American Gangster Film Review by Steven Zaillian
A Film Review

Title: American Gangster
Genre: Gangster
Writer: Steven Zaillian
Director: Ridley Scott
Date and Place of performance: November 21, 2007 at my house
On November 21, 2007, I was home for break and watched an interesting–historical film titled American Gangster. The film was written by Steven
Zaillian and was directed by Ridley Scott. American Gangster was a gangster movie that reflected back on the pass. The performance environment
was at my house in the living room on a DVD player. The room was dark, cool, and very comfortable, which made it very relaxing and easier to
watch and study the film. American Gangster took place in Harlem, New Jersey, in the 1960's and 1970's. It was a movie that... Show more content on

The irony of it was Rickie Roberts. For example, when he had the chanced to have a lot of money he did not take it, he turned it in instead, and
everybody thought he was stupid for it, but really he was smart for turning in the money. I think this because the money would have brought evil
and trouble to his life and since he turned it in, I think he was the real wealthy person because in the end he to Frank Lucas, he passed his law
exam, and was able to become a defense attorney. The directing of this movie was great. I thought the story was told in a visually interesting way,
because it showed a lot of action and it was not just about gangsters it was also about learning how to survive in the streets. The special effects
were very effective, the way characters would get shot looked real, but most of all when they showed characters use the drugs and the way their
skin would look after wards. The director did a great job on the location and studio environment because the sound effects and picture was nice a
clear. I think American Gangster did not really show, Ridley Scott's, personal style of movies, because this movie was about someone's life and they
had to make it like Frank Lucas's life was back in those days. I thought the actor's performances were guided by the director effectively. The acting of
American Gangster was great. The stars of American Gangster were;

The Infamous Gangster: Al Capone
The Infamous Gangster: Al Capone The most infamously known mobster and gangster, Alphonse Capone better known as Al Capone or Scarface,
was born in poverty and worked his way up to get power. His mother, Teresina, immigrated from Italy to New York where Al Capone grew up poor. He
ended up quitting school and worked in a bowling alley. Al Capone grew up in a bad neighborhood and ended up being a gangster at the age of
eight–teen. He then made some choices based on what his gang leader told him. Al Capone had a leading role in the illegal activities occurring in
Chicago which gave a sense of a lawless city. He dominated organized crime in the Chicago area from 1925 until 1931. Prohibition led to the
bootlegging of liquor and the gang war's of the 1920s. Al Capone one of the world's most feared gangster started his life in poverty and ended up
making millions from the sell of illegal liquor, prostitution, gambling, and extortion. "But it was Capone's schooling, both inadequate and brutal at a
Catholic institution beset with violence that marred the impressionable young man (A&E Networks Television)." Al Capone did not receive the best
education and often looked at violence which he learned, thus bringing Al Capone to thinking about being a gangster. His mindset was in the gutter
which then led to a series of tragic events. At age fourteen, Al Capone, was expelled from the school for hitting a female teacher. He never came back
to the school the year after. Al Capone

America's Reluctance to Deal With Gangs and Gang Crime...
The United States of America faces a highly complex problem that is threatening to destroy the fabric of its unique urban society. This problem has
been developing for many years and has become entwined into the core of American society to such a point where it has virtually become accepted
as the norm to the millions of people whose quality of life has been greatly reduced by it. The problem in its most simple form is crime, however, this is
evident as a problem that demands improvement in nearly every country throughout the world, so this essay will look closely at the crime problem that
has become synonymous with modern day urban America – gang crime.

The modern settlement system of the United States of America has developed over the last 400 years from the early European pioneers initially based
on the east coast. The pioneers were the catalyst of the unparalleled emergence of small towns, some of which were eventually to grow into today's
metropolitan areas. As the frontier reached further into the western areas of America more settlements began to appear on the landscape, and so began
the process of urbanisation.
The first signs of gang activity were becoming apparent during the late 19th century as urban America began to develop into two widely contrasting
and disconnected societies. The two societies consisted of the poor and the affluent. Goldfield and Brownell (1979) indicate

Film Noir Vs. Gangster Film
The main difference between film noir and the gangster film lies in the disposition of the protagonist. The protagonist in film noir often is more
introverted and passive than the typical lead gangster. Additionally, it is typically the gangster who is causing conflict that moves the plot opposed to the
film noir lead who is often the victim to his situation. Another importance distinction between the two genres is the focus on the past vs. the present.
Film noir usually revolve around some past event. For example, in Double Indemnity, the film opens with a man confessing to murder, then the
narrative follows how he got to that point. This differs from gangster films in that gangster films often include lots of talk about the future;

Al Capone Research Paper Outline
Al Capone When we think of the mafia and gangs, one name comes to mind, Al Capone. Al Capone, also known as Scarface, was an infamous
mafia leader who was active in Chicago during the Prohibition era. Having committed numerous criminal deeds and being the man behind countless
murders, Capone was finally arrested for tax evasion . Now, you might ask, "How was he able to commit all these violent deeds without being
imprisoned?" Well, we first have to go to the beginning of Capone's life. Alphonse Capone was born on January 17, 1899 in Brooklyn, New York to
couples, Gabriele and Teresina Capone. two typical Italian immigrants who traveled to America to seek a better life. His family stayed in a poor

This threatened Torrio and Capone's business so they moved their business to Cicero. However, in 1924 an election for Cicero's mayor endangered
their business once again so the two came up with a plan to intimidate the citizens into voting for their candidate, even killing the competition's voters if
necessary. Although their plan worked, one of Capone's brothers, Frank was shot in the process.
After nearly being killed, Torrio retired to Italy as Capone took over his throne as Chicago's crime leader. Under Capone's reign, his bootlegging
business thrived. In order to take out the competition, Capone even ordered men to assassinate them. Feud between his gang and rivaling gangs
sparked many conflicts and murders. One of these mass murders was the infamous Saint Valentine's Day Massacre.
Al Capone had a multitude of rivaling gangs and their leaders who fought to control the title as Chicago's top crime boss. Capone had only one
competition, George "Bugs" Moran and his gang. In order to remove his opposition, Capone ordered his gunmen to raze Moran's business and his
associates. On February 14, 1929, Capone's men, disguised as police officers trespassed into a garage where Moran's business took place. Seven of

Gangster Films In The 1920s
The dawn of Prohibition engendered the societal normalities of the United States to be completely turned upside down. What had been a source of a
good time for so many was declared illegal and now millions of Americans were forced to seek alternative means of obtaining their alcohol, no matter
how unscrupulous the source. Enter the gangster, a larger than life, pinstripe wearing, gun wielding renegade. It was this romanticized idea that would
come to serve as an embodiment of society turning to the darker side. This idea would also take center stage on the silver screen with the emergence
(and later alteration) of the gangster film. The gangster film would be continuously popular into the 1930s, reflecting the sentiments of society as the ...

