Essay About The Storm
Grandma didn't want to go to Florida. We're halfway there and she's going whether she likes it or
not. We have never been close to Grandma and we would like to get to know her. We have not seen
her in a very long time. We have, essentially, kidnapped her but she seems to be waking up. We keep
driving, trying not to panic at the fact that she'll realize what has happened. After hearing the
forecast this morning it is supposed to storm later today but as of now there are only a few clouds
covering up the blue sky. She wakes up after we hit a bump in the road. After checking her
surroundings and coming to her senses, she begins to laugh, almost maniacally. James asks, "
Grandma, what is so funny?" she smirks and replies, " Oh, nothing. Can ... Show more content on

The sky is an eerie dusk with different shades of purple and black. All of a sudden a house appears
in the midst of the woods. Grandma drives the remainder of the road to the house. The house is very
worn and it's clear it has been abandoned for a long time yet Grandma seemed to know where she
was going. Grandma drags James out of the car and drags his unconscious body around the house
and through the mud to a cellar in the back of the house. She opens the door to the cellar and steps
down onto the creaking stairs. Each step seems louder than the last. As she finally reaches the
bottom of the cellar the concrete floor is as cold as ice. She sets James on the floor like a doll.
Amazingly, this whole time Grandma has never struggled with moving him. She ties him up and
goes to the corner of the cellar and gets several materials. She begins to place them around James
and chants to begin the sacrificial ritual," Take this man, take him in my place and free me of this
prison." She begins to tremble after speaking this and a ghostly figure emerges from Grandma's
body and the body collapses to the floor, lifeless. All of the noise wakes up James. James, still
dazed, questions where he is but quickly finds out he is in peril. The ghost turns to him and in an ear
piercing tone," You fool, you were to stay asleep." The ghost becomes angry and objects around

Informative Essay On Halloween
What's the first thing you think of when you hear the word "Halloween"? Most people would
respond with costumes. According to history.com, however, the tradition of dressing up only started
a couple hundred years ago. This tradition has both European and Celtic roots. It was believed that
on Halloween, ghosts would come back to the earthly world. People thought that if they left their
homes they would encounter these ghosts. So that these ghosts would not recognize them, people
would wear masks when leaving their homes after dark. They believed that these masks would cause
the ghosts to mistake them for fellow spirits. People would place bowls of food outside of their
doors to keep the ghosts from attempting to enter the homes.

Before that it was mainly celebrated in Maryland and the southern colonies. As beliefs and customs
of the different ethnic groups of the Europeans and American Indians began to mesh, a distinct
American version of Halloween began to emerge. These first celebrations were public events that
were held to celebrate the harvest. Neighbors would share stories of the dead and scary stories, tell
each other's fortunes, dance and sing. In the second half of the 19th–century, America was flooded
with new immigrants, who helped popularize the celebration of Halloween nationally. Taking from
the Irish and English traditions, Americans began to dress up in costumes and go house to house
asking for food or money. This tradition eventually became known as "trick–or–treating." In the late
1800's, American's wanted to mold Halloween into a holiday that was centered on community and
neighborly get–togethers. They did not want the main focus of the holiday to be ghosts, pranks, and
witchcraft. At the turn of the century, parties, for both adults and children, became the most common
way to celebrate the holiday. These parties were focused on food, games, and festive costumes.
Everyone was encouraged to take anything "frightening" or "grotesque" out of their Halloween
celebrations. By the beginning of the twentieth century, Halloween lost most of its superstitious and

Not too far from the apostle Island is town of Superior, which is home of the Fairlawn Mansion. The
mansion was built by Martin Patterson and used as a resting spot for immigrants from Canada.
Every immigrant that came in and out of Mr. Patterson home he treated as if they where family

Remembrance Short Story
Zachary Drouillard 1/4/18 Orange Class Remembrance Short Story For years before his sudden
death, Mark had lived a relatively boring life, working in a cubicle, with only one real friend, and
little to no contact with his family. He had the same routine everyday, which began with getting
ready for work, driving to work, and working. Then going home, eating, then sleeping. His whole
world circled around work. Mark had no reason to quit his job and pursue a new life, as he was very
financially stable and had little to no worries. This all changed one day, during Mark's everyday
commute to work. As he was going through an intersection, a large semi–truck drove straight
through the red light and plowed directly into Mark's car. Mark died on impact, and the truck driver
lived. All mark saw was the road ahead of him, and then nothing. Just an endless void of blackness.
After a second, he finally felt himself coming back to "reality" As he regained his consciousness he
panicked at the sight of hundreds of people, all of which were slightly see through, almost like
ghosts. His environment looked completely normal, and he was at that same intersection where his
accident had happened. There were some people that did not look like ghosts, such as the people
driving cars on the road. Despite his current state of panic, he refrained from yelling out for help. In
this place he was at, Mark felt a strong sense of safety, one that he had rarely felt before this
moment. All of the

Theme Of Ghost House By Robert Frost
After a lovely dinner party, guests strolled out towards the veranda to adore the sunset. A young
woman then asked an elderly man, "Oh, Mr. Frost, isn't it a lovely sunset?". The elderly man quickly
responds in a curt demeanor, "I never discuss business after dinner". Robert Frost, lived from 1874 to
1963, was a poet who wrote magnificent ballads revealing the seemingly simple nature of humans in
a complex manner. At the beginning of his journey,Mr. Frost started his career as an English teacher,
later realizing that people needed to know what the world lays out for them as he has had experience
with students and their naivety. He pronounces the similarities between desire and hatred, the effect
of the choices humans make, the dreary emotions of death and much more, so that he could relate to
his audience and have his words leave an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Frost applies his compassionate style towards people in his bleak ballad, Ghost House, influentially
using the abstruse symbolism and depressing imagery in order to achieve a desolate tone. As the
poem is depressing, the symbolism utilized throughout contributes to the effect as the speaker "
dwell[ed] in a lonely house...and left no trace but the cellar walls, and a cellar in which the daylight
falls " The lack of the delight from daylight and absence of a sound structure of the house
symbolizes death, as the area was left in smithereens and ghosts crept the premises, conveys the
depressing tone. Also, the imagery provides a clearer view of the landscape to the readers with the
"ruined fences" and "grape–vine shield" that surrounds the house. The gloomy image of pure
destruction displayed is desolate as the vivid image detailed description is an emphasis of the
grotesque nature of the house, just like the emotions we feel when viewing a hideous sight, therefore
relaying a melancholy tone. In this particular poem, the techniques Frost use assist him in creating
particular tones, connecting to his sympathetic style as

