Priming Race in Biracial Observers Affects Visual Search for Black and White Faces
Introduction:
In this paper, we see how priming can be used as an experimental aid and to what extent it can
influence the subjects. Chiao, Heck, Nakayama, and Ambady (1) consider the notion of whether
priming a particular racial identity in a mixed–race individual (specifically Black and White mix)
would influence the individual's ability to search for White or Black faces.
Previous Research forms new Experimental Hypothesis:
The authors' interest in the application of priming to visual perception stems from a lack of
empirical research done in this particular field. Priming a certain social identity (race, gender, age,
or occupation) and its ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Raters used a Likert scale from 1 (not at all) to 7 (very much), and they weren't treated blind (not
told the racial identity of the authors or their mother or father).
Results:
The raters came to the conclusion that White–primed biracials are more likely than Black–primed
biracials to be thinking about their White identity after writing the essay about their chosen parent's
ethnicity. Rates found that Black–primed biracials are likely to be thinking of their Black identity
than White–primed biracials. These results showed that the priming was effective in priming
biracials to identify more with one of their races.
The visual search results were based on mean search times. Outliers and incorrect responses from
the averages were excluded to maintain the consistency of the results. Building on previous
research, overall participants demonstrated a search advantage for Black faces. This Black–target
advantage was larger for Black than for White participants. The results of the biracial participants
most affected their original hypothesis (it was what was developed by the authors on top of
previously existing data). Black–primed biracials and White–primed biracials different significantly
in the magnitude of their search advantage for Black over White targets, and the

PREVALENCE OF NON STRABISMIC VERGENCE DYSFUNCTIONS IN AN ORTHOPTIC
CLNIC
INTRODUCTION
In the preceding generations, fine distance visual acuity and stereoscopic vision were of paramount
importance, since the survival depended absolutely on the capability to farm, hunt and fish. But
today, the emphasis has shifted virtually from distance visual functions to two dimensional near
visual tasks such as desk work, reading, computer usage etc.The presence of non strabismic
binocular dysfunctions such as accommodative and vergence anomalies make it difficult for the
visual system to perform these kind of activities with accuracy and effortlessness. When persons,
who are in short of suitable accommodative and vergence amplitudes, are involved ... Show more

In a clinical study to determine the presence and clinical implications of the general binocular
dysfunctions in a population of university students, Esteban Porcar et al 4 found a prevalence of
32.3 % of non strabismic binocular anomalies.
To achieve as estimate of the population prevalence of vergence dysfunctions, we have
systematically reviewed the previous studies related to this. So this study was designed to estimate
the prevalence of vergence dysfunctions in an orthoptic clinic set up and also to set up well defined
diagnostic criteria for all the vergence anomalies.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
755 Patients above the age of seven years presented consecutively to the orthoptics clinic of Sankara
Nethralaya, Chennai between March 2010 and February 2011 was considered for this retrospective
cohort study based on the inclusion and the exclusion criteria with the help of Medical Record
Department and Electronic Medical Record (EMR) search engine.
The inclusion criteria used were age more than or equal to seven years, distance best corrected
visual acuity of > 6/9 in both the eyes, near best corrected visual acuity of N6 @ 30–40 cm,
adequate sensory fusion with worth four dot test for distance as well as for near, Random Dot stereo

Sylvia Taylor Biography
Sylvia Taylor is an artist/collector who resides in the Valley Arts District in Orange, NJ. Inspired by
the burgeoning craft movement of the 1970s, Sylvia attended California College of Arts and Crafts
and studied fiber arts, moving into jewelry and metal work later on. Having collected crafts for
many years, she started collecting artwork because she was surrounded by so many amazing artists.
The first painting in her collection was by an artist who shared her Norwegian heritage and acquired
by trading her studio jewelry for the painting. Finding herself more drawn to Abstract
Expressionism and contemporary art over time, today Sylvia focuses her collection on non–
representational art, often with elements of texture or found objects.

Fran admired and collected other artist's work for her home, but also as part of her trove of infinite
objects that often made their way into her art. From the mad jumble of countless boxes and bags in
her studio came often playful "bricolage" works of beauty, humor and imagination. She taught for
many years at the New Jersey Center for the Visual Arts, the Newark Museum and was actively
teaching until just weeks before her death last year. An award–winning artist, she exhibited at the
Museum of Modern Art, the Smithsonian, Victoria and Albert Museum, and in galleries throughout
New Jersey. She began her eight–decade career as a fashion designer before moving into painting,
printmaking, found art sculpture, book and paper making, and other multi–media arts. Fran studied
art at the American School of Fine Arts, Newark School of Fine Arts, and Fairleigh Dickinson

Eye Health And Vision : Macular Degeneration
KIRANDEEP KAUR PROF.DR. TOBI ABRAMSON
HSCI 410 F01 OCTOBER 23rd, 2016
PROJECT: EYE HEALTH AND VISION
Macular Degeneration is depreciation of the central portion of the retina, which records the images
being sent by an eye and is located on the inside back layer of the eye. Retina sends images via the
optic nerve from the eye to the brain. Macula is another name for retina's central portion and is
responsible for focusing central vision in the eye. This controls person's capability to read, drive a
ca, recognizes faces or colors. As per one of the article Macular degenerations have said to be the
leading cause of vision loss, which affects more than 10 million Americans– more than cataracts and
glaucoma. It is one of the incurable eye disease. Dry and wet are two types of Macular degeneration.
It is being researched that 85% to 90% are dry cases and 10–15% are the wet cases of Macular
degeneration. Age related Macular degeneration(AMD) consists of three stages. In early AMD stage
one does not experience vision loss. In Intermediate AMD stage there is some vision loss, but no
noticeable symptoms. Late AMD is more sever with vision loss being noticeable. According to one
of the article Age related macular degeneration is a pathological change in the central portion of the
retina. Early AMD, clinical signs of retinal disease are detected on routine examination, but

