Masculinity Essay
Part A: Bronies and the Social Construction of Masculinity According to Connell, there are four
masculinities present in our society: hegemonic, complicit, marginalized, and subordinate.
Hegemonic masculinity is the dominant form of masculinity in society. It is culturally valued as the
most type of masculinity. Connell states that the qualities of hegemonic masculinity include
heterosexuality, whiteness, physical strength, and suppression of emotions. When men do not fit the
characteristics of hegemonic masculinity but they do not challenge it means they belong to the
complicit masculinity category. These men often admire the characteristics of hegemonic
masculinity. Marginalized masculinity is when men cannot fit into the hegemonic ... Show more

Bronies experience gender policing by family, friends, and the media. "Gender policing is the
responses to the violation of gender rules aimed at promoting conformity (Wade 355)." In the film
Bronies: The Extremely Unexpected Adult Fans of My Little Pony, some Bronies could tell their
stories about telling their friends and family and how other peers viewed them when they came out
as a Brony. Lyle told his story about his Brony journey. One–day Lyle asked his mother what she
would think if he liked the show My Little Pony, and she said she would be worried about him so he
played it off as a joke. He felt his own mother would not accept the fact that he liked the show. He
did not want his father to ever find out because he did not want his dad to think he was gay or a
man–child. He did not want his parents to view him differently all because he liked a show aimed
for younger girls. Alex was another guy from the video sharing his story. Alex lives in a place where
a people believe that if a guy is not masculine that means they are homosexual. Alex was bullied at a
gas station because he had pony decals on his car. The guy who bullied Alex about his car smashed
his back window where the decals were at. Then the guy "playfully" pointed a gun at Alex and told
him to stop with the gay girly shit. The media only criticizes Bronies by calling them weird, gay,
creepy, pedophiles, disgusting, feminine, etc. Bronies face

Masculinity In Entourage
A hegemonic reading is also useful in examination of the masculine ideologies portrayed in
Entourage. However, rather than reinforcing the traditional view of the hegemonic male, the
characters of Entourage go against the grain to introduce different ideologies of masculinity as it is
socially understood. Historically, the traditional male–male relationships have adhered to the
traditional formula of masculinity, defined by men who strived for sexual conquests and sought
power within social hierarchy while remaining emotionally inexpressive. While these are all
ideologies of homosocial relations and are present in some aspects of Entourage, the relationships
between the characters of Entourage represent a new type of masculinity all together. ... Show more

The strong homosocial bonds between the men are what facilitates and reinforces the power
structure of masculinities in Entourage. The series does not focus only on the movie star Vince but is
instead carried on the relationship between Vince and his friends: manager and best friend "E"; his
older and unsuccessful actor brother, Johnny "Drama" Chase; the devoted driver and weed carrier
"Turtle"; and overtly masculine agent, Ari Gold. The show is about the core group. Vince himself
reiterates that he goes as the group goes. That is, he refers to "our life" not his. The characters in
Entourage hold a much stronger bond than a traditional 'entourage' or same sex friendships. The four
main characters of the series have know each other since they were kids and have since formed an
extremely close bond similar to that of a brotherhood. An examination of the relationship between
these characters brings the emergence of a new form of masculinity that is welcomed by viewers.
The show does not reject the former ideology of the hegemonic male who revolves around power as
embodied by Ari Gold, Vince's aggressive and disrespectful agent who employs dominance over
women. Rather, it

The Bridge Masculinity
Masculinity is a key motif of a view from the bridge, throughout the play Miller explores
masculinity in varying ways. Ideas of masculinity are explored by the variations of masculinity in
the play, how masculinity is challenged and how masculinity leads Eddie to react in different ways.
The majority of the character is this play are men, they each have different forms of masculinity and
how they present it. Eddie Carbone is a man driven by masculinity and pride, and he shows his
masculinity and views on it very directly. In the opening of the play, he immediately says 'fellas' this
shows that he is clearly manly and he presents his manliness. His masculinity is presented in a
selfish way, he always ends 'up on the floor' when Beatrice has relatives over – he dislikes this as he
always wants to be the most important person in the household. Eddie is the master of the house,
and all decisions have to be made through him. When Catherine gets a new job he initially says no,

Masculinity is needed for Eddie to show his power over everyone, his need to do this leads to him
trying to teach Rodolpho how to box. Eddie knows that Rodolpho isn't a fighter, but makes him box
to show that he is more masculine than him. Rodolpho grazes Eddie's chin, and Eddie says 'attaboy'
because he is happy that Rodolpho is a bit more confident to try and fight. Eddie uses this as an
excuse for him to land 'with his right' and make Rodolpho 'slightly stagger'. Miller explores how
Eddie's masculinity leads him to pretend to teach Rodolpho how to box, just in order for him to hit
Rodolpho and prove his superiority. Eddie's masculinity also leads him to call Immigration on
Beatrice's cousins – he has been so threatened by how Rodolpho's lack of masculinity has still won
over Catherine. Eddie is so wound up by this that it leads to his inner conflict, and conflict with

Theories Of Masculinity
The term 'masculinity' connotes certain attributes that are associated with men. In today's
postmodern world gender theorists prefer the more fluid term 'masculinities' because male attributes
change throughout "space and time" (Reeser 2). Discourse shows that "masculinity is a fabrication
or a construct of a given historical cultural context" (ibid.).
The first theory of masculinity as a "personal identity" was introduced by Sigmund Freud (Roper
361) whereas in the Victorian and Edwardian periods the word 'manliness' was used. It had a fixed
meaning, could not be amended to individual properties of men and had to be achieved to be seen as
a 'true man' (cf. Whitehead 15). Usually the meaning associated with 'manliness' is dictated by

Edwardian soldiers should leave behind the former image of ideal masculinity which consisted of
Christian virtues like "straightforwardness, manly simplicity, openness and transparent honesty"
(Newsome 195) and "compassion, fairness, and altruism" (Roper 347) to a more aggressive identity
which reflected the needs of the army. Society believed to identify the perfect manly individual from
his "physical appearance, gestures, and speech (Nye 420) rather than his inner qualities. Ultimately,
the Great War provided an opportunity to prove one's character (cf. Roper 344). However, this failed
because modern warfare imposed mass casualties so that willpower and hardness could not help to
"comply to [heroic gender] roles" (Carden–Coyne 111). New military tactics like chemical
weaponry, aviation and heavy artillery made close combat impossible (cf. ibid. 1). Under these
circumstances many men suffered from mental breakdowns, then known as shell shock (cf. Winter
9). Doctors regarded the "'hysterical' or 'neurotic' male as an unpatriotic, welfare–dependent, and
unmanly shirker" (Crouthamel 62). Correspondingly, "nervous complaints [were] seen as

Hegemonic Masculinity : Masculinity And Masculinity
Introduction
This essay focuses on 'I Love You, Man', and discusses about homosocial relationship between two
men and explores 'hegemonic masculinity' and 'the field of masculinity' depicted in this film.
'Hegemonic masculinity', which is proposed by Connell (1987), is assumed to 'the pattern of practice
(i.e., things done, not just a set of role expectations or an identity) that allowed men's dominance
over women to continue.' (Connell and Messerschmidt 2005, p.832) However, hegemonic
masculinity has strong influence not only over women, but also over other men as Demetriou (2001,
p.341) states. Hegemonic masculinity dominates subordinated masculinity as well as women. 'The
field of masculinity', the theoretical model suggested by Coles ... Show more content on

His fiancé, felt it uncomfortable and complained about it. She insisted that "I'm totally weirded out
about what's going on between you two. You don't even look at me." As the relationship between
Peter and Sydney is getting stronger, the tie between Peter and his fiancé is getting weaken. This
scene indicates that homosocial relationship overwhelmed the intimate heterosexual relationship. It
means that women are subordinated by the strong power of homosocial relationship between men.
the status of women, and the whole question of arrangements between genders, is deeply and
inescapably inscribed in the structure even relationships that seem to exclude women––even in male
homosocial/homosexual relationships. (Sedgwick 1985, p.25)
In this way, intimate heterosexual relationship, which is usually seen as stronger than any other
relationships, is threaten by solid homosocial bond. It is perceived as expression of hegemonic
masculinity of men over women. This example clarifies that Women cannot exist without having
relationship with men.
The Field of Masculinity
In this movie, the field of masculinity is represented through men characters. The field of
masculinity is notion that shows the conflict between hegemonic masculinity and subordinated
masculinity (Coles 2009, p.36). Coles (2009, p.36) states that the field of masculinity

Masculinity In Cathedral
Men "are under constant careful scrutiny of other men" (Kimmel). They tend to watch each other,
rank each other and grant each other "acceptance into the realm of manhood" (Kimmel). Because
manhood is demonstrated by the approval of other men, men are inherently self–insecure and look
for the approval of others. This concept is evidently displayed in many of stories in Raymond
Carver's collection. Specifically, the short stories "They're Not Your Husband" and "Cathedral"
demonstrate the insecure nature of men. The need for the Earl Ober to seek admiration by other men
in story "They're Not Your Husband," and the narrator's apprehension of his wife's friend in
"Cathedral" ultimately indicate that men are self–doubting. Thus, men as a social ... Show more

When the narrator's wife tells the narrator that Robert recently lost his wife, he thinks that it is a
tragedy that Robert's wife was "a woman whose husband could never read the expression on her
face" (Carver 70). This proposition sounds atrocious to the narrator, because he and the other men of
the other stories are "used to determining their masculinity through the eyes of other men"
(Kimmel). Moreover, the insecurity of the male narrator is demonstrated by his apprehension of
Robert, for whom his wife once worked. The narrator is clearly uncomfortable having the Robert in
his house. Although he claims that this is because Robert is blind, it is rather obvious that it is due to
the fact that the narrator fears that Robert is a rival for his wife and thus, will usurp his masculinity
(Benson). However, the narrator soon realizes what it really means to be blind. As a result, he no
longer feels threatened by Robert and therefore is not insecure about his masculinity. In fact, when
the narrator's wife falls asleep on the couch with her robe open and showing "a juicy thigh", at first,
the narrator "draw[s] her robe back over her" (Carver 71). However, after he glances at the blind
man, and realizes that the he is no longer an intimidation, he "flip[s] the robe open again" (Carver
71). In other words, the narrator does not care that his wife probably would rather not be showing "a
juicy thigh." He would only consider the decency of his wife if he felt the another man was
threatening his masculinity. Moreover, once the narrator is no longer insecure, he is actually able to
connect with Robert, without fearing that Robert will steal his wife. The narrator agrees to help
Robert understand what a cathedral is. Because the narrator's insecurity is only present when the
narrator believes that Robert will emasculate him, the occurrences of the story

Manhood And Masculinity
What this discourse about gender has revealed is that there can be no stable definition of masculinity
as gender is a structure of social practice, which means that masculinity as a concept is man–made
and thus changes with society. Different times value different concepts of masculinity. For this, R.
W. Connell coined the term 'hegemonic masculinity', which means that at any given time, one form
of masculinity rather than others is culturally exalted. Connell goes on to describe this concept as
the configuration of gender practice which embodies the currently accepted answer to the problem
of the legitimacy of patriarchy, which guaranties (or is taken to guarantee) the dominant position of
men and the subordination of women (1995, 77).

