The Oikos
The oikos – 'lit. household' is described by the Nomos Glossary as a word "used to describe people
or family, property or a building, or all three together...the concept seems to play an important tole
not only in family but in citizenship laws". Therefore the extent to which Athenian legislation
interfered with the Athenian oikos, that is, how much power did the public sphere wield in the
private, is of interest to students and scholars alike, particularly as the word oikos was not used as a
specific legal term in any of the legal documents that have survived from classical Athens to the
present day. This is further complicated by the way in which the word oikos later came to be
understood simply as 'family', rather than 'household', and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

His actions would have rendered him atimos – 'disenfranchised' and would therefore disqualify him
from speaking in the assembly. In my opinon this case is merely a political smere campaign by
which Aeschines is successfully able to discredit his political enemies. However it is the success of
this case, which ended in Timarchos being stripped of his citizens rights and removed from public
life, that is of interest to us. This case is a clear example of the way in which personal indiscretion
could affect the way you were perceived by others on a public level but also how it was very much
in the interest of the polis to investigate and interfere with the personal lives of its statesmen. Such
were Athenian fears about personal integrity. It is important to remember that the court's issue lies
not with the homosexual acts themselves but rather with how Athenian social customs found being a
citizen conflicted with selling yourself for sexual favours. It was held that since they had sold their
own body for the satisfaction of another, they would not hesitate to flog the interests of the
community as a whole (Dover 1978: 20). Furthermore the slave in question, Pittalokos, was a public
slave. Some slaves, such as Pittalokos, belonged not to individual masters but to the state

Hesiod And Demosthens Analysis
The first document analyzed had numerous authors with similar backgrounds and motives. These
authors were Hesiod, Strabo, Antiphon, Demosthenes and Aristotle. All of which were renowned
professionals in their respective domains. Hesiod is known to be one of the Greek poets and is
widely regarded for his work on the Theogony. Strabo is noted Greek historian/geographer whose
legacy revolves around his work on the Geographica. Antiphon he was a recognized orator of
Athens who often performed speeches for the public. The remaining two authors, Demosthenes was
a Greek general who helped the Athenian state in the Peloponnesian War. The remaining author,
Aristotle, is perhaps one of the most recognizable names in history. He was a philosopher and ...

The contradictions in the document begin to arise following the third paragraph discussing the rights
of a slave. Antiphon argues that after killing one of your own slaves, man becomes so scared "of the
ordinances of god" that he must "purify himself" so that he will "best avoid disaster" (1). Here
Antiphon essentially says that slaves were regarded on the same level as humans. However, in the
following two paragraphs, this is contradicted by both Demosthenes and Aristotle. Demosthenes
states that "the biggest difference" between a free man and a slave is that the latter is "made
responsible for all his misdeeds" whilst "corporal punishment" would rarely happen to free men (1).
Aristotle as well argues a slave is merely a "living possession" and is comparable to an "instrument
which takes precedence of all other instruments" (1). As you can see from above, The ideas of
Antiphon contradict the ideas of both Aristotle and Demosthenes, the initial arguing that slaves and
free people had equal rights whilst the latter argued that slaves are valueless. Be it as it may, the
views shed on slavery in this document are incredibly pertinent as it shows how a typical Greek
looked at slaves during that time and what an important role they had in

The Potential Of Persuasion By Phaedrus And Life Of...
Bui Ngo Thanh Truc (Tessa)
The Potential of Persuasion in Phaedrus and Life of Demosthenes
Persuasion is an essential skill for rhetoricians. Since all a rhetorician needs is not the truth but his
own opinion, persuasion is necessary to address the assembly. While persuasion could be used to
lead a city to making the right decisions and gaining glory, the power of persuasion could be also
abused or used by the wrong person. Demosthenes uses his rhetorical skills to push Athens away
from its course of destruction. He also advocates for policies which are beneficial to Athens.
Demades and the other orators were supportive of Athens becoming allies which was the wrong
course of action because it led to the destruction of Athens. Someone could misuse their skill of
persuasion due to lack of knowledge and morality. Good orators can also have flaws, like
Demosthenes and his susceptibility to bribery. The negative potential can be reduced if the
rhetoricians are philosophers and knowledgeable of ethics. Socrates and Phaedrus's discussion
shows how truth is relative to whoever is most persuasive. While Plutarch does not state any
solutions to reducing negative potential in rhetorical speeches, Plato's method for giving a
persuasive speech worthy of praise is by dialectic speech. Both Plato and Plutarch acknowledge the
power of rhetoric and persuasion to affect the course of events in both a positive and negative way
and recognize the problem that comes with it.

Slavery in Sparta vs. Slavery in Athens Essay
Slavery has been a major component of human civilization all throughout history. People turn to
slavery for many reasons, such as fear of different ethnicities and fear that these new foreign people
will take over land that is not theirs. The conditions under which slaves work and live varies greatly
by the time and location of which the slaves lived. Slaves play a major role in their society and
contribute greatly to their communities, often forming one of the largest masses of the population.
Though the accuracy of the information from primary sources may be tainted with exaggeration and
bias, it is easy to deduce from primary works the treatment of slaves and the working and living
conditions surrounding them. According to many sources, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Though there were rulers, Athenian government was held primarily in the hands of the people of the
citizens, thus making it a democratic system. This is beneficial to the Athenian slaves as it means
that the voters are not voting for an elite group, but rather the entire group as a whole.
Spartan government, in contrast, is oligarchical. People were most often brought into slavery as a
result of being conquered in battle, however some were brought in to battle through their familial
lineage. Upon being brought in to slavery, a Spartan slaves' main duty was to aid in battle. In Sparta,
the government and voting was held by select elites. These elites would most likely make decisions
for themselves, without considering the well–being of other citizens not wealthy enough to vote.
This would be undesirable for Spartan slaves and common people as their voices are not heard, and
they have no rights in their freedom to vote. In Athens, people became slaves through captivity on
occasion, but most commonly through blood line. For instance, if a slave gives birth, that child will
then, also, become a slave. William Westermann describes the ownership of slavery in Athens as
being owned by families and individuals, not by the city–state as a whole. People in Sparta on the
other hand became slaves primarily through being captured following battle. Spartan slaves, also
known as helots, were, in contrast to Athenian slaves, held captive by

Peter Wiggins In Ender's Game
Peter Wiggins in Ender's Game is seen by everyone as Ender's sweet, charming older brother who is
very skilled in school. However, around Valentine and Ender, Peter acts entirely different and is so
violent to them that he nearly attempts to kill Ender in the second chapter. Peter also does a
surprising job of manipulating Valentine because she is younger than him and he knows how to push
her to her limit. Valentine Wiggins is more compassionate to Peter than Ender because she doesn't
like how Peter treats Ender due to the fact that he is a daily reminder of Peter's personal failure to
get into battle school. Although Peter knows how to manipulate Valentine to get what he wants out
of her, Valentine has the ability to stand her ground against ... Show more content on

His philosophies included hating any tyrannical government and that it is better to kill one's self
than to let the enemy kill them. (Locke + Demosthenes Prezi, Thongrasmy) A psychopath is
someone who finds it impossible to have empathy or create a loving relationship with someone else,
but finds it easy to pretend that they are charming and loving. Because a psychopath can't have
empathy for another person, they never feel guilty. On the other hand, a sociopath is someone who
finds it easy to have empathy and guilt. Sociopaths can also form attachments to some people or
groups. Peter and Valentine use their roles as psychopath and sociopath to become "Locke and
Demosthenes" on the Internet in Ender's Game, a science fiction novel by Orson Scott Card. "Ender
did not see Peter as the beautiful ten–year–old boy that grown–ups saw... Ender looked at Peter only
to detect anger or boredom, the dangerous moods that always led to pain." (Card, 8) From this
quote, Peter Wiggins undoubtedly takes on the role of the psychopath over sociopath because Peter
appears charming to adults, when he really is aggressive to Peter and Valentine, which connects
directly to the definition of a psychopath. It was mentioned also in the definition that psychopaths
don't feel guilt because they can't empathize with the people they hurt. In Chapter Two,

probably because the theme represents three people in this book, Peter, Ender, and Valentine, which

Primary Sources Of Athenian Democracy
Democracy, the form of government in which there is a rule by the people, is said to have originated
and thrived in the classical period of Athens, from 500–350 B.C.. Democracy inherently gave all
that were considered citizens power to participate in politics in theory. That being said, it is highly

Demosthenes a speechwriter, demonstrates this in his speech The Oration Against Eubulides, which
was written for a man named Euxitheos. In the speech, Euxitheos was protecting himself from being
decertified from his deme after a politician named Eubulides accused him of not being a citizen of
the deme. According to the Constitution of Athens that is meant to be in practice, in order to be a
demeseman, the demesmen must vote if a candidate appears to be of age and if the candidate is
free–born (of parents that belonged to the deme) (Aristotle 42). If the man is decided to not be a free
man, he must appeal to gain his demeship. If he cannot prove his family's demeship, he is sold into
slavery (42). It can be demonstrated that Eubulides manipulated democratic institutions when
Demosthenes mentions that in Euxitheos' case, Eubulides gave people that would follow him two or
three ballots (Demosthenes 170). He proves this by stating, "although there were no more than thirty
voters, more that sixty ballots were counted" (170). With this evidence, it can be proven that voting
was heavily manipulated, and in this case to benefit the leader, Eubulides, who was not fond of
Euxitheos. The democratic institution of voting is therefore in place, yet, clearly, not being
respected, as the leader is manipulating it strictly for his