Understanding Of Mpm And Measuring Improvement Essay
RESEARCH PROPOSAL Study objective: Understanding of MPM and measuring improvement in
store sales . INTRODUCTION Retail enterprise is a kind of commercial enterprise with high level
of competition. The success of retail business depends on how fast can a retailer recognize consumer
behavior and buying pattern. Retail business must focus on the factor affecting consumer buying
pattern and elements that shifts customers buying decision. Store atmospheric attributes (which
include shade, lighting fixtures, income personnel, music and so on) shape the general context
within which shoppers make decisions of store selection and patronage. Many of the previous
research on retail environment suggests that such attributes affect the image of the store. Retailers
comprehend the significance of such attributes and systematically attempt to avail of an atmosphere,
inclusive of suitable colors, music and so on that will attract their target customers. Further,
purchase decision–making has emerge as complicated task due to the inseparability of product and
services offered in retail outlets. Retail store floor planning is a complicated task. The essential
objective is to maximize sales with customer satisfaction and minimize overall prices. Many factors
affect the store floor planning, like the arrival pattern of clients, design of the building, required
service level, merchandise mix, adjacency requirements and lot more. Store layout can have an
effect on client's perceptions of a

Visual Art Plan By Otto Dix And James Gleeson
Visual art Plan
Artists all around the world have used metaphor in their pieces of work to convey meaning. "A
figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an object or action to which it is not literally
applicable." Most if not all pieces of art you can see in a museum or out on the street have remanets
of metaphor beneath them. Artists use metaphor in their work to tell a story or a time period or in
this case meaning. As the old saying goes a picture is worth a thousand words. The artist distorts the
image to the way he or she wants to see it or would want others to see it. For example, Otto Dix and
James Gleeson are artists that are known for having and using metaphor and spirituality in their
pieces of work. Otto Dix has ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Otto Dix was a great artist. His paintings were very strong with spirituality and metaphor this was
because he served in the first world war. Many of his paintings were of the first wold war because
Dix volunteered and became a machine gunner which exposed him to see death daily. Through his
experiences in the war he gained a lot of knowledge and saw a lot of things. One of his pieces stood
out to me the most. That piece was the wounded soldier. In this picture I can see a muddy ground
with blood splattered everywhere. The ground and the soldier almost looks like he is decaying. The
soldiers face has an expression of confusion and elements of fear across him. Given his mouth is
wide open it looks like he is in enormous amounts of pain and looks like he is screaming. This could
be the face of a person going through their last seconds before they die or get shot. His hand is
squeezing his heart like he got shot in the area. His helmet seems to be dirty and bloody as almost
like he has been here for a long time.
The work has been put together very well according to the elements and principles of art. The lines
in the art work are very bold and revealing. The lines are clearly outlining the wounded soldier and
what is movements and actions are at the current time of him being painted. The colour of this art
work is in black and white but even though it is in black and white Dix has done a good job of
telling us what things are

A Life of Darkness; Major Causes of Blindness Every five seconds, someone in the world goes
blind. Throughout the world today, there are an estimated 39 million people who are considered
legally blind. According to the Merriam–Webster dictionary, blind is defined as being sightless or
unable to see. The term blindness can also be used to describe the other 285 million people
worldwide who are considered to be visually impaired. While these people may not be considered
completely blind, they still need a lot of help perceiving images. Even with glasses or medical
surgery, people who are recognized as visually impaired still cannot see well. Visual impairment

A cataract scatters light as it passes through the lens, which stops a defined image from reaching the
retina of the eye. Unlike a normal eye that has light passing through the transparent lens, a cataract
causes the lens to be hazy. As a result, the image striking the retina will be blurry and the vision
becomes emulsified. The range of visual impairment depends on how cloudy the lens is. According
to MedicineNet.com, the extent of the visual disturbance is dependent upon the degree of cloudiness
of the lens (Dahl, Sheil, 2014). Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness worldwide and are
especially common in older people. The protein that makes up the lens begins to cluster together
causing the clouding of the lens as people age. Over time, the cataract usually grows larger,
ultimately resulting in the lost of sight.
The second leading cause of blindness in the world is glaucoma. According to the Bulletin of the
World Health Organization, glaucoma is the general term for a group of similar diseases. In primary
open angle glaucoma, the channels that drain fluid within the eye become blocked, causing pressure
within the eye to rise, resulting in gradual loss of vision. There are very few symptoms so many
people do not realize they are losing their sight. The other type of glaucoma that leads to blindness is
known as angle closure glaucoma. Angle closure glaucoma is similar to open angle glaucoma, but
the effects are much more prevalent (Sharon

Biological Processing System: Understanding Color and Contrast
Introduction
While interacting with the world, human visual system is perhaps the first and foremost biological
process system that directly involves in detecting information. As Colin Ware (2013) noted in
Information Visualization, "We acquire more information through vision than through all of the
other senses combined". Hence, it is crucial for information designers to understand influential
factors which affect our visual system in order to optimize information visualization for users. With
visual sensory system acting as a signal detecting system, this paper intends to look at a variety of
perceptual elements of a particular case but mainly focuses on their visibility in terms of contrast
and color. More specifically, the paper will be examining these concepts as if the website is viewing