As Prohibition continued to drag on, the social acceptability of consuming bootlegged alcohol continued to grow alongside the increasing
popularity of gangster films. As mentioned before, bootleggers had come to represent social heroes in the eyes of the public and were therefore
portrayed this way in gangster films. Gangsters glamorous lifestyles began to become "glorified in the eyes of the public", which revelled in the
idea of breaking a law that they considered to be unjust. Gangsters weren't considered to be the "bad guy", but instead as symbols of the true desires
of the American people. By the late 1920s, films such as The Underworld, The Racket, and Tenderloin, though they were all silent, continued to
romanticize this idea of the gangster. However, it should also be noted that the true nature of gangster violence wasn't explicitly depicted on screen
until 1932, with the release of Scarface. Thus, audiences of the 1920s were detached from a more realistic idea of the gangster and the violence of his
acts. The 1930s, however, would yet again change the gangster film as the Great Depression and its social consequences set in. To begin with, the
United States during this time was a place of widespread loss and frustration. Many people felt let down by the government and financial institutions
and blamed them for their current situation.People wanted to escape their present condition and live life

Analysis Of The Film Noir/Gangster Genre
The category of film one chooses or can write is called a genre, they are identifiable types, categories, classifications or groups of films that contain
conventions (Dercksen, 2015), in other words, Film genre are the categories in which the film being taken into consideration fall into. In this paper, a
range of visual narratives and how they communicate effectively to a specific audience will be analyzed. These three visual narratives are; the horror
film genre, the Film Noir/ Gangster Genre as well as the genre Science Fiction.
Horror is defined as a representation for the need of suppressing uncomfortable and disturbing desires (Strinati, 2000). The horror film distinguishes
between what is normal and what is monstrous (Grant, 2007). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The characters are usually materialistic, street–smart and self–destructive (Dirks, 2018) this is expressed in the film Goodfellas (1990) which is based
off the portrayal of the life of Henry Hill, an FBI informant. In the Do you think I'm funny scene, the mobster who was loud and speaking the loudest
fell into the clichГ© character category as his behavior was self–destructive and boisterous. The gangster's success is typically followed by his failure
(Wilson, 2015). The gangster film provides a critical perspective on the American Dream that warns humans of the consequences associated with
consumerism and greed (Hoffman, 2014). This genre involves a lot of brutality (Hoffman, 2014) which in the scene of Goodfellas is exhibited
when a bottle was smashed on the head of a waiter who was speaking to the mobster. The film noir brings up a series of generic, stylistic or traits
from Hollywood films between a specific period of time, for example; the characters and stories (Femmes Fatales hiring private eyes). The Film noir
also includes urban settings (Naremore, n.d.) one of which is seen in the movie Goodfellas where the I'm funny how scene is shot in a busy restaurant
in an urban area. The Iconography of Film Noir can be found in the clothing of the characters which consist of suits and/or snap–brim hats which were
seen in the movie Goodfellas. The primary moods of film noir were melancholy, evil, guilt, desperation and paranoia (Dirks, 2018). Film noir films
showed the dark side of humans (Dirks, 2018) which is seen in the boisterous and drunk behaviors of the characters in the I'm funny how scene of
Goodfellas. The lighting in Film Noir films can be describes as expressionistic (Dirks, 2018) meaning that it was close to the lighting that would be
found in real life. The camera angles of these

Capone's Big Jim: Colosimo As A Bouncer
At about 20 years of age, Capone left New York for Chicago at the invitation of Johnny Torrio, who was imported by crime boss James "Big Jim"
Colosimo as an enforcer. Capone began in Chicago as a bouncer in a brothel, where he contracted syphilis. Timely use of Salvarsan probably could
have cured the infection, but he apparently never sought treatment.[15] In 1923, he purchased a small house at 7244 South Prairie Avenue in the Park
Manor neighborhood on the city's south side for US$5,500.[16] In the early years of the decade, Capone's name began appearing in newspaper sports
pages, where he was described as a boxing promoter.[17]
Chicago's location on Lake Michigan gave access to a vast inland territory, and it was well–served by railroads.

The Gangster Genre of Films Essays
'The Godfather' is the most revolutionary gangster film of all time, it rewrote the gangster genre in such a stylized way that all latter gangster films
have conformed to this genre but also evolved it as films have progressed.
Directed by Francis Ford Coppola 'The Godfather' re–invented the gangster genre elevating it to a Hollywood status and making it commercially
profitable. It looks into the life of the 'Corleone' family and represents America at that point in time. It portrays the violence and power, corruption and
justice, honour and obligation apparent at that time.

