and analyze how these missions were successful and why. The two failures that will be discussed are the attacks on September 11, 2001 and the Bay of Pigs Invasion. The attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001 are crucial to the American people and to the Intelligence Community. It is important to analyze these attacks in order to figure out what, if anything, could have been done differently that may have prevented these attacks from occurring. The Bay of Pigs Invasion is an infamous failure of the United States as well as the CIA in which many mistakes were made. The CIA plays an essential role in the safety of the United States and its people. Due to its high importance, it is crucial to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Who Is The Leader Of The Indian National Congress? At first glance, these two historical figures could not seem more distant. Mohandas Gandhi campaigned a universal and tolerant version of religion and upheld these beliefs through his political movement. In contrast, Osama bin Laden has been credited for creating an antagonistic and combative interpretation of traditional Islam that led to some of the most gruesome acts of terror observed in the twenty first century. Although both of their ideals stand on opposite ends of the spectrum, they both achieved an influential status as religious and political leaders. Both can be credited for provoking thousands of people to act on their behalf. Although their ideologies were vastly different, these two men can both be regarded as religious extremists who made strides within their own political agendas. Gandhi once stated, "Those who say religion has nothing to do with politics do not know what religion is" ("Preface"). Both men used religion to convey a heavy and distinct political argument, although their practices are poles apart. Gandhi joined the leadership of the Indian National Congress; the political body that advocated India's independence from Great Britain ("Mohandas"). By doing so, he was able to gain a platform big enough to consciously and efficiently spread his religious demonstrations of non–violence. Gandhi endorsed the principle of ahimsa to the practice of his resistance campaigns. He did not advocate the term passive resistance, but instead labeled ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. The Us Led Afghan War Ignited After The 9 / 11 Attacks On... The US led Afghan war ignited soon after the 9/11 attacks on America, killing approximately 3000 US citizens in New York City at the time of George W Bush's presidency. The tragic attack was brutally carried out by a prominent Al–Qaida Leader Osama Bin Laden, who had just fled his hometown in Saudi Arabia and was living in Afghanistan's rugged mountains of Tora Bora. The Taliban Government heavily dominated Afghanistan at the time Osama Bin Laden carried out attacks on US soil, and he claimed responsibility for the attack subsequently. As a result, US requested the then Taliban leaders Mullah Omar to hand over Osama to the US authorities since he was responsible for the ferocious inhumane attacks on the US soil, killing thousands and damaging millions of dollar worth of property for revenge and retaliation purposes. The then Taliban leader rejected the US's offer and denied giving up Osama to the US authorities considering him a special guest, and giving up guest was significantly against cultural code and values for the Taliban, especially for Mullah Omar – the leader. Therefore, George W Bush declared war on Afghanistan, sending thousands of troops and attacking the country. However, taking revenge, retaliation from Osama, and even demolishing Taliban's terroristic domination over Afghanistan was a reasonable excuse for the US to take immediate action, but sending thousands of US soldiers who some didn't make it back home, spending billions of US dollars, which also caused ... • 17. The Allegory Of George Saunders's 'The Red Bow' George Saunders' "The Red Bow" is an allegory of America's 2003 invasion of Iraq. The invasion was ordered not long after the terrorist attacks in the United States orchestrated by the Afghanistan based al–Qaeda leader, Osama Bin Laden. The attacks resulted in a panic led by American authorities to find and destroy any person or group that could be a threat to American freedom. Since the attacks in 2001, the United States military has led attacks in Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia, Yemen, Pakistan, Libya, and Syria. Today, we are beginning to see the long–term effects of the war in Iraq as ISIL fighters try to reintegrate into society and are faced with a moral panic. In "The Red Bow", Uncle Matt symbolizes the source of irrational fears similar to that which one witnesses today. Uncle Matt, stokes the flames of hysteria regarding the danger dogs pose to humans. Dr. Bonn, a professor of sociology and criminology, calls this type of hysteria "moral panic", he describes it in his paper; "Moral panic is a public and political response to an exaggeration or distortion of the threat posed to society by some allegedly