Airline Deregulation
Airline Deregulation act of 1978
Aston A Samms Embry Riddle Aeronautical University
Abstract
The United States Airline Deregulation Act of 1978 was a dramatic turning point in America. It was
the first systematic dismantling of a comprehensive system of government control since the
Supreme Court declared the National Recovery Act unconstitutional in 1935. It was also part of a
broader movement that, with varying degrees of thoroughness, transformed such industries as
trucking, railroads, buses, cable television, stock exchange brokerage, oil and gas,
telecommunications, financial markets, and even local electric and gas utilities. Since the Airline
Deregulation Act of 1978, the airline industry has experienced significant growth, ... Show more

Today the hub and spoke concept is used at most major airports throughout the United States such as
Atlanta, Chicago, and Dallas. The new system allows air travelers two key concepts in air travel.
The first, experienced by those that live in close proximity to the central hub, saw a significant
increase in both flights available and service areas. The second key point is with air travelers that
live near the spoke or regional areas of the routes. Those near the spokes have gained hundreds of
new destinations with the new system. By traveling from the serving airports to the hubs air
travelers are able to reach destinations on servicing or regional airlines that would not have existed
prior to deregulation.
Although there was a deregulation of the airline industry, the one significant component that did not
change was the infrastructure of the airline industry. Constrained by the limitations of the airports
and the air traffic control system, airlines did not see significant increases in profits despite the large
growth and operations. As the airlines increased the number of flights and structure, the air traffic
control system did not experience the same increase. Because the ATC system was still controlled
and owned by the government, growth was, and continues to be slow.
Each year the Department of Transportation goes to Congress to request more funding for increases
in budgets to pay the salaries of more controllers and to improve ATC technology. To

My Customer Service Investigation I Have Chosen Air Mauritius
For my customer services investigation I have chosen Air Mauritius. Traveling with them often has
made me more aware of the airlines behaviour and consistency. My first impression of the staff and
cabin crew was that they were exceptionally polite and friendly. They showed good behaviour that
was respectful and considerate to everyone, helping the elderly board the flight, showing them their
seats and offering any kind of help that was required to make the passenger feel comfortable.
Although the cabin crew can get annoyed with some rude and impolite passengers, they do their best
to keep a smile on their face. They're body language was very good, they showed good posture and
notable eye contact. Their uniform was smart and sophisticated. Also to add, they used clear and
confident hand gestures to signal where all the facilities were, such as: toilets, oxygen masks,
blankets and how the TV screen operates etc... Their tone of voice was very soft and clear, there
were no communication barriers between the passenger and crew. Overall my first impressions of
the Air Mauritius was quality. The company image is quite impressive, as you walk into the airport
(Heathrow), there is clear indication of where to check in, and its distinctive red logo captures the
attention of passengers, which is also displayed on the side of all its planes. Inside the aircraft it is
immaculately clean, everything is in order especially during tight schedules. "Space – that 's the first

Porter Airline Case Study
Executive Summary
Porter Airlines is a continued success in the short haul air travel business. Its low cost structure has
enabled them to be proactive in the industry and gain a fairly large market share. Porter's strategic
successes include its quick turnaround time upon departure and arrival, its competitive ticket
pricing, web ticket sales and its exceptional customer service. In addition, Porter's low cost and low
maintenance on their Q400 turboprops give them a competitive advantage as they are put in par with
regional jets; they only need 35% capacity to break even. Furthermore, Porter increasingly becomes
more successful with its established methodical growth. In addition, Porter's success as an entrant ...

prices than other competitors, Porter airlines will regain revenue and take away competitors market
shares as they have a cost advantage compared to its competitors.
Preferred Alternative:
Due to the competitive nature of this market, Porter Airlines should base its operation strategy on
their
cost advantage and provide high quality services to enhance buyers' experience. Porter Airlines
should
establish itself as the short–haul carrier of choice by providing superior customer service,
convenient
and high frequency flights to customers in order to gain market shares to be sustainable in long term.
Issue 2:
While continuing on its expansion plan, Porter Airline faces many issues raised by limited resources.
Although Porter Airline has many competitive advantages such as excellent brand name, exclusive
control of the airport, low operating costs, innovated quiet aircrafts and methodical growth;
expanding
beyond its current operating level would be risky. Since Porter Airline charges low cost to
customers,
the high volume of customers will offset company's profit margin. There will be a need for more
funding if Porter Airline decides to expand its business; which they would be a requirement to hire
more people, purchase more aircrafts and pay more landing fees to destination airports. In order
to maintain its high quality

Diversity, Gender Diversity And Human Rights
Delta has shown great support for human rights and has supported the rights of their employees;
their vision and decisions have had positive implications for their business and managerial practices.
The founder of Delta, C.E. Woolman states, "Happy Employees Make Happy Customers Make
Happy Shareholders" (Kaufman, 2013, p.28). It is implicit that Delta cares about their employees
and understands the importance of carrying out and using diversity practices within their business.
Cultural diversity, gender diversity, and human rights have been at the forefront of this company
since the beginning; this company has succeeded and overcome many challenges mainly because of
their strong commitment to not only their employees but to the rights of the human condition.
Delta Air lines, the Non–Unionized
Delta Airlines is the only airline outside of the Middle East that is mostly non–unionized. The only
union the airline has ever been a part of is the Pilot's Association, which is the largest pilot union in
the world representing over 50,000 pilots in 31 American and Canadian airlines (Yamanouchi,
2015). Unions are usually seen as being very beneficial to an employee. There are many
repercussions that come along with unionizing for both an employee and an employer. Unions are
losing their longstanding appeal for basic security needs to companies like Delta who show more
desirable leadership to their employees Companies are also are offering more competitive benefits

The Recent Merger And Expansion Southwest Airlines
Introduction The recent merger and expansion Southwest Airlines (SWA) is experiencing challenges
their human resource department's hiring practices. The company has the potential to feel damaging
effects due to their accelerated staffing needs; a consideration is how the screening for SWA
employment is going to be handled with this influx of merging airline applicants. SWA needs to
have a plan to streamline this collaborative staffing effort. The company must focus on the strategy
and functionality of this expanded recruitment plan. As the CEO, Gary Kelly states, "Our people are
our single greatest strength and most enduring long–term competitive advantage"(Southwest). In
order to make mergers successful there are steps SWA–HR must implement to develop an
addendum to their recruitment plan, identifying this merge specific applicant pool. Once SWA
establishes a recruitment strategy that incorporates recruiting staff from these acquired airline
companies, this plan is going to give them a great competitive advantage over their competition.
SWOT
When determining how to analyze a business and their productivity, a SWOT assists senior leaders
by describing the organizations strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats.
The strengths of SWA are that since their 1971 inception they have experienced continual growth
and are ranked as a leader in the airline industry (Southwest). They believe in excellent service for
their customers and hire employees that exemplify that