When masculinity is 'normal' everything else becomes deviant. As a consequence, masculinity
sustains itself by abjecting that which is polluting and blurs the boundary between the natural and
unnatural. Thus to define masculinity, both the female and the homosexual are abjected from within
itself. The state of being unmarked is not rewarded to women by definition of gender and
homosexual men by definition of sexuality. If an individual is threatening the 'natural' boundaries of
masculinity by exhibiting either too feminine traits or a different sexuality, they are considered a
danger to the whole group of men.
The homosexual man is
widely considered the most dangerous threat to hegemonic masculinity as he generally resembles a
'proper' man, but in sexual practices he can be said to resemble the female (because of the act of
penetration which is generally only said to be reserved for females). Thus, the homosexual male can
be seen as an extreme condition of abjection. Homophobia directed by men against men can
therefore be defined as misogynistic, and transhistoricaly so. This means not only that it is
oppressive of the so–called feminine in men,

Socialization Of Masculinity
Masculinity is seen as a cultural constructions throughout history, by which males are assigned
certain social roles of their gender. Traditionally, the image of men is quite clear. Men have to be
hard working person, strong father, and disciplined. Historically, the role of man was to provide his
wife and family with sustenance. Therefore, masculinity has certain characteristics assigned by our
culture. Men are associated in an essential and optional way with the confidence certain aspects are
completed when deciding their masculinity and manliness. These aspects range from not crying
when they are harm. They can be aggressive and play violent games. The socialization of manhood
in our general public begins as early as the main phases of the first stages. The journey of
masculinity have been very difficult for many man in America because society expects things that
men can't handle.
An aspect that is expected from men is that they have to be educated and a good father. In Lahiri,
Jhumpa "A choice of Accommodations" Amit is a man who married Megan. Since Amit was a boy,
his parents always told him where to lodge him while they went back to India. He is sent to a school
called Langford while his parents go to India. When his parents returned to India and left him in
Langford, he felt that his life was miserable and he also felt abandoned. His parents never went to
visit him during his stay in Langford, and they did not go to his graduation because his father was a

Masculinity : Masculinity And Masculinity Essay
The following phrase are a string of words that no heterosexual man wants to hear, "You're acting
like a girl!" To a straight or heterosexual man those words would be a shot to his manhood. To most
men and boys in western society, masculinity is what separate the men from the women and the
boys from the girls. However, what is masculinity and why do most men and boys' try so hard to
guard theirs? My understanding of masculinity, and as technically defined, is having customary
qualities attributed to or usually applicable to a male. My position is that society encourages
hegemonic masculinity thus forming basis for males to exhibit traditional masculine qualities to fit
in, most women prefer men with these traditional masculine characteristics or qualities, and men try
to assert their masculinity so they are not considered feminine. In the next few paragraphs, I will to
take you on a journey on why masculinity is important to the communication of gender identity
from a heterosexual point of view.
Origin
To understand the masculinity you must know of its etymology. As etymonline.com explains it, the
term masculinity or more specifically "masculine" an adjective originated from the mid–14th
century defined as "belonging to the male grammatical gender." In the late 14th century meaning "of
men, male," from Old French term masculin "of the male sex" (12th century), from Latin
masculinus "male, of masculine gender," from masculus "male, masculine; worthy of a man,"

Masculinity Analysis
Masculinity to the extent the term can be briefly defined at all, is simultaneously a place in gender
relations, the practices through which men and women engage that place in gender and the effects of
these practices in bodily experience, personality and culture." (Connell 1995:72)
Connell (2000) argued that masculinities are multiple, thus differ from place to place, Connell
advances by suggesting that masculinities are socially constructed, therefore cannot be fixed. This
shows the complexity of what masculinity is, thus how can masculinity be in crisis if there is no
fixed meaning. Realisation that masculinities are being socially constructed can be dated back to the
psychoanalysis work of Freud, thus the social–psychological concept, which is the sex role
(Connell,2001) the "male sex role". Connell (2001) argued that the sex role, emphasises the correct
norms and roles for male behaviour. West and Zimmerman (1987) "Doing gender" explains that
masculinity is not something that boys and men have happen to them, rather, it is something that
they do, therefore through socialisation. Academics such as clatterbaugh (1998), argue that the term
masculinity is itself an issue, as he suggests there are seven ways in which masculinity can be used.
Clatterbaugh (1998) suggests that one of these is the cultural norms and beliefs and what masculine
should be, this is advanced by Flood (2002). Flood (2002) agrees that politicians and academic alike
are unsure what masculinity is,

Hegemonic Masculinity : Masculinity And Masculinity
What is hegemonic masculinity? What are the merits and shortcomings of this concept?
In Connell's original conception, hegemonic masculinity can be understood as 'the pattern of
practice that allowed men's dominance over women' (1987). Hegemonic masculinity is the exclusive
masculinity of which only a few exhibit. The majority of men in fact experience complicit
masculinity, allowing them to dominate in the patriarchal system in which it created. Connell (1987)
believed it was this that created a social system, in which masculinity was dominant over femininity.
Hegemonic masculinity was also dominant over other forms of masculinity experienced by men
from various class, racial or sexual backgrounds. Throughout this essay, I first aim to explain
hegemonic masculinity in its original concept, as this is vital when examining the studies and
theorisations of masculinity that followed RW Connell's original framework. This will lead to an
analysis of its reformulation in 2005 and an explanation of how the values of the concept, that were
retained have been demonstrated in studies of masculinities in various institutions. The critiques the
concept faced will then be discussed in relation to its reformulation. Finally, the failure of Connell to
underestimate the importance of different masculinities in his original conception will be examined.
The use of different masculinities has highlighted the need for men to come away from behaviours
such as violence and homophobia. It is in

Definition Of Masculinity
In the United States, there is no social tragedy more impactful than how society forces the males of
its population to express themselves through the values of masculinity. Society divides males and
females into two separate social classes and all the divided must follow the strict values connected
to their class. For women, they must face the oppression of femininity, which teaches them to
express themselves as lesser than men. Conversely, men live by the dominance based values of
masculinity, a set of ideals that teach them that seeking power, in action and expression, is all that
matters. The practice of forcing males to express only toxic masculinity has led to an American
society dominated by men, leaving women as their target for domination. Consequently, though the
ideals of masculinity serve as the mantra for men for it allows them to dominate, those values also
cost men their humanity.
In her book, We Should All be Feminists, Chimamanda Adichie proclaims, "We teach boys to be
afraid of fear, of weakness, of vulnerability. We teach them to mask their true selves, because they
have to be a hard man" (Adichie 26). Adichie also describes the relationship between a man and his
masculinity as a tight cage that keeps a man's image of expression confined to ideal masculinity.
Adichie's metaphor for masculinity is similar to activist Tony Porter's description of masculinity in
the form of the "man box," a strict set of values that traps men inside its stereotypes. Both

Machismo And Masculinity
Many socio–historical studies on masculinity have often revealed how Machismo is embedded in
the Latino culture within the United States. Machismo is defined as a strong sense of masculine
pride, often exhibited by Latino men. In Latino culture in the United States, machismo is not only
accepted, but always expected. In any study that investigates the Latino group, machismo is a
subject that cannot be left behind. In Latin American culture, machismo is seen as a socio–
psychological behavior through which the Latino males exhibit an overbearing attitude to anyone in
a position he sees as inferior to his, demanding total subservience. Even though Machismo has been
defined with an extremely negative connotation, macho can also be seen as a caring and responsible
person within the traditional Latino culture. The negative connotations that have been attributed to
Machismo are aggressiveness, womanizing, emotional insensitivity and physical strength.
Ethnographic studies have revealed that as a result of machismo, Latino men tend to distance
themselves from homosexuals, who they perceive as a big threat to theory sexuality, physical
dominance and personal safety. This paper discusses Machismo among Latino Americans in the
modern society and how it shapes the social constructs within which they live. It will discuss how
machismo shapes gay men and how they build cultural capital in order to negotiate through life. The
paper will also discuss the effects of machismo on

Masculinity In Disney
Hegemonic masculinity over the years has created an ideal image for males to look up too. There is
a lack of evolution and a negative body image being represented with Disney. There is a high
criteria in which every masculine character has to obtain. The media helps pressure the creation of
the perfect male in which Disney is following over the years. Movies from 1970s to modern day
movies show little evolution. With little to no evolution places an image for those watching an
image that they need to obtain. Masculine characters in Disney have a lack of change; these
characters have multiple traits what every male character has to demonstration.
Masculinity, and hyper masculinity is broadly concerned towards the social construction to what it

The Importance Of Masculinity
"Masculinity is not something given to you, but something you gain. And you gain it by winning
small battles with honor," (Norman Mailer). Masculinity holds a different meaning for everybody.
For some people it means being a male, but for others it holds a deeper meaning. For example, my
dad believes that in order to have masculinity he must be able to fix everything. He takes on tasks
having to do with landscaping, plumbing, lighting, and even interior design; most of the time, he
says something along the lines of "I can fix that in a minute" or "I've just got to go get the supplies."
He then waits until my mom gets a professional to come do the task, and he claims that "we did not
give him enough time to get it done." My dad, along with my other male friends, feels that since he
is a male he needs to prove his masculinity by putting on the act of a handyman. My father went to
school at Johnson and Wales University for a degree in criminal justice. Getting a bachelor's degree
in criminal justice does not teach one how to fix the caulk in a bathtub; in spite of that, my father
attempted this task. A couple of weeks ago, I realized that the caulk in my shower had begun to
deteriorate. I informed my dad that I thought it needed to be repaired and suggested he call a
plumber. His response went a little bit like this "Why do I need a plumber? That's an easy fix! All I
have to do is..." He then proceeded to explain to me how he believed one would fix the caulk in a
shower. I knew

Masculinity
There are different ways for men become masculine, people can teach them or let them figure it out
when growing up. Masculinity is usually described as being strong, manly, or dominate. It is also
used when someone is describing men and how masculine they are. Many people use the word
"masculine" to describe a man and put them into a category if they see that he fits. Many people
believe that boys should not be brought up by punishing them if they did not do something
masculine. They should be treated normal and not have to be terrified to be not masculine. Boys
should be brought up the way that does not force them to be something they do not want to be.
Germaine Greer wrote an essay called "Masculinity," which is about how people think how
masculinity is a way to show it off. She also talks about how they shape males into being masculine.
In Micheal Kaufman essay, "Men, Feminism, and Mens Contradictory Experiences of Power," he
says that men should not be "trained" to be masculine it should come natural and not have
consequences if not done right. He also talks about how feminism is impacting masculinity and how
men are supporting to help women with the problems they have in society. Both authors make two
different points about how masculinity should be taught, but Kaufman's idea is more effective in the
21st century; it allows the young men to be able to figure out their masculinity by their selves.

