Southwest Airlines And United Airlines
Mission Statement Analysis
Southwest Airlines and United Airlines have been direct competitors in the airline business for a
number of years. As time has passed, we have seen Southwest take a more Servant Leadership
minded approach, while United decided upon a more traditional style of Leadership. From their
mission statements, along with reviews from flyers and profitability, to the overall culture of the
companies, we look to see how these two airlines compete, and which one comes out on top.
Mission Statements
The mission statement is often publically stated and used by almost every organization today. It
helps provide basic guidelines, essentially the core values of a company, and what they aim for. A
mission statement gives customers ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Not only was the mission statement or core values difficult to find, but the page had a vague title
called "It's how we fly". The page seemed to assume that the reader should just know what United
was about and what they believed. The core values seem placed there simply because it is required,
not because they are values followed by the actual organization. Both Airlines include words about
customer service and treating them well, but Southwest put it simply and concisely. United seemed
more focused on impressing readers with their core values. I believe that the Southwest mission
statement impacts the culture of the organization by being a definition of what it should look like.
Comparatively, I believe that United's core values impact the culture very little if not at all.
Principles
Southwest Airlines is dedicated to incorporating all servant leadership principles throughout their
organization. Accordingly, their mission statement is clear and concise it evidently exemplifies all
principles and acknowledges a servant–led organization. Their mission statement embraces their
commitment to serve the highest quality of customer service through a sense of warmth,
friendliness, individual pride, and company spirit (Southwest, 2014). Therefore, through
Southwest's' mission statement it makes it explicitly apparent that they seek to listen and commit to
the growth of their people. Southwest empathizes with their employees because they are dedicated

Marketing Plan for United Airlines
Airline companies are becoming more and more competitive as the low budget discount airlines are
becoming popular. It is key for airlines to differentiate themselves among the various airlines to
choose from, and United Airlines wanted to ensure that it offered products and services for all
marketing segments. "United realized that it needed to develop a customer–centric future strategy
and galvanize its organization to improve the customer experience for its most valued customers"
(Prophet, 2012, para. 1). This paper discusses the marketing plan for the newly merged ... Show

Like many organizations, United Airlines uses market segmentation to help define the target market
and become a leading choice for airline travelers. United Airline's marketing firm uses
psychographic segmentation, which divides customers according to their lifestyle, as a way to
successfully target specific customers. United Airlines used questionnaires to classify their potential
customers by their motivations and identified nine motivational segment profiles which are: global
executives, schedule optimizers, corporate troopers, mile accumulators, reluctant travelers, tour
takers, quality vacationers, travel seekers, and frugal flyers (The Times 100, 2003, p. 2). The reasons
why travelers choose to fly United varies. For example, some may choose this airline because of
price, while others choose it because of their frequent flyer program, schedules, or other services. As
a legacy airline, it would not be productive for United to try and gain business from those that are
more concerned with lower ticket fares. Instead, the airline chose to focus on the frequent business
travelers as their core market. By segmenting the customers, United chose to focus on the global
executives as their target market. "These folks made up only 9 percent of United's travelers, but they
represented 46 percent of United's revenue" (Di Frisco, 2011, para. 2). By using psychographic
segmentation,

in a company. It can also be used and developed special reports for daily operations. Another
purpose of MIS is to give feedback to the managers about their performance; and give the top
manger oversight to monitor the whole company. Information shown by MIS shows the actual data

Other airlines followed suit, creating their own systems. For example, Delta Air Lines launched the
Delta Automated Travel Account System (DATAS) in 1968. United Airlines and Trans World
Airlines followed them after in 1971, with the Apollo Reservation System and Programmed Airline
Reservation System (PARS).
The problem following these systems being developed is that travel agents begun to push for a
system that would automate their side of the process. Fearing this would place too much power in
the agent's hand. American Airlines executive Robert Crandall proposed creating and industry–wide
computer reservation system to be a central clearing house for U.S Travel. In 1976, United began to
offer their system APOLLO to travel agents so it wouldn't let them book tickets to United's
competitors. After this, other companies started following suit and release their systems to travel
agents. If we fast–forward to today, the systems that were developed by the airline companies have
been crashing. One story recently showed in November of 2016, "Airlines report problems as
booking system goes down", the computer booking system used by major American Airlines had a
malfunctioned back in November. The system, known as Sabre said the outage happened in the
middle of the day. It wasn't immediately clear how widespread the outage was. It seemed that only

Comarison Between Delta and Southwest Airlines
INTRODUCTION In this assignment I was assigned the task of comparing 2 different airlines, one
being a full service carrier and the other being a lost cost carrier, from United States of America,
namely the Delta Airlines and South West Airlines. The points of comparison were market
strategies, financial benefits, load factors, contrasting yield, revenues and passenger/cargo loads.
The analysis was done on the business model and a long term strategy. Through this it would be
known that which airline is performing better than the other. The disruption of air travel through
various incidents like the terrorist attacks and global downturn, which can be considered as
economic, political and social conditions, effect airlines adversely. ... Show more content on

By the use of different larger aircrafts for the same routes could provide for a greater profit margin.
If there is a critical flaw in any of the aircrafts, this could be devastating as the whole fleet would be
grounded. Southwest serves only to roughly 60% of the states and therefore cannot compete with
bigger airlines that operate in every state and even internationally. Also, as it does not utilize a hub
system, it cannot service those markets targeted by its competitors. The open seat policy provides
for confusion and dissatisfaction during boarding process. It does not offer in–flight meals, first–
class nor roomy seats. The policy of forcing passengers over a certain weight to purchase two seats,
which is degrading and insulting to most customers. OPPORTUNITIES Southwest Airlines
possesses a very flexible and dynamic organizational structure that allows it to react rapidly, adapt
swiftly and view environmental changes as opportunities rather than threats. After September 11,
many companies went bankrupt due to this there was an unmet demand of flights. Southwest has
taken the need of people to fly faster from one place to another and used it to their advantage by
offering safest, fastest and cheapest way. The improved website can help attract more customers. As,
it uses only one kind of aircraft its engineers can model an alternative fuel to lower fuel cost and

Diagnosing The Change : Managing Organizational Change Essay
Part 3: Diagnosing the Change
Managing Organizational Change
The Burke–Litwin Model highlights the main elements or source of major transformational change
and also the changes that are incremental in nature. The four transformational factors are external
environment, mission and strategy, leadership, and organizational culture. The main cause that
makes a company to make changes is the external environment. It can force any organization to
make changes to its mission, culture, leadership, and operating strategies. Changes in the 12 drivers
in The Burke–Litwin Model bring a series of change to the overall structure. Various internal and
external organizational factors that influence the changes in the organization are:

The fundamental premise of the model is that planned change should flow from environment to the
organizational performance. For my research project, both airlines "Delta" and "United Airlines"

The History of Southwest Airlines
Southwest Airlines (SWA) begins in June 18, 1971, when SWA first operated a first airline consul
between Houston, Dallas and San Antonio. Rollin King and Herb Kelleher are the founders of the
company. The end of 1971 SWA immediately began to expand.
In 1972 all Houston service is transferred to Houston's Hobby Airport form Houston

the customers were the Southwest's first priority. Five years after the first operated a twin–engine the