All "gangster movies" have been judged by the standards of this one, it has a very strong script that is well plotted, although at times difficult to
understand.
Two other gangster directors are Quentin Tarantino, famous for many films but 'Pulp Fiction' stands out, and Guy Ritchie, the writer of 'Lock, Stock
and Two Smoking Barrels .' and 'Snatch'. Both of these writers have been influenced by 'The Godfather', its stereotypes, plots and gangster families,
and although both writers have both influenced the genre in their separate ways, neither of them have made quite the impact that 'The Godfather' did.
However, 'Pulp Fiction' adopted a large cult status, it became increasingly popular and became a Hollywood blockbuster, it did in its own re–invent
the gangster genre regarding the association of humour and the subversion of the original 'Godfather' genre.
Tarantino made 'Pulp Fiction' in 1994 and it was regarded as innovative and different, he plays around with the timeline of the three inter–connecting
storylines that leaves you dazed and confused, but strangely satisfied. Tarantino manages this by introducing the protagonist of each story in the
previous story, either as a minor character or a stock character.
This gives you the impression that you have

Waiting Love Movie Analysis
If you're interested in a muscular Chinese guy roller skating around in a bikini, then I've got just the movie for you. Cafe. Waiting. Love. is a Chinese
love story filled with humor and grilled sausage. While watching this movie, I noticed many trends common among similar stories, such as the girl
who can see ghosts, the ghost who can't pass on to heaven because he has a regret, and the boy who likes the girl. Although these clichГ©s were not
mentioned in Foster's book, there were still many things I could deduce about the movie only after reading about Foster's methods. Of Thomas C.
Foster's twenty–seven chapters, in his book, "How To Read Literature Like A Professor," the chapters I found most applicable to my movie were
chapters nine, eleven, and fifteen. Firstly, chapter nine of Foster's book made one thing very clear: "It's never just the rain." (Foster, 70) Since rain
can be "more mysterious, murkier, more isolating than most other weather conditions" (Foster, 71), the director uses the rain to add a bit of mystery to
the mood of the joyful scene with this unnamed, mysterious boy whom the female protagonist (Xiying) is interested in (romantically). The rain also
serves as a plot device and force pushing Xiying and the boy together, even though it's clear that Xiying is going to end up with A–Tuo (the boy who
likes her). The purpose of pushing Xiying and the mystery boy together is to create enough of a connection between them for Xiying to choose the boy
over A–Tuo

The Popularity of Gangster Films in the Early Nineteen–Thirties The late 1920s in America was a particularly tumultuous period of time for the
country. The Wall Street Crash in 1929 had led to high levels of unemployment and dissatisfaction within the country. The Depression (1929
–1934),
which was a direct result of The Wall Street Crash, led to a breakdown of industry and commerce within the country and weakened its global position
as a superpower. People began to realise that the ideal which had been frequently promoted by governmental propaganda of The American Dream

During this period the rise of urban gang rule and mobsters was unprecedented, mainly emerging from minority immigrant groups (Jewish/Italian
/Irish). Initially the gangsters of the period were seen as high achievers as they were associated with the proletariat and seemed to be capable of rising
above there roots, even during hard times in America, and achieve wealth. When considering the socio–economic factors it is easy to understand why
such men were considered as "gangster–heroes"[3] who represented the people, however the only way that gangsters could achieve this wealth,
subsequently fulfilling the American Dream, was by stealing it. "Accruing capital meant accruing power over others"[4]. Therefore it could be argued
that the success gangsters exemplified was a perverse form of the American dream as it disregarded some of the key elements of the ideal. The fact that
at this stage in America gangsters were the only group within society who could make upward mobility believable, "tells much about how legitimate
institutions had failed – but that mobility was still at the core of what Americans held to be the American dream"[5].
In the early 1930's productions began within Hollywood of what were commonly described as "social problem pictures"[6], these films dealt
specifically with the social difficulties of the period such as unemployment/labour struggles ("Black

American Gangster Film Analysis
The film, American Gangster, directed and produced by Ridley Scott is a drama based on the biography of Frank Lucas. In the movie, Frank Lucas
constructs his own business of illegal work after his boss, Bumpy Johnson, passes away. Frank builds a heroin business, following in the footsteps of
Bumpy, and becomes the most powerful crime boss in Manhattan. Furthermore, because of Frank's immoral ways, he gets caught by the police and is
sentenced to 15 years in prison. As the movie progresses I form a couple assumptions of what could happen in the short term and long term. First
off, when Frank Lucas attains his heroin I believe that in the short term he will succeed. Frank has established a vast amount of insights into the
drug business from Bumpy, and from what he has learned he will take in and apply it to his situation. However, all immoral acts will have to be put
to an end, so in the long term, Frank's heroin business will be caught. If Frank's business is the biggest thing in Manhattan then the police are bound to
question where are all the illegal drugs coming from, how, why, and who. The police were already hunting him down so it was inevitable for him to
get out of his illegal mess.

because, in American Gangster, Frank Lucas didn't know that the police, Richard Robert's, was trying to uncover Frank's heroin business. Hamlet also

The Gangster Film
The Gangster film is a genre that tells a story that can be universally appreciated. Formed in America there is a grand appeal to their methods and
composition. Gangster film has a certain formula, where any country can use its intrinsic convections, but it's also adaptable enough to conform with
any particular country's context without losing its inherent meaning. In French cinema following the Second World War, for example, there was a
visible shift that had French films shadow Hollywood's approach. Director Jean–Pierre Melville was one of the pioneers of the French crime movie. In
1956 his appreciation of the American gangster and film noir led way to "Bob le Flambeur". A film very American in its characteristics, but still
withholds a French aura about it.
The American features in "Bob le Flambeur" are hard to miss. In its settings, with its noir–like, sulky lighting and urban ambiance, the film provides
meaning with the characters' surroundings. Most urban city settings in gangster films support a type of community that breeds gangsters. ... Show more

Even in clothing style they wear trench coats and fedoras, trademarks of the American gangster. The characters however similar to American

Born in New York City, in 1899, by parents Gabriel and Teresa Capone, Alphonse Capone was blessed with a historical blend of ruthless gangster in
his blood. Al Capone's parents immigrated to the United States in 1893, from Naples, Italy. Al Capone came from a huge family. He was the fourth
oldest of nine children. At birth, Capone's parents never would have believed that their son, Alphonse Capone, would grow up to be a murderous thug
without remorse. As a child, Al Capone was very wise when it came to living on the streets of New York. He had a clever and somewhat ingenious

The principal of the school rushed in and chastised the young Capone and for this very reason he would never return to school again.
After giving up on school, Al Capone took up odd jobs such as working as a pin setter at a bowling alley, and working behind the counter at a
candy store. Capone was definitely a night owl. He was a pool shark winning every eightball tournament held in Brooklyn. He also became an expert
knife fighter. Although the Bim Booms Gang was the first gang Capone ever entered, The Five Pointers quickly picked him up. The Five Pointers was
the most powerful gang in New York City. The gang was headed byJohnny Torrio, and was made up of over 1,500 thugs who specialized in burglary,
extortion, robbery, assault, and murder. While working as a strong enforcer under Torrio, Capone learned all the lethal tricks that would propel him
from rags to riches in no time at all. Capone was very grateful to Torrio and is quoted as saying: "I looked on Johnny as my adviser and father and the
party that made it possible for me to get my start."
In 1925, Capone became boss when Torrio, seriously wounded in an assassination attempt, surrendered control and retiring to Brooklyn. Capone had
built a fearsome reputation in the ruthless gang rivalries of the period, struggling to acquire and retain "racketeering rights" to several areas of Chicago.