Summary Of The Crash Of Avianca Airlines Flight 052
Language, from verbal to non–verbal communication, helps the audience understand speech. It is
very important to select a proper and clear language to Conway message to others. This lesson
"Language and Thought" showing the negative effects of what can arise when the meaning of
language is changed. The essay "The Crash of Avianca Airlines Flight 052" Malcolm Gladwell's
explains that event where the imprecise understanding of dialogue happens between the pilots and
air traffic workers lead to the deadly crash of an airplane. Gladwell uses "mitigated speech" as
referring to miscommunication speech as defined as, "any attempt to downplay or sugarcoat the
meaning of what is being said". Gladwell's belief that the deficit of appropriate meaning in the
pilot's words began the severity of the issue. He did not properly understand by the air traffic
workers, which finally, was the case of this deadly accident. Proper language can decrease the risk
of these accidents. In other words, we can say if the two pilots communicate in clear words and
clearly told the air traffic workers that lack of fuel was an urgent, and precarious matter, then the
crash could ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With these rules, we can set a basis for clear language and avoid the use of mitigated speech.
According to John Chaffee: improving vague words and using language in its acceptable social
context. These vague words can be a damaging meaning of what we are saying to others. It can ruin
the actual meaning of that dialogue. Chaffee added his calculation with these words, "it does not
give a precise description of the thought, feeling, or experience that the writer or speaker is trying to
communicate". Chaffee also indicates, in Thinking critically "different social contexts call for
different language responses", Therefore using the proper language with people can avoid a
vanished connection. Speaking better with people can change the bitter

Southwest Airlines 's Largest National Airline Company
Southwest in brief:
Southwest Airlines is the US's largest national airline company. As the first airline company,
Southwest is best known for its e–commerce website which positions the company as a digital
pioneer in the US airline industry. Southwest only sells flight tickets from its own website, not from
other third parties' websites. Southwest also has its own mobile application for Southwest
customers. The mobile application features flight status, check–in, book and manage travel, and
special offers. Southwest Airlines has 10 owned media channels. They are: website, Facebook page,
Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Youtube, Flickr, Linkedin, blog and the mobile app. Amongst these
owned media channels, website, Facebook, Twitter, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Mostly, only existing and loyal customers use website and mobile app for purchase. In the OOBE
stage, Southwest offers rapid reward system to encourage its customers to continue using Southwest
airlines. Moreover, Southwest offers call center in two languages: English and Spanish.
Talking about the CDJ framework, there are five stages of customer's decision journey: consider,
evaluate, buy, enjoy, advocate and bond. In consider stage, many airline's brands will come across a
customer's mind. Through social media and TV commercials, Southwest tries to be the first choice
for US domestic flights. In evaluate stage, the customer will do research about the brand and the
offer by searching online via website and rating website/blog and searching by asking family and
friends about the brand. In buy stage, customer can only purchase flight ticket from Southwest's
website and mobile app. This is the stage where customer would usually turn off the relation they
have with Southwest and go on with other airline companies because customer got used to retailer
website like Expedia and Kayak or search engine like Google.
In enjoy, advocate, bond stage, customer will advocate the brand through their personal social media
accounts or rating blog if they enjoy and satisfy with the overall services that Southwest offered. On
the other hand, the customer will sever ties with Southwest Airlines should he/she be disappointed
by the provided services. The benefit here is that if the

Virgin America
Executive Summary
Despite Virgin America's numerous awards, acclamations and recent success, the airline is still not
classified as a major carrier by the Department of Transportation (DOT).
To be considered a major carrier, an airline must achieve $1 billion dollars in operating revenue and
meet the Department of Transportation's requirements on baggage handling, on–time performance
and other operational statistics. Virgin America currently operates 39 Airbus 320A aircraft to 14
destinations around the United States and Mexico. According to the 2010 financial statements, full
year operating revenue was $724 million, a 32% increase YOY. They are the recent recipients of

Discovering new and innovative ways to expand the airline nationally, while keeping the same
quality customer satisfaction, will be the biggest challenge.
Analysis
To achieve the results desired for Virgin Airlines, the company must concentrate on expansion in
domestic niche markets by adding aircraft and destinations. By focusing on expansion within the
United States, Virgin America can expand in their specialty market without losing their touch as one
of the best customer service airlines in the world. In order to achieve this, several alternatives must
be considered to bring about the desired result by emphasizing the driving forces, and lessening the
resistant ones.
The first strategic imperatives are to expand domestic destinations. One way to accomplish this is by
increasing Virgin America's fleet size to 60 new airbuses A320 by 2013. The 60 Airbus A320 new
planes will be delivered from 2013 through 2019 with 18 on order, four being from Jazzier Airways,
a Kuwaiti airline. Four will be on the property by end of 2011, with 10 in 2011 and the last four on
grounds beginning of 2012, with a potential total of 111 planes by 2019.
The second imperative is to continue revenue growth, which will fund the expansion of the airline.
Virgin America will continue to report strong revenue performance,

Delta Airlines : A Powerful Global Company
With over eight hundred aircrafts, over one hundred seventy million customers each year, and flights
to over fifty–seven countries, Delta Airlines has proven to be a large and powerful global company.
Delta Airlines began in 1924 as Huff Daland Dusters, which was a crop–dusting and mail service
operation and the first commercial agricultural flying company in existence. C.E. Woolman
purchased Huff Daland Dusters in 1928 and changed the name to Delta Air Service. The company
then had its first passenger flight the following year, which carried five passengers and one pilot.
After four years of suspension of passenger flights, they resumed in 1934 and renamed the company
once again to Delta Airlines. Delta started building their reputation as a socially conscious company
when they took part in the war effort in 1942, by modifying their aircraft and training army pilots
and mechanics. Delta has portrayed themselves to be a socially responsible company. Fortune
Magazine agreed when they made them number thirty–nine on the Top 50 World's Most Admired
Companies of 2015. It is important for all companies to be aware of their corporate social
responsibility, not only to have a good image but also to positively impact their community. This
means that they must go beyond what is required of them by law, regulations, or protection groups.
Delta states that they are dedicated to corporate social responsibility by community involvement,
and employee pride and equality. Community

The immediate results were a huge drop in air traffic due to safety & security concerns of the
people. o International airlines are greatly affected by trade relations that their country has with
others. Unless governments of the two countries trade with each other, there could be restrictions of
flying into particular area leading to a loss of potential air traffic.
Economic Factors
Business cycles have a wide reaching impact on the airline industry. During recession, Oman Air is
considered a luxury & therefore spending on air travel is cut which leads to reduce prices. During
prosperity phase people indulge themselves in travel & prices increase.
After the September 11 incidents, the world economy plunged into global recession due to the
depressed sentiment of consumers. In Oman, the recession did not make any huge impact even
though Oman Air also had a % of loss. Because some companies in Oman due to recession the top
level managers were given economic class tickets instead of business class plane tickets. So there is
number of decrease in the travelers during recession time.
The loss of income for airlines led to higher operational costs not only due to low demand but also
due to higher insurance costs, this prompted the industry to lay off employees, which further fuelled
the recession as spending decreased due to the rise in unemployment.