Masculinity In America
As Ehrmann states in the opening scene, "If you're going to be a man in this world, you better learn
how to dominate and control people and circumstances." This quote summarizes the never–ending
goal men must meet in our society. This goal, of maintaining masculinity, has lead to the violence,
depression, and confusion among males. In the film, they examine the cause and effect of male
gender–policing in our society. Through personal anecdotes and expert testimony, the film sheds
light on the painful cost of masculinity in America.
The behaviors and societal norms we associate with male and female are socially constructed. As

For young males, "suicide is the third largest cause of death." Also, at 15 "boys begin to have five
times the rate of suicide as girls. Everyday 3 or more boys commit suicide" (Dr. Way, The mask You

turned to drugs because of the loneliness he felt spoke loudly to not only white masculinity but
minority masculinity. As a minority, he faced the pressures of being a man and being a first–
generation American; having to make his mother proud of him. Another heartbreaking moment was
during the mask exercise Ashanti Branch had his students perform. Hearing the things some of them
were going through and the clip of the boy crying in his lap because of the burden he carries every
day, speaks to the need to allow young males to express their emotions in a judgment–free
environment. Through this, as shown in the San Quentin program, men are able to not only

Androgyny And Masculinity
Many people believe that he is gay. He dresses in feminine colors and treats others with a more
delicate touch, but can be aggressive and hard working. He exhibits qualities that men and women
both have. He goes beyond the rules society has set for him. He's a straight male who wears pink,
doesn't have a naturally aggressive personality, and is okay with feelings. Maybe you're a bit
confused. The man described is a very generalized depiction of the word "androgyny." Androgynous
men and women show equally masculine and feminine traits. Today in our world, men and women
alike are bound to the idea that men must be masculine and women must be feminine, but that isn't
the case.
Being a high school student, masculinity and femininity don't play a huge role in day to day life, but,
when you take a step back and really look, you see this idea is everywhere. Starting at the beginning
of your life, gender identity and gender roles are present in the color hat you wear; boys wear blue,
girls wear pink. From the very first time your mother holds you in her arms, she can associate you

The Role Of Masculinity
Looks are a part of masculinity too. They play an important role for transgender people who are
expected to look a certain way in order to pass as their gender from others (Schilt, 2006). Schilt
mentions that it's extremely problematic for transgender men when it comes to looks because
sometimes their bodies do not match with the masculinity traits of what the society expects. Peralta

men by appearance cues like their hairstyle, clothes, and mannerisms without testosterones (Schilt,

are often mistaken as young boys. Schilt (2006) also mentions that body structures is also another
category where a lot of trans men feel like they lack and feel uncomfortable due to it. Body
structures are important and for men, being tall is the ideal structure and part of the cultural
construction of hegemonic masculinity. Unfortunately, many trans men, cannot achieve the ideal

Gender, Masculinity, And The Hegemonic View Of Masculinity
Intro
"Masc for masc" (masculine looking for masculine) and "straight acting" (not being seen as a
stereotype and being able to be excepted by heterosexual men) are terms used by Gay men to
classify the type of man they are looking for in a partner; actively rejecting and devaluing femininity
and upholding the hegemonic view of masculinity. Therefor I am researching the "how do gay and
straight Latinos construct their masculinity?" Straight men deem anything feminine as less than,
thus gay men are ousted. This ousting of gay men is a byproduct of heterosexism in which a men
only date women and vice versa, thus gay men are seen as effeminate for the sole reason of dating
other men. In an attempt to reclaim their lost masculinity gay men are rejecting effeminate men in
an attempt to be seen as "one of the good gays". The traits of reclaiming what gay Latinos feel is lost
is strongly tied to femiphobia, internalized homophobia, and toxic masculinity. Gay men want to be
seen as "normal" and "just one of the guys" at the cost of their fellow gay men's humanity and
manhood. They want to be seen as the "good gay" which I define as a gay man that wants to be
removed from the stereotype and behaves and present as "straight" I want to investigate how gay
Latinos specifically construct their masculinity and if they are contracting it based on their straight
counterparts. It is important to distinguish how important masculinity is to Latin men specifically
gay Latinos and see if a

Masculinity in the Media
Masculinity in Media
This research looks at the association of masculinity with violence, racism, power and the
objectification of women, which has been around since early civilization. This study also shows how
these concepts are still evident today in the media. Masculinity in the media is portrayed as
muscular, violent, angry, aggressive, dominant, and warrior like. The rhetoric in media, as it relates
to masculinity, has influenced the amount of violence in the world. The association between
violence and masculinity is relevant to communications because the portrayals of masculinity in the
media led me to become a violent, and angry teenager. I grew up in a military family. For me it
seemed like the military was cool, and I looked up to the people in my family who served. I played
with G.I. Joes, Star Wars toys, watched war movies, watched and played sports, wore sports apparel
and played Halo and Call of duty. I was subconsciously filling my gender role by making
"masculine" consumer choices that would affect choices I would make in the future. The violent
toys and games that I grew up with became a part of me. I got into many fights in high school
because I thought it was fun, I thought I was cool, and I thought the toughest football player at the
school. I started to become more and more interested in the military and rap music in high school
and I read many military books and listened to a lot of rap music. I read a biography about Pat

Masculinity In Macbeth
Too much man is bad for a Man
Gender roles are a highly disputed section of society. Men specifically must be masculine, or portray
attributes accepted by society as masculine. When masculinity is challenged it can lead to a man
making atrocious decision to affirm his masculinity in the eyes of his peers. William Shakespeare's
play, Macbeth, demonstrates the dangers of masculinity. In the play Macbeth has the ambition, but
lacks the confidence and motivation to become King of Scotland. While struggling with conscious
his wife, Lady Macbeth challenges his masculinity.
Throughout the play masculinity is challenged as a way to motivate men to commit horrible crimes.
For instance, when Macbeth confides to Lady Macbeth that he no longer wishes to kill King
Duncan, Lady Macbeth denounces his masculinity, shouting "What beast was't, then,/That made you
break this enterprise to me?/When you durst do it, then you were a man" (I.VII.53).Lady Macbeth's

Someone who is the star point–guard or varsity quarterback is considered to be highly masculine
due to their athletic supremacy and high profile position. However, someone who is skinny and very
smart would be viewed as less masculine because of their physical attributes and likes/dislikes. But
when that masculinity is challenged, especially that of someone with ambition such as quarterback
who wishes to become a professional, it can lead to irrational decisions. For a quarterback it could
be taking steroids to become stronger, or completely neglecting school work to practice. Not only
are steroids illegal, they are dangerous for your physical well being and neglecting schoolwork
could lead to ineligibility. Masculinity is as dangerous as having too much power. It'll go to your

In today's society, boys and men are groomed to be non–emotional, tough, and aggressive in order to

Hegemonic Masculinity
In a world of constant dichotomies, there is always a debate of what is right and wrong, which
creates division amongst political and societal lines. The fixed binary concept of gender has come
under scrutiny as it creates stereotypical views on the behaviors of a man and woman, in the aspects
of what really defines masculinity and femininity. However, it seems to be that, not only can gender
be fluid but the behaviors associated with "men and women" can fall within a continuum of gender
performances. It is through one's actions, that gender identity is expressed and they can come in a
range from mild to extreme behaviors, the latter being the strict boundaries on the way one should
be acting in society. This idea being that women should be ladylike and men should be strictly
masculine. Hegemonic masculinity is constantly reaffirmed and challenged by men across cultures,
in some places it can create aspects of toxic masculinity, while in others, men try to offer a softer
side of this defined behavior. Toxic masculinity depicts the extreme conformity of traditionally male
characteristics, which can create harmful societal effects as men try to overly showcase these "toxic"
masculine norms.
Gender has become a word that is really meant to create a set example of cultural expected ideas and
behaviors for the different sexes. In order to make life easier to understand society creates this
dichotomy of gender standards to mold the idea of what is or is not a gender. Through the

Masculinity and violence
Violence is a mechanism of coercive control that is used to maintain and reinforce gender difference
and hierarchy. Building on Lynch 's (2009) claim that hegemonic masculinity is "toxic to both the
men and women left in its wake" this essay aims to explore the relationship between hegemonic
masculinity and violence. Placing a specific focus on acts of intimate partner violence and mass
shootings, and exploring the works of Lynch (2009), Keith (2011), Baugher, & Gazmararian (2015),
Kimmel, Hearn, & Connell (2004), Reidy, Berke, Gentile, & Zeichner (2014) and, Katz, Young,
Earp, & Jhally (1999 & 2013), this essay seeks to argue that the strict regulation of masculinity as
well as a history of encouraging male violence in our society has created a dangerous and hostile
climate for both men and women to exist in.
Masculinity is a social construct based on a hierarchical system of gendered difference and
dominance. It is used to assume a primal and essential difference between male bodies and female
bodies, through a binary organisational system that assigns physical, emotional, and behavioural
characteristics to people according to what is regarded as masculine and feminine. The construct of
gender plays a significant role in our lives, shaping our identities and experiences of the world.
Gender assignment is one of the first ways we become socialised in the world, leading us to present
ourselves in specific ways and perform our respective genders