This is somewhat slower than the projected 3.5% gain for real gross domestic product (GDP) in
1998. In 1999, RPMs would advance 2.5% to 605 billion, while real GDP is seen growing 1.7%.
The recently sluggish pace for air travel represents a break from the normal pattern: since 1987, air
travel has grown 1.8 times faster than real GDP.
Two elements are working against air travel at present. First, the industry is experiencing a cyclical
slowdown that has its origins in the Asian financial crisis. Second, with the days of deeply
discounted fares over, fewer first–time travelers are entering the market.
The big swing factor for air travel in 1998 and 1999 will be the international market. International
travel accounts for some 27% of total Revenues per mile (RPM) and 22% of revenues for the largest
U.S. carriers. For the first eight months of 1998, international RPMs climbed 3.7% over the year–
earlier period. However, as capacity grew 5.8%, the load factor deteriorated to 73.7% from 75.2%.
Most of the international weakness is confined to Asia, where traffic is off about 8%.
While the economic slowdown that's underway may not deteriorate into a recession, it is expected to
take its toll on corporate profits. Historically, business travel reflects changes in corporate profits,
though sometimes with a lag. In 1997, the Travel Industry Association of America reported that

HOW WOULD YOU CHARACTERIZE THE U.S. AIRLINE INDUSTRY IN THE EARLY
1990'S? I would characterize the U.S. airline industry in the early 1990's as a steak being trimmed of
all its fat, the economic climate created a financial calamity of bankruptcies and collapse by major
airlines, which in turn created opportunity for smaller more efficient carriers with cost advantages to
enter a near oligopoly industry. The economic distress the airlines industry encountered was
spawned from recession and a doubling of fuel prices during the Gulf War in 1991. Fuel, the second

Aviation Industry Essay
Introduction As an industry, aviation is not immune to changing economics, low demands, and
threats. Throughout the history, there have been hundreds of airlines formed, but some have already
disappeared and some are still going strong. Aviation industry is constantly being challenged by
economic status, organizations, and individuals which affect the revenue, growth and profitability of
each airline. Tragic events that took place on September 11, 2001 put a huge dent in the industry but
currently in the process of recovering slowly and steadily. Demands for air transportation is
constantly on the rise even with occasional sets backs encountered by the industry such as;
terrorism, changing economics, skyrocketing fuel prices, demand changes, and increasing
competition.
Current Status of the Company In the early days, the airline was struggling to perform financially. It
took about five years to post its first profits. Today, the airline operates 10 hubs and 9 maintenance
bases which are located mostly on the west coast. Current hubs are also served by the partner
airlines.

Internal Analysis And Internal Analysis Of Southwest Airlines
By utilizing their strategic capabilities obtained through the competences and resources, Southwest
Airlines increases the competitive advantage over other airlines. To gain competitive advantage
companies use competences and the tangible and intangible assets of the entity are considered
resources (Thompson and Gamble, 2012). A company can react to the external environment and be
successful through their capabilities and resources. This internal analysis will look at Southwest
Airlines competencies and resources over the last three years through their financials. When looking
a company's financial statements and ratios, the numbers explain different financial standpoints
within the company. Some companies would like to see certain areas in their finances increase and
decrease. Looking at Southwest Airlines' ratio we will consider the current ratio, debt to equity ratio,
fixed assets turnover and gross profit margin. In looking at these ratios one can view areas the
company is doing well in as well as areas of improvement.
Southwest Airlines current year, 2016, ratio compared to 2015 and 2014 was up and down. In the
current ratio one wants to see an upward trend (Luv Income Statement, 2017). In Appendix A from
2014 to 2015 downward trend is observed, then in 2016 the trend is upward but not higher than
2014. Also in debt to equity a company wants to see a downward trend. In 2015 the trend went
down from 2014, but from 2015 to 2016 the trend went up. Southwest Airlines did meet the trend
and can be viewed as doing well in the gross profit margin. The gross profit margin indicates the
total margin available to cover operating expenses and yield profit (Rothaermel, 2012). However, in
fixed assets turnover an upward trend is what is generally wanted and Southwest Airlines has a
downward trend.
In looking at the financial statements for Delta Air Lines ( DAL) and American Air Lines ( AAL) in
comparison to Southwest the trends in current ratio is an upward trend. Current ratios often show
whether a company is meeting short–term obligations. Based on the financial statements mentioned
above it shows that Delta Airlines had a upward trend ( DAL Income Statement, 2017); whereas
American Airlines trend was up

operated. During this time, travel agent fees were going through the roof and reserving an airline
ticket was a complicated, drawn–out process. To counter this, Southwest implemented its own
reservation system tailored to their own needs, which also included the industry's first paperless
ticketing system; but this wasn't the end of IT innovation from Southwest Airlines. In 1995,
Southwest.com was launched, and the online ticketing and reservation system was launched in 1996.
Soon thereafter, Southwest Airlines ticket sales were primarily coming from their online reservation
system (70%). By the late 90's, Southwest.com was the most visited airline website [4]. By the start
of the millennium, Southwest airlines had already mastered another IT milestone which is still in use
to this very day: allowing the passenger to print their own boarding vouchers and allowing
passengers to self–check in on their own computer even before arriving at the airport [4]! By
implementing these two features on the Southwest website, the airline was able to reduce the
number of customer service agents at check in counters and allowed customers to spend minimal
time waiting at an airport [2]. This increases both passenger and staff efficiency, making the
mundane task of waiting around at an airport virtually a thing of the past.
Industry Analysis: Applying the Porter model to Southwest Airlines, we can see airline that is

Oligopoly : Concept Of Oligopoly
4
Running head: OLIGOPOLY
Concept of Oligopoly Domestic aviation market in the United States is the best example of
demonstrating oligopoly. From a recent incident the United Airlines dragged one of its passengers
out of the plane due to overbooking. The incident rightly represented the treatment being given to
the economy class passengers. The main reason for such incident is the market power. According to
the statistics in the year 2016, it was noted that combined shares of the 4 leading airlines in the US
were 68% however the current market shows that the shares rose to 80%. (Prijs, 2017)
Oligopoly could be defined as a type of market structure that involves few producers. In this market
structure all these small firms compete ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For instance the US airlines have hundreds of sub–airlines that flies between a common
destinations. So, when we see these airlines there is no competition seen however there are only 2–3
main airlines like American and United that are competing with each other. So, to understand
oligopoly it is necessary to look ahead with its understanding rather than just jumping on the
conclusion when a subsidiary of the firm is seen. The simplest case of understanding oligopoly is
duopoly where an industry has only two small firms and they get higher profit if they limit their
production and increases their prices. The increased return is the main reason for the prevalence of
oligopoly among the big firms. (Prijs, 2017)
It is quite challenging to know about oligopoly by looking at the market structure of an industry.
Sometimes the industry may have some of its subtypes but it may not use it for the profit. For
instance, US may have hundreds of airlines but its not necessary that the entire airline in US for the
same destination are competing with each other. There could only be one or two major airlines that
may compete with each other like American and United.
Herfindahl–Hirschman Index It is one of the criteria used by economists to have a better idea about
the market structure of a company. It is usually defined as the sum of the squares of market shares of
the sub–industries of a firm. Like if a company has 3 sub industries with