The Need, Idea, And Tested Concept

The Need, Idea, and Tested Concept Today, businesses play a major role in our world. It is an
innovative and competitive activity that shapes society. It is all about satisfying the wants and needs
people cannot satisfy themselves. Creating its costumers the center of their business. Business is not
about the profits but rather it is about satisfying your costumer. Young visionary entrepreneurs attack
the market by looking at the untouched or abandoned spots. Bridging North America and South
America, Central America including El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Belize, Nicaragua, Costa
Rica and Panama have a population of 31 million people. Seventy five prevent of these people travel
by land and twenty five prevent travel by air. Violent crime in Central America is reaching
breathtaking levels. Murder rates in the region are among the highest in the world. The majority of
people traveling by road are exposed to danger in the borders of these countries. So if a tourist
would like to travel within the Central American countries, it would be most likely on air. The
problem with traveling on air are the prices. Ten years ago, where there was more competition,
prices were medium low. Through the years, one airline bought all of the small airlines in the region
becoming the biggest airline. Avianca Airlines is now the king of Central America and part of South
America. Although their service

Essay on X-Ray Screeners Could See X-Rated X-Rays
In this article "Airport Screeners Could See X–rated X–ray's" Joe Sharkey tells us a little bit about a
new airline security program. Sharkey advertizes that airlines are trying to bring in X–ray units that
will be able to look beyond clothing, to the outline of bare skin. This precaution is becoming
effective because technology is getting more advanced. Since metal detectors can't be as reliable as
we once thought, serious measures need to be demanded. However, scientists have discovered the
previous precautions of metal detectors are irrelevant due to liquid hazard that they cannot detect.
This article even says, "it found that federal airport screeners using metal–detecting magnetometers

This article informs us about the pros and cons of X–ray scanners. Yes, they are more advanced then
the previous technology before the tragedy of 9–11 and have a high chance of detecting hazardous
substances. On the other hand, they invade your privacy down to your nude body. Is it law abiding
to let a security guard be able to scan your children? In our society we know of nude to be
specifically sexual. Our nude bodies are something we keep to ourselves. It comes as a disgrace to
some to see people reveal their body to strangers, or the public. There are professions that some may
engage in that are known as exotic dancing, which is the revealing of the body. In Stripped: Inside
the lives of an exotic dancer, Bernadette Barton says "even though this act is legal, it breaks the
rules of being a respectable lady in this society." Being the case, would make x–ray scanning for the
public against the rules of a respectable society. In this article Joe Sharkey introduced his claim very
well and surprisingly neutral minded. From a readers perspective he was able to produce
information in a structured and very un bias manner. This article gave a great outlook on what all
comes with the production of a new security precaution. This article was very effective to the public.
Being the fact that this article had no warrant, makes it easier for the public to evaluate and think
critically on which claim they prefer. Also due to the fact this article

The American Of The Canadian Empire
Once considered the gem of the Canadian Crown Corporations, Air Canada was afflicted by a storm
of financial problems in the early nineties. This onslaught of financial difficulties, which had been
created largely by the Gulf War and the Canadian recession, increased Air Canada's losses increased
at worrisome rates. Then, after suffering losses upwards of $218 million in 1991, the Board of
Directors recognized the need for a corporate overhaul and consequently appointed Hollis Harris as
the Chief Executive Officer the following year. Harris, a 37–year veteran in the highly competitive
American airline industry, was given the challenging task of returning the struggling airline to
profitability. When he was appointed, many Canadians were outraged that an American would lead a
privatized Canadian company and feared this decision to be a step towards the impending
Americanization of the Canadian culture. Others' speculated that Harris was appointed for the sole
purpose of training and mentoring Air Canada's future leader . However, these individuals were all
proven wrong when Harris' transformed the reeling airline into a leading competitor in the global
airline industry. His American background, which was condemned by many, played a significant
role in the expanding Air Canada's international reach. His experience in the aviation sector
combined with his extraordinary leadership skills, helped reduce costs and placed Air Canada on the
path to financial recovery. Finally,

There have been various steps across the globe directed at improving aviation safety. This is done by
engaging in partnerships with the various manufacturers, regulators, operators, unions, and other
stakeholders in the industry. The most feasible way of dealing with aviation safety is to analyze the
main factors that cause risks within the aviation sector, these ranges from human factors and
outdated equipment to recent threats like terrorism (Caldwell & Williams, 2012). Insecurity leads
not only disruption of the business of airline companies but also loss of lives and this is

rates by 80% within a time frame of a decade, using the same strategies that had been adopted by the
Commercial Aviation Safety Team. The team uses real time accident data to analyze the causative
factors of any accident and then based on this; action was taken to ensure that such accidents did not
occur again in the future. To ensure full representation, the team consisted of safety experts drawn
from regulators, operators, and engine and airframe manufacturers (Lutz, 2011). They managed to

In the early 1990 's top–tier customers wanted to be treated consistently on every flight. Now these
customers desire individual pampering.
As consequence of September 11, 2001 one can observe several trends like a decline of passenger
traffic as well as higher demand of safety arrangements. It is not certain whether this will be
temporarily or if it will last longer. At this moment it is uncertain how the aviation industry will
develop in years to come.
The position of Singapore Airlines and reasons for prior success If one looks at numerous lists like
the Zagat International Airline Survey of February 2001 you could say Singapore Airlines (SIA) is
the best Airline Company in the world. In the segments overall, comfort, service and food they are
not only the best in the premium class but also in the economy class. These high qualifications are a
result of a life long philosophy that started since the beginning of SIA in 1972. SIA has always
pursued a position of product leader corresponding to Treacy and Wiersema (1993). The product of
airline companies can be described as the service of taking the customer from one place to another
true air. SIA has always tried to do this in the best way possible. With the newest airplanes and a
high level of service they have gained product leadership. This section explains the prior success of
SIA.

