Iso 9000 : International Quality Standard
ISO 9000: The International Quality Standard Organizations that manufacture goods and services
are always concerned with the quality of the goods and the strategies for continued improvements.
Improvements in quality are synonymous with increased sales, reduced cost, and increased overall
profitability (Heizer & Render, 2014). Quality has several definitions based on who you ask what
research you do. Heizer and Render (2014) stated that quality falls into three categories, user based,
and manufacturing based, and product based. The quality of a product will directly influence an
organizations reputation, liability, and global implications. For all these reasons, ISO 9000
international quality standards were developed. In this paper, I will introduce ISO 9000 and explain
exactly what this quality management system does. Additionally, I will present the benefits of ISO
9000 and why the standards have been embraced worldwide. Finally, I will discuss the latest updates
to ISO 9000 and explain the principals of the latest revision.
What is ISO 9000? Quality is something all organizations strive for and often times do not achieve.
Problems with efficiency, quality, process, systems, and many more reasons led to the development
of ISO 9000. Almeida, Gunaman, and Nurr (2000) stated that ISO is an international organization
for standards founded by technical committees and ISO 9000 is a set of five international standards
for quality assurance. The standards are broken down

Standardization Of The International Organization For...
ISO: 9000, 186278 Created in 1947, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) hoped
to bring standardization to a chaotic system of manufacturing. To help companies, ISO intends to
help standardize the quality and safety of products bought and sold between two companies, either
domestic or abroad. In fact, Heizer & Render (2014) stated "the move towards global supply chains
has placed so much emphasis on quality that the world has united around a single quality standard,
ISO 9000" (p. 210). To remain the authority, ISO's guiding principles are to ensure quality and
safety starting at the top of management within any given organization all the way through supplier
relationships. ISO's mission to ensure accurate record keeping and detailed documentation started
with the collaboration of 25 countries meeting together.
Who is ISO?
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is an international organization that creates
standards and practices for corporations to adhere to. It primarily gives rules, guidelines and
specifications for quality control issues and safety concerns. It also intends to give efficiency and
normality to those involved in international trade. In fact, ISO has published more than 19000
International Standards. Among the thousands of these standards, one can find documents which
cover nearly all industries, from technology, to food safety, to agriculture and health care (ISO,
2016). In an effort to maintain high quality,

With globalization there are barriers to overcome, those being primarily communication and ideals.
Quality production requires a careful at tentative eye from production workers, at all levels, as well
as a system of checks and balances with quality assurance auditors.
How does globalization increase the complexity of total quality management for this organization?
The increased complexity of total quality management for Riordan lies within the area of
supervision. Employees are held accountable for their production quality, although there are
auditors. The Quality Assurance Auditors perform a limited surveillance with an objective to
provide thorough, comprehensive and effective evaluations of Quality Programs, both domestic and
international. The intricacy involves becoming aware of employees cultures and ideals, and learning
how to utilize these to motivate the different personnel to work to their potential.
Globalization involves, simply put, bringing together people of a diverse background to work
towards the same goal. Quality Management requires these diverse employees to work toward the
same level of quality, conveying the standards of quality the importance of them, and how to
accomplish producing quality products and or services.
Conducting educational programs and ISO 9000 certification programs assist Riordan management
team in Total Quality Management. Management teams work with employees in educational

QUALITY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM IN CONSTRUCTION

ABSTRACT: This paper describes the Quality Management System (QMS) concept and its
application in the construction industry. A misunderstanding among the construction players on the
QMS concept has become the stumbling block for its successful implementation. QMS could be
implemented either at the company level or at the project level. The researches on the company–
based QMS in construction can be considered as comprehensive in view of the various aspects of
implementation have been studied. While many studies have been done on the company–based
QMS, study on the project–based QMS is lagging behind. Notwithstanding the claims that the

Integrated PQP QUALITY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM IN CONSTRUCTION ISO 8402, the
vocabulary of quality defined quality management as "all activities of the overall management
function that determine the quality policy, objectives and responsibilities, and implement them by
means such as quality planning, quality control, quality assurance and quality improvement, within
the quality system". Meanwhile, the definition of quality system according to ISO 8402 is "the
organizational structure, responsibilities, procedures and resources needed to implement quality
management". Combining the definitions of 'quality system' and 'quality management' thus
concludes that QMS is the interaction of people, processes and documentation to meet both
customers' stated and implied needs. The result would be a reduction in inefficiencies and waste,
improved work practices, increased morale and the opportunity for a greater market share. All these
benefits are achieved through the implementation of QMS which ones should perceive it as a wide–
scale failure prevention programme that will lead to costs savings.

Describe how the introduction and implementation of Total Quality Management (TQM) and
ISO9000 may impact on the performance of Pars Food Ltd.
Total Quality Management and ISO 9000 are two very similar processes that overlap each other. A
business will often be doing both in sync with each other because they have so many of the same
key elements and thrive upon so many of the same success factors.
Total Quality Management (TQM) is the theory of continuous improvement that involves all
workers in a business from upper management to production line workers. The focus of the
improvement program is to improve customer service and reduce waste in the business (Kelchner,
2015). There are 8 key elements that TQM is built upon. These 8 elements ... Show more content on

TQM creates a greater financial yield by increasing output and productivity, making more profit
which will please the shareholders and potential investors (Gilani, 2015). TQM is highly renowned
for its strong improvement in customer satisfaction, by making changes and improvements to the
delivery process, consumers will receive their produce quicker. Businesses can reduce warranty 's
and support costs because of the improved quality of the product. There will be a fiscal discipline
through eliminating unnecessary steps, allowing the business to cut costs, and offer lower prices to
the consumer (Nayab, 2011). However there are also a lot of disadvantages some of the costs
associated with TQM are; higher quality is expensive therefore will be noticed in the pricing of
produce which may not be suitable for smaller businesses. Other costs are additional training,
infrastructural improvement costs and maintenance and regular refresher training. TQM is not a
quick fix solution it takes years of planning, dedication, time and resources. Highly competitive
markets and environments don 't have the time for TQM because of the constant need for full
dedication and resources to be spent on maintaining competitiveness, TQM would be seen as too
much of a distraction (Gilani, 2015).

