Peripheral nervous system (pns)
1. PERIPHERAL NERVOUS SYSTEM
(PNS)
It consists of sensory neurons and motor neurons
which form ganglia and nerves.
GANGLIA
Ganglia are the concentrations of cell bodies of
neurons. It often interconnects with other ganglia to
form a complex system called plexus.
NERVE
Nerves are the bundles of axons or dendrites,
bounded by connective tissue.
2. CLASSIFICATION OF NERVES
Functional Classification
They may be sensory, motor or mixed nerves
depending upon the direction of impulse.
Mixed nerves contains both sensory and
motor nerves.
3. Regional Classification
Cerebral Nerves
They arise or lead to brain
Also called Cranial nerves
All 3 type of nerves
12 pairs
Spinal nerves
They arise or lead to spinal cord.
31 pairs
(8 cervical, 12 thoracic, 5 lumbar, 5 sacral and 1
coccygeal)
Only mixed nerves
