There were three main sites used during the Manhattan Project to produce plutonium and enriched
uranium; The Hanford site in Hanford, Washington, the Y–12 site in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, and the
K–25 site in Oak Ridge as well. On January 16, 1943 General Groves selected Hanford, Washington
as the site for the production of plutonium. Plutonium was identified on February 24, 1941 by Glenn
T. Seaborg's research group. It was discovered that plutonium is two times a likely to produce

The key idea in implosion assembly is to compress a subcritical spherical, fissionable mass by using
specially designed high explosives. Implosion works by initiating the detonation of the explosives
on their outer surface, so that the detonation wave moves inward. Careful design allows the creation
of a smooth, symmetrical implosion shock wave. This shock wave is transmitted to the fissionable
core and compresses it, raising the density to the point of supercriticality
(nuclearweaponarchive.org). The issue with implosion is that the detonation of the bomb must form
a symmetrical shock wave to evenly compress the plutonium core. This caused a problem for the
scientists at Los Alamos. The scientists there then thought of a lense. The theory was that a lense
focuses light, so why can it not focus a blast wave.(?) So therefor the scientists constructed a lense
made out of explosives. The lense of explosives could precisely compress a solid sphere of

What was the Manhattan Project and what impact did it have on the world?
Japan was affected the most by the Manhattan Project with the killing of many Japanese. Some
people agree, but some people disagree and state that the United States was affected the most. Who
was affected the most? The Manhattan Project was a secret problem barely anyone knew
about.Many of the scientists that were involved with the Manhattan Project heard about the Axis
powers gaining knowledge of how to make nuclear weapons that could destroy a whole nation.The
Manhattan Project produced two atomic bombs that were dropped on Japan.The atomic bombs were
dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.Hiroshima was chosen as the target for the first atomic bomb
because it was a large port city with an army base. The bomb dropped on Nagasaki missed its target
by over a mile. The U.S demanded Japan to give up the war or the U.S would end the war in mass
destruction.Japan refused to give up their fight in the war and that gave Truman the decision to use
the bombs. Japan had no idea of any new weapons that had been made by the U.S during WW2.
1945, the first of two atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima. On the 9th of August, the second

The government tried to do anything in their power to prove that nuclear war is survivable. The
public lived in fear of an outbreak of nuclear war and then the red scare began. This was a hunt to

Many scientists probably wondered if he or she could get the project finished in time and if his or

The secret plan to develop and build the world's first atomic bomb was named "The Manhattan
Project." It involved a process of trial and error that was ultimately successful in building an atomic
bomb and ending World War II instrumental to the ending of World War II. The Manhattan Project
was a covert name for a project to develop the world's newest and most dangerous weapon, the
atomic bomb. The Manhattan Project went through many phases including its development at the
suggestion of several prominent scientists, the building and testing of the bomb, and finally the use
of the bomb to end the war. If the Americans had not developed the atomic bomb first, the war
might have ended with Germany as the victor. Many scientists were involved with the project and
many of them were more curious about the science and the power of the bomb than winning the war.
Harsh security measures were taken to keep The Manhattan Project classified. It took several years
to build and test the bomb to get it functioning properly. In the late 1930s, the world began to panic
due to the fear of Germany discovering how to develop the atomic bomb. Scientists Albert Einstein
and Enrico Fermi, who both escaped from another country and became residents of the United
States, agreed that they should inform the president of the catastrophic events that would take place

The Pros And Cons Of The Manhattan Project
Throughout the Roosevelt administration and later through the Truman administration, it became
clear that both had the distinct focus of ending World War II at the earliest possible time. This is a

countries had put moderate effort into researching atomic power and how it could affect the war, the
United States was the only country capable of putting full effort into researching and creating an

Roosevelt assigned a lofty and difficult project to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. This project
soon became known as "the Manhattan Project" due to the engineer district that was formed to
design and build this bomb being originally headquartered in New York. The Manhattan Project was
established at a time in the war when the United States was uncertain of its outcome. After the first
successful, self–sustaining nuclear chain reaction took place in a squash court at the University of
Chicago, the idea of an atomic bomb became more feasible. However, while the idea became more
feasible, the transition from experimental knowledge to designing an actual bomb was a huge step
that involved many uncertainties and troubles. Although the Manhattan Project was formed during a
period of uncertainty, the government had high hopes of the newly formed project, but despite these
high hopes, the Manhattan Project faced seemingly insurmountable obstacles as it moved from
experimental knowledge to designing the bomb, the most prominent being the design for the new
technology and the role the bomb would play in the realm of global diplomacy.
As the engineers and scientists of the Manhattan Project began further research on the creation of
the atomic bomb, they quickly ran into one of their first major problems. Making nuclear fuel to

Planning Measures:
This project began 17 September 1942, Col. Leslie Richard Groves was an experienced manager
that over sought the Collosal Construction of the Pentagon. Groves started the project 18 September,
with the ordering of 1250 tons of high quality Belgian Congo uranium, the next he purchased 5200
acres of land. Groves was promoted to Brigadier General, even though he wasn't liked by many of
the scientist, he was a genius with MED. He took the fissile out of the scientist hands completely
and moved the management to the industrial corporations. Groves ordered the construction on the
fissile material production plants, even though there have not been any plans made up. On 16
November, Groves asked Dr. Robert Oppenheimer to head Project Y, the laboratory for weapons
physic design in Los Alamos New Mexico.
Just 17 days later Oppenheimer and Fermi's group that a critical configuration was made with 36.6
metric tons of uranium oxide, 350 metric tons of graphite and 5.6 of metal uranium metal. This was
able to create a Thermal output of 0.5 watts. During the remainder of 1943 plutonium production
facilities were created, as well an graphite reactor.

They did this so they could talk back and forth about "The Gadget" but anyone that wanted to listen
in or try and spy would not know what the people were talking about therefore not be able to relay

On July of 1945, J Robert Oppenheimer tests the first bomb at Trinity State, near Alamogordo, New
Mexico. All the scientists readied themselves to watch the detonation of this atomic bomb which
stood on top of a tower. Once exploded, there was a blinding flash which could be seen from 200
miles away. It also grew up to 40,000 feet and damaged some of the homes near it that were 100
miles away. After this explosion President Truman, all the way from Postdam, Germany, declares
