Why do we need to
know about homonyms,
homophones and
homographs?
Homonyms
- the word “homonym” comes from the prefix “homo,” which
means the same, and the suffix “-nym,” which means name.
- are words that sound like but have different meanings and
spellings.
- there are two categories of homonyms, homophones and
homographs.
HOMOPHONES
 are words of the same sound but
different in spelling and meaning.
Example: the words "air" and "heir"
•The prince is the queen's heir.
•I love the fresh air.
Other examples:
Don't waste the remaining paper.
Tie a belt around your waist.
We need rain to end the drought.
The queen has had a long reign.
It was a starry night.

- These words have the same spelling.
- They may or may not have the same sound and meaning.
Example: the words "lead" and "lead"

• The package was as heavy as lead.

• I have been [bean] tired lately.(Canadian accent)