ISO compliance has become the gold standard for businesses. It is like wearing a badge of honor
that proclaims any company that wears it will ensure a minimum level of quality and safety for its
entire product line. Before the onset of ISO, quality between companies was difficult to maintain as
so many companies in different countries had varying degrees of quality control. A million
certificates earned, in 178 countries worldwide, demonstrates the impact of ISO on global trade.
The Benefits of International Standardization? Corporations that wish to become global
manufacturers, such as Boeing or Lockheed Martin, may be wary of quality control and safety
practices of a company it has never done business with. For operations managers, it should be
important to deliver safe and quality products as well as receive the same level of product from
other companies (Heizer & Render, 2014). ISO did not exist pre 1947; therefore, trading between
companies posed a risk of poor quality goods. Without global standardization, one company's
definition of quality may be vastly different than another. The formation of ISO and its
standardization has created a certain level of confidence in global commerce. A company can pledge
its commitment to quality and safety by earning an ISO certification. Consequently, fewer quality
issues will result in increased productivity. According to ISO, it helps companies gain access new

The Value Of Iso 9001 Certification
The value of ISO 9001 certification lies in a combination of learning, incentives, and signaling. ISO
9001 certification process teaches managers how to reduce costs or cost–effectively improve quality.
If ISO 9001 certification increases customers' willingness to pay for quality, which, in turn, is an
incentive for managers to improve product quality. The signaling, like incentives, operates if, in the
absence of ISO 9001, many customers cannot detect (and thus are unwilling to pay for)
improvements in product or service quality. In such cases, certification could be a useful signal that
enables buyers to distinguish higher– from lower quality firms. ISO 9001 can play this signaling
role as long as adoption is more often profitable for firms that already had higher quality. All of
these channels yield higher unit sales and/or higher prices. There is considerable evidence,
moreover, consistent with many industrial buyers use ISO 9001 certification to screen potential
suppliers. (Levine)
Nearly 900,000 organizations in 170 countries have adopted the ISO 9001 Quality Management
System standard, a remarkable figure given the lack of evidence regarding how the standard actually
affects organizational practices and performance. Implementing a quality management that
conforms to ISO 9001 requires companies to document operating procedures, training, internal
auditing, and corrective action procedures. It also requires companies to implement procedures to

What Is Total Quality Management ( Tqm )?
Assignment 1 – IE 530
1) What is Total Quality Management (TQM)?
Total Quality Management (TQM) is an improvement tool that is widely used in many companies. It
consists of many aspects including Managing people as well as business processes in order to
maintain customer satisfaction. With TQM, Businesses starts to do the right thing from the start and
to ensure zero error. Therefore, it is important to learn the principle of TQM and how it acts in
organizations with its advantages and disadvantages.
History
The Technique of quality control and management developed and evolved during the entire
twentieth century. In early 1900s, Fredrick W. Taylor also known as the 'father of scientific
management ' presented the quality concepts. In 1913, JC Penney introduced the fundamentals of
total quality management to the management side of business.
The history of TQM starts with Elton Mayo 's Hawthorne experiments from 1927 to 1932. The
Hawthorne experiments proved that the worker's involvement in manufacturing processes actually
improved the efficiency. In 1930s, the Western Electric Company considered optimum lighting,
work day period and appropriate rests in the Hawthorne plant to maximize productivity. This is
called the Hawthorne effect as the productivity improved as the lighting improved in the plant which
lead to increased output
The post war era saw dramatic progress in the Japanese quality and that happened over a small

Iso 9000 Standards And Standards
Implementing ISO 9000
ISO 9000 has both proponents and critics. Some argue that ISO 9000 would significantly improve
organizations while others argue that it does nothing but take a lot of time and money to implement
and run ISO in an organization. ISO is and independent certification that is responsible for creating
and publishing international standards (Dedhia, p.1). Many business people have heard of ISO but
don't know the requirements. ISO isn't an acronym, it's derived from the Greek word isos, which
means equal (Dedhia, p.1). ISO 9000 first published in 1987 as a series of three standards and
supplementary guidelines, the standards outline the collective plans, responsibilities, procedures and

ISO 9000 could be a benefit to an organization's control function of management if you have the
right people in the organization. People who are committed and involved in running a business the
correct way. However, aspects of the control function of management that will most benefit by the
implementation of ISO 9000, requirements helped most and least by ISO 9000 implementation, and
my opinion on if the benefit outweigh the cost of implementing ISO 9000 into an organization will
be addressed throughout the entirety of this essay.
The pressure for organizations to become ISO 9000 certified is absolutely increasing, to the fact the
corporate customers are requesting ISO 9000 certification to ensure that suppliers are paying
adequate attention to quality ("ISO 9000", p.1). Aspects of the control function of management that
mostly benefit from ISO 9000 are plentiful. In my opinion, being that the ISO 9000 requires a
management that is committed, involved, focused and responsive benefits the control functions of
management in many categories (Dedhia, p.1). With a management that is involved in everyday
operations, setting standards is a must, standards of what should be done and the efficiency of the
organization. Management who is committed and responsive in an organization measure
performances and corrects deviations to continue the success of the organization,

The Standards Of Iso Standards
1. Foreword
Over the last few decades, there has been an increase in companies following a set of recognised
standards to make sure quality standards are maintained across the board. There are different
standards relating to different aspects of running a business. Out of these standards, ISO 9000 series
of standards are recognised some of the best known standards1. There are 4 standards within the
ISO 9000 series; namely the ISO 9001:2008, ISO 9000:2008, ISO 9004:2009, ISO 19011:2011.1
This report will give an overview of the ISO 9001 series of standards which gives a guideline on the
requirements of a quality management system1 and will help this manufacturing company in its
Quality Assurance procedures.
Many organisations across the world claim that certain quality programs, such as the ISO 9001,
improve management practices whilst also improving workers safety and elimination of hazardous
practices5.
2. Origins of IS09000/ISO9001
The origins of ISO standards lie as far back as the 1940's, where the competition between companies
was picking up. In today's competitive market, quality assurance has become one of the most
important aspects in determining which business is able to offer the best products.
ISO was established under the United Nations as an agency in 19472 3. At that time, membership
was small; however, it now exceeds membership from 160 countries3. Over the decades, ISO
standards have increased and cover most aspect of quality assurance in the world today.

