What is thriller- zak
Film producers that promotes tension, anticipation, and
suspense is known as the thriller genre. They do this so that the
audience's mood is changed, so that there is constantly a sense
of suspense, and that the curiosity of what's to come is obvious.
Thriller films provide an adrenaline rush to viewers and are
frequently fast-paced. Thriller films rely heavily on sound and
editing. Black and white are also traditions in thrillers, as they
give the film a more dark and gloomy tone. Because thrillers use
a deeper psychological approach, lighting and shadows, as well
as mirrors and stairs, are heavily emphasized. The primary goal
of thrillers is to keep the audience on the edge of their seats and
their gaze fixed on the screen. They provide the spectator a
flood of emotions and moments.
Thriller sub-genres - Rayan
Horror thrillers are a combination of the horror and thriller genre. These focus on suspense, tension and adrenaline whilst still
putting an emphasis on fear, terror, and gore. Many thriller films tend to cross over into the horror genre and vice versa.
Science Fiction thrillers traditionally use heroes and villains as the main characters that follow some form of quest or mission to
save the world. The characters are used to create anticipation and suspense for the audience.
Action Thriller uses physical action to create suspense within the film. Like a traditional Action film, this sub-genre will often have
continuous motion and action including physical stunts, chases, fights, battles, and races. Often, these scenes will contribute to the
overall sense of danger that the protagonist is facing.
Psychological Thriller incorporates elements of drama and mystery film. The suspense in this sub-genre comes from the mind,
rather than from a psychical threat. The protagonists in Psychological Thrillers must rely on their mental resources to solve the
situation. Because of their nature, many Psychological Thrillers cross over into the Horror genre.
Mystery thriller: Most mysteries reveal a crime and then require their main characters to work backwards to figure out who
committed that crime. In a thriller, the bad guy is often established early on, and the main characters must work to stop them from
doing evil.
This was useful to research as it helped us understand what specific thriller we could base our trailer on and how to
mindmap our storyline
What is your chosen genre?
The genre we have decided to do is thriller. Types of thriller:
● A protagonist in a thriller novel frequently tries to combat a foreign force, a terrorist organization, or a cruel
villain. Espionage, financial crimes, politics, and adventure are all common themes in conflicts.
● Thrillers, in any case, have a lot on the line.
● That's why they're so thrilling.
● Thrillers are full of suspense, action, and aggressiveness, and are sometimes referred to as "heart-
pounding" or "fast-paced." These high-intensity wars are essential to a thriller tale, whether humanity is on
the line or billions of dollars are at stake.

What is film distribution? - Zain
Film distribution is the process by which the product (film, television show etc.) is released into the market; films don’t
become successful and well-known and successful by luck, it’s all up to the distributors to sell the product to television,
cinemas, airlines or any company that shows films or television shows as well as circulating and marketing the product so
that people can watch it at home via DVD, download etc. The distributors play a huge role in film production - without them,
no one would know about many great famous films today. Thriller films are always a great choice for low-budget films as
they focus on narrative.
Research methodology requires gathering relevant data from the various documents, websites, film journals from
whichever sources possible and compiling them in order to analyse the material and arrive at a more complete
understanding of movie distribution and answer following Issues:
How TV is impacting movie distribution
How online streaming eg. Youtube etc. are changing face of movie distribution
How above points can be leveraged by movie distributors to improve their distribution
Who usually distributes movies of your genre - Zak, Rayan
Film distribution is the process of launching a film and then sustaining the public's interest.

Different ways we can distribute our film - Zain
Standard distribution: in the standard process, a movie is first released through cinemas (theatrical window) then, after approximately 16 and a half
weeks, it is released into services such as DVD, after an additional number of months it is released to pay TV and online subscription sites, and
approximately two years after its theatrical release date, it is made available for ‘free to air’ TV.
Pros of standard distribution:
➢ Availability to a wide range of people.
➢ Receives its own marketing from the sites and channels airing it.
➢ Gains income from multiple platforms.
➢ Gives the impression that the film is ‘new’ for a long time.
Cons of standard distribution:
➢ People may become frustrated from it as its advertised for a long period of time.
➢ After two years, it will have little income from the public, only from TV companies airing it etc.
Theatrical distribution: theatrical distribution is often if the distributors owns theatres or film distribution networks (e.g Universal owns Odeon) or through
theatrical exhibitors and other sub-distributors. A limited distributor may deal with only particular products, such as DVD or Blu-Ray or may act in a particular
country or market.
International distribution: For international distribution you must set processes, relationships anf fulfillment in order to get your film into the overseas market.
International agents are distributors, although they do not own a single theatre, home video label or television outlet. They are essentially distributors that
license films to territory distributors (buyers).
Simultaneous release: This takes place when a movie is made available on multiple different platforms (cinema, DVD, internet) at the same time
or very little difference in timing.
Pros of simultaneous release:
➢ Consumers may choose the platform that best fit their needs.
➢ Production studios only have to run one marketing campaign for all releases.
➢ Gain income from multiple platforms.
Cons of simultaneous release:
➢ Often regarded as experimental and thus does not receive substantial investment or promotion.
“Create space”: This is a rare option, but one i came across when researching distribution. “Create Space” is a company owned by amazon, that offer film
production as DVD’s on amazon. They help you self produce your film into a DVD for less money than traditional manufacturing. They help you distribute
your film via internet retail outlets and other retailers that may be interested in your product. A drawback they have however, is that there is no guarantee
that your product will be purchased.
Non-theatrical distribution: Based on out film budget, low standard of actors, undiscovered film company, and quality of general camerawork and editing,
our product would likely be a feature film under a non theatrical distribution. It is likely that our film would never be released in cinemas and would be sent
straight to retail because of its lack of marketability, look, story or premise.
Different ways we can distribute our trailer - Zain
Social media distribution:
Pros of social media distribution Cons of social media distribution
Can reach specific audiences easier, attract desired
attention, worldwide access.
Requires the target audience to have social media and
frequently use it.
Requires little investment and yet may still be seen by
many in the public.
Unfortunately ideas and aspects of the film may easily be
stolen.
Can be shared by others, so it has infinite copies to be
repeatedly seen.
Hard to grasp attention online especially amongst all
other advertisements.
Easily modified. Provides no income.
As well as for the film itself it helps build interest in the
production crew and cast as well as distributors and
studios.
Can receive negative feedback from ‘trolls’ resulting in a
lack of hype for the film.
Available to the public 24/7 Technology can sometimes be unreliable.
Codes and conventions - Zain
Mise en scene:
Lighting and colour- the use of lighting, allows the audience to anticipate what the genre of the film is on
by how the lighting is displayed (dark and sombre atmosphere). Therefore in thriller films low key lighting
is used often as it creates a mysterious atmosphere that would give off suspense while creating tension
as the audience is unaware of what could be happening/surrounding the character. Additionally, low key
lighting creates a dark menacing atmosphere to the scene.
Settings & Props- the setting can relate to location. Where the scene is being taken place or where a
scene is set. This could be an inside or outside location. Props are objects used by the actors
performing in the film. Depending on what props are being used, it can help determine the identity of
character and also the genre in a fim. Conventionally, thrillers are set in normal everyday environments
such as houses - this is because it adds suspense to the action as the antagonist is disturbing normality.
In addition, when there is a chase scene within the film is small, confined spaces they are normally used
to signify entrapment and isolation. Furthermore, props within the scene aid with the narrative of the film
and can provide information about the characters personality. Guns are conventionally used within
thrillers to symbolise danger.
Costumes & Makeup - The use of costumes and make up make the actors appear lifelike to the
character they are playing, for example on a thriller movie there could be a clown character and to make
him more realistic they add the costume and clown makeup. Conventionally characters within Thrillers
are shown to have smart appearances which suggests the characters personality and role. However,
costumes may also highlight the differences between the character showing contrasts in their
personality which creates mystery for the audience concerning the characters personality.
Codes and conventions - Zain
Camera Work:
Thriller films conventionally adapt the use of different camera works to demonstrate immediate change in the situation. This can specifically be seen
within the thriller film ‘inception’ which uses shot types such as: Canted angle, Close up, Wide shot, Two shot and Wide shot to demonstrate different
situations. Camera work is an important aspect in a thriller film as it sets the mood for the audience, which helps build up tension so the film is more
effective.
Canted angle shot:
The canted angle shot
shows the situation as
unusual signifying that
something has happened
to change this. This type
of shot is conventional is
used to show distress, a
key theme in thrillers.
Close-up shot:
The shot shows key features of
the subject within the scene.
This is used to emphasise the
characters key details and
expressions, therefore showing
their emotions toward what is
happening.
Two Shot:
The two shot is used within
the scene in order to
establish a relationship or
connection between them.
Within the scene, it is used
to demonstrate the similar
situation the characters are
in. However, the scene
may also highlight their
differences such as
gender, age and clothing
Wide shot:
The wide shot places the subject in the middle of the
frame so that the audience is able to identify the
situation surrounding them.
Mid shot:
The mid shot allows the
audience to view the elements
of mis en scene such as
characters clothing and the
prop of the gun. Which
therefore tells the audience
what type of person the
character is.
Codes and conventions- iris, zain
Editing: Thrillers conventionally use editing techniques to increase element of suspense and tension. This can be seen through elements such as the
use of reaction shots which are designed to highlight the characters reaction when they are approached by the antagonist. Additionally, cuts always
emphasise what is happening around the situation in an alternative scene, conventionally, one scene is shown as chaotic whereas another demonstrates
calm, everyday life adding to the twists and suspense within the plot. In addition, the titles and captions on the film trailer are designed to emphasise the
narrative of the film. These create suspense and tension through their quick and catchy phrases, conventionally these also fade to black to emphasise the
scene has ended.
Titles: A lot of titles in films gives a good representation of the film itself. For example, the title of the movie IT is in red which represents blood, danger and
violence, the title is also shaped to look like there's blood dripping down to create more of an effect. Most of the time thriller movies use a lot of dark colors
and tones in the background behind the title (just like IT) to show all the types of negative emotions and themes that are portrayed in this genre. In thriller
movies it’s very rare to create a title with bright color because they create a more positive and happy mood.