harmful individual or group" (2). What began as an effort to prevent more attacks on innocent children, quickly escalated to a witch hunt. The first act was to kill the dog that likely killed his niece. Next, Uncle Matt ordered the culling of neighbors' dogs and dogs that had been seen with dogs that were suspected in the killing of the niece. He ramped up the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Well for me I was just finishing a 3.1–mile run (5K) at Naval Amphibious Base Coronado. For all you none military types of people who have never visited one of America's amazing cities it is home to the US Navy's West Coast Special Operations community. And let it be known I was not a Navy SEAL, SWCC (Special Warfare Combatant Craftsmen) Operator or an EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) technician. I worked SEAL Team 5 as part of the support staff. Granted when the Platoon I was assigned to deployed, I was wheels up with the team. As I got back into the locker room at my command I remember looking up at the television and seeing that a plane had just hit the North Tower of the World Trade Center. Now from time to time I would remember hearing about a little single engine plane flying off its course and getting close into Manhattan; so at that moment that is what was going through my head at that exact moment. Well after I got out of the shower at 9:06am I heard that another airplane hit the South Tower. Now being from New Jersey and knowing the travel restrictions that surround New York City; at that exact moment I started to come to the realization that our Nation may be under attack. In a combat zone, this becomes even more important because lives and the success of the mission depend on it. This was not the case however, during a fight called Operation Anaconda. The purpose of this paper is to point out what went wrong with the lack of planning, coordination, rehearsal, and preparation between Air and ground communications, and how it proved to be critical during Operation Anaconda. The ending results were a delayed execution and several friendly casualties. In February 2002, Special Forces intelligence agents along with Advanced Force Operations (AFO), and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), were starting to make a connection between an increase presence of high–value targets (HVT), the Taliban, and Al–Qaeda fighters in an area called Shahi–Kot Valley (Neville, 2005). Shahi–Kot is located in Afghanistan, just southeast of a town called Zormat. A plan was devised to eliminate the enemy threat in that area. Major Franklin L. Hagenbeck was to command the mission called Operation Anaconda. This operation was the first large–scale battle in the United States War in Afghanistan since the Battle of Tora Bora (Call, 2007, p. 57–86). Operation Anaconda was also unique in the fact that it would involve a great number of Afghan militia, U.S. and coalition Special Operations, and conventional forces (U.S. Army, n.d.), ... With their blocking the information that the US could learn their intentions they enabled themselves to have the freedom to move and conduct the operations needed to conduct the 9/11 attacks. Their deception operations with their uses of cover stories that seem not only benign but also provided the cover needed to move back and forth, one of these aspects through the use of deception, were able to make the US unsuspicious of their actions presented through false information. This very quote from the epic Beowulf, sets the tone and very intense qualities of older epics. This specific epic, focuses on the hero and Beowulf, who is the only warrior capable of defeating the vicious villainous creature Grendel, and his mother. Beowulf shares the qualities of many other epic heroes such as showing the nature of being almost superhuman, being the deciding factor in the wellbeing of his people, and showing uncontested bravery no matter the obstacle they must face. In more modern times, the United States Delta Force can be considered an epic heroes based on the sheer values and courage held by its members. The United States 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment–Delta, or Delta Force for short, is considered one of, if not the best, elite Special Forces units in the world. Its highly classified missions, state of the art combat equipment, members from the highest echelon special operations teams in the United States, and agonizing training regime, etcetera, has put this unit on the top. Beowulf was considered the strongest man or warrior in his time, trekking through the unknowns, journey's that felt like they would never end, battles that seemed to last forever. This man is known as the mastermind to some people. The paper's objective is to compile and construct a detailed outline of Khalid's life and draw a conclusion on motives for his attacking of the United States. This will help create a profile of behaviors and choices that will allow Counter–Terror to have information to look for in suspects. Thus, allowing the apprehension of new terrorists. The information that