Case Study : Alaska Air Company
SUBJECT: Deal Review
Introduction
On April 4th, 2016, Alaska Air Group, Inc. announced that it had agreed to a merger agreement with
Virgin America Inc. Alaska Air agreed to pay $57 per share in cash, for a total of around $2.6
billion. After taking into account Virgin's operating leases, Alaska Air will pay $4 billion dollars to
acquire Virgin. Upon completion of the acquisition, Alaska Air became the 5th largest U.S. airline,
surpassing JetBlue in terms of ASM (available seat miles). Given that both airlines focus on the
West Coast, this deal strengthens Alaska Air's West Coast presence, positioning the company well to
dominate this geography. However, while there are certainly strategic benefits of the transaction, an
analysis from both buyer and seller perspectives reveals significant downsides as well.
Virgin America
From the perspective of Virgin America, the deal offers many benefits. Having gone public less than
two years prior to the deal, Virgin America's stock has only been traded for a short time. During this
period, the price peaked at $43 in January 2015, fluctuating around the IPO price of $30 until
acquisition talks began. In the end, Virgin was acquired for nearly twice the price it has been trading
at prior to the deal. For Virgin, the benefits are obvious. First, it was acquired at a healthy premium
to its market value, earning significant returns for its shareholders. Much of this can be attributed to
the bidding war that occurred between Alaska Air

Southwest Airlines Competitive Position : The Domestic...
Southwest Airlines Competitive Position
The domestic airline industry transports 711 million souls a year. That translates into a staggering
$709 billion a year revenue flow (statista.com). One firm, named Southwest Airlines, accounts for
18.3 percent of that market. That 18.3 percent market share places Southwest at the number two
spot, behind American Airlines. How does Southwest Airlines successfully compete and thrive in
this environment? How do they differentiate themselves from the hoards of legacy carriers?
Southwest Airlines encapsulates its strategy in a simple statement: "Meet customers' short–haul
travel needs at fares competitive with the cost of automobile travel (Grant, p.23). As a pioneer in
low cost air travel, Southwest has successfully brought down airfares through its short route point–
to–point business model, "no–frills" service, single flight strategy, and highly productive employees
(Cederholm, 2014). In the following analysis we will investigate Southwest Airlines standing within
the industry as a whole and their differentiation models driving success. We will also identify the
firm's competitive advantages as they relate to similar firms in the industry.
Current Condition and Future Outlook Southwest Airlines has humble roots, which began in 1971
when the entire operation consisted of three Boeing 737 aircraft that traveled between three Texas
cities. Today, the firm serves 96 destinations in 21 states and boasts a fleet of 550 aircraft

Memphis International Airport ( Mem )
The following paper explores how Memphis International Airport (MEM), the world's second
busiest
cargo shipping airport, handles its day to day operations involving passenger airlines in conjunction
with
FedEx commercial shipping. By comparing DOT and FAA reports, along with the airlines and
FedEx's
shipping statistics, an airport capacity and congestion problem is disproved. Since Delta closed
down
their MEM hub, passenger air travel has dramatically decreased while cargo shipping has continued
to
steadily climb. Other airlines have started offering services in and out of MEM but were only able to
increase passenger travel by 1%, in 2014. The different operating schedules of passenger and cargo
shipping, allow for each of them to conduct their flights without hindering the operations of the
other.

Strategic Alliances
"Strategic alliances thus combine the advantages of flexible, long–term collaboration at a reasonable

strategic alliances, agreements, airport collaboration contracts. Airports and airlines in other
countries outside the United States have different agreements on financial responsibilities for the
airport terminals. In the United States, airports are considered landlords and help with the

Delta Airlines could have moved to help meet customer needs and requests. Referencing Table 3, the
second reason customers choose a specific airline is "punctuality of flights" (Albers, Koch, & Ruff,

National Airspace and Airport Congestion Case Study
The future of the airline industry has been calculated to increase in the next 12 years at a growth rate
of 2.2 percent per year of enplaned travelers to destinations within the United States. The passenger
projections has been estimated to reach 800 billion by 2016 and to continue growth to one billion by
2027, and reaching 1.2 billion by 2033. This will certainly give Facebook a run for it's money with
the social interaction of the travelers. Albeit, the FAA , several other government agencies,
communities responsible for large hub airports and the airline industry are planning ahead to
transform the infrastructure of our domestic airports. This joint effort will push to reach solutions of
the basic core of our air transportation issues that will limit our capacity to physically maintain the
ability to support these increases. Any loss, delays, or inability to transport passengers will mean a
loss of revenue, not only for the airlines, but the communities and industries this mode of

The Importance Of Mass Media
Mass media has an influential role in broadcasting vital information to it audience. The media has
some control in the development of the general public opinion, their convictions and attitudes in
addition to the relationship for social change. Crimes receive a large of scope in mass media, no
matter the difference what outlet is detailing it. Broad communications choose the occasions in
which they report, there are a few reports that impact the groups of onlookers' considerations in the
wrong way.
Recently, local police departments in the U.S have been under scrutiny. Media reports increase
identifying with police brutality, discrimination, and self–protection. There has been systematic
coverage of attacks and other violations. In these reports about the police and wrongdoings in the
media, it is not hard to conclude that crime is on the rise all around. The United States feels like it is
no longer a protected place where youngsters can play in the front yard without hazards. The media
provides an awesome source of information. In any case, it is basic to perceive that it has some level
of control over our recognitions and we should search for actualities before making a speedy

BACKGROUND
No tC op
On June 18, 1971, Southwest Airlines, headquartered at Love Field in Dallas, began flying with
three Boeing 737 aircraft serving the Texas cities of Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio.
Southwest's competition was Texas International and Braniff, and, to a lesser extent,
Continental. Continental used every political and regulatory means to ensure that Southwest would

Abstract
There are conflicting expectations of the nature of a company's responsibilities to society. However,
those companies that undertake what may be termed 'Corporate Social Responsibility' must decide;
what are the actual social responsibilities of these companies? I will present a possible paradigm.
Also, I will look at the benefit to the business that employs proper management as compared the
business with poor management. This research paper describes my view of corporate social

Delta Airlines And Los Angeles International Airport
Delta information for moving day, May 2017. The weekend over Mother's Day of 2017 is going to a
big mess for passengers and crew members unaware of the big move (Delta Airlines, 2017). The
large–scale switch is going to create delays and possibly make passengers miss flights. Delta
Airlines has instructed flights crews to make a specific announcement after each landing in LAX to
help passengers and provide a little public relations customer service (Delta Airlines, 2017). We
apologize for today's delay and are working diligently to correct these operational issues. Starting
Mother's Day weekend, Delta begins a transition to Terminals 2 and 3 on the north side of the