The Masculinity Of Women 's Masculinity
Men often receive harsher punishment for breaking gender roles and this may explain why men are
more likely to reaffirm masculinity than women are to reaffirm femininity.
In a similar study done by Robinson et al in 2001, participants were told that other members of the
same–sex could withstand a pain pressor task for a particular amount of time. Some participants
were told others members of the same–sex typically withstood the pain task for 30 seconds, while
other participants were told that members of the same–sex could withstand the pain for about 90
seconds. A final control group was given no expectations about the pain task. After treatment, each
group performed the pain pressor task and was asked to report feelings of pain. Robinson found that
women reported more pain sensitivity and lower tolerance than men in the control group. These
findings are consistent with other pain tolerance tests in that women had higher ratings of pain.
Interestingly, women and men responded similarly to pain when expectations about pain tolerance
were provided before the pain pressor task (Robinson et al., 2001). It would seem that when men
and women are given a clear definitions of gender norms, they are likely to conform to these
definitions. When no definitions of gender norms are provided, women and men will respond to pain
in ways they have been previously socialized. The results of Robinson's study are similar to Fowler's
in that situational cues can be used to manipulate men and

Recently, while scrolling through my timeline as every bored teenager does to avoid doing work, I

understanding, four out of ten males feel they lack the qualities and abilities that partners look for in

In a letter to her aunt, she describes that "whether married or single, he [Wickham] must always be

Manliness is a quality in life not only for man, but for woman as well. Many tend to seek manliness
in the male gender role, yet what one does not realize is women often play a large role just as much.
Often defined as a set of attributes and behaviors constructed mainly with men, but often enough
with women, manliness or masculinity can affect the inner personality of any human being. As we
take a deeper look into the lines of William Shakespeare's Macbeth, different qualities of manliness
is widely spread across the board. From Lady Macbeth to King Duncan and the Witches to Macbeth,
we see a very distinct value of manliness portrayed throughout all. With such being said, the true

But underlying those associations we experience more of an inner hidden quality of chivalry or
being heroic. Throughout the play, we see a change in the way characters reveal their innermost
feelings towards certain situations. Every character wants to be a hero or wants to be the one
everyone fears and looks up to. Personally, I think chivalry and heroism play a very important role
for being a man in any day in time. Both King Duncan and Macbeth are seen as chivalric but in
different ways. With chivalry being a quality of manliness, such is brought on by how one can
handle their true emotions and actions not only with themselves but with others. Furthermore, the
most problematic character of chivalry is seen to be Macbeth. As the play grows strong, Macbeth
was once seen to be a "manly man" with strong moral and stable values. As seen early on in the
meeting with King Duncan, Duncan awards Macbeth as being the "Worthy Cawdor" for being so
chivalric in battle (I. vi. 34–58). Once he is convinced to murder Duncan and has his mindset
changed by his spouse, Macbeth starts to fall. Chivalry is a trait or quality in which a man must earn
and learn to control, but seeing how much negative chivalry changed Macbeth really resembles the
magnitude of how much a man can be unstable. As Maria Howell puts it, "Heroic vales destabilize
man's inner coherence so that he can no

Hegemonic Masculinity
Hegemonic masculinity is a social construction which suggests to society that men must be stronger
than the feminine of the species in every way. By definition, hegemonic masculinity is the
dominance of men over women, where men must sustain this dominance in any way. Defining what
the hegemonic masculine ideal is in Canada is difficult as we are a very young, multicultural
country, so the notion of the ideal man is a warped characterization of the ideal American male. This
paper seeks to prove that hegemonic masculinity is a social construction which is detrimental to
society. The negative effects of hegemonic masculinity on men include; male violence, misogyny,
and homophobia which are inextricably linked to how we define manhood as a culture. ... Show

Giving up the idea of boy will be boys, especially in the case of violence is key to resolving some of
the issues. That is, when two boys are hitting each other this is a violent act, and they should be
taught that it is not the answer. As well, associating boys with words such as power, dominance,
aggression and guns, should be changed because it will have boys feel as though they have to be a
certain way to be a real man and that includes aggressive behaviours. Another solution to ending
violence in masculinity would be to stop comparing it to femininity. As the narrator in Tough Guise

Masculinity In Beowulf
Masculinity Past vs. Present Did you know there is a great controversy with today's society, putting
men over women? It is sparking debates across the world on why men are thought to be stronger and
be able to do more activities than women. There is an ongoing debate between men and women on
equality. Beowulf and contemporary culture assert their masculinity through physical strength,
financial wealth, honor, perseverance, reputation, and intelligence.
In Beowulf's Society, physical strength was thought of a man who could conquer anything that he
would be faced with, such as a monster like Grendel. Another example from Beowulf, is when he
says to Unferth "I was the strongest swimmer of all" (Heaney 534). This shows that Beowulf was ...

Another important thing is talking about how financial wealth plays a role in masculinity.
Financial wealth played a vital role in Beowulf's society, such as when Shield Sheafson had all of
that treasure buried with him when he died, "Far–fetched treasures were piled upon him, and
precious gear" (Heaney 36–37). In Biblical times, masculinity was also associated with having
wealth in order to support his household, "But if anyone does not provide for his own, and
especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever." (New
International Version, 1 Tim. 5.8). Now in today's culture, men are associated with having the most
money in the household. This is most definitely true, because there have been studies that show
there is a wage gap between men and women, "2016, women working full time in the United States
typically were paid just 80 percent of what men were paid, a gap of 20 percent" (Miller, "The
Simple Truth about the Gender Pay Gap"). There is a vast difference between Beowulf's culture and
ours, it's the fact that women now pursue a higher education to achieve a more successful life than
just letting a man making more money stop them and women also work outside of the house now,
"Women are graduating from college and attending graduate schools at higher rates than men"
(Adamczyk 2016). Overall, men being put in charge of money have changed in a great deal over the
years,

Toxic Masculinity
Few would argue against the notion that society has unrealistic and unfair expectations of women.
However, little time seems to be spent talking about harmful societal expectations of men,
specifically those associated with toxic masculinity. Toxic masculinity is when men feel the need to
prove their masculinity by upholding traditional masculine values and behaviors in a way that is
detrimental to themselves and others. These behaviors traditionally associated with men include a
need to prove one's strength over others, blocking out emotional attachments, asserting dominance
over others, and denying traditionally feminine behavior, such as crying and showing emotional
weakness (Hess). Michael Omi's article "In Living Color: Race and American Culture" describes
how the media has had a large role in perpetuating racial stereotypes, but all his arguments can very
well be related to gender stereotype. Movies that glorifies toxic masculinity will inevitably
legitimize its behaviors to the public. Therefore, media that critiques stereotypes is important to
shifting audience opinions. Despite being a comedy film about a team of superheroes fighting aliens
threatening the universe, the 2017 Marvel film Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 tackles this subject of
toxic masculinity through essentially all of its male characters. In particular, the movie's protagonist,
Peter, is the focal point of this commentary. Peter's mother died when he was young and his father

In Paul Theroux's essay "being a Man" Theroux describes the detrimental effects of gender roles on
the individual, specifically focusing on males and their quest for masculinity. "Even the expression
'Be a man!' strikes me as insulting and abusive. It means: Be stupid, be unfeeling, obedient,
soldierly, and stop thinking."
Theroux continues by describing society's idea of manliness as destructive. A male's desire to be
"manly" fuels anti feministic beliefs, and without disposing of this traditional idea of manliness,
males are doomed to repeat a cycle of insecurity and dependence on others to boost their own egos.
Theroux builds on the idea of the grotesque mature of manhood in America by describing how
masculinity "Denies men the natural friendship of women." He uses his own experiences in order to
expand on this point. Theroux claims that at the age where he craved the attention of girls, he was

On the contrary, he describes it as "an unmerciful and punishing burden." While women have to deal
with a variety of problems, men also have to deal with their own set of problems and pressures

objecting feminism, "And this is also why men often object to feminism, but are afraid to explain
why: of course women have justified grievance, but most men believe– and with reason– that their
lives are just as bad." This statement is a critical point in the essay because it drives home the idea
that both men and women have their own set of grievances.. However, the issues women face are
much more prominent, therefore the problems that men face are overshadowed by the problems that
women face. While Theroux acknowledges the struggle of women, he wants to shatter the illusion

Masculinity And Masculinity, By Michael Kimmel Essay
In western culture, men are often subject to extreme methods of proving their masculinity, and to
reinforce what it truly means to be a man. Michael Kimmel, famous sociologist said, "Masculinity is
the relentless repudiation of the feminine" (Kimmel, 2015), which not only reflects how men think
about themselves but how North Americans as an entire culture think about masculinity and
manhood. The following pages will be centered on issues of the lens of masculinity in contexts such
as the sphere of education, the predominance and dependence of social relationships, and most
importantly – fatherhood, which will be of a larger focus as the male enters adulthood.
As a child, women and men are predominantly on the same page. With the exception of their shared
interests and activities. As a child grows up, the classroom setting starts to highlight the differences
between both boys and girls. Most often, education is catered towards girls and the learning styles
that girls flourish in (Vincent & Ball, 2007). Girls outperform boys in almost every subject when
they are elementary school age (Vincent & Ball, 2007) because in the classroom, it is taught that the
qualities with being a good student are most often synonymous with being a good girl, and here is
where you can see a dichotomy begin to occur (Vincent & Ball, 2007). Boys are conditioned from
the beginning to understand that being a man, and being masculine is the polar opposite of what it
means to be feminine. Early

Google defines masculinity as a possession of qualities traditionally associated with men, using,
"handsome, muscled, and driven, he's a prime example of masculinity" as their example. Although
this definition of masculinity is common, it is undeveloped and exclusive to other forms of
masculinity. Sociologists such as Raewyn Connell, Eric Anderson and Michael Kimmel have
formed their own theories and definitions of masculinity. In this course, we have read an excerpt
from Eric Anderson's, Inclusive Masculinities, Raewyn Connell's, Masculinities and Gender; In

In his book, Inclusive Masculinities; The Changing Nature of Masculinities, Anderson analyzes
homophobia, the development of homohysteria ("homosexually–panicked culture in which
suspicion [of homosexuality] permeates") and the change in the dynamics of male relationships.
Anderson also analyzes Connell's HMT and suggest that while her theory may have been a useful
way of understanding masculinities in the late 1900's, masculinity is evolving. Anderson explains
how the HMT suggests that masculinity ascribed, constant and one has little to no chances of
climbing the gender hierarchy. After doing research on athletes and college students and realizing
that HMT could not account for the relationship dynamics of these young men, Anderson developed
an opposing theory–the inclusion theory. The inclusion theory suggests that male relationships are
evolving and that social stigmas towards homosexuality are decreasing as well as misogynistic
views/opinions over time. Anderson believes that, although some may continue to hold conservative
beliefs about masculinity, there is a movement among younger generations that is more accepting
and encouraging of fluid presentations of masculinity.

in colonial times to present day. Kimmel conducted his research by examining American cultural

Hegemonic Masculinity : Masculinity And Masculinity
Multiple Masculinities
The certain qualities a man processes plays into how masculine he is rated to be. The way he
portrays himself in his looks, actions and everyday life paints a bigger picture for the type of male
he is. Connell argues that hegemonic masculinity is the ultimate goal that men strive for. Hegemonic
masculinity is the idea of men being powerful, strong and dominant. Not many people actually live
up to this theory, but nearly all men strive to achieve it. Marginalized masculinity and subordinated
masculinity branch off of hegemonic masculinity. Marginalized masculinity is the idea that
structural factors such as race or economic class compose difficulties on reaching the goal of
hegemonic masculinity. Subordinated masculinity correlates specifically to homosexual men.
Although possessing feminine personality traits, these men can earn "masculinity insurance" if they
portray themselves as hegemonic with characteristics such as athleticism or leadership. Connell also
mentions, "emphasized femininity" as the female's version of hegemonic masculinity. Emphasized
femininity is the exaggeration of female characteristics. It is described as the idea that women
should accommodate to men's wants and needs. Each of these masculinity ideologies fit within
individual, interactional or structural levels of analysis. According to lecture, the individual level of
analysis has to do with what is within a person's gender, whether it is biological or psychological.