Route 64: A Short Story
Route 64 Our friends Teagan and Jimmy were firm believers in ghosts and claimed to have seen the
mysterious blonde–haired ghost that haunted Route 64. My brother and I were sitting with them at
dinner one night, and we started kidding them about it. "Funny how we've never seen him, and we
drive that stretch of road all the time," my brother Jim drawled."You skeptic," Teagan said,
emphasizing the word as if it were a curse. "One of these days, you're gonna find out I'm right." The
evening ended pleasantly, and it wasn't long before Jim and I were driving home through the crisp
fall air. "Let's take Route 64," Jill said suddenly, flashing me a sideways look."Hoping to see a
ghost?" I chuckled, taking the turn as she directed. "Ha!" Jim snorted derisively. He yawned and

Heart pounding in terror, I hit the gas. A moment later, I glanced in the rearview mirror and saw the
blonde–haired man was sitting in the back seat of our car. Jim shrieked again and began hitting the
ghost with anything he could grab. I kept looking back and forth between my brother, the ghost, and
the road ahead, determined that I was not going to let the blonde–haired ghost force us into a crazy
accident. I glanced toward the back seat for a moment, and the ghost laughed, a laugh that made my
teeth tingle and the hairs on my neck stand up. It felt like a spider was crawling on the back of my
neck. "Hail Mary, full of grace; the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is
the fruit of thy womb, Jesus." Glancing in the mirror, I saw the ghost grimace as she recited the holy
words. Then he vanished without a trace. I got us out of there much faster than the speed limit
allowed. I was shaking from head to toe, and Jim was also shaking hysterically. As soon as I pulled
into the driveway and turned off the car, we both ran inside as fast as we could. I couldn't sleep for
many night because of it. I never drove on route 64

How Did Scrooge Change Throughout A Christmas Carol
The play of A Christmas Carol is a time traveling novel written by Charles Dickens, and was
adapted by Israel Horowitz. Through looking at the past, present, and future, it changed the time
traveler, Ebenezer Scrooge forever. All of the great changes are made through one single Christmas
Eve, where the ghost of Christmas past, present, and future visited Mr. Scrooge, offering him an
opportunity to redeem himself and change his mean, miserly ways. Every ghost taught Scrooge
great lessons, but the ghost of Christmas past affected Scrooge the most, and it builds up the
foundation of such heartwarming change. To begin with, the ghost of Christmas past made Scrooge
see a picture of love and loneliness. The first journey was to a school campus, with a lonely, solitary
boy, and of course it was the young Ebenezer, without friends and without love. For the first time,
Scrooge had compassion, "There was a boy singing a Christmas Carol at my door last night," he
explains to the ghost. "I should like to have given him something."(Horowitz, p274) It's the love for
himself that led him to think for others. Secondly, the ghost took Scrooge to a scene where his
beloved sister, Fan, took him home from school. He remembered her heartwarming actions; how a
little five–year–old girl made him overflow with love, and he was so touched. In ... Show more

He had love instead of hatred. According to the play, Mrs. Cratchit said, "... one drinks the health of
such an odious, stingy, hard, unfeeling man as Mr. Scrooge."(Horowitz, page 288) It made Scrooge
see a bigger comparison between love and loneliness. It's like Scrooge built a wall around himself,
with nobody that actually love him. He saw how money made him a unfeeling man. The decision he
had made when the ghost of Christmas past left about changing is more than just worth

Sex and Dominance in The Ghost Road Essay
Sex and Dominance in The Ghost Road
Pat Barker's The Ghost Road is a masterful literary integration of sex and war. The novel's
protagonist, the lascivious, bisexual Billy Prior once remarks: "Whole bloody western front's a
wanker's paradise," a statement with far–reaching implications concerning aggression and eroticism
(Barker 177). The novel concludes a successful trilogy, beginning with Regeneration (1991) and The
Eye in the Door (1993). Winner of the prestigious Booker Prize Award in 1995, The Ghost Road
delves into many standard Booker motifs, such as war, the British class system, memory, and
childhood, but Barker revitalizes these worn subjects. With prostitutes, lecherous priests, and the
naked body, she ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Unlike the crying child, Prior is duly subservient to the doctor's orders. Doctor Mather infantilizes
Prior, calling him "laddie" (Barker 11). His examination by the dominating doctor reminds Prior of
his childhood, and of his early sexual liaisons with men. At this early point, Barker leaves the reader
in the dark as to Prior's history as a male prostitute. Clues to this history arise throughout the first
half of the novel in flashes, as memories of childhood trauma.
This opening scene incorporates a variety of dynamics. First, the squad of running soldiers entices
Prior's sexual appetite, as do the bodies of his own men later on at the baths. This outlines the sexual
and military objectification of the male physique. Second, the domineering doctor anally penetrates
the passive Prior with his fingers, which Prior interprets as an intermingling of medical and sexual
authority. For Prior, the line between clinical and sexual authority blurs. Later, in the baths, Prior's
command authority over his naked men mixes with his desire to exercise sexual authority. Third and
finally, the doctor infantilizes his patient, spurring ghostly memories of childhood sexual abuse. As
steeped as this scene is in sexual innuendo, this is just the beginning; Barker's booker is overripe
with sexual subtexts and Foucaultian

Marley And Scrooge Character Analysis
Marley and Scrooge – the firm was known as Scrooge and Marley – although the sign had not been
changed since Marley's death, based on the information in the text, Scrooge was a tight–fisted hand
at the grindstone, a squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous, old sinner! On
page 2, I noticed the author says Scrooge has an insufficient fire, but the clerk's fire (Bob Cratchit)
was so indubitable small that it looked like one coal. Scrooge was known throughout the community
as an unpleasant friend to be around for the reason that his attitude is unacceptable and he his
disrespectful to others. According to the text, he is all head and no heart, which is an explanation of
Scrooge in that he has no room in his heart for kindness, for the sake of that it is taken up by the
hatred that lives within him. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

text is his nephew bursts in and says, "La–la–la, Merry Christmas!" Scrooge says, "Bah! Humbug!"