Southwest Airlines tries to produce the most amount of revenue while reducing downtime and
reducing extravagant items. Extravagant items extend to the terminal public waiting area. These
public areas around the Southwest Airlines gates are not always appealing or up–to–date.
Southwest Airlines has a majority traffic share in and out of San Diego International Airport. In
terminal one, Southwest Airlines has over half of the facility for their gates and spaces. Terminal one
is an older design and will need to be updated within the next decade. Terminal two at San Diego
International Airport was recently updated and houses international airlines, American Airlines,
Delta Airlines, United Airlines, and a few other miscellaneous airlines (San Diego County Regional
Airport Authority, 2017). This terminal has recently completed a major renovation, and has
expanded the capabilities and accommodations for airlines, retailers, and food concessionaires. This
new facility houses the upgraded customs facility, which is getting another advanced improvement
to be the most state of the art customs facilities in the country (San Diego County Regional Airport

Swot Analysis Of Delta Air Lines
In 2012, Delta Air Lines had emerged like the phoenix, from the ashes of a 2008, Chapter 11
bankruptcy to become the second largest airline worldwide. Through its network of operations,
Delta provides air transport both domestically and internationally for cargo, mail, and passengers. In
the past, Delta successfully utilized mergers and acquisitions to increase its market share and grow
its existing service base. Since 2012, Delta has been aggressively seeking out new opportunities for
further growth in a volatile market with high price elasticity and low brand loyalty. The 2008 merger
with Northwest Airlines left Delta with higher long–term debt, making Delta vulnerable limited debt
assumption required for future growth.
Two rather simple ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Delta can utilize these current benefits to emerge as a lower–cost option through its increased
buying power and lower overhead costs, allowing Delta to gain higher margins while maintaining
competitive pricing with its main two competitors, American Airlines and United Airlines.
Additionally, the efficiency of the reduced fuel and operations cost structure enables Delta to set its
pricing lower than that of its competitors, which, in the end, will capture much of its competitor's
market share including that of its mid–line competitor US Airways. The increased buying power for
fuel contracts will give Delta a competitive advantage should we see another spike in crude oil due
to conflicts in the Middle East. Delta must also compete with the value pricing of its lower–end,
economy competitors Southwest and Jet Blue. Southwest Airlines stands out in the pack and boasts,
according to a customer satisfaction index, the highest customer satisfaction rating in the industry at
81% in 2011.
Finding of Fact 2
Delta is forced to compete with low–cost carriers.
As the old adage goes, "if you can't beat them, join them". Delta's current business model makes it
incredibly difficult to compete with low–cost airline carriers. The acquisition of Southwest would
not center on product differentiation but rather as "the product" or commodity when compared to
Delta's competitors. Delta has long proved that it is incapable of merging with or sustaining a low–
cost airline. The

Delta Airlines Essay
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
This report provides an examinaion of the current structure, performance, stragergy and
management of Delta Airlines, along with an industry analysis of the airline industry. The report
uses current and past financial and statistical data for the company along with other up to date
material to determine Delta's current market position and future potential.
The report finds that Delta Airlines has successfully emerged from its bankruptcy in 2005 to report
successful returns in both 2007 and 2008. With its 2008 acquisition of Northwest Airlines Delta
became the world's largest airline, further improving its position in the airline industry. Despite this
current positive position report also finds potential adversities ... Show more content on

The Northwest brand is gradually being phased out and being replaced by Delta's name and brand.
During the integration period, Delta and Northwest will continue to operate their own branded
aircraft until the integration process is complete. This has given delta a combined market share of
approximately 18% (Gayle, 2008)
Effects of Market Structure
In the United States there are generally two types of airlines: "legacy carriers," which are defined as
airlines that specifically operated interstate routes prior to the Airline Deregulation Act of 1978, and
"low cost" airlines that compete solely on the basis of offering the lowest price per ticket within the
market in which they are operating
Market conduct
Market structure can be defined as patterns of behaviour by enterprises in an effort to adjust to the
markets in which they operate (buy or sell). Pricing strategies and collusive behaviour mergers are a
few dimensions of market conduct. It is the industry norm for a legacy carrier to offer service to
most popular destinations; Delta reducing routes to a similar schedule as the low–cost airlines is not
an option in the multi–billion dollar industry. In order to gain market share from low–cost airlines,
Delta must create a value proposition that differentiates itself from its competitors. Many customers
will pay a premium if the level of service provided is higher than the low–cost, no–frills

Where Worlds Collide By Pico Iyer
"Where Worlds Collide" is an essay by Pico Iyer who talks about the expectations and reality of Los
Angeles through the perspectives of travelers from different backgrounds. In "Where Worlds
Collide," Pico Iyer argues that even though Los Angeles is depicted as a vicinity to receive wealth,
happiness, and many opportunities– it is actually the antithesis, and instead, many harsh prejudice
and unending craziness will occur instead; Iyer argues this by using allusions, anaphoras, and
juxtapositions to help convey what he is saying.
In the beginning of this passage, Iyer starts off with a lively and narrative tone to introduce a biblical
allusion in the first paragraph; Iyer explains how many travelers come out from the airplane to reach
their final destination, the "Promised Land." This allusion sparks an interest to the readers because
Iyer is referring to the Los Angeles International Airport as the "Promised Land." Throughout the
essay, Iyer refers to the LAX as the "Land of Opportunity" Iyer is using these two allusions to help
paint a picture of what the LAX means to these naive travelers, a place filled with hopes and
dreams. These allusions help correspond to the jubilance of the author's tone and helps keep the
writing capture the author's passion about his story.
Later in Iyer's passage, he uses anaphoras to help solidify the hectic attributes of the LAX, which
contradicts the supposed "Promised Land." Iyer describes how the second thing that the travelers see
is that "[i]n front of them is a Van Stop, a Bus Stop, a Courtesy Tram Stop, and a Shuttle Bus
Stop..." (101). The repetition of "stop" is utilized to show that all of these "stops" are bombarding
their way through towards the travelers– just as if everything is going out of control. The scenery
that Iyer is depicting is about a hectic airport, not about a "Promised Land." Iyer includes more
anaphoras as he talks about how "[t]hey have already braved the ranks of Asian officials, the
criminal–looking security men in jackets... They already, perhaps, visited the restroom where
someone has written, 'Yes on Proposition 187. Mexicans go home...'" (101). The anaphoras being
used in this example shows the repetition of "they have" and the emphasis of this

Southwest Airlines Case Study
Southwest Airlines have become an international carrier with gradual development coupled with
strong leadership. The company has faced difficulties through stiff competition from the other
leading carriers, which struggle to gain a larger market share for the travel product. The company
desire to expand is what makes it more successful in the market. The expansionary measures also
require significant management practices, which become harder. Southwest Airline faces
competition from Delta Airlines, which is a major carrier on the international travel. The companies
go neck to neck on revenues and number of passengers in the recent financial years. For Southwest