Codes and conventions- Zain, iris
Sound: Thrillers feature the use of elements such as ambient sound in order to increase tension and panic to the situation. “Scream”
incorporates the use of asynchronous background through the girls screaming when the title appears which allows the audience to
immediately recognise the nature of the film genre. Additionally, voice overs on a trailer draws the audience's attention as the trailer is
directly addressing them.
Sounds in thrillers can be split in four parts:
● Music
● Sound effects
● Dialogue
● Silence
The music, or in other terms the “scare”, can be used for many purposes, such as, to set the mood and atmosphere or even to bridge
two pieces of filming together. The music that’s often used is mostly pop music or modern contemporary. Orchestral music tends to be
used a lot in horror or thriller films because of how well it creates that scary and intense atmosphere, it makes the film look more alive
too and more dramatized. For example, orchestral music is very evident in the movie Psycho, which is one of Alfred Hitchcock’s most
famous pieces. In the shower scene the whole scene is sort of elevated because of how high pitched the music could go. This is only
used to show the audience that something very shocking or scary is going to happen, most probably a jump scare to sort of prepare the
audience and let them know it’s the scary part of the scene.
Sound effects are used to make something sound real. For example, in a thriller movie they would over emphasize on the
footsteps because it was meant to create suspense and be sort of frightening. It can be laid over the movie in the editing or they
can be used in real movie time. For example in the movie IT the opening scene seems to show a storm and a lot of rain so they’d
have to use a loud sound effect for the rain to create that danger, so the audience could understand that the boy is going to be in
a lot of danger
Voice Overs can be used in two different ways. The voice over dialogue that you can hear in movies such as Shrek or Ice age, when its
cartoon characters and it’s not actually someone acting on camera and they use other peoples voices to make it sound like the animals
or Shrek is talking at a particular time. The latter is used in a way where the character tells you how he feels in a certain situation. Often
these are the most interesting parts of the movie as the audience knows exactly how a character feels, but it can also start to get boring
if it’s repetitive and too long. As well as having a narrator which is a fictional agent who tells or shows a story, be it in a film, a novel, or
a play, from inside the story. Because the narrator is part of the story, the events of the story are real for him or her, whereas they are
fictional for us. This is helpful for the audience to understand every single bit of the ongoing story so the audience doesn’t feel lost and
confused while watching a film. This is added most of the times to create an effect of suspense and excitement
Characters in thriller films - Zain
A thriller can be split into 3 sub genres; psychological, action and criminal thriller. In our movie idea, the subgenre is psychological and thriller.
However, the overlap is often found in characters that are typical of thrillers, even though their role may differ. An example of a famous psychological
thriller is “The Sixth Sense” (Dir. Shyamalan, 1999). Furthermore, “The Bourne Identity” (Dir. Liman, 2002) and “Reservoir Dogs” (Dir. Tarantino,
1992) are famous action crime thrillers respectively.
Characters in thrillers:
The innocent victim:
Each thriller requires a victim to show the
power of the antagonist. Usually these
victims are in groups, although it can be
found that a singular victim is used to show
the villain deteriorating the victims physical
or mental state.
An innocent victim is Jodie Foster’s,
played by Clarice Starling in “Silence Of
The Lambs” (Dir. Demme, 1991). The film
is primarily known as a horror but has
many psychological thriller aspects. She is
shown interrogating serial killer and
cannibal Lecter to gain information about
another character on the loose, Buffalo
Bill. In various scenes she is shown
suffering as a result of talking to him and is
clearly uncomfortable during scenes with
him.
other kinds of innocent
victims include a typical
‘chatterbox’ character,
usually a young women
or a young couple.
Criminals and convicts:
The first major threat in thriller movies are
criminals that corrupt the main character
during their time in prison or escaped
convicts that are a threat to society.
In “Silence Of The Lambs”, Anthony
Hopkins plays Hannibal Lector, a serial
killer who is in prison and is being asked to
provide information on another killer.
During scenes, in which he is being
interrogated, he seems like a dangerous
character with long takes of his crazed
face often being the main focus. He is a
threat in the film, who constantly feels to
be perpetuating danger.
These characters already connote danger
after being in prison for doing something
wrong, which aids them in appearing as
lethal to the character.
Stalkers and creepy attitudes:
In a psychological thriller, a stalker can be
the main villain and threat to the innocent
victim. Their obsessive behaviour appears
as frightening in the movie and will show
the audience who the antagonist is from
the start without the need of mass
exposition.
Sometimes the stalker does not need to
have a physical presence to be scary. A
sense of unease can be created through
mentioning of their actions or attitudes
“The Blair Witch Project” (Dir. Sanchez,
1999) is often regarded as one of the great
psychological films and it shows no
manifestation of the threat to the
characters throughout the movie.
A general tone of malice can be created
around a character through multiple film-
making methods. Long takes that continue
after the other character has started
talking, obsessive behaviour and acting
unnatural can all create this sense.
The Law:
The law, in form of the police or a
generally powerful character, is present in
thriller films - but fulfills different roles in
action and psychological thrillers.
In an action thriller, the law can often be an
antagonistic presence, They oppose the
criminal who is the main character for the
film, often fighting for a cause the audience
can support. This is seen lots in the action
thriller “Fast and Furious” series.
However, in psychological thrillers the law
can often be an end goal or protector for
the main characters. The aim is often to
call the police or be protected by them
throughout. The “Silence Of The Lambs”
shows clarice as being under constant
protection from the law.
Thriller Conventions - Costume Rayan
Costume varies across the different sub genres in a thriller. the different costumes depend on the different characters and settings in the film. For
example in an office setting a suit may be used for the costume, whereas if the film was set in a rougher area old worn clothes may be used.
Costume is important in the thriller genre because it can tell an audience a lot about a character before they even do anything. Depending on the
costume you can make a character seem richer or poor, important or an average citizen and can tell the audience what job they have too.
For example, since police are used in most crime thriller films, a police or detective costume is important. The costume must look realistic to take the
film seriously, often for a police officer this is a blue shirt of polo shirt with a navy blue vest and navy trousers. It is important that anyone with the
same role all have matching costumes in order to maintain the set look of this character. For detectives on the other hand, most of these characters
wear casual clothes and do not have to wear a uniform. However the costume must still suit the character. In the case of detectives, often a shirt and
jeans is used under a long coat or jacket, this makes the character look smart but at the same time aware of the stereotypical detective look so that
the audience are aware of who the character is through the use of the costume.
Costume is an important factor that we have to
consider when making our thriller. We now have an
idea of what our costumes could be like to give a
general view that the trailer is a reflection of a
thriller movie.

and shutter island. Harry Potter and the goblet of fire has a 88% on rotten tomatoes and an overall
audience rating summary a 4.8 out of 5. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire had the finest opening
weekend of the young wizard's career, topping the US box office and on track to break UK box office
records. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire also had the best opening weekend in UK cinema history, with
$14.3 million in three days. Warner Bros stated the film outperformed the final Star Wars film, Revenge of
the Sith, which was released earlier that year and grossed the same amount of money but across four
days. The reasons why this movie specifically stood out and presented its genre in the best way possible
is the fact that it presents the triwizard tournament which creates a mysterious environment for the
audience since each tournament was clearly hidden from the players and from us too. Action is then
presented with the return of the dark lord and Harry having to face him for the first time which made it one
of the most memorable movies in history. Shutter island is another famous movie in the genre we picked

Audience profile-zak
There is a wide variety of both genders who enjoy
mystery films, but, because we are developing a
mystery/action trailer, I will need to include individuals
who enjoy both mystery and action films. After that, I'll
mix the two to build my own target audience. Because
they will need to comprehend and figure out the plot,
action/mystery films are usually aimed at a mature
audience.Action movies are usually aimed at males as it
is stereotypically 'what guys like' this is one reason why
we have added the mystery aspect to the movie as girls
are stereotypically more intelligent and may leave them
interacted with the movie. Therefore our target audience
are both males and females.i have decided for our age
range to target 15-40 as our target audience this is
because our audience will need to be interested in both
action and mystery.
Audience: Demographics- Zain
Age: Many thriller movies are targeted
towards a 15+ audience, however,
psychological thrillers tend to be 18+
due to having many violent and sexual
scenes. They are often aimed at a
mature audience of (young) adults as it
may be too much to handle for
younger audiences. Our target
audiences age is 15-24
Gender:
When it comes to gender, there is a
close to equal amount of males and
females who watch thriller. Taking the
united states population as example,
by 2018, 84 % of the viewers were
male and 83 % were female.
Location: most thriller films are
usually set in America including
very successful ones such as the
sixth sense. This makes it more
relatable for Americans and
targeted towards them. Some
films however, have different
locations where scenes would be
set such as the movie inception. It
would have a broad target
audience such as people from
Tokyo, England, Canada and
America.
Ethnicity: Thrillers could have a specific target
audience depending on the cast (actors/actresses
in the film). People of different races may appeal to
the film, if the cast includes people of different
races.
Socio-Economic group: Thriller
does not really have a set target
audience as it is broad, however, it
may be relatable to the working
class because the people who tend
to view these films are young
adults still in education. It may also
appeal to the middle class due to
the characters portrayed in the
movies are more investigative
characters like professors or
detectives linking to the theme of
problem solving.
This gives us a greater
understanding of whom the
audience is and how we can
direct it towards them.
Audience - Psychographics - Rayan Mainstreamers:
Thriller would appeal to
this psychographics
because it is usually
broad. Thriller goes in the
top 5 most watched
genres and this would
mainly be the reason on
why most of their
audience are
mainstreamers. .
Analysis Trailer 1 - Zain
In the beginning of the trailer there are 3 opening shots with a voiceover of a character to build up the equilibrium of the story. It cuts to the
production companies of the film - by looking at who produced the film the audience is able to get an idea of what the film will be about.