Christmas dinner with his nephew; his afterthought is sorrowful, he doesn't think that Christmas is a
requirement. Scrooge doesn't know what the point of Christmas is, the point of Christmas is to
celebrate Jesus' birthday, he also is unquestionable disrespectful because he calls everyone else an
idiot and jerk for not being depressed, Scrooge thinks others have to fill down and depressed
because he is. Scrooge thinks he has no choice to manage other people around him for the reason

Ambrose Gwinnett Bierce's The Moonlit Road
Ambrose Gwinnett Bierce is the author of many short ghost stories including "The Moonlit Road".
Bierce was born on June 24, 1842 in Meigs County, Ohio and later moved to Indiana where he spent
the remainder of his childhood. He came from an extremely large family and had 12 siblings. While
he lived in Indiana his father had a farmhouse which held a library. Bierce spent most of his time
there and later went on to say that this library was his greatest educational influence. He served in
the Civil War and had an impressive military career, eventually becoming first lieutenant.
Unfortunately, he suffered from a large head wound thus ending his stint in the military. However,
he previously said that his time in the military influenced his writing immensely. Bierce began
writing short stories in the late 1860's and discovered he had a passion for it.
Moving into his middle and end years, he married Mary Ellen Day on Christmas Day in 1871 and

Nang Nak and "The Moonlit Road" the wife seeks to reconnect with the love of her life one more

Analysis Of Wilson 's ' The Pittsburgh Cycle '
Consisting of ten plays which are each dedicated to a different decade, August Wilson's The
Pittsburgh Cycle sketches the African–American experience in the 20th century. As the second and
fourth plays of the series, Joe Turner's Come and Gone and The Piano Lesson both explore African–
American identity and inheritance in the first half of the 20th century. Wilson's two plays embody a
feature different from the naturalistic or realistic plays of the Bourgeois Theatre. As is said in the
American essayist Frank Rich's comment on Joe Turner's Come and Gone, "Mr. Wilson 's play is a
mixture of the well–made naturalistic boardinghouse drama and the mystical, non–Western theater
of ritual and metaphor" (Rich 2812), Wilson's two plays blend the realistic life with magic to evoke
resonance with African–American experience and history. Inspired by Jorge Luis Borges, the
Argentine writer who is thought to be a predecessor of magical realists, Wilson once explained his
influence: "From Borges, those wonderful gaucho stories from which I learned that you can be
specific as to a time and place and culture and still have the work resonate with the universal themes
of love, honor, duty, betrayal, etc" (Hussein 30). Borges's influence is shown in Wilson's use of
magic to reflect the racial and even universal experience in the individual lives in Joe Turner's Come
and Gone and The Piano Lesson. The magical elements of the mystic ritual, spiritual songs, haunted
piano and ghosts combine with

Examine and compare the ways in which Pat Barker in Regeneration and
Wilfred Owen in his poetry explore the nature of life in the trenches.
Pat Barker and Wilfred Owen are both successful writers in delivering an insight into trench life
from the perspective of a soldier, although in different ways. Owen, being a soldier himself, has had
first hand experience of trench life and describes the pity of war, in that war is a waste of young,
innocent lives, and the bitterness of the soldiers towards the people who do not have to fight.
Whereas
Barker recreates trench life through the nightmares, hallucinations and memories of the soldiers.

Owen describes how the waiting for the inevitable keeps the soldiers awake as the "night is silent"
and this is worse than the noise of activity. All these soldiers have to do is wait and wonder "what
are we doing here?" "But nothing happens." In the sixth stanza Owen refers to the "ghosts drag
home" almost suggesting that the soldiers are alone, not even their spirits can survive the emptiness
of the trenches. To begin with, the images in the poem appear to contrast with those in
"Regeneration" as we see Sassoon looking forward to sleeping in "clean whit sheets," although we
realise that he feels guilty that he can enjoy this luxury and his comrades cannot. He says to Graves
as he is seeing him off at the station "Dottyville is almost bearable knowing you don't have to be
vomited on," this gives us an insight into the physical well being of some of the soldiers.
After Graves has gone Sassoon "hates everybody, giggling girls, portly middle–aged men, women
whose eyes settled on his wound stripe like flies" indicating his bitterness towards anybody that
didn't have to fight and especially towards people who appeared to have "done well out of the war."
This is the same attitude displayed towards shirkers and pacifists. In "regeneration" when Mr. Prior
comes to Craiglockhart and find Billy unable to speak, he is convinced that his speech "comes when
it's convenient and goes when it isn't"

Apathy In Beloved
One hundred and fifty two years after the abolition of slavery, the intense brutality of that institution
remains a powerful reminder of the appalling cruelty of humankind. Behind the curtain of self–
proclaimed righteousness, white plantation owners toiled six million slaves from dawn to dusk,
inciting the fear of death as the slave's sole incentive to survive. Even after escaping the clutches of
slave owners, the eternal scarring nature of that barbaric institution prevents the development of a
whole, functioning person. In Beloved, Toni Morrison plunges the reader into the horrors inflicted
by slavery. Morrison demonstrates the severe lack of apathy these slave owners held in regard to
their slaves through the maring experiences and recollections ... Show more content on

The pain brought upon by slavery is neither ignorable nor temporary; instead, it is the culmination
of decades of brutal injustice, emotional isolation, and a general sense of helplessness that results in
an emotionally distant shell that is perceivable in Sethe, Paul D, and an immeasurable number of
denied slaves. Manifesting herself with the rage of a baby ghost, Beloved's early disruptions are
driven by the unvoiced cries of slaves as they experience the horrors of slavery. The ghost haunts
and plagues 124 Bluestone road, Sethe's Home, capturing the deadly "venom" (3) of the institution

feeding birds to illustrate the difficulty created by living for others. The work uses both short

Just like Christ the giver seeks to give those he takes care of as much as possible. The omnipotent
narrator has to advise his son, "Don't ask for more bread/ The world is in a haste to waken" (Lines
19–20). God who has gave humanity free will and a universe to work with, now instructs his son,
not to make things easier for them. This connects to the final line of the third stanza which reads,
"They want/ to eat the air and the stars they've hungered for, little razors" (Lines 16–17). The air and
the stars represent the extent to which human desire extends. Christian doctrine teaches that
humanities greatest desire is to live in unity with God. However, the narrator claims this is a gift
which only humanity can achieve, and to do so they must awaken. Christ the giver can only give so
much. The next line is the key as it reads, "Don't ask for a name/ you can surrender, for there are
more ghosts to placate." (lines 20–21). The father instructs his son not to provide an explanation
which will allow humans to completely understand. It is also in the nature of God to be in harmony
with humans, but as this relationship is predicated upon their free will, Jesus cannot surrender and
bring the humans he loves so much into this relationship with him without effort on their part. Here,
God mandates the necessity of human

