Media analysis
1. This is the contents page from Vibe magazine it is a popular magazine its main genres is Hip
Hop and RnB, Vibe’s target audience would be the younger generation roughly 16-29 I
assume. Firstly the masthead on this page is the word ‘contents’ which is split up into three
sections dominating the right side of the page this type of style is what Vibe’s magazine is
known to do in all of their issues, the masthead is quite unique. What stood out to me when
I first saw this contents page is that the text was in white and by it being in white with a
quite dark-ish background drew me in and made me as a reader more intrigued to read on
and want to know what’s going to be written in this magazine. The main image on the page
is of a well know RnB artist named Ciara the pose that she doing is quite unique because
she’s lying on her back the reason why I like the pose that she’s in is because her legs are in
a ‘V’ shape which to me I think that it could represent the title of the magazine Vibe, the
pose that the artist has done kind of shows the stereotypical view that people view female
RnB artist in which is quite sexual because of the outfit that she is wearing. The image
appeals to both men and women the reason why I would say this is because the image
shows off a women which seems very confident being half naked and the message that this
may give out to some young girls is that they should embrace their body and show it
however it may make some feel a bit intimidated and this image also appeals to guys
because she is a beautiful confident young lady in a provocative outfit.
2. This XXL magazine clearly suggest masculinity and gives an idea that XXL’s target audience
are Hip-Hop, R&B and Rap listeners. This is shown through a variety of ways for example
diamonds/Bling which associate the culture of a hip-hop artist as many hip-hop/Rap artists
wear lots of jewellery and bling, both of the artist in the main image are wearing jewellery
this is quite stereotypical and also because Soulja Boy the artist in the front has on a lot of
jewellery it could symbolise his wealth industry. Secondly Soulja Boy has a lot of tattoos so
viewer may see this magazine as quite masculine, I would say that its target audience is for
mostly men however very few women the reason why I would say women is because then
men are half naked so some females may find it quite attractive and also there posture in
the main image seems quite confident however some people may argue that their pose may
seem a bit homo-erotic. The red colour in the masthead could symbolise power and passion.
3. This article is very effective in terms of its appeal to its audience it made me as an audience quite
curious to why she was posed like that and also made me more intrigued to read more about the
article. In this double page spread of Lana Del Rey the main image is a close up of her with
her hand around her neck which is quite eye- catching because her pose is very seductive
however it also looks evil , they way that she is portrayed is quite dark, demonic and
mysterious look in a lustful and pleasurable way it seems as if she meant to be portrayed as
someone who is kind of possessed the reason why I think that is because of the colours they
have used such as a dark blue, black and a bit of red. I think that the image is quite seductive
and could show desire or lust because her eyes are closed this also links in with the colour
red that they have used which could mean that she has a passion for her music and what
she does and also desires to be more famous and to be prom queen, however the use of
blue could suggest depression because she doesn’t look very happy in the picture in a way I
think the red could also link in with the blue because the colour red could symbolise the that
she has experienced in the past because she wasn’t able to become a prom queen so that’s
why she’s dressed in a prom dress and has on a crown. The pose that she has done in this
picture could suggest that maybe she feels suicidal the reason why I think that is because of
the way how her fingers are on her neck. The layout and composition of the text is written
in a column which gives it a simplistic look because the picture is the main focus of the page.
In a way by the layout being quite simplistic it could symbolise Lana’s angelic and calm side
to her if I was to compare it with picture of her which is quite demonic and shows the darker
side to her. The big S stands out to me the most on right hand side of the page.
4. The main image is of a Hip-Hop artist this links in with the genre of this music magazine
which Hip-Hop and RnB. The artist is posed topless and he is covered in tattoos which shows
a masculine side to the magazine however the red-ish/pink-ish background shows the
feminine side to the magazine however it could symbolise power or pain in a subtle way tp
do with how the artist is feeling. His pose seems quite fierce and boastful the reason why I
would assume this is because of the way that he’s holding his jewellery it seems to me that
he’s showing off the amount of bling he has because he wants his audience to know how
successful he is in a unique way. By the artist who is known as Plies seems quite confident
and wealthy.

Jay-Z has everything and he’s a very powerful guy. The world wealth stands serious pose
out to me a lot it suggest to me that he has legacy which makes him stand which could
out because it’s unusual for a black person to be a legacy . Some male indicate that he’s
audience my aspire to be like him however some may envy his life and feel serious about his
quite emasculated music
The way that he is dressed links in with the