Legendary Pictures often produced films with elements out of the ordinary people with an ability that others don’t have. Warner Brothers
produce blockbuster films with highly profiled actors, this shows that the actors in the film, producers and directors are credited. The High
angle shot of the girl shows that she is being taught something or introduced to something new. The next CGI long shot of the road being
uplifted and rolled over, shows that there is a fictional element to the film. A series of confusing Close up and Long Shot images all lead up
to the disruption. The pace of shots change from relatively slow paced long clips, to faster shorter ones in comparison. The drums in the
music become more prominent and the music becomes louder creating tension. Through mise-en-scene shown in the medium shots,
disruption of the film is shown. Initially there was violence but the protagonist has been separated from it, however now he is seen with a gun
that he knows how to use. This raises questions about the protagonist. The string instruments in the music become faster which causes the
tension to increase. At the start of the trailer, the two characters were shown standing close together which highlights their friendship and
closeness. However afterwards, the two characters are shown further apart and arguing which represents the change in mood and
relationship between them. There is a shift between the build up of action to the peak of action and one of the characters say “we need to
break out of here, give him the kick” this is followed by a slow motion shit where we see a man falling in a bath-tub, Throughout the trailer the
motif of water is used a lot which makes the audience think it could signify something. The use of short clips during the climax of the trailer
show that this is where the main action is taking place. Distorted shots are now also being used, which could represent a sense of
confusion and that the dream like world is starting fall apart. The sound of the girl screaming “Wake me up Wake me up” is loud and because
of the repetition it sounds extremely panicked and tense. This adds a sense of danger to the trailer as the girl is in need of help. The title of
the film appearing at the end of the trailer helps the audience remember the name of the film and therefore makes themm more inclined to go
and watch it. The background is also in the shape of a maze which could give an insight to the audience of what the films about. In addition,
the construction of the title is reflective of a maze. This is linked into the concept of the film as the protagonist struggles to differentiate
between the many ideas and the film it self includes lots of complex ideas.
Analysis Poster 1 - Zain
Low-Key lighting with dark theme in
order to fit the conventions of a
thriller film. It is also noticeably
darker around the edges so that the
audience are drawn to the characters
in the centre.
Leonardo Dicaprio - a famous A-list actor’s
name is at the top of the poster. Presenting him
as the lead actor. His name will hopefully draw
fans in to the film. He has a following of 51.1M
followers on instagram so he is well-known and
this can encourage supporters to view the film
when they see he is in it. He has also been in
famous films such as ‘Titanic’ so his name will
be familiar to many.
The bright light in the centre-
back contrasts to the darkness
on the foreground which could
foreshadow their future is not
good compared to their happier
past.
There is big bold writing in red of the title of the movie
‘Inception’ which stands out a lot compared to the other
texts. The font used is clear and sharp as well. According to
Barthes theory of color symbolism, the color red could have
been used to connote danger and violence.
There are 6 characters are all seen wearing
suits, this could suggest that they are of high
status/doing an important job. The way they
are positioned suggests they are in a team.
Suits could imply their team is formal more
than a social group of friends. Two of the
characters are also seen holding guns which
could imply they are doing something that is
dangerous.
Below the title it says ‘ From the director
of the Dark Knight’ which was a highly
rated movie so it draws in the attention of
fans of the film as a form of
advertisement. The taglines are written
small as it is not as relevant.
The slogan says “your mind is the scene of
the crime” the slogan is catchy and it is
important that they put this on the poster for
advertising purposes of the film. The slogan
involves and directly addresses the audiences
by saying “your mind” making it more
engaging.

Analysis Trailer 2 “Run” - iris
Link of the trailer that i will be analysing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Dhh7q9Us5c
In the opening scene we can see a medium close up of a woman, her eyebrows are frowned and her mouth is slightly open this could show that
she’s in shock or she’s feeling confused and worried, in the background there looks to be people standing, and in dressed in blue uniform that is
typically only worn by doctors this shows that the setting of the first scene is in a hospital room. Her hand is placed on the glass and her facial
expression changed to fear and distraught this could show to the audience that what she’s looking at is what is making her feel this way, this
could make the audience confused since they’re not able to see exactly what she’s looking at. After this the audiences confusion is gone
because there’s immediately a background voice of the woman asking “if she’s going to be okay”, then the camera slowly tilts and the audience
can clearly see, this is about a mother who gave birth and is unsure if her baby will survive. A shallow focus was used when showing the baby to
point out how upset the mother is as well as showing how small the baby is which in this case looks like it isn’t normal. Multiple long shots are
being used to show where the next scene could be set at. The next couple scenes is cuts of the daughter talking about how much her mother
does for her, and there’s a medium shot used to show the mother taking care of her garden, this could represent to the audience at the start that
she’s a good person, then it's being followed by a close up shot of the mother cooking, which again puts her in a good light with the audience.
Shot reverse shot of the two women talking and reassuring each other how much they care for each other which makes it look like they have a
good relationship from the outside, however the music in the background seems to be getting more and more intense, this could build up
excitement and tension with the audience or to show that the bad things will happen eventually. A close up of a few files that the daughter found,
show that her mother is keeping something from her and the audience could clearly see from the frowned eyebrows and her eyes widening that
she might’ve found something out that she wasn’t supposed to. A medium shot of the daughter using the computer is shown to show that she's
searching something up which indicates curiosity and trying to find out what is going on with her mother, lowkey lighting is used in this scene to
create a tense and disturbing atmosphere. A medium long shot is shown of the mother sitting across her daughter and watching without her
knowing, which was used to scare the audience as it’s not normal to sit in the dark and the music drops as soon as the camera shift to the
mother, this would make the audience feel very on edge and scared.
A close up shot of a container with green pills which has a huge “Run” label on it, again linking back to the name of the
actual movie and also giving the audience a sign that she's in trouble and she needs to find a way to escape. This also gives
the audience a little backstory to what is actually happening between them. A medium shot is then used to show her looking
over her shoulder with her mouth slightly open as soon as she hears her mothers voice, this shows that she's starting to
become terrified of her own mother and that she might feel that she needs to hide. This could affect the audience because
they would feel sympathy for the young girl, because she can't be living in her own house when stereotypically your home is
the safest place for you.a medium shot of her then shouting and being locked in a room, proves that she's unsafe and
trapped in her own world that is built on lakes because of her mother. A medium long shot is then shown of the young girl
“running” away from her mother which again is linking to the movie title and proving a point to the audience that all she could
do was run away. Multiple medium close up clots are shown when objects like traffic lights repeatedly flash the word “Run”
and then created with trees, this is now clearly making a statement for the audience watching that her only solution to this is
to run away from her evil mother, in order to survive. Fast cuts of the mother holding her daughter shows how in one side
she's the mother she's supposed to be, smiling and looking in her eyes and the other cut is her looking straight at her with
her eyes wide open and an angry and frustrated face. The mother then says “you figured it out” and then it immediately cuts
to a scene where the mother is trying to get on the other side of the door where her door is hiding, this shows that everything
is let out and the daughter can finally see what type of person her mother is. Towards the last scenes there's a close up of
an injection which then makes it very clear that the mother was lying about some medical issues the daughter might’ve had,
which creates curiosity within the audience to see what actually is the reason to all of this.
Analysis Poster 2 -iris The main colors that are used in this poster is
red, white and black. Red symbolizes danger
which could give the audience an insight of what
the movies theme could be about, for example
the figure on the top could be the one in danger
and the figure in the bottom creating the danger.
White symbolizes hope and purity, the figure on
the top is surrounded by white as the door frame
and so is the staircase, which could show that,
the character that is up from the staircase is pure
and the damsel in distress, trying to be saved.
The color black symbolizes evil and death, the
whole movie poster background is black which
could show that the whole movie could be a
representation of evil events that could occur
throughout the movie.
The actors are written in the bottom
in black to keep up with the dark
theme, Sarah Paulson on other
horror/thriller films which give an
idea to the audience that it could be
one of those genres.
The woman being at the bottom and the
other figure on the top could show that
she’s trying to get to the top to her and
that’s why the word “RUN” is in bold and
capital letters to point the meaning out to
the audience that she has to run away
from the woman because it looks like
she’s trying to harm her. The phrase run
is already creating a terrifying effect as
when someone comes after you and tries
to harm you, the first bodily instinct is to
run away. However the figure on the top
seems to be in a wheelchair which
contrasts the fact that she has to “run”
because she’s physically incapable of
doing that, they could’ve added this so
they could intrigue the audience to find
out more about what happens to the
character
Lionsgate films is being placed onto the movie
poster so the audience knows who is going to
distribute the film to them. This is placed more for
the overall branding. Lionsgate fans could feel
encouraged to watch this movie because they’re
favorite entertainment company is creating it, they
would then immediately assume its a good movie
The tag line is linked and strategically planned to be released on mothers day, this obviously goes goes against
traditional values of what mothers day is all about. The tag line is clearly very sarcastic and ironic since we can
already tell it’s a thriller movie, this is linking back to mothers day where kids show how much they love and
appreciate their mothers but in this case, the mother is the evil character and the child wouldn’t be thankful to be in
the position where she/he is with her mother. They could’ve added this tag line to confuse the audience and have
them wonder how a mother could harm her child, because of how mother roles are meant to be presented. The
writing is both in red to point out that the mother is the true danger.
Being or feeling paranoid is a big sign of horror or thriller
movies because the victim always feels paranoid when
someone is out to harm them. This could show to the
audience that they could feel paranoid while watching this
movie

On their bio they have a link
called hulu where the fans can
click the link and it takes them to
another social media platform
called twitter where a Live Q&A is
up and running where the cast
and filmmakers of “Run” answer
some questions and generally
speaking about what the movie is
about and other important
information the fans need to
know. This helps the audience
that are curious to understand
where this movie and idea came
from and how it was for the actors
to film it. This could help
especially if the audience wanted
to know more about the movie
after watching it.
The most recent posts are, pictures taken from
scenes in the movie which kind of go against
how the relationship between her and her
daughter and this is because of the ironic
captions used. (see next slide)
They also have their reels
that were posted on their
story and then put on
they’re highlights. Using
highlights on instagram is
something useful for movie
accounts like this because
its a way of keeping
information there for the
fans to see and comment
to, for example in this case
the reels are showing how
the fans interacted with the
movie and made small skits
and recreating some movie
scenes which shows that
they do care about the
audience because they are
sharing with the public fan
videos. This could
encourage them to watch
the movie and create their
own impressinations
On their bio again, they seem to have a hashtag that once the fans can
click on it takes them to posts that have been posted under that
hashtag, they can there see posts about the movie. This also shows the
fans they can use that hashtag if they would like to post about it. As well
as letting the audience know that if they would like to watch this movie
they could click on the hulu link and watch it there. They placed it there
so their able to get more views on their movie and faster.