Clinton Road : A Short Story Of A Ghost Story
Probably the most common ghost story that we hear about Clinton Road is that of a dead young boy
who hangs out under a bridge and returns coins to you after you throw them in the water. As far as
we know, this tale is unique to Clinton Road, but it is difficult to say when or how this story
began. The road and the land around it have achieved recognition through the years being an area
rife with numerous stories of paranormal occurrences such as sightings of ghosts, strange creatures
and gatherings of witches, Satanists and the Ku Klux Klan. It is also reported that professional
killers dispose of bodies in the surrounding woods–with one recorded case of this occurring. It has
been a regular subject of discussion in Weird NJ magazine, which once devoted an entire issue to it.
In the words of a local police chief, "It's a long, desolate stretch and makes the imagination go
nuts."There are very few houses along the road and much of the adjoining property is undeveloped
publicly owned woodlands (either City of Newark watershed or state forest) and the road itself is a
narrow two–lane highway that receives little maintenance, is not part of New Jersey's county–
highway system and was until fairly recently unpaved for some of its length, connecting two areas
of minimal population and growth and thus having little traffic even at the busiest times of day.It is
also notorious for having the country's longest traffic light wait. This occurs at a double intersection

Vanishing Hitchhiker Myths

Have you ever wondered why no one dares to pick a hitch hiker? The urban legend The Vanishing
Hitchhiker has been around for many generations but has also been updated with modern times. It's
been told that a man driving his car late at night in the pouring rain passed by a little girl walking on
the side of the road. The man stops and picks her up, giving her his coat. He tries to ask her
questions like where she lived and who she was and she just tells him where she lives and that her
parents are waiting for her. As they keep driving he finally turns around to say something to the little
girl but she has disappeared. The reason this legend is so popular is because it hits many main points
of why urban legends are still relevant and told today. Like many urban legends, it has the "it could
happen to anyone" situation mixed with a supernatural twist which causes urban legends to dig
deeper into our brains. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Supernatural In Macbeth Essay
In Shakespeare's Macbeth, there are many aspects of the supernatural throughout the play, all of
which influence the main character–– Macbeth, as you probably guessed. Various supernatural
factors alter Macbeth's morals until he is consumed by the evil that was formerly contained within
himself. Powers of darkness such as witches, prophecies, and ghosts all push Macbeth onto and
along the road to destruction. The chaos begins when three witches appear to Macbeth and his
buddy Banquo, and they proclaim, "All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, thane of Cawdor! ...that shalt be
king hereafter!" (I, iii, 50–51), which confuses Macbeth because the thane of Cawdor is still alive,
and he thinks it impossible for him to become king. The witches also say

Catherine's Argumentative Essay
A soft blanket of snow fills the road like an artist preparing a fresh canvas waiting for imagination to
flow from his paint brush. Laughter fills the path as a group of children walk home from school.
One of the children's names was Catherine. She was basking in all the wonderful wintry–
wonderland scenery. Instantly her feelings of awe and amazement were replaced by fear, replaced by
petrifying fear, they were replaced by really, really, really petrifying fear. In the woods, a dark figure
loomed about and then vanished. Alarmed, she pointed to where the dark figure was before it
vanished. Almost at once she asked herself was this real or just a figment of her imagination? You
decide.
Catherine chooses to believe it's a ghost, but whether she should give this ghost food and a family
heirloom is a tough choice to make. Some believe that Catherine should not have given the ghost
food, while others suggest the opposite. Catherine should not have helped the phantom for three
reasons: she was fearful, the potential accusations of others about her if the word gets out, and the
consequences.

Loggers Run Road Research Paper
History:
While not particularly famous outside of the town, you'll be hard pressed to find a local who doesn't

Leading the search was Lloyd Daylight himself, agitated that it had taken this long since the workers
had been missing for a search party to be organised (while some consider his being at the head of the
search was a show of his dedication to his employees, more likely it was due to his 2 youngest sons
being among the missing).
Officers noted that nothing appeared to be out of place, with the equipment switched off and the
main office vacated. Some locals thought that it appeared too neat and tidy, with the lodgings beds
made and the staff's various clothing and items neatly stowed away.
Items belong to the missing loggers were noticeably absent, though this was more likely because
they were returning to town for their month off. The search is ended:
Unfortunately, on August 31, the search was officially called off, after several member of the search
party themselves had disappeared whilst wandering through the forest searching for evidence of the
missing Loggers.

Many people ask what are ghost. A ghost is an apparition of a dead person that is believed to appear

Deepening My Understanding of the English Language
One may ask "Why do we have to attend English classes when we can already speak and write?"
Well, the reason is to master the skills of writing a good argument, which we expect to learn in
English classes. In our lives, everything we do comes with reasons, so that we can justify our
actions. This applies to different genres of literature as well; in the ghost stories genre, authors
attempt to scare, teach moral lessons or entertain through their writings. Even each ghost story has
its own significant purpose. In the ghost story, "The Open Window", Saki deliberately replaces
ghosts with a human character who manipulates truths in order to prove the ultimate danger of the
unpredictability of human behavior. In a ghost story, readers would expect the presence of a ghost.
According to Cox and Gilbert, the dead will never go away and they remain as ghosts; the most
effective way of accommodating the ghosts is to encapsulate them in stories (The Oxford Book of
English Ghost Stories ix). This affirms the point that there will be ghosts in ghost stories, as readers
will be anticipating its presence. In "The Open Window", the reader's anticipation slowly builds
through a thorough description of the apparent tragedy, characters' reactions and most importantly,
the explanation of how "in the deepening twilight three figures were walking across the lawn
towards the window" (596); the readers are expecting the appearance of a ghost. However, Saki
deliberately replaces the ghosts with a

The Great Divorce Passage Analysis
In The Great Divorce, Lewis uses the conversation with the murderer and the innocent bystander to
illustrate that those who end up in hell are those who desire justice over mercy. In the story, the
"decent chap" believes that his life on earth merited him heaven, and he is confused as to why the
murderer got into heaven. He believed that he could earn his way into heaven through his works:
through justice. This ghost saw the offer of salvation through repentance as charity. Since he
believed salvation came through his works, he refused to accept salvation as a gift. This ghost prided
himself on his own works, and this led him to damnation. He cried, "I came here to get my rights,
see? Not to go sniveling along on charity tied onto you apron–strings"

Wisconsin doesn't just have haunted houses. On a country road in Elkhorn, Wisconsin, many have
reported witnessing a creature that has the same characteristics as what we would call a werewolf.
Eventually, the creature was named the "Beast of Bray Road." This creature is also considered the
"Werewolf of Wisconsin."
One of the first sightings was in 1936 by Mark Schackelman. According to Linda S. Godfrey in her
book, The Beast of Bray Road: Tailing Wisconsin's Werewolf, Schackelman "encountered a strange
creature on the St. Colletta's grounds at midnight on two separate nights. The first night, he found
the creature kneeling atop a Native American burial mound. The strange, upright being appeared to
be clawing the ground but fled when the watchman approached" (24).
The beast supposedly has the body of a man covered in fur and the head of a wolf with pointed ears.
Some claim to have photos of it as evidence but many don't believe that those photos are real.