Howard Gardner And Gardner's Theory Of Multiple Intelligences
Numerous are growing interested in what makes them who they are, along with how exactly they fit
into society. In fact, a variety of concepts exist that individuals commonly apply to their own
identity. Aiding people, the ideas help explore who they truly are as well as help understand
themselves better. But at the same time, they can either be helpful and relate to you with your
identity, or do the complete opposite. Of the broad amount of concepts to the identification of
people, there are three that exist named Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligences, Adler's Birth
Order, as well as learning styles. Each person is unique in their own way, especially the outstanding
capabilities of their mind. For example, it is common to only know of the visual learning, auditory
learning, and kinesthetic learning aspects, but what people do not know is that the mind goes beyond
that (Lane). Developed by Howard Gardner exists the Multiple Intelligences, which consists of nine
different intelligences. Of all of the intelligences exists Verbal–linguistic, Logical–mathematical,
Spatial–visual, Bodily kinesthetic, Musical, Interpersonal, Intrapersonal, Naturalist, and Existential
(Howard Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligences). According to Gardner, each person has a
unique blend of capabilities and skills, which students could balance out their skills if they
discovered their strengths (Lane). Personally, I scored at 92% Naturalistic and 0% Bodily
Kinesthetic on the quiz,

Analysis Of Amanda Lohrey's Vertigo
Through distinctive images composers develop interest, drawing the responder in and thus providing
insight into the experiences of others. This is demonstrated in Amanda Lohrey's novella 'Vertigo' as
Luke and Anna find themselves in a new and disorientating environment as they attempt to build a
new life and in the 'The Red Tree' composed by Shaun Tan, through the nameless girl's journey as
she attempts to find herself and her place in the world. Meaning created by distinctive images
creates interest thus permitting the responder to gain a greater understanding on how the experiences
help shape one's self.

Despite an expanded outlook on the world, Luke and Anna find themselves in a place of vertigo as
they struggle to come to terms with the harsh world that is Garra Nulla. The metaphor "some days
she feels like a fly caught in an invisible web" establishes a visual of one who is confined by their
negative experiences, unable to escape, whereas the description of "an invisible web" depicts an
image of an unexpected challenge that has impacted on Anna's initially idealistic view of country
living. However, despite the couple's dislocation and the destructive yet regenerative bushfires an
overall feeling of hope at the end of the novella is reassuring. Lohrey delineates this through the
symbolisation of the black swans at the closing stage of the novella. "Look", she says, "the swans
are back." Representing a return to normality in their world as the re–emergence of the swans
metaphorically represents the return of hope. The omniscient narrator reveals Anna's inner dialogue
"Ah, she says so you are leaving us. So you are on your way at last. But it's okay, it's alright; yes,
she thinks, I am ready for this..." displaying that they are finally able to attain comfort over the grief
of losing their son. Despite Anna's and Luke's negative experiences, the responder attains a feeling
of reassurance as through the distinctive images created we observe a return to normality and
ultimately a positive feeling of

Lab Report On Search For Things On A Day
Julia Monaco
Cog Lab #1
Introduction: We use our attention to search for things on a day–to–day basis, whether complex or
basic. Items we are searching for are noticed easier when there are many of the same different items
(distractors) around the one we are searching for. It helps the item we are searching for stand out.
When there is more than one different, kind of distractor around the item (target) it makes it harder
for us to find to find it. Mackintosh (1975) states, in order to have selective attention we learn to
watch or ignore the stimuli depending on its relevance to what we are looking for. We also learn
"inverse relationship" between the different stimuli. If stimuli increase the other, stimuli will
decrease and vice versa. We use these ideas when we were looking for a certain stimulus and we
have to find it in different scenes of varied other stimuli (distractors). According to Treisman and
Gelade (1980), the theory tells us that attention has to be individually directed to each dependent
stimulus regardless of the distractions surrounding it. One stimulus has to be easily distinguishable
to be detected as different. In order to find the target crowded by the various distractors, we have to
make sure we specifically focus our attention on just finding that one stimulus and not the
distractors. According to Treisman (1982), when searching for the dependent stimulus in a scene
with other different stimuli, we scan the scene in groups rather than by each

Exploring The Possibilities Of Discovering The Neural...
Exploring the possibilities of discovering the neural correlates of visual consciousness
In the ongoing strive to better understand the mechanism of consciousness, the possibility of
discovering the neural correlates of consciousness (NCCs) is arguably the leading agenda in its
scientific research. Although the question of whether consciousness can be fully reduced to its
neural correlates remains debatable, it is still credible that whenever an appropriate brain process
occurs, the associated subjective experience follows (Chalmers, 2013). Thus, this essay will
demonstrate that it is plausible that the minimal brain processes necessary for a conscious percept
can be experimentally narrowed down to a smaller coalition of neurons. Understandably, the
complexity of the cortical system that is yet to be fully deciphered, along with the technological
difficulties in obtaining essential data has hindered the search for the NCCs and have lead some to
doubt the possibility of ever locating it (Fins & Plum, 2004). It is also likely that there are numerous
NCCs, each associated with different modalities, which complicates the task further (Chalmers,
2013). For the purpose of this essay, the possibilities of discovering the neural correlates of visual
consciousness are discussed in particular. This essay aims to define the foundational concepts of the
science of consciousness, outline the experimental projects in finding the neural correlates of visual
consciousness, and address

Visual Attention Paper
Vision is the most important sensory compared to other sensory modality therefore there is a wide
range of research carried out on vision. Visual attention is defined as a term that portrays how
individuals are able to change their view while attending to an image that is of a normal perspective
due to the neurones in the cortex (Carasco, 2011). It is often described as a focal point which is
situated with different locations in the region of space (Wright, 1998). Visual search requires
detecting a specific target as quickly as possible. For example, trying to find your car in a large car
park. By focusing our attention to the specific environment it improves our visual search of the
target (Keane et al., 2015). The speed of a visual search ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Conjunction feature search involves visual features of objects in the environment which are
processed together and does not depend on attention. However, the simple feature search requires
features to combine to form objects, It requires attention to bind the primitive features into
conjunctions. It is a slower process than conjunction search as it requires to scan the whole scene
which is therefore time consuming (Gelade et al., 1980). The hypothesis of the present study
predicts that the participants will react quicker to the simple feature condition compared to the
conjunction feature condition when presented with targets in different display sizes. Also, that the
display sizes would have a larger effect on the conjunction feature search compared to the simple