Porter Airlines SWOT Analysis Essay
Situation Analysis: Entrepreneur Robert Deluce introduced Porter Airlines in 2006 aiming to create
a higher value experience for its customers compared to other major players and competitors in the
Canadian airline industry such as Air Canada and West Jet. The brand image is designed to provide
upscale and refined service to its customers, giving the sense of traveling in first class with free
amenities that competitors provide at very high prices such as meals, beverages, wine, etc. Even
thought Porter has had considerable success in attracting new customers, it is still a small player in

Opportunities: Porter Airlines positioning as a quality/social value company allows it to seek
partnership opportunities with other companies. Ex: A points system with gold and platinum level
credit cards providers. They can also look for ventures that will enhance the experience of the
business traveler such as hotels, efficient and comfortable shuttle services for flights to "Golden
Triangle" destinations. Furthermore Porter can create partnership with hotels that attend the majority
of business travelers within Toronto Montreal and Ottawa. Threats: Major competitors such as Air
Canada have dominated the market for a lengthy amount of time becoming a synonym for business
travel. Air Canada has a greater amount of flight connections and destinations than Porter Airlines.
Business travelers may be already enrolled in Air Canada's loyalty points system influencing them
in staying with Air Canada in order to continue redeeming their points. West Jet's low introduction
airfare prices and the aim for companies to reduce costs may lure Business travelers their way,
putting Porter Airlines at a disadvantage since they are in the introductory stage and reducing prices
may translate in to going out of business. Problem Statement: Porter Airlines is a new company

Airline Food Quality Improvements At The Food Industry
Airline Food Quality Improvements Culinary arts are the act of preparing, cooking and presenting
food in the form of a meal. This process is a science with infinite possibilities and no limits of
opportunities. Sullivan (2014) makes the case that food preparation is considered an art. He defines
art as "to reveal something hidden". While the preparation of meals can take many shapes and forms
the end means is to allow consumers to consume. People consume meals of a vast variety for many
different reasons. Whether it is the weight lifter bulking up, the traveling sales man grabbing a quick
bite, or a mother preparing a dinner for her family consumption is a necessary and routine event.
The consistent and necessary event provides ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Having the information provides the foundation of understanding. This allows offerings to be
tailored to meet consumer wants. While food preparation can be considered an art, there are some
mitigating factors affecting what type of food offerings can be made available in certain settings.
Complementary items, necessary to prepare meals, can limit the availability of what can be offered.
For example if a kitchen does not have a fryer it is not able to prepare fried foods. An airliner will
not maintain a fully stocked kitchen and therefore may be limited to microwaveable dishes. These
challenges must be accounted for when determining the culinary menu. Understanding potential
limiting factors can assure the best possible offerings are available for the target audience.
This analysis will evaluate how a suffering airline, respective to its quality of food offerings, can
improve outcomes using market research and customer feedback. This information can be used to
support changes in their airline menu. These changes can ensure a better consumer perception

Avianca Flight 052 Case Study
Culture in the Cockpit
History of Avianca Flight 052 On January 25th, 1990, Avianca Flight 052, a Boeing 707, departed
Bogotá, Colombia, South America, enroute to JFK International Airport, New York, after making a
scheduled intermediate stop in Medellin, Colombia, South America (FAA, 2017). The flight
departed Medellin at 1508 EST with 149 passengers and 9 crewmembers on board (Krause, 2003).
Due to weather conditions at JFK there were numerous flight delays for inbound aircraft, and
Avianca Flight 052 was given three separate holding instructions while enroute to JFK (Krause,
2003). Shortly after 2133 EST, Avianca Flight 052 crashed in a wooded area near Cove Neck, Long
Island, New York, as a result of fuel starvation while returning for a second approach to landing at
JFK (NTSB, 1991). The captain of Flight 052 had over 16,000 hours of flight time, with more than
1,500 hours in the 707 (Krause, 2003). The first officer had substantially less experience with about
1,800 hours of total flight time, and only 64 hours in the 707 (Krause, 2003). The second officer, or
flight engineer, had over 10,000 hours total flight time, and more than 3,000 of that was in the 707
(Krause, 2003). All three crewmembers were citizens of the Republic of Colombia, and the captain
was 52 years old, the first officer was 28, and the second officer was 45 years old (NTSB, 1991).
Just prior to the crash the actual weather at JFK was poor. The ceilings were reported to be 200 feet

Swot Analysis Of Brenneman 's Leadership
Brenneman's leadership actions clearly showed his in depth understanding of the airline industry and
where Continental needed to achieve to bring this company out of a third bankruptcy. His actions in
driving his staff not only fell into each quadrant of the Competing Values Framework (CVF)
described by Quinn but can also be seen linked to Nohria's 4+2 formula.
Using the first quadrant 'Human Relations Model' of the CVF which focused on building a
collaborative environment, Brenneman was able to see that there was major reliability problems
with flight scheduling and operating departments. He understood the importance for departments to
work in cohesion on the flight schedules, otherwise problems would arise such as long delays due to

Both the flight scheduling and operating departments were given the goal of improving the airline's
reliability rating through the flight schedule planning. The departments were made to be held
accountable and if successful they would be rewarded for their achievements with an incentive of
$65 per month. In the second quadrant 'Open Systems Model' of the CVF which emphasizes new
change to create value, Brenneman encouraged innovative thinking through the adoption of an idea
formulate by his bag handlers. The idea involved creating additional value for customers through the
priority bags tag. This program entailed placing priority tags on the airline's best customer bags to
ensure their bags were unloaded first off the plane. As a result, this improved the customer
experience without costing the airline a cent. Referring to Nohria's 4+2 Formula 'Strategy',
Brenneman's actions effectively supported its strategy of improving product offerings to become the
airline of preference. It's Go Forward product plan aided in the transformation of customer
experience through reducing baggage mishandles and increasing on–time performance. In addition,
Brenneman's actions also effectively supported the goal of building a new corporate culture
comprising of new innovation.
The third quadrant 'Internal Process Model' of the CVF relates control orientation, that is – to the
consistency of organisational policies and processes. Brenneman's actions of control can be seen

Tale of Two Airlines in The Network Age: Or Why The Spirit of King George III Is Alive and Well!
As Professor Roger McPherson's wait to go through the security process a second time dragged on
into its third hour on this Spring day in 2002, (all passengers had to be rescreened upon the
discovery that one of the airport screening machines was unplugged) he was reminded of another
delayed business trip and the role that information technology played in the story.
At 5:30pm on February 15, 1995, 200 feet off the ground, Professor Roger McPherson gazed
anxiously through the fog as his airplane moved to touch down at Hartsfield Airport in Atlanta, more
than 1 hour and 15 minutes late. He had 30 minutes to catch his ... Show more content on

Flying to the United Kingdom to connect to Frankfurt would be a hassle and unnecessary since the
purpose of stopping in the United Kingdom was now totally negated. Glancing up at the departure
board, McPherson was surprised to see a 7:55pm boarding departure for a plane to Frankfurt, nine
gates away. Pulling into the gate at 8:02pm, he discovered several things:
1. The plane was at the gate, and with commendable dispatch the gate agent relieved him of his
London boarding pass and his London–to–Frankfurt ticket and hustled him onto the plane minutes
before the door closed.
2. The cabin attendant, giving him his favorite drink, explained that because of favorable tail winds
across the Atlantic and the fact that eight passengers (plus now McPherson and one other) had very
tight connections, they had decided to hold the plane for 15 minutes to get the extra passengers and
still arrive on schedule. The note of pride in the cabin attendant 's voice was evident.
One–and–a–half hours later, appropriately wined and dined, McPherson drifted off to sleep,
reflecting on what a remarkable case study had played out in front of him in the previous two hours.
Information technology, operations strategy, management control, an empowered (also
unempowered) work force, and service management had been interwoven into a tableau. A revised
format for his speech in Frankfurt began to emerge.