The Myrtles Plantation : A Site Of Dehumanization
The Myrtles Plantation can be understood as a site of dehumanization. It is located in St.
Francisville, Louisiana. David Bradford built the plantation in 1794 on an ancient Tunica Indian
burial gound (The Moonlight Road). After his death, the property was passed down to different
family members and own by various other families (The Myrtles Plantation). The house is rumoured
to be the site for more than 10 murders and suicides and at least 12 ghosts (The Myrtles Plantation).
The plantation was built on an ancient Indigenous burial land and it was home to a number of
different families who owned Black slaves. Thus, the plantation is haunted not only by instances of
terror, but is also haunted by these histories of violence. The house and property conjures feelings of
hate, disrespect and the belittling of others. From the hanging of Black slaves to the mysterious
murders and happenings of the house, The Myrtles Plantation invokes feelings of unresolved social
and economic violence. The haunting of The Myrtles Planation does not simply refer to the unrest of
certain sprits but rather it is haunted by the inherent dehumanization of certain bodies on the basis of
race, gender, and class. Thus, this paper will be an analysis of The Myrtles Planation as a haunted
house. It will prove that The Myrtles Plantation is haunted by the histories of violence and
oppression that occurred within the space, which manifests through ghosts and sprits that are

The Ghost Road War
'Writing about conflict allows a writer to consider many other issues, often subverting the idea that
war is only about death and destruction'.
Wilfred Owen wrote, "All poets must be truthful" and further to that, "all poets can do is warn"
suggesting that writing about conflict does allow writers to consider many other issues as each
writer must be truthful about their own experiences and understandings. This brings in concepts of
psychology, sexuality and power that are all prevalent within every aspect of war and so is
subverting the idea that war is only about death and destruction. However, it can be argued that
every aspect of war, whilst potentially seeming different and seeming from different viewpoints,

Neither the war, nor the associating aspects are portrayed in a positive light. The reader is presented
with the realities of war and whilst they may be power based realities, stemming from an outdated
instinct for men to prove themselves as men, they result in death and distraction. In the poem
"American Football' by Harold Pinter, the poetic voice carries out profanities, exclaiming, 'We blew
the shit out of them,' using scatalogical imagery to emphasise the disregard for human life, instead
focusing on the power and thrill of 'winning'. However, the most powerful line of the poem the last,
where the poetic voice demands, 'Now I want you to come over here and kiss me on the mouth.' The
contrast between the previous tone of the poem and the sudden demand for such an intimate action
is even stringer, in that there is no recognition of the difference at any point in the poem. It is a clear
demonstration of the effects of war upon an individuals mentality and psychological stability,
showing how the power violence that is an inherent part of war has an addictive quality that leaves
soldiers unable to settle into a civilian lifestyle and often being violent to those around them,
creating continuous distraction even after the war is

people who inhabited this place as if he'd known them all personally, which due to the eerie nature
of this town, he might well have. Robert is in the process of putting together a book on the history of
the town. Hopefully it will be available before long, as just the few stories he told us made me want
to learn more.
On a late April day, snow still thick on the high peaks, I joined the Eastern Sierra 4X4 Club for a trip
up the rugged, steep dirt road to Cerro Gordo. We drove south out of Bishop, known as the "Little
Town with a Big Back Yard," and headed south to Lone Pine, where we picked up the 136, the road
over to Death Valley. Just past the fading town of Keeler, we turned left and abandoned the highway
for a dirt road that wound up eight miles to this historic mining town. Bishop indeed has a very big
back yard.
It was clear, long before reaching our destination, that my two wheel drive car wouldn't have made
it, particularly on a steep section with loose rock. A good SUV with fairly high clearance would do
just fine in dry weather. A four wheel vehicle could continue on the White Mountain Talc Road,
which runs along the ridge and is supposed to return to the 395 at some distance north, but don't take
my word on that before heading out.
Cerro Gordo was considered

