Question 3 of Evaluation
1. What have you learned from your
audience feedback?
To get feedback on my film I put a message on Facebook asking for any constructive criticism. From
analysing all the comments I have received for my short Film, there has been a lot of positive reviews
and only a few negative ones. One of the negative comments I received, didn't think the fight scene
was believable enough. This person was not in my target audience so I chose to ignore this comment
as people inside my target audience were extremely positive about it and didn't focus on any one
thing that could have improved it. This tells me that I had pleased my target audience with the fight
scene, however my editing of the fight scene did receive some constructive criticism suggesting that
it could have been edited together at a faster pace and having more shots within the sequence to
make it more intense. I have taken this criticism on board and will consider trying it in any future
films that I make. The overall feedback for my film was positive enough from my target audience to
feel confident that any changes made at this stage would not benefit the film so I chose to leave the
film as it is. It is difficult to please everyone as people have their own opinions as to what makes a
good film but because of the positive comments outweighing the negative I feel I have made the
right decision.
2. One of the things that I was very interested to find out from my audience feedback was their
thoughts on my visual effects, one of my longest process of construction. The visual effect which
took up most of my time to perfect was the effect of a bullet hitting a tree after it had been fired at
Billy’s character. It was pointed out to me by my friend Edward that by just putting a bullet hole in
the trunk of the tree was not realistic enough and that it looked like the bullet had gone straight
through which was not the effect I was looking for and how I wanted the
audience to perceive the effect, so after many hours of trying other effects I
finally came up with the idea of just having the effect of debris flying off the
tree which after receiving positive feedback had proved more realistic so I
removed the edit of the bullet hole and changed it to the effect of a bullet
ricocheting off the tree. Without audience feedback I would not have
developed this visual effect and I would have been disappointed to realise that
the effect I had used initially did not work when I had released the film.
Audience feedback is important to help in the process of improving and
perfecting techniques to enhance and produce a better end product.
Audience feedback has been key throughout the planning and construction stage of making my
media products. I feel getting audience feedback has helped me to create professional looking
products. It was due to audience feedback that I decided to use Photoshop to create my poster, as I
had intended on using Publisher but feedback on my first draft told me the fonts looked too
amateurish so I changed to Photoshop to be able to download professional looking fonts. Since
making this fundamental change I think it has enhanced the final product which has been confirmed
by the positive feedback I have received.
There were several comments made about the
transition of the music at the beginning of the film
leading into the action scenes. It was suggested
that it was not smooth enough and the whole
effect was spoiled so I took their comments on
board and changed it by taking away one of the
tracks and just had one piece of music playing
throughout. This proved more successful to the
overall effect as it made it more fluid.
It was suggested that the ending of the film could
be changed from the freeze frame of Jason
pointing the gun at Alex’s head to a more abrupt
ending by going straight to black but I felt that this
was not a suitable way to end my film as it took
away the element of suspense and intrigue, the
idea of whether or not Jason actually carried out
the final deed of avenging his wife or sticking to
his belief that killing is not the answer to all the
violence in the world. In this instance feedback helped me to formulate my ideas and to trust in my
own judgement and to stick to my original ending.
3. By listening and accepting positive and negative feedback it has helped me to discover and learn
different ways to construct a film and to improve my skills covering a wide selection of techniques
from editing, perfecting different camera shots, choosing locations, background music, incorporating
sound effects right through to designing the finished product.
Overall the feedback has been positive for my film and ancillary tasks and by listening to the various
comments I have been able to scrutinise my own work to see where improvements can be made and
to trust my own judgement when I feel that I have achieved the result I was looking for.