According to Dresner et al (2016), the financial strength of Southwest Airlines has continued to
improve over the years despite the stiff competition in the industry. The company enjoyed an after–
tax profit of 2.2 billion dollars in 2015 from a total revenue of 19.8 billion dollars, which was an
increased value from the previous financial year of 2014, which had 18.6–billion–dollar revenue
with an after–tax profit of 1.2 billion dollars. The commercial might of the company is also
indicated by the repurchase program of 2 billion dollars introduced by the board of directors to the
public with an increased quarterly dividend earning from 0.075 dollars per share in 2015, to 0.10
dollars per share in 2016. Weathering the industry downturns, increased jet fuel prices, airline traffic
falloffs, fare wars, recessions and unhealthy competition by the rival airlines, the company has stood
firm in the market but more remains to be done in a gaining a wide and greater competitive edge. In
2015, Southwest Airlines had 704 Boeing 737 carriers, which were serving 40 states in America
with 97 destinations. With the adoption of international flights recently, Southwest looks at
expanding measures, which bring competition to another level rather than the local competition. The
board of management will have to come up with ways of weathering down the stiff competition that

An Approach Into Los Angeles International Airport
On February 1st, 1991 USAir Flight 1493 (USA 1493), a Boeing 737–300 (B–737), was on an
approach into Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), as part of a scheduled stop prior to
completing its journey to San Francisco. USA 1493 was piloted by Captain Colin Shaw who had
over 16,000 flight hours and First Officer David Kelly with over 4,000 total flight hours. Meanwhile
on the ground at LAX, SkyWest Airlines Flight 5569 (Skywest 5569), a Fairchild Metroliner, had
just executed its clearance to taxi to Runway 24L from Gate 32 given by the local controller (LC2)
in the LAX tower, and was holding short (NTSB, 1991, p. 5). It was now 6:03PM, about 40 minutes
after Sunset, with a cloud deck at 30,000 feet and 15 miles of visibility (NTSB, ... Show more

Once the nose began to lower the two pilots of USA 1493 immediately saw Skywest 5569 sitting on
the runway and applied the brakes, but there was no time. At 6:07PM USA 1493 slammed into
Skywest 5569, crippling the nose gear of the B–737 and igniting an explosion that resulted in the
two aircraft skidding off the left side of the runway and slamming into an unoccupied fire station. 64
passengers, 3 cabin crewmembers, and the First Officer successfully evacuated the burning B–737
(NTSB, 1991, p. 8).
Investigation
During the investigation, NTSB investigators processed and analyzed voice recordings, toxicology
results, conducted meteorological, site surveys and reviewed shift logs as well as airline and airport
operating procedures. The voice recordings and operating procedures were the most vital in
understanding the diminished situational awareness that took place that day. USA 1493's FDR and
the ATC radio recordings were successfully recovered and would help investigators determine
exactly what went wrong on February 1st, 1991 as well as the workload experienced by both pilots
and controllers. The captain and crew of USA 1493 were fully qualified and fully staffed for the
flight. Witnesses who saw the crew beforehand stated that they appeared to be well rested. The exact
same was true for Skywest 5569. The controller for 1493 and 5569 had a total

Diversity, Gender Diversity And Human Rights
Delta has shown great support for human rights and has supported the rights of their employees;
their vision and decisions have had positive implications for their business and managerial practices.
The founder of Delta, C.E. Woolman states, "Happy Employees Make Happy Customers Make
Happy Shareholders" (Kaufman, 2013, p.28). It is implicit that Delta cares about their employees
and understands the importance of carrying out and using diversity practices within their business.
Cultural diversity, gender diversity, and human rights have been at the forefront of this company
since the beginning; this company has succeeded and overcome many challenges mainly because of
their strong commitment to not only their employees but to the rights of the human condition.
Delta Air lines, the Non–Unionized
Delta Airlines is the only airline outside of the Middle East that is mostly non–unionized. The only
union the airline has ever been a part of is the Pilot's Association, which is the largest pilot union in
the world representing over 50,000 pilots in 31 American and Canadian airlines (Yamanouchi,
2015). Unions are usually seen as being very beneficial to an employee. There are many
repercussions that come along with unionizing for both an employee and an employer. Unions are
losing their longstanding appeal for basic security needs to companies like Delta who show more
desirable leadership to their employees Companies are also are offering more competitive benefits

Immigration At Los Angeles International Airport
I came to America in October of 1993 with a tourist visa. I was twenty years old. When I entered
through the Customs and Immigration at Los Angeles International Airport, the officer gave me a
permit to stay in the U.S. That permit was called I–94 "Proof of Legal Entry into the U.S." Said
permit was for six months only. My father asked me to stay in the United States forever. I was not
sure if I wanted to do that. His request for me meant not seeing my mother, sisters, and brothers any
time soon. Besides, if I stay longer than the period marked in my permit, I would become what is
called "Out of Status". In other words "an illegal alien." I did not want to become an illegal alien. I
was new to this country, however, I knew that it was not a good idea to stay longer than allowed. I
had heard so many stories about "illegal aliens." I did not want to be one of them. I conveyed my
plans to my father. I told him I would go back to Nicaragua with my family, and maybe we could
start a business. My idea was to purchase goods in America and sell them in Nicaragua. My father
rejected my idea and clearly stated that I was staying regardless. My heart sunk when he said it did
not matter if I wanted to stay or not because he had hidden my passport and my flight tickets. I
started crying, and felt deceived. Out of respect to my very strict father, I did not question or fight
him. Originally, he had asked me to come visit him in America. He said he would give me a tour of

With all the technology today, it is important for airports to adapt and stay on top of improvements
that make things go by faster and easier for the flyers. People are able to type in their conformation

for their flight. Everything is well organized, and set up in a way that is easy to navigate to the right

creates more business so the airlines can make more of a profit. The airline counters are set up in a
specific order that separates them from other popular airlines to make a place less crowded. The
order from right to left goes: United Airlines, Alaska Airlines, Allegiant Air, American Airlines,
Southwest Airlines, and Delta Airlines. The purpose of this space is to make traveling a fast
experience with shorter lines. Many people often miss their flights because of crowds of people
waiting in long lines. The bigger airlines like United, Southwest, American Airlines, and Delta are

He proposed this idea to Kelleher. King convinced that local air travel needs in Texas were not too
complicated and the time required to drive to airports, parks, and take off was too lengthy.
Business concept
Rollin's BUSINESS CONCEPT for the airline was:
ATTRACT passengers by flying convenient schedules, getting passengers to their destination on
time at the lowest possible fares, making sure they had a good experience.
Strategic intent
King's intent was: * Meet the needs of travelers going between Dallas, San Antonio and Houston *
Make fares competitive with travel by automobile
He further concluded that a new airline was feasible. As a result, Kelleher agreed to handle the
necessary legal work and also to invest $10,000 of his own funds.

