4. Developing Forms and
Conventions: Front Cover
• The banner across the top of
the listing the different bands
is one convention that I have
replicated, an example of
where I’ve seen it is on the
Esquire Arctic Monkeys FC.
• Another Convention I have
incorporated into my work is
the bands name in big letters
across the page. This can be
seen on most front covers, for
example the Q Oasis special
edition and Mojo Stone Roses
FC.
• Another Convention I have
used is the barcode with the
issue number and price.
5. Challenging Forms and
Conventions: Front Cover
• A convention that my rough
cut challenges is the way the
masthead goes over George’s
head. This is uncommon but
something I wanted to
experiment doing as I
wanted to make my artists
seem more down to earth.
• Using a two shot for a front
cover is not really
conventional if you intend to
remove the background from
the picture. In hindsight this
may be an issue as it leaves
lots of white space which is
easily filled.
6. Developing Forms and
Conventions: Contents
• My contents page is probably the
most successful in developing
conventions. I really liked the linear
and clear design of the Q contents
page, so I took many conventions
from their house style CP.
• One convention I have followed
from Q is featuring the logo for
roots in the corner of the page next
to the contents masthead to give
the magazine a sense of harmony.
• Another convention that I have
matched is the large picture of a
featured artist in the top right with a
small text box briefly explaining who
they are and the page number of
their story.
7. Challenging Forms and
Conventions: Contents
• My contents page does not
actually challenge many
conventions at all, but one
that it does challenge is the
new album section.
• The new album section is
not something I have seen
on many contents pages
but I wanted to include it
anyways because it is quite
similar to a review section.
8. Developing Forms and
Conventions: DPS
• A convention my DPS
definitely follows is
having a large image that
takes up a large
proportion of the DPS to
attract readers attention
to the story.
• Another convention it
follows, but only really
for my genre, is having
two columns of text. This
is something that I have
noticed is quite common
in the indie/indie rock
section, as opposed to
the more conventional 3
columns.
9. Challenging Forms and
Conventions: DPS
• One convention that my DPS
does not follow is the lack of
a drop capital. This is
something I might put in
next time to make the page
more attractive.
• Another convention I missed
is a page number which I
will have to include next
time.
• Finally I have challenged the
convention of having a drop
quote and instead I have
gone for a sub-
heading/tagline in order to
attract readers. This is down
to my article being a shorter
article in order to entice
readers.
