Good And Bad Manners
Manners, impact our lives every moment, yet you don't realize it. When you came into this world, your parents told you "hold the door for her", "say
thank–you", "sharing is caring", or something similar. They tell you that so it looks like they raised you in the correct manner and so you can make a
good first impression. Well, let me tell you something, some people don't have act accordingly. In this essay, I will tell you how our society influences
our kids to act disrespectful and having poor manners.
You may ask, how has society influenced our children? Well, firstly society tries to tell them what is good for them and what isn't. A school has a
major influence on it. Kids nowadays are pressured to make bad decisions, for example, bad manners. Children who want to be "cool" try to do things
to be in the "cool kids group". They will try everything in their power to make the other kids notice them. But, when they are noticed and get accepted,
that's when everything goes downhill. Since they are in that group, they'll do anything to stay in that group. If that group curse, they curse, if that group
is smart–mouthed, their smart–mouthed, if they steal, so do they. Just be yourself, trust me, the world will be a better place if you be you.
Another thing that can trigger the bad manner bomb, is the internet. Yes, the internet. Even though it may sound silly, but there are cases with kids
having bad manners on there. For example, cursing. You may be thinking, "well my

The Three Reasons Of Chivalry In The Modern Society
In this technologically advanced world, there is an element that is missing. In everyday life, there used to be chivalry: holding open doors, pulling a
chair out for a woman, and even the phrase ВЁladies go first.ВЁ Chivalry is courteous acts and gallant behavior, especially toward women, also
known as the gentleman. There are very few modern gentleman and that is the problem with today's world. Not to mention, all of society has lost respect
for each other. There are three main reasons that chivalry has disappeared, the addiction to social media, the general lack of manners, and finally,
women themselves. There is no way to solve a problem that no one cares about. Unfortunately, not a whole lot of people care about chivalry, and the
basic respect for all men. Ergo, there is no guaranteed solution, but maybe if the general public agree to teach some sort of chivalrous content in public
schools, we could start something big. The first reason that there are very few gentleman left, is the fact that this generation relies so heavily on social
media. According to a study from the family technology education non–profit group, Common Sense Media, ВЁteens are spending more than one–third
of their days using media such as online video or music – nearly nine hours on average,ВЁ therefore people are distracted by their devices. Individuals
spend so much time on their phone, that they do not feel like talking to people–they would rather text. Even so, there is no worry anymore because

A Short Story Of A Ghost Story
I shall begin my story with an experience I encountered at the age of sixteen at our small town's Latin school. The sweetness of many memories from
that time still stirs and touches me with melancholy: dark and well–lit alleys, houses and factories, faces and chimes, rooms affluent and comfortable,
snug and amenable, the whole town was pregnant with secrets.
The realms of day and night, two different universes coming from two opposite poles, mingled during this time. My parents' home belonged to one
realm. This realm was familiar to me in many ways– strictness and love, model behaviour and school. This realm was thriving in clarity, brilliance and
purity, polite conversations and good manners. This was the world in which morning hymns were sung and Christmas celebrated. Straight lines and
paths led into the future: there was duty, love, forgiveness, good resolutions, wisdom and reverence. If one wanted an unsullied and ordinary life, one
made sure one was in league with this world.
The other realm, however, was completely different: it smelt different, spoke a different language, promised and demanded different things. This world
contained ghost stories, rumours of scandals and servant girls. It was dominated by a loud mixture of horrendous, intriguing, frightful, mysterious
things, including slaughterhouses and prisons, drunkards and screeching fishwives, calving cows, horse sinking to their deaths, talks of robberies,
murders and suicides. All these wild and cruel,

Speech On Good Manners
Good manners means '' a person's outward bearing or way of behaving towards others'' Manners are something used every day to make a good
impression on others and to feel good about oneself. No matter where you are – at home, work, or with friends – practicing good manners is important.
Good manners are more than opening doors and writing thank you notes. While opening doors for others and writing notes is nice, true courtesy
goes deeper. Being polite and courteous means considering how others are feeling. If you practice good manners, you are showing those around
you that you are considerate of their feelings and respectful. You are also setting standards for others' behavior and encouraging them to treat you
with similar respect. Every culture and individual may have different rules or feelings about what is polite or is not polite. The goal of this course
is to review some of the more basic and common rules of polite behavior in our society. These rules may differ from person to person or based on
situation, but there is one rule of good manners (and life, in general) that is always easy to follow – do unto others as you would have them do unto
you. Having good manners is an incredibly important life skill. Manners and etiquette for children is ranked as the most important quality to nurture in
the family home. Good Manners are essential for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

People Across The Nation By Fred Astaire
Throughout time there has been a constant ebb and flow of civilizations developing, imploding or being actively destroyed by stronger societies. From
the Renaissance to the World Wars, the existence of the human race has never been a question. Even through times of despair and prosperity, the
human race has persisted and even advanced itself. Improvements in technology, medicine, education, and communication have increased the life
capacity, expectancy, and satisfaction of people every day. However, even with these well intentioned efforts to improve thehuman race, ultimately our
humanity has been adversely affected. Instead, we are now driven by a selfish desire to advance our personal agendas and achieve celebrity status.
These misguided behaviors have become the new "norm".
Fred Astaire sums this surrender of compassion into one amazing quote: "The hardest job kids face today is learning good manners without seeing
any." Even though Astaire's statement contradicts the beliefs of many people acrossthe nation, it shows insight into the true problem. Positive social
interactions are no longer a normalized aspect of human life. While the vanishing of respect for one another has hit the mainstream more recently; the
issue has been around for multiple centuries. "This pattern and its consequences had already drawn the attention of European and American observers
by the early 19th century"" (Fass 85). Yet, we have not tried to fix the issue, but only allowed the badbehavior

Good Mannerers : Good Manners And Southern Hospitality And...
"Good Manners; Southern Hospitality and Human Decency"
Manners taught differently throughout the world. Good manners has a generalized definition, " the treatment of other people with courtesy and
politeness and showing correct public behavior" (YourDictionary). Good manners can improve any setting. No shopper enjoys witnessing children
wailing loudly about candy, launching chips from the shopping cart, or sobbing uncontrollably. Previous learning experiences have taught me that good
manners used personal knowledge from elders to act respectively with politeness in public. Drilled into my head as far back as I can remember, those
in my household taught good manners religiously; therefore, using yes ma'am, opening doors for the elderly, and dressing appropriately, manners
means a way of living. My mom taught me, manners help me in any situation. My siblings and I knew if we did not use their manners, we could not
eat. After fully learning that concept, good manners became easy to use involuntarily. Without hesitation, manners flowed like a calm river out of my
movements, language and attire. As I grew up I realized manners separated individuals,by how they received examination by authorities, equals and
strangers. The definition of good manners includes being courteous; therefore, this is helping others and taking their needs and feelings into
consideration. It does not take a substantial amount of energy nor a long time to hold a door open for a young mother holding a

Environmental Influences On Nature And Environment
Several psychologists have debated the issue of nature versus nurture for many decades. Only to arrive at one reasonable conclusion: Both genes and
the environment are important in shaping a person's behavior. However, individuals are not spared from these and are susceptible to environmental
influences. Depending on how their family is structured to how their culture is structured. Nearly every phase of an individual's life teaches a lesson on
how to adapt to the world. Parents purposely choose to teach certain ethical views or ideas to their families. These ideas are a crucial part of their
heritage or history. Environment can affect morals, etiquette, and quality of life.
The environment plays a key role in a person's morals. Morals are rules one must abide by which include, a positive sense of self, self–discipline, good
decision–making skills, and prosocial connectedness. A negative upbringing can have a consequence on these skills, such as domestic abuse in a
household, this starts to shape an individual, subsequently, this will determine what type of moral development one will have. For example, a person
exposed to domestic violence can have problems with attachment. This lack of attachment to others interferes with moral development. If an individual
lacks attachment skills to others then they find it difficult to learn love, respect, and trust for others. A person can grow to become morally bankrupt as
they live life with little regard for the values of those

Manners Changed Manners
How Manners Have Changed Over Time
As Americans, we often talk about the different changes that are taking place in our country and society. One of those changes is manners, when I was
growing up, it was very important to have manners. This was the only acceptable behavior by adults, and parents would often say, "practicing manners
outside of home was a representation of them" which made me mannerism When a person sees a child with manners, that child automatic shows their
parent's teaching. I believe, due to the rise of technology, parent's avoiding teaching their children proper manners and the lack of social skills, the use
of proper etiquette and manners is progressively fading away.
Therefore, with the rise of technology, people have adjusted manners as times have changed. Particularly in America, with all the use of the different
electronics devices such as: smart phones, smart watches, laptops, computer devices, and etc., have almost obstruct the way we once view proper
etiquette and manners. Proper etiquette like dinner table is one of those manners that have taken its turn and are almost nonexistent, due to the rise of
technology. Family once had ambitious standards when it came to sitting around the dinner table each night with their family. This was a time each
family valued and shared the important of dinner table manners to their children as a family traditional.
However, technology is a contributor in this change that family once

Even though we are in a rural area, homicides still happen around us. When investigating a homicide, it is important to look for a murder instrument.