caused this paper to come into existence was reading the 9/11 Report A Graphic Adaptation, specifically in Chapter 5, Al Qaeda Aims at the American Homeland. The Original reaction stood out to me for the research paper when I learned about the planning that Khalid Sheik Mohamed did and his work with his nephew in the 1993 with the World Trade Center Bombing. Since Khalid Mohamed was a key player in the first mass attack on the United States from a foreign group since Pearl Harbor, I Believe we must understand all of Khalid's interests so we can protect ourselves from others with the same ideals. This paper is organized from early life and schooling to planning of the 1993 World Trade Center attack, then to the 9/11 attacks planning and execution, and lastly closing with the location and on Khalid Sheik Mohamed's current location. Osama Bin Laden was one of the then most wanted fugitives and terrorists for his involvement in the U.S. embassy bombings. Even though the leader, Osama Bin Laden, was killed in 2011, the terrorist network still exists. Two days after his death, a new leader was elected. Osama Bin Laden was not the only one to be killed though, an FBI agent shot the leader of Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula and the leader of the Al Qaeda in East Africa was shot by a Policeman. Despite these killings, the Al Qaeda network is powerful and is still growing in the amount of their supporters. Al Qaeda is a global threat because of their worldwide supporters, financial means and their access to weapons. In 2001, the groups were only active in Afghanistan and Pakistan and had little support from other areas. Now, the network has spread across five different continents, with seven different groups. They have a group in the Islamic Maghreb, Afghanistan, Europe, Oceana, Pakistan, East Africa, and the Arabian Peninsula. They have a great advantage by having all these different groups in different places because now they are so easily able to conduct an attack anywhere around the world. There are three different branches of protection in The United States: the Navy, the Army, and the Air Force. Accordingly, each of these has its own tribute to the Special Operations Forces. The Navy contributes the Navy SEALs, the Air Force provides Air Force SOCOM, and the Army provides the Green Berets, Delta Force, and the Rangers. Each of these sectors is very selective and secretive. The SEALs are likely the most highly trained forces out of all of the Special Operations Units. SEAL stands for Sea, Air, and Land team. Three men were killed in the strike, although the target of the mission, Osama Bin Laden, turned out to not be there. There has been much debate as to whether the benefits of drone warfare outweigh the risks, however there are more pros then cons to drone warfare (Powers). The use of drone strikes has increased over the years. Only 50 strikes were approved by the Bush administration, whereas the Obama administration approved 506 strikes (Powers). Drone strikes haven proven to be very useful. They helped to bring down a huge terrorist threat to the United States. According to Michael V. Hayden, a retired Air–Force four–star general and author of Playing to the Edge: American Intelligence in the Age of Terror, drone strikes "disrupted terrorist plots and reduced the original Qaeda organization along the Afghanistan–Pakistan border to a shell of its former self.". Drone strikes were crucial in stopping Osama Bin Laden. The strikes worried the leadership of Al Qaeda, and they wanted to stop operations and go into hiding. Drone strikes have succeeded in causing fear throughout Al Qaeda and taking out many members of the organization, making any losses well worth it (Hayden). One major downfall in using drones in warfare is the loss of civilian lives, but the military takes many steps to prevent this. It is debated as to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

September 11, 2001 marks the day of a horrific event that had changed America's foreign policies and outlook on national security protocol. The response that the U.S. government had towards this act of terror was a response involving the pursuit of justice against those who committed the heinous actions that killed thousands of innocent Americans. The U.S. government wanted to combat our enemies by pursuing national interests in an attempt to stop the occurrences of terrorism that were occurring from the Middle East region. The government would do this by first demanding the surrender of Al–Qaeda leaders including Osama Bin Laden and those that were involved with the planning of the attack. Ground forces were later sent to search for Al–Qaeda members when they did not comply with the demands. The U.S. government had goals of developing a peaceful relation with Middle Eastern governments to help combat Al–Qaeda forces; but, while the U.S. government had intentions of containing a global threat of terrorism, I believe that U.S. government actions have unintentionally unleashed a terrorism outbreak within the Middle East. With intention to stop terrorist