The Golden Colour Of The Sun
The city of Estha lay sparkling on the hill side under the fading rays of the late evening sun.
The tall tower of Akavarius, the God of Victory and the mythical founder of the Devou dynasty, which
was the pinnacle of the royal palace, rose like a fiery beacon over the capital city of the Kingdom of
Atsmaria. The domed top of the tower was crowned with copper sheets, designed by ancient engineers
to blaze with a reddish glow whenever the sun rose or set, as it did now. The golden colour cast a sharp
contrast to the dull hues of the cliff side upon which it was perched, differing from the grey defensive
walls, tall battlements and bastions of indomitable stone which overlooked the brownish–green hues of
the rocky slopes. The approach to the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His body was wrought with hard muscle from the exertions of campaign and the soldier's life, not
having the time to reap the comforts and luxuries such a Kingship should have brought in more
peaceful times. Long dark hair was slicked back and tied in a bun behind his head and the same hue
adorned his beard which was neatly trimmed, covering his face and jawline from ear to ear. Not many
could withstand his firmness unless they too be stone of heart in their chests, for Vasilios was a hard
man.
He was adorned much as his soldiers were, his rank and status differing from the common soldiery only
by the presence of a golden crown set about his conical helm. He wore a knee–length tunic of silvery
chainmail set upon a sable robe, tucked into his fur–lined boots. At his waist dangled a longsword, its
pommel jeweled and its blade sharp, while his other side carried the kite–shaped shield that many foot
soldiers carried. He had a surcoat of brass which gleamed like gold under the sun, giving him a majestic
appearance which well suited the divine origins his father and ancestors long placed upon their lineage.
Like any Devou, Vasilios could and did claim descent from the might god Akavarius, who was
considered to be the very first King of Atsmaria, over a millennia ago. It was believed not only by the
royal family, but the teeming hundreds of thousands of people who lived within Atsmaria.

Essay on The Kiss of the Fur Queen
Thomson Highway's The Kiss of the Fur Queen has a core theme of art. In this novel, art is integrated
into the lives of the characters. The modernist movement would indicate that art has the ability to
plainly exist "art of arts sake". Peter Lamarque notes "To value a work for its own sake is to value it for
what it is in itself, not for the realization of some ulterior ends." (par. 19) This commonly accepted
view, that art is valued because it is great art, not for the role or function that it has in society, restricts
arts impact. This perspective limits and does not allow for the surfacing of profound effects that art
creates. In the Kiss of the Fur Queen, art has power it does not simply exist but has function. The
observable function ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Later Jeremiah stumbles on a similar scene of a bar that contains "men and women, all dark skin, of
hair, of eye, like Jeremiah, all drunk and senseless, unlike Jeremiah." (105). Peering into these "oozing"
"filthy" (105) doorways he is reminded of the "great chart with tunnels and caves and forbidden
pleasures" (105). The work of art that was viewed at a young age educated him on cultural stereotypes.
Jeremiah made the association with people of color and hell that continued into adolescence. This
association went far enough that as Jeremiah passed that bar he looked for the "horned creatures" (105)
inside. This is a specific example that demonstrates that art can function as an educational tool. A less
concert extension of this is "The Hell Hotel" (130). This image continues to associate native people
with "madness [and] drinkers" (130). Again Jeremiah learned at a young age, though art, a cultural
association. This image not only has the "B apparently dammed to H by mechanical malfunction" (130)
but also has the First Nations people dammed to Hell from a yearly association of art. In The Kiss of
the Fur Queen a significant piece of art that was used as a teaching tool was the poster of heaven and
hell. This art intentionally taught about Theology and inadvertently embedded damaging cultural
associations towards Native Peoples.
Secondly, although art can function to educate it can also function towards providing identity. Art

Kiss Of The Fur Queen Poetic Techniques
In the passage, Kiss of The Fur Queen, Highway uses many literary devices such as imagery and
diction of a variety of words to dramatize Okimasis experience in the race. In the first paragraph,
Highway begins by depicting the image of what Okimasis was experiencing during the race. "Through
the rising vapour of a northern Manitoba February, so crisp, so dry, the snow creaked underfoot, the
caribou hunter Abraham Okimasis drove his sled and team of eight grey huskies through the orange–
rose–tinted dusk." By giving the readers grimy details like this, Highway pulls the readers and force
them to picture the scene and experience the struggles the Okimasis is experiencing. Later on in the
passage, Highway continues to depict the okimasis experience "One hundred and fifty miles of low–
treed tundra, ice–covered lakes, all blanketed with at least two feet of snow–fifty miles per day–a
hundred and fifty miles of freezing temperatures and freezing winds." In this portion of ... Show more

He uses certain words that makes the experience more vivid. The diction gives the reader a view of
Okimasis sense of desperation and the toll of the race on Okimasis. "The desperation in his voice, like a
man about to sob." This shows the reader Okimasis is motivated and is determined to win but the
struggle that he is going through is very tough and can cost him the race. "he was not leading. What
mattered was that he was not going to win the race." Highway allows the reader to picture Okimasis
experience and also see what Okimasis is thinking during the race. Highway uses a repetition of words
that Okimasis uses and each time the word " Mush" he gives an example of what Okimasis experience.
"Mush!" the hunter cried into the wind." "Mush!" he cried, "mush." The desperation in his voice,.."
Highway shows that this is the only line that Okimasis uses so it shows Okimasis desperation in trying