If there was a book that had every unwritten rule in society, even the obvious ones, the book would be as big as the Bible! While some unwritten
rules are obvious or not helpful, many of the rules that aren't followed by people all the time will help that person belong in society. In the book
Blood and Belonging, the author states "To belong is to understand the tacit codes of the people you live with." It basically is saying that a person has
to follow the unwritten rules of society if they want to be treated like they belong. The unwritten rules are still helpful today and though many places
have different ones, many of them are universal.

Faculty are addressed as "Professor" (abbreviated as "Prof.").In an informal situation, westerners will introduce each other by first name, without
titles, and occasionally by just the last name. If you are introduced to somebody by first name, you can address him or her by first name the next
time you meet. The only exception would be for someone who holds an important position, such as the university president or provost. Unless they
tell you otherwise, faculty should be addressed using their title and last name (e.g., "Professor Smith"). When in doubt, use the formal manner of
address, since it is better to err on the side of formality. It is also appropriate to ask how they prefer to be addressed. Children should always address
adults in the formal fashion, using their title and last name. Another difference is about the form of addressing. From the viewpoint of
sociolinguistics, forms of addressing can serve as an indication of the relationship of power and solidarity in the society. In calling their superiors or
elders, the Chinese are accustomed to the nonreciprocal or asymmetrical addressing, in other words. They use "title +surname" to address their

Young Girl Named Scout By Harper Lee
In the past, it has been evident that the population of the Southern states had been composed of many different social classes, particularly in the
1930s. In her novel, To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee clearly depicts these social classes and illustrates how diverse they make the population of
Maycomb, a fictional town where the story takes place. The main character, a young girl named Scout, does not fully understand the concept of these
different social classes and often fails to recognize which one she belongs to. As the story progresses, it becomes known to the reader that Scout is part
of the highest social class in Maycomb. However, because of the conditions she is raised in, she does not fit in with a certain group of women that this
class is mainly composed of: the Southern belles. Throughout the story, it is evident that some Maycomb women possess the traits of a Southern Belle
persona, such as while Scout does not, due to the fact that she grows up without a mother.
The term Southern belle refers to a wealthy but well mannered young woman, often characterized by her chaste demeanor and submissive attitude, who
tries to reach perfection in almost every aspect of her life. Some of the most important elements to being a Southern belle include grace, manners,
breeding, etiquette, and demure behavior. A Southern belle should always be polite and gentle to the people around her and have the capability to
make them feel at ease with her friendliness and composure.

Etiquette In The Odyssey
Etiquette is not a term that we do not hear very often but whether or not we do, it is still incorporated into almost every aspect of our lives. To me,
etiquette is the manner in which something is done, and it should govern the way we do certain things, depending on the task at hand. It is something
like the "unspoken rules" of society which are procedures to carry out certain tasks that exist without us being conscious of their existence. Etiquette is
evident everywhere and even dates back to Ancient Greece. In Homer's Odyssey, when the Goddess of Wisdom, Athena disguises herself as a family
friend and pays a visit to Telemachus, Odysseus's son, it was shown to be that he greets Athena by shaking her right and taking her spear. That action...

After I moved to the United States in 2008, we slowly strayed away from this practice. This was mainly due to it becoming impractical to eat on
hardwood floor during the wintertime without any carpets and when it did get warmer, we were too busy exploring our new environment and eating
out to continue the practice. Eventually, the practice faded away from us. However, a rule of etiquette for eating for Muslims that my family and I
still carry with us to this day is having to eat with our right hands. This applies to all people no matter whether they are left–handed or right–handed.
This, unlike eating on the floor, is obligatory for all Muslims. This is enforced because it was originally constructed so that it may promote peace as
well as the absence of violence. This is similar to the widespread and international etiquette of usually shaking the right hand as it showed that those
who were shaking hands mean no harm or have any intention of using violence in their meeting. Similarly, the idea of eating with the left hand is
related to the usage of violence which our Prophet Muhammad directly correlates to Shaytaan (or Satan). The enforcing of this is directly in line with
an interpretation of rules of etiquette which states, "All rules of etiquette exist to promote harmony and prevent violence" as it is in agreement to the
original intent of Prophet Muhammad, who enforced this

Social Class In Great Expectations By Charles Dickens
Through the Social Class
Society has developed the concept of social class, to categorized people into different groups based on economic, political, and socio–economic status.
This concept has made it difficult for the middle and lower class to succeed. Charles Dickens had a sense of writing during the Victorian Era as it sought
to represent a large and comprehensive social world, with a variety of classes. Novels during this time were made to be realistic and Charles Dickens
excelled at doing that and exceeded expectations. One of his most famous novels, Great Expectations was set in early Victorian Era when great social
changes were sweeping the nation. Charles Dickens's Great Expectations tells the story of Pip, an English orphan who rises to wealth, deserts his true
friends, and becomes humbled by his own arrogance. This piece, and a couple other of his pieces including one of his short novels, "George
Silverman's Explanation" and a poem classifying the rich, "The Fine Old English Gentleman" developed a concept of social class. Throughout each of
the three pieces, the social class is somehow brought up, whether that being a short snippet, or the way it can change someone throughout the
classifications of the social class.
Charles Dickens's Great Expectations was during a time where great social changes were sweeping the nation. Although social class was no longer
entirely dependent on the circumstances of one's birth, the divisions between rich and poor remained nearly

Summary Of Fanny Trollope's 'The Domestic Manners Of The...
Fanny Trollope, an English novelist and writer, travelled to America in the early 19th century for a glimpse of life outside of England. In her work,
"The Domestic Manners of the Americans", Trollope captured her experience in countless opinionated, highly critical observations that judged
Americans based on their behaviors and practices. Many aspects of American life captured Trollope's attention, but these aspects were not seen in a
positive light. It was obvious through her story that Trollope did not care for the American life; however, there seemed to be much more to
Trollope's opinions besides petty distastes. Trollope found the American lifestyle repulsive because it seemed to revolve around pride in their
impolite and offensive behavior, creating an environment of arrogance and superiority over outsiders like herself. In the beginning of her stay in
America, Trollope was enjoying a cup of tea in her hotel when she was abruptly confronted by the hotel's landlord. He knocked on her door and
demanded that Trollope leave, saying "I cannot accommodate you on these terms; we have no family tea–drinkings here, and you must live either with
me or my wife, or not at all in my house" (Trollope 34). When Trollope tried to explain that she was a foreigner and unaware of American customs, the
landlord added "Our manners are very good manners, and we don't wish any changes from England" (Trollope 34). The landlord's actions were
uncalled for in Trollope's opinion; his authority and pride seemed almost comical. He was so adamant about control over the room, yet the room
itself was certainly not anything noteworthy. The room was described by Trollope as being subpar, as "it had no carpet, and was darkened by blinds
of paper" (Trollope 33). The landlord took great pride in American "manners" and seemed to think that any English practices were inferior. Ironically,
in other parts of her work, Trollope reported her experience in America to be one filled with awful–mannered people. She was disgusted with their
poor manners, like "the incessant, remorseless spitting of Americans" (Trollope 11). All of these factors combined led to her feeling totally unwelcome,
stating that "[the landlord], in truth, strongly resembled