ISO 9001 encompass all of the elements listed in ISO 9002 and ISO 9003. This standard contains
twenty clauses that address issues such as management responsibility, process control, and
corrective and preventative actions. These clauses are designed to promote conformity of processes
such as design, production, and servicing by striving towards the goal of total quality management.
ISO 9000–1 addresses quality management and quality assurance standards. This document defines
the primary concept of the series such as principal objectives and responsibilities, the process of an
organization, and the roles of documentation. This document also provides a definition of
terminology and provides guidance needed for all ISO 9000 series issues.
ISO 9004–1 addresses internal procedures such as organizational goals, management
responsibilities, training, and servicing. As in the ISO 9001 series, this series also contains twenty
clauses. This is also the standard, which provides for the most misunderstandings. It is important
that companies completing the certification process understand the relationship of this standard to
the other ISO 9000 family standards. Clauses within the ISO 9004–1 standard provide the
foundation for completing certain ISO 9001 requirements.

What is ISO 9001? ISO 9001 is an international standard that focus on the requirements for a quality

first signs of ISO (International Organization for Standardization) 9001 was back in 1987, this was
the birth time when the quality management standard system (ISO 9001) began after ISO 9000 was

been written about quality management systems and their application in business, industry, and

In 1987, the ISO published a series of global quality system standards called ISO 9000, which are
designed to improve productivity and reduce costs in the marketplace. "The ISO 9000 series intends
to stimulate trade by providing third–party assurance of an organization's ability to meet
specifications and perform negotiated standards" (ibid., p. 65). The focus of ISO 9000 is on the
organization's quality system––its design, development, production, and servicing capacities, not on
product quality. ISO 9000 Registration attests that a company has a "documented quality system that
is full deployed and consistently followed" (ibid.).
Vocational Education Assessment
The reception of any one of these quality awards hinges upon the positive assessment of a
company's quality operations and achievement of continuous improvement, which results in a
certification of excellence. In vocational education, assessment is also a way of determining how
and to what extent quality improvement systems are changing educational practices and outcomes.
Skill standards describe the essential knowledge, skills, and behaviors critical to an occupational
area; assessments measure the achievement of those standards; and certifications result in
credentials that state the standards that have been achieved.

ISO Certification for Riordan Slide 1 EMBED PowerPoint.Slide.8 Slide 2 EMBED
PowerPoint.Slide.8 The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is an internationally
recognized organization which creates and documents specific standards for different processes and
industries and for firms which apply, the organization will assess the performance of the company
and grant certification where the firm is compliant with the published standard (ISO, 2013).
Currently more than 19,500 different standards are published, so it is likely for any firm. Such as
Riordan, there are a number of ISO's which they may consider. Slide 3 EMBED PowerPoint.Slide.8
If a firm wishes to increase quality or overcome operational problems they may undertake this
strategy using ISO documents, as they will layout the standards that are required, and can include
technical requirements and guidance on the optimising of operational efficiency. The process of
working towards an ISO will involve choosing the relevant standard and then assessing the current
performance against that standard to identify shortfalls. This is one of the first stages in almost all
quality improvement processes (Mintzberg et al., 2008). It is notable that when a firm starts to work
towards an ISO, the process of improvement begins, and quality is likely to improve before the
applications for certification, and even if certifications not gained, there may be significant
improvements. Slide 4 EMBED

Effective Control Capacity Of Administration
After strategies are planned and arrangements are made, management 's essential assignment is to
make moves to guarantee that these arrangements are done, or, if conditions warrant, that the
arrangements are adjusted. This is the discriminating control capacity of administration. Also since
administration includes guiding the exercises of others, a real piece of the control capacity are
verifying other individuals do what ought to be done. In numerous circumstances, a control
framework manufactured around estimation and criticism is not attainable. Furthermore actually
when plausibility is not a restriction, utilization of an input situated control framework is frequently
a second rate result. Yet, great controls might be made and kept up utilizing different procedures. In
the event that all work forces dependably did what was best for the association, control and even
administration would not be required (Krajewski, 2007). However, clearly people are once in a
while incapable or unwilling to act in the association 's best investment, and a set of controls must
be actualized to make preparations for undesirable conduct and to empower alluring activities. One
paramount class of issues against which control frameworks guard may be called individual
constraints. Individuals don 't generally comprehend what is anticipated from them or how they can
best perform their employments, as they may fail to offer some imperative capacity, preparing, or
data. What 's more, people have

Importance Of ISO 9000 Identification
Importance of ISO 9000 It is observed that that most of organizations are seeking for ISO
certification , to demonstrate that they value their customers, they value quality. ISO 9000
certification is the best way of measuring progress and it is regarded as the beginning of a
continuous improvement process in the organization. According to Bodinson, G.W. (Bodinson,
1991) , if any organization did not implement ISO 9000, in future , it will be difficult for that
organization to sell their product and survive in the market. According to Van Der Weile , (Van Der

Introduction In order to stay competitive, businesses have to be the best at what they do. Company 's