Tyranny was the primary form of power that was in place prior the democracy of the classical

The Bad Citizen In Classical Athens Analysis
The Bad Citizen in Classical Athens
Matthew R. Christ – Cambridge University Press – 2008
Review by Kenan Mazic The book, The Bad Citizen in Classical Athens, by Matthew R. Christ,
considers the manifestations of bad citizenship in Athens that had previously not been as closely
considered by other scholars. Scholars often have a romantic view that the citizens of classical
Athens aligned their interests with those of the state. Christ argues against the notion and he argues
that some citizens diverged from this view in pursuit of their own individual interests. The primary
examples brought forth by Christ are evasion of draft, cowardice on the battlefield, and evasion of
war tax and liturgy.
The book is structured with an intro in which Christ gives an overview of the topic of the book and
the main ideas that he discusses throughout the book. He structures his main ideas into four main
chapters in which he gives an overview of the ideas that he focuses on in the chapter. Each chapter
starts with an overview of the topic that is then broken down into further sections; usually between
five to nineteen sections that elaborate further on the main topic of each chapter. He ends the book
with his conclusion that provides an overview of the book and the topics discussed. The book
contains footnotes that elaborate on the cited sources throughout the passage, a bibliography, and an
index.
In chapter one, "The Self–Interested Citizen," Christ argues the important role that self–interest
played in democratic citizenship in Athens. He notes that few scholars deny the presence of self–
interest among Athenians in this chapter. Christ argues that Athenians were well aware of the tug of
self–interest on the individual. He continues to argue that the Athenians developed institutions and
civic ideology to persuade the individual to hold the needs of the populous over their own. Chris
elaborates that citizens of Athens developed two different relationship models between themselves
and their city. He conceptualized the relationship of individuals to the city both as a hierarchical
parent–child relationship and also as a more reciprocal relationship based on mutual self–interest. In
chapter one, he specifically uses tragic

Inconsistencies Between the Ender's Game Book and Movie
"The adults are the enemies, not the other armies. They do not tell us the truth." (Card 82) This

numerous other parts of the plot, fans found cut from the movie. Differences in plot included
character changes, added romance, and differences in setting. In character development, changes
comprise of personality changes, less group development time, and less dynamic changes in
characters. With use of detail, changes involve age discrepancies, lack of Ender's genius, and
liberties taken with setting appearance.
When compared, the plots of the movie and book Ender's Game differ greatly. Initially, ... Show

Written from the point of view of a ridiculously observant genius boy, the book Ender's Game left
little to the imagination. The movie, though, written in third person Primarily, the ages of the
children in the Battle School range from about ten to seventeen, when the book stated that the oldest
seemed about fourteen and the youngest–Bean– looked about four. In the book, the young ages of
the children showed how the government exploited children for their own means. Ender himself
looks ten, and in contrast to the six of the book, this seems to lessen his brilliance as a commander.
Additionally, Hollywood cuts Ender's combat philosophy out of the movie. During the entirety of
the film, the audience only saw a quote at the beginning of Ender's talking about loving his enemy.
Producers cut quotes about the orientation of the enemy's gate, pain as a part of a person, and the
roles of children. They take away nearly every bit of Ender's brilliance. The battle room also shows
how Hollywood took liberties with Ender's Game. Described in the book as a small, white, square
room, fans received quite a shock when the Battle Room made its first appearance in the movie as a

Manipulation And Ruthlessness In Ender's Game By Orson...
In Ender's Game, written by Orson Scott Card, manipulation and ruthlessness are common themes
in this novel. Peter is the big brother of Ender and Valentine and is gifted with sharp thinking and an
extreme lack of compassion. Being a ruthless character who is driven solely by power, Peter
eventually takes over the world and establishes himself as Hegemon, the leader of the world.
Manipulative by nature, Peter also uses other's weaknesses to his own advantage. Although he is
driven by evil motives, Peter's genius along with being ruthless and manipulative are the traits that

As Valentine puts it, Peter is "a husbandman of pain, planting it, nurturing it, devouring it greedily
when it was ripe."(89) However, taking out violence on a squirrel is still better than taking out
violence on a person. This change in nature can be largely attributed to Ender being away from
Peter, which allows Peter to feel like he is the best because there isn't "living proof that he wasn't
good enough." (17) As long as there is no one around that makes Peter feel inferior, he stays
relatively calm and clear–headed. However, being ruthless is a simple task that anyone can achieve
given the right mindset, manipulating others takes talent and skill. Furthermore, verbal manipulation
is one of Peter's greatest talents, as shown when he uses it many times in the story to obtain more
power. One way Peter manipulates others is by using their weaknesses against them. For example,
when Peter threatens to kill Ender, Valentine reveals that she has a secret letter that would be opened
in the event of her death saying, "Peter killed me, and if he hasn't already killed Andrew, he will
soon."(10) Peter has taken advantage of Valentine's weakness for Ender to gain more information
about some of Valentine's tricks, which could ruin his chances of gaining power. Peter also gains
more power through this manipulation because it causes Valentine and Ender to be afraid of him,
therefore giving him more control over their actions. As Valentine states

Plots In The Movie Adaptation Of Ender's Game
Destruction of Planets and Plots in the Movie Adaptation of Ender's Game
Movie adaptations are more frequent than ever before in today's society. Sometimes, they are held in
a higher respect than movies not based on books, especially by those who love books. When a
movie adaptation is watched by someone who read the book, the reader has major and specific plot
points in mind that need focus, and when those points are not hit, there seems to be an uproar among
the community. With Ender's Game, there were mixed reviews. Many disliked how some of the
magic seen in the book was lost in translation. Some didn't seem to like how characters were
presented or how certain things were brought up with no detail, or not brought up at all. In the
movie adaptation of Ender's Game, Orson Scott Card's original idea of Andrew "Ender" Wiggin, a
child genius, becoming a commander of an army in efforts to save the world remains, but with
Card's intense adventure and genius depth nearly obliterated from the motion picture, the movie
underwhelms with its inabilities to portray the interesting science fiction story in whole.
The movie adaptation of Ender's Game avoids portraying as much child violence as the novel.
Clearly addressed several times in the book, Ender worries about becoming a killer, like his brother
Peter, yet he continues to inflict pain as if he forgot about attempting to avoid the seemingly
inevitable: becoming malleable by surrounding influences. However, the movie plays Ender

Why Did Athens Grow As An Empire
After holding back the second Persian invasion during the Greco–Persian war, the Spartan king
Pausanias was disgraced, and Sparta withdrew from the war (Thuc.1.95). This allowed Athens to
gain leadership in the war, and several years later, establish themselves as leaders within the Delian
League (Holland 2005: 362). Throughout the age of the Pentecontaetia (period of fifty years), the
League continued its attacks on the Persians. It is during this period that Athens established itself as
an empire. As time wore on, the Athenian Empire became more and more powerful, and it is here
that they made their first blunder, setting themselves up for a disadvantage in the Peloponnesian
War: by extending its power and subjected most of her allies in the Delian ... Show more content on

Had Athens continued to earn money from the silver mines and trade, instead of collecting from
others and using the money purely for themselves, there is a possibility that they might not have
generated so much resentment. In 465 B.C, after a massive helot revolt occurred in Sparta, the city–
state summoned help from all her allies, Athens included. Upon the arrival of Athens, they were
rejected entry into Sparta, while every other army was allowed to remain. Taking great offence to
this, Athens nullified their Spartan alliance. Thucydides states that Sparta chose to reject Athens for
fear that they might betray them and aid the helots (Thuc.1.102). Further aggravating the situation,
when the helots were defeated and exiled from Sparta, Athens gave them refuge and placed them on
the Corinthian Gulf, in the city of Naupactus (Thuc. 1.103). This was a critical error on Athens' part.
Sparta was already angered and fearful of Athens when they decided to rebuild their long wall, and
giving refuge to the helots only further angered them. While the long walls were crucial in Pericles'
strategy, they proved to be just as detrimental as they were helpful. What occurred was that

Cato And Caesar Similarities
However, they were strikingly different in how they used their skills and lived their lives. Although
the lives of Cato and Caesar are similar in many respects, the biographies of Plutarch and Suetonius
reveal that personality and family background are the main causes for their differences.
Commonalities between Cato and Caesar abound in Suetonius and Plutarch's biographies. The most
apparent similarity is physical appearance and ability. Cato followed a sober mode of living and
trained hard to attain " a tough constitution and a body which was as strong as it was healthy" (P1).
In battle Cato was a "formidable fighter, who stood his ground resolutely and and confronted his
opponents with a ferocious expression " (P1). Caesar was also strong in body and battle. He was
"tall fair and well built," and he was "a most skillful swordsman and horseman, and showed
surprising powers of endurance" (s45,57). The enormous number of victories left by Caesar are
testimony to his skill as general and fighter. Similarity in strength is only one part of domestic life
Cato and Caesar had in common. Domestic life had similar elements for both Cato and Caesar. Both
men were married, had children, and enjoyed a large number of slaves at his command (plu. 21,).
Besides the basic home life, each man had a keen interest in oratory. In their times, they were
unrivaled with the use of words. Cato " developed his powers of speech, which he regarded almost
as a second body" (plu 1). He studied