Brown And Levinson's Model Of Politeness
1.3 Politeness
Politeness is a commonsense term which refers to as showing good manners or having respect for the feelings of others (Oxford Advanced Learner's
Dictionary, 2015). The 'social norm' view of politeness believes that a society has its own set of arbitrary rules which determine what constitutes as good
manners in any given situation. According to this view "a positive evaluation (politeness) arises when an action is in congruence with the norm, a
negative evaluation (impoliteness, rudeness) when an action is to the contrary" (Fraser, 1999).
Politeness can manifest itself in any form of behaviour and even in the absence of behaviour. For example not returning a greeting or thanking for best
wishes can be deemed as impolite. Similarly, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Its central themes are 'rationality' and 'face', which are both claimed to be universal features, that is, they are possessed by all speakers and hearers.
The idea of 'face' has been derived from the everyday terms "losing face" and "saving face". The term was first adopted by Goffman (1967 and 1971)
who used it to describe people's need to maintain a positive self–image in the presence of others. Goffman pointed out that while in real life, most
speakers try to project a positive self–image, it has also been seen that individuals tend to avoid threats to other people's self images as well. Someone
unintentionally making a faux pass in a group will be just as awkward for the others in the group as for the individual. Therefore it can also be said
that an apology can make the hearer feel as embarrassed as the transgressor. Goffman points out that people interact in a way in which they can avoid
such an embarrassment. Therefore self–image is developed and maintained with the co–operation of others through the

Pathedy Of Manners Summary
Identity Mold A black hole of conformity sucks in the meaning and worth of those who enable themselves to be molded. Everyday citizens of our
fragmented world spend hours on how they appear or how they act in order to conform to society's expectations. In "Pathedy of Manners," Ellen
Kay tells of a woman who gives up her intelligence and true relations for wealth and upper class association. However, her family deserts her and
her new identify traps her from realizing her flawed way of life. Kay effectively explores the sad and empty life of a woman who conforms to the
false values of her elite social class using imagery and irony in order to show that one loses his or her identity when conforming to other's molds.

the woman's "meanings lost in manner" (27) force her to remain "alone in brilliant circles" (28). The woman desires to find some happiness and

according to their class and rank. She meant that higher classes (who are from a good family and proper education) will automatically have good
manners. And the manners they have are bound up with the property and their class rank. In "Pride and prejudice" manners were considered as an aspect
to be learned by a society (especially the lower class) from the higher class people's expectations. However, since manners can be learned and they
can also be lacked, so it is never automatically true that a person from an upper class has good manners.
In "Pride and Prejudice", Austen shows the lack of manners and represents the false manners of people. Rank and class plays an important role for
upper class people ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Darcy presents his good manners to her. And this shows that manners are learnable and can be lacked. "His behavior so strictly alerted, what it could
mean...never in her life had she seen his manners so little dignified, never had he spoken with such gentleness." (Austen, 2009) Elizabeth clear
changes in Mr. Darcy. So this clearly shows that he (Darcy) didn't really have good manners at first though being from upper class. Darcy, Lady
Catherine and Miss Bingley despite being from a high social class they lack good manners. Miss Bingley who wants to marry Mr. Darcy is always

The analysis is based on how the divergence in European and American labour market affected the company, culture being the major factor. The
following section provides recommendations based on the problems analysed in this section.
National Culture
According to Greet Hofstade, "Culture is the collective programming of the mind distinguishing the members of one group or category of people from
others" (Hofstede, n.d.). It can be analysed from the definition that, not all groups of people are same. People of different regions–nations have
different understanding and ways of doing things that differentiates them from the other. Thus, an organization should try to adapt to the host country's
culture to ensure success. Failure to do so seizes the corporation from achieving its goals (Gudykunst, 2000).
Cultural difference is one of the major factors that affected the performance of Manners Europe. Being a United States Corporation, Manners Europe's
failure to adapt to Dutch culture led to its inefficiency. The work ethics, management style, motivational tools used were more American in nature than
Dutch. The five dimensions model proposed by Hofstede is used to understand the difference between the Dutch and the American culture.
The dimension model of Hofstede states that, there are five dimensions that make a culture different from the other:

Relationship Between Wealth And Happiness
Does wealth equal happiness?
According to the novel Great Expectation by Charles Dickens, the correlation between wealth and happiness is debatable, depending on the person
and their lifestyle. For example, Herbet viewed money as a blessing but not something that necessarily brings him happiness; however, for Pip he can
never have enough money and it is his idea of happiness. Herbert was born wealthy so in his state of mind it is casual to have exceptional amount of
money. When Pip transform to a gentleman and went from being poor to wealthy, he suddenly wants things he never wanted before. With Pip being
newly exposed to a vast amount of money, it brought him a grand amount of happiness because it is something he was not use to obtaining. ... Show

After the benefactor he lost control and waste it the second he got his hands on it. He spended all so fast and abused all that he had.
The perspective of money varies for both Herbert and Pip. The income that Herbert receives is good enough for him and even exceeds his
expectation. He feels that money does bring happiness into his life, but money is not necessary to be happy. In Pip's' perspective, money is a
pathway to greatness and is necessary in order to obtain a sense of happiness. As soon as Pip was able to get his hand on money, he took advantage
of it which caused him to experience debt. In Chapter 39 the author states, "He was a convict, a few year ago, and is a ignorant common fellow
now, for all he's lucky,' what do I say? I says to myself, 'If I ain't a gentleman, nor yet ain't got no learning, I'm the owner of such. All of you owns
stock and land; which on you owns a brought–up London gentleman?"(Dickens 78). In this scene, it portrays Magwitch to be very giving with his
money since he is Pip's' benefactor. Magwitch is giving him his money to Pip because he feel bad of what happened in the past, Pip gave his food to
Magwitch. However, Magwitch actually tries to use his money to buy the status of a "gentleman", where Pip understands that money can never
purchase the status of a gentleman. Point in the story Pip is delighted that he is a gentleman now due to his upgraded

Androcles And The Lion, Overruled, Pygmalion

Shaw, George Bernard. Androcles and the Lion, Overruled, Pygmalion. New York: Brentano, 1916. Print.
In Pygmalion, language is used as a mark of distinction between the various characters. Elizabeth desires greater language proficiency as a means to
achieve a better career. In contrast, Professor Higgins, a distinguished and scholarly gentleman who used language as a career, did not speak kindly to
others. Finally, Elizabeth's father, an eloquent garbage man, is forced into the middle class when he gives speeches. The experiences of these characters
demonstrate that language does not define one's character.

The moment he learned where his daughter was, he dashed over to see if he could sell her, claiming, "as a daughter she's not worth her keep"

It could be that this is his method of making sure that she has a stable home with success. Conversely, he could be trying to tap her later for money,
as he replies to an aghast Colonel Pickering that he "can't afford" (148), manners. Higgins, however, admires Doolittle's rhetorical skill, which is
praise indeed from the professor. Just as the professor promised his daughter, Higgins claims that he can make him a middle class man, offering him
a choice between "a seat in the cabinet and a popular pulpit in Wales" (151). Doolittle declines, however, claiming that he would not want to be a
member of the middle class and be tied with morality. Surprisingly, he also desires only five pounds, rather than ten pounds, as neither he nor his wife
would ever want to spend such a sum. As a joke, Higgins recommends Doolittle as an original

how to eat properly with knife and fork. However, young children nowadays have difficulty to actually learn how to eat in a proper manner due to

A Rhetorical Analysis Of Politeness
Politeness Politeness is the practice of good manners or etiquette in communication or behaviour. In our conversation, we practiced positive
politeness. It is defined as to establish a positive relationship between parties by respecting a person's need to be liked and understood. It could be
seen by attending to one's wants or needs. Krushka asked me if I wanted to get together. She asked me first instead of inviting me to come for the
movie. Next was by being optimistic when I asked could I bring my cousin, Rina along with us and I state out the reasons by why I want to bring her.