From there, he began living a luxurious and public lifestyle, spending money lavishly, although always in cash to avoid a trail. Newspapers of the

The Gangster Film: The Godfather
The genre theory is used in the study of films to categorize and give a general idea of what the film will be like. There are several factors that
determine what genre a film will be in including but not limited to who the director is, the storyline, as well as audience expectation. As stated by
Goodykoontz and Jacobs "A genre is a type, or category, and genre films are usually easily recognizable as part of a certain genre. This is because
they tend to use familiar story formulas, character types, settings, and iconography (visual imagery with symbolic implications), all of which leads
viewers to have certain expectations about what the movie will be like before actually watching it" (2014). This essay will discuss the Gangster film
The Godfather. Gangster films are more like a subgenre of crime movies; however they can stand alone as a major category in film today. According
to Goodykoontz and Jacobs The Godfather "graphically depict the extreme violence that is routine in the world of organized crime, as well as various
other gang–related criminal activities, (2014) placing it directly in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When I think of a "star" I can think none other than, Marlon Brando. He is a chameleon of sorts. As stated by Alex Aagaard (.n.d.) "They are actors
who are capable of inhabiting any role by being a character rather than pretending to be one. This is achieved through the method of isolating personal
experiences, memories, and psychology and personifying it onto their role." Take his performance in The Godfather, a role critics considered the
greatest. He was the headmost example of the "method" style acting and became notorious for his "mumbling" intonation. Brando was cast as the head
of a crime family, a tad ruthless in nature, but kind at the same and doted on his family with a strict loyalty–based

St Valentine's Day Massacre Research Paper
Crime, murder, and gangs were taking a hold of Chicago and one defining moment shocked everyone. Two gangs, the Italian–Sicilian mob and the
Irish–Jewish crew, had high tensions leading to many confrontations. But the problems between the two seemed to stop after the St. Valentine's Day
Massacre on February 14, 1929. Then, the hunt for those responsible started. The crime itself involved many people, killed many people, and even had
effects after the crime. There were many well–known people of Chicago in the two groups and high tensions between gangs that would eventually lead
up to the St. Valentine's Day Massacre. The two gangs, the Italian–Sicilian mob and the Irish–Jewish crew, had many confrontations but one stood out.

Moran and his gang after the attack, had been able to hold their territory for some time, but never really came back from the massacre ("Feb." 2).
Moran's gang had also lost a lot of strength and power in Chicago in a short time (Benson, 1). One of the surviving victims, Frank Gusenberg, could
have put the case to rest, serving those responsible, but when asked who shot him, he said, "No one shot me", and the case was left unsolved when
Gusenberg later died from his wounds ("Saint" 1). The two leaders of the attack, were the ones with the strongest alibis. Al Capone and McGurn
were not charged for the crime and seemed to be free, but one gunman, Fred Burke, was arrested for the murder of a police officer and not for the
crime (Rosenberg, 3). Although Capone was not arrested for the crime, it did put him on the federal government's radar and they had him arrested in
1931 for tax evasion (Rosenberg, 4). McGurn did not fare well either. One day, after the seventh anniversary of the massacre, he was gunned down in
a bowling alley, ending his career (Rosenberg, 4). The massacre was however, the last time Capone and Moran interfered with each other. This was
because Bugs was arrested in 1946 for small time robberies and later died in jail from lung cancer. Furthermore, Capone was arrested in 1931
("Valentine's" 2). Even though many thought they knew who ordered the attack, there

Morality In The Film American Gangster
The founding principle of Abraham Maslow's Hierarchy of needs states that one must fulfil the lower level, basic needs before they are able to
progress up the pyramid and achieve the highest level, self–actualization. The lowest level, physiological needs, includes basic goods required for
survival, such as air, sleep, and food. While we believe that in the modern, developed world these needs are met, or even guaranteed, "Deliver"
proposes an alternative viewpoint, in which Lupe Fiasco narrates the harsh reality of the ghettos both he and other members of his race often spend their
entire life living in. He uses the metaphor of a somewhat simple "pizza man" refusing to deliver to his neighbourhood to illustrate the extent of the lack

The moral implications of the scene are great, as this execution style killing in broad daylight was not expected from a man who had just finished a
speech about "honesty, integrity, and hard work". According to Kohlberg, however, this seemingly immoral act falls in line with Frank's position on
the stages of moral development. Kohlberg's theory dictates six stages of moral development belonging to 3 broader stages, Pre Conventional,
Conventional, and Post Conventional. The Pre Conventional is commonly found in children, and is composed of individuals who base their morality
on outside threats, such as schoolchildren obeying teachers under threat of punishment. This includes 2 stages, individuals who only see the
consequences of their moral actions as well as those who view morality as what is best for them. Next, the conventional stage is where most
adolescents and adults remain for their whole lives. It includes two sub stages, morality determined by conforming to social consensus and morality
determined by realizing the importance obedience plays in maintaining social order. Finally, the post conventional stage is one that most people do not
progress to. It contains stages based on differing moral opinions based on contractual orientation, as well as morality based on abstract, categorical