The mission of Southwest Airlines is:

SWOT analysis of Turitea Aviation
Strengths
Johnny Johnson
– From the beginning, the company has had a strong reputation for being an excellent Maintenance,
Repair and Overhaul organisation. Johnny Johnson who is credited to being an extremely efficient
worker, and has the ability to thoroughly plan his next move is still an employee at Turitea Aviation.
He has twice served on the board and is a valuable employee to the company. Johnson can be
considered a strength to the company for the following reasons;
– He can be directly linked to the early success of the company. This indicates that he is a competent
employee who may have the ability in aiding the new CEO to bringing Turitea Aviation back to its
former glory.
– He has been noted to have a 'consultative management style'. In a company that has just been
through the stress associated with a resignation of an undesirable leader, Johnsons' management will
be extremely beneficial for repairing and adopting a new company culture. Employees will be
looking for someone to lead/someone to follow. Johnson, a senior employee, encourages staff to
approach him for information and advice. This will make staff fell as though he is one of the team
not an individual that is above everyone else as Edgar may have been perceived.
Multiple maintenance bases
– Under the control of Edgar Kain, many maintenance bases where created in both New Zealand
and Australian cities. Aircraft are always going to need servicing and with bases

Southwest Airlines And United Airlines

  • 1. Southwest Airlines And United Airlines Mission Statement Analysis Southwest Airlines and United Airlines have been direct competitors in the airline business for a number of years. As time has passed, we have seen Southwest take a more Servant Leadership minded approach, while United decided upon a more traditional style of Leadership. From their mission statements, along with reviews from flyers and profitability, to the overall culture of the companies, we look to see how these two airlines compete, and which one comes out on top. Mission Statements The mission statement is often publically stated and used by almost every organization today. It helps provide basic guidelines, essentially the core values of a company, and what they aim for. A mission statement gives customers ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Not only was the mission statement or core values difficult to find, but the page had a vague title called "It's how we fly". The page seemed to assume that the reader should just know what United was about and what they believed. The core values seem placed there simply because it is required, not because they are values followed by the actual organization. Both Airlines include words about customer service and treating them well, but Southwest put it simply and concisely. United seemed more focused on impressing readers with their core values. I believe that the Southwest mission statement impacts the culture of the organization by being a definition of what it should look like. Comparatively, I believe that United's core values impact the culture very little if not at all. Principles Southwest Airlines is dedicated to incorporating all servant leadership principles throughout their organization. Accordingly, their mission statement is clear and concise it evidently exemplifies all principles and acknowledges a servant–led organization. Their mission statement embraces their commitment to serve the highest quality of customer service through a sense of warmth, friendliness, individual pride, and company spirit (Southwest, 2014). Therefore, through Southwest's' mission statement it makes it explicitly apparent that they seek to listen and commit to the growth of their people. Southwest empathizes with their employees because they are dedicated to providing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Essay on Marketing Plan for United Airlines Marketing Plan for United Airlines Jayne Diaz BUS 620: Managerial Marketing Professor David Kalicharan February 20, 2012 Marketing Plan for United Airlines Airline companies are becoming more and more competitive as the low budget discount airlines are becoming popular. It is key for airlines to differentiate themselves among the various airlines to choose from, and United Airlines wanted to ensure that it offered products and services for all marketing segments. "United realized that it needed to develop a customer–centric future strategy and galvanize its organization to improve the customer experience for its most valued customers" (Prophet, 2012, para. 1). This paper discusses the marketing plan for the newly merged ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Like many organizations, United Airlines uses market segmentation to help define the target market and become a leading choice for airline travelers. United Airline's marketing firm uses psychographic segmentation, which divides customers according to their lifestyle, as a way to successfully target specific customers. United Airlines used questionnaires to classify their potential customers by their motivations and identified nine motivational segment profiles which are: global executives, schedule optimizers, corporate troopers, mile accumulators, reluctant travelers, tour takers, quality vacationers, travel seekers, and frugal flyers (The Times 100, 2003, p. 2). The reasons why travelers choose to fly United varies. For example, some may choose this airline because of price, while others choose it because of their frequent flyer program, schedules, or other services. As a legacy airline, it would not be productive for United to try and gain business from those that are more concerned with lower ticket fares. Instead, the airline chose to focus on the frequent business travelers as their core market. By segmenting the customers, United chose to focus on the global executives as their target market. "These folks made up only 9 percent of United's travelers, but they represented 46 percent of United's revenue" (Di Frisco, 2011, para. 2). By using psychographic segmentation, ... Another purpose of MIS is to give feedback to the managers about their performance; and give the top manger oversight to monitor the whole company. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Other airlines followed suit, creating their own systems. For example, Delta Air Lines launched the Delta Automated Travel Account System (DATAS) in 1968. United Airlines and Trans World Airlines followed them after in 1971, with the Apollo Reservation System and Programmed Airline Reservation System (PARS). The problem following these systems being developed is that travel agents begun to push for a system that would automate their side of the process. Fearing this would place too much power in the agent's hand. American Airlines executive Robert Crandall proposed creating and industry–wide computer reservation system to be a central clearing house for U.S Travel. In 1976, United began to offer their system APOLLO to travel agents so it wouldn't let them book tickets to United's competitors. After this, other companies started following suit and release their systems to travel agents. If we fast–forward to today, the systems that were developed by the airline companies have been crashing. One story recently showed in November of 2016, "Airlines report problems as booking system goes down", the computer booking system used by major American Airlines had a malfunctioned back in November. Comarison Between Delta and Southwest Airlines INTRODUCTION In this assignment I was assigned the task of comparing 2 different airlines, one being a full service carrier and the other being a lost cost carrier, from United States of America, namely the Delta Airlines and South West Airlines. The points of comparison were market strategies, financial benefits, load factors, contrasting yield, revenues and passenger/cargo loads. The analysis was done on the business model and a long term strategy. Through this it would be known that which airline is performing better than the other. The disruption of air travel through various incidents like the terrorist attacks and global downturn, which can be considered as economic, political and social conditions, effect airlines adversely. ... If there is a critical flaw in any of the aircrafts, this could be devastating as the whole fleet would be grounded. Southwest serves only to roughly 60% of the states and therefore cannot compete with bigger airlines that operate in every state and even internationally. Also, as it does not utilize a hub system, it cannot service those markets targeted by its competitors. The open seat policy provides for confusion and dissatisfaction during boarding process. It does not offer in–flight meals, first– class nor roomy seats. The policy of forcing passengers over a certain weight to purchase two seats, which is degrading and insulting to most customers. OPPORTUNITIES Southwest Airlines possesses a very flexible and dynamic organizational structure that allows it to react rapidly, adapt swiftly and view environmental changes as opportunities rather than threats. After September 11, many companies went bankrupt due to this there was an unmet demand of flights. Southwest has taken the need of people to fly faster from one place to another and used it to their advantage by offering safest, fastest and cheapest way. The improved website can help attract more customers. As, it uses only one kind of aircraft its engineers can model