A rhetorical analysis shows how certain sentence and words are used. It explains how does it persuade, entertain or inform a person. In our
conversation, we had allusion which is a simple reference to something. The person does not explain in details or to what it refers. It is just a
comment and should be able to spot the allusion and understand its importance in the context. It could be seen when I asked could we all wear
same colors and Vivian answered that we should. She even said that we would look like totally spies which means wearing something that is alike
and and it looks good as well. Besides that, a rhetoric manner was used also in the conversation when Vivian has doubts on how teaching in
kindergarten would be easy. Then, I and Krushka gave explanation why was it easy for Rina to teach. It was because she was trained and was used
to her routine after some time. We said that the children look forward to go school because of the activities that is held. We managed to clear
Vivian ambiguity and she understood it. She then changed her perception. Moreover, it was also during when Krushka said that we would ask Rina
to show us how does she makes creative items and Vivian decided to drop by the crafts store to buy the items. We all agreed as we wanted to make
some creative items for Christmas. In our conversation, we manage to persuade one another on going to a certain

Clair Country Club. He taught us about the importance of table etiquette, good manners show respect for others. There are cultural differences of
course but there is a broad agreement across the world. Some people use a knife and fork one way, Americans who cut their food and use their fork
another, and Africans and Arabs who use their fingers. All traditional but perhaps not acceptable to use your own method when in another country.Table
manners are really important because you will eat in a fashion that doesn't offend. Table manners doesn't just mean how to hold a knife or fork but
how to converse and with whom, thank serving staff verbally, when you can leave the table, what to do during speeches and much more. Your
level of knowledge necessary for good table manners also vary depending on your status. Most people will enjoy a 3 or 4 course meals, but if you
are attending functions, dinners and banquets then you need to know about a whole raft of cutlery. I was actually lucky enough to be the guinea pig

another skill to add to your professional repertoire." I honestly did not believe people cared about the way I ate but he proved me wrong that

Description Of A Bedside Manner
Bedside manner is by definition, the manner that a physician assumes toward a patient. (Merriam–Webster's online dictionary, n.d.) However, it is hard
to strictly fix it into one set definition. It encompasses so many different aspects of personal human behavior, including things like attitude, kindness,
sensitivity, and compassion. Good bedside manner is the foundation to building a healthy relationship between the patient and the physician. It sets the
standard on communication between the two parties. Poor bedside manner or failure to properly establish appropriate bedside manner may result in
patients becoming distant, apprehensive, or untrusting of the physician. Bedside manner is not strictly for the benefit of the patient. (Missouri College,
2013) A large part of conveying good bedside manner is for the healthcare professional to be sure that they are able to completely understand the
patient. This goes hand in hand with favorable doctor–patient communication skills. It is crucial to maintain good bedside manner, not only to keep
therapeutics moving forward smoothly, but also to aid in the healing process. In certain studies, it is reported that more patients prefer a doctor with a
personality reflecting good bedside skills to one that might just be better at accurately diagnosing a patient. This conclusion is alarming in the fact that
more people hold more importance on simply feeling human, than being properly diagnosed. (Danny Gordon, 2014) Another reason for

Importance of Good Manners
Importance of Good Manners The larger a population grows, it seems the worse manners become. That is too bad, because in a large, busy society,
good manners become even more important. Common courtesies such as holding a door open for someone, saying "please" and "thank you," and
allowing an elderly or disabled person to go to the head of the line all make the world a nicer place to live in. Good manners do not cost anything,
and it takes little extra time to practice them. Benefits Good manners help put others at ease and therefore make social interactions more pleasant.
Simple courtesies like saying "please" and "thank you" show that you acknowledge another person as more than an object. Good manners aid

This is why poor manners can feel so offensive. It's not like a direct insult which is personal. Lack of manners offends because it's impersonal. It fails
to recognize that a two–way connection is taking place and sends the message "I am not aware of you as a person". One of the reasons traditional
courtesies may have slipped in recent years might be that we spend so much time interacting with non–human things. You don't have to ask a television
to switch channels or thank a computer for recording your files. People who neglect manners, however, do so at their social and professional peril.
Manners demonstrate an awareness of one's social environment. Even if no serious offence is taken, poor manners can still make someone appear less
engaged in what's happening around them and more caught up in their own world. In other words, good manners connect people to those around them,
poor or bad manners can cause a separation. Imagine, for example, there is a small group of loud–talking cinema–goers disrupting the film for the rest
of the audience. The auditorium is now split into an "us–and–them". Whether they're aware of it or not, the rowdy group has become isolated from the
rest of the cinema community. Good manners are a code of common practice. What constitutes good manners can differ from group to group or culture
to culture. Whatever the customs are, respecting them shows a desire

Manners Are Manners Matter
Manners Matter
People living in this era must have had an experience of people bumping into each other, and just walking away without apologizing. Some of them
are in an urgent situation and we can tolerate that there is no time to be polite but most of them, whatever they are doing, are not in a hurry. People are
usually able to judge whether the rude person was in a crucial situation. It's true that it gets really frustrating to see the impolite person walk away like
nothing happened when my feelings are hurt. It is becoming certain that manners and courtesies are disappearing at a rapid speed.
Manners have been greatly valued and judged since the ancient times, but not anymore. People who did not keep their ways to monarchs or even to
high officials were often severely punished or executed. Whenever I did something that was unmannerly, my parents punished me very harshly, usually
with a long stick that I brought home with me from camping. I always regretted that I brought that stick home. Now, that I reflect on the things that I've
done to my parents, I think they made the right choice.
Manners are important because they show love, gratitude, and respect toward another when practiced. They affect how we speak or act in a given
situation. For example, saying "thank you" or "please" suggests that the person is feeling gratitude and respect. An individual who provided help will
feel absolutely delighted and feel that is was worthwhile to give the person the help he

Rebeckha Emerson does in Time Enough For Drums by Ann Rinaldi. Becky is a truly astonishing character with her actions. She is a tory who married

The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas Analysis
The book The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, by John Boyne, explores the Holocaust from a child's viewpoint, and also investigates different characters,
personality, and beliefs. The characters Mother, Father, and Bruno are not exclusively good or bad, but are a mixture of both. Mother is a polite
woman, who realises her husband's actions are immoral, but also hides an affair from her family. Father contrasts this by being presented as bad due
to his line of work, but ultimately loves and cares for his family. Though Bruno is a child with generally well–intended mannerisms, he often has lapses
in understanding which lead to him upsetting others.
Mother is proven is one of the most complex characters in the novel, constructing her own opinions about her husband's work, but also hiding them
from her children. She presents great care in teaching her children to be polite, telling Bruno not to say "hate" (pg. 85), and scolding Gretel for
calling her brother "an idiot," (pg. 117). Mother also challenges her husband, Bruno overhearing her say "as if it's the most natural thing in the world,
it's not," (pg. 124), most likely referring to the elimination of the Jewish people. Though she stands up for her beliefs, attempts to raise her children
well, and is passionate about moving them out of Out–With, it is hinted throughout the novel that she is having an affair with Lieutenant Kotler. On
two occasions, Bruno mentions the Lieutenant "whispering alone in rooms with mother," (pg. 96 &

Changing of behavior is a serious issue in today's world. According to "Today, Courtesy Isn't Common, But Hatred Is" by L.L.Nhu, he believes
children's behaviors are changing is because the parents do not teach their children good manners. So the ways of teaching children become important
in children's development. T.T.Nhu also thought that parents should tell the mistakes that their children made in front of people, when their children

There have several stories that show what people thought of the inequality in the article "What Happen To Please And Thank You!" Some stories in

