  2. 2. Front Cover As you can see the top of my front cover (masthead, slogan and the banner across the top) I have used a similar layout to the Kerrang magazine. I like the idea of the Masthead dominating the top of the page to make it recognisable to the audience. I found when doing my research into other magazines that although the layout is conventional like the medium shot photo dominating the page the and the large masthead at the top I chose unconventional designs. Using Arrows in the background and as backgrounds for the text I found was quite unique. Another item I found unique with my cover is that I have chose to us a dark background with a vibrant picture. This contrast I believe works well but when looking at existing products they used wither Dec ’09 £2.99 As you can see I have added a barcode to the side of the magazine. I have also added the price and date for future reference and for the ease to the reader.
  3. 3. Contents Page As you can see my contents page compared to the Kerrang one above is very unconventional. I found when looking at the conventional layout for a contents page to be boring so I found using unique shapes (arrows) and putting the images on an angle to be more ‘exciting’ so to say. I also chose to use the arrows to stick with the theme that I have used as t he back ground. Using one main image on the page I found drew the readers eyes to the main article for the main story rather than them looking at the less important stories. Having a large image on the page also makes peop le want to see what the article is about. I found that other magazines such as Kerrang only used images around the outside or the page making it seem like a border. I found this to be slightly dull and boring and decided to challenge the conventional layout by have just a bold picture of a person in the middle. I found that this actually worked quite well. The background once again I chose to make the greyscale colours like on the front cover. When looking at other music magazines they either used the photo’s own background as the background for the magazine or they used a bright or similar colour to what was in the picture. I think my idea of making the background dull works well with my images as the images I have chosen to use are vibrant colours which contrast with the b ackgro und.
  4. 4. Double Page I believe that for my double page spread I have used a more conventional layout. Having one large image on one side of the page and having the information on the other is what I found to be the standard layout for the majority of the double page spreads I found. If you look at the existing product to the left you can see that there is no link between the two pages. I found that with this existing double page it worked but when I tried this I thought that it didn’t look right for my double page. I linked up the two pages by adding a quote from the article to it and also arrows which point to the picture. I decided that I would have one large extreme close up of a person as the main image on the page. This was because I found it worked with the article name of ‘It’s all about Ash…’ as the page is dominated by the picture and is all about Ash. Once again I used very colourful pictures on the dark background. This made the images stand out from the page and make them the main focus.
  5. 5. Overall <ul><li>I believe I have used a very conventional layout but the designs on the page are extremely unconventional. This I found worked when experimenting with my products but I think that in general this might not. </li></ul><ul><li>I have use bright colourful images that contrast against the dark background. This might help to catch the readers eye. </li></ul><ul><li>By using a running theme with the arrows and the colours makes the magazine/products recognisable. </li></ul>
  6. 6. How does your media product represent particular social groups? <ul><li>My images that I have chosen to use seem rather stereotypical of the younger generation. I have tried to make the person in the photo keep a straight face. This was to represent that the fame has not got to ‘Ash’. I found that the products I have created appeal more to the Male’s rather than the females. When asking people why they thought it appealed more to Male’s they said it was because of the dark background on the Front cover and Contents page. The colours used on the images are rather stereotypical colours of the male generation (ie: Blue, Black). </li></ul><ul><li>Fonts used on the products are very bold and sharp. The edges of the masthead fonts I have given a white outline to create more of an impact on the read and draw there attention to it. </li></ul><ul><li>The clothes worn in the photo’s (i.e hoodies and the striped glasses) and also quite stereotypical of the teenage generation. This I thought might help to attract the reads I want. </li></ul>
  7. 7. What kind of Media institution might distribute my media product? <ul><li>I believe that my Music Magazine could be promoted through social networking sites. Most 15 – 30 Year olds either use one of the most popular social networking sites; Facebook or other alternative’s such as Myspace, Twitter or Bebo depending on the target market. All three websites offer advertising of some description and Myspace in particular like to promote up and coming bands or artists which could be good for a magazine such as mine. </li></ul>
  8. 8. Distribution: Case study <ul><li>If I were to choose a distribution company to distribute my magazine I would choose MusicMags. When reading about them I found that they offer a broad selection of magazines varying from drums and strings to electronics and Keyboards. I found that some of the magazines they currently publish seem bland and boring which might not sound so good but this might help improve the sales of magazine as I like to think that it would stand out from others. </li></ul>
  9. 9. Who would be the audience for my media product? <ul><li>When doing research into the marketing of my products I found that I should aim it at the Niche Market. This means that I would aim it at a small more direct market who are interested in a particular genre of music or a specific age rather than the music market as a whole. </li></ul><ul><li>My product I have chosen to target people who are stereotyped as ‘clubbers’ and look around for the good up and coming bands or new places to go. </li></ul>
  10. 10. How did you attract/address your audience? <ul><li>Fonts </li></ul><ul><li>Kerrang’s target audience is of a similar target to mine. As you can see the fonts they have used are very untidy and of a bold, dark colouring. The untidiness can also be a symbol of the younger generation and could also be rather stereotypical. Just like Kerrang I have used a brighter colour for the slogan which stands out from the page which can help draw people to the magazine. </li></ul><ul><li>As you can see Kerrang masthead has crack like patterns on the letters which ties in with the slogan (“LIFE IS LOUD”) This would suggest that the music has maybe smashed the masthead. I have used a similar technique to Kerrang as the title of my magazine is ‘IMAPCT’ which would also suggest that the masthead has cracked with the ‘Impact’. </li></ul>
  11. 11. How did you attract/address your audience? Continued <ul><li>Advertising </li></ul><ul><li>I would advertise my products on social networking sites as when looking at them I found that they do alot for promoting new bands or up and coming artists. I did also find that when conducting some research that in the past they have promoted certain music magazines. Like I have said earlier I decided to take some idea’s from Kerrang magazine. When looking around I found that Kerrang also promote themselves on Social Networking Sites such as MySpace and Twitter. This would help to make my audience of 15 – 30 Year olds more aware of my magazine. </li></ul>
  12. 12. How did you attract/address your audience? Continued <ul><li>Images/Colours </li></ul><ul><li>As you can see below Kerrang try to keep there colour scheme the same so that nothing looks out of place on the page. I have tried to use the same idea as I think that things can look to messy and out of place on a page when too much or too many colours are there. The slogans on both Kerrang’s magazine and mine are the same as other colours on the page. On my magazine I have chosen to base my colour scheme on that used in the image on the pages. As you can see for my front cover I have mainly used the blue which helps items to stand out from the dark background. </li></ul>The images I have used on my products I have chosen to dominate the products. This I find would attract my target audience more as if it were me to buy the magazine I would be attracted to a magazine by what images are on the page