Clark's work does not reside in the spatial understanding of an object, it would now be accomplished
in temporality, and an experience in which the art object would lose is object–ness and become a
force affected by the world, distorting one's subjective and object–based realities. Yet the work
could still exist as an object, independent from the experience and those who approached it could
remain merely viewers of the object. This understanding led Clark to avoid "fetishization" of the
work as it resides in an institution and the work became focused on an event: an action that
transforms the work. It is important to state that the request of Lygia Clark's work to involve the
body as a primary element should not be mistaken with a request to simply manipulate the objects
presented, as was common with works presented at the time. In their letters, both Lygia Clark and
Hélio Oiticica insisted that their works differed from the others of their time. Even in our post–
modern art world, it still seems logical to create that distinction. As is common in current art, the
need for interactivity in the work requires that both the body manipulation the object and the object
itself, in a relational form, requires that both be considered art objects. Basically understood,
relationally based art defines the art object as the relation between the object

Art Analysis : Patssi Valdez And Bernard Buffet
Art is something that can be described and expressed in several different ways to communicate ideas
and emotions through visualizations. Through art we are able to see the world like never before. It
inspires and motivates us to be creative. We are able to think further and beyond. In addition, art
gives us the ability to understand what artists are trying to display and the messages they are trying
to convey through their works. Art can be found anywhere and created by anyone (Dewitte,
Larmann, and Shields 29–30). Patssi Valdez and Bernard Buffet are two artists that I found at the
University of Southern Mississippi Museum of Art. Patssi Valdez is an American Chicana artist born
in 1951 in Los Angeles, California. She is capable of many talents in different forms of media such
as performance and conceptual art, installations, murals, fashion design, collage, photography and
more ("Search Collections"). She attended Otis College of Art Design and received her B.F.A. in

Different Theories About Learning Styles Essay
Introduction Learning style is an individual 's unique approach to learning based on strengths,
weaknesses, and, preferences. Learning styles explains the concept that every person learns
differently. Assessments of learning style typically ask individuals to evaluate what sort of
information presentation they prefer, and, what kind of mental activity they find most engaging, and,
attractive for them. Theories about learning styles agree that all people can be classified according to
their style of learning. In this paper different theories about learning styles are reviewed briefly. At
the end, Gendlin experiential theory is reviewed in detail.

There is a model that use to classify some of the most common ways of individuals learning styles.
The name of this model is VARK. New Zealand teacher Neil D. Fleming was inventor of VARK

Vision and Blindsight Essay
Vision and Blindsight
Implications Regarding Consciousness
Vision–– receiving and interpreting light signals from the environment in order to form an image in
one's mind–– is an incredibly complex process. Somehow signals from photoreceptors located in the
eye are converted into the conscious experience of sight. Of all the aspects of vision, perhaps the
most difficult for us to comprehend scientifically is this notion of consciousness. Somehow the brain
interprets light waves hitting the retina so that we are visually aware of our surroundings. While the
mechanism of signal transduction from the photoreceptor through the visual cortex has been
extensively elucidated, science has difficulty dealing with the phenomena of consciousness ... Show

Patients tend to correctly identify shape, color, and motion of inputs. In a forced choice experiment,
where the subject is asked to identify certain features of a visual cue, the subject will perform much
better than chance even though they feel as if they are randomly guessing (2).
While head trauma or tumors often induce the "psychic" blindness of these patients, a model has
been developed in monkeys by removing all or part of the primary visual cortex. These monkeys are
able to respond to visual inputs. They can be trained to touch illuminated bulbs rather than unlit ones
and identify certain colors and patterns in order to obtain food. This phenomenon is believed to
parallel human blindsight because when trained to respond differently according to whether there is
a visual cue or not, these monkeys respond as if there were no cue when a visual input is presented
to the blind field (1). It is therefore believed that these animals are able to respond to and identify
features of a visual cue even though they do not report seeing it.
The phenomenon of blindsight has far reaching implications regarding consciousness, awareness
and the "I" function. These studies demonstrate that receiving and interpreting visual inputs is
independent of our awareness of that input. Does this imply that there is a separate mechanism of
"consciousness" which can be disengaged from our senses? Marcel proposes that this loss of visual
consciousness results from the

Visual Search Case Studies
1.) Visual Search – In this activity I participated in a classic psychological experiment that uses
visual search tasks to explore fundamental process of visual perception and attention. In general I
learned that selective attention filters enable us to make more automatic decisions about the stimuli
around us, including which items to pay attention to during a visual search. Also, since your brain is
always active and sees visual sights and sensory information, your mind copes by automatically
screening or filtering incoming sensory information to let in only what is most important.
Specifically, I learned that the first set of trials I did were the feature search part of the experience
and the second set of trials were the conjunction search part of the experience. What I learned about
my self after doing this activity is that I had a quick reaction time on the first set of trials as I was
asked to find a blue circle amid orange squares and circles. But, on the second set of trials my
reaction time was not as quick as it first was. On the second set of trials, I was asked to find the blue
circle amid blue squares and orange circles. I believe my reaction time was quicker on the first set of
trials due to the fact that I was just looking for the color blue among orange squares and circles, but
on the second set of trials I was looking for a blue circle among blue squares and orange squares.
Therefore, the blue squares were distractors from the blue circle and I was forced

Arts Appreciation 1301
Chapter 1 Quiz
1. Chapter One opens by describing the work of artist Cai Guo–Qiang. Gunpowder is an unusual
material to draw with and the sky is an unusual surface to draw on! What reasons does the artist give
for using gunpowder as his drawing material?
Cai Guo–Qiang wished to create beauty from something like gunpowder, which is originally
considered a force of destruction.
2. On page 3, the author (Sayre p.3) states: "Appreciating art is never just a question of accepting
visual stimuli, but also involves intelligently contemplating why and how works of art come to be
made and have meaning." What questions does the author suggest that you ask when viewing and
considering a work of art?