Fish Cheeks By Amy Tan
Amy Tan's short story, Fish Cheeks, outlines the general idea of self–acceptance. As the narrator, fourteen year old Tan declares her love for her
minister's son, Robert, who unlike herself, is "as white as Mary in the manger" (Tan 1). This crush is anything but healthy, primarily because Tan is
reluctant to reveal her true self to him. This hesitance she portrays is strikingly recognizable in the teenagers of today's world. Amy Tan 's story, "Fish
Cheeks," is significant to the adolescents of today 's society through the overall structure, quality, and applicability of the piece as the struggle to
accept oneself as an individual is still as present as it ever was.
As the story develops, the reader's thoughts are guided by the structure of the piece in a way that Tan is able to share an important lesson through the
form of a personal narrative. The opening text immediately introduces the narrator and her insecurities as she wishes for a "slim new American nose"
(Tan 1). The story initially takes on a negative tone as Tan proceeds to have a negative outlook throughout the entire evening. Her overwhelming
anxiety can almost be felt by the reader as she worries what Robert will think of her "noisy Chinese relatives who lacked proper American manners"
and overall "shabby Chinese Christmas" (Tan 1). With the tone set, Tan continues to amplify each dreadful detail of her family's traditionalChristmas
Eve dinner. This includes the actual meal, that of which appeared to be

Understanding The Concept Of Manners
Let's face the truth – everyone loves a well–mannered kid, but raising such a kid doesn't happen overnight. Teaching your kid the basics of manners is
a long–term process which you can start as soon as she develops language and communication skills. What manners you teach your kid at each stage
of her development will change according to her ability to understand and follow social values. Here are a few tips to help you in the process:
1. Set realistic expectations
Keep your expectations realistic. Teaching a 3–year–old kid how to stay put at the dinner table for 2 hours is nowhere close to reality. You need to
acknowledge that there are certain things your kid is not capable of doing, both psychologically and physically, at different stages. If you try to teach
her more than what she is capable of, that is not going to benefit her. Understanding the concept of manners is as important as learning to practice them.
2. Create situations
Young kids learn a lot from observation and practice. It is important that you create situations or expose your child to situations where she can
practice manners. When you teach your kid to say "hello" while answering a phone, make sure that she is presented with a few right situations to
practice it. For example, you can ask her grandparents to give a call, ask her to pick up the phone and answer it. If she doesn't practice what she
learnt, prompt her with a gentle reminder "Remember what we learnt yesterday? What should you say while

Domestic Manners Of The Americans

History 205
Dr. Katrina Anderson
May 7, 2015 Trollope, Frances Milton. Domestic Manners of the Americans. Cambridge: Cambridge UP, 2009. Print.
Domestic Manners of Americans is one of the most hard–hitting, successful novels written by Frances Trollope, displaying themes scattered throughout
the book about the United States as seen from a different perspective, from the eyes of a tourist. Frances Trollope resides from England, and in 1827
she made the decision to embark on a journey to America, to see if it really was the land of opportunity. She left with her three children and set off
leaving her normal life, and her husband, behind her. What she hoped to find in America was a new life, a new experience, and what she found was
a country that was struggling to see the incredible number of problems it held. Slavery, social injustice toward women, and the misuse of religion are
all addressed in the novel by Frances Trollope, and she refrains from censoring herself to make sure that it is evident that the United States is not the
'Land of the Free' that Americans think it is.
There were many events that occurred in Domestic Manners of Americans that stood out and showed a strong opinion of Trollope's view on them.
Frances Trollope set out on an adventure to explore America and the opportunities it holds, but her expectations were crushed when she arrived. The
early 1800s were a time of turmoil and unrest in America, not the ideal time for a tourist

Analysis Of Pygmalion And Stoppard 's Arcadia
Although all education is interrelated and can improve one's quality of life, it is up to him or her to utilize the knowledge to improve their life in both
Shaw's "Pygmalion" and Stoppard's "Arcadia," but differs in the motive seeking education, where one is to improve one's social class and life and
another is due to curiosity and fascination, respectively. In both texts, knowledge and education advanced the character's life quality to a certain limit.
In "Pygmalion," Eliza, a girl with no manners who seemingly lives on the streets seeks education in the means of language and manners in order to
sell flowers at a flower shop. In "Arcadia," Thomasina, on the other hand, seeks education in the pursuit of curiosity. Both texts depict knowledge as a
passageway for a better life but then show that it is how one utilizes the education and knowledge that determines one's quality and satisfaction with life.
Education in "Pygmalion" is depicted as a stepping stone into a better life, but it is how one puts one's knowledge to use that determines their
satisfaction with life. The main message of "Pygmalion" is appearances can be deceiving. Higgins, a high middle class man who studies phonetics––the
science of speech–– with a proper education, conveys a persona of being cold, stern, proper, conventional, and intellectual. Eliza, on the other hand,
grew up on the streets, which resulted in her hideous accent. She was "...not at all an attractive person...[She] wears a... hat... exposed to

Comedy Of Manners Analysis
The comedy of manners is a genre of comedy that became established on the English stage during the Restoration period. It can be said that the
English comedy of manners started with George Etherege, second would be William Congreve (Palmer 2). Their plays focused on the behavior of
people in a society and the feigned values that they cared about ("Comedy of Manners" 1). These men constructed realism in their plays keeping their
writings authentic and unique while also putting the comedy on stage as close to reality as possible, "to show general life of time, its movements, its
amusements, its general conceptions, were mirrored upon stage" (Dobree 26–29). They used their observations from their own life to represent the

Comedy of Manners has became well–known and grown widespread over many periods in theatre history. Most theatrical genres begins in a certain
era but spans upon many periods only if the works of later playwrights successfully tries to restore them which didn't happen a lot. English theatres
were closed down between 1642 and 1660 when Oliver Cromwell and the Puritans conquered England and there was no aristocracy. In 1660 King
Charles II took the throne and one of his first actions was to grant several key theatrical figures licenses to produce plays and breathe life into the
theatre once more.
Most of the writers wrote about things that they were passionate about or things that were popular during the time. To provide some examples,
George Etherege has been called the actual founder of English comedy of manners (Palmer 31). Etherege described himself as being "lazy" and "too
careless to be ambitious," so he decided to write plays for his own enjoyment and for entertainment (Dobree 60). Etherege wrote Sir Fopling Flutter
(1676), which is about a young aristocrat that takes place in London during the Restoration period who tries to win the affection