A Fairy Tale
Once upon a time, when magic was still in common use, on the far side of the world there lived a King
and Queen of a fair but isolated realm, situated beyond a great chain of mountains, whose snow–capped
peaks cast long shadows into the valley below when the sun rose at morning. The King and Queen had
only one daughter, whom they loved very much, for they had been married a long time and it was
thought they might never bring forth a child. When she was born there was rejoicing throughout the
realm. The peasants celebrated the joy of their sovereign with gifts of hydrangea–blossoms and
honeyed cakes, left on the great staircase in front of the palace, while the local nobility brought gifts in
tribute, of jeweled baubles and damask draperies fit for the bedroom of a princess. The King in his
happiness declared that the princess, whom he named Anatine, had brought such joy to the kingdom
that he would never wish to see her unhappy therefore it was declared that, contrary to custom, when it
came time for her to marry the girl would have the right to refuse any suitor whom she did not find
pleasing. He made this declaration to his subjects while standing on the great staircase, in sight of all he
swore as an oath that the girl herself should have choice of whom she would wed. For twenty years, the
marriage of Anatine was the subject of much conversation within the kingdom. Washerwomen by the
river would gossip about the noblemen who might seek the hand of the princess, and

bobbed up and down. "Does that mean you're my father now, Sir Gawain? Because I want that." He
asked hastily, "But can I have two fathers?" Gawain had expected this question, but he had never
formulated a suitable reply, which forced him to speak from the heart. "You can have two fathers, the
one who helped create you and the one who helped raise you. But we must never forget your father,
Barri, and honor him whenever we can." "I can leave an offering at the Goddess Table for him at the
Harvest Festival, and you won't be cross?" Gawain's throat tightened with emotion. "Never. I'll leave an
offering, too. I owe much to your father. His passing brought you and your mother into my life, so I
will honor him until I die." "When the day comes, and you see my father in the Other World, what will
you say?" "That's easy. I'll hug him and thank

imagery, detailed descriptions, comparisons and intense diction. The passage begins by revealing
Okimasis' despair and anguish which serves to set the scene. Highway presents the image of Okimasis

The mention of his wife and "the silver cup, that holy chalice that was to be his twenty–first
anniversary gift to her" shows another reason why this race is important to him–his home life and
beliefs. The fact that the hunter is a "Roman Catholic" is mentioned, shows how spiritual the race is for
him, overstating the significance of the situation. The metaphor of the prize being compared to "a holy
chalice" emphasises the prestige of the prize and also the fear of letting his religion and his wife down,
which the readers can relate to. By talking about Okimasis' home situation, the readers are more
anxious to know what is happening in the race right then. This makes that fact "Okimasis edged past
number 54" a more joyful moment. The fact that names like "Jackson Butler of Flin Flon" shows the
clarity of mind that he has after remembering his home life unlike before when he only thought of the
number of the

Neither a Mule nor a Queen
Neither a Mule nor Queen Have you ever felt like you had no say on anything you do? Have you ever
been a relationship where you had no voice? In the novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora
Neale Hurston, Janie, the protagonist, goes through the same thing. Janie goes from being a young girl
to being a strong, independent woman. She marries multiple men trying to find the one who will make
her dream of love come true. Janie begins her quest of finding the right man at a very young age. As
she continues to grow, she realizes that she wants more than love in a man. She learned that she wanted
to be free and have her own voice. All three marriages were necessary in order for Janie to become a
strong and independent woman.
In the beginning of the novel, it is seen that Janie starts to be curious about her womanhood. After the
kiss with Johnny Taylor her grandmother, Nanny, forces Janie to marry Logan Killicks, so that Logan
could take good care of her "De nigger woman is de' mule uh de world so fur as Ah can see"(Hurston

In Janie's first marriage with, Logan Killicks, a wealthy but much older land owner, in the beginning of
her journey to finding who she is meant to become. "Janie's first dream was dead, so she became a

Explore the similarities and differences in the presentation of female characters in A Streetcar Named
Desire and The World's wife
In this essay, I will be exploring the similarities and differences of female characters in 'A Streetcar
Named Desire' by Tennessee Williams; and 'The World's Wife' by Carol Ann Duffy. Both texts denote
women as somewhat weak and incompetent and as having a predatory attitude towards the mainly
dominant male characters. A Streetcar Named Desire was written in 1945 and it initially connected with
America's new found taste for realism following the Great Depression and World War II. William's
based the character of Blanche on his sister who was diagnosed with schizophrenia. Williams himself
was homosexual, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In 'A Streetcar Named Desire', the reader is able to see Stella fulfil the role of a protective mother when
agreeing to send Blanche to a mental institution. Despite Blanches shocking accusations, Stella must
ignore her sister for the sake of her child. Eunice says to her 'you done the right thing, the only thing
you could do.' The reader is able to see the role of a female friend. In this case Eunice supports Stella
through the difficult time. This is similar to 'Queen Herod' as in the poem, Duffy shows her as having a
lack of sense when it comes down to her baby daughter. 'Kill each mother's son. Do it. Spare not one.'
Her sheer ruthlessness has been brought to light. In 'Queen Herod', Duffy also makes references to
friendship and sisterhood. 'The black Queen scooped out my breast,' this quote shows that women are
willing to help each other in their times of need.
The traditional qualities of a wife are subverted in 'Medusa'. Duffy presents Medusa as a woman who
has been engulfed by jealousy, caused by her adulterous husband. 'My brides breath soured stank in the
grey bags of my lungs.' This quote displays that Medusa was once young and beautiful, but as a result
of marriage has become hideous. This contrasts with the character of Stella in 'A Streetcar Named
Desire', who is a devoted and loving wife despite the way Stanley behaves towards her.' He didn't know

Highway uses very vivid images to show how hard Okimasis' tries to win the dog sled race because he
has so much to lose. He exposes the true motivation behind winning the race. We learn of Okimasis'
broken marriage, and his promise to his wife that "he would win the world championship just for her:
the silver cup, that holy chalice was to be his twenty–first–anniversary gift to her." It is through this
selection of detail that we can see it is more than just a race for Okimasis. Winning it would win back
his wife; while losing it would mark that definite failure in his marriage. Once this is realized, we can
go back to the beginning of the passage and see how Highway connects all aspects of the race to
Okimasis' marriage. "A hundred and fifty miles of freezing temperatures and freezing winds. And the
finish line mere yards ahead.," signifies the last several years he' been married and how although it was
a struggle and may not have been the easiest thing, he accomplished a lot and invested much of his time
and energy into those years. Highway also uses pace in an attempt to show the length of the race and
how the obstacles seem endless. He does this by writing a long sentence with multiple pauses when
explaining the journey Okimasis has already completed, and follows that up with a very short sentence
that explains the relief of finishing the race.In the end, however,