acts from taking place, the interests of the U.S. have undoubtedly caused anger among the people of Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran and may have caused terrorist organizations to benefit from actions made by the mistakes of our U.S. military. • 46. Waterboarding Unethical Is Waterboarding Ethically Acceptable In the wake of 9/11, waterboarding was a widely used technique to encourage suspected terrorists with suspected ties to Osama Bin Laden to reveal information about Al–Qaeda. While the practice of waterboarding is now banned by the United States, it was widely practiced during the Bush administration. The movie Zero Dark Thirty depicts waterboarding as a critical torture technique that led to the name of Osama Bin Laden's personal courier and ultimately the death of Osama Bin Laden (Bigelow, 2012). This paper will seek to determine if the action of waterboarding suspects in order to locate Osama Bin Laden was ethically justifiable. To evaluate the ethical–ness of waterboarding, the ethical reasoning model is used (Malone and McMillan, 2017). This model has four steps. First recognize the conflict; second evaluate the options; third commit to a decision; finally, act. In this situation, the conflict is waterboarding as a torture technique. Waterboarding is the act of covering a detainee's face with a cloth fabric, usually a towel, and pouring water over the subject to give the feeling of drowning and suffocating. After 9/11, then President Bush signed an executive order that stated, "Common Article 3 of the Geneva Conventions, "mutilation, cruel treatment and torture," does not apply to Al–Qaeda or Taliban captives" (Andrews and Parlapiano, 2014). When the U.S. must use this military might to invade another country, the President and senior elected officials have a responsibility to ensure the reasoning behind the invasion is ironclad and as transparent as possible. War should be a last resort, and those in the position of power need exhaust all diplomatic channels first. Unfortunately this powerful sense of duty was not abided by during the lead up to the Iraq invasion. Senior officials in the Bush administration deliberately deceived the public by using manipulative and inaccurate intelligence information in order to gain public approval for the invasion of Iraq. Trusted elected officials betrayed the oath to their office. Callously and recklessly caused the loss of life to members of our military, and innocent civilians in Iraq. Officials in the Bush administration need to be held legally accountable for the grave harm their deception caused. Former President George Bush and senior officials in the Bush administration should stand trial for violating the law under US code title 18 section 2441: war crimes, because of the craven duplicity, unparalleled corruption, and horrific crimes they committed against humanity. The Reasons that Led to the Attack on the World Trade Center I was only 6 years old at the time when the 9/11 happened, and I didn't find out until a few weeks later when my parents showed me the video. I have never seen anything like that but in movies, so the first thought that came up in my mind when I saw the video was what movie is that. My parents tried to explain what was happening, but at the time, I couldn't process what had happened or really understand what they explained. 12 years later I'm 18 now, during that period of time I immigrated to the United States, in school on the extended date of September 11 we always have the moment of silence, and I didn't understand why we do the moment of silence, so I did some research about 9/11. In the late 1800s, less and less land that could be colonized existed. This sparked a scramble for the land left in Africa. Britain and France had the largest empires, with Britain having a presence on 5 continents and France present in 4. Germany was not very quick to acquire colonies, and only had small holdings in Africa. This angered the British and French, and so increased nationalism and hostility towards Germany. Territory and imperialism can be considered a reason for World War 1. 2. Below is a list of various death tolls of different countries fighting in WW1. a. Germany's death toll was about 1.7 million people killed (actual number may vary, depending on if you account for the number of people who went missing or were taken as prisoners). Their total number of casualties, including people wounded and missing, was 7.1 million people. b. France's death toll was 1.3 million people killed. Their total number of casualties was 6.1 million deaths. c. Russia's death toll was 1.7 million people. Their total number of casualties was 9.1 million deaths. 