Good And Bad Manners

  • 1. Good And Bad Manners Manners, impact our lives every moment, yet you don't realize it. When you came into this world, your parents told you "hold the door for her", "say thank–you", "sharing is caring", or something similar. They tell you that so it looks like they raised you in the correct manner and so you can make a good first impression. Well, let me tell you something, some people don't have act accordingly. In this essay, I will tell you how our society influences our kids to act disrespectful and having poor manners. You may ask, how has society influenced our children? Well, firstly society tries to tell them what is good for them and what isn't. A school has a major influence on it. Kids nowadays are pressured to make bad decisions, for example, bad manners. Children who want to be "cool" try to do things to be in the "cool kids group". They will try everything in their power to make the other kids notice them. But, when they are noticed and get accepted, that's when everything goes downhill. Since they are in that group, they'll do anything to stay in that group. If that group curse, they curse, if that group is smart–mouthed, their smart–mouthed, if they steal, so do they. Just be yourself, trust me, the world will be a better place if you be you. Another thing that can trigger the bad manner bomb, is the internet. Yes, the internet. Even though it may sound silly, but there are cases with kids having bad manners on there. For example, cursing. You may be thinking, "well my ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. The Three Reasons Of Chivalry In The Modern Society In this technologically advanced world, there is an element that is missing. In everyday life, there used to be chivalry: holding open doors, pulling a chair out for a woman, and even the phrase ВЁladies go first.ВЁ Chivalry is courteous acts and gallant behavior, especially toward women, also known as the gentleman. There are very few modern gentleman and that is the problem with today's world. Not to mention, all of society has lost respect for each other. There are three main reasons that chivalry has disappeared, the addiction to social media, the general lack of manners, and finally, women themselves. There is no way to solve a problem that no one cares about. Unfortunately, not a whole lot of people care about chivalry, and the basic respect for all men. Ergo, there is no guaranteed solution, but maybe if the general public agree to teach some sort of chivalrous content in public schools, we could start something big. The first reason that there are very few gentleman left, is the fact that this generation relies so heavily on social media. According to a study from the family technology education non–profit group, Common Sense Media, ВЁteens are spending more than one–third of their days using media such as online video or music – nearly nine hours on average,ВЁ therefore people are distracted by their devices. Individuals spend so much time on their phone, that they do not feel like talking to people–they would rather text. Even so, there is no worry anymore because ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. A Short Story Of A Ghost Story I shall begin my story with an experience I encountered at the age of sixteen at our small town's Latin school. The sweetness of many memories from that time still stirs and touches me with melancholy: dark and well–lit alleys, houses and factories, faces and chimes, rooms affluent and comfortable, snug and amenable, the whole town was pregnant with secrets. The realms of day and night, two different universes coming from two opposite poles, mingled during this time. My parents' home belonged to one realm. This realm was familiar to me in many ways– strictness and love, model behaviour and school. This realm was thriving in clarity, brilliance and purity, polite conversations and good manners. This was the world in which morning hymns were sung and Christmas celebrated. Straight lines and paths led into the future: there was duty, love, forgiveness, good resolutions, wisdom and reverence. If one wanted an unsullied and ordinary life, one made sure one was in league with this world. The other realm, however, was completely different: it smelt different, spoke a different language, promised and demanded different things. This world contained ghost stories, rumours of scandals and servant girls. It was dominated by a loud mixture of horrendous, intriguing, frightful, mysterious things, including slaughterhouses and prisons, drunkards and screeching fishwives, calving cows, horse sinking to their deaths, talks of robberies, murders and suicides. All these wild and cruel, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Speech On Good Manners Good manners means '' a person's outward bearing or way of behaving towards others'' Manners are something used every day to make a good impression on others and to feel good about oneself. No matter where you are – at home, work, or with friends – practicing good manners is important. Good manners are more than opening doors and writing thank you notes. While opening doors for others and writing notes is nice, true courtesy goes deeper. Being polite and courteous means considering how others are feeling. If you practice good manners, you are showing those around you that you are considerate of their feelings and respectful. You are also setting standards for others' behavior and encouraging them to treat you with similar respect. Every culture and individual may have different rules or feelings about what is polite or is not polite. The goal of this course is to review some of the more basic and common rules of polite behavior in our society. These rules may differ from person to person or based on situation, but there is one rule of good manners (and life, in general) that is always easy to follow – do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Having good manners is an incredibly important life skill. Manners and etiquette for children is ranked as the most important quality to nurture in the family home. Good Manners are essential for ... • 5. People Across The Nation By Fred Astaire Throughout time there has been a constant ebb and flow of civilizations developing, imploding or being actively destroyed by stronger societies. From the Renaissance to the World Wars, the existence of the human race has never been a question. Even through times of despair and prosperity, the human race has persisted and even advanced itself. Improvements in technology, medicine, education, and communication have increased the life capacity, expectancy, and satisfaction of people every day. However, even with these well intentioned efforts to improve thehuman race, ultimately our humanity has been adversely affected. Instead, we are now driven by a selfish desire to advance our personal agendas and achieve celebrity status. These misguided behaviors have become the new "norm". Fred Astaire sums this surrender of compassion into one amazing quote: "The hardest job kids face today is learning good manners without seeing any." Even though Astaire's statement contradicts the beliefs of many people acrossthe nation, it shows insight into the true problem. Positive social interactions are no longer a normalized aspect of human life. While the vanishing of respect for one another has hit the mainstream more recently; the issue has been around for multiple centuries. "This pattern and its consequences had already drawn the attention of European and American observers by the early 19th century"" (Fass 85). Yet, we have not tried to fix the issue, but only allowed the badbehavior ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Good Mannerers : Good Manners And Southern Hospitality And... "Good Manners; Southern Hospitality and Human Decency" Manners taught differently throughout the world. Good manners has a generalized definition, " the treatment of other people with courtesy and politeness and showing correct public behavior" (YourDictionary). Good manners can improve any setting. No shopper enjoys witnessing children wailing loudly about candy, launching chips from the shopping cart, or sobbing uncontrollably. Previous learning experiences have taught me that good manners used personal knowledge from elders to act respectively with politeness in public. Drilled into my head as far back as I can remember, those in my household taught good manners religiously; therefore, using yes ma'am, opening doors for the elderly, and dressing appropriately, manners means a way of living. My mom taught me, manners help me in any situation. My siblings and I knew if we did not use their manners, we could not eat. After fully learning that concept, good manners became easy to use involuntarily. Without hesitation, manners flowed like a calm river out of my movements, language and attire. As I grew up I realized manners separated individuals,by how they received examination by authorities, equals and strangers. The definition of good manners includes being courteous; therefore, this is helping others and taking their needs and feelings into consideration. • 8. Environmental Influences On Nature And Environment Several psychologists have debated the issue of nature versus nurture for many decades. Only to arrive at one reasonable conclusion: Both genes and the environment are important in shaping a person's behavior. However, individuals are not spared from these and are susceptible to environmental influences. Depending on how their family is structured to how their culture is structured. Nearly every phase of an individual's life teaches a lesson on how to adapt to the world. Parents purposely choose to teach certain ethical views or ideas to their families. These ideas are a crucial part of their heritage or history. Environment can affect morals, etiquette, and quality of life. The environment plays a key role in a person's morals. Morals are rules one must abide by which include, a positive sense of self, self–discipline, good decision–making skills, and prosocial connectedness. A negative upbringing can have a consequence on these skills, such as domestic abuse in a household, this starts to shape an individual, subsequently, this will determine what type of moral development one will have. For example, a person exposed to domestic violence can have problems with attachment. This lack of attachment to others interferes with moral development. One of those changes is manners, when I was growing up, it was very important to have manners. This was the only acceptable behavior by adults, and parents would often say, "practicing manners outside of home was a representation of them" which made me mannerism When a person sees a child with manners, that child automatic shows their parent's teaching. I believe, due to the rise of technology, parent's avoiding teaching their children proper manners and the lack of social skills, the use of proper etiquette and manners is progressively fading away. Therefore, with the rise of technology, people have adjusted manners as times have changed. Particularly in America, with all the use of the different electronics devices such as: smart phones, smart watches, laptops, computer devices, and etc., have almost obstruct the way we once view proper etiquette and manners. Comparison Between Blood And Belonging Michael Memis October 23, 2016 English P8 If there was a book that had every unwritten rule in society, even the obvious ones, the book would be as big as the Bible! While some unwritten rules are obvious or not helpful, many of the rules that aren't followed by people all the time will help that person belong in society. In the book Blood and Belonging, the author states "To belong is to understand the tacit codes of the people you live with." The only exception would be for someone who holds an important position, such as the university president or provost. • 14. Young Girl Named Scout By Harper Lee In the past, it has been evident that the population of the Southern states had been composed of many different social classes, particularly in the 1930s. In her novel, To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee clearly depicts these social classes and illustrates how diverse they make the population of Maycomb, a fictional town where the story takes place. The main character, a young girl named Scout, does not fully understand the concept of these different social classes and often fails to recognize which one she belongs to. As the story progresses, it becomes known to the reader that Scout is part of the highest social class in Maycomb. However, because of the conditions she is raised in, she does not fit in with a certain group of women that this class is mainly composed of: the Southern belles. Throughout the story, it is evident that some Maycomb women possess the traits of a Southern Belle persona, such as while Scout does not, due to the fact that she grows up without a mother. The term Southern belle refers to a wealthy but well mannered young woman, often characterized by her chaste demeanor and submissive attitude, who tries to reach perfection in almost every aspect of her life. Some of the most important elements to being a Southern belle include grace, manners, breeding, etiquette, and demure behavior. A Southern belle should always be polite and gentle to the people around her and have the capability to make them feel at ease with her friendliness and composure. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