Abstract The civil aviation is an extremely competitive, safety–sensitive, high technology service

The primary focus of HRM strategy is the manner in which the HR department aligns general
activities, policies and procedures with the opportunity imperatives of the organization. Such
relevant HRM expertise constitutes nothing less than a powerful strategic opportunity. Methodology
The original purpose of the audit's companion review of the literature was to find other empirical
studies of the airline industry regarding HRM practices, from an applied perspective, with which to
compare and contrast the results of the audit presented later in this article. None were found. This is
consistent with the findings of other researchers. M. L. Thomas (1997), author of the book, A
Portfolio Management Approach to Strategic Airline Planning, comments on the scarcity of research
in the area of airline management. "In reviewing the literature on international aviation, it is clear
that researchers tend to analyze the industry at a macro–level. Although it has gained much attention
recently . . . the topic of international commercial airline management suffers from a lack of
theoretical and empirical work, and the scarcity of literature from a microeconomic perspective."
According to J. Eaton (2001), author of the book, Globalization and Human Resource in the Airline
Industry, research is particularly difficult because "Airline managers are even more secretive and

Southwest Airlines And The Airline Industry
Executive Summary Southwest Airlines is a competitor in the airline industry who models
themselves as a low fare company who cares about people. These two aspects are that backbone to
their business. It is what sets them apart from their major competitors, such as Delta/Northwest,
Continental/United, JetBlue, and Allegiant. Government regulation has allowed for more travel due
to deregulation. This means there are more consumers than ever entering the industry. As more
consumers enter the market, more competitors arise to assist that demand. Southwest Airlines has
kept their stronghold on the market by continuing to offer their low fares, while not sacrificing their
caring attitude towards consumers and employees.
Within every industry, there will be threats. In the airline industry, there is the threat of terroristic
violence, and technological issues. Also, governmental interference and social acceptance will
continue to shape how the industry operates. Southwest Airlines will need to predict and adapt to all
possible threats in the industry. Currently Southwest Airlines' strengths in the industry are their
ability to keep fares low due to the Airline Deregulation Act of 1978. However, their weaknesses are
competitors trying to copy their model.
Three alternative strategies are proposed in this analysis, but only one option is deemed possible for
success. It is important for Southwest Airlines to remain in the low fare business and offer the
Southwest Spirit. That is

Crash Of Avianca Airlines Flight 052 Summary
Week 6 Discussion The importance of proper communication is emphasized in our lesson this week
by showing the negative effects of what can occur when the meaning of language is altered.
Malcolm Gladwell's "The Crash of Avianca Airlines Flight 052" explains the actual event where the
inaccurate interpretation of dialogue between the pilots and air traffic workers lead to the fatal crash
of an airplane. Gladwell refers to this miscommunication as "mitigated speech", and defines the
concept in his article as, "any attempt to downplay or sugarcoat the meaning of what is being said"
(276). To clarify, when people pacify the true significance of their words, they change what they
initially wanted their words to mean. This prompts Gladwell's belief that the lack of appropriate
meaning in the pilot's words caused the severity of the issue to not be fully comprehended by the air
traffic workers, which ultimately, lead to the devastating accident. In other words, if the two pilots
used words that clearly told the air traffic workers that their lack of fuel was an urgent, dangerous
matter, Gladwell feels the crash could have been prevented. ... Show more content on

General Environment Analysis of the Airline Industry
The U.S. airline industry has been in a chaotic state for a number of years. In 1993, a U.S.
government report indicated that the industry had "Lost huge amounts of money in the past three
years, and it has never made a sustained, substantial return on investment..." According to the Air
Transport Association, the airline industry trade association, the loss from 1990 through 1994 was
about $13 billion, while from 1995 through 2000, the airlines earned about $23 billion and then lost
about $35 billion from 2001 through 2005. Early in 2006 the association expected about a $10
billion loss in 2005.

Through these agreements, airlines can share facilities and operational costs (e.g., maintenance
facilities, sales offices) and negotiate volume discounts on large purchases. Passengers benefit from
lower prices (due to lower expenses) as well as optimized routes and pooled loyalty rewards,
especially in regards to international travel. Since the deregulation of the airline industry began,
airline ownership has been limited to companies and individuals of the operating country.
Consolidation is beneficial in two ways for airline companies, as it typically reduces redundant
operating costs and raises revenues through higher fares.
The airline industry can be separated into four categories by the U.S. Department of Transportation:
International
130+ seat planes that have the ability to take passengers just about anywhere in the world.
Companies in this category typically have annual revenue of $1 billion or more.
National
Usually these airlines seat 100–150 people and have revenues between $100 million and $1 billion.
Regional
Companies with revenues less than $100 million that focus on short–haul flights.
Cargo
These are airlines generally transport goods.

According to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, the airline industry experienced losses from
2001 to 2004. In 2005, the industry was profitable for the first time in four years and stayed
profitable through 2007. The economic and financial crisis in 2008 took a toll on the industry,
causing a few airlines to file bankruptcy. The improvement of the economy in 2009 and 2010 helped
the industry get back to profitability. Airlines were using tactics to increase revenues, including
charging baggage fees, charging for food and drinks on board, and some airlines charged additional
fees for seats with more leg–room. The large increases in revenues helped to offset the higher fuel
costs, helping the companies achieve profitability.

as example, Comair want to replace the old system but there is none of them working or researching

proper situation. This is that way to lower the risk whereby keeping the old system working if the
new system fail. Throghout this stage the replacement can work smoothly. From the case study I
also realise that the staff of Comair does not play their own role. This is because they did not check
with their competitor as other competitor already using the new system. For me, I will always check
with the competitor current information system. Checking does not mean to be a "copy cat" but to

Was there anything Delta executives could have done during the merger to have avoided this type of

during the merger to avoid this tyoe of exposure from their new acquisition. The exposure could
been avoided if Delta had done a comprehensive analysis of the risk that this new system posed to