Planning, training, setting and achieving goals are all key to improvement or success of a business
(Henkoff 5). ISO 9000 makes sure a company is doing what it says it is doing and helps them do it.
However, that doesn 't mean it is running the company and telling it what to do (USAToday 1). The
business is still an independent business it is just getting advice on how to manufacture things and
earning a certificate that is appealing to customers. However, that also doesn 't mean that ISO 9000
promises the quality of a company 's product will be great; Richard Buerow, director of corporate
quality at Motorola states: "With ISO 900 you can still have terrible processes and products. You can
certify a manufacturer that makes life jackets from concrete, as long as those jackets are made
according to the documented procedures and the company provides the next of kin with instructions
on how to complain about defects. That 's absurd (Henkoff 3)." Its steps and procedures will help a
manufacturer 's product become better produced. ISO 9001, 2 & 3 ISO 9000 is divided into three
equally ranked quality systems which a business can chooses by what quality system will cover their
business process (iso online). ISO 9001 is for a business whose processes range from design and
development, to production, installation and servicing. ISO 9002 is for a business that does not carry
out design and development but anything else that is under ISO 9001. ISO

may be ignored under special circumstances are known as exclusions. According to ISO, you may

management responsibility; resource management; product/service realization; and measurement,

General requirements for having a QMS is that the organization shall establish, document,

(a) identify needed processes such as management activities, provision of resources, product or
service realization, and measurement, (b) determine their sequence and interaction, (c) determine
criteria and methods for effective operation and control of these processes, (d) ensure the availability

Pros And Cons Of Situational Leadership
Interesting observation was noticed from both type of scenarios. Both plant possess the situational
leadership style. Even though both plant A and B had similar culture they had different leadership
styles. Both leaders adapt to suit the situation with confidence by dealing with people to different
maturity levels and tasks assigned. One of the attribute of a situational leader is to change from one
leadership style and also understand when to change to meet the goals and needs of the organization
and the employees. Situational leaders should learn to demonstrate certain competencies. When a
situation or crisis exist, these leaders should be able to diagnose and understand the situation they
are trying to control. They should be able to adapt and adjust their behavior in response to what

It is also important for leaders to advance and manage the company movement. From my research, I
can safely say there are some pros and cons with situational leadership. Since it is a leadership that
can adaptive leaders can easily know which style is right and they can evaluate based on the
situation and apply it to the best leadership style to make it comfortable and appropriate which fits
best. One the other side of the spectrum situational leadership style can deviate their focus from
long–term goals and strategies from the organization. I would say though, that it is a beneficial
leadership because it can be hand–picked for the right and most appropriate leadership style for the
right employees. However, Goetsch the author for quality Management for Excellence, made it clear
that "advocates total quality reject situational leadership as an attempt to apply an approach based on

International Standard For Quality Management Systems
Introduction
This document is an overview of the ISO 9001:2008 international standard for quality management
systems developed by the International Organization for Standardization with the intent to give
specific requirements to companies and organizations on methods to enhance customer satisfaction
and meet statutory and regulatory requirements by improving effectiveness and performance of their
quality management systems. The overview will cover the requirement, certification procedures and
benefits of ISO9001 certification.
History
Quality management systems owe their basis to the the military industry. In fact the origins of
ISO9000 series of standards dates back to fifties, during the development of a nuclear submarine in
the US which had issues with contractors causing delays and quality breakdowns. As the result of
the research of that project the foundations of quality management were developed and other
important military standards were born such as NASA 's and British Defence 's quality management
standards. In 1971 the British Standard Institute applied a QMS to electronics industry with the BS
9000 and, later on, in the manufacturing industry in 1979,publishing the BS 5750 from which the
ISO9000 series of standard, published in 1987, is heavily based. After its revision in 1994 the ISO
9000 added separate ISO 9001, 9002 and 9003 standards for different industries becoming the
reference quality management system standard in different nations and

The ISO 9000: 2008 is a family of international quality management standards and guidelines is
used as a basis for establishing efficient and effective quality management systems. Nowadays more
companies are operating in the global market economy, and it has become more important for the
need for standardised international standards. They form a collective of documents developed and
updated for continual improvement and business excellence to meet the needs and expectations of
users and the market. These standards can be used for contractual and certification purposes by

6. Continual Improvement
7. Factual Approach to Decision Making
8. Mutually Beneficial Supplier Relationships.
If ISO accreditation is obtained, it would only benefit the company in furthering its quality
management system to outline the context of the company, its market strategies and business
processes. ISO accreditation has been shown to improve sales volume, customer satisfaction,
corporate image and market share, through improved safety, quality and processes. It also sees the
reduction of costs, because of improved systems and processes, the accessing of new markets
through ensuring the compatibility of products and services, and a reduced impact on the
environment.
To commit to this path the management would develop and implement the quality management
system and thru a continual improvement process, monitor its effectiveness by communicating the
importance of meeting customers as well as statutory and regulatory requirements. They would also
establish a quality policy, establishing quality objectives, reviews and the availability of company
resources.

How Iso Is A System Of International Standards
Key Term and Why You Are Interested in It
ISO is a system of international standards that is serving and supporting many facets of the industry
today. Starting in the manufacturing arena to add standardization to units and measurements as
products move from one country to another in different stages of production, ISO ensures that
dimensions are the same no matter what country the product is manufactured in. This key concept
interested me because I work under ISO 9001:2008 standards daily. Our processes, patient care, and
performance improvements measured by the ISO standards have become ingrained in my

The newest standards are ISO 26000, which standardizes social responsibility, and ISO/IEC 27001,
which is a developed management system to standardize information security (ISO, n.d.). The most
well–known and best–selling standard of the ISO governing body is ISO 9000, which was
developed in 1987 (ISO, n.d.). ISO 9000 is for quality management standards. Quality management
includes standards that help the organization identify processes that can be developed and employ
constant performance improvement. ISO 9000 has been utilized by many national and international
companies to constantly improve performance and processes, but ISO 9000 usually involves a
manufacturing company.