Chapter One selects works of art from a wide variety of cultures and times. What might you not
notice about Fig. 1–8, if you did not know that the Mugal ruler Akbar believed that "a synthesis of
the world's faiths would surpass the teachings of any of them."
If I didn't know that the Mugal ruler Akbar believed that "a synthesis of the world's faiths would
surpass the teaching of any of them" I wouldn't have noticed that in the painting Jahangir in Dabar
there is a variety of faces with different racial and ethnic features.
8. Artist Claude Monet In Fig.1–9, painted the changes that were occurring in Europe during the
Industrial Revolution. Many left their agrarian lives for jobs in the city. Monet captures an
ambiguity in his painting about the changing world. What might you paint to describe our changing
world?
I would attempt to capture how far and how fast our technology is changing and growing, and
maybe below I would try to combine it with the simplicity of people's lifestyles before all this
technology took over.
9. Would you like a coffin designed by Kane Kwei? If yes, what form might it take?
Yes, I might consider it. And if I do, I would like a coffin in shape of a tree with paintings of flowers
and birds all around it. 10. After viewing the works of architect Renzo Piano, what are his intentions
with the design of the Cultural Center in New Caledonia?

The Artist's Toolbox Analysis
To evaluate an artist's message, we must first examine the physical characteristics of the artwork.
The specific features that should be examined will vary depending on the form of art, but let us
consider paintings for this example. The angles of the lines, the colors used, the arrangement of the
figures, the size of the work, the amount and direction of the lighting, and numerous other physical
characteristics can provide critical clues both to the historical context of the painting and to the
artist's underlying message (Clevenger. Module 3, The Artist's Toolbox: The Elements of Visual Art,
p. 2). When combined with an understanding of the time period in which the painting was created,
the physical features can help us determine whether ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In reference to formal art instruction in schools, Smith claims that "[The purpose is] to help children
increase their capacity to create meaning and make sense of themselves and the world around them"
(qtd. in Epstein 38). It is evident by looking at popular entertainment that true art is not valued by
most of the younger members of our society. Popular music and television shows, if they contain
any messages at all, promote shallow, 'feel–good' truths at best, and anti–Biblical propaganda at
worst. As Christians, we must become aware of the deeper questions posed by real artwork. Once
we have a grasp of the questions being asked and have evaluated the suggested answers from the
perspective of a Christ–centered worldview, we should then expose our children to uplifting artwork
and discuss the value of the messages that those works express. I am not yet married, and thus I
recognize that the passage of time and new experiences may change the approach I now propose.
Nevertheless, I currently plan to expose my future children to fine literature, especially poetry, so
that they will be equipped to think critically and to appreciate beauty. With the knowledge that I
have gained from this class, I also will be able to discuss with my children both the meaning behind
artwork and the differences between works created in various time periods and cultures. I want to

There is a constant interaction between the physiological system in terms of visual information
processing and cognitive performance. It is conceivable that older drivers who suffer from poor
vision would ultimately have worse cognitive performance irrespective of the degree of age related
cognitive declines. In other words, declines in physiological performance exacerbate the effects of
aging on cognitive functioning. Brouwer (1993) contends that impairments that lie both on the level
of receptor–effector organs and on the level of cognitive functioning, particularly
4
attention, contribute to the problems older drivers encounter with the driving task.
For example, perceptual, cognitive, and motor declines affect an older driver's ability to merge with
traffic. On the perceptual level, older adults have difficulty seeing and determining the speed and
distance of the traffic they need to merge with. On the motor level, they have difficulty turning their
necks and looking back far enough to see that traffic. And, cognitively, they have difficulty
maintaining all the information needed to make a decision about joining the flow of traffic because
of declines in attention and working memory. When they eventually respond however, they are
slower to do so than the situation requires.
Clearly, cognitive performance is critical because driving requires the attentiveness of the individual
to the driving environment (Transportation Research

Visual Merchandise Guidelines For Retailers
Since approximately 90% of cues provided by an environment are digested through sight (Edwards

respects to their Visual Merchandise Guidelines. Continuously, consumers are opting to take their

Advantages and Disadvantage to being AArt Director
Michael Temple Professor Sigmon RWS 305 11 a.m. 14 October 2014 Need for Visual
Communication Art has been much more than just a hobby or a way of expressing ones feelings, it
was long before there was any proof of a verbal language; art was a key form of communication.
Artists create art to communicate ideas, thoughts, or feelings. They use a variety of methods such as
painting, sculpting, or illustration. Also an assortment of medians, including oils, watercolors,
acrylics, pastels, pencils, pen and ink, plaster, clay, and computers. Artists' works may be realistic,
stylized, or abstract and may depict objects, people, nature, or events. Art today is the key form of