Masculinity In 'The Terminator'
What defines masculinity is the traits and values that are considered to characterise the male gender
at any given time. Consequently, the definition of masculinity keeps changing as people change their
views of what characteristics a man should require. The biggest influence of the definition of
masculinity is media. It is where we receive information about what is "normal" and "cool". Films
and television shows have a huge impact on how we view the world and they can alter our opinions
on different topics. On that basis, Film and television play a big role in how we define masculinity.
In this essay I will look at how gender is constructed in "The Terminator" and how cultural aspects
influence the film.
During the late 20th century medias association to defining masculinity became more visible. It was
reflecting the current values of masculinity as well as to help shape it into what it would become in
the future.
American values in the 1970's rapidly changed due to a variety of new political movements. Two of
these had a great deal of impact on the ideals of masculinity. Men's Liberty Movement and the
second wave of feminism helped blur the lines between masculinity and femininity.
During the 70s various films and TV shows featured strong, intelligent females that where

Masculinity At its Manliest In both Douglas Schrock and Michael Schwalbe's Men, Masculinity, and
Manhood Acts and Sharon Bird's Welcome to the Mens's Club, we see compelling arguments for the
treatments on the categories of "masculinity." By comparing both articles, the significant similarities
and differences between the two variations can be identified. In doing so, the function of
"masculinity" in society, according to each author, can also be seen. Using the "masculine" Kristoff
in Disney's film Frozen, these categories may be challenged to show which author might have the
better approach. As far as definitions of masculinity from both authors, a significant similarity can
be seen. For Schrock and Schwalbe, masculinity is seen as "form of collective male practice that has
as its effect the subordination of women." In other words, masculinity has a direct correlation to
power dominance over women. In Bird's article she also states that hegemonic masculinity
maintains "practices that institutionalize men's dominance over women." Therefore, these articles
are in agreement with each other when speaking on the definition of masculinity. However, a
significant difference can be seen in each author's treatment in the category of "masculinity." Bird's
article breaks masculinity into three components that include emotional detachment,
competitiveness, and sexual objectification of women. These three