To me, etiquette is the manner in which something is done, and it should govern the way we do certain things, depending on the task at hand. It is something like the "unspoken rules" of society which are procedures to carry out certain tasks that exist without us being conscious of their existence. Etiquette is evident everywhere and even dates back to Ancient Greece. This was mainly due to it becoming impractical to eat on hardwood floor during the wintertime without any carpets and when it did get warmer, we were too busy exploring our new environment and eating out to continue the practice. Eventually, the practice faded away from us. However, a rule of etiquette for eating for Muslims that my family and I still carry with us to this day is having to eat with our right hands. This applies to all people no matter whether they are left–handed or right–handed. This, unlike eating on the floor, is obligatory for all Muslims. This is enforced because it was originally constructed so that it may promote peace as well as the absence of violence. This is similar to the widespread and international etiquette of usually shaking the right hand as it showed that those who were shaking hands mean no harm or have any intention of using violence in their meeting. Similarly, the idea of eating with the left hand is related to the usage of violence which our Prophet Muhammad directly correlates to Shaytaan (or Satan). • 16. Social Class In Great Expectations By Charles Dickens Through the Social Class Society has developed the concept of social class, to categorized people into different groups based on economic, political, and socio–economic status. This concept has made it difficult for the middle and lower class to succeed. Charles Dickens had a sense of writing during the Victorian Era as it sought to represent a large and comprehensive social world, with a variety of classes. Novels during this time were made to be realistic and Charles Dickens excelled at doing that and exceeded expectations. One of his most famous novels, Great Expectations was set in early Victorian Era when great social changes were sweeping the nation. Charles Dickens's Great Expectations tells the story of Pip, an English orphan who rises to wealth, deserts his true friends, and becomes humbled by his own arrogance. This piece, and a couple other of his pieces including one of his short novels, "George Silverman's Explanation" and a poem classifying the rich, "The Fine Old English Gentleman" developed a concept of social class. Throughout each of the three pieces, the social class is somehow brought up, whether that being a short snippet, or the way it can change someone throughout the classifications of the social class. • 17. Summary Of Fanny Trollope's 'The Domestic Manners Of The... Fanny Trollope, an English novelist and writer, travelled to America in the early 19th century for a glimpse of life outside of England. In her work, "The Domestic Manners of the Americans", Trollope captured her experience in countless opinionated, highly critical observations that judged Americans based on their behaviors and practices. Many aspects of American life captured Trollope's attention, but these aspects were not seen in a positive light. It was obvious through her story that Trollope did not care for the American life; however, there seemed to be much more to Trollope's opinions besides petty distastes. Trollope found the American lifestyle repulsive because it seemed to revolve around pride in their impolite and offensive behavior, creating an environment of arrogance and superiority over outsiders like herself. In the beginning of her stay in America, Trollope was enjoying a cup of tea in her hotel when she was abruptly confronted by the hotel's landlord. He knocked on her door and demanded that Trollope leave, saying "I cannot accommodate you on these terms; we have no family tea–drinkings here, and you must live either with me or my wife, or not at all in my house" (Trollope 34). When Trollope tried to explain that she was a foreigner and unaware of American customs, the landlord added "Our manners are very good manners, and we don't wish any changes from England" (Trollope 34). The landlord's actions were uncalled for in Trollope's opinion; his authority and pride seemed almost comical. He was so adamant about control over the room, yet the room itself was certainly not anything noteworthy. The room was described by Trollope as being subpar, as "it had no carpet, and was darkened by blinds of paper" (Trollope 33). The landlord took great pride in American "manners" and seemed to think that any English practices were inferior. Ironically, in other parts of her work, Trollope reported her experience in America to be one filled with awful–mannered people. She was disgusted with their poor manners, like "the incessant, remorseless spitting of Americans" (Trollope 11). Brown And Levinson's Model Of Politeness 1.3 Politeness Politeness is a commonsense term which refers to as showing good manners or having respect for the feelings of others (Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary, 2015). The 'social norm' view of politeness believes that a society has its own set of arbitrary rules which determine what constitutes as good manners in any given situation. According to this view "a positive evaluation (politeness) arises when an action is in congruence with the norm, a negative evaluation (impoliteness, rudeness) when an action is to the contrary" (Fraser, 1999). Politeness can manifest itself in any form of behaviour and even in the absence of behaviour. For example not returning a greeting or thanking for best wishes can be deemed as impolite. Similarly, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Its central themes are 'rationality' and 'face', which are both claimed to be universal features, that is, they are possessed by all speakers and hearers. The term was first adopted by Goffman (1967 and 1971) who used it to describe people's need to maintain a positive self–image in the presence of others. Goffman pointed out that while in real life, most speakers try to project a positive self–image, it has also been seen that individuals tend to avoid threats to other people's self images as well. Someone unintentionally making a faux pass in a group will be just as awkward for the others in the group as for the individual. Therefore it can also be said that an apology can make the hearer feel as embarrassed as the transgressor. According to Margetson 1980, During the Romantic period in England manners were considered to be more than just a greeting to one another. Having manners meant you were socially at a higher rank. According to In Romantic period, their character and self–presentation was main key to define their rank and manners. Jane Austen engages with this idea and talk about the importance of manners describing the way an individual character behaves according to their class and rank. She meant that higher classes (who are from a good family and proper education) will automatically have good manners. And the manners they have are bound up with the property and their class rank. In "Pride and prejudice" manners were considered as an aspect to be learned by a society (especially the lower class) from the higher class people's expectations. However, since manners can be learned and they can also be lacked, so it is never automatically true that a person from an upper class has good manners. It encompasses so many different aspects of personal human behavior, including things like attitude, kindness, sensitivity, and compassion. Good bedside manner is the foundation to building a healthy relationship between the patient and the physician. It sets the standard on communication between the two parties. Poor bedside manner or failure to properly establish appropriate bedside manner may result in patients becoming distant, apprehensive, or untrusting of the physician. Bedside manner is not strictly for the benefit of the patient. (Missouri College, 2013) A large part of conveying good bedside manner is for the healthcare professional to be sure that they are able to completely understand the patient. This goes hand in hand with favorable doctor–patient communication skills. It is crucial to maintain good bedside manner, not only to keep therapeutics moving forward smoothly, but also to aid in the healing process. In certain studies, it is reported that more patients prefer a doctor with a personality reflecting good bedside skills to one that might just be better at accurately diagnosing a patient. This conclusion is alarming in the fact that more people hold more importance on simply feeling human, than being properly diagnosed. (Danny Gordon, 2014) Another reason for ... • 30. Importance of Good Manners Importance of Good Manners The larger a population grows, it seems the worse manners become. That is too bad, because in a large, busy society, good manners become even more important. Common courtesies such as holding a door open for someone, saying "please" and "thank you," and allowing an elderly or disabled person to go to the head of the line all make the world a nicer place to live in. Good manners do not cost anything, and it takes little extra time to practice them. Benefits Good manners help put others at ease and therefore make social interactions more pleasant. It fails to recognize that a two–way connection is taking place and sends the message "I am not aware of you as a person". One of the reasons traditional courtesies may have slipped in recent years might be that we spend so much time interacting with non–human things. You don't have to ask a television to switch channels or thank a computer for recording your files. People who neglect manners, however, do so at their social and professional peril. Manners demonstrate an awareness of one's social environment. Even if no serious offence is taken, poor manners can still make someone appear less engaged in what's happening around them and more caught up in their own world. In other words, good manners connect people to those around them, poor or bad manners can cause a separation. Imagine, for example, there is a small group of loud–talking cinema–goers disrupting the film for the rest of the audience. The auditorium is now split into an "us–and–them". Whether they're aware of it or not, the rowdy group has become isolated from the rest of the cinema community. Good manners are a code of common practice. • 32. Manners Are Manners Matter Manners Matter People living in this era must have had an experience of people bumping into each other, and just walking away without apologizing. Some of them are in an urgent situation and we can tolerate that there is no time to be polite but most of them, whatever they are doing, are not in a hurry. People are usually able to judge whether the rude person was in a crucial situation. It's true that it gets really frustrating to see the impolite person walk away like nothing happened when my feelings are hurt. It is becoming certain that manners and courtesies are disappearing at a rapid speed. Manners have been greatly valued and judged since the ancient times, but not anymore. People who did not keep their ways to monarchs or even to high officials were often severely punished or executed. Whenever I did something that was unmannerly, my parents punished me very harshly, usually with a long stick that I brought home with me from camping. I always regretted that I brought that stick home. Now, that I reflect on the things that I've done to my parents, I think they made the right choice. Manners are important because they show love, gratitude, and respect toward another when practiced. They affect how we speak or act in a given situation. For example, saying "thank you" or "please" suggests that the person is feeling gratitude and respect. An individual who provided help will feel absolutely delighted and feel that is was worthwhile to give the person the help he ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 34. The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas Analysis The book The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, by John Boyne, explores the Holocaust from a child's viewpoint, and also investigates different characters, personality, and beliefs. The characters Mother, Father, and Bruno are not exclusively good or bad, but are a mixture of both. Mother is a polite woman, who realises her husband's actions are immoral, but also hides an affair from her family. Father contrasts this by being presented as bad due to his line of work, but ultimately loves and cares for his family. Though Bruno is a child with generally well–intended mannerisms, he often has lapses in understanding which lead to him upsetting others. Mother is proven is one of the most complex characters in the novel, constructing her own opinions about her husband's work, but also hiding them from her children. She presents great care in teaching her children to be polite, telling Bruno not to say "hate" (pg. 85), and scolding Gretel for calling her brother "an idiot," (pg. 117). Mother also challenges her husband, Bruno overhearing her say "as if it's the most natural thing in the world, it's not," (pg. 124), most likely referring to the elimination of the Jewish people. Though she stands up for her beliefs, attempts to raise her children well, and is passionate about moving them out of Out–With, it is hinted throughout the novel that she is having an affair with Lieutenant Kotler. On two occasions, Bruno mentions the Lieutenant "whispering alone in rooms with mother," (pg. 96 & ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