"The adults are the enemies, not the other armies. They do not tell us the truth." (Card 82) This
quote captures the essence of one of the main points in the book Ender's Game– and yet it, like
numerous other key parts of the plot, fans found cut from the movie. The plot of the book and movie
Ender's Game differed in several key ways. Firstly, in the movie, Peter and Valentine's Locke and
Demosthenes never show up or seem to play a part. If the reader also reads the Shadow series, a
parallel series documenting Bean's story, Peter's Locke and Demosthenes personas become
important during Peter's bid to take over the world. But the movie never mentioned them except in
relation to Ender. Secondly, an element of romance between Ender and Petra boils below the surface
of the film, which never occurred in the book. Petra and Ender a relationship that stuck exclusively
to friendship. Lastly, the entire end sequence ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Firstly, Petra never breaks down during battle. She seems a perfect person in the books– perhaps a
way to make Petra seem "worthy" of Ender? Or maybe just the studio trying to make a strong
female character as an attempt at redemption, since they knew their movie would never pass the
Bechdel test? Secondly, the Dragon Army fights one battle in the movie. Only one. In the book, the
several battles and more training time gives Dragon time to develop their battle skills and come
together as an army, as well as showing Ender's capabilities as a leader. In the movie, however, the
teachers gave the army only one battle and what looked like less than a day to train. Lastly, in the
movie, Ender never finds out that he killed Bonzo or Stilson. When he learns this, it makes him
grow as an individual– he realizes both his capabilities and his weaknesses, and this that goes on to
rule his character. The differences in the character development feel quite overwhelming when
comparing the book and the

Analysis Of Orson Scott Card. The Nebula And Hugo Award...
In the realm of speculative fiction, no author has had as great an impact on my worldview as Orson
Scott Card. The Nebula and Hugo award winning Ender's Game might be the best science–fiction
novel I have ever read. The saga's central character, Andrew (Ender) Wiggin, is the pith of child
prodigies, for though his IQ is through the roof, his EQ, or emotional intelligence, is both
immeasurable and unmatched. This was duly noted by his second–in–command, Bean, who
outperformed Ender in every test the Battle School had to offer. For all of his intelligence though,
Bean could never understand why everyone loved Ender so much. Indeed, even the reader falls in
love with the infallibility of mankind's greatest hero, indestructible to all but himself. Nevertheless,
in spite of all the admirable characteristics of Andrew Wiggin, it is, ironically, one of the most
fallacious characters that should be hailed for his heroism. In regards to finding a more long term
solution to to preventing the annihilation of the human race, it is Peter Wiggin who is the true hero.
Let us look at the some of the obstacles he faced before he was given the title of Hegemon.
The other children of John Paul and Theresa Wiggin absolutely despised Peter, and for good reason.
Peter was a tyrant, ruling over Valentine and Andrew with an iron fist. They often did whatever
Peter wanted, fearing as to how he might react to rejection. With Ender, this was often found in their
Bugger game in which one must kill the

Irony In Ender's Game By Orson Scott Card
In the novel "Ender's Game" Orson Scott Card like to use irony. Irony is when the opposite of what
is expected happens. The first example of irony is when Valentine is on the nets and she is writing
under the name Demosthenes. The reason this is irony is because Valentine is a very loving and
comforting person. On the other hand, Demosthenes is harsh and writes radical political viewpoints.
Another ironic situation Card uses is Peter on the net writing under the name Locke. Peter is the
opposite from Locke. Peter is a violent person and nails animals to the ground and watches them
die. Locke, on the other hand, tries to spread the opposite message and fight for what is right and
would never support what Peter does. Finally, Ender kills almost

Anne Bradstreet Tone
It is not a secret that women in the seventeenth century were oppressed. Puritan society deemed
women to be useful mainly within the household. It was very uncommon for women to be respected
as authors or even be educated enough to do so. Anne Bradstreet's "The Prologue" was a
controversial work for a woman in Puritan society, as it challenged men to share the literary world
with women. Through heavy sarcasm and self–deprecation, Bradstreet defends women writers from
the criticism of men. The sarcastic tone of the poem starts right at the first stanza. The speaker
begins the poem by stating that she will not be writing about wars or kings. She finds that poets and
historians, or rather men, are better equipped to handle such topics than ... Show more content on

However, the self–deprecating tone she has been carrying is not yet put to rest. She writes, "Men can
do best, and Women know it well," which makes the poem a bit less scandalous, but to some may
seem to be thickly laced with sarcasm (37). She tells the readers that men were, by nature, given the
tools to succeed rather than women, yet still manages to demand that men acknowledge that women
are capable writers as well with "Yet grant some small acknowledgement of ours" (42). The
concluding stanza also attempts to earn women the right to play the same game as men, while also
trying not to make the men feel threatened. Bradstreet writes that the men can keep the bays of a
great poet, her speaker would rather have a wreath made out of typical cooking spices. This relates
back to the domestic duties women were expected to perform in Puritan society. She tries to make
her male readers more accepting with the final two line of the poem: "This mean and unrefined ore
of mine/Will make your glist'ring gold but more to shine" (47–8). Bradstreet argues that if women
were given the same respect in terms of writing as men, it wouldn't take from the male writers. In
fact, it would make the men seem even more talented than they already are when compared to
women

Rhetorical Analysis Of Demosthenes
Demosthenes, renowned Athenian orator and logographer, in his speech to the Athenian Assembly
entitled The Third Philippic, demands resolute action against Philip of Macedon's invasion.
Demosthenes supports his demand with specific examples and rhetorical questions, as well as
challenging Athenian patriotism and wisdom. He intends to vilify Philip and unify Athens in order to
instigate a response to the encroaching Macedonian armies. Demosthenes begins by challenging the
Athenian conviction to self–preservation. For example, he states "Formerly, men's minds were
animated with that which they now feel no longer, which conquered all the opulence of Persia,
maintained the freedom of Greece, and triumphed over the powers of sea and land: but now

Commentary On Ender's Game By Orson Scott Card
Ender's Game The Novel: Ender's Game, is a science fiction written by Orson Scott Card. The book
takes place in the distant future where a group of aliens labeled "Buggers" are at war with the human
race. Kids starting at the age of three, wear a monitor on their neck to determine if they are eligible
for battle school: training in space for military combat. Andrew Wiggin, nicknamed "Ender" is sent
to battle school but is unaware of the high hopes of the men pulling the strings have for him. As
Ender ascends through the ranks, he makes new friends, enemies, and mentors. The ending to the
book was an unexpected turn and you should consider reading. To relate to the book, Ender is a

When Ender moved to battle school, he felt sad and missed his family he later moved on and
continued his schooling. When I moved schools, I missed my friends and was a little sad thinking I
wouldn't see them again. Throughout this novel, there were some super amazing parts and my
favorite was the ending when the International Fleet confess to Ender they lied to him and he had
wiped out an entire species of aliens during a fake simulation that was actually a real battle. I
enjoyed this part the most specifically because it added a major twist to the story and how Ender
was always pushed to his limits to the point of breaking, prior to this he had learned that he had
accidentally killed two other boys that bullied him, the second wanting to kill him aboard the space
station in battle school. After learning this Ender was driven mad and was then moved to spaceship
command school (being the only one because it was a lie) at the age of 12 rather than the normal age
of 16. When he was told by a previous war legend by the name of

Ender Vs Valentine
Ender's Game Compare and Contrast Essay All of the following characters have a huge impact on
the book Ender's Game: Ender/Andrew, Valentine, Peter, and Bean. Ender is the main character who
is clever, sensitive, belligerent, and hegemonic. Whereas Valentine is clever sensitive, and
hegemonic. She is definitely not belligerent. Unlike Valentine, Bean, as well as Peter, can be very
belligerent, especially Peter. Although Bean is not very hegemonic. Peter is not the sensitive type, he
would much rather hide the love he has for Ender. Although these characters are extremely different,
they are still connected through their different emotions that impact each other's lives. Clever is one
trait that especially connects Valentine and Peter as siblings. ... Show more content on

Bean was not much of a leader, more of a follower. Still Bean was able to help his team win battles,
but in much other ways. Ender on the other hand lead the battle with the buggers. Although he was

Valentine is a completely different story. She had obtained her management skill through
Demosthenes. Valentine was able to say anything without others knowing she was only a child.

