Photographic Practice
Selection of final images & review

2. Theme or focus of image & reasons for choice
The focus for my landscape photos was to show where
people can go and to reflect Manchester celebrating
Christmas in a positive way. For majority of my photos I have
either gone for a black and white effect or I have added a
gold tint. I have done this effect to three of my photos to try
and make Manchester look more traditional and make it
3. look like a place where we try to make everywhere look in
the festive spirit. The second of my five landscape photos
hasn’t had any drastic colour change involved, I have made
this decision because I thought the building looked festive
enough so I just used colour correction and enhanced the
reds and greens in the photograph.
Techniques used
I don’t really think I have stuck to the techniques because I
didn’t really know how to incorporate the rule of thirds and
depth of field into my photographs. When I asked people to
fill out a survey based on my questionnaire I asked whether
they think I have used rule of thirds or depth of field on my
photos and 57% of answers said that they think I have and
43% of answers said that they think I haven’t.
Strengths & suggested improvements
When I was taking my landscape photos I had some
difficulties with the settings on my camera as a result of this
the images came out looking out of focus or very bright. I
think I could avoid this problem next time if I played around
with the settings abit more. On my questionnaire I asked
what people think I could improve and some of responses
were regarding colour correction because I have used dark
colours I think it doesn’t show Manchester in a positive light.
When I asked the people from my questionnaire if they think
my photos do show Manchester in a positive light 88% said
that it does and 12% said it didn’t. I think looking at these
responses I have achieved what I set out and done.
Editing details
For majority of my photos I used a black and white feel to
them because I feel like it adds a more traditional and
artistic vibe to the photograph. When I asked the people
who did my survey which they think is the better image the
two most popular ones were black and white. I feel like if I
did my landscape shoot again I would edit all my photos to
be black and white, when I was originally editing my photos I
didn’t put them all in black and white because I thought it
would be too dark. During my editing period I used the
editing techniques called curves and threshold.