Masculinity Essay

  • 1. Masculinity Essay Part A: Bronies and the Social Construction of Masculinity According to Connell, there are four masculinities present in our society: hegemonic, complicit, marginalized, and subordinate. Hegemonic masculinity is the dominant form of masculinity in society. It is culturally valued as the most type of masculinity. Connell states that the qualities of hegemonic masculinity include heterosexuality, whiteness, physical strength, and suppression of emotions. When men do not fit the characteristics of hegemonic masculinity but they do not challenge it means they belong to the complicit masculinity category. These men often admire the characteristics of hegemonic masculinity. Marginalized masculinity is when men cannot fit into the hegemonic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Bronies experience gender policing by family, friends, and the media. "Gender policing is the responses to the violation of gender rules aimed at promoting conformity (Wade 355)." In the film Bronies: The Extremely Unexpected Adult Fans of My Little Pony, some Bronies could tell their stories about telling their friends and family and how other peers viewed them when they came out as a Brony. Lyle told his story about his Brony journey. One–day Lyle asked his mother what she would think if he liked the show My Little Pony, and she said she would be worried about him so he played it off as a joke. He felt his own mother would not accept the fact that he liked the show. He did not want his father to ever find out because he did not want his dad to think he was gay or a man–child. He did not want his parents to view him differently all because he liked a show aimed for younger girls. Alex was another guy from the video sharing his story. Alex lives in a place where a people believe that if a guy is not masculine that means they are homosexual. Alex was bullied at a gas station because he had pony decals on his car. The guy who bullied Alex about his car smashed his back window where the decals were at. Then the guy "playfully" pointed a gun at Alex and told him to stop with the gay girly shit. The media only criticizes Bronies by calling them weird, gay, creepy, pedophiles, disgusting, feminine, etc. Bronies face ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Masculinity In Entourage A hegemonic reading is also useful in examination of the masculine ideologies portrayed in Entourage. However, rather than reinforcing the traditional view of the hegemonic male, the characters of Entourage go against the grain to introduce different ideologies of masculinity as it is socially understood. Historically, the traditional male–male relationships have adhered to the traditional formula of masculinity, defined by men who strived for sexual conquests and sought power within social hierarchy while remaining emotionally inexpressive. While these are all ideologies of homosocial relations and are present in some aspects of Entourage, the relationships between the characters of Entourage represent a new type of masculinity all together. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The strong homosocial bonds between the men are what facilitates and reinforces the power structure of masculinities in Entourage. The series does not focus only on the movie star Vince but is instead carried on the relationship between Vince and his friends: manager and best friend "E"; his older and unsuccessful actor brother, Johnny "Drama" Chase; the devoted driver and weed carrier "Turtle"; and overtly masculine agent, Ari Gold. The show is about the core group. Vince himself reiterates that he goes as the group goes. That is, he refers to "our life" not his. The characters in Entourage hold a much stronger bond than a traditional 'entourage' or same sex friendships. The four main characters of the series have know each other since they were kids and have since formed an extremely close bond similar to that of a brotherhood. An examination of the relationship between these characters brings the emergence of a new form of masculinity that is welcomed by viewers. The show does not reject the former ideology of the hegemonic male who revolves around power as embodied by Ari Gold, Vince's aggressive and disrespectful agent who employs dominance over women. • 5. The Bridge Masculinity Masculinity is a key motif of a view from the bridge, throughout the play Miller explores masculinity in varying ways. Ideas of masculinity are explored by the variations of masculinity in the play, how masculinity is challenged and how masculinity leads Eddie to react in different ways. The majority of the character is this play are men, they each have different forms of masculinity and how they present it. Eddie Carbone is a man driven by masculinity and pride, and he shows his masculinity and views on it very directly. In the opening of the play, he immediately says 'fellas' this shows that he is clearly manly and he presents his manliness. His masculinity is presented in a selfish way, he always ends 'up on the floor' when Beatrice has relatives over – he dislikes this as he always wants to be the most important person in the household. Eddie is the master of the house, and all decisions have to be made through him. When Catherine gets a new job he initially says no, due ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Masculinity is needed for Eddie to show his power over everyone, his need to do this leads to him trying to teach Rodolpho how to box. Eddie knows that Rodolpho isn't a fighter, but makes him box to show that he is more masculine than him. Rodolpho grazes Eddie's chin, and Eddie says 'attaboy' because he is happy that Rodolpho is a bit more confident to try and fight. Eddie uses this as an excuse for him to land 'with his right' and make Rodolpho 'slightly stagger'. Miller explores how Eddie's masculinity leads him to pretend to teach Rodolpho how to box, just in order for him to hit Rodolpho and prove his superiority. Eddie's masculinity also leads him to call Immigration on Beatrice's cousins – he has been so threatened by how Rodolpho's lack of masculinity has still won over Catherine. • 7. Theories Of Masculinity The term 'masculinity' connotes certain attributes that are associated with men. In today's postmodern world gender theorists prefer the more fluid term 'masculinities' because male attributes change throughout "space and time" (Reeser 2). Discourse shows that "masculinity is a fabrication or a construct of a given historical cultural context" (ibid.). The first theory of masculinity as a "personal identity" was introduced by Sigmund Freud (Roper 361) whereas in the Victorian and Edwardian periods the word 'manliness' was used. It had a fixed meaning, could not be amended to individual properties of men and had to be achieved to be seen as a 'true man' (cf. Whitehead 15). Usually the meaning associated with 'manliness' is dictated by "those ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Edwardian soldiers should leave behind the former image of ideal masculinity which consisted of Christian virtues like "straightforwardness, manly simplicity, openness and transparent honesty" (Newsome 195) and "compassion, fairness, and altruism" (Roper 347) to a more aggressive identity which reflected the needs of the army. Society believed to identify the perfect manly individual from his "physical appearance, gestures, and speech (Nye 420) rather than his inner qualities. Ultimately, the Great War provided an opportunity to prove one's character (cf. Roper 344). However, this failed because modern warfare imposed mass casualties so that willpower and hardness could not help to "comply to [heroic gender] roles" (Carden–Coyne 111). New military tactics like chemical weaponry, aviation and heavy artillery made close combat impossible (cf. ibid. 1). Under these circumstances many men suffered from mental breakdowns, then known as shell shock (cf. Winter 9). Doctors regarded the "'hysterical' or 'neurotic' male as an unpatriotic, welfare–dependent, and unmanly shirker" (Crouthamel 62). Correspondingly, "nervous complaints [were] seen as ... • 9. Hegemonic Masculinity : Masculinity And Masculinity Introduction This essay focuses on 'I Love You, Man', and discusses about homosocial relationship between two men and explores 'hegemonic masculinity' and 'the field of masculinity' depicted in this film. 'Hegemonic masculinity', which is proposed by Connell (1987), is assumed to 'the pattern of practice (i.e., things done, not just a set of role expectations or an identity) that allowed men's dominance over women to continue.' (Connell and Messerschmidt 2005, p.832) However, hegemonic masculinity has strong influence not only over women, but also over other men as Demetriou (2001, p.341) states. Hegemonic masculinity dominates subordinated masculinity as well as women. 'The field of masculinity', the theoretical model suggested by Coles ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His fiancé, felt it uncomfortable and complained about it. She insisted that "I'm totally weirded out about what's going on between you two. You don't even look at me." As the relationship between Peter and Sydney is getting stronger, the tie between Peter and his fiancé is getting weaken. This scene indicates that homosocial relationship overwhelmed the intimate heterosexual relationship. It means that women are subordinated by the strong power of homosocial relationship between men. the status of women, and the whole question of arrangements between genders, is deeply and inescapably inscribed in the structure even relationships that seem to exclude women––even in male homosocial/homosexual relationships. (Sedgwick 1985, p.25) In this way, intimate heterosexual relationship, which is usually seen as stronger than any other relationships, is threaten by solid homosocial bond. It is perceived as expression of hegemonic masculinity of men over women. This example clarifies that Women cannot exist without having relationship with men. The Field of Masculinity In this movie, the field of masculinity is represented through men characters. The field of masculinity is notion that shows the conflict between hegemonic masculinity and subordinated masculinity (Coles 2009, p.36). Coles (2009, p.36) states that the field of masculinity ... • 11. Masculinity In Cathedral Men "are under constant careful scrutiny of other men" (Kimmel). They tend to watch each other, rank each other and grant each other "acceptance into the realm of manhood" (Kimmel). Because manhood is demonstrated by the approval of other men, men are inherently self–insecure and look for the approval of others. This concept is evidently displayed in many of stories in Raymond Carver's collection. Specifically, the short stories "They're Not Your Husband" and "Cathedral" demonstrate the insecure nature of men. The need for the Earl Ober to seek admiration by other men in story "They're Not Your Husband," and the narrator's apprehension of his wife's friend in "Cathedral" ultimately indicate that men are self–doubting. Thus, men as a social ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When the narrator's wife tells the narrator that Robert recently lost his wife, he thinks that it is a tragedy that Robert's wife was "a woman whose husband could never read the expression on her face" (Carver 70). This proposition sounds atrocious to the narrator, because he and the other men of the other stories are "used to determining their masculinity through the eyes of other men" (Kimmel). Moreover, the insecurity of the male narrator is demonstrated by his apprehension of Robert, for whom his wife once worked. The narrator is clearly uncomfortable having the Robert in his house. Although he claims that this is because Robert is blind, it is rather obvious that it is due to the fact that the narrator fears that Robert is a rival for his wife and thus, will usurp his masculinity (Benson). However, the narrator soon realizes what it really means to be blind. As a result, he no longer feels threatened by Robert and therefore is not insecure about his masculinity. In fact, when the narrator's wife falls asleep on the couch with her robe open and showing "a juicy thigh", at first, the narrator "draw[s] her robe back over her" (Carver 71). However, after he glances at the blind man, and realizes that the he is no longer an intimidation, he "flip[s] the robe open again" (Carver 71). In other words, the narrator does not care that his wife probably would rather not be showing "a juicy thigh." He would only consider the decency of his wife if he felt the another man was threatening his masculinity. Moreover, once the narrator is no longer insecure, he is actually able to connect with Robert, without fearing that Robert will steal his wife. The narrator agrees to help Robert understand what a cathedral is. Because the narrator's insecurity is only present when the narrator believes that Robert will emasculate him, the occurrences of the story ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Manhood And Masculinity What this discourse about gender has revealed is that there can be no stable definition of masculinity as gender is a structure of social practice, which means that masculinity as a concept is man–made and thus changes with society. Different times value different concepts of masculinity. For this, R. W. Connell coined the term 'hegemonic masculinity', which means that at any given time, one form of masculinity rather than others is culturally exalted. Connell goes on to describe this concept as the configuration of gender practice which embodies the currently accepted answer to the problem of the legitimacy of patriarchy, which guaranties (or is taken to guarantee) the dominant position of men and the subordination of women (1995, 77). If ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When masculinity is 'normal' everything else becomes deviant. As a consequence, masculinity sustains itself by abjecting that which is polluting and blurs the boundary between the natural and unnatural. Thus to define masculinity, both the female and the homosexual are abjected from within itself. The state of being unmarked is not rewarded to women by definition of gender and homosexual men by definition of sexuality. If an individual is threatening the 'natural' boundaries of masculinity by exhibiting either too feminine traits or a different sexuality, they are considered a danger to the whole group of men. The homosexual man is widely considered the most dangerous threat to hegemonic masculinity as he generally resembles a 'proper' man, but in sexual practices he can be said to resemble the female (because of the act of penetration which is generally only said to be reserved for females). Thus, the homosexual male can be seen as an extreme condition of abjection. Homophobia directed by men against men can therefore be defined as misogynistic, and transhistoricaly so. This means not only that it is oppressive of the so–called feminine in men, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. Socialization Of Masculinity Masculinity is seen as a cultural constructions throughout history, by which males are assigned certain social roles of their gender. Traditionally, the image of men is quite clear. Men have to be hard working person, strong father, and disciplined. Historically, the role of man was to provide his wife and family with sustenance. Therefore, masculinity has certain characteristics assigned by our culture. Men are associated in an essential and optional way with the confidence certain aspects are completed when deciding their masculinity and manliness. These aspects range from not crying when they are harm. They can be aggressive and play violent games. The socialization of manhood in our general public begins as early as the main phases of the first stages. The journey of masculinity have been very difficult for many man in America because society expects things that men can't handle. An aspect that is expected from men is that they have to be educated and a good father. In Lahiri, Jhumpa "A choice of Accommodations" Amit is a man who married Megan. • 17. Masculinity : Masculinity And Masculinity Essay The following phrase are a string of words that no heterosexual man wants to hear, "You're acting like a girl!" To a straight or heterosexual man those words would be a shot to his manhood. To most men and boys in western society, masculinity is what separate the men from the women and the boys from the girls. However, what is masculinity and why do most men and boys' try so hard to guard theirs? My understanding of masculinity, and as technically defined, is having customary qualities attributed to or usually applicable to a male. My position is that society encourages hegemonic masculinity thus forming basis for males to exhibit traditional masculine qualities to fit in, most women prefer men with these traditional masculine characteristics or qualities, and men try to assert their masculinity so they are not considered feminine. In the next few paragraphs, I will to take you on a journey on why masculinity is