The International Standards Organization ( Iso )
The International Standards Organization (ISO) produces guidelines for organizations to use as a
quality management tool. ISO functions as an independent organization with no governmental ties,
allowing themselves to create guidelines that are not catered more specifically to one country than
another. One hundred and sixty–two national standards bodies make up its membership and they
help supply experts who will share knowledge and develop international standards. These voluntary,
market–relevant, and consensus–based standards are produced as a result of the identification of a
global need and are compiled through the work of international experts working in conjunction with
one another. In 1987, the first version of ISO guidelines was released. It was heavily based on the
older UK Standard BS 5750 with three kinds of quality management systems. An organization
would select one of these systems by evaluating the scope of their activities (The British Assessment
Bureau). ISO 9001:1987 Model for quality assurance in design, development, productions,
installation, and servicing was developed for companies and organizations who dealt with creating
new products. The 9002 version, Model for quality assurance in production, installation, and
servicing was nearly identical to ISO 9001 with the exception of not dealing with new product
creation. ISO 9003:1987 Model for quality assurance in final inspection and test only detailed the

The first set of standards was published in 1987, and the first revision appeared in 1994. And now
the latest updated version in 2000. These new standards are referred to as the "ISO 9000 2000
Standards". ISO 9000 currently includes three quality standards: ISO 9000:2000 (fundamentals and
vocabulary), ISO 9001:2000 (requirements), and ISO 9004:2000 (guidelines).
When you compare ISO 9001:1994 and ISO 9001:2000 you'll notice a lot of different changes that
have been undergone. ISO has abandoned the 20–clause structure of the old standard. Instead of 20
sections, the new standard now has 5 sections. ISO reorganized the ISO 9001 standard in order to
create a more logical structure, and in order to make it more compatible with the ISO 14001
environmental management standard. ISO 9001:2000 is more customer–oriented than the old
standard. While the old standard was also oriented towards meeting customer requirements and
achieving customer satisfaction, the new standard addresses this in much greater detail. In addition,
it expects you to communicate with customers and to measure and monitor customer satisfaction. In
the past, organizations that wished to be certified were referred to as "suppliers" because they
supplied products and services to customers. Since many people were confused by this usage, ISO
standards focus on the "organization," not the

related to a product.
ISO 9000 series are based on eight quality management principles.
The eight quality management principles are defined in ISO 9000:2005, Quality management
systems – Fundamentals and vocabulary, and in ISO 9004:2009, Managing for the sustained success
of an organization – A quality management approach.
Principle 1 – Customer focus

Principle 6 – Continual improvement
Continual improvement of the organization's overall performance should be a permanent objective
of the organization.
Principle 7 – Factual approach to decision making
Effective decisions are based on the analysis of data and information.
Principle 8 – Mutually beneficial supplier relationships
An organization and its suppliers are interdependent and a mutually beneficial relationship enhances
the ability of both to create value.
The Ford Motor Co, founded in 1903, designs, develops, manufactures, and services cars and trucks
across six continents under the Ford and Lincoln brand names.
Ford Motor Co., an example which every manufacturer had been following for their quality
improvement practices before the introduction of ISO quality systems, they were the one to
introduce revolutionary new products and used TQM to drive down the cost.
Due to the number of customer complaints, it then was ranked last among the other automakers.
Due to this they redefined the way it approached its business, instead of being a manufacturing
company it is they wanted to be known for a consumer product company.
This is when they used Six Sigma to achieve their vision. They utilized many tools of TQM, QS

Lean Thinking and Six Sigma
1.1 Lean Thinking: Lean Thinking is an improvement approach to improve flow and eliminate waste
that was first introduced in 1987. At the beginning, Lean describes production methods and product
development, when compare to traditional mass production processes, which produce more with
higher quality and in a short time. The Lean's goal is to develop a way to specify value, line up value
to create value in the best sequences, conduct these activities without interruption and perform them
more effectively (Womack and Jones 2013). Lean Thinking helps the removal of waste and anything
unnecessary to produce the product or service. Lean methodology is a "back to basics" approach that
places the needs of customers first through five steps: 1. Define value as determined by the
customer, identified by the provider's ability to deliver the right product or service at an appropriate
price. 2. Identify the value stream: the set of specific actions required to bring a specific product or
service from concept to completion. 3. Make value–added steps flow from beginning to end. 4. Let
the customer pull the product from the supplier, rather than push products. 5. Pursue perfection of
the process. In order to meet today's healthcare system's needs, Lean Thinking was introduced in to
healthcare to deal with less staff exertion, less technology, less time, and less workspace while
providing patients, physicians, nurses, and administrators with a high level of service, and

Implementation Of A Large Quality Management System
Munson Healthcare includes nine owned or affiliated hospitals with more than 7,000 employees. It
provides services to patients from 30 counties in Michigan spread through the northern half of the
Lower Peninsula as well as the eastern half of the Upper Peninsula. As part of the organization's
True North initiative, the patient is central to all processes. In this large and varied organization,
implementation of a large quality management system will help ensure that we meet this goal.
The International Organization for Standardization developed a series of written quality standards
(Evans, 2014). The purpose was to standardize quality requirements between European countries in
the common market and countries wanting to do business with them (Evans, 2014). This paper will
review the ISO 9000 standards, the benefits of implementing an ISO–compliant quality management
system (QMS), and describe challenges to the successful implementation of such a program in a
hospital system.

