Guidelines
1. Every 7th grader at Prairie Central Junior High
must present a RESEARCH SPEECH.
You will have class time to research and prepare
your speech, however, you will be required to
work on your speech and accompanying poster
outside of class. This is a MAJOR English grade.
2. Monday, April 23: Go over requirements and rubric and narrow
down to one topic choice (and a back-up).
Tuesday, April 24- Thursday, April 26: Go to LIBRARY for research.
1st, 4th, and 6th Hours
Monday, April 30- Friday, May 4: BACK to the Classroom:
Write speech, edit and revise, organize speech onto notecards, time
self with timer, and work on poster. Note: notecards will be provided
by me.
Monday, May 7- Friday, May 11: Deliver Speech in classroom
to class.
3. •A timely issue
•An issue which has research to include in your
speech
•An issue/person you care about
•An animal
•A disease or illness that has affected you or
your family
4. •Do not make unnecessary copies; it’s wasteful.
•Solve problems on your own. There are @25
of you; only 3 of us.
•You will be given THREE days- nothing less;
Nothing more. Any more research you need to
do in the library must be done on your time
here or your time in the local library.
5. Making time!
Your speech must be at least 5 minutes long,
BU T
no longer than 10 minutes.
Over or Under= ONE Letter Grade Deduction from your final grade of
your speech. I start timing when you start talking; I stop timing when you
stop talking.
6. Posterboard is NOT provided.
•Your poster needs to be 11 x 14 or larger. 25¢
larger
is all you need to purchase your posterboard.
•Include appropriate facts and pictures.
•Have a balance of facts and pictures.
•Make sure it is visible from a distance.
•Leave little leftover white space.
•Include a title.
•YOU WILL HAVE LITTLE CLASS TIME TO WORK
ON YOUR POSTER. YOU MUST DO MOST OF
IT OUTSIDE OF CLASS!