Icarus And Daedalus Determination
What Drives?
Determination was helpful in the characters in reaching their goal. It was what drove the characters
from Demosthenes and Icarus and Daedalus to achieve their goals in the face of daunting challenges
and seemingly insurmountable defeat. Determination was also the source of motivation, even
inspiration, one would need in order to accomplish something or keep on trying.
In the myth, Demosthenes by John Haaren, Demosthenes's determination toward accomplishing his
goal of becoming a lawyer was critical. One way determination was helpful in Demosthenes trying
to reach his goal was that he was able to overcome his oral difficulties. According to the text, it
states that "...to improve his voice he spoke with stones in his mouth, and to ... Show more content

One way determination plays into the outcome of both plays into the outcome of both texts is that
because of their determination (and the motivation with it), the characters were all able to
accomplish their goal in the end. In Icarus and Daedalus, both father and son were able to escape, as
stated in the text, "...quench the thirst of his captivity..." and in Demosthenes, Demosthenes was able
to become more than a lawyer at the end; in the text, it states that "He soon acquired great influence
in Athens and became one of the ten official orators." A second way determination plays into the
outcome of both texts in a similar way is that determination was what made the characters not give
up until the end. Without the determination they had, both Icarus and Daedalus and Demosthenes
would not have kept on persisting to push the limits that eventually made them succeed in fulfilling
their goal (Demosthenes did this by doing hard training, while Daedalus did this by building wings).
A third way determination plays into the outcome of both texts in a similar way is that determination
was what made each character dedicated, which makes the end happen. In both stories, the
determination of each character had an important role that led to the end of the story. In Icarus and
Daedalus, both characters' perseverance leads to them escaping but because of the small lack in
Icarus's (determination), he drowns,

The Importance Of Philip II To The Destruction Of Greece
Philip II ascended to the throne as the king of Macedon in what can be recognised as one of its most
difficult times, as his country was virtually on the brink of collapse. Despite these immediate
overwhelming odds, the future of the twenty–one year olds life as king would see him not only
revive his depleted state, but overcome constant battles with rival oppressive forces both within and
outside Macedon's borders. It was these crucial further actions executed by Philip that would see
him etch his name into history forever, and spark a complicated debate that is; is it fair to describe
Philip II as a foreign despot who wrought the destruction of Greek liberty? This paper will argue
that Philip was in fact a foreign despot, however did not seek the destruction of Greece herself, but
rather sought its unity while in a state of dismay. While technically Philip matches the description of
a foreign despot, that is a ruler of absolute power from another nation, it is apparent that he had no
intentions to destroy Greece, but rather unify it both through military and political standpoints, both
of which will be discussed and argued in this text. Youngest son of Amyntas III and successor of
Perdiccas III, Philip rose to the throne while ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

actions were taken, however, Greece's opinion was initially represented through the three Philippics,

Pericles The Politician By Plutarch
Plutarch – "Pericles the Politician" Plutarch was a well–known and respected historian, biographer,
and philosopher. He held a very high status in society. He taught philosophy in Rome for some time
and was granted high office by the royal family. When he returned to his native town in Greece, he
was appointed as the Priest of Apollo. He wrote many philosophical essays as well as biographies of
influential people during the times. This particular document was written by Plutarch as a
biographical text about Pericles' political influence in society during his time as a politician. He

Pericles shaped his campaigning around pleasing the masses. Thucydides' political strategy was to
get all of his supporters to sit together in the assembly. Unfortunately for him, there were not many
to support him against Pericles. Strategically, Pericles gave nearly all of the political power to the
people. This was the reason he was known as the 'first citizen of democratic Athens by the historian
Thucydides. Purposefully, he was constantly 'beautifying' Athens. As stated by Plutarch, Pericles
"constantly provided public pageants, banquets, and processions in the city, entertaining the people
like children with elegant pleasures." He made sure he kept the public happy. Along with elaborate
public displays, Pericles, expanded territories. According to Plutarch, "he dispatched 1,000 settlers
to the Chersonese, 500 to Naxos, 250 to Andros, 1,000 to Thrace to make their homes with the
Bisaltae, and others to the new colony named Thurii." This expansion allowed the city to rid itself of
'idlers' and 'agitators' and "raise the standards of the poorest classes". In addition to his great political
strategies, one of the main ways that Pericles gained the adornment of Athenians, and also the
greatest criticism from his adversaries was through the building of several temples and public
buildings. His enemies proposed in the Assembly that other Greeks should have been outraged that

Control In Ender's Game
When you were little did you ever say "he made me do it"? Well, no one can make you do anything.
They might influence you, but they can't make you do something. Examples in Ender's Game of
how you control yourself are how Ender goes against his values of violence, how Valentine is
Demosthenes , and how Ender was tricked by Graff. In Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game , Ender
being violent, Valentine being Demosthenes, and Ender being tricked, all show that despite the
outside world, the only person that can control you is yourself. An example of how only you can
control yourself in Ender's Game is how Ender goes against his values of being violent. Ender feels
as though being violent is a bad quality that anyone can have, but he displays this quality by killing
Stilson, breaking Bernard's arm and Ender saying that he never wanted to kill anybody. Ender says
that when he beat up Stilson he wasn't worried about how if he was hurt , but he wanted vengeance.
Stilson barely said anything to Ender and he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At first when Peter had told Valentine about his idea of Locke and Demosthenes she was a little
sceptical. She said she didn't want to do it , but she liked being in control. It was almost like a guilty
pleasure of Valentine's. She said out loud that she hated control even though she really liked it.
Another way that Valentine controlled herself to be Demosthenes was how she was "scared" of
Peter. Valentine always knew that Peter was too scared to hurt his own sister , but she made that an
excuse to herself so she could be Demosthenes. In the book it says "In spite of all of her misgivings,
Valentine was having fun being Demosthenes. Her column was now being carried on practically
every newsnet in the country." (229). Which proves how even at the end she didn't stop being this
"horrible person" she thinks she is. She is making herself continue the column and says that Peter is

The Life of Alexander Plutarch
In Life of Alexander, Plutarch employs extensive methods to depict Alexander as a man of both
great ambition and self–control, despite Alexander's degeneration of character by the end of his life.
In the modern world, the regression from just conqueror to unrestrained tyrant is completely
congruent with the contemporary concept of ambiguous morality. In the ancient world, however,
everything is expressed and understood in clear constructs; therefore, one's character cannot change
within a lifetime–it can only be revealed. The history of Alexander the Great is well–known, so
Plutarch has to address common knowledge and beliefs while persuading the audience to believe in
his portrayal of Alexander. Plutarch establishes Alexander as a great ruler whose out of character
actions are made sensible with reinterpretations of situations and are neutralized with stories proving
his positive traits. Through these methods, Plutarch successfully resolves the issue of Alexander's
conflicts in character and is able to create a convincible and consistent character. Plutarch's portrayal
of Alexander as a just king is challenged by the infamous destruction of Thebes. Alexander leading
his army to destroy Thebes and massacre its population is characteristic of a cruel tyrant, not a just
king. To resolve this, Plutarch describes Alexander as "wishing to give her still a chance to repent of
what she had done, he merely demanded the surrender of Phoenix and Prothytes and proclaimed an
amnesty

warrior kings who aspired to be Greek, yet ruled over a feudal society that was as multicultural as
any of its time. Good morning Miss Boeston and class. Today's seminar will conclusively prove to

He became well integrated into the politics and military of Greece, learning Greek political tactics
and military strategy. Philip, in effect, had learned to be a Greek general. He had also seen how
weak Greece was becoming with its painstakingly slow democratic system and the general disunity
that was becoming predominant after many years of internal quarreling. Also, his time in Thebes
gave him a greater understanding of the geography of Greece. He learned the strongholds, and the
weak cities of Greek society, and this would prove priceless in later expeditions. When his brother
died, he left his infant son, Amyntas as the heir to the throne. Philip was, therefore, made regent, and
had control of Macedon. He succeeded to the throne in 359 BC in the traditional Macedonian
custom –– a round of family assassinations. Macedon, at the time of Philip's ascension to the throne,
was not a very highly regarded northern state whose power depended upon a warrior aristocracy.
The kingship rested more on personal ascendancy then institutions. Philip disposed of the young
heir and immediately began implementing his plans to unite Macedon, and control the Greek world.
One of Philip's first and most notable achievements was the creation of the National Army. He had
learned the military tactics used in the Greek army and structured his army on the model of the
Theban phalanx. However, Philip only based his army on the Greek model. He made sure that the

A Great Mistake Of The Athenians
This was a great mistake of the Athenians, as Thucydides claims, 'most of them (Athenians) being
ignorant of its (Sicily) size and of the number of its inhabitants, Hellenic and barbarian, and of the
fact that they were undertaking a war not much inferior to that against the Peloponnesians'. So,
Athens undervalued Sicily and overvalued their (the Athenians) greatness. Nicias tried to warn
citizens about the wealth and strength of the Sicilian states – enemies they would have to challenge,
and insisted on a great preparation and investments in the expedition to make it possible. He also
added: 'Indeed, even if we leave Athens with a force not only equal to that of the enemy except in
the number of heavy infantry in the field, but even at all points superior to him, we shall still find it
difficult to conquer Sicily or save ourselves'.
The preparation for the expedition began and the departure to Sicily took place. It worth saying that
all Athenians were taking part in preparation, the government and citizens did their best. 'Indeed this
armament that first sailed out was by far the most costly and splendid Hellenic force that had ever
been sent out by a single city up to that time'.
Alcibiades, one of the generals of the expedition, had a lot of enemies in Athens, due to his luxury
life and desire to get as much fame as possible. So, before the departure of expedition his enemies
tried to do everything to implicate him in scandals and expose. All in all Alcibiades was

Myth Of Athenian Democracy
In the classical period, Athens paved the way for future forms of government and established one of
the earliest democracies. However, even though participation was made more accessible throughout
the varying social classes, the reality of Athenian democracy was that limitations put in place by
state and practice moulded the system into more of an accessible oligarchy than a rule by the people.
As progressive as Athenian democracy was to its contemporary systems of government, in some
ways, what was occurring in Athens was no more than an accessible oligarchy, and the groundwork
for this was laid in the practice and principles of democracy itself. After overthrowing the dynasty of
Pisistratus, Cleisthenes, a champion of the demos, set the stones for the first iteration of democracy
(Herodotus 5.69). Throughout Attica, representatives from each of the ten clans would lead for ...