These are some of the most recent posts on their instagram page, the captions are again linking to
the poster where they kept on mentioning mothers day and how its very ironic and sarcastic because
the mother clearly goes against what a mother should be like with her child. The most on the right is
also ironic because it shows the mother comforting her daughter when in reality she’s the problem.
You can see it from her facial expressions that she’s looking worried about something, could be that
her daughter might be realizing what type of person she is. These posts give a small insight of what
the movie will be like. The caption of the picture on the left shows that the picture is symbolizing how
she’s looking out if her mom notices her, shows she’s not a good person. As well as putting the
hashtag of the movie where all the posts about the movie are placed.
Analysis Trailer 3- zak
A film trailer objective is to promote and attract an audience. They're also meant to give the
audience a taste of what's at the taste of the movie. Through strategies such as music and
images aimed at specific genres, age groups, and more, a good trailer will attract the right
target audience.
The titles
The Shutter Island film trailer titles are simple, with a plain white font on a black background.
This gives the trailer a mysterious tone because it doesn't seem to reveal anything, which is
a frequent thriller technique. This is also suggested by the gloomy colors. The director,
Martin Scorsese, is introduced first, followed by the main character, Leonardo Dicaprio, who
appears as an overlay title. This appeals to the audience because both are well-known for
producing excellent movies. The term "Shutter Island" appears on screen in a huge font and
fades out after a few seconds, accompanied by strong music that slows down. This creates
a sense of discomfort at the end of the trailer, encouraging viewers to want to see and learn
more. The contrast between black and white suggests a binary opposition of good and evil,
which is a typical thriller theme.
Characters - zak
The film includes a strong cast, including Leonardo Dicaprio, Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley, and
others, who are all feature in the teaser. This helps to draw in a large audience because many
people will come to see the movie because of the actors. Throughout the trailer, Leonardo
Dicaprio is portrayed as a male protagonist. Propp described this character as inportant who
is usually seeking out something or someone in the plot.
Vladmir Propp's theory of character types suggested that there are 7 main
character types within every text the hero/protagonist, villain/antagonist, helper,
donor, false hero, princess and the dispatcher. The protagonist is the main character in a film and the
central one around who the story revolves. Although this person is frequently a hero in some way, they can
also take on other roles, such as victim or seeker of treasure or knowledge. Or perhaps they're all of them.
Teddy Daniels does this in his film Shutter Island. For the most part, he is depicted as the protagonist, yet
he is shown to be fighting against the danger and insanity surrounding him, which is revealed to be his
own mental illness throughout the whole film.

Location, colour and lighting -zak
Throughout the trailer, the colors are mostly dark and gloomy. This contributes to the illusion that the trailer is a
thriller by creating a suspenseful and unpleasant mood. The clips in some areas of the trailer have a minor blue
filter applied to them, making them appear cold and ominous. The usage of black and white in the names
suggests a basic contrast of good and evil. In thrillers, this is a common convention. The trailer is set on an
isolated island, which is first shown in a long shot establishing the setting. This area is intriguing because it is
obvious that no one can get out. The fog is used in the trailer's opening shots to create an unpleasant atmosphere
for the audience. moreover, there is aslo a range of low-key lighting being used through out the trailer to create
and portray a dark and suspenseful image ……. Write more
Shots and editing -zak
A variety of close-ups, establishing long shots, medium close-ups, and other shots are used in the start of the trailer. This
gives the audience a more natural view. As the trailer progresses, the pictures become more intense, with an increasing use
of close-ups and extreme close-ups. The fade to black in between most clips adds tension and suspense due to the
darkness. A couple of the cips are flashing. Because there isn't much given away, this produces an intense and unsettling
mood. The editing speed goes up throughout the trailer, building suspense. This tempo, however, pauses for a brief while in
the middle of the trailer, producing an unsettling feeling, until Leonardo Dicaprio's name appears and the pace picks up
again. The clips get a lot shorter here, and the music gets a lot faster and more dramatic.
Sound
A Slow, non-diegetic music and the sound of overlapping waves begin the trailer. This creates a tense and mysterious
atmosphere, which, along with the mise-en-scene, gives the audience a sensation of discomfort.
The music remains slow but increases in volume before switching to a quieter clicking sound. Extreme close ups are
accompanied by exaggerated startling sounds and cries. This is a popular horror practice because it shocks the spectator and
creates a tense atmosphere. The non-diegetic music eventually develops to a disturbing high-pitched screechy sound. When
the music reaches a high, it stops and slows down again, and the picture darkens. As the clips speed up, so does the sound.
The sound gets louder and faster until the words "Shutter Island" appear. This appears to be the conclusion of the trailer, but
an unexpected footage with a loud screaming sound surprises the audience.
The use of the well-known actor
"Leonardo Di Caprio" and the
thriller/mystery element are the film's
USPs. The use of his name on the
poster will draw a lot of attention from
his fans and followers, as well as other
people who enjoy watching him, even
if the consumers don’t know his name
they will still recognize his face as he
is in many well know famous movies.
The main image depicts a man holding a match,
indicating that it is dark and therefore dangerous.
He has a strained expression and appears to be
looking for something. What exactly is he looking
for? It creates a sense of mystery and adds to the
genre's reveal. A close-up of a person's face is
used to convey emotion and add to the image's
intensity. The image of the main actor Leonardo
DiCaprio is of a male main character who is
stereotypical in thriller films.

Analysis Trailer 4- ‘Angel has fallen’- Rayan
The trailer starts showing two production titles, ‘Lionsgate’ and ‘Millenium media’. This quickly gives the audience an insight of
the high quality production the movie will have due to the the powerful institutions producing the film. A low angle/long shot is
used showing the whitehouse destroyed with the american flag falling. An edit of the title ‘In 2013 Olympus fell’ is put in front of it.
From this shot the audience gets the impression that something of power would be involved to cause such destruction. A few
extreme/long shots of explosions on the whitehouse are used with quick invisible cuts. Along with a medium/long shot of a guy
running in the face of danger and reloading his gun. This establishes how ‘olympus fell’ and who the main character could be. A
different title ‘In 2016 London fell’ is then edited on top of an aerial shot of london. A few shots follow after this of london being
destroyed and the same guy using his weapons and running. The audience see the way london has been destroyed the same
and can now infer that both attacks could be correlated and what appears to be the main character could be with a protection
force. An intense score plays throughout these shots to add suspense to the destruction being shown. A non-diegetic score of a
guy saying ‘the whitehouse has fallen. An attack has decimated the british capital’ plays with the score throughout the shots,
emphasizing on the seriousness of the situation. A title showing ‘In 2019’, with a series of shots of the same guy being involved
with this dangerous action is used, which then cuts to a title of ‘He will fall’. This impacts the audiences as they have just seen
how America and London have been destroyed while the guy appears to be protecting both, and now all that destruction is going
to be guided towards him. It creates suspense as the title ‘ he will fall’ gets the audience interested in continuing to watch out of
interest on whether or not he will survive it. It then cuts to a long shot of his daughter and and wife to a medium shot of the guy
kissing his wife goodbye telling her ‘ i’ll stay safe, i promise’. His facial expressions conveyed worry and stress. The irony in this
is that the audience know there is no safety in his job and added suspense is created as there is some realism brought onto the
scene because the audience are aware of the fact he could lose his family.

Analysis Trailer 4- ‘Angel has fallen’- Rayan
The score continues to play and different shot of him speaking to the president with a group on a lake is shown. Following with different shots of a drone
attack and people getting killed. This gives the audience a closer view to how dangerous his job is and what he faces on a regular. A medium to long
shot of him saving a guy by diving under water is used to show how the character has quick reactions to these situations and is able to help people
along with it. It cuts to a black screen with the title, ‘ In august’, to inform the viewers of the release date. A close-up shot of his hand cuffed to the
hospital bed is used with the shots alternating between the attack and the woman telling him he was behind all of it as he is the only survivor. This adds
a lot suspense as the audience have had a different perspective of what just happened and know that the actor is not in the wrong and is being framed.
The trailer then continues on to show him escaping and fighting the people he used to work with and shots of him finding the guy he saved along with his
dad. His relationship with his dad is represented to show that they are not close as he asks him what he wants with and angry expression on his face
rather then greet him. The guy asking his dad for help enables the audience to infer that the only reason he asked for the help is that he is in great
danger as there is no one out there who trusts but are rather trying to capture/kill him. A medium/close-up shot of the mother carrying her child crying is
used to show that his family is also in danger and this conforms to the uses and gratification theory of personal relationship. The audience could feel fear
and worry as they relate with the idea of putting a loved one in dangerous situations without the intentions of doing so. The worry the audience could feel
would make it more suspenseful as they do not want anything bad to happen to the family members as well. Different shots of a guy trying to find the
guy being framed are used along with a non-diegetic sound of him saying ‘you can’t hide from us’, establish who the villain of the story could be. Three
cuts are used to where a black screen with titles over it of ‘ the enemy’ ‘has never been closer’ ‘ to home’ are edited between shots. This makes the
audience question who the main villain/enemy could be which gets them invested in the mystery of it all. Lastly, the trailer starts coming to an end with
the score getting more intense and shots of the framed guy and the one has been saved are used to show that they are working together to survive this.
They both know that they are innocent but are working a way to help each other prove it. It then cuts to a black screen with a the title of the film and an
american flag falling from it. This brings an end to the trailer and the score stops playing. A soft score then plays with medium shot of the guy who was
saved saying ‘ the moments of struggle that define us’ to the guy who saved him. Then cutting to a medium shot showing the guys facial expression to
his saying. This quick scene gives the audience the impression that the guy who was saved is wise and guiding the framed guy to make sure he does
not act bad like the others. Seeing the moments of struggle and danger being faced with all of the destruction, make the audience invested due to the
suspense that was created.
Analysis Poster 4-

Title of both actors name- their
surname is put in bold, underneath
their first name as there is a lot of
fame built around it and many
people would recognize the actors,
specifically because of the
surname. The name could also
sound familiar to others and this
would give them the impression
that the actors involved are skilled.
It also shows who the two main
characters are in the film. This
attracts many wider audiences
because both actors have a an
exceeding reputation in the film
industry with a different audiences.
Morgan Freeman fans could be
older and possibly have many
African-Americans amongst them.