Through my research, artist can struggle to find a job they want or find it hard to sell their art. Those
artists who do not versatile in the different media's of art, their opportunities can be limited due to
keen completion in both salary jobs and freelance work. This is mainly due to the number of
qualified workers/artist exceeding the number of available openings in the career field. As I stated
earlier, there are some requirement to becoming an art director, and fulfilling those requirements can
be difficult. You have to at least find a job and keep it competitively to sustain an income. In a
Houston Chronicle article online by Megan Torrance mentions painters like me have trouble finding
work and commissions, "...the BLS reports that the number of charitable donations has been
declining in recent years. In spite of this, interest in the occupation has remained steady and led to a
larger pool of qualified candidate... the BLS projects the market will remain competitive from 2010
to 2020" (Chron.com). The artist occupying the art and design field is increasing while the number
of jobs openings is staying at a steady rate. This is why it is important to be versatile in multimedia
of art, so that you have more opportunities at different jobs in the art field. To be an art director you
pretty much have to be versatile in the different media's and have a few different positions under
your belt to qualify for the position. Another disadvantage to be

Essay on The Importance of Art Education
Art education is often underestimated by many who believe that school was created to teach only
analytical concepts such as mathematics and literature. However, research has shown that art
courses are important, even necessary for students in elementary, middle, and high schools. These
art classes may include not only visual arts but performing arts such as dance, theatre and choir.
Barbara Streisand said, "Art does not exist only to entertain, but also to challenge one to think, to
provoke, even to disturb, in a constant search for the truth," (Quotations). Streisand points out that
there are multiple benefits to art whether it be painted by a brush or sung from the heart. Art has the
ability to allow people to see situations from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During the early twentieth century, art education was seen as unproductive and more often not cost
effective. However, in the 1950's opinions about art education made a drastic change as Americans
craved more self–expression. Art education began to flourish as the importance of art involvement
became known (DeHoyas). Figure 1 represents the answers of 97 people when they were asked
whether art education was important in school from kindergarten through the twelfth grade. 100% of
them answered that art education was important. This poll was conducted using people of various
ages, demographics, and backgrounds (Saal).
With the utilization of visual and performing arts, students can begin to enhance their personal
growth. By producing original works, enjoying the time spent on the piece of art, and having a sense
of pride in one's accomplishments, an art student will experience an increase in self–esteem and
confidence (Importance). A child who receives praise for their art work from parents and teachers
will most likely be more positive in their artistic abilities. For example, when a child brings a
painting home to his parents and his parents react with smiles, cheers and display the picture on the
refrigerator, the student will in turn feel very proud of his accomplishments. This newly found self–
esteem and confidence often expands into other subjects at school to the overall benefit of the
individual. Participating in art is also a way for students to

Creating A Visual World : Overcoming Barriers
Living in a Visual World: Overcoming Barriers to Employment in the Visually Impaired and Blind
Community People who are blind or visually impaired have significantly higher rate of
unemployment than those in the general population (Ferronatoa & Ukovic, 2014). According to the
National Federation of the Blind (NFB), in 2013 only 40.2% of adults at working age who reported
significant vision loss were employed (Erickson, Lee, & Schrader, 2015). The visual impairment
community faces numerous barriers when seeking employment. In the past employers have believed
that hiring people with disabilities may negatively affect their other workers or they may be unable
to complete the tasks of that occupation (Golub, 2006). Crudent, Sansing, and Butler (2005), have
identified several barriers that are most common for people with visual impairments, which include;
negative attitudes towards visual impairments, transportation, lack of job skills, finding access to
print, and lack of support in the rehabilitation organizations. Examining the current research on
barriers to employment and how to overcome them demonstrates the benefits the field of
rehabilitation counseling and how to better serve clients within this community. People who are
blind or visually impaired have the ability to prevail over the obstacles put in place by the
environment and society. The key areas of focus in this article is employer attitudes,
accommodations, transportation, agency influence, and social support.

Visual Search Experiment
A visual search experiment is a task that requires your attention to be focused on specific thing or
object. While doing this, you are actively scanning for a specific feature or object, known as a target,
while other features are around the one you're looking for, also known as a distractor. In the case of
the use of this visual search experiment, it was able to bring our attention to how long it takes us to
process information and find the specific thing that we were looking for.
The first trial included using a feature search, which had all of the distractors in blue. But, then the
second trial was Conjunctive; in that they added more shapes and colors some of them blue circles,
and even green squares. In the trial I completed, I was told that I needed to use the "n" key to set up
for the stimulus, and then to press the "m" key if the stimulus was present, or "z" if the stimulus was
not present. The target that I was looking to find was the green circle. I needed to record if we could
find it as quickly and as accurately as possible using the keys. There were 80 trials that I went
through and had to complete. Throughout the trial I was looking for the green circle amongst all of
the other distractors. The distractors were all the color blue but their shapes changed throughout.

Variables are the types of search that we completed (feature or conjunctive), the number of shapes in
any given trial, and the choice of whether or not the target is present. The Dependent Variable is how

Essay on Changing Photojournalism Education in American...
Changing Photojournalism Education in American Universities
Kenneth Kenney stated the obvious in 1987– "The lack of trained teachers and educators and
standard teaching materials is the most pressing problem in photojournalism education" (Kenney
1987). The same rings true today– professors in the fields of journalism and photojournalism are
practicing the same things they were taught in college– many have been out of the workforce for
years, if they were working journalists or photojournalists at all. Today's professors were trained in
the beginning of the digital age or earlier, and practices and requirements for the future
photojournalists have changed, and are continuing to change daily. Without the proper re–education