In later versions of democracy, with a few exceptions, the only qualification someone needed in
order to participate was to be an Athenian citizen (Aristotle 42), and lower class citizens were given
the chance to cooperate alongside aristocrats (Demosthenes, 176), which wildly contrasted the
aristocratically run governments of surrounding poleis. However, with the presence of strong
personalities, political figures were able to take advantage of the mob tendencies so often found in
Athenian politics to lord over a false democracy or overcome political rivals (Thucydides 4.28). In

Ender And Valentine Compare And Contrast
A Mix of Both "Peter Wiggin is the most potent person in his life, except maybe his sister Valentine"
(121). A main idea that drives the plot of Ender's Game by Scott Orson Card is the connection of the
three siblings. There's Valentine who is empathetic and kind, Peter who is a violent sadistic person,
and then there's the middle of the spectrum, Ender. They all share a dominant characteristic: a high
level of intelligence that can act the other's role and all of them share the power of persuasion. This
makes Ender's siblings character foils for him in the novel. Each one are a contrast of his own
personality. They have some of the same traits, but the foil makes the other two have more of that
trait than Ender. Peter is extremely brutal, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It's something the two have always shared because of Peter being present in their lives. Valentine,
the person Ender could most relate to affected both Ender's personality and his love towards people.
It's stated that Valentine is the only person that Ender is sure loves him unconditionally. Ender
knows that Valentine has manipulated him twice but continues to let her. Card's theme of love
projects here, despite the fact that Graff used Valentine twice to get to Ender. "Valentine, who still
loved Ender no matter what happened" (247).Valentine acts as a beacon of hope through the many
simulations Ender goes through. He always thinks of her in difficult times. The emphasis on that
message is used to keep Ender from leaning towards insanity after all the exhaustion from fighting
battles. After all, Graff said that they, "...had to have a commander with so much empathy that he
would think like the buggers, understand them and anticipate them" (300). Ender's empathy works

Rackham manipulates Ender by saying beating the Buggers is his final test instead of saying this is

How Did Aristotle's View Of Slavery
This journal entry about slaves was written by Aristotle in 330 BCE. He is saying while he is the
masters to the slaves, he does not own them (like how parents Are in charge of you, but don't own
you). He compared them to animals on how they are easy to train, and once they are trained they
stay that way. "Some people are slaves by nature, others are masers by Nature", If your parents are
slaves, you will then become a slave, or the other way around. In current time if someone were to
think that they would be an awful person, but this was over a thousand years ago. His views on
slavery were not the best, but compared to some other people's opinions in his time, his weren't that
bad as he still sees them a human who own their own selves while others saw them as less than
people who didn't own anything. Now our views of this are very different, we believe that people
are people no matter who they are and they should be treated the same.

being a slave and being a free man, you will find that the biggest difference is that the body of a
slave is made responsible for all his misdeeds, whereas corporal punishment is the last penalty to
inflict on a free man." In that quote he is saying that there isn't a difference between a slave and a
freeman other that a slave does something wrong he will be physically punished, yet for a free man
that kind of punishment would be one of the last things that would happen to them. As for the more
reliable source between the two would probably be Demosthenes, he is the one with a less popular