Quality Improvement Practices Within Organizations
Quality Improvement Practices
Quality management is a structured approach to organizational management that seeks to improve
the quality of products and services through continual refinements in response to continuous
feedback (Gharakhani, 2013). Thus, it necessitates the consistent application of the appropriate
human and technical processes, tools and techniques. A strategic quality strategy will be effective
only through long–term commitment and dedicated application by executive management and all
employees (Gharakhani, 2013). The purpose of this paper is to converse on implementing successful
quality improvement practices within organizations to help achieve viable quality management.
Further, this paper also highlights the conditions that must be in place such as management
commitment, employee involvement, communication, and continuous improvement for successful
quality management to be aligned with ISO 9000.
Management Commitment and Leadership
Predominantly big and small organizations in society that practice quality management are assigned
to oversee the process to ensure that everyone is on board in every department. For quality
management to be fruitful, it is critical that all employees in every department understand the need
for quality and that changes and improvement are part of the process (Management, 2015).
Furthermore, it is essential for management to exhibit support for these changes, and show that
support when communicating and interacting with staff

Kellogg's History : Kellogg Brand
Kellogg's history Kellogg is a company that has been around for over 100 years. William Kellogg
and his brother Dr, John Harvey, started the company in 1868. In 1898 they were able to create the
first flake created from toasted maize and in 1902 they were able to create a cereal with a longer
shelf life. The company started out really small, they only accepted orders through mail and they
sold primarily to people they were affiliated with. They eventually came up with the idea to brand
themselves and they posted ads in newspapers and on billboards; this was the time that people
started to recognize them as competition; in 1900 more than forty cereal companies were in
competition with the Kellogg brand. John Harvey had a really big idea in mind when coming up
with the Kellogg brand. Mr. Harvey was not a strong business man in fact he did not care about the
business aspect at all, but instead he focused on a way to reform the way Americans ate, he came up
with a way to make the cereal rich in nutrients. On the other hand his brother, W.K Kellogg, was
completely focused on the business aspect. This led him to found the Battle Creek Toasted
Cornflake Company in 1906; at this time he also purchased the rights to the cornflake. The
difference between the two brothers is what most would have thought made the company work so
well. The two partners eventually had a falling out over the name of the company and W.K took
John Harvey to court where he won the law suit to be able to

  • 5. Iso 9000 : International Quality Standard ISO 9000: The International Quality Standard Organizations that manufacture goods and services are always concerned with the quality of the goods and the strategies for continued improvements. Improvements in quality are synonymous with increased sales, reduced cost, and increased overall profitability (Heizer & Render, 2014). Quality has several definitions based on who you ask what research you do. Heizer and Render (2014) stated that quality falls into three categories, user based, and manufacturing based, and product based. The quality of a product will directly influence an organizations reputation, liability, and global implications. For all these reasons, ISO 9000 international quality standards were developed. In this paper, I will introduce ISO 9000 and explain exactly what this quality management system does. Additionally, I will present the benefits of ISO 9000 and why the standards have been embraced worldwide. Finally, I will discuss the latest updates to ISO 9000 and explain the principals of the latest revision. What is ISO 9000? Quality is something all organizations strive for and often times do not achieve. Problems with efficiency, quality, process, systems, and many more reasons led to the development of ISO 9000. Almeida, Gunaman, and Nurr (2000) stated that ISO is an international organization for standards founded by technical committees and ISO 9000 is a set of five international standards for quality assurance. • 7. Standardization Of The International Organization For... ISO: 9000, 186278 Created in 1947, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) hoped to bring standardization to a chaotic system of manufacturing. To help companies, ISO intends to help standardize the quality and safety of products bought and sold between two companies, either domestic or abroad. In fact, Heizer & Render (2014) stated "the move towards global supply chains has placed so much emphasis on quality that the world has united around a single quality standard, ISO 9000" (p. 210). To remain the authority, ISO's guiding principles are to ensure quality and safety starting at the top of management within any given organization all the way through supplier relationships. ISO's mission to ensure accurate record keeping and detailed documentation started with the collaboration of 25 countries meeting together. Who is ISO? The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is an international organization that creates standards and practices for corporations to adhere to. It primarily gives rules, guidelines and specifications for quality control issues and safety concerns. It also intends to give efficiency and normality to those involved in international trade. In fact, ISO has published more than 19000 International Standards. Among the thousands of these standards, one can find documents which cover nearly all industries, from technology, to food safety, to agriculture and health care (ISO, 2016). With globalization there are barriers to overcome, those being primarily communication and ideals. Quality production requires a careful at tentative eye from production workers, at all levels, as well as a system of checks and balances with quality assurance auditors. How does globalization increase the complexity of total quality management for this organization? The increased complexity of total quality management for Riordan lies within the area of supervision. Employees are held accountable for their production quality, although there are auditors. The Quality Assurance Auditors perform a limited surveillance with an objective to provide thorough, comprehensive and effective evaluations of Quality Programs, both domestic and international. The intricacy involves becoming aware of employees cultures and ideals, and learning how to utilize these to motivate the different personnel to work to their potential. Globalization involves, simply put, bringing together people of a diverse background to work towards the same goal. Quality Management requires these diverse employees to work toward the same level of quality, conveying the standards of quality the importance of them, and how to accomplish producing quality products and or services. Quality Management System QUALITY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM IN CONSTRUCTION 1 ABSTRACT: This paper describes the Quality Management System (QMS) concept and its application in the construction industry. A misunderstanding among the construction players on the QMS concept has become the stumbling block for its successful implementation. QMS could be implemented either at the company level or at the project level. The researches on the company– based QMS in construction can be considered as comprehensive in view of the various aspects of implementation have been studied. While many studies have been done on the company–based QMS, study on the project–based QMS is lagging behind. Integrated PQP QUALITY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM IN CONSTRUCTION ISO 8402, the vocabulary of quality defined quality management as "all activities of the overall management function that determine the quality policy, objectives and responsibilities, and implement them by means such as quality planning, quality control, quality assurance and quality improvement, within the quality system". Meanwhile, the definition of quality system according to ISO 8402 is "the organizational structure, responsibilities, procedures and resources needed to implement quality management". Combining the definitions of 'quality system' and 'quality management' thus concludes that QMS is the interaction of people, processes and documentation to meet both customers' stated and implied needs. The result would be a reduction in inefficiencies and waste, improved work practices, increased morale and the opportunity for a greater market share. All these benefits are achieved through the implementation of QMS which ones should perceive it as a wide– scale failure prevention programme that will lead to costs savings. 3. 3.1 Company Based QMS The industry had lived in the quality programme of inspection and quality control for years. Construction materials and construction works were accepted or rejected base on the inspection and quality control. However, the –1–