Whereas Gerard Butler fans would
be younger and possibly be made
up of more White Americans.
The movie title is in red, which could
symbolize the danger and death that would
be portrayed in the film. The release date is
put underneath in a much smaller font. This
is to inform the audience of when they could
watch the film, which may bring a lot of
viewers upon its release.
The background is a grey sky.
The dull color could symbolize
loss/despondency and a sad
atmosphere which the film may
portray. In contrast to the
whitehouse with light shining on
it. This could mean that there is
still a sense of hope and purity
through the sad atmosphere
conveyed.
This gives the audience a
very basic understanding of
what the plot could be. They
may now know what could
happen in the film, which
could get them invested out
of interest.
Both actors are put on the cover. Judging by the
fact that the first guy is looking down with upset
facial expressions, he has been through something
tough. He is wearing a vest and holding a gun.
From this the audience can infer that he is fighting
some sort of danger that could have cause a lot of
damage to the character. The Actor behind him is
looking to his right with a serious look on his face
and is wearing a suit. His pose gives the impression
that he could be working with the first guy as a
partner and the balck suit could represent power
and knowledge.

Media group research

  • 1. A2 Group research Zain, Rayan, Iris, Zak
  • 2. What is thriller- zak Film producers that promotes tension, anticipation, and suspense is known as the thriller genre. They do this so that the audience's mood is changed, so that there is constantly a sense of suspense, and that the curiosity of what's to come is obvious. Thriller films provide an adrenaline rush to viewers and are frequently fast-paced. Thriller films rely heavily on sound and editing. Black and white are also traditions in thrillers, as they give the film a more dark and gloomy tone. Because thrillers use a deeper psychological approach, lighting and shadows, as well as mirrors and stairs, are heavily emphasized. The primary goal of thrillers is to keep the audience on the edge of their seats and their gaze fixed on the screen. They provide the spectator a flood of emotions and moments.
  • 3. Thriller sub-genres - Rayan Horror thrillers are a combination of the horror and thriller genre. These focus on suspense, tension and adrenaline whilst still putting an emphasis on fear, terror, and gore. Many thriller films tend to cross over into the horror genre and vice versa. Science Fiction thrillers traditionally use heroes and villains as the main characters that follow some form of quest or mission to save the world. The characters are used to create anticipation and suspense for the audience. Action Thriller uses physical action to create suspense within the film. Like a traditional Action film, this sub-genre will often have continuous motion and action including physical stunts, chases, fights, battles, and races. Often, these scenes will contribute to the overall sense of danger that the protagonist is facing. Psychological Thriller incorporates elements of drama and mystery film. The suspense in this sub-genre comes from the mind, rather than from a psychical threat. The protagonists in Psychological Thrillers must rely on their mental resources to solve the situation. Because of their nature, many Psychological Thrillers cross over into the Horror genre. Mystery thriller: Most mysteries reveal a crime and then require their main characters to work backwards to figure out who committed that crime. In a thriller, the bad guy is often established early on, and the main characters must work to stop them from doing evil. This was useful to research as it helped us understand what specific thriller we could base our trailer on and how to mindmap our storyline
  • 4. What is your chosen genre? The genre we have decided to do is thriller. Types of thriller: ● A protagonist in a thriller novel frequently tries to combat a foreign force, a terrorist organization, or a cruel villain. Espionage, financial crimes, politics, and adventure are all common themes in conflicts. ● Thrillers, in any case, have a lot on the line. ● That's why they're so thrilling. ● Thrillers are full of suspense, action, and aggressiveness, and are sometimes referred to as "heart- pounding" or "fast-paced." These high-intensity wars are essential to a thriller tale, whether humanity is on the line or billions of dollars are at stake.
  • 5. History of thriller genre - Zain 1920 - 1930 In 1926 a man named Alfred Hitchcock released his 3rd silent thriller called “The Lodger” which was a Jack the ripper story filled with suspense. • 6. 1970 - 1990 In 1972 After two decades of foreign films, Hitchcock released an english film “The Frenzy” which was shocking and violent and had high certificate ratings everywhere it was shown. In 1929 Alfred Hitchcock released another thriller film called “Blackmail” which was the first thriller with sound In 1931 the German director Fritz Lang released a film called “The Chilling”. The film was based on a serial killer. In 1933 another crime thriller was released called “Murders In The Zoo” this was directed by Edward Sutherland. 2000 - present In 2001 the film “Hannibal” was released which is a crime thriller directed by Ridley Scott. In 2006 “The Da Vinci code” was directed by Ron Howard which is more of a psychological thriller. Based off of the book that was written by Dan Brown. • 7. What is film distribution? - Zain Film distribution is the process by which the product (film, television show etc.) is released into the market; films don’t become successful and well-known and successful by luck, it’s all up to the distributors to sell the product to television, cinemas, airlines or any company that shows films or television shows as well as circulating and marketing the product so that people can watch it at home via DVD, download etc. The distributors play a huge role in film production - without them, no one would know about many great famous films today. Thriller films are always a great choice for low-budget films as they focus on narrative. Research methodology requires gathering relevant data from the various documents, websites, film journals from whichever sources possible and compiling them in order to analyse the material and arrive at a more complete understanding of movie distribution and answer following Issues: How TV is impacting movie distribution How online streaming eg. Youtube etc. are changing face of movie distribution How above points can be leveraged by movie distributors to improve their distribution
  • 8. Who usually distributes movies of your genre - Zak, Rayan Film distribution is the process of launching a film and then sustaining the public's interest. • 9. Different ways we can distribute our film - Zain Standard distribution: in the standard process, a movie is first released through cinemas (theatrical window) then, after approximately 16 and a half weeks, it is released into services such as DVD, after an additional number of months it is released to pay TV and online subscription sites, and approximately two years after its theatrical release date, it is made available for ‘free to air’ TV. Pros of standard distribution: ➢ Availability to a wide range of people. ➢ Receives its own marketing from the sites and channels airing it. ➢ Gains income from multiple platforms. ➢ Gives the impression that the film is ‘new’ for a long time. Cons of standard distribution: ➢ People may become frustrated from it as its advertised for a long period of time. ➢ After two years, it will have little income from the public, only from TV companies airing it etc. Theatrical distribution: theatrical distribution is often if the distributors owns theatres or film distribution networks (e.g Universal owns Odeon) or through theatrical exhibitors and other sub-distributors. A limited distributor may deal with only particular products, such as DVD or Blu-Ray or may act in a particular country or market. International distribution: For international distribution you must set processes, relationships anf fulfillment in order to get your film into the overseas market. International agents are distributors, although they do not own a single theatre, home video label or television outlet. They are essentially distributors that license films to territory distributors (buyers).
  • 10. Simultaneous release: This takes place when a movie is made available on multiple different platforms (cinema, DVD, internet) at the same time or very little difference in timing. Pros of simultaneous release: ➢ Consumers may choose the platform that best fit their needs. ➢ Production studios only have to run one marketing campaign for all releases. ➢ Gain income from multiple platforms. Cons of simultaneous release: ➢ Often regarded as experimental and thus does not receive substantial investment or promotion. “Create space”: This is a rare option, but one i came across when researching distribution. “Create Space” is a company owned by amazon, that offer film production as DVD’s on amazon. They help you self produce your film into a DVD for less money than traditional manufacturing. They help you distribute your film via internet retail outlets and other retailers that may be interested in your product. A drawback they have however, is that there is no guarantee that your product will be purchased. Non-theatrical distribution: Based on out film budget, low standard of actors, undiscovered film company, and quality of general camerawork and editing, our product would likely be a feature film under a non theatrical distribution. It is likely that our film would never be released in cinemas and would be sent straight to retail because of its lack of marketability, look, story or premise.
  • 11. Different ways we can distribute our trailer - Zain Social media distribution: Pros of social media distribution Cons of social media distribution Can reach specific audiences easier, attract desired attention, worldwide access. Requires the target audience to have social media and frequently use it. Requires little investment and yet may still be seen by many in the public. Unfortunately ideas and aspects of the film may easily be stolen. Can be shared by others, so it has infinite copies to be repeatedly seen. Hard to grasp attention online especially amongst all other advertisements. Easily modified. Provides no income. As well as for the film itself it helps build interest in the production crew and cast as well as distributors and studios. Can receive negative feedback from ‘trolls’ resulting in a lack of hype for the film. Available to the public 24/7 Technology can sometimes be unreliable.
  • 12. Codes and conventions - Zain Mise en scene: Lighting and colour- the use of lighting, allows the audience to anticipate what the genre of the film is on by how the lighting is displayed (dark and sombre atmosphere). Therefore in thriller films low key lighting is used often as it creates a mysterious atmosphere that would give off suspense while creating tension as the audience is unaware of what could be happening/surrounding the character. Additionally, low key lighting creates a dark menacing atmosphere to the scene. Settings & Props- the setting can relate to location. Where the scene is being taken place or where a scene is set. This could be an inside or outside location. Props are objects used by the actors performing in the film. Depending on what props are being used, it can help determine the identity of character and also the genre in a fim. Conventionally, thrillers are set in normal everyday environments such as houses - this is because it adds suspense to the action as the antagonist is disturbing normality. In addition, when there is a chase scene within the film is small, confined spaces they are normally used to signify entrapment and isolation. Furthermore, props within the scene aid with the narrative of the film and can provide information about the characters personality. Guns are conventionally used within thrillers to symbolise danger. Costumes & Makeup - The use of costumes and make up make the actors appear lifelike to the character they are playing, for example on a thriller movie there could be a clown character and to make him more realistic they add the costume and clown makeup. Conventionally characters within Thrillers are shown to have smart appearances which suggests the characters personality and role. However, costumes may also highlight the differences between the character showing contrasts in their personality which creates mystery for the audience concerning the characters personality.