The Oikos

  • 1. The Oikos The oikos – 'lit. household' is described by the Nomos Glossary as a word "used to describe people or family, property or a building, or all three together...the concept seems to play an important tole not only in family but in citizenship laws". Therefore the extent to which Athenian legislation interfered with the Athenian oikos, that is, how much power did the public sphere wield in the private, is of interest to students and scholars alike, particularly as the word oikos was not used as a specific legal term in any of the legal documents that have survived from classical Athens to the present day. This is further complicated by the way in which the word oikos later came to be understood simply as 'family', rather than 'household', and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His actions would have rendered him atimos – 'disenfranchised' and would therefore disqualify him from speaking in the assembly. In my opinon this case is merely a political smere campaign by which Aeschines is successfully able to discredit his political enemies. However it is the success of this case, which ended in Timarchos being stripped of his citizens rights and removed from public life, that is of interest to us. This case is a clear example of the way in which personal indiscretion could affect the way you were perceived by others on a public level but also how it was very much in the interest of the polis to investigate and interfere with the personal lives of its statesmen. Such were Athenian fears about personal integrity. It is important to remember that the court's issue lies not with the homosexual acts themselves but rather with how Athenian social customs found being a citizen conflicted with selling yourself for sexual favours. It was held that since they had sold their own body for the satisfaction of another, they would not hesitate to flog the interests of the community as a whole (Dover 1978: 20). Furthermore the slave in question, Pittalokos, was a public slave. Some slaves, such as Pittalokos, belonged not to individual masters but to the state (MacDowell: 83). By ... • 3. Hesiod And Demosthens Analysis The first document analyzed had numerous authors with similar backgrounds and motives. These authors were Hesiod, Strabo, Antiphon, Demosthenes and Aristotle. All of which were renowned professionals in their respective domains. Hesiod is known to be one of the Greek poets and is widely regarded for his work on the Theogony. Strabo is noted Greek historian/geographer whose legacy revolves around his work on the Geographica. Antiphon he was a recognized orator of Athens who often performed speeches for the public. The remaining two authors, Demosthenes was a Greek general who helped the Athenian state in the Peloponnesian War. The remaining author, Aristotle, is perhaps one of the most recognizable names in history. He was a philosopher and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The contradictions in the document begin to arise following the third paragraph discussing the rights of a slave. Antiphon argues that after killing one of your own slaves, man becomes so scared "of the ordinances of god" that he must "purify himself" so that he will "best avoid disaster" (1). Here Antiphon essentially says that slaves were regarded on the same level as humans. However, in the following two paragraphs, this is contradicted by both Demosthenes and Aristotle. Demosthenes states that "the biggest difference" between a free man and a slave is that the latter is "made responsible for all his misdeeds" whilst "corporal punishment" would rarely happen to free men (1). Aristotle as well argues a slave is merely a "living possession" and is comparable to an "instrument which takes precedence of all other instruments" (1). As you can see from above, The ideas of Antiphon contradict the ideas of both Aristotle and Demosthenes, the initial arguing that slaves and free people had equal rights whilst the latter argued that slaves are valueless. Be it as it may, the views shed on slavery in this document are incredibly pertinent as it shows how a typical Greek looked at slaves during that time and what an important role they had in ... Demosthenes: "Well the 3rd invasion never happened so, we can't say for sure that Ender prevented it, and saved the would from fatal loss and even death." Locke: "What? Now you're talking absolute nonsense. Ender Wiggins prevented the 3rd invasion. The Buggers were fully equipped to destroy earth, and every being on the face of it, proving fatality." • 7. The Potential Of Persuasion By Phaedrus And Life Of... Bui Ngo Thanh Truc (Tessa) The Potential of Persuasion in Phaedrus and Life of Demosthenes Persuasion is an essential skill for rhetoricians. Since all a rhetorician needs is not the truth but his own opinion, persuasion is necessary to address the assembly. While persuasion could be used to lead a city to making the right decisions and gaining glory, the power of persuasion could be also abused or used by the wrong person. Demosthenes uses his rhetorical skills to push Athens away from its course of destruction. He also advocates for policies which are beneficial to Athens. Demades and the other orators were supportive of Athens becoming allies which was the wrong course of action because it led to the destruction of Athens. Someone could misuse their skill of persuasion due to lack of knowledge and morality. Good orators can also have flaws, like Demosthenes and his susceptibility to bribery. The negative potential can be reduced if the rhetoricians are philosophers and knowledgeable of ethics. Socrates and Phaedrus's discussion shows how truth is relative to whoever is most persuasive. While Plutarch does not state any solutions to reducing negative potential in rhetorical speeches, Plato's method for giving a persuasive speech worthy of praise is by dialectic speech. Both Plato and Plutarch acknowledge the power of rhetoric and persuasion to affect the course of events in both a positive and negative way and recognize the problem that comes with it. First, persuasion ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Slavery in Sparta vs. Slavery in Athens Essay Slavery has been a major component of human civilization all throughout history. People turn to slavery for many reasons, such as fear of different ethnicities and fear that these new foreign people will take over land that is not theirs. The conditions under which slaves work and live varies greatly by the time and location of which the slaves lived. Slaves play a major role in their society and contribute greatly to their communities, often forming one of the largest masses of the population. Though the accuracy of the information from primary sources may be tainted with exaggeration and bias, it is easy to deduce from primary works the treatment of slaves and the working and living conditions surrounding them. According to many sources, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Though there were rulers, Athenian government was held primarily in the hands of the people of the citizens, thus making it a democratic system. This is beneficial to the Athenian slaves as it means that the voters are not voting for an elite group, but rather the entire group as a whole. Spartan government, in contrast, is oligarchical. People were most often brought into slavery as a result of being conquered in battle, however some were brought in to battle through their familial lineage. Upon being brought in to slavery, a Spartan slaves' main duty was to aid in battle. In Sparta, the government and voting was held by select elites. These elites would most likely make decisions for themselves, without considering the well–being of other citizens not wealthy enough to vote. This would be undesirable for Spartan slaves and common people as their voices are not heard, and they have no rights in their freedom to vote. In Athens, people became slaves through captivity on occasion, but most commonly through blood line. For instance, if a slave gives birth, that child will then, also, become a slave. William Westermann describes the ownership of slavery in Athens as being owned by families and individuals, not by the city–state as a whole. People in Sparta on the other hand became slaves primarily through being captured following battle. Spartan slaves, also known as helots, were, in contrast to Athenian slaves, held captive by ... • 13. Peter Wiggins In Ender's Game Peter Wiggins in Ender's Game is seen by everyone as Ender's sweet, charming older brother who is very skilled in school. However, around Valentine and Ender, Peter acts entirely different and is so violent to them that he nearly attempts to kill Ender in the second chapter. Peter also does a surprising job of manipulating Valentine because she is younger than him and he knows how to push her to her limit. Valentine Wiggins is more compassionate to Peter than Ender because she doesn't like how Peter treats Ender due to the fact that he is a daily reminder of Peter's personal failure to get into battle school. Although Peter knows how to manipulate Valentine to get what he wants out of her, Valentine has the ability to stand her ground against ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His philosophies included hating any tyrannical government and that it is better to kill one's self than to let the enemy kill them. (Locke + Demosthenes Prezi, Thongrasmy) A psychopath is someone who finds it impossible to have empathy or create a loving relationship with someone else, but finds it easy to pretend that they are charming and loving. Because a psychopath can't have empathy for another person, they never feel guilty. On the other hand, a sociopath is someone who finds it easy to have empathy and guilt. Sociopaths can also form attachments to some people or groups. Peter and Valentine use their roles as psychopath and sociopath to become "Locke and Demosthenes" on the Internet in Ender's Game, a science fiction novel by Orson Scott Card. "Ender did not see Peter as the beautiful ten–year–old boy that grown–ups saw... Ender looked at Peter only to detect anger or boredom, the dangerous moods that always led to pain." (Card, 8) From this quote, Peter Wiggins undoubtedly takes on the role of the psychopath over sociopath because Peter appears charming to adults, when he really is aggressive to Peter and Valentine, which connects directly to the definition of a psychopath. It was mentioned also in the definition that psychopaths don't feel guilt because they can't empathize with the people they hurt. In Chapter Two, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The best you can do is choose to fill the roles given you by good people, by people who love you."–Pg. 241 2. This quote is similar to October Sky's quote in one way, the main theme is not within this quote. The reason for this is probably because the theme represents three people in this book, Peter, Ender, and Valentine, which we will discuss later. The quote above is important because Valentine talks to ender about life itself, and how everyone uses each other. She also pitches the idea that it would be better to be used by your loved ones and those who care about you, rather than those who don't. What Valentine says to Ender is one–hundred ... • 17. Primary Sources Of Athenian Democracy Democracy, the form of government in which there is a rule by the people, is said to have originated and thrived in the classical period of Athens, from 500–350 B.C.. Democracy inherently gave all that were considered citizens power to participate in politics in theory. That being said, it is highly debated as to how much power the people, also known as the demos, exercised in this democracy. Many practices and informal institutions can be said to have limited the power of the demos. Such primary sources that demonstrate this include Herodotus' ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Demosthenes a speechwriter, demonstrates this in his speech The Oration Against Eubulides, which was written for a man named Euxitheos. In the speech, Euxitheos was protecting himself from being decertified from his deme after a politician named Eubulides accused him of not being a citizen of the deme. According to the Constitution of Athens that is meant to be in practice, in order to be a demeseman, the demesmen must vote if a candidate appears to be of age and if the candidate is free–born (of parents that belonged to the deme) (Aristotle 42). If the man is decided to not be a free man, he must appeal to gain his demeship. If he cannot prove his family's demeship, he is sold into slavery (42). It can be demonstrated that Eubulides manipulated democratic institutions when Demosthenes mentions that in Euxitheos' case, Eubulides gave people that would follow him two or three ballots (Demosthenes 170). He proves this by stating, "although there were no more than thirty voters, more that sixty ballots were counted" (170). With this evidence, it can be proven that voting was heavily manipulated, and in this case to benefit the leader, Eubulides, who was not fond of Euxitheos. The democratic institution of voting is therefore in place, yet, clearly, not being respected, as the leader is manipulating it strictly for his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Tyranny was the primary form of power that was in place prior the democracy of the classical period. In Herotodus' History 1.59–63, Herotodus goes in depth on the tyrant Peisistratos, who assumed power as tyrant three times over the course of 360–340 B.C. (Herotodus 2). On his third attempt, he rallied support from partisans of the capital of Marathon and other country districts "who loved tyranny better than freedom" (Herotodus 1.62). Eventually, the tyranny began to become harsh on the Athenians through Pisistratus' son Hippias (5.62), the tyranny was in turn overthrow , after a 36–year dynasty of the Pisistratid family ruling over the ... • 23. The Bad Citizen In Classical Athens Analysis The Bad Citizen in Classical Athens Matthew R. Christ – Cambridge University Press – 2008 Review by Kenan Mazic The book, The Bad Citizen in Classical Athens, by Matthew R. Christ, considers the manifestations of bad citizenship in Athens that had previously not been as closely considered by other scholars. Scholars often have a romantic view that the citizens of classical Athens aligned their interests with those of the state. Christ argues against the notion and he argues that some citizens diverged from this view in pursuit of their own individual interests. The primary examples brought forth by Christ are evasion of draft, cowardice on the battlefield, and evasion of war tax and liturgy. The book is structured with an intro in which Christ gives an overview of the topic of the book and the main ideas that he discusses throughout the book. He structures his main ideas into four main chapters in which he gives an overview of the ideas that he focuses on in the chapter. Each chapter starts with an overview of the topic that is then broken down into further sections; usually between five to nineteen sections that elaborate further on the main topic of each chapter. He ends the book with his conclusion that provides an overview of the book and the topics discussed. The book contains footnotes that elaborate on the cited sources throughout the passage, a bibliography, and an index. In chapter one, "The Self–Interested Citizen," Christ argues the important role that self–interest played in democratic citizenship in Athens. He notes that few scholars deny the presence of self– interest among Athenians in this chapter. Christ argues that Athenians were well aware of the tug of self–interest on the individual. He continues to argue that the Athenians developed institutions and civic ideology to persuade the individual to hold the needs of the populous over their own. Chris elaborates that citizens of Athens developed two different relationship models between themselves and their city. He conceptualized the relationship of individuals to the city both as a hierarchical parent–child relationship and also as a more reciprocal relationship based on mutual self–interest. In chapter one, he specifically uses tragic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 25. Ender's Game Movie Vs Book Essay Inconsistencies Between the Ender's Game Book and Movie "The adults are the enemies, not the other armies. They do not tell us the truth." (Card 82) This quote captures the essence of one of the main points in the book Ender's Game– and yet it, like numerous other parts of the plot, fans found cut from the movie. Differences in plot included character changes, added romance, and differences in setting. In character development, changes comprise of personality changes, less group development time, and less dynamic changes in characters. With use of detail, changes involve age discrepancies, lack of Ender's genius, and liberties taken with setting appearance. When compared, the plots of the movie and book Ender's Game differ greatly. Initially, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Written from the point of view of a ridiculously observant genius boy, the book Ender's Game left little to the imagination. The movie, though, written in third person Primarily, the ages of the children in the Battle School range from about ten to seventeen, when the book stated that the oldest seemed about fourteen and the youngest–Bean– looked about four. In the book, the young ages of the children showed how the government exploited children for their own means. Ender himself looks ten, and in contrast to the six of the book, this seems to lessen his brilliance as a commander. Additionally, Hollywood cuts Ender's combat philosophy out of the movie. During the entirety of the film, the audience only saw a quote at the beginning of Ender's talking about loving his enemy. Producers cut quotes about the orientation of the enemy's gate, pain as a part of a person, and the roles of children. They take away nearly every bit of Ender's brilliance. The battle room also shows how Hollywood took liberties with Ender's Game. • 27. Manipulation And Ruthlessness In Ender's Game By Orson... In Ender's Game, written by Orson Scott Card, manipulation and ruthlessness are common themes in this novel. Peter is the big brother of Ender and Valentine and is gifted with sharp thinking and an extreme lack of compassion. Being a ruthless character who is driven solely by power, Peter eventually takes over the world and establishes himself as Hegemon, the leader of the world. Manipulative by nature, Peter also uses other's weaknesses to his own advantage. As Valentine puts it, Peter is "a husbandman of pain, planting it, nurturing it, devouring it greedily when it was ripe."