By keeping Tony Montana in the center of the frame, the audience can remember him from the beginning of the film and understand how much has

to show how the American dream is for everyone. In addition to zooming and film cuts, De Palma also utilizes long takes to exemplify how the
American dream is for everyone. The average shot length, or the average of the length of all the shots in a film, in American film is approximately
three to four seconds long (Cinemetrics). In contrast, the average shot length in 'Scarface' is approximately six seconds long (Cinemetrics). Scenes
such as the execution of Frank, and the shootout in the motel are examples of shots that are much longer than the average shot length. De Palma
purposefully chooses to film long takes in 'Scarface'. By using long takes, De Palma can create scenes that stick in the audience's mind. When the
average shot length of a film is around two to three seconds then the audience does not have the time to form a solid memory of the scenes. In
contrast, when the average shot length of a film is longer, 6 or more seconds, then this allows the audience to remember many more individual scenes
in the film. A longer average shot length also shows that the focus of the film is the character arcs of the main and supporting characters. Films with

Al Capone's Role In Prohibition
Al Capone's Role In Prohibition
The 18th Amendment was ratified in 1919 making the production and sale of alcohol in the United States illegal, thus creating havoc in the United
States and skyrocketing criminal activity. Al Capone was a major contributor in crime during prohibition because of his methods of business which
included controlling speakeasies, killing competitors, and, leading in gang activity.
In 1921, Al Capone was age 22 and recruited by Johnny Torrio a bootlegger in Chicago. Torrio's business was established in 1920, after the passing
of the National Prohibition Act or informally known as the Volstead Act, which intent was to carry out the 18th Amendment. Capone's role in the
business was to persuade owners of speakeasies to purchase Torrio's alcohol. After just three years of being in the bootlegging business, Capone took
over Johnny Torrio's business and controlled 161 speakeasies. In 1929 it was estimated that Capone had accumulated over 60,000,000 dollars of the

One situation messed me up pretty bad. It was right after I joined the gang. I had to prove myself to everybody in the Outfit, and especially Al Capone

I was given a special task: to "persuade" a businessman named Carl to buy more of our alcohol so he could sell it in his bar. Everyone made it
seem like a simple enough task, so I did not worry too much. The man's neighborhood was deserted. No one in sight and no one in ear shot. This

thought of the fear in those people's minds; so much fear, they decided to hide away in their homes and practically lock their business doors; sent
chills up and down my entire being, especially because I have known that fear all too well. The roads were so deserted I could hear the sound of my
own heartbeat, which was racing unlike any other. When we finally arrived at our destination, my heart seemed to slow, as if the only thing worrying
me was the drive over.

The Gangster Film Industry In The 1930's
Throughout American history, film and filmmakers have turned to society for insight to new ideas on films. Huge movements and monumental points
in history, such as The Great Depression, race movements, women's rights and other points in time are often portrayed through creative films and

The gangster film genre is a subgenre of the crime film, dealing with organized crime and more often than not, the Mafia. Though gangster films have
their root in the silent era, the genre became widely popular in the 1930's Hollywood Studio era, which is characterized by the Hollywood Genre
System. Genre films offered economic advantages, including the repeated use of standardized themes, elements, characters and iconography.
Additionally, genre films were easily marketable, as audiences knew what to expect from each genre. If a viewer enjoyed one film from a particular

Gangster Films : The Most Complex Category Of Films
Introduction
Gangster films are the most complex category of films that mirror our views on the moral justice. Crime films centered on criminal activities such as
hoodlums, alcohol during prohibition, bank robbery, and petty theft. Admittedly, the criminal activities that featured in the gangster films got executed
against the laws, and they were carried out with no regard to the safety of human life. They evolve around gangsters who were motivated to seek power
and wealth.
The earliest gangster films in the United States can be traced back to the silent epoch of 1897–1927 when the country was experiencing the progressive
era (Kolker 67). The crime films during this period capitalized on the social conditions that were being encountered in the United States such as the
immigration and urbanization that resulted in increasing of organized crimes, distrust of the government and social anarchy. Apparently, the
proliferation of gangster activities and the social disorder led to the emergence of crime films. Importantly, the gangster films of the 1920s and late
1930s led to significant influence to the American cinema gangster mythology. These mythical gangster films were driven in a manner that could
reach their epitome where ironically, they got doomed. The characters of these films were described as both heroes and criminals depending on the
way the society viewed them. The gangster activities depicted in these early films were as a result of a failed United States economic

It is said that Americans are raised on certain values and all live and strive toward the American dream. Somewhere along the way, though, lines
were strewn and those values and morals became extinct by nature. Now with misinterpreted ideals and ideas of logical fallacies as our only
reference to the normal way of living, life is made to be more complicated and full of anxiety. In the short stories of "Stone Soup" by Barbara

The circumstances in which the modern world faces are more unique and diverse than ever before. Slavery has been abolished, women's rights have
been achieved, depressions have been conquered, wars have been fought, minorities are lawfully considered equal, and gay and other martial freedoms
are coming forth. The most logical circumstances have always been around and known to be true through nature. Humans are a social breed and strive
for a sole companion but, none–the–less, we are animals designed to survive and re–populate. Our increased life expectancy and uncontestable ability
to manifest our own happiness only provides more inconsistency when it comes to our families. We weren't meant to be together for years and
years, we were just meant to be together. Where the line is draw is left completely up to us as the individual. As Kingslover states, "If there is a

American Gangster Film Review: Ridley Scott's Crime Drama

  • 1. American Gangster Film Review by Steven Zaillian A Film Review November 27, 2007 Title: American Gangster Genre: Gangster Writer: Steven Zaillian Director: Ridley Scott Date and Place of performance: November 21, 2007 at my house On November 21, 2007, I was home for break and watched an interesting–historical film titled American Gangster. The film was written by Steven Zaillian and was directed by Ridley Scott. American Gangster was a gangster movie that reflected back on the pass. The performance environment was at my house in the living room on a DVD player. The room was dark, cool, and very comfortable, which made it very relaxing and easier to watch and study the film. American Gangster took place in Harlem, New Jersey, in the 1960's and 1970's. It was a movie that... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The irony of it was Rickie Roberts. For example, when he had the chanced to have a lot of money he did not take it, he turned it in instead, and everybody thought he was stupid for it, but really he was smart for turning in the money. I think this because the money would have brought evil and trouble to his life and since he turned it in, I think he was the real wealthy person because in the end he to Frank Lucas, he passed his law exam, and was able to become a defense attorney. The directing of this movie was great. I thought the story was told in a visually interesting way, because it showed a lot of action and it was not just about gangsters it was also about learning how to survive in the streets. The special effects were very effective, the way characters would get shot looked real, but most of all when they showed characters use the drugs and the way their skin would look after wards. The director did a great job on the location and studio environment because the sound effects and picture was nice a clear. I think American Gangster did not really show, Ridley Scott's, personal style of movies, because this movie was about someone's life and they had to make it like Frank Lucas's life was back in those days. I thought the actor's performances were guided by the director effectively. The acting of American Gangster was great. The stars of American Gangster were;