To ensure the proper training with equipment, the student must have access to the constantly–
changing and updating materials that photojournalists, photographers, and journalists regularly have
to evolve with.
Oblinger and Oblinger again address this– today's college students, the "Net–Gen", have grown up
with technology– they have the latest computer, software, programs, websites, phones, etc. Children
and youth today average more time spent on digital media than watching TV. Today's Net Gen also
expects up–to–date technology in their learning process, and expect their professors to have
knowledge of the technology similar to theirs (Oblinger and Oblinger, 2005).
Photojournalism today epitomizes the multimedia function– photojournalists are required to perform
multiple duties rather than just take pictures. Instead, they are both taking the pictures while also
writing the story, taking video, and uploading to social media. Despite the constant addition of
duties, staffers are expected to perform them all in less time than they were previously expected to
perform one duty. Education in video, audio, photography, writing, and social media is imperative
for the future photojournalist, and with skills in all of these sets, a photojournalist will be more of an
asset to the employer than one who has only one or two of these skill sets. Specialized focuses in
photojournalism education should also be

Research on the Logistics and Mechanisms of Attention
Attention is a mechanism directly involved in the selection, distribution and maintenance of
processing resources, which determines our ability to process complex and multiple stimuli from our
environment and is crucial to our success and survival. Given the large magnitude of visual
information we encounter every day, the existence of a selective mechanism –at a conscious and
unconscious level– that regulates what we pay attention to is indisputable; it has even been
conceptualized as a supramodal mechanism that distributes cognitive resources according to task
complexity and motivation (Salthouse , Rogan & Prill , 1984). Initially conceived as a single
spotlight alternating amongst foci (Tiffin, Knight & Jackson, 1946), attention is now understood to
be beneficial due to its capacity to divide. Nevertheless, there is a limit in scope and manner, so we
are constantly promoting the priority processing of certain information in the presence of multiple
stimuli (Rosselló, 1999). Understanding the logistical constrains behind this prioritization and
allocation of resources is thus important from a theoretical perspective (Vergauwe et al., 2010), but
also due to its practical implications in various fields such as the military, sports, transportation,
safety and education (Strayer & Johnston, 2001; Gingerich & Lineweaver, 2014).
Generally, these constrains have been studied in two specific domains: space and time. Regarding
space, visual search paradigms explore how stimulus

As the species that depends on sight more than any other scent, seeing so often has certainly become
much more than believing, which is only further reinforced by this age of intense and numerous
visual stimuli. Upon my recent visit to New York City, I could easily see that the line for the virtual
city ride at the Empire State building was much longer than that for the observation deck. This
mania for visual experience has taken over, increasing our conviction in what we see as what is,
despite their crucial differences. Yet, this is no newfound novelty. The human tendency to take
things at their face value is ancient and persisting. This excessive dependence on visual stimulation
has led to an excessive false belief in the falsity of appearances; a belief that causes the casual
classification of people that is so rigid and narrow in its function that failure to fit into them results
in losing one's sense of identity, even when identity is itself such a fluid and complex concept. I
have always contended that human beings have a tendency to classify what we experience into
categories and assign them with labels. With our dependence on visual stimulation, we generate
concepts and categorizations based on what we see, and file them away to be used on a wider scale,
allowing those who live in China and those who live in the UK to synthesis the signified through a
similar signifier. As our world becomes more

Chapter I. THEORETICAL ASPECT OF USING VISUAL MATERIAL IN TEACHING ENGLISH
1.1. The importance of using visual aids in teaching English Nowadays, whereever you go around
the world you can find a certain people who can communicate with English Language. Because of
globalization and other reasons English is going to be the language of the world. Apart from the use
of English as their mother tongue in some countries there are a number of countries who can teach
English as Second Language or Foreign Language. Hence, in order to use English Language more
effectively and efficiently having rich knowledge of vocabulary is crucial. In most cases you can
find communication break down when the students at school are not able to recall the appropriate
word for the right situation of interaction. So in order to overcome this and similar problems the use
of visual materials in teaching English Language vocabulary is mandatory. The use of visual
materials makes the meaning of the words memorable and long lasting in students mind. Visual
Education is not new. It has years of research back of it. A Dutch Humanist theologist and writer
Erasmus (1466–1536) disclosed memorization as a technique of learning and advocated that the
children should learn through the aids of pictures or other visuals. While John Amos Comenius
(1592–1670) prepared a book known as Orbis Sensilium Pictus (the word of sense objects) which

The First Amendment Speaks On The Freedoms Of Religion
Hannah Bing
Judy Hatcher
WRIT 3037
17 October 2016
Free Art The First Amendment speaks on the freedoms of religion, speech, press, assembly and
petition; so important, they found their place in the US Constitution. Even with these freedoms
meaning so much to the majority of America, somehow today we still encounter differences in
political and religious views that seem to provoke people to act violently against a piece of art or
even physically against the artist that created it such as in the recent case of artist Illma Gore. Often
the violent action of destroying a work of art is "more offensive" than the image itself. We should
allow artists free reign of subject matter as well as style and work together to prevent art desecration
and violence through education of the arts. Censorship is the result of the fear of art. When the fear
of art turns into iconoclasm or, rejection of a valued belief system, that fear becomes lack of
government funding, desecration, and physical violence.
Visual artists fell through the gaps and did not receive federal support for their work until the
creation of the NEA or National Endowment for the Arts in 1965. This federal program had little
funding but proved a growing interest in art and art viewing from the public. This demand for art
creates a demand for funds to support venues and museums so they can keep their doors open. A
problem with the NEA is that they provide government funding, which prevents them from being
biased about

a guerilla fighter (Kleege, 2002). After the war Howe was offered the opportunity to open a New
England asylum for the Blind in Boston (Wittenstein, 2013), which later became the Perkins School
for the Blind (Hatlen, 2000). With no background in education, Samuel G. Howe began his career as
an educator of the blind, including people who were deaf/blind, in 1829 (Ajuwon & Oyinlade, 2008;
Kleege, 2002). Howe based his school, the Perkins School for the Blind, on the European models of
schools for the Blind (Ajuwon & Oyinlade, 2008; Hatlen, 2000). However, he only picked the most
suitable methods that he thought would be able to benefit his students the most (Kleege, 2002). He
did not only educate the students who were blind. Laura Bridgman was Howe's first deaf/blind
student. She is also known as his first miracle (Smith & Anton, 1997). One of Howe's first
contribution to the field of visual impairments, was his efforts to teach blind veterans, adults and
enslaved people, who did not have access to schools where blind children were taught while still in
the military (Wittenstein, 2013). Further, his encouragement to other states in the U.S. to start their
own schools for the visually impaired was another contribution to the field of education of the
visually impaired (Wittenstein, 2013). Further, he was seen as a leader in the field of education of
blind and deaf/blind