Summary Of Kiss Of The Fur Queen
The erasure of culture begins with the erasure of language and identity. Throughout modern history, the
"dominant" culture seeks to eliminate other cultures under the guise of them being uncivilized or
savage. Missionaries were used to spread the dominant religion, laws were made in the United States to
move Native Americans onto reserves to help 'settle them', names of both indigenous people and
immigrants were changed to fit to erase culture, children were sent to residential schools so they too
could become like the good, little, white boys and girls. In Leona Makokis' piece "Disordered
Dependencies", she focuses on her experiences in a residential school in Canada to illustrate the impact
of colonization, focusing on the loss of language. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
From the beginning, he uses Cree terms that would appear strange and practically unpronounceable to
readers that are unfamiliar with indigenous culture, creating a disparity between the accessible and
inaccessible names he uses throughout the novel. As pointed out by Van Essen in her essay about
Highway's use of Cree language in Kiss of the Fur Queen in the case of one place name in particular:
"By using the original Cree name Oopaskooyak, Highway is reversing colonial appropriation and
possession and reasserting Cree cultural memory by recalling the names that have been erased by the
colonizing language(s)" (Van Essen). In the naming and then remaining of Gabriel Okimasis, Highway
is demonstrating how these Cree names are used to give identity but then erased in favor of an
appropriate Christian name. This mirrors the ways place names are appropriated and changed to favor
the dominant culture rather than respecting the culture that already existed. In this way, Highway is
giving the reader a way to understand this process and connect with it. Names are a very personal
marker of identity and the notion that someone has the power to change another person's

Prologue To A Brave New World
Prolog
In the dark of morning, just before the sun started to rise, King Goddric looked out on the fields of the
north. His kingdom was vast and beautiful. Memories of his long years came like sparks from a fire to
give light to his dark mood. His foul mood wasn't something that overtook him occasionally, this was
the deep sadness born from time. In his years as king his choices were not easy. They have caused his
kin to turn against him. For what seemed like the millionth time in the last 15 years, he wondered if he

Tira was a pain in Bren's side, had been since they were children. 'How can she think to judge me?' She
fumed, 'She goes off with that old creepy elf most mornings to do gods know what in the fields and she
think she can claim superiority to me?!' Bren rolled her eyes at the audacity of 'that girl'.
Bren shouldn't have to put up with all of these stupid girls. She was marked! The blackbird on her left
hand made her better than the rest. Besides, she knew the king himself held the blackbird. Or at least,
that's what she believed. She had spent enough nights with enough elven to glean that one of the
brothers had it.
Not that any of the other girls mattered anymore, in a day or two the king would come out of his camp
and they would all know the truth. She would be Queen. Tira and Aaryn and their lackeys would not be
able to speak one word agents her in fear of her station. The thought made her smile. She deserved to

Rock And Roll Research Papers
Music has been around for ages, it has defined events, countries, and generations. According to the
British Broadcasting Channel, the first musical instruments appeared about 40,000 years ago. Caveman
music has not defined so many lives, but Rock and Roll has. The Merriam–Webster Dictionary defines
the term as "Rock Music". Urban Dictionary gives a clearer definition, "Gods gift to man on the 8th
day". Rock and Roll is a genre of music which usually incorporates electric guitar, bass, drums, and
vocals. Rock and Roll, also known as Rock 'n Roll or Rock, is known for being catchy and simple. At
the time of its birth, in the mid 1950s, Rock 'n Roll was a brand new sound that differed from jazz,
classical, and blues music. Since then, Rock music has evolved in an unpredictable way which has
created countless subgenres of Rock. With its evolution, Rock has past its prime. No longer are the
musicians of Rock, or Rock Stars, considered the idols they are. Since the takeover of Pop music,
defined in the Urban Dictionary as, "Probably the worst, most degrading music ... Show more content

Websites like Bandcamp and Soundcloud give aspiring artists a chance to reach new listeners,
promoters, and strengthen their music. As of December 2012, Quora reported that Bandcamp, a website
where aspiring artists and bands post their music for sale, has over 348,000 bands/artists on their
website. Each of these bands have some form of original or cover music on their profile. Genres range
from rock to rap and from experimental to spoken word. Bandcamp offers a place where artists and
consumers can interact almost directly. Soundcloud is similar to Bandcamp as it offers a place for
artists to give their music direct to the consumer, but Soundcloud is free. These two websites give those
hip kids who listen to Rock a place to find new and upcoming bands. In the interview with Andy
Babiuk, Andy talked about the difficulty of modern Rock bands to find

Essay on Kiss of the Fur Queen
In Kiss of the Fur Queen, the story begins with forty–three year old Cree hunter Abraham Okimasis
winning the "1951 Millington Cup World Championship Dog Derby." (6) The victory is seen to have a
significant effect on the Cree hunter's Native identity, as he becomes the first–ever Indian to succeed in
the Derby. As time goes by, Abraham becomes the father of two sons, Jeremiah and Gabriel. When the
Cree brothers leave their small northern Manitoba village and enter the hostile environment of a
residential school, their lives take a turn for the worse. Estranged from their Native culture, Jeremiah
and Gabriel are forced to assimilate into the predominately white Canadian society. During their stay at
the residential school, the brothers ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Jeremiah an avid musician, learns to sing to the caribou at a young age, while playing the accordion at
the same time. At the residential school, Jeremiah develops a passion for playing the piano, as he
successfully captures the "astonished" priest "squarely in the palm of his hand." (67) Gabriel, on the
other hand, prefers the mesmerizing movements of dance. Early in the novel, Gabriel is be seen moving
like a young caribou, sticking his "little arms above his head," while lifting his "left leg so high for the
first step." (41) After watching an inspiring, "beat by beat" (144) ballet performance at the New Year's
Eve Gala, Gabriel realizes his teenage dream of becoming a professional ballet dancer. He ends up
being very successful, and travels around the world to demonstrate his abilities. As the brothers pursue
their western artistic talents, they turn back on their Native Cree identity. Gabriel, the younger of two
Okimasis brothers, discovers that life in residential school is very different from the magical life back
home. It does not take long for Gabriel to suffer his first episode of abuse at the hands of the Catholic
priest, as Jeremiah witnesses the priest sexually molesting his brother in the darkness of the night. A
second incident of abuse occurs when Gabriel gets caned for singing "Kimmosoom Chimasoo" while
"hanging from the cross." Strangely enough, Gabriel is seen to