Essay About The Storm

  • 1. Essay About The Storm Grandma didn't want to go to Florida. We're halfway there and she's going whether she likes it or not. We have never been close to Grandma and we would like to get to know her. We have not seen her in a very long time. We have, essentially, kidnapped her but she seems to be waking up. We keep driving, trying not to panic at the fact that she'll realize what has happened. After hearing the forecast this morning it is supposed to storm later today but as of now there are only a few clouds covering up the blue sky. She wakes up after we hit a bump in the road. After checking her surroundings and coming to her senses, she begins to laugh, almost maniacally. James asks, " Grandma, what is so funny?" she smirks and replies, " Oh, nothing. Can ... Grandma drives the remainder of the road to the house. The house is very worn and it's clear it has been abandoned for a long time yet Grandma seemed to know where she was going. Grandma drags James out of the car and drags his unconscious body around the house and through the mud to a cellar in the back of the house. She opens the door to the cellar and steps down onto the creaking stairs. Each step seems louder than the last. As she finally reaches the bottom of the cellar the concrete floor is as cold as ice. She sets James on the floor like a doll. Amazingly, this whole time Grandma has never struggled with moving him. She ties him up and goes to the corner of the cellar and gets several materials. She begins to place them around James and chants to begin the sacrificial ritual," Take this man, take him in my place and free me of this prison." She begins to tremble after speaking this and a ghostly figure emerges from Grandma's body and the body collapses to the floor, lifeless. All of the noise wakes up James. James, still dazed, questions where he is but quickly finds out he is in peril. The ghost turns to him and in an ear piercing tone," You fool, you were to stay asleep." • 3. Informative Essay On Halloween What's the first thing you think of when you hear the word "Halloween"? Most people would respond with costumes. According to history.com, however, the tradition of dressing up only started a couple hundred years ago. This tradition has both European and Celtic roots. It was believed that on Halloween, ghosts would come back to the earthly world. People thought that if they left their homes they would encounter these ghosts. So that these ghosts would not recognize them, people would wear masks when leaving their homes after dark. They believed that these masks would cause the ghosts to mistake them for fellow spirits. People would place bowls of food outside of their doors to keep the ghosts from attempting to enter the homes. Halloween began ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Before that it was mainly celebrated in Maryland and the southern colonies. As beliefs and customs of the different ethnic groups of the Europeans and American Indians began to mesh, a distinct American version of Halloween began to emerge. These first celebrations were public events that were held to celebrate the harvest. Neighbors would share stories of the dead and scary stories, tell each other's fortunes, dance and sing. In the second half of the 19th–century, America was flooded with new immigrants, who helped popularize the celebration of Halloween nationally. Taking from the Irish and English traditions, Americans began to dress up in costumes and go house to house asking for food or money. This tradition eventually became known as "trick–or–treating." In the late 1800's, American's wanted to mold Halloween into a holiday that was centered on community and neighborly get–togethers. They did not want the main focus of the holiday to be ghosts, pranks, and witchcraft. At the turn of the century, parties, for both adults and children, became the most common way to celebrate the holiday. These parties were focused on food, games, and festive costumes. Everyone was encouraged to take anything "frightening" or "grotesque" out of their Halloween celebrations. By the beginning of the twentieth century, Halloween lost most of its superstitious and religious ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Remembrance Short Story Zachary Drouillard 1/4/18 Orange Class Remembrance Short Story For years before his sudden death, Mark had lived a relatively boring life, working in a cubicle, with only one real friend, and little to no contact with his family. He had the same routine everyday, which began with getting ready for work, driving to work, and working. Then going home, eating, then sleeping. His whole world circled around work. Mark had no reason to quit his job and pursue a new life, as he was very financially stable and had little to no worries. This all changed one day, during Mark's everyday commute to work. As he was going through an intersection, a large semi–truck drove straight through the red light and plowed directly into Mark's car. Mark died on impact, and the truck driver lived. All mark saw was the road ahead of him, and then nothing. Just an endless void of blackness. After a second, he finally felt himself coming back to "reality" As he regained his consciousness he panicked at the sight of hundreds of people, all of which were slightly see through, almost like ghosts. His environment looked completely normal, and he was at that same intersection where his accident had happened. There were some people that did not look like ghosts, such as the people driving cars on the road. Despite his current state of panic, he refrained from yelling out for help. In this place he was at, Mark felt a strong sense of safety, one that he had rarely felt before this moment. All of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Theme Of Ghost House By Robert Frost After a lovely dinner party, guests strolled out towards the veranda to adore the sunset. A young woman then asked an elderly man, "Oh, Mr. Frost, isn't it a lovely sunset?". The elderly man quickly responds in a curt demeanor, "I never discuss business after dinner". Robert Frost, lived from 1874 to 1963, was a poet who wrote magnificent ballads revealing the seemingly simple nature of humans in a complex manner. At the beginning of his journey,Mr. Frost started his career as an English teacher, later realizing that people needed to know what the world lays out for them as he has had experience with students and their naivety. He pronounces the similarities between desire and hatred, the effect of the choices humans make, the dreary emotions of death and much more, so that he could relate to his audience and have his words leave an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Frost applies his compassionate style towards people in his bleak ballad, Ghost House, influentially using the abstruse symbolism and depressing imagery in order to achieve a desolate tone. As the poem is depressing, the symbolism utilized throughout contributes to the effect as the speaker " dwell[ed] in a lonely house...and left no trace but the cellar walls, and a cellar in which the daylight falls " The lack of the delight from daylight and absence of a sound structure of the house symbolizes death, as the area was left in smithereens and ghosts crept the premises, conveys the depressing tone. Also, the imagery provides a clearer view of the landscape to the readers with the "ruined fences" and "grape–vine shield" that surrounds the house. The gloomy image of pure destruction displayed is desolate as the vivid image detailed description is an emphasis of the grotesque nature of the house, just like the emotions we feel when viewing a hideous sight, therefore relaying a melancholy tone. In this particular poem, the techniques Frost use assist him in creating particular tones, connecting to his sympathetic style as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