3. There were many new weapons first used in WW1. a. The Roth–Steyr M07 is known to be the first self–loading pistol that was used by a major military power. b. • 62. The Battle Of Qala I Jangi This paper explores the battle of Qala–i–Jangi, with alternate outcomes and relevant capabilities of both sides rendering a future effect on the campaign. Taliban and foreign fighters surrendered near Kunduz and were being held as enemy combatants at Qala–i–Jangi fortress prison for interrogations by the American Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). The prisoners revolted and the ensuing fighting escalated into one of the bloodiest battles of the conflict. Northern Alliance fighters, assisted by British and American Special Forces and air support, to quelled the revolt. As a result all but 86 prisoners were killed. United States (US) suffered the first American fatality during the 2001 invasion of Afghanistan. Among the surviving prisoners was an American citizen. The subsequent lessons learned will be employed throughout campaigns on the Global War on Terrorism, Operation Enduring Freedom. (Wikipedia, 2015) Overview of Qala–i–Jangi Battle The battle of Qala–i–Jangi may have been prevented by use of the most basic techniques yielding intelligence and saving lives, this paper will show the events as they occurred analyzing the failures and the effects. November 2001, Mazar e Sharif located in Northern Afghanistan would host the bloodiest battle from 25 November 2001 through 1 December 2001. • 64. Operation Anaconda Case Study Analysis Operation Anaconda Case Study When it comes to succeeding at anything, it is important to plan, prepare, and rehears the outcome. In February 2002, Special Forces intelligence agents along with Advanced Force Operations (AFO), and the Central Intelligence ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Major Mark Davis conducted extensive interviews on this topic with air, ground, and special operations commanders, staff officers, and other forces that participated in Operation Anaconda. In his research, Davis found some major problems had occurred that caused a failure in coordination efforts. The first error Davis sighted was that "the DOD failed to establish proper command structures and relationships needed for integration among the systems" (MacPherson 2005, p. 350). This made it difficult for air and ground forces to communicate among each other when the battle was underway. Davis also sites that U.S. Central Command Chief Franks, made a costly decision to command the war from his office in Tampa, Florida. He was 7,000 miles and 10 time zones away from the battle front. Chief Franks believed that rather than move himself and his unit, would speed up the operating progress and not slow down the mission. Franks and his command relied on video phone conferences instead of personal communications, which led to limited communications. Another problem was that Franks gave lists of plans to be carried out rather than one battle plan. Also, because of the large numbers of independent units that participated, it was impossible for Franks to maintain communication presence and coordinate over this large command structure. This ultimately left decision making in the hands of CENTCOM staff ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 66. A Wicked Genius Essay A Wicked Genius An immeasurable number of brutal casualties around the world have been caused by foreign affairs, extreme ideologies, or even the occasional unfaithful spouse. Being able to infer a suitable conclusion to the downfall of flight TWA 800 had been a pressing issue for American officials. Many conclusions were proposed and rejected, elaborate theories were created and squandered, but one man should stand out like a sore thumb. Ramzi Yousef, the bomb making mastermind of Al–Qaeda, might have had more to do with the unfortunate incident than the mainstream might believe. A man of many identities, Yousef was at the pinnacle of America's most wanted terrorist list and he was the MVP of Al–Qaeda. Dubbed the Mozart of terror by Peter Lance, Yousef grew up in the Kuwaiti oil city of Fuhayhil and acquired his engineering degree in the United Kingdom. Shortly afterwards, Yousef left for the early al–Qaeda training camps and learned the ins and outs of building improvised explosive devices. Osama bin Laden began to take notice of his bomb making expertise and recruited him to be his chief point man on terror. Bin Laden and Yousef began their plots of destruction early in the 1990s, with plans to bomb the WTC amongst other large icons. As bloodthirsty and conniving as al–Qaeda were, it is not a shock to consider placing the responsibility for the fall of TWA–800 on Yousef and al–Qaeda, they had the skills and resources to accomplish the deed, but could there not be any ... • 68. War on Terror Essay Since the days of the Cuban Missile Crisis (Marfleet, 1997) in the sixties, the United States has become increasingly more relaxed as to the possibility of an attack on American soil. Since the attack on the Twin Towers in September of 2001, by the terrorist group al–Qaeda, the United States has again become more aware and alert to this possibility. Not only did the attack on the United States bring Americans together as a country united, it also brought on changes that included the newly developed Department of Homeland Security. Homeland Security is now charged with not only protecting the country and territories from another terrorist attack