In what ways
           does your media
FreshMix
           product use,
           develop or
           challenge forms
           and conventions
           of real media
           products?
Initially my first intentions were to base my magazine
upon the new music magazine ‘BONAFIDE’ as I was very fond
of the approach they took into launching a different type
of music magazine into the market. Throughout my
market research it became apparent that I was the target
audience of that particular magazine hence the interest
but in order to reach out to a wider target audience I
would need to implement other conventions of regular
music magazines into mine. This goes without saying that I
did base the basics and overall look and ideas on
Bonafide magazine but I decided to do exactly what they
did; and launch a new type of music magazine. My music
magazine includes similar elements of conventional
music magazines which is why I think it proved appealing
to the target audience evident in my magazine feedback
but because it is mainly based on BONAFIDE I consider it to
be a very graphical magazine which means it had a lot of
Photoshop work done and also I used the specified
amount of images BONAFIDE would use on the same ages.
Front

Cover
Similar, developing and
  challenging Conventions
• Both my front cover and other music magazines have a dominant
masthead but rather than covering the title of the magazine
partially with the image like other magazines, I decided to keep it
on top of the image as it was a new magazine and only the first issue
so it had to be clearly seen on the shelf.
• My cover has one dominant image like the other magazines and has
taken into account the rule of thirds so the image looks
aesthetically pleasing. Despite this, the pose I made the artist do in
the photograph is challenging convention as usually you can see the
artists face clearly in order to identify them but I wanted to add
something unique to this magazine and It proved successful in my
audience feedback whereby the image added a sense of mystery
which in turn drew the audience in furthermore the rule of thirds
helped make this pose look good in accordance with the magazine
which made it work as a cover.
• The magazine has one main colour of red with the two additional
colours of black and white which conventionally helps look the
magazine less cluttered. The black and white outlined parts of the
cover nicely and because red was a very strong colour it developed
• The nails of the artists match the colour scheme of the
page which draws the eyes attention to the corresponding
  parts of red.
• The sell lines are positioned in similar positions, making
use of empty space on the page whilst not interfering
  with the image.
• Rule of thirds are used and the right third contains the
main sell line as well as including the lower third for
  the main attraction.
• The name of the artist is significantly big compared to
other attractions on the cover which conventionally
draws the attention of the reader ands it further
developed by adding brief sell lines.
• Also I have used a pull out quote similar to the VIBE
magazine which is a common convention used to appeal to
the audiences curiosity into a celebrity which I further
developed by adding an ellipsis to allude to the fact
there is more context to what the quoted artist is saying.
Contents

 Page
Similar, developing and
  challenging Conventions
• Conventionally the titles to the contents page are both at the top
of the page and similar to the other magazines my title is
separated to the following text with borderlines.
• The contents is heavily based upon the BONAFIDE magazine because
in my market research the audience preferred a neat layout that
of which I have provided with a neat layout of lines with
  challenge convention.
• All the contents pages have a contrasting text and page number
colour which conventionally helps aid the reader, additionally
the main information is in bold text so it stands out against the
  following text.
• There is a similar layout between the two because they both
distinguish each pages information neatly with lines furthermore
I have developed this convention by adding ending lines to the top
and bottom of the page to make it loo more neat.
• My magazine and Q magazine also have regulars and a features
sub heading which I decided to implement to attract the wider
audience as they liked this in other magazines.
Double page

 Spread
Similar, developing and
  challenging Conventions
• I used one dominant image to spread over both two pages, similar
to some of BONAFIDE’s double page spreads
• To develop convention I added a threshold upon the image but not
just one. BONAFIDE magazine adds different effects to their images
to make them more interesting such as rendering an artist. I used
several thresholds to bring out different aspects of the image out
such as the streaks and reflection in the artists hair.
• I used a faded out rectangle similar to one of BONAFIDE’s spreads
to help make the text stand out against the background and also
  add to the look.
• Both magazines also use additional images along with the main
background images in order to portray the artists’ personality
better. To develop this convention I added photograph frames to
the images which were going to be originally white but I chose red
as it looked better and went better with the colour scheme.
• I also added a pull out quote to act like a title introduction to
the page which is a common convention for a spread furthermore
it helped fill up a bland space in the background image.