(89) However, taking out violence on a squirrel is still better than taking out violence on a person. This change in nature can be largely attributed to Ender being away from Peter, which allows Peter to feel like he is the best because there isn't "living proof that he wasn't good enough." (17) As long as there is no one around that makes Peter feel inferior, he stays relatively calm and clear–headed. However, being ruthless is a simple task that anyone can achieve given the right mindset, manipulating others takes talent and skill. Furthermore, verbal manipulation is one of Peter's greatest talents, as shown when he uses it many times in the story to obtain more power. One way Peter manipulates others is by using their weaknesses against them. For example, when Peter threatens to kill Ender, Valentine reveals that she has a secret letter that would be opened in the event of her death saying, "Peter killed me, and if he hasn't already killed Andrew, he will soon."(10) Peter has taken advantage of Valentine's weakness for Ender to gain more information about some of Valentine's tricks, which could ruin his chances of gaining power. Peter also gains more power through this manipulation because it causes Valentine and Ender to be afraid of him, therefore giving him more control over their actions. As Valentine states ... • 29. Plots In The Movie Adaptation Of Ender's Game Destruction of Planets and Plots in the Movie Adaptation of Ender's Game Movie adaptations are more frequent than ever before in today's society. Sometimes, they are held in a higher respect than movies not based on books, especially by those who love books. When a movie adaptation is watched by someone who read the book, the reader has major and specific plot points in mind that need focus, and when those points are not hit, there seems to be an uproar among the community. With Ender's Game, there were mixed reviews. Many disliked how some of the magic seen in the book was lost in translation. Some didn't seem to like how characters were presented or how certain things were brought up with no detail, or not brought up at all. In the movie adaptation of Ender's Game, Orson Scott Card's original idea of Andrew "Ender" Wiggin, a child genius, becoming a commander of an army in efforts to save the world remains, but with Card's intense adventure and genius depth nearly obliterated from the motion picture, the movie underwhelms with its inabilities to portray the interesting science fiction story in whole. The movie adaptation of Ender's Game avoids portraying as much child violence as the novel. Clearly addressed several times in the book, Ender worries about becoming a killer, like his brother Peter, yet he continues to inflict pain as if he forgot about attempting to avoid the seemingly inevitable: becoming malleable by surrounding influences. However, the movie plays Ender ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Why Did Athens Grow As An Empire After holding back the second Persian invasion during the Greco–Persian war, the Spartan king Pausanias was disgraced, and Sparta withdrew from the war (Thuc.1.95). This allowed Athens to gain leadership in the war, and several years later, establish themselves as leaders within the Delian League (Holland 2005: 362). Throughout the age of the Pentecontaetia (period of fifty years), the League continued its attacks on the Persians. It is during this period that Athens established itself as an empire. As time wore on, the Athenian Empire became more and more powerful, and it is here that they made their first blunder, setting themselves up for a disadvantage in the Peloponnesian War: by extending its power and subjected most of her allies in the Delian ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Had Athens continued to earn money from the silver mines and trade, instead of collecting from others and using the money purely for themselves, there is a possibility that they might not have generated so much resentment. In 465 B.C, after a massive helot revolt occurred in Sparta, the city– state summoned help from all her allies, Athens included. Upon the arrival of Athens, they were rejected entry into Sparta, while every other army was allowed to remain. Taking great offence to this, Athens nullified their Spartan alliance. Thucydides states that Sparta chose to reject Athens for fear that they might betray them and aid the helots (Thuc.1.102). Further aggravating the situation, when the helots were defeated and exiled from Sparta, Athens gave them refuge and placed them on the Corinthian Gulf, in the city of Naupactus (Thuc. 1.103). This was a critical error on Athens' part. Sparta was already angered and fearful of Athens when they decided to rebuild their long wall, and giving refuge to the helots only further angered them. While the long walls were crucial in Pericles' strategy, they proved to be just as detrimental as they were helpful. What occurred was that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 37. Cato And Caesar Similarities However, they were strikingly different in how they used their skills and lived their lives. Although the lives of Cato and Caesar are similar in many respects, the biographies of Plutarch and Suetonius reveal that personality and family background are the main causes for their differences. Commonalities between Cato and Caesar abound in Suetonius and Plutarch's biographies. The most apparent similarity is physical appearance and ability. Cato followed a sober mode of living and trained hard to attain " a tough constitution and a body which was as strong as it was healthy" (P1). In battle Cato was a "formidable fighter, who stood his ground resolutely and and confronted his opponents with a ferocious expression " (P1). Caesar was also strong in body and battle. He was "tall fair and well built," and he was "a most skillful swordsman and horseman, and showed surprising powers of endurance" (s45,57). The enormous number of victories left by Caesar are testimony to his skill as general and fighter. Similarity in strength is only one part of domestic life Cato and Caesar had in common. Domestic life had similar elements for both Cato and Caesar. Both men were married, had children, and enjoyed a large number of slaves at his command (plu. 21,). Besides the basic home life, each man had a keen interest in oratory. In their times, they were unrivaled with the use of words. • 41. Analysis Of Orson Scott Card. The Nebula And Hugo Award... In the realm of speculative fiction, no author has had as great an impact on my worldview as Orson Scott Card. The Nebula and Hugo award winning Ender's Game might be the best science–fiction novel I have ever read. The saga's central character, Andrew (Ender) Wiggin, is the pith of child prodigies, for though his IQ is through the roof, his EQ, or emotional intelligence, is both immeasurable and unmatched. This was duly noted by his second–in–command, Bean, who outperformed Ender in every test the Battle School had to offer. For all of his intelligence though, Bean could never understand why everyone loved Ender so much. Indeed, even the reader falls in love with the infallibility of mankind's greatest hero, indestructible to all but himself. Nevertheless, in spite of all the admirable characteristics of Andrew Wiggin, it is, ironically, one of the most fallacious characters that should be hailed for his heroism. In regards to finding a more long term solution to to preventing the annihilation of the human race, it is Peter Wiggin who is the true hero. Let us look at the some of the obstacles he faced before he was given the title of Hegemon. The other children of John Paul and Theresa Wiggin absolutely despised Peter, and for good reason. • 45. Anne Bradstreet Tone It is not a secret that women in the seventeenth century were oppressed. Puritan society deemed women to be useful mainly within the household. It was very uncommon for women to be respected as authors or even be educated enough to do so. Anne Bradstreet's "The Prologue" was a controversial work for a woman in Puritan society, as it challenged men to share the literary world with women. Through heavy sarcasm and self–deprecation, Bradstreet defends women writers from the criticism of men. The sarcastic tone of the poem starts right at the first stanza. The speaker begins the poem by stating that she will not be writing about wars or kings. She finds that poets and historians, or rather men, are better equipped to handle such topics than ... She writes, "Men can do best, and Women know it well," which makes the poem a bit less scandalous, but to some may seem to be thickly laced with sarcasm (37). She tells the readers that men were, by nature, given the tools to succeed rather than women, yet still manages to demand that men acknowledge that women are capable writers as well with "Yet grant some small acknowledgement of ours" (42). The concluding stanza also attempts to earn women the right to play the same game as men, while also trying not to make the men feel threatened. Bradstreet writes that the men can keep the bays of a great poet, her speaker would rather have a wreath made out of typical cooking spices. This relates back to the domestic duties women were expected to perform in Puritan society. She tries to make her male readers more accepting with the final two line of the poem: "This mean and unrefined ore of mine/Will make your glist'ring gold but more to shine" (47–8). The Importance Of Philip II To The Destruction Of Greece Philip II ascended to the throne as the king of Macedon in what can be recognised as one of its most difficult times, as his country was virtually on the brink of collapse. Despite these immediate overwhelming odds, the future of the twenty–one year olds life as king would see him not only revive his depleted state, but overcome constant battles with rival oppressive forces both within and outside Macedon's borders. It was these crucial further actions executed by Philip that would see him etch his name into history forever, and spark a complicated debate that is; is it fair to describe Philip II as a foreign despot who wrought the destruction of Greek liberty? This paper will argue that Philip was in fact a foreign despot, however did not seek the destruction of Greece herself, but rather sought its unity while in a state of dismay. While technically Philip matches the description of a foreign despot, that is a ruler of absolute power from another nation, it is apparent that he had no intentions to destroy Greece, but rather unify it both through military and political standpoints, both of which will be discussed and argued in this text. In Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game , Ender being violent, Valentine being Demosthenes, and Ender being tricked, all show that despite the outside world, the only person that can control you is yourself. An example of how only you can control yourself in Ender's Game is how Ender goes against his values of being violent. Ender feels as though being violent is a bad quality that anyone can have, but he displays this quality by killing Stilson, breaking Bernard's arm and Ender saying that he never wanted to kill anybody. Ender says that when he beat up Stilson he wasn't worried about how if he was hurt , but he wanted vengeance. Stilson barely said anything to Ender and he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At first when Peter had told Valentine about his idea of Locke and Demosthenes she was a little sceptical. She said she didn't want to do it , but she liked being in control. It was almost like a guilty pleasure of Valentine's. She said out loud that she hated control even though she really liked it. Another way that Valentine controlled herself to be Demosthenes was how she was "scared" of Peter. Valentine always knew that Peter was too scared to hurt his own sister , but she made that an excuse to herself so she could be Demosthenes. In the book it says "In spite of all of her misgivings, Valentine was having fun being Demosthenes. Her column was now being carried on practically every newsnet in the country." (229). Which proves how even at the end she didn't stop being this "horrible person" she thinks she is. She is making herself continue the column and says that Peter is making ... • 61. The Life of Alexander Plutarch In Life of Alexander, Plutarch employs extensive methods to depict Alexander as a man of both great ambition and self–control, despite Alexander's degeneration of character by the end of his life. In the modern world, the regression from just conqueror to unrestrained tyrant is completely congruent with the contemporary concept of ambiguous morality. In the ancient world, however, everything is expressed and understood in clear constructs; therefore, one's character cannot change within a lifetime–it can only be revealed. The history of Alexander the Great is well–known, so Plutarch has to address common knowledge and beliefs while persuading the audience to believe in his portrayal of Alexander. Plutarch establishes Alexander as a great ruler whose out of character actions are made sensible with reinterpretations of situations and are neutralized with stories proving his positive traits. Through these methods, Plutarch successfully resolves the issue of Alexander's conflicts in character and is able to create a convincible and consistent character. Plutarch's portrayal of Alexander as a just king is challenged by the infamous destruction of Thebes. Alexander leading his army to destroy Thebes and massacre its population is characteristic of a cruel tyrant, not a just king. To resolve this, Plutarch describes Alexander as "wishing to give her still a chance to repent of what she had done, he merely demanded the surrender of Phoenix and Prothytes and proclaimed an amnesty ... • 63. Phillip II of Macedon Essay Phillip II of Macedon The year was 359 BC. Greece, though weary from constant internal struggling still had supreme power over the Hellenistic world. Persia, though it had suffered large setback in the Persian Wars more then a century before was still a menacing force. The Barbarian State of Macedon was led by warrior kings who aspired to be Greek, yet ruled over a feudal society that was as multicultural as any of its time. Good morning Miss Boeston and class. Today's seminar will conclusively prove to you the statement that "Philip II of Macedon was responsible for the rise to greatness of the Macedonian Empire in the Fourth Century BC" by examining several issues associated with Philip's rule. Macedon was a weak power, with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He became well integrated into the politics and military of Greece, learning Greek political tactics and military strategy. Philip, in effect, had learned to be a Greek general. He had also seen how weak Greece was becoming with its painstakingly slow democratic system and the general disunity that was becoming predominant after many years of internal quarreling. Also, his time in Thebes gave him a greater understanding of the geography of Greece. He learned the strongholds, and the weak cities of Greek society, and this would prove priceless in later expeditions. When his brother died, he left his infant son, Amyntas as the heir to the throne. Philip was, therefore, made regent, and had control of Macedon. He succeeded to the throne in 359 BC in the traditional Macedonian custom –– a round of family assassinations. Macedon, at the time of Philip's ascension to the throne, was not a very highly regarded northern state whose power depended upon a warrior aristocracy. The kingship rested more on personal ascendancy then institutions. Philip disposed of the young heir and immediately began implementing his plans to unite Macedon, and control the Greek world. One of Philip's first and most notable achievements was the creation of the National Army. He had learned the military tactics used in the Greek army and structured his army on the model of the Theban phalanx. However, Philip only based his army on the Greek model. He made sure that the Macedonian ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 65. A Great Mistake Of The Athenians This was a great mistake of the Athenians, as Thucydides claims, 'most of them (Athenians) being ignorant of its (Sicily) size and of the number of its inhabitants, Hellenic and barbarian, and of the fact that they were undertaking a war not much inferior to that against the Peloponnesians'. So, Athens undervalued Sicily and overvalued their (the Athenians) greatness. Nicias tried to warn citizens about the wealth and strength of the Sicilian states – enemies they would have to challenge, and insisted on a great preparation and investments in the expedition to make it possible. He also added: 'Indeed, even if we leave Athens with a force not only equal to that of the enemy except in the number of heavy infantry in the field, but even at all points superior to him, we shall still find it difficult to conquer Sicily or save ourselves'. The preparation for the expedition began and the departure to Sicily took place. It worth saying that all Athenians were taking part in preparation, the government and citizens did their best. 'Indeed this armament that first sailed out was by far the most costly and splendid Hellenic force that had ever been sent out by a single city up to that time'. Alcibiades, one of the generals of the expedition, had a lot of enemies in Athens, due to his luxury life and desire to get as much fame as possible. So, before the departure of expedition his enemies tried to do everything to implicate him in scandals and expose. All in all Alcibiades was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

