Copland
Copland wrote a ballet about one of the most famous "western gangsters" in history: Billy the Kid.
The work was written in 1938 and remained popular for over a decade. Unfortunately, his works are
no longer heard or performed often enough today. In my opinion, Copland is one of the greatest
American performers in music history, but he is not given the recognition he deserves by today's
society. By looking at Copland's works and analyzing his "Billy the Kid," the necessary proof of his
greatness will, without question, show the fact that he is one of the greatest American composers of
all time.

Finally his studies led him to France at the age of 21, where he studied under Paul Vidal for a short
period of time and then under Mlle. Boulanger for three years. Before returning to America, in 1924,
Mlle. Nadia Boulanger asked Mr. Copland to write her a piece to perform on an American tour. He
accepted and wrote "Symphony for organ and orchestra, with Walter Camrosch as conductor and
Nadia Boulanger as soloist...." Also during this time, he wrote The Cat and the Mouse and a
Passacaglia which "made him known to a large and influential public and definitely established his
position in American musical life."
His musical career took off from there with invitations to write original pieces for concerts, tours,
and such groups as the Boston Symphony. In 1938, Copland wrote a ballet about William Bonney.
William grew up in Brooklyn, New York, Aaron's hometown. At the age of 12 he saw his mother
shot by a wayward bullet during a street brawl. Following this he stabbed the man responsible for
his mother's death. This is the first of several murders William commits. Later in life he is accused
of cheating during a card game and kills the accuser. Finally, he is captured after a showdown and
jailed. To flee from prison, he slayed his jailer and escaped.

Gabriel Fauré was a French composer, educator, pianist, and organist, born in Pamiers, Ariège in
1845. As a young child, Fauré spent hours at the harmonium and showed a talent for music. He
attended the Ecole Niedermeyer [at the time it was just established by Louis Niedermeyer and was
called the Ecole de Musique Classique et Religieuse] beginning in October of 1854 and stayed for
the next 11 years. While Fauré was there, Louis Niedermeyer died and his piano class was taken by
Saint–Saëns, who introduced Fauré and his classmates to contemporary music composers including

Some of his best known works include his opera Pénélope, (1907–1913) and his Requiem (1877–
1890). His style, as mentioned above, was a balance between classical and romantic, with each
taking more dominant roles in varying periods. In general, it his style was described as "..delicate

Only one man could claim the title as probably the greatest composer in American history for

His first major work upon returning to America was "Symphony for Organ and Orchestra" which he
wrote just for the few performances of Nadia Boulanger; the first one in Carnegie Hall in 1925 and
another in Boston. As the twenties roared on, Copland began to show how his musical career would
truly follow the ever–changing style of America. During the 1920's, Aaron Copland went with the
trend and experimented with jazz styles in his music, which proved to be extraordinary in the views
of many. His choice for other pieces came through modern music about which he once said, "I just
happened upon it in the natural course of my musical exploration." This was apparent in the way he
would use ideals of Neoclassicism in his "Piano Variations." Copland then hit a downfall in about
1936. He wrote a few works which were harder to perform and not taken in by many audiences due
to the use of much more advanced techniques which were uncommon for the time. Copland knew a
change had to be made because he quickly saw how many composers were working themselves into
a vacuum, so he would follow a new path of the more simplistic American way for much of his life.

Music underwent a plethora of changes throughout the twentieth century, including a complete
transformation from the large symphonic works of the late 1800s to the short, electronic ditties of
the late 1900s. With all that change, choosing only three composers to represent the entire twentieth
century would be impossible. For example, the innovation of electronic music added an entirely new
genre to the world of classical music; however, the three composers discussed here did not write in
that style and instead influenced other aspects of the music world. Arnold Schoenberg, Aaron

Throughout the early twentieth century, music began to take on a new role as society started to
progress and change. In society, music is an important part of culture and the forming of culture,
where people can assert and preserve their histories and experiences when facing a change in social
conditions. Modernism is defying convention to an extreme degree, disregarding boundaries
completely in rhythm and tonality, opening up doors that would eventually redefine the notion of
what constitutes music. America and Europe, pre and post WWI, both experienced drastic social
changes and technological advances which all contributed to the progression of modernism in

culture in Europe, and even the shared rise popularity in folk music in both countries, modernism

The article "The effects of music on achievement, attitude and retention in primary school English
lessons" by Koksal, Yagisan, and Cekic show the impact music has in the classroom. The Article
claims "best learning environment is one that includes music" (Köksal, et al. 1897). Meaning music
activates different parts of the brain that coincide with memory. Through an experimental study
mentioned in the article shows music has a "increased achievement in English vocabulary learning"
(Köksal, et al. 1899). Memory channels are activated and students are able to retain what is being
taught through the use of music. Therefore the article suggests music is a method that can be used in
primary schools to exercise the mind helping students hold onto what they learn for longer periods
of time. The authors argue music brings out a different level of intelligence in the classroom.
However the article fails to briefly describe traditional methods, other possible methods, and
possible defaults of a music learning environment jeopardizing a overall well conducted study of

The tune was hot and enthusiastic and shown dialogue without using any words. The ensemble
played this piece by Cassia Lee supplied the drawn–out conversation that sounded like twirling and
dancing in the moonlight with the solo as well as steadiness. This tune reminded me of "My Heart
Will Go On" in that a story is told of the instrumental nature of it, just as much as when the lyrics
are being sung by Celine Dion. I found listening to this tune a rewarding experience, and it turned
out to be a wonderful start to the jazz concert in that it was not unfamiliar to the crowd. "Waltz for
Debby' got me question why someone would write this kind of old and whom Debby was –sounding
tune for someone he or she loved. It 's really difficult for me to advocate this song to anybody, for I
lacked the depth of the other tunes through the entire evening and believed it was boring. "Ancient
Memories" was a piece that is wonderful. The tune was enjoyment and I loved listening to the
changes over and over again, although the tune had lots of repetition. The Jazz Ensemble concert at
Tarleton was an enjoyable evening full of intellectually exciting encounters of music and excellent
music that I wouldn 't have listened to if not for this duty. Diversification is an important lesson to
learn when seeing music because all music has roots from a different music genre and understanding
this makes you more diversified as somebody.

Concerts at Colburn" hosted by Gibson Dunn. Gibson Dunn is a prominent law firm whose active
involvement in the community expands to all various arenas of the society through their leadership
and services. Rush Hour Concert is held monthly at Thayer Hall in Colburn School located at 200

This piece evoked an uncomfortable feeling inside me, sort of giving a music background to my

  • 1. Copland Essay Copland Copland wrote a ballet about one of the most famous "western gangsters" in history: Billy the Kid. The work was written in 1938 and remained popular for over a decade. Unfortunately, his works are no longer heard or performed often enough today. In my opinion, Copland is one of the greatest American performers in music history, but he is not given the recognition he deserves by today's society. Before returning to America, in 1924, Mlle. Nadia Boulanger asked Mr. Copland to write her a piece to perform on an American tour.