A Short Story : A Story?
Thirty–Six After tapping lightly on her grandmother's bedroom door, Allie waited; She, too, figured the
reason her grandmother wanted her to come up was to tell her something about the Family Bible; what
else could it be. Allie was frightened and excited at the same time. "Come on in," her grandmother
called. Allie opened the door but froze at the vision of her grandmother who was sitting at her desk with
the Bible open. At least she has changed out of those drab, uncomfortable clothes and into her
nightgown, thought Allie, staring at her grandmother's back. "Don't just stand there gawking, come in
and close the door." "Yes'um," Allie mumbled, stepping into the room and closing the door behind her.
She walked to the middle of the room and stopped. "Pull that chair over here and sit beside me." Doing
as told, Allie pulled the chair near her grandmother– leaving a chair's width between them as was
proper. "Get closer," grumbled her grandmother, "You need to be able to see what I'm going to show
you." There were half a dozen pages in the Bible that were marked with bookmarks. As soon as her
grandmother was satisfied that Allie was close enough to see what she wanted to show her, she opened
the Bible to a page that was marked with a pale yellow ribbon strung from the top of the page to the
bottom of the page. "The loose pages here in the front contains a record of the birth of all my children–
who each one married and a record of the birth of their children and what

The Effects Of Colonialism In Kiss Of The Fur Queen
"Colonialism is complex, for sure, but it is also simple in that it falsely promotes the superiority of
Europeans over Indigenous people." – Wenona Victor, an oppressed Aboriginal who created a
"decolonizing dialogue." Many Canadians' do not feel comfortable bringing up the tragic events of the
past committed against the Aboriginal people's, consequently, somebody needed to bring these topics to
light. Thompson Highway's, Kiss of the Fur Queen, examines the effects of colonial violence prevalent
during Canada's Aboriginal cultural genocide and the negative lasting ramifications on those
individuals a part of the effected community. By raising these difficult issues, he exemplifies the
importance of language, names, and membership to a collective group in regard to identity as without
these, socially dysfunctional individuals are formed. Highway's book illustrates that the isolation
created through colonial violence needs to be solved through discussions, retributions, and integration
of different cultures in Canada. By discussing determinants of identity through theoretical
methodologies, this paper will show the significance of partaking as a member of a collective group, as
well as consider sources that aid in demonstrating the effects of oppression and how embracing
different beliefs is imperative to creating a Canada that is inclusive and has integrated Aboriginal
philosophy into the countries systems. Highway, through the growth of Ooneemeetoo/Gabriel and

Tomson Highway Diction
Cree novelist and playwright, Tomson Highway, carefully crafts the opening of his novel, Kiss of the
Fur Queen by inciting a sense of urgency, suspense, and hope. Highway portrays Okimasis' dramatic
dogsledding experience through the use of his syntax and distance diction. Highway's syntax which
incorporates parallelism and interjections helps develop the urgency in the beginning stages of the
story. Highway uses one–word interjections such as "mush" to emphasize the desperation in Okimasis
voice and show his determination to win the race in hopes of gaining the "holy chalice". Along with
interjections Highway also uses parallelism to dramatize the situation and add suspense for the reader.
In the beginning lines of the passage, Highway writes, "so crisp, so dry"; this parallelism aids the
establishment of the setting which is of key importance to the storyline. In the 3rd paragraph Highway
states, "he was so tired, his dogs beyond tired, so tired." At this point in the story, the reader might
assume that Okimasis will give up. The emphasis Highway puts on his exhaustion allows the audience
to feel sympathy for Okimasis and mentally root for him toward the finish line. As ... Show more

Highway writes statements such as, "And the finish line mere yards ahead" and "Half a mile to the
finish line–he could see the banner now..." in order to establish a sense of desperation. By adding these
increments to the finish line, Highway develops a mental image of how close Okimasis is to winning
while also increasing the uncertainty of the situation. In the last sentence of the passage, Highway
declares, "Mushers numbers 32 and 17, so close, so far." This contradictory statement of his
competitors being "so close" yet "so far" advances Okimasis' fear of being beaten and adds to his

The Analysis of the Mythic dimension in 'A Streetcar Named Desired' Background This paper tells

In scene seven of the play Stella Kowalski says the following: "...you've got to realize that Blanche and
I grew up under very different circumstances than you did" (Williams, 99). With this sentence Williams
introduces a possible starting point for an analysis of the Southern belle myth. The figure of the
Southern belle is founded on a canonized discourse, resting on a cultural and social personification – a
description, a code, a stereotype – which legitimizes and authorizes the interpretation of culture and
nature, masculinity and femininity, superiority and inferiority, power and subordination. In other words,
the Southern belle stereotype is based on a fear that women "might escape the rule of the patriarchy,
that the oppositions of white/black, master/slave, lady/whore, even male/female might collapse into an
anarchic conflagration threatening to bring down the symbolic order" (Roberts, xii). Additionally, this
Southern woman stereotype is both a literature–generating principle, often supporting the very concept
of Southern fiction, and a social construct, supporting the writing of Southern history and culture. In
both cases it has to be read "against the South that created [it] for different social purposes, or
reinvented [it] at crucial moments in history" (Roberts, xii) providing insight "into anxieties and
aspirations of the culture" (Roberts, xii). Before I show how Williams approached this myth

Comparing Lightfinder And Tomson Highway's Kiss Of The Fur...
Aaron Paquette's Lightfinder (2014) and Tomson Highway's Kiss of the Fur Queen (1998) are two
novels that follow a set of siblings in a fictional context, focusing on their journeys, challenges, and
accomplishments as Aboriginal youth. Highway's Kiss of the Fur Queen follows the Okimasis brothers,
Jeremiah and Gabriel, and the struggles they face as they were forced into the inhospitable environment
of a Catholic residential school. Paquette's Lightfinder follows the Cardinal siblings, Aisling and Eric,
while focusing on Aisling's journey with her grandmother Kokum Georgia, Aunty Martha, as well as
two young men, Matari and Jake, as they hope to find Aisling's brother Eric, who has run away with his
friend Cor. As the two novels express two ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
You're dead, Jeremiah. At least my body is still alive." (207). Through these quotations, it is evident
that Jeremiah does not accept or understand the context of homosexuality, which creates a negative
influence on Gabriel. As Jeremiah does not accept or understand the context of homosexuality, while
Gabriel does, the two have opposing beliefs on the subject, which creates two different kinds of
influences on each other. Instead of trying to understand and support his brother, Jeremiah seems to be
one–sided towards this topic, as he stands firm with his beliefs. The two novels, Highway's Kiss of the
Fur Queen and Paquette's Lightfinder follow two different sets of relationships between the two
siblings. In Paquette's Lightfinder, Aisling and Eric, expressed more of a distant relationship between
each other, and are influenced by those who play a dominant role in their two different journeys. On the
other hand, in Highway's Kiss of the Fur Queen, Jeremiah and Gabriel expressed more of a close–knit
relationship, although they did not see eye–to–eye on certain concepts. As a result, however, the
brothers are not only influenced by each other, but they also learn from each other, creating both