But, Ender, you have to admit, you know me likewise yourself, Ender, I've been watching you for a long time, I know you have been the hero who saved humanity, and I have seen your video about The Last War with Buggers more than once, you destroyed all of the hive queens, hence, you would understand that we have the same temperament fluids in our blood. Now, I'm 77 years old, I have been ruled the earth nearly 60 years, it is time to tell my story to people. Ender, since you can speak for the buggers, surely you can speak for me. No one can understand more about the meaning behind my decision except you. • 69. Standing Portrait Of Demosthenes Forty–two years after the unprecedented and tragic death of Demosthenes in Poseidon's temple on the island of Calauria, the Athenians erected a bronze statue in his honor. The original however has been lost and the statue that we now is a later copy. The standing portrait of Demosthenes is a marble statue from the early Hellenistic period that is currently on display as part of the collection at the Ny Carlsberg Glyptothek museum in Copenhagen, Denmark. The statue is appropriately 2.02 m high, and is slightly larger than life–size. It is estimated that the original location of this portrait is Campania, where it was discovered in the 18th century. Like the original, this statue is a standing figure, and Demosthenes is shown with clasped hands. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 71. Myth Of Athenian Democracy In the classical period, Athens paved the way for future forms of government and established one of the earliest democracies. However, even though participation was made more accessible throughout the varying social classes, the reality of Athenian democracy was that limitations put in place by state and practice moulded the system into more of an accessible oligarchy than a rule by the people. As progressive as Athenian democracy was to its contemporary systems of government, in some ways, what was occurring in Athens was no more than an accessible oligarchy, and the groundwork for this was laid in the practice and principles of democracy itself. After overthrowing the dynasty of Pisistratus, Cleisthenes, a champion of the demos, set the stones for the first iteration of democracy (Herodotus 5.69). Throughout Attica, representatives from each of the ten clans would lead for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In later versions of democracy, with a few exceptions, the only qualification someone needed in order to participate was to be an Athenian citizen (Aristotle 42), and lower class citizens were given the chance to cooperate alongside aristocrats (Demosthenes, 176), which wildly contrasted the aristocratically run governments of surrounding poleis. However, with the presence of strong personalities, political figures were able to take advantage of the mob tendencies so often found in Athenian politics to lord over a false democracy or overcome political rivals (Thucydides 4.28). In the Athens Thucydides later presents in book two of his "History of the Peloponnesian War", the general Pericles manages, time and time again, to manipulate the Athenians with his speeches and maintain a steady ... • 73. Ender And Valentine Compare And Contrast A Mix of Both "Peter Wiggin is the most potent person in his life, except maybe his sister Valentine" (121). A main idea that drives the plot of Ender's Game by Scott Orson Card is the connection of the three siblings. There's Valentine who is empathetic and kind, Peter who is a violent sadistic person, and then there's the middle of the spectrum, Ender. They all share a dominant characteristic: a high level of intelligence that can act the other's role and all of them share the power of persuasion. This makes Ender's siblings character foils for him in the novel. Each one are a contrast of his own personality. They have some of the same traits, but the foil makes the other two have more of that trait than Ender. Peter is extremely brutal, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It's something the two have always shared because of Peter being present in their lives. Valentine, the person Ender could most relate to affected both Ender's personality and his love towards people. It's stated that Valentine is the only person that Ender is sure loves him unconditionally. Ender knows that Valentine has manipulated him twice but continues to let her. Card's theme of love projects here, despite the fact that Graff used Valentine twice to get to Ender. "Valentine, who still loved Ender no matter what happened" (247).Valentine acts as a beacon of hope through the many simulations Ender goes through. He always thinks of her in difficult times. The emphasis on that message is used to keep Ender from leaning towards insanity after all the exhaustion from fighting battles. After all, Graff said that they, "...had to have a commander with so much empathy that he would think like the buggers, understand them and anticipate them" (300). Ender's empathy works out in Graff's favor, but it's one of the main reasons Ender has a hard time coping with the Buggers' death and his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 75. Manipulation In Ender's Game A prominent theme in Ender's Game is manipulation. Manipulation is a prominent theme because Ender gets manipulated a lot, Ender manipulates people, Peter manipulates a lot of people , Colonel Graff manipulates a lot of people , and Ender's team gets manipulated a lot too. Ender is manipulated by Mazer Rackham in his final test, Ender manipulates Bonzo to fight him one on one, Peter manipulates the world and becomes the leader of the world, Colonel Graff manipulates the kids, and Valentine manipulates Ender. The whole book is basically based on manipulation. Mazer Rackham manipulates Ender by saying beating the Buggers is his final test instead of saying this is the fight against the Buggers. Mazer says,'' Congratulations, you beat them, and it's all over" (296). This is manipulation because Mazer used Ender to defeat the Buggers ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 77. How Did Aristotle's View Of Slavery This journal entry about slaves was written by Aristotle in 330 BCE. He is saying while he is the masters to the slaves, he does not own them (like how parents Are in charge of you, but don't own you). He compared them to animals on how they are easy to train, and once they are trained they stay that way. "Some people are slaves by nature, others are masers by Nature", If your parents are slaves, you will then become a slave, or the other way around. In current time if someone were to think that they would be an awful person, but this was over a thousand years ago. His views on slavery were not the best, but compared to some other people's opinions in his time, his weren't that bad as he still sees them a human who own their own selves while others saw them as less than people who didn't own anything. Now our views of this are very different, we believe that people are people no matter who they are and they should be treated the same. Aristotle's slave book entry was an ... In that quote he is saying that there isn't a difference between a slave and a freeman other that a slave does something wrong he will be physically punished, yet for a free man that kind of punishment would be one of the last things that would happen to them. As for the more reliable source between the two would probably be Demosthenes, he is the one with a less popular opinion.