The Infamous Gangster: Al Capone The Infamous Gangster: Al Capone The most infamously known mobster and gangster, Alphonse Capone better known as Al Capone or Scarface, was born in poverty and worked his way up to get power. His mother, Teresina, immigrated from Italy to New York where Al Capone grew up poor. He ended up quitting school and worked in a bowling alley. Al Capone grew up in a bad neighborhood and ended up being a gangster at the age of eight–teen. He then made some choices based on what his gang leader told him. Al Capone had a leading role in the illegal activities occurring in Chicago which gave a sense of a lawless city. He dominated organized crime in the Chicago area from 1925 until 1931. Prohibition led to the bootlegging of liquor and the gang war's of the 1920s. Al Capone one of the world's most feared gangster started his life in poverty and ended up making millions from the sell of illegal liquor, prostitution, gambling, and extortion. "But it was Capone's schooling, both inadequate and brutal at a Catholic institution beset with violence that marred the impressionable young man (A&E Networks Television)." Al Capone did not receive the best education and often looked at violence which he learned, thus bringing Al Capone to thinking about being a gangster. His mindset was in the gutter which then led to a series of tragic events. At age fourteen, Al Capone, was expelled from the school for hitting a female teacher. He never came back to the school the year after. Al Capone ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. America's Reluctance to Deal With Gangs and Gang Crime... The United States of America faces a highly complex problem that is threatening to destroy the fabric of its unique urban society. This problem has been developing for many years and has become entwined into the core of American society to such a point where it has virtually become accepted as the norm to the millions of people whose quality of life has been greatly reduced by it. The problem in its most simple form is crime, however, this is evident as a problem that demands improvement in nearly every country throughout the world, so this essay will look closely at the crime problem that has become synonymous with modern day urban America – gang crime. The modern settlement system of the United States of America has developed over the last 400 years from the early European pioneers initially based on the east coast. The pioneers were the catalyst of the unparalleled emergence of small towns, some of which were eventually to grow into today's metropolitan areas. As the frontier reached further into the western areas of America more settlements began to appear on the landscape, and so began the process of urbanisation. The first signs of gang activity were becoming apparent during the late 19th century as urban America began to develop into two widely contrasting and disconnected societies. The two societies consisted of the poor and the affluent. Goldfield and Brownell (1979) indicate ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Film Noir Vs. Gangster Film The main difference between film noir and the gangster film lies in the disposition of the protagonist. The protagonist in film noir often is more introverted and passive than the typical lead gangster. Additionally, it is typically the gangster who is causing conflict that moves the plot opposed to the film noir lead who is often the victim to his situation. Another importance distinction between the two genres is the focus on the past vs. the present. Film noir usually revolve around some past event. For example, in Double Indemnity, the film opens with a man confessing to murder, then the narrative follows how he got to that point. This differs from gangster films in that gangster films often include lots of talk about the future; ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Having committed numerous criminal deeds and being the man behind countless murders, Capone was finally arrested for tax evasion . Now, you might ask, "How was he able to commit all these violent deeds without being imprisoned?" Well, we first have to go to the beginning of Capone's life. However, in 1924 an election for Cicero's mayor endangered their business once again so the two came up with a plan to intimidate the citizens into voting for their candidate, even killing the competition's voters if necessary. Although their plan worked, one of Capone's brothers, Frank was shot in the process. After nearly being killed, Torrio retired to Italy as Capone took over his throne as Chicago's crime leader. Under Capone's reign, his bootlegging business thrived. In order to take out the competition, Capone even ordered men to assassinate them. Feud between his gang and rivaling gangs sparked many conflicts and murders. One of these mass murders was the infamous Saint Valentine's Day Massacre. Al Capone had a multitude of rivaling gangs and their leaders who fought to control the title as Chicago's top crime boss. Capone had only one competition, George "Bugs" Moran and his gang. In order to remove his opposition, Capone ordered his gunmen to raze Moran's business and his associates. • 7. Gangster Films In The 1920s The dawn of Prohibition engendered the societal normalities of the United States to be completely turned upside down. What had been a source of a good time for so many was declared illegal and now millions of Americans were forced to seek alternative means of obtaining their alcohol, no matter how unscrupulous the source. Enter the gangster, a larger than life, pinstripe wearing, gun wielding renegade. It was this romanticized idea that would come to serve as an embodiment of society turning to the darker side. This idea would also take center stage on the silver screen with the emergence (and later alteration) of the gangster film. The gangster film would be continuously popular into the 1930s, reflecting the sentiments of society as the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As Prohibition continued to drag on, the social acceptability of consuming bootlegged alcohol continued to grow alongside the increasing popularity of gangster films. As mentioned before, bootleggers had come to represent social heroes in the eyes of the public and were therefore portrayed this way in gangster films. Gangsters glamorous lifestyles began to become "glorified in the eyes of the public", which revelled in the idea of breaking a law that they considered to be unjust. Gangsters weren't considered to be the "bad guy", but instead as symbols of the true desires of the American people. By the late 1920s, films such as The Underworld, The Racket, and Tenderloin, though they were all silent, continued to romanticize this idea of the gangster. However, it should also be noted that the true nature of gangster violence wasn't explicitly depicted on screen until 1932, with the release of Scarface. Thus, audiences of the 1920s were detached from a more realistic idea of the gangster and the violence of his acts. The 1930s, however, would yet again change the gangster film as the Great Depression and its social consequences set in. To begin with, the United States during this time was a place of widespread loss and frustration. Many people felt let down by the government and financial institutions and blamed them for their current situation.People wanted to escape their present condition and live life ... In this paper, a range of visual narratives and how they communicate effectively to a specific audience will be analyzed. These three visual narratives are; the horror film genre, the Film Noir/ Gangster Genre as well as the genre Science Fiction. Horror is defined as a representation for the need of suppressing uncomfortable and disturbing desires (Strinati, 2000). The horror film distinguishes between what is normal and what is monstrous (Grant, 2007). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The characters are usually materialistic, street–smart and self–destructive (Dirks, 2018) this is expressed in the film Goodfellas (1990) which is based off the portrayal of the life of Henry Hill, an FBI informant. In the Do you think I'm funny scene, the mobster who was loud and speaking the loudest fell into the clichГ© character category as his behavior was self–destructive and boisterous. The gangster's success is typically followed by his failure (Wilson, 2015). The gangster film provides a critical perspective on the American Dream that warns humans of the consequences associated with consumerism and greed (Hoffman, 2014). This genre involves a lot of brutality (Hoffman, 2014) which in the scene of Goodfellas is exhibited when a bottle was smashed on the head of a waiter who was speaking to the mobster. The film noir brings up a series of generic, stylistic or traits from Hollywood films between a specific period of time, for example; the characters and stories (Femmes Fatales hiring private eyes). The Film noir also includes urban settings (Naremore, n.d.) one of which is seen in the movie Goodfellas where the I'm funny how scene is shot in a busy restaurant in an urban area. The Iconography of Film Noir can be found in the clothing of the characters which consist of suits and/or snap–brim hats which were seen in the movie Goodfellas. The primary moods of film noir were melancholy, evil, guilt, desperation and paranoia (Dirks, 2018). Film noir films showed the dark side of humans (Dirks, 2018) which is seen in the boisterous and drunk behaviors of the characters in the I'm funny how scene of Goodfellas. The lighting in Film Noir films can be describes as expressionistic (Dirks, 2018) meaning that it was close to the lighting that would be found in real life. The camera angles of these ... Capone's Big Jim: Colosimo As A Bouncer At about 20 years of age, Capone left New York for Chicago at the invitation of Johnny Torrio, who was imported by crime boss James "Big Jim" Colosimo as an enforcer. The Gangster Genre of Films Essays 'The Godfather' is the most revolutionary gangster film of all time, it rewrote the gangster genre in such a stylized way that all latter gangster films have conformed to this genre but also evolved it as films have progressed. Directed by Francis Ford Coppola 'The Godfather' re–invented the gangster genre elevating it to a Hollywood status and making it commercially profitable. It looks into the life of the 'Corleone' family and represents America at that point in time. It portrays the violence and power, corruption and justice, honour and obligation apparent at that time. All "gangster movies" have been judged by the standards of this one, it has a very strong script that is well plotted, although at times difficult to understand. Two other gangster directors are Quentin Tarantino, famous for many films but 'Pulp Fiction' stands out, and Guy Ritchie, the writer of 'Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels .' and 'Snatch'. Both of these writers have been influenced by 'The Godfather', its stereotypes, plots and gangster families, and although both writers have both influenced the genre in their separate ways, neither of them have made quite the impact that 'The Godfather' did. However, 'Pulp Fiction' adopted a large cult status, it became increasingly popular and became a Hollywood blockbuster, it did in its own re–invent the gangster genre regarding the association of humour and the subversion of the original 'Godfather' genre. Tarantino made 'Pulp Fiction' in 1994 and it was regarded as innovative and different, he plays around with the timeline of the three inter–connecting storylines that leaves you dazed and confused, but strangely satisfied. Tarantino manages this by introducing the protagonist of each story in the previous story, either as a minor character or a stock character. This gives you the impression that you have ... Love. is a Chinese love story filled with humor and grilled sausage. While watching this movie, I noticed many trends common among similar stories, such as the girl who can see ghosts, the ghost who can't pass on to heaven because he has a regret, and the boy who likes the girl. Although these clichГ©s were not mentioned in Foster's book, there were still many things I could deduce about the movie only after reading about Foster's methods. Of Thomas C. Foster's twenty–seven chapters, in his book, "How To Read Literature Like A Professor," the chapters I found most applicable to my movie were chapters nine, eleven, and fifteen. Firstly, chapter nine of Foster's book made one thing very clear: "It's never just the rain." (Foster, 70) Since rain can be "more mysterious, murkier, more isolating than most other weather conditions" (Foster, 71), the director uses the rain to add a bit of mystery to the mood of the joyful scene with this unnamed, mysterious boy whom the female protagonist (Xiying) is interested in (romantically). The rain also serves as a plot device and force pushing Xiying and the boy together, even though it's clear that Xiying is going to end up with A–Tuo (the boy who likes her). The purpose of pushing Xiying and the mystery boy together is to create enough of a connection between them for Xiying to choose the boy over A–Tuo ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Popularity of Gangster Films in the Early Nineteen–Thirties The late 1920s in America was a particularly tumultuous period of time for the country. The Wall Street Crash in 1929 had led to high levels of unemployment and dissatisfaction within the country. The Depression (1929 –1934), which was a direct result of The Wall Street Crash, led to a breakdown of industry and commerce within the country and weakened its global position as a superpower. Initially the gangsters of the period were seen as high achievers as they were associated with the proletariat and seemed to be capable of rising above there roots, even during hard times in America, and achieve wealth. When considering the socio–economic factors it is easy to understand why such men were considered as "gangster–heroes"[3] who represented the people, however the only way that gangsters could achieve this wealth, subsequently fulfilling the American Dream, was by stealing it. "Accruing capital meant accruing power over others"[4]. Therefore it could be argued that the success gangsters exemplified was a perverse form of the American dream as it disregarded some of the key elements of the ideal. The fact that at this stage in America gangsters were the only group within society who could make upward mobility believable, "tells much about how legitimate institutions had failed – but that mobility was still at the core of what Americans held to be the American dream"[5]. In the early 1930's productions began within Hollywood of what were commonly described as "social problem pictures"[6], these films dealt specifically with the social difficulties of the period such as unemployment/labour struggles ("Black ... In the movie, Frank Lucas constructs his own business of illegal work after his boss, Bumpy