  • 13. Codes and conventions - Zain Camera Work: Thriller films conventionally adapt the use of different camera works to demonstrate immediate change in the situation. This can specifically be seen within the thriller film ‘inception’ which uses shot types such as: Canted angle, Close up, Wide shot, Two shot and Wide shot to demonstrate different situations. Camera work is an important aspect in a thriller film as it sets the mood for the audience, which helps build up tension so the film is more effective. Canted angle shot: The canted angle shot shows the situation as unusual signifying that something has happened to change this. This type of shot is conventional is used to show distress, a key theme in thrillers. Close-up shot: The shot shows key features of the subject within the scene. This is used to emphasise the characters key details and expressions, therefore showing their emotions toward what is happening. Two Shot: The two shot is used within the scene in order to establish a relationship or connection between them. Within the scene, it is used to demonstrate the similar situation the characters are in. However, the scene may also highlight their differences such as gender, age and clothing Wide shot: The wide shot places the subject in the middle of the frame so that the audience is able to identify the situation surrounding them. Mid shot: The mid shot allows the audience to view the elements of mis en scene such as characters clothing and the prop of the gun. Which therefore tells the audience what type of person the character is.
  • 14. Codes and conventions- iris, zain Editing: Thrillers conventionally use editing techniques to increase element of suspense and tension. This can be seen through elements such as the use of reaction shots which are designed to highlight the characters reaction when they are approached by the antagonist. Additionally, cuts always emphasise what is happening around the situation in an alternative scene, conventionally, one scene is shown as chaotic whereas another demonstrates calm, everyday life adding to the twists and suspense within the plot. In addition, the titles and captions on the film trailer are designed to emphasise the narrative of the film. These create suspense and tension through their quick and catchy phrases, conventionally these also fade to black to emphasise the scene has ended. Titles: A lot of titles in films gives a good representation of the film itself. For example, the title of the movie IT is in red which represents blood, danger and violence, the title is also shaped to look like there's blood dripping down to create more of an effect. Most of the time thriller movies use a lot of dark colors and tones in the background behind the title (just like IT) to show all the types of negative emotions and themes that are portrayed in this genre. In thriller movies it’s very rare to create a title with bright color because they create a more positive and happy mood.
  • 15. Codes and conventions- Zain, iris Sound: Thrillers feature the use of elements such as ambient sound in order to increase tension and panic to the situation. “Scream” incorporates the use of asynchronous background through the girls screaming when the title appears which allows the audience to immediately recognise the nature of the film genre. Additionally, voice overs on a trailer draws the audience's attention as the trailer is directly addressing them. Sounds in thrillers can be split in four parts: ● Music ● Sound effects ● Dialogue ● Silence The music, or in other terms the “scare”, can be used for many purposes, such as, to set the mood and atmosphere or even to bridge two pieces of filming together. The music that’s often used is mostly pop music or modern contemporary. Orchestral music tends to be used a lot in horror or thriller films because of how well it creates that scary and intense atmosphere, it makes the film look more alive too and more dramatized. For example, orchestral music is very evident in the movie Psycho, which is one of Alfred Hitchcock’s most famous pieces. In the shower scene the whole scene is sort of elevated because of how high pitched the music could go. This is only used to show the audience that something very shocking or scary is going to happen, most probably a jump scare to sort of prepare the audience and let them know it’s the scary part of the scene.
  • 16. Sound effects are used to make something sound real. For example, in a thriller movie they would over emphasize on the footsteps because it was meant to create suspense and be sort of frightening. It can be laid over the movie in the editing or they can be used in real movie time. For example in the movie IT the opening scene seems to show a storm and a lot of rain so they’d have to use a loud sound effect for the rain to create that danger, so the audience could understand that the boy is going to be in a lot of danger Voice Overs can be used in two different ways. The voice over dialogue that you can hear in movies such as Shrek or Ice age, when its cartoon characters and it’s not actually someone acting on camera and they use other peoples voices to make it sound like the animals or Shrek is talking at a particular time. The latter is used in a way where the character tells you how he feels in a certain situation. Often these are the most interesting parts of the movie as the audience knows exactly how a character feels, but it can also start to get boring if it’s repetitive and too long. As well as having a narrator which is a fictional agent who tells or shows a story, be it in a film, a novel, or a play, from inside the story. Because the narrator is part of the story, the events of the story are real for him or her, whereas they are fictional for us. This is helpful for the audience to understand every single bit of the ongoing story so the audience doesn’t feel lost and confused while watching a film. This is added most of the times to create an effect of suspense and excitement
  • 17. Characters in thriller films - Zain A thriller can be split into 3 sub genres; psychological, action and criminal thriller. In our movie idea, the subgenre is psychological and thriller. However, the overlap is often found in characters that are typical of thrillers, even though their role may differ. An example of a famous psychological thriller is “The Sixth Sense” (Dir. Shyamalan, 1999). Furthermore, “The Bourne Identity” (Dir. Liman, 2002) and “Reservoir Dogs” (Dir. Tarantino, 1992) are famous action crime thrillers respectively. Characters in thrillers: The innocent victim: Each thriller requires a victim to show the power of the antagonist. Usually these victims are in groups, although it can be found that a singular victim is used to show the villain deteriorating the victims physical or mental state. An innocent victim is Jodie Foster’s, played by Clarice Starling in “Silence Of The Lambs” (Dir. Demme, 1991). The film is primarily known as a horror but has many psychological thriller aspects. She is shown interrogating serial killer and cannibal Lecter to gain information about another character on the loose, Buffalo Bill. In various scenes she is shown suffering as a result of talking to him and is clearly uncomfortable during scenes with him. other kinds of innocent victims include a typical ‘chatterbox’ character, usually a young women or a young couple. Criminals and convicts: The first major threat in thriller movies are criminals that corrupt the main character during their time in prison or escaped convicts that are a threat to society. In “Silence Of The Lambs”, Anthony Hopkins plays Hannibal Lector, a serial killer who is in prison and is being asked to provide information on another killer. During scenes, in which he is being interrogated, he seems like a dangerous character with long takes of his crazed face often being the main focus. He is a threat in the film, who constantly feels to be perpetuating danger. These characters already connote danger after being in prison for doing something wrong, which aids them in appearing as lethal to the character. Stalkers and creepy attitudes: In a psychological thriller, a stalker can be the main villain and threat to the innocent victim. Their obsessive behaviour appears as frightening in the movie and will show the audience who the antagonist is from the start without the need of mass exposition. Sometimes the stalker does not need to have a physical presence to be scary. A sense of unease can be created through mentioning of their actions or attitudes “The Blair Witch Project” (Dir. Sanchez, 1999) is often regarded as one of the great psychological films and it shows no manifestation of the threat to the characters throughout the movie. A general tone of malice can be created around a character through multiple film- making methods. Long takes that continue after the other character has started talking, obsessive behaviour and acting unnatural can all create this sense. The Law: The law, in form of the police or a generally powerful character, is present in thriller films - but fulfills different roles in action and psychological thrillers. In an action thriller, the law can often be an antagonistic presence, They oppose the criminal who is the main character for the film, often fighting for a cause the audience can support. This is seen lots in the action thriller “Fast and Furious” series. However, in psychological thrillers the law can often be an end goal or protector for the main characters. The aim is often to call the police or be protected by them throughout. The “Silence Of The Lambs” shows clarice as being under constant protection from the law.
  • 18. Thriller Conventions - Costume Rayan Costume varies across the different sub genres in a thriller. the different costumes depend on the different characters and settings in the film. For example in an office setting a suit may be used for the costume, whereas if the film was set in a rougher area old worn clothes may be used. Costume is important in the thriller genre because it can tell an audience a lot about a character before they even do anything. Depending on the costume you can make a character seem richer or poor, important or an average citizen and can tell the audience what job they have too. For example, since police are used in most crime thriller films, a police or detective costume is important. The costume must look realistic to take the film seriously, often for a police officer this is a blue shirt of polo shirt with a navy blue vest and navy trousers. It is important that anyone with the same role all have matching costumes in order to maintain the set look of this character. For detectives on the other hand, most of these characters wear casual clothes and do not have to wear a uniform. However the costume must still suit the character. In the case of detectives, often a shirt and jeans is used under a long coat or jacket, this makes the character look smart but at the same time aware of the stereotypical detective look so that the audience are aware of who the character is through the use of the costume. Costume is an important factor that we have to consider when making our thriller. We now have an idea of what our costumes could be like to give a general view that the trailer is a reflection of a thriller movie.

Warner Bros stated the film outperformed the final Star Wars film, Revenge of the Sith, which was released earlier that year and grossed the same amount of money but across four days. The reasons why this movie specifically stood out and presented its genre in the best way possible is the fact that it presents the triwizard tournament which creates a mysterious environment for the audience since each tournament was clearly hidden from the players and from us too. • 31. Audience profile-zak There is a wide variety of both genders who enjoy mystery films, but, because we are developing a mystery/action trailer, I will need to include individuals who enjoy both mystery and action films. After that, I'll mix the two to build my own target audience. Because they will need to comprehend and figure out the plot, action/mystery films are usually aimed at a mature audience.Action movies are usually aimed at males as it is stereotypically 'what guys like' this is one reason why we have added the mystery aspect to the movie as girls are stereotypically more intelligent and may leave them interacted with the movie. Therefore our target audience are both males and females.i have decided for our age range to target 15-40 as our target audience this is because our audience will need to be interested in both action and mystery.
  • 32. Audience: Demographics- Zain Age: Many thriller movies are targeted towards a 15+ audience, however, psychological thrillers tend to be 18+ due to having many violent and sexual scenes. They are often aimed at a mature audience of (young) adults as it may be too much to handle for younger audiences. Our target audiences age is 15-24 Gender: When it comes to gender, there is a close to equal amount of males and females who watch thriller. Taking the united states population as example, by 2018, 84 % of the viewers were male and 83 % were female. Location: most thriller films are usually set in America including very successful ones such as the sixth sense. This makes it more relatable for Americans and targeted towards them. Some films however, have different locations where scenes would be set such as the movie inception. It would have a broad target audience such as people from Tokyo, England, Canada and America. Ethnicity: Thrillers could have a specific target audience depending on the cast (actors/actresses in the film). People of different races may appeal to the film, if the cast includes people of different races. Socio-Economic group: Thriller does not really have a set target audience as it is broad, however, it may be relatable to the working class because the people who tend to view these films are young adults still in education. It may also appeal to the middle class due to the characters portrayed in the movies are more investigative characters like professors or detectives linking to the theme of problem solving. This gives us a greater understanding of whom the audience is and how we can direct it towards them.
  • 33. Audience - Psychographics - Rayan Mainstreamers: Thriller would appeal to this psychographics because it is usually broad. Thriller goes in the top 5 most watched genres and this would mainly be the reason on why most of their audience are mainstreamers. .