Native American Substance Abuse Research Paper
Kristine Buist
English 494 Final Paper
May 1, 2016
Substance Abuse on Native American Reservations and in Literature Several of the books we have
covered over the course of this semester have dealt with the pervasive substance abuse that occurs on
many modern reservations. There are many reasons for this substance abuse, but one thing is certain:
this is a real and pressing problem for tribal leaders in the country today. Tribes must find a way to
understand and address the issues that cause the substance abuse, in order to handle this issue now and
try and reduce or prevent it in the future.
When we look at substance abuse, there are many different reasons people start using. I am a 16–year
veteran of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In many ways, the parents do this unconsciously or unintentionally, simply indoctrinating the children
into that culture by their own way of life. An example of that is Rowdy in The Absolutely True Diary of
a Part Time Indian "His father is drinking hard and throwing hard punches, so Rowdy and his mother
are always walking around with bruised and bloody faces" (Alexie 16). Rowdy will grow up knowing
no differently, and will likely be just like his dad. I worked in child abuse for over 4 years while on the
police department, and many times, there is a correlation between abusers and those who have been
abused. "Overall, abused and neglected subjects had higher rates than did controls for adult criminality
and arrests for violent offenses, but not for adult arrests for child abuse or neglect" (Wisdom). Rowdy
will likely grow up to be violent and commit acts of domestic violence or other types of physical
violence, just like his dad. The movie we viewed Rhymes for Young Ghouls, also shows the correlation
between what children are exposed to when they are young and what they think is normal behavior as
an adult. Ayla, the main character, is exposed to her parent's marijuana selling operation as a child, and
as result grows up thinking that making money that way is normal. She also takes the violence
associated with it in stride. I found some of the violence in this movie shocking, but then I didn't grow
up this way. In some cases, children are deliberately introduced to alcohol or controlled substances by a
parent. The reason given to me by most parents who choose to do this is that they 'didn't want to smoke
or drink alone' so they started their child down the same path. Obviously, this is a criminal act in small
children, and the youngest I have seen deliberately exposed to an illicit drug was toddler aged. The
examples shown by parents shape the way

The Tempest Response Essay
In The Tempest, Ariel and Prospero speak in a manner that has an elegant rhythm to it while Stephano
and Triculo simply spit out words in a less educated manner. This having to do with Prospero and Ariel
being more "wise" or possessing more knowledge. I began writing about language and class differences
in my journal because I found it interesting. Examining that they possess magic while Stephano and
Trinculo are secluded, not having that access to the higher knowledge of the world. This passage relates
back to a lot of ideas and research that I ended up doing for Kiss of the Fur Queen as I found myself
gaining a lot of knowledge about the importance of language and the different "levels" of knowledge or
magic. Champion and Jeremiah were brought up in a different culture and their ways of learning,
traditions, and language were all seen as a lower form of a lifestyle. This severely affects one's self
worth and feeling of collective identity. Also when I think back to Caliban and how Prospero educated
him so that he would speak and hold "proper" knowledge, I thought more about Prospoero representing
colonization. He can be compared to the Europeans in Kiss of the Fur Queen in that they felt their
culture, knowledge, and values were superior to Aboriginals. Prospero felt he needed to change Caliban
just as the white people felt they needed to change Aboriginals.