an alternative fuel to lower fuel cost and conserve the environment. As proven ... • 9. Diagnosing The Change : Managing Organizational Change Essay Part 3: Diagnosing the Change Managing Organizational Change The Burke–Litwin Model highlights the main elements or source of major transformational change and also the changes that are incremental in nature. The four transformational factors are external environment, mission and strategy, leadership, and organizational culture. The main cause that makes a company to make changes is the external environment. It can force any organization to make changes to its mission, culture, leadership, and operating strategies. Changes in the 12 drivers in The Burke–Litwin Model bring a series of change to the overall structure. Various internal and external organizational factors that influence the changes in the organization are: Four transformational factors  External environment  Mission and Strategy  Leadership  Organizational Culture Internal organizational factors  Structure  Systems (Policies and Procedures)  Management Practices  Work Unit Climate  Tasks and skills  Individual Values and Needs  Motivation Level  Individual and Overall Performance Sources: (Palmer et. al., 2009). The fundamental premise of the model is that planned change should flow from environment to the organizational performance. For my research project, both airlines "Delta" and "United Airlines" have environmental factors that have affected their performance. Jet Fuel prices have driven up the operational cost of both companies. Internal factor such as unions and employee issues ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The History of Southwest Airlines Essay The History of Southwest Airlines Southwest Airlines (SWA) begins in June 18, 1971, when SWA first operated a first airline consul between Houston, Dallas and San Antonio. Rollin King and Herb Kelleher are the founders of the company. The end of 1971 SWA immediately began to expand. In 1999, RPMs would advance 2.5% to 605 billion, while real GDP is seen growing 1.7%. The recently sluggish pace for air travel represents a break from the normal pattern: since 1987, air travel has grown 1.8 times faster than real GDP. Two elements are working against air travel at present. First, the industry is experiencing a cyclical slowdown that has its origins in the Asian financial crisis. Second, with the days of deeply discounted fares over, fewer first–time travelers are entering the market. The big swing factor for air travel in 1998 and 1999 will be the international market. International travel accounts for some 27% of total Revenues per mile (RPM) and 22% of revenues for the largest U.S. carriers. For the first eight months of 1998, international RPMs climbed 3.7% over the year– earlier period. However, as capacity grew 5.8%, the load factor deteriorated to 73.7% from 75.2%. Most of the international weakness is confined to Asia, where traffic is off about 8%. While the economic slowdown that's underway may not deteriorate into a recession, it is expected to take its toll on corporate profits. Historically, business travel reflects changes in corporate profits, though sometimes with a lag. In 1997, the Travel Industry Association of America reported that business travel ... I would characterize the U.S. airline industry in the early 1990's as a steak being trimmed of all its fat, the economic climate created a financial calamity of bankruptcies and collapse by major airlines, which in turn created opportunity for smaller more efficient carriers with cost advantages to enter a near oligopoly industry. The economic distress the airlines industry encountered was spawned from recession and a doubling of fuel prices during the Gulf War in 1991. Throughout the history, there have been hundreds of airlines formed, but some have already disappeared and some are still going strong. Aviation industry is constantly being challenged by economic status, organizations, and individuals which affect the revenue, growth and profitability of each airline. Tragic events that took place on September 11, 2001 put a huge dent in the industry but currently in the process of recovering slowly and steadily. Demands for air transportation is constantly on the rise even with occasional sets backs encountered by the industry such as; terrorism, changing economics, skyrocketing fuel prices, demand changes, and increasing competition. • 17. Internal Analysis And Internal Analysis Of Southwest Airlines By utilizing their strategic capabilities obtained through the competences and resources, Southwest Airlines increases the competitive advantage over other airlines. To gain competitive advantage companies use competences and the tangible and intangible assets of the entity are considered resources (Thompson and Gamble, 2012). A company can react to the external environment and be successful through their capabilities and resources. This internal analysis will look at Southwest Airlines competencies and resources over the last three years through their financials. When looking a company's financial statements and ratios, the numbers explain different financial standpoints within the company. Some companies would like to see certain areas in their finances increase and decrease. Looking at Southwest Airlines' ratio we will consider the current ratio, debt to equity ratio, fixed assets turnover and gross profit margin. In looking at these ratios one can view areas the company is doing well in as well as areas of improvement. Southwest Airlines current year, 2016, ratio compared to 2015 and 2014 was up and down. In the current ratio one wants to see an upward trend (Luv Income Statement, 2017). In Appendix A from 2014 to 2015 downward trend is observed, then in 2016 the trend is upward but not higher than 2014. Also in debt to equity a company wants to see a downward trend. In 2015 the trend went down from 2014, but from 2015 to 2016 the trend went up. Southwest Airlines did meet the trend and can be viewed as doing well in the gross profit margin. The gross profit margin indicates the total margin available to cover operating expenses and yield profit (Rothaermel, 2012). However, in fixed assets turnover an upward trend is what is generally wanted and Southwest Airlines has a downward trend. In looking at the financial statements for Delta Air Lines ( DAL) and American Air Lines ( AAL) in comparison to Southwest the trends in current ratio is an upward trend. Current ratios often show whether a company is meeting short–term obligations. Based on the financial statements mentioned above it shows that Delta Airlines had a upward trend ( DAL Income Statement, 2017); whereas American Airlines trend was up ... To counter this, Southwest implemented its own reservation system tailored to their own needs, which also included the industry's first paperless ticketing system; but this wasn't the end of IT innovation from Southwest Airlines. In 1995, Southwest.com was launched, and the online ticketing and reservation system was launched in 1996. Soon thereafter, Southwest Airlines ticket sales were primarily coming from their online reservation system (70%). By the late 90's, Southwest.com was the most visited airline website [4]. By the start of the millennium, Southwest airlines had already mastered another IT milestone which is still in use to this very day: allowing the passenger to print their own boarding vouchers and allowing passengers to self–check in on their own computer even before arriving at the airport [4]! By implementing these two features on the Southwest website, the airline was able to reduce the number of customer service agents at check in counters and allowed customers to spend minimal time waiting at an airport [2]. This increases both passenger and staff efficiency, making the mundane task of waiting around at an airport virtually a thing of the past. • 21. Oligopoly : Concept Of Oligopoly 4 Running head: OLIGOPOLY Concept of Oligopoly Domestic aviation market in the United States is the best example of demonstrating oligopoly. From a recent incident the United Airlines dragged one of its passengers out of the plane due to overbooking. The incident rightly represented the treatment being given to the economy class passengers. The main reason for such incident is the market power. According to the statistics in the year 2016, it was noted that combined shares of the 4 leading airlines in the US were 68% however the current market shows that the shares rose to 80%. (Prijs, 2017) Oligopoly could be defined as a type of market structure that involves few producers. In this market structure all these small firms compete ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For instance the US airlines have hundreds of sub–airlines that flies between a common destinations. So, when we see these airlines there is no competition seen however there are only 2–3 main airlines like American and United that are competing with each other. So, to understand oligopoly it is necessary to look ahead with its understanding rather than just jumping on the conclusion when a subsidiary of the firm is seen. The simplest case of understanding oligopoly is duopoly where an industry has only two small firms and they get higher profit if they limit their production and increases their prices. The increased return is the main reason for the prevalence of oligopoly among the big firms. (Prijs, 2017) It is quite challenging to know about oligopoly by looking at the market structure of an industry. Sometimes the