3. POSTER ANALYSIS
• Marvel released a lot of teaser posters building up to the release of Civil
War. This was to keep the audience interested and tease them. The
first official poster released is of Cap America and Iron Man’s teams
having a face off. The colour scheme on the posters has Cap’s traditional
red, white and blue to make you remember that it is still his film. The
red side is on Iron Man’s half of the poster to represent his red armour
and what each member is on. The caption on the poster ‘Divided We
Fall’ is used to tell the audience that at the end of the film they wont be
united anymore, they will have broken apart.
• The fans will know that this is the last in the Captain America trilogy
before Avengers Infinity War so there is a lot of anxiety to find out what
happens between them to make them fight against each other instead
of with each other. The poster itself doesn’t reveal too much about the
film but from the main image and caption you can piece together that
they are going to fight, hence the title ‘Civil War’.
4. TEASER TRAILER
• The teaser trailer comes out before the full theatrical trailer to
give people a taste of what is to come. The teaser shows you
snippets of the film and makes you feel anxious waiting for the
full trailer. In this trailer it starts of with Captain America being
reunited with Bucky, picking up where the last film left off. This
gives the audience more information building up to the full trailer.
In the background constantly is a crowd saying ‘United we stand,
divided we fall’. Whilst that is playing you are shown scenes of the
avengers fighting, being badly hurt, explosions everywhere and
horrified looks on their faces. You don’t see any characters in the
trailer except them so this tells you the film is all about them. Cap
America and Winter Soldier are seen the most in the trailer
because they are the main focus of the film. Towards the end
there is a scene that shows Cap and Bucky aiming at Iron Man
and he says ‘You chose the wrong side’. The theme of choosing
sides is the main theme of the film and the trailer. You don’t know
the reason they are fighting by looking at the teaser so it makes
you want to know more.
5. OFFICIAL TRAILER
• The official trailer is released a couple
months after the teaser trailer. This is to
finally give the audience what they want
after seeing the teaser and wanting to
know more. The official trailer is released
a few months before release and allows
more trailers and promotion campaigns
to be done before the film comes out. The
trailer is released on YouTube for the
reviews and comments it gets can tell the
producers whether it is good or not.
6. MAGAZINE
Advertising on film magazines is a big part of film promotion
because the people that read those particular mags are being
film fans. They like to find out about upcoming films and
general film news. The front cover of those film magazines
will usually have a picture of the main characters from the
next big film to come out. For example on this magazine
cover you see Cap and Iron Man fighting with the big caption
in white ‘ IT’S WAR!’. That caption relates to the film title
and also the feeling between the two characters between that
moment on the cover. Having that front cover helps marvel
reach their target audience because big superhero and film
fans will see that and take notice. The red on the cover
connotes death, blood and danger which happens during a
war and the white connotes innocence and purity meaning
someone in the film believes they are innocent but gets hurt
in some way.
7. OTHER PROMOTION METHODS
• Interviews- The main stars of the film can do interviews about the film to help
promote it and give more insight about the film. The allows the audience to see what
the actors have to say about the film and it might sway their judgement about
whether to see it or not.
• TV Adverts- TV adverts are a good way of promoting because they allow you reach
audiences all around the world. Everyone watches TV so when they are watching it
with their friends and family it can make more than one person want to watch it. It
wouldn’t cost a lot of money for Marvel since they have a lot of it so it is a cost
effective way of promoting.