The tall tower of Akavarius, the God of Victory and the mythical founder of the Devou dynasty, which was the pinnacle of the royal palace, rose like a fiery beacon over the capital city of the Kingdom of Atsmaria. The domed top of the tower was crowned with copper sheets, designed by ancient engineers to blaze with a reddish glow whenever the sun rose or set, as it did now. The golden colour cast a sharp contrast to the dull hues of the cliff side upon which it was perched, differing from the grey defensive walls, tall battlements and bastions of indomitable stone which overlooked the brownish–green hues of the rocky slopes. The approach to the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His body was wrought with hard muscle from the exertions of campaign and the soldier's life, not having the time to reap the comforts and luxuries such a Kingship should have brought in more peaceful times. Long dark hair was slicked back and tied in a bun behind his head and the same hue adorned his beard which was neatly trimmed, covering his face and jawline from ear to ear. Not many could withstand his firmness unless they too be stone of heart in their chests, for Vasilios was a hard man. He was adorned much as his soldiers were, his rank and status differing from the common soldiery only by the presence of a golden crown set about his conical helm. He wore a knee–length tunic of silvery chainmail set upon a sable robe, tucked into his fur–lined boots. At his waist dangled a longsword, its pommel jeweled and its blade sharp, while his other side carried the kite–shaped shield that many foot soldiers carried. He had a surcoat of brass which gleamed like gold under the sun, giving him a majestic appearance which well suited the divine origins his father and ancestors long placed upon their lineage. Like any Devou, Vasilios could and did claim descent from the might god Akavarius, who was considered to be the very first King of Atsmaria, over a millennia ago. It was believed not only by the royal family, but the teeming hundreds of thousands of people who lived within Atsmaria. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Essay on The Kiss of the Fur Queen Thomson Highway's The Kiss of the Fur Queen has a core theme of art. In this novel, art is integrated into the lives of the characters. The modernist movement would indicate that art has the ability to plainly exist "art of arts sake". Peter Lamarque notes "To value a work for its own sake is to value it for what it is in itself, not for the realization of some ulterior ends." (par. 19) This commonly accepted view, that art is valued because it is great art, not for the role or function that it has in society, restricts arts impact. This perspective limits and does not allow for the surfacing of profound effects that art creates. In the Kiss of the Fur Queen, art has power it does not simply exist but has function. The observable function ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Later Jeremiah stumbles on a similar scene of a bar that contains "men and women, all dark skin, of hair, of eye, like Jeremiah, all drunk and senseless, unlike Jeremiah." (105). Peering into these "oozing" "filthy" (105) doorways he is reminded of the "great chart with tunnels and caves and forbidden pleasures" (105). The work of art that was viewed at a young age educated him on cultural stereotypes. Jeremiah made the association with people of color and hell that continued into adolescence. This association went far enough that as Jeremiah passed that bar he looked for the "horned creatures" (105) inside. This is a specific example that demonstrates that art can function as an educational tool. A less concert extension of this is "The Hell Hotel" (130). This image continues to associate native people with "madness [and] drinkers" (130). Again Jeremiah learned at a young age, though art, a cultural association. This image not only has the "B apparently dammed to H by mechanical malfunction" (130) but also has the First Nations people dammed to Hell from a yearly association of art. In The Kiss of the Fur Queen a significant piece of art that was used as a teaching tool was the poster of heaven and hell. This art intentionally taught about Theology and inadvertently embedded damaging cultural associations towards Native Peoples. Secondly, although art can function to educate it can also function towards providing identity. Art enables ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. Kiss Of The Fur Queen Poetic Techniques In the passage, Kiss of The Fur Queen, Highway uses many literary devices such as imagery and diction of a variety of words to dramatize Okimasis experience in the race. In the first paragraph, Highway begins by depicting the image of what Okimasis was experiencing during the race. "Through the rising vapour of a northern Manitoba February, so crisp, so dry, the snow creaked underfoot, the caribou hunter Abraham Okimasis drove his sled and team of eight grey huskies through the orange– rose–tinted dusk." By giving the readers grimy details like this, Highway pulls the readers and force them to picture the scene and experience the struggles the Okimasis is experiencing. Later on in the passage, Highway continues to depict the okimasis experience "One hundred and fifty miles of low– treed tundra, ice–covered lakes, all blanketed with at least two feet of snow–fifty miles per day–a hundred and fifty miles of freezing temperatures and freezing winds." In this portion of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He uses certain words that makes the experience more vivid. The diction gives the reader a view of Okimasis sense of desperation and the toll of the race on Okimasis. "The desperation in his voice, like a man about to sob." This shows the reader Okimasis is motivated and is determined to win but the struggle that he is going through is very tough and can cost him the race. "he was not leading. What mattered was that he was not going to win the race." Highway allows the reader to picture Okimasis experience and also see what Okimasis is thinking during the race. Highway uses a repetition of words that Okimasis uses and each time the word " Mush" he gives an example of what Okimasis experience. "Mush!" the hunter cried into the wind." "Mush!" he cried, "mush." The desperation in his voice,.." Highway shows that this is the only line that Okimasis uses so it shows Okimasis desperation in trying to when the ... • 17. A Fairy Tale Once upon a time, when magic was still in common use, on the far side of the world there lived a King and Queen of a fair but isolated realm, situated beyond a great chain of mountains, whose snow–capped peaks cast long shadows into the valley below when the sun rose at morning. The King and Queen had only one daughter, whom they loved very much, for they had been married a long time and it was thought they might never bring forth a child. When she was born there was rejoicing throughout the realm. The peasants celebrated the joy of their sovereign with gifts of hydrangea–blossoms and honeyed cakes, left on the great staircase in front of the palace, while the local nobility brought gifts in tribute, of jeweled baubles and damask draperies fit for the bedroom of a princess. The King in his happiness declared that the princess, whom he named Anatine, had brought such joy to the kingdom that he would never wish to see her unhappy therefore it was declared that, contrary to custom, when it came time for her to marry the girl would have the right to refuse any suitor whom she did not find pleasing. He made this declaration to his subjects while standing on the great staircase, in sight of all he swore as an oath that the girl herself should have choice of whom she would wed. For twenty years, the marriage of Anatine was the subject of much conversation within the kingdom. Washerwomen by the river would gossip about the noblemen who might seek the hand of the princess, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