British Airways : The Top Airlines
British Airways is one of the top airlines both globally and in the UK. It boasts a large global flying
network and provides travel to over 170 destinations on 280 aircrafts. Annually it serves 40 million
customers making it an accessible, convenient brand, and an Industry leader (British Airways). In
comparison to the original brand Virgin Atlantic, British Airways markets itself very differently
despite sharing a niche and a market segment. The 4–Ps analysis will be a useful tool in examining
these differences further, as well as analysing the major differences to determine how British
Airways has distinguished itself from rivals such as Virgin Atlantic.
When we analysed Virgin Atlantic we saw that they were putting forward a luxurious brand identity
with a price point to match. They are regarded as an expensive and high–service choice for people
who are willing to spend a little bit more money in order to have a higher quality of customer
service on their flight. This put them in the high–price, high–service quadrant along with many other
competitors including British Airways.
One of the major factors in airline marketing is that all airlines perform the same task; they take
passengers from point A to point B. The product itself comes with the level of service that is
provided surrounding this task. Like Virgin Atlantic, British Airways provides a higher quality in
exchange for higher price. This is an example of service performance. British Airways has a strong

West Caribbean Airways Flight Analysis Essay
In the early hours of the morning on Tuesday, August 16th 2005, West Caribbean Airways Flight
708 was a West Caribbean Airways charter flight which crashed in a mountainous region of
northwest Venezuela. With eight crew members and 152 passengers the McDonnell Douglas MD–80
departed Tocumen International Airport (PTY) in Panama City, Panama and headed to Martinique
Aimé Césaire International Airport (FDF) in Fort–de–France, Martinique, France. After initially
climbing to FL310, and subsequently to FL330 to level off, the Captain of the aircraft noticed the
engines sounded abnormal. Reacting to sounds of the engines, the Captain began to take corrective
actions to correct the problem, by starting a rapid descent as a precaution. The time from the initial
radio call from the first officer declaring engine problems to the subsequent crash took only 9:00
minutes. This research paper will delve into the chain of mistakes that were made in order for this
terrible accident to have occured.
Background In 1998 the charter service West Caribbean Airways was started in Medellín, Columbia
by company founder Hassan Tannir. The organization focused flights primarily in Central America,
part of the mainland of Colombia, and San Andrés in the Caribbean. It operates largely domestic
services, and its main base of operations are out of Olaya Herrera Airport (EOH), Medellín. West

(BBC, 2013:online)
Compensation is reduced by 50% if the ultimate arrival time is within two hours for short haul
flights, within three hours for medium haul flights and within four hours for long haul flights.
(Which, no date:online)
Main points
On reviewing the legislation already in place; If the reason for delay doesn't compromise the safety
of the passengers then it is unfair for the customer to be paying for a service that they are not
receiving and therefore should be compensated for the delay as this delay could have a detrimental
effect on the rest of their trip and could cause them to miss events or connections the other side.
The introduction of the denied boarding regulation should be seen as an incentive for companies to
make their services more efficient. If they achieve this then in turn they would not have to pay out
compensation for customers as delayed flights would be much less.
Ethics can also be affected due to delayed or cancelled flight. BBC reports of a couple, Robert
Evans and Melissa Taylor who passengers of Thomas Cook flight that's had to sleep on the floor, no
hotel was offered when their flight got cancelled after being delayed for 9 hours previously.

The four different environments are often referred to as PEST and allow a PESTanalysis to be

The PEST factor that has contributed to the airlines industry for many years, but has brought a
drastic change was from the disaster on September 11th
2001.
Political environment concerns the role of the government and its affects in an organisation it also
includes the extent to which the government intervenes in the economy. Due to the terrorist attack

The main issue that would affect the airline, that would be seen as a short term effect would be that a
company share values have decreased rapidly. However this is not a long term worry, as things
would eventually start getting back to normal, share value would increase. The British economy has
lost put, as many people are scared to fly into America, and therefore the demand is low to travel,
however the supply is high, this could be a dangerous factor for the small airline companies that do
not have enough funding in the first place, now they are literally on the verge of bankruptcy.
Social environment is of great importance when being applied to different organisations, in case the
airline industry. The short term affect that the social factor has on the airline industry is that, people
have cut down on using flying as a mean of travel after the
September 11th incident. Many of the flights have been cancelled from
America, this resulting to financial difficulties for British Airways.
The long term affect that is going to have is that if there are not as many passengers, then the
amount of staff that the companies have hired are no longer needed. However there are some people
that have not been affected by the September 11th incident, many people have taken this as an
advantage, of cheaper tickets. This however is a short term affect, due to as soon as

Ans3.– These fully automated information kiosks provide a very high business value for the airline
industry which is one of the most emerging fields because of the increasing globalization. Thus a
large no of people keep travelling for business purposes to various countries. These corporate people
do not like spending their precious time waiting in the queue to check–in to the airport. As a result,
the implementation of such self service kiosks are always of a very high value for the airline
industry as it helps them getting more customers.
Yes, they do give an airline company a lot of competitive advantage. When an airline company
implements such an information system, by which a customer can do all the things sitting at home
and has to just walk in to the airport half an hour before his flight would surely give that company a
competitive advantage over the others who are not implementing. Because the customers of those
airline companies have to spend a lot of time after coming to the airport when the other company

Rather than focusing on cutting jobs, they focused on reducing expenses and cutting back on
unnecessary items. The terrorist attacks are only one of the causes of crisis in the industry because
there are several issues that threaten the industry. One that was mentioned earlier gas prices. Labor
disputes are a factor as well. You may say that the airline industry has hit an extremely bad era. The
changes that these airlines are being driven to make will be very different from the way it used to be.
As most people know, the government has had much in bailing out business and the transformation
that some have undergone and the airline industry is no exception. The government has a major
influence on the restructuring of the industry and the air transportation system in general. To combat
the escalating expenses of enhanced security and diminishing supply demand, employee layoffs and
service trimming were the first areas to see cutbacks. This is certainly a competitive industry with
new companies surfacing and others failing. The restructuring will definitely influence the airline
industry's inclination concerning the development of both domestic and international service. It has
been hard for this industry to keep revenue up and cover all the rising expenses, which makes for an
obstruction in growth and prosperity. Gas prices play a massive key role in the struggle of this
industry. At one point gas prices were higher than ever before, which then started

Distribution strategies exist in three forms: exclusive distribution, selective distribution, and
intensive distribution. Kotler and Keller (2009) define each of the distribution strategies as:
exclusive distribution limits the number of intermediaries used; selective distribution depends on a
limited number of intermediaries; and intensive distribution works with as many outlets as feasible.
The distribution strategy of the airlines industry was not a part of its early history, but is now
integral to the success of airline organizations.