According to "Today, Courtesy Isn't Common, But Hatred Is" by L.L.Nhu, he believes children's behaviors are changing is because the parents do not teach their children good manners. So the ways of teaching children become important in children's development. T.T.Nhu also thought that parents should tell the mistakes that their children made in front of people, when their children behave badly and make mistakes. Parents should not talk about it quietly because that would not make their children realize their faults. In addition, Parents are focus on their work and do not discipline their children very well in their daily life. So, children are allowed to do anything they want, like watching TV shows. • 36. Fish Cheeks By Amy Tan Amy Tan's short story, Fish Cheeks, outlines the general idea of self–acceptance. As the narrator, fourteen year old Tan declares her love for her minister's son, Robert, who unlike herself, is "as white as Mary in the manger" (Tan 1). This crush is anything but healthy, primarily because Tan is reluctant to reveal her true self to him. This hesitance she portrays is strikingly recognizable in the teenagers of today's world. Amy Tan 's story, "Fish Cheeks," is significant to the adolescents of today 's society through the overall structure, quality, and applicability of the piece as the struggle to accept oneself as an individual is still as present as it ever was. As the story develops, the reader's thoughts are guided by the structure of the piece in a way that Tan is able to share an important lesson through the form of a personal narrative. The opening text immediately introduces the narrator and her insecurities as she wishes for a "slim new American nose" (Tan 1). The story initially takes on a negative tone as Tan proceeds to have a negative outlook throughout the entire evening. Her overwhelming anxiety can almost be felt by the reader as she worries what Robert will think of her "noisy Chinese relatives who lacked proper American manners" and overall "shabby Chinese Christmas" (Tan 1). With the tone set, Tan continues to amplify each dreadful detail of her family's traditionalChristmas Eve dinner. This includes the actual meal, that of which appeared to be ... • 37. Understanding The Concept Of Manners Let's face the truth – everyone loves a well–mannered kid, but raising such a kid doesn't happen overnight. Teaching your kid the basics of manners is a long–term process which you can start as soon as she develops language and communication skills. What manners you teach your kid at each stage of her development will change according to her ability to understand and follow social values. Here are a few tips to help you in the process: 1. Set realistic expectations Keep your expectations realistic. Teaching a 3–year–old kid how to stay put at the dinner table for 2 hours is nowhere close to reality. You need to acknowledge that there are certain things your kid is not capable of doing, both psychologically and physically, at different stages. If you try to teach her more than what she is capable of, that is not going to benefit her. Understanding the concept of manners is as important as learning to practice them. 2. Create situations Young kids learn a lot from observation and practice. It is important that you create situations or expose your child to situations where she can practice manners. When you teach your kid to say "hello" while answering a phone, make sure that she is presented with a few right situations to practice it. For example, you can ask her grandparents to give a call, ask her to pick up the phone and answer it. If she doesn't practice what she learnt, prompt her with a gentle reminder "Remember what we learnt yesterday? What should you say while ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Domestic Manners of Americans is one of the most hard–hitting, successful novels written by Frances Trollope, displaying themes scattered throughout the book about the United States as seen from a different perspective, from the eyes of a tourist. Frances Trollope resides from England, and in 1827 she made the decision to embark on a journey to America, to see if it really was the land of opportunity. She left with her three children and set off leaving her normal life, and her husband, behind her. What she hoped to find in America was a new life, a new experience, and what she found was a country that was struggling to see the incredible number of problems it held. Slavery, social injustice toward women, and the misuse of religion are all addressed in the novel by Frances Trollope, and she refrains from censoring herself to make sure that it is evident that the United States is not the 'Land of the Free' that Americans think it is. There were many events that occurred in Domestic Manners of Americans that stood out and showed a strong opinion of Trollope's view on them. Frances Trollope set out on an adventure to explore America and the opportunities it holds, but her expectations were crushed when she arrived. • 39. Analysis Of Pygmalion And Stoppard 's Arcadia Although all education is interrelated and can improve one's quality of life, it is up to him or her to utilize the knowledge to improve their life in both Shaw's "Pygmalion" and Stoppard's "Arcadia," but differs in the motive seeking education, where one is to improve one's social class and life and another is due to curiosity and fascination, respectively. In both texts, knowledge and education advanced the character's life quality to a certain limit. In "Pygmalion," Eliza, a girl with no manners who seemingly lives on the streets seeks education in the means of language and manners in order to sell flowers at a flower shop. In "Arcadia," Thomasina, on the other hand, seeks education in the pursuit of curiosity. Both texts depict knowledge as a passageway for a better life but then show that it is how one utilizes the education and knowledge that determines one's quality and satisfaction with life. Education in "Pygmalion" is depicted as a stepping stone into a better life, but it is how one puts one's knowledge to use that determines their satisfaction with life. The main message of "Pygmalion" is appearances can be deceiving. Higgins, a high middle class man who studies phonetics––the science of speech–– with a proper education, conveys a persona of being cold, stern, proper, conventional, and intellectual. Eliza, on the other hand, grew up on the streets, which resulted in her hideous accent. She was "...not at all an attractive person...[She] wears a... hat... exposed to ... • 40. Comedy Of Manners Analysis The comedy of manners is a genre of comedy that became established on the English stage during the Restoration period. It can be said that the English comedy of manners started with George Etherege, second would be William Congreve (Palmer 2). Their plays focused on the behavior of people in a society and the feigned values that they cared about ("Comedy of Manners" 1). These men constructed realism in their plays keeping their writings authentic and unique while also putting the comedy on stage as close to reality as possible, "to show general life of time, its movements, its amusements, its general conceptions, were mirrored upon stage" (Dobree 26–29). They used their observations from their own life to represent the setting, events, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The various types could be the fool, the deceiver, the hypocrite, the jealous wife, the interfering parents etc. Comedy of Manners has became well–known and grown widespread over many periods in theatre history. Most theatrical genres begins in a certain era but spans upon many periods only if the works of later playwrights successfully tries to restore them which didn't happen a lot. English theatres were closed down between 1642 and 1660 when Oliver Cromwell and the Puritans conquered England and there was no aristocracy. In 1660 King Charles II took the throne and one of his first actions was to grant several key theatrical figures licenses to produce plays and breathe life into the theatre once more. Most of the writers wrote about things that they were passionate about or things that were popular during the time. To provide some examples, George Etherege has been called the actual founder of English comedy of manners (Palmer 31). Etherege described himself as being "lazy" and "too careless to be ambitious," so he decided to write plays for his own enjoyment and for entertainment (Dobree 60).