important to the communication of gender identity from a heterosexual point of view. Origin To understand the masculinity you must know of its etymology. As etymonline.com explains it, the term masculinity or more specifically "masculine" an adjective originated from the mid–14th century defined as "belonging to the male grammatical gender." In the late 14th century meaning "of men, male," from Old French term masculin "of the male sex" (12th century), from Latin masculinus "male, of masculine gender," from masculus "male, masculine; worthy of a man," diminutive of ... • 19. Masculinity Analysis Masculinity to the extent the term can be briefly defined at all, is simultaneously a place in gender relations, the practices through which men and women engage that place in gender and the effects of these practices in bodily experience, personality and culture." (Connell 1995:72) Connell (2000) argued that masculinities are multiple, thus differ from place to place, Connell advances by suggesting that masculinities are socially constructed, therefore cannot be fixed. This shows the complexity of what masculinity is, thus how can masculinity be in crisis if there is no fixed meaning. Realisation that masculinities are being socially constructed can be dated back to the psychoanalysis work of Freud, thus the social–psychological concept, which is the sex role (Connell,2001) the "male sex role". Connell (2001) argued that the sex role, emphasises the correct norms and roles for male behaviour. West and Zimmerman (1987) "Doing gender" explains that masculinity is not something that boys and men have happen to them, rather, it is something that they do, therefore through socialisation. Academics such as clatterbaugh (1998), argue that the term masculinity is itself an issue, as he suggests there are seven ways in which masculinity can be used. Clatterbaugh (1998) suggests that one of these is the cultural norms and beliefs and what masculine should be, this is advanced by Flood (2002). • 21. Hegemonic Masculinity : Masculinity And Masculinity What is hegemonic masculinity? What are the merits and shortcomings of this concept? In Connell's original conception, hegemonic masculinity can be understood as 'the pattern of practice that allowed men's dominance over women' (1987). Hegemonic masculinity is the exclusive masculinity of which only a few exhibit. The majority of men in fact experience complicit masculinity, allowing them to dominate in the patriarchal system in which it created. Connell (1987) believed it was this that created a social system, in which masculinity was dominant over femininity. Hegemonic masculinity was also dominant over other forms of masculinity experienced by men from various class, racial or sexual backgrounds. Throughout this essay, I first aim to explain hegemonic masculinity in its original concept, as this is vital when examining the studies and theorisations of masculinity that followed RW Connell's original framework. This will lead to an analysis of its reformulation in 2005 and an explanation of how the values of the concept, that were retained have been demonstrated in studies of masculinities in various institutions. The critiques the concept faced will then be discussed in relation to its reformulation. Finally, the failure of Connell to underestimate the importance of different masculinities in his original conception will be examined. The use of different masculinities has highlighted the need for men to come away from behaviours such as violence and homophobia. It is in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 25. Definition Of Masculinity In the United States, there is no social tragedy more impactful than how society forces the males of its population to express themselves through the values of masculinity. Society divides males and females into two separate social classes and all the divided must follow the strict values connected to their class. For women, they must face the oppression of femininity, which teaches them to express themselves as lesser than men. Conversely, men live by the dominance based values of masculinity, a set of ideals that teach them that seeking power, in action and expression, is all that matters. The practice of forcing males to express only toxic masculinity has led to an American society dominated by men, leaving women as their target for domination. Consequently, though the ideals of masculinity serve as the mantra for men for it allows them to dominate, those values also cost men their humanity. In her book, We Should All be Feminists, Chimamanda Adichie proclaims, "We teach boys to be afraid of fear, of weakness, of vulnerability. We teach them to mask their true selves, because they have to be a hard man" (Adichie 26). Adichie also describes the relationship between a man and his masculinity as a tight cage that keeps a man's image of expression confined to ideal masculinity. Adichie's metaphor for masculinity is similar to activist Tony Porter's description of masculinity in the form of the "man box," a strict set of values that traps men inside its stereotypes. Both ... Machismo is defined as a strong sense of masculine pride, often exhibited by Latino men. In Latino culture in the United States, machismo is not only accepted, but always expected. In any study that investigates the Latino group, machismo is a subject that cannot be left behind. In Latin American culture, machismo is seen as a socio– psychological behavior through which the Latino males exhibit an overbearing attitude to anyone in a position he sees as inferior to his, demanding total subservience. Even though Machismo has been defined with an extremely negative connotation, macho can also be seen as a caring and responsible person within the traditional Latino culture. The negative connotations that have been attributed to Machismo are aggressiveness, womanizing, emotional insensitivity and physical strength. Ethnographic studies have revealed that as a result of machismo, Latino men tend to distance themselves from homosexuals, who they perceive as a big threat to theory sexuality, physical dominance and personal safety. This paper discusses Machismo among Latino Americans in the modern society and how it shapes the social constructs within which they live. It will discuss how machismo shapes gay men and how they build cultural capital in order to negotiate through life. The paper will also discuss the effects of machismo on ... There is a lack of evolution and a negative body image being represented with Disney. There is a high criteria in which every masculine character has to obtain. • 31. The Importance Of Masculinity "Masculinity is not something given to you, but something you gain. And you gain it by winning small battles with honor," (Norman Mailer). Masculinity holds a different meaning for everybody. For some people it means being a male, but for others it holds a deeper meaning. For example, my dad believes that in order to have masculinity he must be able to fix everything. He takes on tasks having to do with landscaping, plumbing, lighting, and even interior design; most of the time, he says something along the lines of "I can fix that in a minute" or "I've just got to go get the supplies." He then waits until my mom gets a professional to come do the task, and he claims that "we did not give him enough time to get it done." My dad, along with my other male friends, feels that since he is a male he needs to prove his masculinity by putting on the act of a handyman. My father went to school at Johnson and Wales University for a degree in criminal justice. Getting a bachelor's degree in criminal justice does not teach one how to fix the caulk in a bathtub; in spite of that, my father attempted this task. A couple of weeks ago, I realized that the caulk in my shower had begun to deteriorate. I informed my dad that I thought it needed to be repaired and suggested he call a plumber. His response went a little bit like this "Why do I need a plumber? That's an easy fix! All I have to do is..." He then proceeded to explain to me how he believed one would fix the caulk in a shower. Masculinity is usually described as being strong, manly, or dominate. It is also used when someone is describing men and how masculine they are. Many people use the word "masculine" to describe a man and put them into a category if they see that he fits. Many people believe that boys should not be brought up by punishing them if they did not do something masculine. They should be treated normal and not have to be terrified to be not masculine. Boys should be brought up the way that does not force them to be something they do not want to be. Germaine Greer wrote an essay called "Masculinity," which is about how people think how masculinity is a way to show it off. She also talks about how they shape males into being masculine. In Micheal Kaufman essay, "Men, Feminism, and Mens Contradictory Experiences of Power," he says that men should not be "trained" to be masculine it should come natural and not have consequences if not done right. He also talks about how feminism is impacting masculinity and how men are supporting to help women with the problems they have in society. Both authors make two different points about how masculinity should be taught, but Kaufman's idea is more effective in the 21st century; it allows the young men to be able to figure out their masculinity by their selves. In the film, they examine the cause and effect of male gender–policing in our society. Through personal anecdotes and expert testimony, the film sheds light on the painful cost of masculinity in America. They play an important role for transgender people who are expected to look a certain way in order to pass as their gender from others (Schilt, 2006). Schilt mentions that it's extremely problematic for transgender men when it comes to looks because sometimes their bodies do not match with the masculinity traits of what the society expects. Peralta (2007) includes another important quote from Connel and Messerschmidt and Messer support– "body–reflexive practice" where the body is seen as both an active agent and as an object of practice used to receive and produce gender differences" (p. 743). The body is important, it is what categorizes male and female based on their physical appearance It is the image display of gender, a person wants to portray them as either male or female. Many transgender males are able to pass as men by appearance cues like their hairstyle, clothes, and mannerisms without testosterones (Schilt, 2006). But there a lot of times when trans men who do not have facial hair, or a visible stubble and are often mistaken as young boys. Gender, Masculinity, And The Hegemonic View Of Masculinity Intro "Masc for masc" (masculine looking for masculine) and "straight acting" (not being seen as a stereotype and being able to be excepted by heterosexual men) are terms used by Gay men to classify the type of man they are looking for in a partner; actively rejecting and devaluing femininity and upholding the hegemonic view of masculinity. Therefor I am researching the "how do gay and straight Latinos construct their masculinity?" Straight men deem anything feminine as less than, thus gay men are ousted. This ousting of gay men is a byproduct of heterosexism in which a men only date women and vice versa, thus gay men are seen as effeminate for the sole reason of dating other men. In an attempt to reclaim their lost masculinity gay men are rejecting effeminate men in an attempt to be seen as "one of the good gays". The traits of reclaiming what gay Latinos feel is lost is strongly tied to femiphobia, internalized homophobia, and toxic masculinity. Gay men want to be seen as "normal" and "just one of the guys" at the cost of their fellow gay men's humanity and manhood. Masculinity in the Media Masculinity in Media This research looks at the association of masculinity with violence, racism, power and the objectification of women, which has been around since early civilization. This study also shows how these concepts are still evident today in the media. Masculinity in the media is portrayed as muscular, violent, angry, aggressive, dominant, and warrior like. The rhetoric in media, as it relates to masculinity, has influenced the amount of violence in the world. The association between violence and masculinity is relevant to communications because the portrayals of masculinity in the media led me to become a violent, and angry teenager. • 49. Hegemonic Masculinity In a world of constant dichotomies, there is always a debate of what is right and wrong, which creates division amongst political and societal lines. The fixed binary concept of gender has come under scrutiny as it creates stereotypical views on the behaviors of a man and woman, in the aspects of what really defines masculinity and femininity. However, it seems to be that, not only can gender be fluid but the behaviors associated with "men and women" can fall within a continuum of gender performances. It is through one's actions, that gender identity is expressed and they can come in a range from mild to extreme behaviors, the latter being the strict boundaries on the way one should be acting in society. This idea being that women should be ladylike and men should be strictly masculine. Hegemonic masculinity is constantly reaffirmed and challenged by men across cultures, in some places it can create aspects of toxic masculinity, while in others, men try to offer a softer side of this defined behavior. Toxic masculinity depicts the extreme conformity of traditionally male characteristics, which can create harmful societal effects as men try to overly showcase these "toxic" masculine norms. Building on Lynch 's (2009) claim that hegemonic masculinity is "toxic to both the men and women left in its wake" this essay aims to explore the relationship between hegemonic masculinity and violence. Placing a specific focus on acts of intimate partner violence and mass shootings, and exploring the works of Lynch (2009), Keith (2011), Baugher, & Gazmararian (2015), Kimmel, Hearn, & Connell (2004), Reidy, Berke, Gentile, & Zeichner (2014) and, Katz, Young, Earp, & Jhally (1999 & 2013), this essay seeks to argue that the strict regulation of masculinity as well as a history of encouraging male violence in our society has created a dangerous and hostile climate for both men and women to exist in. Masculinity is a social construct based on a hierarchical system of gendered difference and dominance. It is used to assume a primal and essential difference between male bodies and female bodies, through a binary organisational system that assigns physical, emotional, and behavioural characteristics to people according to what is regarded as masculine and feminine. • 53. The Masculinity Of Women 's Masculinity Men often receive harsher punishment for breaking gender roles and this may explain why men are more likely to reaffirm masculinity than women are to reaffirm femininity. In a similar study done by Robinson et al in 2001, participants were told that other members of the same–sex could withstand a pain pressor task for a particular amount of time. Some participants were told others members of the same–sex typically withstood the pain task for 30 seconds, while other participants were told that members of the same–sex could withstand the pain for about 90 seconds. A final control group was given no expectations about the pain task. After treatment, each group performed the pain pressor task and was asked to report feelings of pain. Robinson found that women reported more pain sensitivity and lower tolerance than men in the control group. These findings are consistent with other pain tolerance tests in that women had higher ratings of pain. Interestingly, women and men responded similarly to pain when expectations about pain tolerance were provided before the pain pressor task (Robinson et al., 2001). It would seem that when men and women are given a clear definitions of gender norms, they are likely to conform to these definitions. When no definitions of gender norms are provided, women and men will respond to pain in ways they have been previously socialized. Throughout the play, we see a change in the way characters reveal their innermost feelings towards certain situations. Every character wants to be a hero or wants to be the one everyone fears and looks up to. Personally, I think chivalry and heroism play a very important role for being a man in any day in time. Both King Duncan and Macbeth are seen as chivalric but in different ways. With chivalry being a quality of manliness, such is brought on by how one can handle their true emotions and actions not only with themselves but with others. Furthermore, the most problematic character of chivalry is seen to be Macbeth. As the play grows strong, Macbeth was once seen to be a "manly man" with strong moral and stable values. As seen early on in the meeting with King Duncan, Duncan awards Macbeth as being the "Worthy Cawdor" for being so chivalric in battle (I. vi. 34–58). Once he is convinced to murder Duncan and has his mindset changed by his spouse, Macbeth starts to fall. Chivalry is a trait or quality in which a man must earn and learn to control, but seeing how much negative chivalry changed Macbeth really resembles the magnitude of how much a man can be unstable. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Giving up the idea of boy will be boys, especially in the case of violence is key to resolving some of the issues. That is, when two boys are hitting each other this is a violent act, and they should be taught that it is not the answer. As well, associating boys with words such as power, dominance, aggression and guns, should be changed because it will have boys feel as though they have to be a certain way to be a real man and that includes aggressive behaviours. Another solution to ending violence in masculinity would be to stop comparing it to femininity. As the narrator in Tough Guise 2 reiterated, if a man gives the appearance of being kind and gentle he should not be referred to as a 'pussy' or a 'fag'; this type of behaviour not only instills homophobia but also proves more than anything that kindness is should be seen as a womanly ... • 61. Masculinity In Beowulf Masculinity Past vs. Present Did you know there is a great controversy with today's society, putting men over women? It is sparking debates across the world on why men are thought to be stronger and be able to do more activities than women. There is an ongoing debate between men and women on equality. Beowulf and contemporary culture assert their masculinity through physical strength, financial wealth, honor, perseverance, reputation, and intelligence. In Beowulf's Society, physical strength was thought of a man who could conquer anything that he would be faced with, such as a monster like Grendel. Another example from Beowulf, is when he says to Unferth "I was the strongest swimmer of all" (Heaney 534). This shows that Beowulf was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another important thing is talking about how financial wealth plays a role in masculinity. Financial wealth played a vital role in Beowulf's society, such as when Shield Sheafson had all of that treasure buried with him when he died, "Far–fetched treasures were piled upon him, and precious gear" (Heaney 36–37). In Biblical times, masculinity was also associated with having wealth in order to support his household, "But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever." (New International Version, 1 Tim. 5.8). Now in today's culture, men are associated with having the most money in the household. This is most definitely true, because there have been studies that show there is a wage gap between men and women, "2016, women working full time in the United States typically were paid just 80 percent of what men were paid, a gap of 20 percent" (Miller, "The Simple Truth about the Gender Pay Gap"). There is a vast difference between Beowulf's culture and ours, it's the fact that women now pursue a higher education to achieve a more successful life than just letting a man making more money stop them and women also work outside of the house now, "Women are graduating from college and attending graduate schools at higher rates than men" (Adamczyk 2016). Overall, men being put in charge of money have changed in a great deal over the years, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 63. Toxic Masculinity Few would argue against the notion that society has unrealistic and unfair expectations of women. However, little time seems to be spent talking about harmful societal expectations of men, specifically those associated with toxic masculinity. Toxic masculinity is when men feel the need to prove their masculinity by upholding traditional masculine values and behaviors in a way that is detrimental to themselves and others. These behaviors traditionally associated with men include a need to prove one's strength over others, blocking out emotional attachments, asserting dominance over others, and denying traditionally feminine behavior, such as crying and showing emotional weakness (Hess). Michael Omi's article "In Living Color: Race and American Culture" describes how the media has had a large role in perpetuating racial stereotypes, but all his arguments can very well be related to gender stereotype. Movies that glorifies toxic masculinity will inevitably legitimize its behaviors to the public. Therefore, media that critiques stereotypes is important to shifting audience opinions. Despite being a comedy film about a team of superheroes fighting aliens threatening the universe, the 2017 Marvel film Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 tackles this subject of toxic masculinity through essentially all of its male characters. In particular, the movie's protagonist, Peter, is the focal point of this commentary. Peter's mother died when he was young and his father was absent his entire ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 65. Masculinity In Paul Theroux's essay "being a Man" Theroux describes the detrimental effects of gender roles on the individual, specifically focusing on males and their quest for masculinity. "Even the expression 'Be a man!' strikes me as insulting and abusive. It means: Be stupid, be unfeeling, obedient, soldierly, and stop thinking." Theroux continues by describing society's idea of manliness as destructive. A male's desire to be "manly" fuels anti feministic beliefs, and without disposing of this traditional idea of manliness, males are doomed to repeat a cycle of insecurity and dependence on others to boost their own egos. Theroux builds on the idea of the grotesque mature of manhood in America by describing how masculinity "Denies men the natural friendship of women." He uses his own experiences in order to expand on this point. Theroux claims that at the age where he craved the attention of girls, he was sent off to boy's cam. Furthermore, Theroux blames sports for teaching boys to forsake ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... On the contrary, he describes it as "an unmerciful and punishing burden." While women have to deal with a variety of problems, men also have to deal with their own set of problems and pressures placed on them, merely based on the fact that they're males. He closes with a justification for men objecting feminism, "And this is also why men often object to feminism, but are afraid to explain why: of course women have justified grievance, but most men believe– and with reason– that their lives are just as bad." This statement is a critical point in the essay because it drives home the idea that both men and women have their own set of grievances.. However, the issues women face are much more prominent, therefore the problems that men face are overshadowed by the problems that women face. While Theroux acknowledges the struggle of women, he wants to shatter the illusion that men live carefree ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 67. Toxic Masculinity : Substance Masculinity As a boy grows into a man he faces the ever–raising mountain of masculinity. In regards to the occurrence, he finally reaches maturity he has no choice but in order to fight to retain his measly sense of manhood. He is not allowed to act feminine or else he's not man enough, he can't show his emotions, he has to hide that he can do anything a woman can do sans give birth. Boys grow up being told they are not allowed to cry and that they are supposed to be tough, that they are not able to be like girls and in the event that they are then they are not real boys. This concept is known as toxic masculinity, some people are not aware that men are being forced to suppress their emotions or even that toxic masculinity should be a topic that is ... Porter's anecdote is proof that men are expected to be strong and masculine in every situation; they must remain unresponsive and unemotional no matter how what they are experiencing or else they will be thought to be like a woman. Dowd further imbeds this notion in her article with the statement that men should not be like women or embrace behaviors associated with women – [this] discourages men from developing female–associated qualities such as caring, and emotional responsiveness and expression (Dowd). Porter even states that he had asked a young boy how he would feel in the event that he were to be told that he acted like a girl the boy responded by means of saying "that it would destroy him" (A Call To Men). Furthermore, even when men have been incredibly ensnared into their mental problems they will refuse to seek out therapy. Kupers insinuates that since therapy is a way in order to fix a weakness, men see seeking out a therapist as admitting that they have a need in order to get help. In the event that a man can't handle his own problems then he must be riddled with weaknesses (Kupers). Being a man should entail getting ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 69. Masculinity And Masculinity, By Michael Kimmel Essay In western culture, men are often subject to extreme methods of proving their masculinity, and to reinforce what it truly means to be a man. Michael Kimmel, famous sociologist said, "Masculinity is the relentless repudiation of the feminine" (Kimmel, 2015), which not only reflects how men think about themselves but how North Americans as an entire culture think about masculinity and manhood. The following pages will be centered on issues of the lens of masculinity in contexts such as the sphere of education, the predominance and dependence of social relationships, and most importantly – fatherhood, which will be of a larger focus as the male enters adulthood. As a child, women and men are predominantly on the same page. With the exception of their shared interests and activities. As a child grows up, the classroom setting starts to highlight the differences between both boys and girls. Most often, education is catered towards girls and the learning styles that girls flourish in (Vincent & Ball, 2007). Girls outperform boys in almost every subject when they are elementary school age (Vincent & Ball, 2007) because in the classroom, it is taught that the qualities with being a good student are most often synonymous with being a good girl, and here is where you can see a dichotomy begin to occur (Vincent & Ball, 2007). Boys are conditioned from the beginning to understand that being a man, and being masculine is the polar opposite of what it means to be feminine. Early ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 71. Masculinity Theory Google defines masculinity as a possession of qualities traditionally associated with men, using, "handsome, muscled, and driven, he's a prime example of masculinity" as their example. Although this definition of masculinity is common, it is undeveloped and exclusive to other forms of masculinity. Sociologists such as Raewyn Connell, Eric Anderson and Michael Kimmel have formed their own theories and definitions of masculinity. In this course, we have read an excerpt from Eric Anderson's, Inclusive Masculinities, Raewyn Connell's, Masculinities and Gender; In World Perspectives, and Michael Kimmel's book, Manhood in America; A Cultural History to answer questions about the social construction of masculinity, how it is performed, how it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In his book, Inclusive Masculinities; The Changing Nature of Masculinities, Anderson analyzes homophobia, the development of homohysteria ("homosexually–panicked culture in which suspicion [of homosexuality] permeates") and the change in the dynamics of male relationships. Anderson also analyzes Connell's HMT and suggest that while her theory may have been a useful way of understanding masculinities in the late 1900's, masculinity is evolving. Anderson explains how the HMT suggests that masculinity ascribed, constant and one has little to no chances of climbing the gender hierarchy. After doing research on athletes and college students and realizing that HMT could not account for the relationship dynamics of these young men, Anderson developed an opposing theory–the inclusion theory. The inclusion theory suggests that male relationships are evolving and that social stigmas towards homosexuality are decreasing as well as misogynistic views/opinions over time. Anderson believes that, although some may continue to hold conservative beliefs about masculinity, there is a movement among younger generations that is more accepting and encouraging of fluid presentations of masculinity. Michael Kimmel's, Manhood in America; A Cultural History, traces masculinity over time, starting in colonial times to present day. • 73. Hegemonic Masculinity : Masculinity And Masculinity Multiple Masculinities The certain qualities a man processes plays into how masculine he is rated to be. The way he portrays himself in his looks, actions and everyday life paints a bigger picture for the type of male he is. Connell argues that hegemonic masculinity is the ultimate goal that men strive for. Hegemonic masculinity is the idea of men being powerful, strong and dominant. Not many people actually live up to this theory, but nearly all men strive to achieve it. Marginalized masculinity and subordinated masculinity branch off of hegemonic masculinity. Marginalized masculinity is the idea that structural factors such as race or economic class compose difficulties on reaching the goal of hegemonic masculinity. Subordinated masculinity correlates specifically to homosexual men. Although possessing feminine personality traits, these men can earn "masculinity insurance" if they portray themselves as hegemonic with characteristics such as athleticism or leadership. Connell also mentions, "emphasized femininity" as the female's version of hegemonic masculinity. Emphasized femininity is the exaggeration of female characteristics. It is described as the idea that women should accommodate to men's wants and needs. Each of these masculinity ideologies fit within individual, interactional or structural levels of analysis. According to lecture, the individual level of analysis has to do with what is within a person's gender, whether it is biological or psychological. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 75. Masculinity In 'The Terminator' What defines masculinity is the traits and values that are considered to characterise the male gender at any given time. Consequently, the definition of masculinity keeps changing as people change their views of what characteristics a man should require. The biggest influence of the definition of masculinity is media. It is where we receive information about what is "normal" and "cool". Films and television shows have a huge impact on how we view the world and they can alter our opinions on different topics. On that basis, Film and television play a big role in how we define masculinity. In this essay I will look at how gender is constructed in "The Terminator" and how cultural aspects influence the film. During the late 20th century medias association to defining masculinity became more visible. It was reflecting the current values of masculinity as well as to help shape it into what it would become in the future. American values in the 1970's rapidly changed due to a variety of new political movements. Two of these had a great deal of impact on the ideals of masculinity. Men's Liberty Movement and the second wave of feminism helped blur the lines between masculinity and femininity. During the 70s various films and TV shows featured strong, intelligent females that where significant to the storyline and often ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 77. Masculinity : Masculinity And Masculinity Masculinity At its Manliest In both Douglas Schrock and Michael Schwalbe's Men, Masculinity, and Manhood Acts and Sharon Bird's Welcome to the Mens's Club, we see compelling arguments for the treatments on the categories of "masculinity." By comparing both articles, the significant similarities and differences between the two variations can be identified. In doing so, the function of "masculinity" in society, according to each author, can also be seen. Using the "masculine" Kristoff in Disney's film Frozen, these categories may be challenged to show which author might have the better approach. As far as definitions of masculinity from both authors, a significant similarity can be seen. For Schrock and Schwalbe, masculinity is seen as "form of collective male practice that has as its effect the subordination of women." In other words, masculinity has a direct correlation to power dominance over women. In Bird's article she also states that hegemonic masculinity maintains "practices that institutionalize men's dominance over women." Therefore, these articles are in agreement with each other when speaking on the definition of masculinity. However, a significant difference can be seen in each author's treatment in the category of "masculinity." Bird's article breaks masculinity into three components that include emotional detachment, competitiveness, and sexual objectification of women. These three ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