(as cited in Thomas, 2015, para. 3). With Delta making strides such as this, they are communicating
with their employees that there are ways to relax even when at work and that can help to cut down

Avianca Flight 52: a Case Study on Human Error
Relevant facts/ Background Avianca Flight 52 touched the ground for a final time on January 25
1990, 16 miles from JFK airport in Cove Neck, Long Island, N.Y., completely out of fuel. The
Boeing 707–321B was carrying 158 people coming from Medellin, Columbia, in which 85 people
survived. The crash of Avianca Flight 52 was the largest rescue operation in New York prior to 9/11.
There was a severe blizzard on the north–east coast of the U.S. causing bad weather with a low
pressure system and wind shear. JFK airport authorities had been told to keep a higher landing rate
than safe at 33 planes attempting to land per hour, on one runway – the typical rate being 52 in good
weather, with all runways open. The airport was experiencing a rate ... Show more content on

Airline Deregulation

  • 1. Airline Deregulation Airline Deregulation act of 1978 Aston A Samms Embry Riddle Aeronautical University Abstract The United States Airline Deregulation Act of 1978 was a dramatic turning point in America. It was the first systematic dismantling of a comprehensive system of government control since the Supreme Court declared the National Recovery Act unconstitutional in 1935. It was also part of a broader movement that, with varying degrees of thoroughness, transformed such industries as trucking, railroads, buses, cable television, stock exchange brokerage, oil and gas, telecommunications, financial markets, and even local electric and gas utilities. Since the Airline Deregulation Act of 1978, the airline industry has experienced significant growth, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Today the hub and spoke concept is used at most major airports throughout the United States such as Atlanta, Chicago, and Dallas. The new system allows air travelers two key concepts in air travel. The first, experienced by those that live in close proximity to the central hub, saw a significant increase in both flights available and service areas. The second key point is with air travelers that live near the spoke or regional areas of the routes. Those near the spokes have gained hundreds of new destinations with the new system. By traveling from the serving airports to the hubs air travelers are able to reach destinations on servicing or regional airlines that would not have existed prior to deregulation. Although there was a deregulation of the airline industry, the one significant component that did not change was the infrastructure of the airline industry. Constrained by the limitations of the airports and the air traffic control system, airlines did not see significant increases in profits despite the large growth and operations. As the airlines increased the number of flights and structure, the air traffic control system did not experience the same increase. Because the ATC system was still controlled and owned by the government, growth was, and continues to be slow. Each year the Department of Transportation goes to Congress to request more funding for increases in budgets to pay the salaries of more controllers and to improve ATC technology. To ... • 3. My Customer Service Investigation I Have Chosen Air Mauritius For my customer services investigation I have chosen Air Mauritius. Traveling with them often has made me more aware of the airlines behaviour and consistency. My first impression of the staff and cabin crew was that they were exceptionally polite and friendly. They showed good behaviour that was respectful and considerate to everyone, helping the elderly board the flight, showing them their seats and offering any kind of help that was required to make the passenger feel comfortable. Although the cabin crew can get annoyed with some rude and impolite passengers, they do their best to keep a smile on their face. They're body language was very good, they showed good posture and notable eye contact. Their uniform was smart and sophisticated. Also to add, they used clear and confident hand gestures to signal where all the facilities were, such as: toilets, oxygen masks, blankets and how the TV screen operates etc... Their tone of voice was very soft and clear, there were no communication barriers between the passenger and crew. Overall my first impressions of the Air Mauritius was quality. The company image is quite impressive, as you walk into the airport (Heathrow), there is clear indication of where to check in, and its distinctive red logo captures the attention of passengers, which is also displayed on the side of all its planes. Inside the aircraft it is immaculately clean, everything is in order especially during tight schedules. "Space – that 's the first thing you 'll ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Porter Airline Case Study Executive Summary Porter Airlines is a continued success in the short haul air travel business. Its low cost structure has enabled them to be proactive in the industry and gain a fairly large market share. Porter's strategic successes include its quick turnaround time upon departure and arrival, its competitive ticket pricing, web ticket sales and its exceptional customer service. In addition, Porter's low cost and low maintenance on their Q400 turboprops give them a competitive advantage as they are put in par with regional jets; they only need 35% capacity to break even. Furthermore, Porter increasingly becomes more successful with its established methodical growth. In addition, Porter's success as an entrant ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By offering lower fare prices than other competitors, Porter airlines will regain revenue and take away competitors market shares as they have a cost advantage compared to its competitors. Preferred Alternative: Due to the competitive nature of this market, Porter Airlines should base its operation strategy on their cost advantage and provide high quality services to enhance buyers' experience. Porter Airlines should establish itself as the short–haul carrier of choice by providing superior customer service, convenient and high frequency flights to customers in order to gain market shares to be sustainable in long term.
  • 6. Issue 2: While continuing on its expansion plan, Porter Airline faces many issues raised by limited resources. Although Porter Airline has many competitive advantages such as excellent brand name, exclusive control of the airport, low operating costs, innovated quiet aircrafts and methodical growth; expanding beyond its current operating level would be risky. Since Porter Airline charges low cost to customers, the high volume of customers will offset company's profit margin. There will be a need for more funding if Porter Airline decides to expand its business; which they would be a requirement to hire more people, purchase more aircrafts and pay more landing fees to destination airports. Diversity, Gender Diversity And Human Rights Delta has shown great support for human rights and has supported the rights of their employees; their vision and decisions have had positive implications for their business and managerial practices. The founder of Delta, C.E. Woolman states, "Happy Employees Make Happy Customers Make Happy Shareholders" (Kaufman, 2013, p.28). It is implicit that Delta cares about their employees and understands the importance of carrying out and using diversity practices within their business. Cultural diversity, gender diversity, and human rights have been at the forefront of this company since the beginning; this company has succeeded and overcome many challenges mainly because of their strong commitment to not only their employees but to the rights of the human condition. Delta Air lines, the Non–Unionized Delta Airlines is the only airline outside of the Middle East that is mostly non–unionized. The only union the airline has ever been a part of is the Pilot's Association, which is the largest pilot union in the world representing over 50,000 pilots in 31 American and Canadian airlines (Yamanouchi, 2015). Unions are usually seen as being very beneficial to an employee. There are many repercussions that come along with unionizing for both an employee and an employer. Unions are losing their longstanding appeal for basic security needs to companies like Delta who show more desirable leadership to their employees Companies are also are offering more competitive benefits that deter the ... The Recent Merger And Expansion Southwest Airlines Introduction The recent merger and expansion Southwest Airlines (SWA) is experiencing challenges their human resource department's hiring practices. The company has the potential to feel damaging effects due to their accelerated staffing needs; a consideration is how the screening for SWA employment is going to be handled with this influx of merging airline applicants. SWA needs to have a plan to streamline this collaborative staffing effort. The company must focus on the strategy and functionality of this expanded recruitment plan. As the CEO, Gary Kelly states, "Our people are our single greatest strength and most enduring long–term competitive advantage"(Southwest). In order to make mergers successful there are steps