My brother and I were sitting with them at dinner one night, and we started kidding them about it. "Funny how we've never seen him, and we drive that stretch of road all the time," my brother Jim drawled."You skeptic," Teagan said, emphasizing the word as if it were a curse. "One of these days, you're gonna find out I'm right." The evening ended pleasantly, and it wasn't long before Jim and I were driving home through the crisp fall air. "Let's take Route 64," Jill said suddenly, flashing me a sideways look."Hoping to see a ghost?" I chuckled, taking the turn as she directed. "Ha!" Jim snorted derisively. He yawned and turned ... I kept looking back and forth between my brother, the ghost, and the road ahead, determined that I was not going to let the blonde–haired ghost force us into a crazy accident. I glanced toward the back seat for a moment, and the ghost laughed, a laugh that made my teeth tingle and the hairs on my neck stand up. It felt like a spider was crawling on the back of my neck. "Hail Mary, full of grace; the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus." Glancing in the mirror, I saw the ghost grimace as she recited the holy words. Then he vanished without a trace. I got us out of there much faster than the speed limit allowed. I was shaking from head to toe, and Jim was also shaking hysterically. As soon as I pulled into the driveway and turned off the car, we both ran inside as fast as we could. • 13. How Did Scrooge Change Throughout A Christmas Carol The play of A Christmas Carol is a time traveling novel written by Charles Dickens, and was adapted by Israel Horowitz. Through looking at the past, present, and future, it changed the time traveler, Ebenezer Scrooge forever. All of the great changes are made through one single Christmas Eve, where the ghost of Christmas past, present, and future visited Mr. Scrooge, offering him an opportunity to redeem himself and change his mean, miserly ways. Every ghost taught Scrooge great lessons, but the ghost of Christmas past affected Scrooge the most, and it builds up the foundation of such heartwarming change. To begin with, the ghost of Christmas past made Scrooge see a picture of love and loneliness. The first journey was to a school campus, with a lonely, solitary boy, and of course it was the young Ebenezer, without friends and without love. For the first time, Scrooge had compassion, "There was a boy singing a Christmas Carol at my door last night," he explains to the ghost. "I should like to have given him something."(Horowitz, p274) It's the love for himself that led him to think for others. Secondly, the ghost took Scrooge to a scene where his beloved sister, Fan, took him home from school. He remembered her heartwarming actions; how a little five–year–old girl made him overflow with love, and he was so touched. In ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 15. Sex and Dominance in The Ghost Road Essay Sex and Dominance in The Ghost Road Pat Barker's The Ghost Road is a masterful literary integration of sex and war. The novel's protagonist, the lascivious, bisexual Billy Prior once remarks: "Whole bloody western front's a wanker's paradise," a statement with far–reaching implications concerning aggression and eroticism (Barker 177). The novel concludes a successful trilogy, beginning with Regeneration (1991) and The Eye in the Door (1993). Winner of the prestigious Booker Prize Award in 1995, The Ghost Road delves into many standard Booker motifs, such as war, the British class system, memory, and childhood, but Barker revitalizes these worn subjects. Doctor Mather infantilizes Prior, calling him "laddie" (Barker 11). His examination by the dominating doctor reminds Prior of his childhood, and of his early sexual liaisons with men. At this early point, Barker leaves the reader in the dark as to Prior's history as a male prostitute. Clues to this history arise throughout the first half of the novel in flashes, as memories of childhood trauma. This opening scene incorporates a variety of dynamics. First, the squad of running soldiers entices Prior's sexual appetite, as do the bodies of his own men later on at the baths. This outlines the sexual and military objectification of the male physique. Second, the domineering doctor anally penetrates the passive Prior with his fingers, which Prior interprets as an intermingling of medical and sexual authority. For Prior, the line between clinical and sexual authority blurs. Later, in the baths, Prior's command authority over his naked men mixes with his desire to exercise sexual authority. Third and finally, the doctor infantilizes his patient, spurring ghostly memories of childhood sexual abuse. As steeped as this scene is in sexual innuendo, this is just the beginning; Barker's booker is overripe with sexual subtexts and Foucaultian ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Bierce was born on June 24, 1842 in Meigs County, Ohio and later moved to Indiana where he spent the remainder of his childhood. He came from an extremely large family and had 12 siblings. He served in the Civil War and had an impressive military career, eventually becoming first lieutenant. Unfortunately, he suffered from a large head wound thus ending his stint in the military. However, he previously said that his time in the military influenced his writing immensely. Bierce began writing short stories in the late 1860's and discovered he had a passion for it. Analysis Of Wilson 's ' The Pittsburgh Cycle ' Consisting of ten plays which are each dedicated to a different decade, August Wilson's The Pittsburgh Cycle sketches the African–American experience in the 20th century. As the second and fourth plays of the series, Joe Turner's Come and Gone and The Piano Lesson both explore African– American identity and inheritance in the first half of the 20th century. Wilson's two plays embody a feature different from the naturalistic or realistic plays of the Bourgeois Theatre. As is said in the American essayist Frank Rich's comment on Joe Turner's Come and Gone, "Mr. Wilson 's play is a mixture of the well–made naturalistic boardinghouse drama and the mystical, non–Western theater of ritual and metaphor" (Rich 2812), Wilson's two plays blend the realistic life with magic to evoke resonance with African–American experience and history. Inspired by Jorge Luis Borges, the Argentine writer who is thought to be a predecessor of magical realists, Wilson once explained his influence: "From Borges, those wonderful gaucho stories from which I learned that you can be specific as to a time and place and culture and still have the work resonate with the universal themes of love, honor, duty, betrayal, etc" (Hussein 30). Borges's influence is shown in Wilson's use of magic to reflect the racial and even universal experience in the individual lives in Joe Turner's Come and Gone and The Piano Lesson. Examine and compare the ways in which Pat Barker in Regeneration and Wilfred Owen in his poetry explore the nature of life in the trenches. Pat Barker and Wilfred Owen are both successful writers in delivering an insight into trench life from the perspective of a soldier, although in different ways. Owen, being a soldier himself, has had first hand experience of trench life and describes the pity of war, in that war is a waste of young, innocent lives, and the bitterness of the soldiers towards the people who do not have to fight. Owen describes how the waiting for the inevitable keeps the soldiers awake as the "night is silent" and this is worse than the noise of activity. All these soldiers have to do is wait and wonder "what are we doing here?" "But nothing happens." In the sixth stanza Owen refers to the "ghosts drag home" almost suggesting that the soldiers are alone, not even their spirits can survive the emptiness of the trenches. To begin with, the images in the poem appear to contrast with those in "Regeneration" as we see Sassoon looking forward to sleeping in "clean whit sheets," although we realise that he feels guilty that he can enjoy this luxury and his comrades cannot. He says to Graves as he is seeing him off at the station "Dottyville is almost bearable knowing you don't have to be vomited on," this gives us an insight into the physical well being of some of the soldiers. After Graves has gone Sassoon "hates everybody, giggling girls, portly middle–aged men, women whose eyes settled on his wound stripe like flies" indicating his bitterness towards anybody that didn't have to fight and especially towards people who appeared to have "done well out of the war." This is the same attitude displayed towards shirkers and pacifists. Behind the curtain of self– proclaimed righteousness, white plantation owners toiled six million slaves from dawn to dusk, inciting the fear of death as the slave's sole incentive to survive. Even after escaping the clutches of slave owners, the eternal scarring nature of that barbaric institution prevents the development of a whole, functioning person. The work uses both short explicit metaphors, as well a longer convert metaphor created by the dialogue between the speaker and an unidentified subject. De La Paz, employs subject pronouns such as you, and we, to include this unknown party into the discussion of the birds, and the morning. Just like Christ the giver seeks to give those he takes care of as much as possible. The omnipotent narrator has to advise his son, "Don't ask for more bread/ The world is in a haste to waken" (Lines 19–20). God who has gave humanity free will and a universe to work with, now instructs his son, not to make things easier for them. This connects to the final line of the third stanza which reads, "They want/ to eat the air and the stars they've hungered for, little razors" (Lines 16–17). The air and the stars represent the extent to which human desire extends. Christian doctrine teaches that humanities greatest desire is to live in unity with God. However, the narrator claims this is a gift which only humanity can achieve, and to do so they must awaken. Christ the giver can only give so much. The next line is the key as it reads, "Don't ask for a name/ you can surrender, for there are more ghosts to