  • 34. Analysis Trailer 1 - Zain In the beginning of the trailer there are 3 opening shots with a voiceover of a character to build up the equilibrium of the story. It cuts to the production companies of the film - by looking at who produced the film the audience is able to get an idea of what the film will be about. Legendary Pictures often produced films with elements out of the ordinary people with an ability that others don’t have. Warner Brothers produce blockbuster films with highly profiled actors, this shows that the actors in the film, producers and directors are credited. The High angle shot of the girl shows that she is being taught something or introduced to something new. The next CGI long shot of the road being uplifted and rolled over, shows that there is a fictional element to the film. A series of confusing Close up and Long Shot images all lead up to the disruption. The pace of shots change from relatively slow paced long clips, to faster shorter ones in comparison. The drums in the music become more prominent and the music becomes louder creating tension. Through mise-en-scene shown in the medium shots, disruption of the film is shown. Initially there was violence but the protagonist has been separated from it, however now he is seen with a gun that he knows how to use. This raises questions about the protagonist. The string instruments in the music become faster which causes the tension to increase. At the start of the trailer, the two characters were shown standing close together which highlights their friendship and closeness. However afterwards, the two characters are shown further apart and arguing which represents the change in mood and relationship between them. There is a shift between the build up of action to the peak of action and one of the characters say “we need to break out of here, give him the kick” this is followed by a slow motion shit where we see a man falling in a bath-tub, Throughout the trailer the motif of water is used a lot which makes the audience think it could signify something. The use of short clips during the climax of the trailer show that this is where the main action is taking place. Distorted shots are now also being used, which could represent a sense of confusion and that the dream like world is starting fall apart. The sound of the girl screaming “Wake me up Wake me up” is loud and because of the repetition it sounds extremely panicked and tense. This adds a sense of danger to the trailer as the girl is in need of help. The title of the film appearing at the end of the trailer helps the audience remember the name of the film and therefore makes themm more inclined to go and watch it. The background is also in the shape of a maze which could give an insight to the audience of what the films about. In addition, the construction of the title is reflective of a maze. This is linked into the concept of the film as the protagonist struggles to differentiate between the many ideas and the film it self includes lots of complex ideas.
  • 35. Analysis Poster 1 - Zain Low-Key lighting with dark theme in order to fit the conventions of a thriller film. It is also noticeably darker around the edges so that the audience are drawn to the characters in the centre. Leonardo Dicaprio - a famous A-list actor’s name is at the top of the poster. Presenting him as the lead actor. His name will hopefully draw fans in to the film. He has a following of 51.1M followers on instagram so he is well-known and this can encourage supporters to view the film when they see he is in it. He has also been in famous films such as ‘Titanic’ so his name will be familiar to many. The bright light in the centre- back contrasts to the darkness on the foreground which could foreshadow their future is not good compared to their happier past. There is big bold writing in red of the title of the movie ‘Inception’ which stands out a lot compared to the other texts. The font used is clear and sharp as well. According to Barthes theory of color symbolism, the color red could have been used to connote danger and violence. There are 6 characters are all seen wearing suits, this could suggest that they are of high status/doing an important job. The way they are positioned suggests they are in a team. Suits could imply their team is formal more than a social group of friends. Two of the characters are also seen holding guns which could imply they are doing something that is dangerous. Below the title it says ‘ From the director of the Dark Knight’ which was a highly rated movie so it draws in the attention of fans of the film as a form of advertisement. The taglines are written small as it is not as relevant. The slogan says “your mind is the scene of the crime” the slogan is catchy and it is important that they put this on the poster for advertising purposes of the film. The slogan involves and directly addresses the audiences by saying “your mind” making it more engaging.
  • 36. Analysis Website 1 - Zain There is a blurb with information about the film. The first line immediately draws attention as it speaks to the audience directly. It also mentions the credited actors who took part and producers which would draw audiences attention as they sound familiar. Information on the film for the audiences who are interested in viewing as well as promoting their facebook page to gain more followers. There are small clips of the film available for audiences to view for free, they did this to give the audience an idea of what the film is and using short clips will intrigue the audience and make them want to watch more. Many platforms of where the film is available is listed, they have a wide variation of places where it is distributed and can be found which is convenient for audiences.
  • 37. Analysis Trailer 2 “Run” - iris Link of the trailer that i will be analysing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Dhh7q9Us5c In the opening scene we can see a medium close up of a woman, her eyebrows are frowned and her mouth is slightly open this could show that she’s in shock or she’s feeling confused and worried, in the background there looks to be people standing, and in dressed in blue uniform that is typically only worn by doctors this shows that the setting of the first scene is in a hospital room. Her hand is placed on the glass and her facial expression changed to fear and distraught this could show to the audience that what she’s looking at is what is making her feel this way, this could make the audience confused since they’re not able to see exactly what she’s looking at. After this the audiences confusion is gone because there’s immediately a background voice of the woman asking “if she’s going to be okay”, then the camera slowly tilts and the audience can clearly see, this is about a mother who gave birth and is unsure if her baby will survive. A shallow focus was used when showing the baby to point out how upset the mother is as well as showing how small the baby is which in this case looks like it isn’t normal. Multiple long shots are being used to show where the next scene could be set at. The next couple scenes is cuts of the daughter talking about how much her mother does for her, and there’s a medium shot used to show the mother taking care of her garden, this could represent to the audience at the start that she’s a good person, then it's being followed by a close up shot of the mother cooking, which again puts her in a good light with the audience. Shot reverse shot of the two women talking and reassuring each other how much they care for each other which makes it look like they have a good relationship from the outside, however the music in the background seems to be getting more and more intense, this could build up excitement and tension with the audience or to show that the bad things will happen eventually. A close up of a few files that the daughter found, show that her mother is keeping something from her and the audience could clearly see from the frowned eyebrows and her eyes widening that she might’ve found something out that she wasn’t supposed to. A medium shot of the daughter using the computer is shown to show that she's searching something up which indicates curiosity and trying to find out what is going on with her mother, lowkey lighting is used in this scene to create a tense and disturbing atmosphere. A medium long shot is shown of the mother sitting across her daughter and watching without her knowing, which was used to scare the audience as it’s not normal to sit in the dark and the music drops as soon as the camera shift to the mother, this would make the audience feel very on edge and scared.
  • 38. A close up shot of a container with green pills which has a huge “Run” label on it, again linking back to the name of the actual movie and also giving the audience a sign that she's in trouble and she needs to find a way to escape. This also gives the audience a little backstory to what is actually happening between them. A medium shot is then used to show her looking over her shoulder with her mouth slightly open as soon as she hears her mothers voice, this shows that she's starting to become terrified of her own mother and that she might feel that she needs to hide. This could affect the audience because they would feel sympathy for the young girl, because she can't be living in her own house when stereotypically your home is the safest place for you.a medium shot of her then shouting and being locked in a room, proves that she's unsafe and trapped in her own world that is built on lakes because of her mother. A medium long shot is then shown of the young girl “running” away from her mother which again is linking to the movie title and proving a point to the audience that all she could do was run away. Multiple medium close up clots are shown when objects like traffic lights repeatedly flash the word “Run” and then created with trees, this is now clearly making a statement for the audience watching that her only solution to this is to run away from her evil mother, in order to survive. Fast cuts of the mother holding her daughter shows how in one side she's the mother she's supposed to be, smiling and looking in her eyes and the other cut is her looking straight at her with her eyes wide open and an angry and frustrated face. The mother then says “you figured it out” and then it immediately cuts to a scene where the mother is trying to get on the other side of the door where her door is hiding, this shows that everything is let out and the daughter can finally see what type of person her mother is. Towards the last scenes there's a close up of an injection which then makes it very clear that the mother was lying about some medical issues the daughter might’ve had, which creates curiosity within the audience to see what actually is the reason to all of this.
  • 39. Analysis Poster 2 -iris The main colors that are used in this poster is red, white and black. Red symbolizes danger which could give the audience an insight of what the movies theme could be about, for example the figure on the top could be the one in danger and the figure in the bottom creating the danger. White symbolizes hope and purity, the figure on the top is surrounded by white as the door frame and so is the staircase, which could show that, the character that is up from the staircase is pure and the damsel in distress, trying to be saved. The color black symbolizes evil and death, the whole movie poster background is black which could show that the whole movie could be a representation of evil events that could occur throughout the movie. The actors are written in the bottom in black to keep up with the dark theme, Sarah Paulson on other horror/thriller films which give an idea to the audience that it could be one of those genres. The woman being at the bottom and the other figure on the top could show that she’s trying to get to the top to her and that’s why the word “RUN” is in bold and capital letters to point the meaning out to the audience that she has to run away from the woman because it looks like she’s trying to harm her. The phrase run is already creating a terrifying effect as when someone comes after you and tries to harm you, the first bodily instinct is to run away. However the figure on the top seems to be in a wheelchair which contrasts the fact that she has to “run” because she’s physically incapable of doing that, they could’ve added this so they could intrigue the audience to find out more about what happens to the character Lionsgate films is being placed onto the movie poster so the audience knows who is going to distribute the film to them. This is placed more for the overall branding. Lionsgate fans could feel encouraged to watch this movie because they’re favorite entertainment company is creating it, they would then immediately assume its a good movie The tag line is linked and strategically planned to be released on mothers day, this obviously goes goes against traditional values of what mothers day is all about. The tag line is clearly very sarcastic and ironic since we can already tell it’s a thriller movie, this is linking back to mothers day where kids show how much they love and appreciate their mothers but in this case, the mother is the evil character and the child wouldn’t be thankful to be in the position where she/he is with her mother. They could’ve added this tag line to confuse the audience and have them wonder how a mother could harm her child, because of how mother roles are meant to be presented. The writing is both in red to point out that the mother is the true danger. Being or feeling paranoid is a big sign of horror or thriller movies because the victim always feels paranoid when someone is out to harm them. This could show to the audience that they could feel paranoid while watching this movie
  • 40. Analysis Website 2- iris On their bio they have a link called hulu where the fans can click the link and it takes them to another social media platform called twitter where a Live Q&A is up and running where the cast and filmmakers of “Run” answer some questions and generally speaking about what the movie is about and other important information the fans need to know. This helps the audience that are curious to understand where this movie and idea came from and how it was for the actors to film it. This could help especially if the audience wanted to know more about the movie after watching it. • 41. Analysis website- iris These are some of the most recent posts on their instagram page, the captions are again linking to the poster where they kept on mentioning mothers day and how its very ironic and sarcastic because the mother clearly goes against what a mother should be like with her child. The most on the right is also ironic because it shows the mother comforting her daughter when in reality she’s the problem. You can see it from her facial expressions that she’s looking worried about something, could be that her daughter might be realizing what type of person she is. These posts give a small insight of what the movie will be like. The caption of the picture on the left shows that the picture is symbolizing how she’s looking out if her mom notices her, shows she’s not a good person. As well as putting the hashtag of the movie where all the posts about the movie are placed.