"This feels so strange, the reality of it." "Does it?" Gawain cocked his head to the side. "Or does it feel just right?" "I feel excited, mostly, but I'm nervous about the changes. Wallace's knees bobbed up and down. "Does that mean you're my father now, Sir Gawain? Because I want that." He asked hastily, "But can I have two fathers?" Gawain had expected this question, but he had never formulated a suitable reply, which forced him to speak from the heart. "You can have two fathers, the one who helped create you and the one who helped raise you. But we must never forget your father, Barri, and honor him whenever we can." "I can leave an offering at the Goddess Table for him at the Harvest Festival, and you won't be cross?" Gawain's throat tightened with emotion. "Never. I'll leave an offering, too. Summary Of Kiss Of The Fur Queen By Tomson Highway In the passage from the novel Kiss of the Fur Queen, the author Tomson Highway presents the main character, Okimasis', thrilling experience in a tasteful manner. The author constantly shifts the angles and tone of the passage, in a way that has a profound effect on the reader. Highway dramatizes Okimasis' physical and emotional journey through the tundra, which is portrayed through sensory imagery, detailed descriptions, comparisons and intense diction. The passage begins by revealing Okimasis' despair and anguish which serves to set the scene. Highway presents the image of Okimasis "urging his huskies forward" to embellish the race. The mention of his wife and "the silver cup, that holy chalice that was to be his twenty–first anniversary gift to her" shows another reason why this race is important to him–his home life and beliefs. The fact that the hunter is a "Roman Catholic" is mentioned, shows how spiritual the race is for him, overstating the significance of the situation. The metaphor of the prize being compared to "a holy chalice" emphasises the prestige of the prize and also the fear of letting his religion and his wife down, which the readers can relate to. By talking about Okimasis' home situation, the readers are more anxious to know what is happening in the race right then. This makes that fact "Okimasis edged past number 54" a more joyful moment. The fact that names like "Jackson Butler of Flin Flon" shows the clarity of mind that he has after remembering his home life unlike before when he only thought of the number of the ... Highway utilizes a fantastic variety of literary devices to dramatize Okimasis' physical and emotional experience through his last leg of the race by creating a powerfully intense atmosphere through the effective use of descriptive imagery, passionate diction, repetition of words, and a tone of desperation. Explore the similarities and differences in the presentation of female characters in A Streetcar Named Desire and The World's wife In this essay, I will be exploring the similarities and differences of female characters in 'A Streetcar Named Desire' by Tennessee Williams; and 'The World's Wife' by Carol Ann Duffy. Both texts denote women as somewhat weak and incompetent and as having a predatory attitude towards the mainly dominant male characters. A Streetcar Named Desire was written in 1945 and it initially connected with America's new found taste for realism following the Great Depression and World War II. William's based the character of Blanche on his sister who was diagnosed with schizophrenia. Williams himself was homosexual, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In 'A Streetcar Named Desire', the reader is able to see Stella fulfil the role of a protective mother when agreeing to send Blanche to a mental institution. Despite Blanches shocking accusations, Stella must ignore her sister for the sake of her child. Eunice says to her 'you done the right thing, the only thing you could do.' The reader is able to see the role of a female friend. In this case Eunice supports Stella through the difficult time. This is similar to 'Queen Herod' as in the poem, Duffy shows her as having a lack of sense when it comes down to her baby daughter. 'Kill each mother's son. Do it. Spare not one.' Her sheer ruthlessness has been brought to light. In 'Queen Herod', Duffy also makes references to friendship and sisterhood. 'The black Queen scooped out my breast,' this quote shows that women are willing to help each other in their times of need. The traditional qualities of a wife are subverted in 'Medusa'. Duffy presents Medusa as a woman who has been engulfed by jealousy, caused by her adulterous husband. 'My brides breath soured stank in the grey bags of my lungs.' This quote displays that Medusa was once young and beautiful, but as a result of marriage has become hideous. This contrasts with the character of Stella in 'A Streetcar Named Desire', who is a devoted and loving wife despite the way Stanley behaves towards her.' Tomson Highway Techniques In the Tomson Highway's novel, Kiss of the Fur Queen, the opening passage transports the reader to the harsh, cold, and intense struggle of the caribou hunter, Abraham Okimasis during a championship huskie sled race. Any race often proves to be physically and mentally exhausting for a person, especially like Okimasis who feels he has so much to lose if he doesn't win. Tomson Highway utilizes a variety of literary devices to dramatize Okimasis' physical and emotional experience through his last leg of the race by creating a powerful, aggressive atmosphere through the effective use of descriptive imagery, passionate diction, repetition of words, and a tone of desperation. To begin with, the author utilizes descriptive vivid imagery to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Highway uses very vivid images to show how hard Okimasis' tries to win the dog sled race because he has so much to lose. He exposes the true motivation behind winning the race. We learn of Okimasis' broken marriage, and his promise to his wife that "he would win the world championship just for her: the silver cup, that holy chalice was to be his twenty–first–anniversary gift to her." It is through this selection of detail that we can see it is more than just a race for Okimasis. Winning it would win back his wife; while losing it would mark that definite failure in his marriage. Once this is realized, we can go back to the beginning of the passage and see how Highway connects all aspects of the race to Okimasis' marriage. "A hundred and fifty miles of freezing temperatures and freezing winds. And the finish line mere yards ahead.," signifies the last several years he' been married and how although it was a struggle and may not have been the easiest thing, he accomplished a lot and invested much of his time and energy into those years. Highway also uses pace in an attempt to show the length of the race and how the obstacles seem endless. He does this by writing a long sentence with multiple pauses when explaining the journey Okimasis has already completed, and follows that up with a very short sentence that explains the relief of finishing the race.In the end, however, ... • 33. Summary Of Kiss Of The Fur Queen The erasure of culture begins with the erasure of language and identity. Throughout modern history, the "dominant" culture seeks to eliminate other cultures under the guise of them being uncivilized or savage. Missionaries were used to spread the dominant religion, laws were made in the United States to move Native Americans onto reserves to help 'settle them', names of both indigenous people and immigrants were changed to fit to erase culture, children were sent to residential schools so they too could become like the good, little, white boys and girls. In Leona Makokis' piece "Disordered Dependencies", she focuses on her experiences in a residential school in Canada to illustrate the impact of colonization, focusing on the loss of language. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... From the beginning, he uses Cree terms that would appear strange and practically unpronounceable to readers that are unfamiliar with indigenous culture, creating a disparity between the accessible and inaccessible names he uses throughout the novel. As pointed out by Van Essen in her essay about Highway's use of Cree language in Kiss of the Fur Queen in the case of one place name in particular: "By using the original Cree name Oopaskooyak, Highway is reversing colonial appropriation and possession and reasserting Cree cultural memory by recalling the names that have been erased by the colonizing language(s)" (Van Essen). In the naming and then remaining of Gabriel Okimasis, Highway is demonstrating how these Cree names are used to give identity but then erased in favor of an appropriate Christian name. This mirrors the ways place names are appropriated and changed to favor the dominant culture rather than respecting the culture that already existed. In this way, Highway is giving the reader a way to understand this process and connect with it. Names are a very personal marker of identity and the notion that someone has the power to change another person's ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Memories of his long years came like sparks from a fire to give light to his dark mood. His foul mood wasn't something that overtook him occasionally, this was the deep sadness born from time. In his years as king his choices were not easy. They have caused his kin to turn against