1. The final productthat I createdwas the magazine reviewformy
short film.Afterdoingsome research,looking atexistingfilm
reviews.One conventionIfound,inthe twomainBritishfilm
reviewwasthattheybothhad a main image oneveryreview
that alwayscontainedatleastone of the maincharacter/actor.
Withinmine Idecidedtohave bothof my maincharacters within
the image to showtheirrelationshipwithinthe movie,tooreal
tell the audience thatthismovie isaboutconflict,akey
conventioninsome genre of movie like action,whichmyfilmis.
My researchalsotoldme that on a movie review the imageis
alsowaysa freeze frame fromthe movie notastage shot like on
the poster.So I decide totake the freeze frame fromthe endof
my movie anduse itas my image formy movie asit real shows
the relationshipandthe conflictinthe movie ashe'sholdinga
gun to hishead.
OtherkeyconventionsthatIdiscoveredwhichare keytoany
filmreview istohave averdict,creditinformationandstar
ratingsystem.Ilocatedthe verdictin the Bottom rightside of
the page sothat it isthat lastthingtheyread,as we read
fromtop lefttobottomright,thismeanstheyshouldreadthe
restof the review.Italsofollowsreviewconvention,you
nevergive yourverdictfirst. Ithendecidedtoputthe credit
informationbelowthe verdictsothat the keyinformation
was still presentwithinthe reviewbutdidn'tdrawto much
focusaway fromthe review.
FinallyIlocatedthe starrating system
belowthe title of the movie asitis
conventionbutalsotoinstantlytell
the readerhowgood the filmisbut
alsoto indicate tothemwhatthe
reviewwithfocuson,tellingthem
mostlypositive thingsornegative
thingsaboutthe film.Italsomeansit
isnear the middle of the page,soif
the audience memberisskimming
the magazine theymightsee itoutof
the corner of theireye.
I had to lookindepthat the textof the
reviewstofindkeyconventionwithinthe
text.I foundthatnextto a character’s
name theywouldhave the actors name in
brackets.ThisissomethingIcopiedwithin
my texttomake sure audience knew who
was playingeachcharacter.I alsofound
that whenevertheymentionedamovies
name theywouldalwaysputitin italics,
so that itwouldstandout above the
regulartext,sotheyclearnow whatthe
movie iscalled.
A mainconventionamongstmagazine reviewpagesbutalsoany
magazine isto have the maintextinblackfont ona white
backgroundto make iteasyto read as these twocolourdon't
blendwitheachother.Idevelopedthisconventionbyextending
the white backgroundontothe image sothat the black text
wouldnotgetblendedinwiththe image.
One of the keymagazinesIlookedatwas'total film'withintheir
magazine theyusedacurve to predictthe audience interestat
certainpointsinthe movie.Idecidedtocopythisideaand
conventionfromthismagazine withinmyown,asI foundita
reallygoodwayto informthe audience whichpointsinthe
movie theyshouldlookoutforif the review hadpersuadedthem
to go and see the movie.
I decidedtochallenge one of the key
conventionof afilmreview,afilmreview
alwaysusesthe house style of the magazine
not the movie.Idecidedtobreakthis
conventionanduse the house style frontof
my movie withthe title of the movie onthe
review.Sothatthe audience wouldinstantly
recognise thatthisisfor myfilmandalso
may remindthemif the posterif theyhad
seenitbefore.