Describe how the introduction and implementation of Total Quality Management (TQM) and ISO9000 may impact on the performance of Pars Food Ltd. Total Quality Management and ISO 9000 are two very similar processes that overlap each other. A business will often be doing both in sync with each other because they have so many of the same key elements and thrive upon so many of the same success factors. Total Quality Management (TQM) is the theory of continuous improvement that involves all workers in a business from upper management to production line workers. The focus of the improvement program is to improve customer service and reduce waste in the business (Kelchner, 2015). There are 8 key elements that TQM is built upon. These 8 elements ... TQM is highly renowned for its strong improvement in customer satisfaction, by making changes and improvements to the delivery process, consumers will receive their produce quicker. Businesses can reduce warranty 's and support costs because of the improved quality of the product. There will be a fiscal discipline through eliminating unnecessary steps, allowing the business to cut costs, and offer lower prices to the consumer (Nayab, 2011). However there are also a lot of disadvantages some of the costs associated with TQM are; higher quality is expensive therefore will be noticed in the pricing of produce which may not be suitable for smaller businesses. Other costs are additional training, infrastructural improvement costs and maintenance and regular refresher training. TQM is not a quick fix solution it takes years of planning, dedication, time and resources. Highly competitive markets and environments don 't have the time for TQM because of the constant need for full dedication and resources to be spent on maintaining competitiveness, TQM would be seen as too much of a distraction (Gilani, 2015). ISO Created in 1947, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) hoped to bring standardization to a chaotic system of manufacturing. ISO intends to help standardize the quality and safety of products bought and sold between two companies, either domestic or abroad. In fact, Heizer & Render (2014) stated "the move towards global supply chains has placed so much emphasis on quality that the world has united around a single quality standard, ISO 9000" (p. 210). ISO compliance has become the gold standard for businesses. It is like wearing a badge of honor that proclaims any company that wears it will ensure a minimum level of quality and safety for its entire product line. Before the onset of ISO, quality between companies was difficult to maintain as so many companies in different countries had varying degrees of quality control. A million certificates earned, in 178 countries worldwide, demonstrates the impact of ISO on global trade. The Benefits of International Standardization? Corporations that wish to become global manufacturers, such as Boeing or Lockheed Martin, may be wary of quality control and safety practices of a company it has never done business with. For operations managers, it should be important to deliver safe and quality products as well as receive the same level of product from other companies (Heizer & Render, 2014). ISO did not exist pre 1947; therefore, trading between companies posed a risk of poor quality goods. Without global standardization, one company's definition of quality may be vastly different than another. The formation of ISO and its standardization has created a certain level of confidence in global commerce. A company can pledge its commitment to quality and safety by earning an ISO certification. Consequently, fewer quality issues will result in increased productivity. According to ISO, it helps companies gain access new markets, level the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 18. The Value Of Iso 9001 Certification The value of ISO 9001 certification lies in a combination of learning, incentives, and signaling. ISO 9001 certification process teaches managers how to reduce costs or cost–effectively improve quality. If ISO 9001 certification increases customers' willingness to pay for quality, which, in turn, is an incentive for managers to improve product quality. The signaling, like incentives, operates if, in the absence of ISO 9001, many customers cannot detect (and thus are unwilling to pay for) improvements in product or service quality. In such cases, certification could be a useful signal that enables buyers to distinguish higher– from lower quality firms. ISO 9001 can play this signaling role as long as adoption is more often profitable for firms that already had higher quality. All of these channels yield higher unit sales and/or higher prices. There is considerable evidence, moreover, consistent with many industrial buyers use ISO 9001 certification to screen potential suppliers. (Levine) Nearly 900,000 organizations in 170 countries have adopted the ISO 9001 Quality Management System standard, a remarkable figure given the lack of evidence regarding how the standard actually affects organizational practices and performance. Implementing a quality management that conforms to ISO 9001 requires companies to document operating procedures, training, internal auditing, and corrective action procedures. In addition, organizations that manufacture goods and services are always concerned with the quality of the goods and the strategies involved for continued improvements. Heizer and Render (2014) stated that improvements in quality are synonymous with increased sales, reduced costs, and increased overall profitability and that quality falls into three categories, user based, and manufacturing based, and product based. The quality of a product will directly influence an organizations reputation, liability, and global implications. For all these reasons, ISO 9000 international quality standards were developed. ISO 9000 makes sure a company is doing what it says it is doing and helps them do it. However, that doesn 't mean it is running the company and telling it what to do (USAToday 1). The business is still an independent business it is just getting advice on how to manufacture things and earning a certificate that is appealing to customers. However, that also doesn 't mean that ISO 9000 promises the quality of a company 's product will be great; Richard Buerow, director of corporate quality at Motorola states: "With ISO 900 you can still have terrible processes and products. You can certify a manufacturer that makes life jackets from concrete, as long as those jackets are made according to the documented procedures and the company provides the next of kin with instructions on how to complain about defects. That 's absurd (Henkoff 3)." Its steps and procedures will help a manufacturer 's product become better produced. ISO 9001, 2 & 3 ISO 9000 is divided into three equally ranked quality systems which a business can chooses by what quality system will cover their business process (iso online). Even though both plant A and B had similar culture they had different leadership styles. Both leaders adapt to suit the situation with confidence by dealing with people to different maturity levels and tasks assigned. One of the attribute of a situational leader is to change from one leadership style and also understand when to change to meet the goals and needs of the organization and the employees. Situational leaders should learn to demonstrate certain competencies. One the other side