SWA–HR must implement to develop an addendum to their recruitment plan, identifying this merge specific applicant pool. • 12. Summary Of The Crash Of Avianca Airlines Flight 052 Language, from verbal to non–verbal communication, helps the audience understand speech. It is very important to select a proper and clear language to Conway message to others. This lesson "Language and Thought" showing the negative effects of what can arise when the meaning of language is changed. The essay "The Crash of Avianca Airlines Flight 052" Malcolm Gladwell's explains that event where the imprecise understanding of dialogue happens between the pilots and air traffic workers lead to the deadly crash of an airplane. Gladwell uses "mitigated speech" as referring to miscommunication speech as defined as, "any attempt to downplay or sugarcoat the meaning of what is being said". Gladwell's belief that the deficit of appropriate meaning in the pilot's words began the severity of the issue. He did not properly understand by the air traffic workers, which finally, was the case of this deadly accident. Proper language can decrease the risk of these accidents. In other words, we can say if the two pilots communicate in clear words and clearly told the air traffic workers that lack of fuel was an urgent, and precarious matter, then the crash could ... Virgin America Executive Summary Despite Virgin America's numerous awards, acclamations and recent success, the airline is still not classified as a major carrier by the Department of Transportation (DOT). To be considered a major carrier, an airline must achieve $1 billion dollars in operating revenue and meet the Department of Transportation's requirements on baggage handling, on–time performance and other operational statistics. Virgin America currently operates 39 Airbus 320A aircraft to 14 destinations around the United States and Mexico. Discovering new and innovative ways to expand the airline nationally, while keeping the same quality customer satisfaction, will be the biggest challenge. Analysis To achieve the results desired for Virgin Airlines, the company must concentrate on expansion in domestic niche markets by adding aircraft and destinations. By focusing on expansion within the United States, Virgin America can expand in their specialty market without losing their touch as one of the best customer service airlines in the world. In order to achieve this, several alternatives must be considered to bring about the desired result by emphasizing the driving forces, and lessening the resistant ones. The first strategic imperatives are to expand domestic destinations. One way to accomplish this is by increasing Virgin America's fleet size to 60 new airbuses A320 by 2013. The 60 Airbus A320 new planes will be delivered from 2013 through 2019 with 18 on order, four being from Jazzier Airways, a Kuwaiti airline. Four will be on the property by end of 2011, with 10 in 2011 and the last four on grounds beginning of 2012, with a potential total of 111 planes by 2019. The second imperative is to continue revenue growth, which will fund the expansion of the airline. Virgin America will continue to report strong revenue performance, ... Then, after suffering losses upwards of $218 million in 1991, the Board of Directors recognized the need for a corporate overhaul and consequently appointed Hollis Harris as the Chief Executive Officer the following year. Harris, a 37–year veteran in the highly competitive American airline industry, was given the challenging task of returning the struggling airline to profitability. When he was appointed, many Canadians were outraged that an American would lead a privatized Canadian company and feared this decision to be a step towards the impending Americanization of the Canadian culture. Others' speculated that Harris was appointed for the sole purpose of training and mentoring Air Canada's future leader . However, these individuals were all proven wrong when Harris' transformed the reeling airline into a leading competitor in the global airline industry. • 51. Southwest Airlines And The Airline Industry Executive Summary Southwest Airlines is a competitor in the airline industry who models themselves as a low fare company who cares about people. These two aspects are that backbone to their business. It is what sets them apart from their major competitors, such as Delta/Northwest, Continental/United, JetBlue, and Allegiant. Government regulation has allowed for more travel due to deregulation. This means there are more consumers than ever entering the industry. As more consumers enter the market, more competitors arise to assist that demand. Southwest Airlines has kept their stronghold on the market by continuing to offer their low fares, while not sacrificing their caring attitude towards consumers and employees. Within every industry, there will be threats. In the airline industry, there is the threat of terroristic violence, and technological issues. Also, governmental interference and social acceptance will continue to shape how the industry operates. Southwest Airlines will need to predict and adapt to all possible threats in the industry. Currently Southwest Airlines' strengths in the industry are their ability to keep fares low due to the Airline Deregulation Act of 1978. However, their weaknesses are competitors trying to copy their model. Three alternative strategies are proposed in this analysis, but only one option is deemed possible for success. Gladwell refers to this miscommunication as "mitigated speech", and defines the concept in his article as, "any attempt to downplay or sugarcoat the meaning of what is being said" (276). To clarify, when people pacify the true significance of their words, they change what they initially wanted their words to mean. This prompts Gladwell's belief that the lack of appropriate meaning in the pilot's words caused the severity of the issue to not be fully comprehended by the air traffic workers, which ultimately, lead to the devastating accident. In other words, if the two pilots used words that clearly told the air traffic workers that their lack of fuel was an urgent, dangerous matter, Gladwell feels the crash could have been prevented. ... For example, I would say I use a more mitigated language with my parents the most. Between asking for permission to do an activity or telling them about a bad test grade, I completely downplay the situation to them. It boasts a large global flying network and provides travel to over 170 destinations on 280 aircrafts. Annually it serves 40 million customers making it an accessible, convenient brand, and an Industry leader (British Airways). In comparison to the original brand Virgin Atlantic, British Airways markets itself very differently despite sharing a niche and a market segment. The 4–Ps analysis will be a useful tool in examining these differences further, as well as analysing the major differences to determine how British Airways has distinguished itself from rivals such as Virgin Atlantic. When we analysed Virgin Atlantic we saw that they were putting forward a luxurious brand identity with a price point to match. They are regarded as an expensive and high–service choice for people who are willing to spend a little bit more money in order to have a higher quality of customer service on their flight. This put them in the high–price, high–service quadrant along with many other competitors including British Airways. One of the major factors in airline marketing is that all airlines perform the same task; they take passengers from point A to point B. With eight crew members and 152 passengers the McDonnell Douglas MD–80 departed Tocumen International Airport (PTY) in Panama City, Panama and headed to Martinique Aimé Césaire International Airport (FDF) in Fort–de–France, Martinique, France. After initially climbing to FL310, and subsequently to FL330 to level off, the Captain of the aircraft noticed the engines sounded abnormal. Reacting to sounds of the engines, the Captain began to take corrective actions to correct the problem, by starting a rapid descent as a precaution. The time from the initial radio call from the first officer declaring engine problems to the subsequent crash took only 9:00 minutes. This research paper will delve into the chain of mistakes that were made in order for this terrible accident to have occured. (Which, no date:online) Main points On reviewing the legislation already in place; If the reason for delay doesn't compromise the safety of the passengers then it is unfair for the customer to be paying for a service that they are not receiving and therefore should be compensated for the delay as this delay could have a detrimental effect on the rest of their trip and could cause them to miss events or connections the other side. The introduction of the denied boarding regulation should be seen as an incentive for companies to make their services more efficient. If they achieve this then in turn they would not have to pay out compensation for customers as delayed flights would be much less. Ethics can also be affected due to delayed or cancelled flight. BBC reports of a couple, Robert Evans and Melissa Taylor who passengers of Thomas Cook flight that's had to sleep on the floor, no hotel was offered when their flight got cancelled after being delayed for 9 hours previously.