placate." (lines 20–21). The father instructs his son not to provide an explanation which will allow humans to completely understand. They are all over the world and most likely in your own home. I have had my fair share of experiences with ghost. For example I was pushed down the stairs by a ghost and or I was not being careful. I was also with by brother and we heard footsteps and laughing upstairs when nobody was home except us. My brother had heard a demon and that's why I am a firm believer of the supernatural. • 57. Deepening My Understanding of the English Language One may ask "Why do we have to attend English classes when we can already speak and write?" Well, the reason is to master the skills of writing a good argument, which we expect to learn in English classes. In our lives, everything we do comes with reasons, so that we can justify our actions. This applies to different genres of literature as well; in the ghost stories genre, authors attempt to scare, teach moral lessons or entertain through their writings. Even each ghost story has its own significant purpose. In the ghost story, "The Open Window", Saki deliberately replaces ghosts with a human character who manipulates truths in order to prove the ultimate danger of the unpredictability of human behavior. In a ghost story, readers would expect the presence of a ghost. According to Cox and Gilbert, the dead will never go away and they remain as ghosts; the most effective way of accommodating the ghosts is to encapsulate them in stories (The Oxford Book of English Ghost Stories ix). This affirms the point that there will be ghosts in ghost stories, as readers will be anticipating its presence. In "The Open Window", the reader's anticipation slowly builds through a thorough description of the apparent tragedy, characters' reactions and most importantly, the explanation of how "in the deepening twilight three figures were walking across the lawn towards the window" (596); the readers are expecting the appearance of a ghost. However, Saki deliberately replaces the ghosts with a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Great Divorce Passage Analysis In The Great Divorce, Lewis uses the conversation with the murderer and the innocent bystander to illustrate that those who end up in hell are those who desire justice over mercy. In the story, the "decent chap" believes that his life on earth merited him heaven, and he is confused as to why the murderer got into heaven. He believed that he could earn his way into heaven through his works: through justice. This ghost saw the offer of salvation through repentance as charity. Since he believed salvation came through his works, he refused to accept salvation as a gift. This ghost prided himself on his own works, and this led him to damnation. He cried, "I came here to get my rights, see? Not to go sniveling along on charity tied onto you apron–strings" ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The criteria that needs to be considered for the winning novel, includes a wide variety of theories, debates and critical writings that together will give an informed and balanced decision. An instinctive judgment would be to view the book cover and the précis of the plot; and then from a personal perspective ask if it would be likely to entice the reader. However, this narrows ones thought process; also an instinctive judgement is based on ones past personal experience, which will ensure that each reader would then have a different view. Wisconsin doesn't just have haunted houses. On a country road in Elkhorn, Wisconsin, many have reported witnessing a creature that has the same characteristics as what we would call a werewolf. Eventually, the creature was named the "Beast of Bray Road." This creature is also considered the "Werewolf of Wisconsin." One of the first sightings was in 1936 by Mark Schackelman. According to Linda S. Godfrey in her book, The Beast of Bray Road: Tailing Wisconsin's Werewolf, Schackelman "encountered a strange creature on the St. Colletta's grounds at midnight on two separate nights. The first night, he found the creature kneeling atop a Native American burial mound. The strange, upright being appeared to be clawing the ground but fled when the watchman approached" (24). The beast supposedly has the body of a man covered in fur and the head of a wolf with pointed ears. Some claim to have photos of it as evidence but many don't believe that those photos are real. • 67. The Myrtles Plantation : A Site Of Dehumanization The Myrtles Plantation can be understood as a site of dehumanization. It is located in St. Francisville, Louisiana. David Bradford built the plantation in 1794 on an ancient Tunica Indian burial gound (The Moonlight Road). After his death, the property was passed down to different family members and own by various other families (The Myrtles Plantation). The house is rumoured to be the site for more than 10 murders and suicides and at least 12 ghosts (The Myrtles Plantation). The plantation was built on an ancient Indigenous burial land and it was home to a number of different families who owned Black slaves. Thus, the plantation is haunted not only by instances of terror, but is also haunted by these histories of violence. The house and property conjures feelings of hate, disrespect and the belittling of others. From the hanging of Black slaves to the mysterious murders and happenings of the house, The Myrtles Plantation invokes feelings of unresolved social and economic violence. The haunting of The Myrtles Planation does not simply refer to the unrest of certain sprits but rather it is haunted by the inherent dehumanization of certain bodies on the basis of race, gender, and class. Thus, this paper will be an analysis of The Myrtles Planation as a haunted house. It will prove that The Myrtles Plantation is haunted by the histories of violence and oppression that occurred within the space, which manifests through ghosts and sprits that are eternally subjected to unrest due ... The video consists of supposedly "recovered footage" found at the scene of a fatal car accident, near Sintra, Portugal. In the video, a woman and two young men are shown taking a car trip to the mountains. One passenger records the trip with a video camera. While driving along the road, the travelers spot a strange female hitchhiker, whom they pick up. The passenger with the camera focuses on the hitchhiker, who seems strangely quiet, but says her name is Teresa, and states that she has not been the same since her accident. She then points out a spot on the road where she says she died. She suddenly turns to the camera and screams, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 75. The Ghost Road War 'Writing about conflict allows a writer to consider many other issues, often subverting the idea that war is only about death and destruction'. Wilfred Owen wrote, "All poets must be truthful" and further to that, "all poets can do is warn" suggesting that writing about conflict does allow writers to consider many other issues as each writer must be truthful about their own experiences and understandings. This brings in concepts of psychology, sexuality and power that are all prevalent within every aspect of war and so is subverting the idea that war is only about death and destruction. However, it can be argued that every aspect of war, whilst potentially seeming different and seeming from different viewpoints, does eventually lead to death ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Neither the war, nor the associating aspects are portrayed in a positive light. The reader is presented with the realities of war and whilst they may be power based realities, stemming from an outdated instinct for men to prove themselves as men, they result in death and distraction. In the poem "American Football' by Harold Pinter, the poetic voice carries out profanities, exclaiming, 'We blew the shit out of them,' using scatalogical imagery to emphasise the disregard for human life, instead focusing on the power and thrill of 'winning'. However, the most powerful line of the poem the last, where the poetic voice demands, 'Now I want you to come over here and kiss me on the mouth.' The contrast between the previous tone of the poem and the sudden demand for such an intimate action is even stringer, in that there is no recognition of the difference at any point in the poem. It is a clear demonstration of the effects of war upon an individuals mentality and psychological stability, showing how the power violence that is an inherent part of war has an addictive quality that leaves soldiers unable to settle into a civilian lifestyle and often being violent to those around them, creating continuous distraction even after the war is ... He is also an historian, story teller, geologist, chemist and licensed blaster. He speaks of the people who inhabited this place as if he'd known them all personally, which due to the eerie nature of this town, he might well have. Robert is in the process of putting together a book on the history of the town. Hopefully it will be available before long, as just the few stories he told us made me want to learn more. On a late April day, snow still thick on the high peaks, I joined the Eastern Sierra 4X4 Club for a trip up the rugged, steep dirt road to Cerro Gordo. We drove south out of Bishop, known as the "Little Town with a Big Back Yard," and headed south to Lone Pine, where we picked up the 136, the road over to Death Valley. Just past the fading town of Keeler, we turned left and abandoned the highway for a dirt road that wound up eight miles to this historic mining town. Bishop indeed has a very big back yard. It was clear, long before reaching our destination, that my two wheel drive car wouldn't have made it, particularly on a steep section with loose rock. A good SUV with fairly high clearance would do just fine in dry weather. A four wheel vehicle could continue on the White Mountain Talc Road, which runs along the ridge and is supposed to return to the 395 at some distance north, but don't take my word on that before heading out. Cerro Gordo was considered ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