Promoting on MySpace Promoting on Twitter As you can see Kerrang use there myspace page for promotion of up ands coming issues and enable readers to subscribe for the digital copy of the Kerrang magazine every month. Ena bles ‘ followers ’ (fans or re aders of the magazine) to keep up to date with news in the up and coming issues and news about articles within the magazine. Also includes tasters (pictures, news) to encourage people to buy/subscribe to the magazine.

What have I learnt about technologies used from the constructing of my products? <ul><li>Thought the process of developing my product I used a variety of different programmes to make my 3 final products. The main programme I used was fireworks. At the start I had limited knowledge about the tools on the software and how they should be used but now I feel that my skills and knowledge of the programme has been widened. I have used tools such as the colour replacer tool. I have never used this tools before and when experimenting with it I found it to be quite useful. (Examples on the next slide). I found this tool to be useful as one of the images I had on the front cover I liked and wanted to use on my double page spread but I didn't want to use it because it would seem repetitive. So changing the colours and layout of the image made it look completely different as you can see on the next slide. </li></ul>

  16. 16. Progression from Prelim to Final Products I feel that my skills when using programmes to make the products have improved from making my prelims. When looking back at the prelims I think that look lazy and alot of improvements could be made to them. I have really used any effects on the images and none of the fonts on the front cover work together as they are all different. With my final products I have experiment more with tools I have never used before and I believe that my music magazine products look more professional. The images used on my final products look more professional and more times looks like it has been taken to make the products. Instead of just using one programme I have used multiple programmes such as Photoshop to create my products which I think also helped my products to look more professional. I ha ve learnt more about conventional and unconventional l ayouts of magazines and taken this into account which helped when making the products look more professional and this also helped when thinking about the audience to attract.