  • 42. Analysis Trailer 3- zak A film trailer objective is to promote and attract an audience. They're also meant to give the audience a taste of what's at the taste of the movie. Through strategies such as music and images aimed at specific genres, age groups, and more, a good trailer will attract the right target audience. The titles The Shutter Island film trailer titles are simple, with a plain white font on a black background. This gives the trailer a mysterious tone because it doesn't seem to reveal anything, which is a frequent thriller technique. This is also suggested by the gloomy colors. The director, Martin Scorsese, is introduced first, followed by the main character, Leonardo Dicaprio, who appears as an overlay title. This appeals to the audience because both are well-known for producing excellent movies. The term "Shutter Island" appears on screen in a huge font and fades out after a few seconds, accompanied by strong music that slows down. This creates a sense of discomfort at the end of the trailer, encouraging viewers to want to see and learn more. The contrast between black and white suggests a binary opposition of good and evil, which is a typical thriller theme.
  • 43. Characters - zak The film includes a strong cast, including Leonardo Dicaprio, Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley, and others, who are all feature in the teaser. This helps to draw in a large audience because many people will come to see the movie because of the actors. Throughout the trailer, Leonardo Dicaprio is portrayed as a male protagonist. Propp described this character as inportant who is usually seeking out something or someone in the plot. • 44. Location, colour and lighting -zak Throughout the trailer, the colors are mostly dark and gloomy. This contributes to the illusion that the trailer is a thriller by creating a suspenseful and unpleasant mood. The clips in some areas of the trailer have a minor blue filter applied to them, making them appear cold and ominous. The usage of black and white in the names suggests a basic contrast of good and evil. In thrillers, this is a common convention. The trailer is set on an isolated island, which is first shown in a long shot establishing the setting. This area is intriguing because it is obvious that no one can get out. The fog is used in the trailer's opening shots to create an unpleasant atmosphere for the audience. moreover, there is aslo a range of low-key lighting being used through out the trailer to create and portray a dark and suspenseful image ……. • 45. Shots and editing -zak A variety of close-ups, establishing long shots, medium close-ups, and other shots are used in the start of the trailer. This gives the audience a more natural view. As the trailer progresses, the pictures become more intense, with an increasing use of close-ups and extreme close-ups. The fade to black in between most clips adds tension and suspense due to the darkness. A couple of the cips are flashing. Because there isn't much given away, this produces an intense and unsettling mood. The editing speed goes up throughout the trailer, building suspense. This tempo, however, pauses for a brief while in the middle of the trailer, producing an unsettling feeling, until Leonardo Dicaprio's name appears and the pace picks up again. The clips get a lot shorter here, and the music gets a lot faster and more dramatic. Sound A Slow, non-diegetic music and the sound of overlapping waves begin the trailer. This creates a tense and mysterious atmosphere, which, along with the mise-en-scene, gives the audience a sensation of discomfort. The music remains slow but increases in volume before switching to a quieter clicking sound. Extreme close ups are accompanied by exaggerated startling sounds and cries. This is a popular horror practice because it shocks the spectator and creates a tense atmosphere. The non-diegetic music eventually develops to a disturbing high-pitched screechy sound. When the music reaches a high, it stops and slows down again, and the picture darkens. As the clips speed up, so does the sound. The sound gets louder and faster until the words "Shutter Island" appear. This appears to be the conclusion of the trailer, but an unexpected footage with a loud screaming sound surprises the audience.
  • 46. The use of the well-known actor "Leonardo Di Caprio" and the thriller/mystery element are the film's USPs. The use of his name on the poster will draw a lot of attention from his fans and followers, as well as other people who enjoy watching him, even if the consumers don’t know his name they will still recognize his face as he is in many well know famous movies. • 48. Analysis Trailer 4- ‘Angel has fallen’- Rayan The trailer starts showing two production titles, ‘Lionsgate’ and ‘Millenium media’. This quickly gives the audience an insight of the high quality production the movie will have due to the the powerful institutions producing the film. A low angle/long shot is used showing the whitehouse destroyed with the american flag falling. An edit of the title ‘In 2013 Olympus fell’ is put in front of it. From this shot the audience gets the impression that something of power would be involved to cause such destruction. A few extreme/long shots of explosions on the whitehouse are used with quick invisible cuts. Along with a medium/long shot of a guy running in the face of danger and reloading his gun. This establishes how ‘olympus fell’ and who the main character could be. A different title ‘In 2016 London fell’ is then edited on top of an aerial shot of london. A few shots follow after this of london being destroyed and the same guy using his weapons and running. The audience see the way london has been destroyed the same and can now infer that both attacks could be correlated and what appears to be the main character could be with a protection force. An intense score plays throughout these shots to add suspense to the destruction being shown. A non-diegetic score of a guy saying ‘the whitehouse has fallen. An attack has decimated the british capital’ plays with the score throughout the shots, emphasizing on the seriousness of the situation. A title showing ‘In 2019’, with a series of shots of the same guy being involved with this dangerous action is used, which then cuts to a title of ‘He will fall’. This impacts the audiences as they have just seen how America and London have been destroyed while the guy appears to be protecting both, and now all that destruction is going to be guided towards him. It creates suspense as the title ‘ he will fall’ gets the audience interested in continuing to watch out of interest on whether or not he will survive it. It then cuts to a long shot of his daughter and and wife to a medium shot of the guy kissing his wife goodbye telling her ‘ i’ll stay safe, i promise’. His facial expressions conveyed worry and stress. The irony in this is that the audience know there is no safety in his job and added suspense is created as there is some realism brought onto the scene because the audience are aware of the fact he could lose his family. • 49. Analysis Trailer 4- ‘Angel has fallen’- Rayan The score continues to play and different shot of him speaking to the president with a group on a lake is shown. Following with different shots of a drone attack and people getting killed. This gives the audience a closer view to how dangerous his job is and what he faces on a regular. A medium to long shot of him saving a guy by diving under water is used to show how the character has quick reactions to these situations and is able to help people along with it. It cuts to a black screen with the title, ‘ In august’, to inform the viewers of the release date. A close-up shot of his hand cuffed to the hospital bed is used with the shots alternating between the attack and the woman telling him he was behind all of it as he is the only survivor. This adds a lot suspense as the audience have had a different perspective of what just happened and know that the actor is not in the wrong and is being framed. The trailer then continues on to show him escaping and fighting the people he used to work with and shots of him finding the guy he saved along with his dad. His relationship with his dad is represented to show that they are not close as he asks him what he wants with and angry expression on his face rather then greet him. The guy asking his dad for help enables the audience to infer that the only reason he asked for the help is that he is in great danger as there is no one out there who trusts but are rather trying to capture/kill him. A medium/close-up shot of the mother carrying her child crying is used to show that his family is also in danger and this conforms to the uses and gratification theory of personal relationship. The audience could feel fear and worry as they relate with the idea of putting a loved one in dangerous situations without the intentions of doing so. The worry the audience could feel would make it more suspenseful as they do not want anything bad to happen to the family members as well. Different shots of a guy trying to find the guy being framed are used along with a non-diegetic sound of him saying ‘you can’t hide from us’, establish who the villain of the story could be. Three cuts are used to where a black screen with titles over it of ‘ the enemy’ ‘has never been closer’ ‘ to home’ are edited between shots. This makes the audience question who the main villain/enemy could be which gets them invested in the mystery of it all. Lastly, the trailer starts coming to an end with the score getting more intense and shots of the framed guy and the one has been saved are used to show that they are working together to survive this. They both know that they are innocent but are working a way to help each other prove it. It then cuts to a black screen with a the title of the film and an american flag falling from it. This brings an end to the trailer and the score stops playing. A soft score then plays with medium shot of the guy who was saved saying ‘ the moments of struggle that define us’ to the guy who saved him. Then cutting to a medium shot showing the guys facial expression to his saying. This quick scene gives the audience the impression that the guy who was saved is wise and guiding the framed guy to make sure he does not act bad like the others. Seeing the moments of struggle and danger being faced with all of the destruction, make the audience invested due to the suspense that was created.
  • 50. Analysis Poster 4- Rayan Title of both actors name- their surname is put in bold, underneath their first name as there is a lot of fame built around it and many people would recognize the actors, specifically because of the surname. The name could also sound familiar to others and this would give them the impression that the actors involved are skilled. It also shows who the two main characters are in the film. This attracts many wider audiences because both actors have a an exceeding reputation in the film industry with a different audiences. Morgan Freeman fans could be older and possibly have many African-Americans amongst them. Whereas Gerard Butler fans would be younger and possibly be made up of more White Americans. The movie title is in red, which could symbolize the danger and death that would be portrayed in the film. The release date is put underneath in a much smaller font. This is to inform the audience of when they could watch the film, which may bring a lot of viewers upon its release. The background is a grey sky. The dull color could symbolize loss/despondency and a sad atmosphere which the film may portray. In contrast to the whitehouse with light shining on it. This could mean that there is still a sense of hope and purity through the sad atmosphere conveyed. This gives the audience a very basic understanding of what the plot could be. They may now know what could happen in the film, which could get them invested out of interest. Both actors are put on the cover. Judging by the fact that the first guy is looking down with upset facial expressions, he has been through something tough. He is wearing a vest and holding a gun. From this the audience can infer that he is fighting some sort of danger that could have cause a lot of damage to the character. The Actor behind him is looking to his right with a serious look on his face and is wearing a suit. His pose gives the impression that he could be working with the first guy as a partner and the balck suit could represent power and knowledge.