of the spectrum situational leadership style can deviate their focus from long–term goals and strategies from the organization. International Standard For Quality Management Systems Introduction This document is an overview of the ISO 9001:2008 international standard for quality management systems developed by the International Organization for Standardization with the intent to give specific requirements to companies and organizations on methods to enhance customer satisfaction and meet statutory and regulatory requirements by improving effectiveness and performance of their quality management systems. The overview will cover the requirement, certification procedures and benefits of ISO9001 certification. History Quality management systems owe their basis to the the military industry. In fact the origins of ISO9000 series of standards dates back to fifties, during the development of a nuclear submarine in the US which had issues with contractors causing delays and quality breakdowns. As the result of the research of that project the foundations of quality management were developed and other important military standards were born such as NASA 's and British Defence 's quality management standards. In 1971 the British Standard Institute applied a QMS to electronics industry with the BS 9000 and, later on, in the manufacturing industry in 1979,publishing the BS 5750 from which the ISO9000 series of standard, published in 1987, is heavily based. After its revision in 1994 the ISO 9000 added separate ISO 9001, 9002 and 9003 standards for different industries becoming the reference quality management system standard in different nations and ... • 67. The International Standards Organization ( Iso ) The International Standards Organization (ISO) produces guidelines for organizations to use as a quality management tool. ISO functions as an independent organization with no governmental ties, allowing themselves to create guidelines that are not catered more specifically to one country than another. One hundred and sixty–two national standards bodies make up its membership and they help supply experts who will share knowledge and develop international standards. These voluntary, market–relevant, and consensus–based standards are produced as a result of the identification of a global need and are compiled through the work of international experts working in conjunction with one another. In 1987, the first version of ISO guidelines was released. It was heavily based on the older UK Standard BS 5750 with three kinds of quality management systems. An organization would select one of these systems by evaluating the scope of their activities (The British Assessment Bureau). ISO 9001:1987 Model for quality assurance in design, development, productions, installation, and servicing was developed for companies and organizations who dealt with creating new products. The 9002 version, Model for quality assurance in production, installation, and servicing was nearly identical to ISO 9001 with the exception of not dealing with new product creation. ISO 9000 currently includes three quality standards: ISO 9000:2000 (fundamentals and vocabulary), ISO 9001:2000 (requirements), and ISO 9004:2000 (guidelines). When you compare ISO 9001:1994 and ISO 9001:2000 you'll notice a lot of different changes that have been undergone. ISO has abandoned the 20–clause structure of the old standard. Instead of 20 sections, the new standard now has 5 sections. ISO reorganized the ISO 9001 standard in order to create a more logical structure, and in order to make it more compatible with the ISO 14001 environmental management standard. ISO 9001:2000 is more customer–oriented than the old standard. While the old standard was also oriented towards meeting customer requirements and achieving customer satisfaction, the new standard addresses this in much greater detail. In addition, it expects you to communicate with customers and to measure and monitor customer satisfaction. Ford Motor Co., an example which every manufacturer had been following for their quality improvement practices before the introduction of ISO quality systems, they were the one to introduce revolutionary new products and used TQM to drive down the cost. Due to the number of customer complaints, it then was ranked last among the other automakers. Due to this they redefined the way it approached its business, instead of being a manufacturing company it is they wanted to be known for a consumer product company. This is when they used Six Sigma to achieve their vision. They utilized many tools of TQM, QS 9000 and other quality initiatives. They implemented Six Sigma throughout the whole company. At the beginning, Lean describes production methods and product development, when compare to traditional mass production processes, which produce more with higher quality and in a short time. The Lean's goal is to develop a way to specify value, line up value to create value in the best sequences, conduct these activities without interruption and perform them more effectively (Womack and Jones 2013). Lean Thinking helps the removal of waste and anything unnecessary to produce the product or service. Lean methodology is a "back to basics" approach that places the needs of customers first through five steps: 1. Define value as determined by the customer, identified by the provider's ability to deliver the right product or service at an appropriate price. 2. Identify the value stream: the set of specific actions required to bring a specific product or service from concept to completion. 3. Make value–added steps flow from beginning to end. 4. Let the customer pull the product from the supplier, rather than push products. 5. Pursue perfection of the process. In order to meet today's healthcare system's needs, Lean Thinking was introduced in to healthcare to deal with less staff exertion, less technology, less time, and less workspace while providing patients, physicians, nurses, and administrators with a high level of service, and implementing ... To qualify, a firm had to detail in writing the procedure for making their product, the procedure had to be analyzed by the Ministry of Defense, and then guarantee that the employees adhered to the guidelines. The notion of quality pledge branched out further than the military and the British Government in 1966 created a campaign of reliability and quality. In 1898 they were able to create the first flake created from toasted maize and in 1902 they were able to create a cereal with a longer shelf life. The company started out really small, they only accepted orders through mail and they sold primarily to people they were affiliated with. They eventually came up with the idea to brand themselves and they posted ads in newspapers and on billboards; this was the time that people started to recognize them as competition; in 1900 more than forty cereal companies were in competition with the Kellogg brand. John Harvey had a really big idea in mind when coming up with the Kellogg brand. Mr. Harvey was not a strong business man in fact he did not care about the business aspect at all, but instead he focused on a way to reform the way Americans ate, he came up with a way to make the cereal rich in nutrients. On the other hand his brother, W.K Kellogg, was completely focused on the business aspect. This led him to found the Battle Creek Toasted Cornflake Company in 1906; at this time he also purchased the rights to the cornflake.