Johnson, passes away. Frank builds a heroin business, following in the footsteps of Bumpy, and becomes the most powerful crime boss in Manhattan. Furthermore, because of Frank's immoral ways, he gets caught by the police and is sentenced to 15 years in prison. As the movie progresses I form a couple assumptions of what could happen in the short term and long term. First off, when Frank Lucas attains his heroin I believe that in the short term he will succeed. Frank has established a vast amount of insights into the drug business from Bumpy, and from what he has learned he will take in and apply it to his situation. However, all immoral acts will have to be put to an end, so in the long term, Frank's heroin business will be caught. Gangster film has a certain formula, where any country can use its intrinsic convections, but it's also adaptable enough to conform with any particular country's context without losing its inherent meaning. In French cinema following the Second World War, for example, there was a visible shift that had French films shadow Hollywood's approach. Director Jean–Pierre Melville was one of the pioneers of the French crime movie. In 1956 his appreciation of the American gangster and film noir led way to "Bob le Flambeur". Rumor has it; any business owner who refuses to do business with Capone gets their business burnt to the ground. With this kind of initiative driving local businesses to do business with him, Capone has built a moneymaking machine; with bootlegging, prostitution, and gambling Capone has made millions of dollars off his business (History.com Staff). Everyone knows not to mess with Capone, especially not the people he loves and surrounds himself. When the time came to collect from people who owed the Outfit, and they refused, changing their minds' was difficult, and scary. One situation messed me up pretty bad. It was right after I joined the gang. I had to prove myself to everybody in the Outfit, and especially Al Capone himself. I was given a special task: to "persuade" a businessman named Carl to buy more of our alcohol so he could sell it in his bar. Everyone made it seem like a simple enough task, so I did not worry too much. The man's neighborhood was deserted. No one in sight and no one in ear shot. This was familiar; it reminded me of my own neighborhood. I knew the kind of amount of fear felt to clear the roads when gangsters were coming. The thought of the fear in those people's minds; so much fear, they decided to hide away in their homes and practically lock their business doors; sent chills up and down my entire being, especially because I have known that fear all too well. The roads were so deserted I could hear the sound of my own heartbeat, which was racing unlike any other. When we finally arrived at our destination, my heart seemed to slow, as if the only thing worrying me was the drive over. Carl's business looked like a regular old gin mill (Slang of the 1920's), it seemed to be an up and coming one, too. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This is a Brazilian film that represents and portrays the violence and horrors of living within the Brazilian Slums, known as favelas. * With over 500 slums, the favelas existed within the regions of Rio de Janeiro, containing more than a third of the city's population. The word favela refers to a community of people who neither own nor have formal permission to occupy land. Rio De Janerio's favelas were constructed in a period of rapid industrialization, and these favelas were entirely created to keep the poor isolated from the city's center where the more upper class people were based.* Based in Rio De Janerio, this film is ... As Brazil only established a form of democracy in the 1980s, after being under authoritarian control for over half a century it left the country in an extremely divided society. Chaos was bound to occur and thus the drug problem spread vastly throughout Brazil. In this world of violence, children are exposed to experienced teenage gangsters who provide the criminal influence and training to them. The exposed children then start with gaining money from various stealing, looting, robberies and thus progresses to more severe criminal acts.* Murders also occur and gang warfare, which reflects to the reality of life within the Brazilian slums.* The particular part of the film that I chose to analyse was, in my opinion, the most interesting and significant scene within the film. * What made me gain ... Though gangster films have their root in the silent era, the genre became widely popular in the 1930's Hollywood Studio era, which is characterized by the Hollywood Genre System. Genre films offered economic advantages, including the repeated use of standardized themes, elements, characters and iconography. Additionally, genre films were easily marketable, as audiences knew what to expect from each genre. • 38. Gangster Films : The Most Complex Category Of Films Introduction Gangster films are the most complex category of films that mirror our views on the moral justice. Crime films centered on criminal activities such as hoodlums, alcohol during prohibition, bank robbery, and petty theft. Admittedly, the criminal activities that featured in the gangster films got executed against the laws, and they were carried out with no regard to the safety of human life. They evolve around gangsters who were motivated to seek power and wealth. The earliest gangster films in the United States can be traced back to the silent epoch of 1897–1927 when the country was experiencing the progressive era (Kolker 67). The crime films during this period capitalized on the social conditions that were being encountered in the United States such as the immigration and urbanization that resulted in increasing of organized crimes, distrust of the government and social anarchy. Somewhere along the way, though, lines were strewn and those values and morals became extinct by nature. Now with misinterpreted ideals and ideas of logical fallacies as our only reference to the normal way of living, life is made to be more complicated and full of anxiety. In the short stories of "Stone Soup" by Barbara Kingsolver and "The Gangster as Tragic Hero" by Robert Warshow these non–realistic values are tackled and confronted to reveal the true ideals of the modern day world and the effects on its people. Slavery has been abolished, women's rights have been achieved, depressions have been conquered, wars have been fought, minorities are lawfully considered equal, and gay and other martial freedoms are coming forth. The most logical circumstances have always been around and known to be true through nature. Humans are a social breed and strive for a sole companion but, none–the–less, we are animals designed to survive and re–populate. Our increased life expectancy and uncontestable ability to manifest our own happiness only provides more inconsistency when it comes to our families. We weren't meant to be together for years and years, we were just meant to be together. Where the line is draw is left completely up to us as the individual. As Kingslover states, "If there is a normal for humans, at all, I expect it looks like two or three Families of Dolls, connected variously by kinship and passion, shuffled like cards and strewn over several shoeboxes." In conclusion Barbara Kingsolver gets across that it is alright to be different in the field of family and that all families have skeletons in the closet may it be divorce, death, or even a gay member.