him. According to the British Broadcasting Channel, the first musical instruments appeared about 40,000 years ago. Caveman music has not defined so many lives, but Rock and Roll has. The Merriam–Webster Dictionary defines the term as "Rock Music". Urban Dictionary gives a clearer definition, "Gods gift to man on the 8th day". Rock and Roll is a genre of music which usually incorporates electric guitar, bass, drums, and vocals. Rock and Roll, also known as Rock 'n Roll or Rock, is known for being catchy and simple. At the time of its birth, in the mid 1950s, Rock 'n Roll was a brand new sound that differed from jazz, classical, and blues music. Since then, Rock music has evolved in an unpredictable way which has created countless subgenres of Rock. With its evolution, Rock has past its prime. As time goes by, Abraham becomes the father of two sons, Jeremiah and Gabriel. When the Cree brothers leave their small northern Manitoba village and enter the hostile environment of a residential school, their lives take a turn for the worse. Allie opened the door but froze at the vision of her grandmother who was sitting at her desk with the Bible open. At least she has changed out of those drab, uncomfortable clothes and into her nightgown, thought Allie, staring at her grandmother's back. "Don't just stand there gawking, come in and close the door." "Yes'um," Allie mumbled, stepping into the room and closing the door behind her. She walked to the middle of the room and stopped. The Effects Of Colonialism In Kiss Of The Fur Queen "Colonialism is complex, for sure, but it is also simple in that it falsely promotes the superiority of Europeans over Indigenous people." – Wenona Victor, an oppressed Aboriginal who created a "decolonizing dialogue." Many Canadians' do not feel comfortable bringing up the tragic events of the past committed against the Aboriginal people's, consequently, somebody needed to bring these topics to light. Thompson Highway's, Kiss of the Fur Queen, examines the effects of colonial violence prevalent during Canada's Aboriginal cultural genocide and the negative lasting ramifications on those individuals a part of the effected community. By raising these difficult issues, he exemplifies the importance of language, names, and membership to a collective group in regard to identity as without these, socially dysfunctional individuals are formed. Highway's book illustrates that the isolation created through colonial violence needs to be solved through discussions, retributions, and integration of different cultures in Canada. By discussing determinants of identity through theoretical methodologies, this paper will show the significance of partaking as a member of a collective group, as well as consider sources that aid in demonstrating the effects of oppression and how embracing different beliefs is imperative to creating a Canada that is inclusive and has integrated Aboriginal philosophy into the countries systems. • 45. Tomson Highway Diction Cree novelist and playwright, Tomson Highway, carefully crafts the opening of his novel, Kiss of the Fur Queen by inciting a sense of urgency, suspense, and hope. Highway portrays Okimasis' dramatic dogsledding experience through the use of his syntax and distance diction. Highway's syntax which incorporates parallelism and interjections helps develop the urgency in the beginning stages of the story. Highway uses one–word interjections such as "mush" to emphasize the desperation in Okimasis voice and show his determination to win the race in hopes of gaining the "holy chalice". Along with interjections Highway also uses parallelism to dramatize the situation and add suspense for the reader. In the beginning lines of the passage, Highway writes, "so crisp, so dry"; this parallelism aids the establishment of the setting which is of key importance to the storyline. In the 3rd paragraph Highway states, "he was so tired, his dogs beyond tired, so tired." At this point in the story, the reader might assume that Okimasis will give up. In scene seven of the play Stella Kowalski says the following: "...you've got to realize that Blanche and I grew up under very different circumstances than you did" (Williams, 99). With this sentence Williams introduces a possible starting point for an analysis of the Southern belle myth. The figure of the Southern belle is founded on a canonized discourse, resting on a cultural and social personification – a description, a code, a stereotype – which legitimizes and authorizes the interpretation of culture and nature, masculinity and femininity, superiority and inferiority, power and subordination. In other words, the Southern belle stereotype is based on a fear that women "might escape the rule of the patriarchy, that the oppositions of white/black, master/slave, lady/whore, even male/female might collapse into an anarchic conflagration threatening to bring down the symbolic order" (Roberts, xii). Additionally, this Southern woman stereotype is both a literature–generating principle, often supporting the very concept of Southern fiction, and a social construct, supporting the writing of Southern history and culture. In both cases it has to be read "against the South that created [it] for different social purposes, or reinvented [it] at crucial moments in history" (Roberts, xii) providing insight "into anxieties and aspirations of the culture" (Roberts, xii). Native American Substance Abuse Research Paper Kristine Buist English 494 Final Paper May 1, 2016 Substance Abuse on Native American Reservations and in Literature Several of the books we have covered over the course of this semester have dealt with the pervasive substance abuse that occurs on many modern reservations. There are many reasons for this substance abuse, but one thing is certain: this is a real and pressing problem for tribal leaders in the country today. Tribes must find a way to understand and address the issues that cause the substance abuse, in order to handle this issue now and try and reduce or prevent it in the future. When we look at substance abuse, there are many different reasons people start using. I am a 16–year veteran of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, ... An example of that is Rowdy in The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian "His father is drinking hard and throwing hard punches, so Rowdy and his mother are always walking around with bruised and bloody faces" (Alexie 16). Rowdy will grow up knowing no differently, and will likely be just like his dad. I worked in child abuse for over 4 years while on the police department, and many times, there is a correlation between abusers and those who have been abused. "Overall, abused and neglected subjects had higher rates than did controls for adult criminality and arrests for violent offenses, but not for adult arrests for child abuse or neglect" (Wisdom). Rowdy will likely grow up to be violent and commit acts of domestic violence or other types of physical violence, just like his dad. The movie we viewed Rhymes for Young Ghouls, also shows the correlation between what children are exposed to when they are young and what they think is normal behavior as an adult. Ayla, the main character, is exposed to her parent's marijuana selling operation as a child, and as result grows up thinking that making money that way is normal. She also takes the violence associated with it in stride. I found some of the violence in this movie shocking, but then I didn't grow up this way. In some cases, children are deliberately introduced to alcohol or controlled substances by a parent. The reason given to me by most parents who choose to do this is that they 'didn't want to smoke or drink alone' so they started their child down the same path. Obviously, this is a criminal act in small children, and the youngest I have seen deliberately exposed to an illicit drug was toddler aged. The examples shown by parents shape the way ... • 53. The Tempest Response Essay In The Tempest, Ariel and Prospero speak in a manner that has an elegant rhythm to it while Stephano and Triculo simply spit out words in a less educated manner. This having to do with Prospero and Ariel being more "wise" or possessing more knowledge. I began writing about language and class differences in my journal because I found it interesting. Examining that they possess magic while Stephano and Trinculo are secluded, not having that access to the higher knowledge of the world. This passage relates back to a lot of ideas and research that I ended up doing for Kiss of the Fur Queen as I found myself gaining a lot of knowledge about the importance of language and the different "levels" of knowledge or magic. Champion and Jeremiah were brought up in a different culture and their ways of learning, traditions, and language were all seen as a lower form of a lifestyle. This severely affects one's self worth and feeling of collective identity. Also when I think back to Caliban and how Prospero educated him so that he would speak and hold "proper" knowledge, I thought more about Prospoero representing colonization. He can be compared to the Europeans in Kiss of the Fur Queen in that they felt their culture, knowledge, and values were superior to Aboriginals. Prospero felt he needed to change Caliban just as the white people felt they needed to change Aboriginals. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