but also responding to an attack, man–made accident, and natural disasters. Al–Awlaki has been linked to multiple attacks and attempted attacks on the United States. I would have to agree with our government in their assessment of the terroristic threat in reference to Al–Awlaki. Terrorism seems to be a Lernaean Hydra in comparison in that, when you remove one leader, two more replace them. Al–Qaida, while weakened by the loss of their leader, is still very much a threat. With almost endless finances, their ability to infiltrate and live among us is great. While I am sure the government makes every attempt to find and flag any person having ties to terrorist, how can you fight an enemy you cannot see? It is not as if they wear red or grey coats as they did in the Civil War. While doing the research paper one thing became increasing clear; I have no more idea as to the location and the means by which to attack, than the federal government does. I don't believe that the ability to hijack a commercial aircraft exists anymore. The attack on the Pentagon would most likely be a one–time event also. In some respects, as a nation, we are very good at learning from our mistakes. While the government has not told us of safety measures taken to protect such military targets, I am sure the measures have still been taken. So with the major targets removed from accessibility, they are more likely to step down to "soft ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 70. Terrorism Is A Global Issue Terrorism is a global issue that most Canadians have come accustomed to hearing. Due to the sudden rise of terrorist acts with the Boston bombings and the shootings in Paris, terrorism is all that seems to appear on the news. But there are many parts of terrorism that people don't know about. Like the fact that at one point the United States armed Muslim extremist in Afghanistan, who would later make up Al Qeada, to help them win the fight against the soviets who once occupied Afghanistan. Terrorism is a very broad subject, but through this essay I will be discussing the history of terrorism, its psychological factors, sociological factors, how is one brought up to become a terrorist, differing viewpoints and an experts opinion. Terrorism is defined as the use of violence or intimidation in the pursuit of political aim. The term was coined in 1793 by Maximillian Robespierre during his reign of terror in the French revolution. Robespierre would have people who opposed his ways killed. Since those days terrorist groups have formed all over the world. The Irish public army is a terrorist group that is fighting to become a national republic rather than be considered part of Great Britain. Distinct ethnic groups in turkey, Syria, Iran, and Sri Lanka have fought for autonomy since the beginning of the 20th century. The first experience the western society had with terrorism was in the 1972 Munich Olympic when a Palestinian group kidnapped and killed Israeli athletes. Religiously ... • 72. TERRORISM: DEFINITION, TEMPLATE, AND EXAMPLES Essay TERRORISM: DEFINITION, TEMPLATE, AND EXAMPLES In order to determine whether an action is a terrorist act or not, terrorism must first be defined. Terrorism is the use or threatening the use of violence as a weapon to influence a person or a group of people to change policies or influence decisions according to the terrorist's desires. The terrorist can be a single person acting on personal wishes or a group of people with an ultimate goal. The goals of a terrorist are normally political, ideological, or religious in nature. Once an action has been identified as a possible terrorist act, it now becomes necessary to further explore the reason(s) of the individual(s) behind the action. The elements that are ... On 20 March 1995, Aum members simultaneously released the chemical nerve agent sarin on several Tokyo subway trains, killing 12 people and injuring up to 6,000 more. This event was carefully planned in order to achieve the goal of drawing members into the group in order to receive more money, the group required all members to donate everything they owned to the organization. This action is an example of an ideological action. The Hizballah (Party of God) is an organization that has taken actions against the United States, specifically the Marines serving at Beirut in 1983. In this incident, a suicide bomber drove an explosives–laden truck through the inadequate perimeter defenses before setting off his bomb. The resulting explosion collapsed the building, killing hundreds. Hizballah believes that Israel is planning to take over a good portion of the Middle East from the Euphrates to the Nile as God promised to Abraham in Genesis 15:18–21. As far as Hizballah is concerned, fighting Israel's occupation is not just a national duty. It is a religious obligation that falls within their concept of jihad and they are determined to continue the fight until Lebanese soil is liberated. The Hizballah organization is an example of religious terrorists. On September 11, 2001, terrorism became a reality to the American people. Operation