What is Bashment Music? Understanding the Genre
1. What is Bashment Music?
Bashment is also known as dancehall music which is a popular genre to Jamaicans, this type of music
was developed in 1978 it’s kind of like reggae and grime put together but it has dance-full fast
beat/pace to it. In the mid-1990s with the rise of dancehall quite a few artists developed a very
strong connection between dancehall and Rastafari. Dancehall music has come under criticism from
international organizations and individuals for its violent and sometimes homophobic lyrics, although
the lyrical themes are more varied than simply dealing with slackness and violence.

Although Bashment music is very popular in the Caribbean and its getting more recognised in the UK
and in other countries but Bashment music is only played on private radio stations in the UK this is
because quite a few of the record labels out there don’t exactly see it as genre that can compete in
the global market so they don’t promote the artist and genre so that it can get more publicity so the
genre isn’t played on public radio stations.
Why I chose to do a Bashment magazine?
The reason why I decided to do a Bashment magazine is first of all because I wanted to show a more
sophisticated, clean side to Bashment artist. Some people view Bashment artist in a ‘bad light’ what I
mean by this is that some public viewers that aren’t used to culture and environment that the term
bashment comes forms wont understand the genre or the artist some of them think that Bashment
artist are all the same for example all the women artist wear skimpy tight provocative outfits while
all the guys wear string vest and they all talk about violence, women in a negative manor and also
that they are homophobic. I tried to do the opposite of what people thought a stereotypical
Bashment artist would look like, I went for a clean cut look with Jamaican colours in the background
so that my music magazine still shows what country it originated from. Secondly bashment is a niche
genre and I’ve done some secondary research on the internet and couldn’t find a Bashment
magazine.