industry may have some of its subtypes but it may not use it for the profit. For instance, US may have hundreds of airlines but its not necessary that the entire airline in US for the same destination are competing with each other. There could only be one or two major airlines that may compete with each other like American and United. Herfindahl–Hirschman Index It is one of the criteria used by economists to have a better idea about the market structure of a company. It is usually defined as the sum of the squares of market shares of the sub–industries of a firm. Like if a company has 3 sub industries with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 23. Case Study : Alaska Air Company SUBJECT: Deal Review Introduction On April 4th, 2016, Alaska Air Group, Inc. announced that it had agreed to a merger agreement with Virgin America Inc. Alaska Air agreed to pay $57 per share in cash, for a total of around $2.6 billion. After taking into account Virgin's operating leases, Alaska Air will pay $4 billion dollars to acquire Virgin. Upon completion of the acquisition, Alaska Air became the 5th largest U.S. airline, surpassing JetBlue in terms of ASM (available seat miles). Given that both airlines focus on the West Coast, this deal strengthens Alaska Air's West Coast presence, positioning the company well to dominate this geography. However, while there are certainly strategic benefits of the transaction, an analysis from both buyer and seller perspectives reveals significant downsides as well. Virgin America From the perspective of Virgin America, the deal offers many benefits. Having gone public less than two years prior to the deal, Virgin America's stock has only been traded for a short time. During this period, the price peaked at $43 in January 2015, fluctuating around the IPO price of $30 until acquisition talks began. In the end, Virgin was acquired for nearly twice the price it has been trading at prior to the deal. For Virgin, the benefits are obvious. First, it was acquired at a healthy premium to its market value, earning significant returns for its shareholders. • 25. Southwest Airlines Competitive Position : The Domestic... Southwest Airlines Competitive Position The domestic airline industry transports 711 million souls a year. That translates into a staggering $709 billion a year revenue flow (statista.com). One firm, named Southwest Airlines, accounts for 18.3 percent of that market. That 18.3 percent market share places Southwest at the number two spot, behind American Airlines. How does Southwest Airlines successfully compete and thrive in this environment? How do they differentiate themselves from the hoards of legacy carriers? Southwest Airlines encapsulates its strategy in a simple statement: "Meet customers' short–haul travel needs at fares competitive with the cost of automobile travel (Grant, p.23). As a pioneer in low cost air travel, Southwest has successfully brought down airfares through its short route point– to–point business model, "no–frills" service, single flight strategy, and highly productive employees (Cederholm, 2014). In the following analysis we will investigate Southwest Airlines standing within the industry as a whole and their differentiation models driving success. We will also identify the firm's competitive advantages as they relate to similar firms in the industry. Current Condition and Future Outlook Southwest Airlines has humble roots, which began in 1971 when the entire operation consisted of three Boeing 737 aircraft that traveled between three Texas cities. • 49. Delta Airlines Essay EXECUTIVE SUMMARY This report provides an examinaion of the current structure, performance, stragergy and management of Delta Airlines, along with an industry analysis of the airline industry. The report uses current and past financial and statistical data for the company along with other up to date material to determine Delta's current market position and future potential. The report finds that Delta Airlines has successfully emerged from its bankruptcy in 2005 to report successful returns in both 2007 and 2008. With its 2008 acquisition of Northwest Airlines Delta became the world's largest airline, further improving its position in the airline industry. Despite this current positive position report also finds potential adversities ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Northwest brand is gradually being phased out and being replaced by Delta's name and brand. During the integration period, Delta and Northwest will continue to operate their own branded aircraft until the integration process is complete. This has given delta a combined market share of approximately 18% (Gayle, 2008) Effects of Market Structure In the United States there are generally two types of airlines: "legacy carriers," which are defined as airlines that specifically operated interstate routes prior to the Airline Deregulation Act of 1978, and "low cost" airlines that compete solely on the basis of offering the lowest price per ticket within the market in which they are operating Market conduct Market structure can be defined as patterns of behaviour by enterprises in an effort to adjust to the markets in which they operate (buy or sell). Pricing strategies and collusive behaviour mergers are a few dimensions of market conduct. It is the industry norm for a legacy carrier to offer service to most popular destinations; Delta reducing routes to a similar schedule as the low–cost airlines is not an option in the multi–billion dollar industry. In order to gain market share from low–cost airlines, Delta must create a value proposition that differentiates itself from its competitors. Many customers will pay a premium if the level of service provided is higher than the low–cost, no–frills ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 51. Where Worlds Collide By Pico Iyer "Where Worlds Collide" is an essay by Pico Iyer who talks about the expectations and reality of Los Angeles through the perspectives of travelers from different backgrounds. In "Where Worlds Collide," Pico Iyer argues that even though Los Angeles is depicted as a vicinity to receive wealth, happiness, and many opportunities– it is actually the antithesis, and instead, many harsh prejudice and unending craziness will occur instead; Iyer argues this by using allusions, anaphoras, and juxtapositions to help convey what he is saying. In the beginning of this passage, Iyer starts off with a lively and narrative tone to introduce a biblical allusion in the first paragraph; Iyer explains how many travelers come out from the airplane to reach their final destination, the "Promised Land." This allusion sparks an interest to the readers because Iyer is referring to the Los Angeles International Airport as the "Promised Land." Throughout the essay, Iyer refers to the LAX as the "Land of Opportunity" Iyer is using these two allusions to help paint a picture of what the LAX means to these naive travelers, a place filled with hopes and dreams. These allusions help correspond to the jubilance of the author's tone and helps keep the writing capture the author's passion about his story. Later in Iyer's passage, he uses anaphoras to help solidify the hectic attributes of the LAX, which contradicts the supposed "Promised Land." Iyer describes how the second thing that the travelers see is that "[i]n front of them is a Van Stop, a Bus Stop, a Courtesy Tram Stop, and a Shuttle Bus Stop..." (101). The repetition of "stop" is utilized to show that all of these "stops" are bombarding their way through towards the travelers– just as if everything is going out of control. The scenery that Iyer is depicting is about a hectic airport, not about a "Promised Land." Iyer includes more anaphoras as he talks about how "[t]hey have already braved the ranks of Asian officials, the criminal–looking security men in jackets... They already, perhaps, visited the restroom where someone has written, 'Yes on Proposition 187. Mexicans go home...'" (101). The anaphoras being used in this example shows the repetition of "they have" and the emphasis of this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

When I entered through the Customs and Immigration at Los Angeles International Airport, the officer gave me a permit to stay in the U.S. That permit was called I–94 "Proof of Legal Entry into the U.S." Said permit was for six months only. My father asked me to stay in the United States forever. I was not sure if I wanted to do that. His request for me meant not seeing my mother, sisters, and brothers any time soon. Besides, if I stay longer than the period marked in my permit, I would become what is called "Out of Status". In other words "an illegal alien." I did not want to become an illegal alien. I was new to this country, however, I knew that it was not a good idea to stay longer than allowed. I had heard so many stories about "illegal aliens." I did not want to be one of them. I conveyed my plans to my father. I told him I would go back to Nicaragua with my family, and maybe we could start a business. My idea was to purchase goods in America and sell them in Nicaragua. My father rejected my idea and clearly stated that I was staying regardless. My heart sunk when he said it did not matter if I wanted to stay or not because he had hidden my passport and my flight tickets. I started crying, and felt deceived. Out of respect to my very strict father, I did not question or fight him. Originally, he had asked me to come visit him in America. He said he would give me a tour of Los Angeles, ...