Anaconda Battle Analysis John Doe Colonel Mustard MIL Battle Analysis March 2010 Operation Anaconda Battle Analysis In the mountainous Shah–i–Khot region south of the city of Gardez in Eastern Afghanistan, Operation Anaconda took place early March 2002. Operation Anaconda, to this day, stands as the largest reported ground action in the Afghan war. This 17–day battle led to eight U.S. casualties and over 50 wounded. Operation Anaconda is viewed as a success due to coalition forces being able to kill and root out several hundred Taliban and al Qaeda fighters, which left U.S. and coalition forces in control of the Shah–i–Khot Valley. Originally intended to be a three–day battle with light resistance, a seven–day battle ensued with intense fighting and was finally ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Air support had planned to bombard enemy positions for 55 minutes; however, miscommunication between Texas 14 and higher led to a short bombardment and a total of six bombs being dropped. TF HAMMER was unsuccessful in entering the valley due to a heavy amount of small arms fire and mortar attacks. The lack of air support triggered by bad communication frustrated Afghan and Special Forces alike and led to Afghan trucks being hit heavily by pre–registered mortar fire on known choke points by Taliban and al Qaeda fighters. Unity of command is crucial in conducting a successful military operation: communication flows smoothly through a unified command, but unfortunately for a non–unified command, the reverse effect holds true. Another principle of war that was violated several times was the element of surprise. This had to do, however, with a direct correlation to communication and unity of command. In the late hours of 3 March 2002, the SEAL team, MAKO 30 was picked up by a MH–47 heading east of the peak of Takur Ghar, which is the tallest point in the Shah–i–Khot region. A problem was encountered with the MH–47 and the team had to change aircraft. This placed them off of their suspected timeline and did not allow MAKO 30 with enough time to reach the ... • 76. Analysis Of The Goat Herder Dilemma Introduction Before I joined the Army, one of my mentors sat me down, looked me sternly in the face and said, "Even though you are not going into the infantry, even though you might not deploy, at some point in time the Army may put you in a situation and ask that you take another person's life. You need to square yourself with that. If you cannot do that and pull that trigger when that time comes, then you should not join." It is important for new officers to think about how they will make ethical decisions and what choices they may face. Conducting a cost–benefit analysis when faced with two unethical options is an effective way of choosing the "least bad" option and resulting relative cost. The United States has ratified international laws such as the law of armed conflict that govern how and in what manner the United States will conduct warfare. Within these documents are definitions of non– combatants and protected peoples who will not be brutalized or killed during the conduct of war. However, revolutionaries and insurgents frequently use these ethical guidelines against greater powers. Insurgent tactics may include the use of women and children to detonate or carry an explosive or use them as a reconnaissance force. Adhering to the ethical law and rules that guide U.S. soldiers may result in mission failure and the death or some or many of your teammates. • 78. Operation Anaconda By Reviewing The Setting Important battles in a war are the ones that not only define the campaign but also the men who take part in them. An important battle often shapes the conditions for the rest of the war and enables future success. The purpose of this paper is to provide a thorough battle analysis of Operation Anaconda by reviewing the setting, describing the actions of friendly and enemy forces, and then assessing the significance of those actions. Additionally, this paper will identify an alternate ending based on the use of available intelligence assets. Had military intelligence effectively employed measures and signatures intelligence assets and correctly analyzed the information those assets provided before the start of Operation Anaconda, estimates of enemy composition, disposition, capabilities, and intentions would have been known and could have drastically reduced the amount of casualties Coalition Forces incurred. Second and third order effects of realizing this intelligence would have shattered the enemy's ability to conduct major combat operations and set the conditions for stability operations to take place. Operation Anaconda was a joint effort between elements of the 10th Mountain Division, 101st Airborne Division, Special Operations Forces from multiple nations, and local Afghan fighters to drive out al–Qaeda and Taliban fighters from the Shahikot Valley in order to set the conditions for successful stability operations in Afghanistan. The battle took place in late February ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