Priming Race in Biracial Observers Affects Visual Search for Black and White Faces Introduction: In this paper, we see how priming can be used as an experimental aid and to what extent it can influence the subjects. Chiao, Heck, Nakayama, and Ambady (1) consider the notion of whether priming a particular racial identity in a mixed–race individual (specifically Black and White mix) would influence the individual's ability to search for White or Black faces. Previous Research forms new Experimental Hypothesis: The authors' interest in the application of priming to visual perception stems from a lack of empirical research done in this particular field. Priming a certain social identity (race, gender, age, or occupation) and its ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Raters used a Likert scale from 1 (not at all) to 7 (very much), and they weren't treated blind (not told the racial identity of the authors or their mother or father). Results: The raters came to the conclusion that White–primed biracials are more likely than Black–primed biracials to be thinking about their White identity after writing the essay about their chosen parent's ethnicity. Rates found that Black–primed biracials are likely to be thinking of their Black identity than White–primed biracials. These results showed that the priming was effective in priming biracials to identify more with one of their races. The visual search results were based on mean search times. Outliers and incorrect responses from the averages were excluded to maintain the consistency of the results. Building on previous research, overall participants demonstrated a search advantage for Black faces. This Black–target advantage was larger for Black than for White participants. The results of the biracial participants most affected their original hypothesis (it was what was developed by the authors on top of previously existing data). Black–primed biracials and White–primed biracials different significantly in the magnitude of their search advantage for Black over White targets, and the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

PREVALENCE OF NON STRABISMIC VERGENCE DYSFUNCTIONS IN AN ORTHOPTIC CLNIC INTRODUCTION In the preceding generations, fine distance visual acuity and stereoscopic vision were of paramount importance, since the survival depended absolutely on the capability to farm, hunt and fish. But today, the emphasis has shifted virtually from distance visual functions to two dimensional near visual tasks such as desk work, reading, computer usage etc.The presence of non strabismic binocular dysfunctions such as accommodative and vergence anomalies make it difficult for the visual system to perform these kind of activities with accuracy and effortlessness. When persons, who are in short of suitable accommodative and vergence amplitudes, are involved ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In a clinical study to determine the presence and clinical implications of the general binocular dysfunctions in a population of university students, Esteban Porcar et al 4 found a prevalence of 32.3 % of non strabismic binocular anomalies. To achieve as estimate of the population prevalence of vergence dysfunctions, we have systematically reviewed the previous studies related to this. So this study was designed to estimate the prevalence of vergence dysfunctions in an orthoptic clinic set up and also to set up well defined diagnostic criteria for all the vergence anomalies. MATERIALS AND METHODS 755 Patients above the age of seven years presented consecutively to the orthoptics clinic of Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai between March 2010 and February 2011 was considered for this retrospective cohort study based on the inclusion and the exclusion criteria with the help of Medical Record Department and Electronic Medical Record (EMR) search engine. The inclusion criteria used were age more than or equal to seven years, distance best corrected visual acuity of > 6/9 in both the eyes, near best corrected visual acuity of N6 @ 30–40 cm, adequate sensory fusion with worth four dot test for distance as well as for near, Random Dot stereo acuity of 500 arc seconds or more. These specific outcomes enable learners to cope with everyday life. If these outcomes are obtained by learners, they have an opportunity to release their potential through various learning strategies. During the intermediate and senior phase, teachers must provide learners with a wider and more advance programme in order for the learners to gain more opportunities and skill developments. It is particularly important for teachers to ensure that the breadth, depth, access and entailment skills are developed by the learners to make critical choices during the FET phase.(J Nel & Dr RM Odendaal, 2003. Professional studies, Art and Culture) Art Education in school equips and helps learners discover their full potential and talents. Inspired by the burgeoning craft movement of the 1970s, Sylvia attended California College of Arts and Crafts and studied fiber arts, moving into jewelry and metal work later on. Having collected crafts for many years, she started collecting artwork because she was surrounded by so many amazing artists. The first painting in her collection was by an artist who shared her Norwegian heritage and acquired by trading her studio jewelry for the painting. Finding herself more drawn to Abstract Expressionism and contemporary art over time, today Sylvia focuses her collection on non– representational art, often with elements of texture or found objects. • 22. Eye Health And Vision : Macular Degeneration KIRANDEEP KAUR PROF.DR. TOBI ABRAMSON HSCI 410 F01 OCTOBER 23rd, 2016 PROJECT: EYE HEALTH AND VISION Macular Degeneration is depreciation of the central portion of the retina, which records the images being sent by an eye and is located on the inside back layer of the eye. Retina sends images via the optic nerve from the eye to the brain. Macula is another name for retina's central portion and is responsible for focusing central vision in the eye. This controls person's capability to read, drive a ca, recognizes faces or colors. As per one of the article Macular degenerations have said to be the leading cause of vision loss, which affects more than 10 million Americans– more than cataracts and glaucoma. It is one of the incurable eye disease. Dry and wet are two types of Macular degeneration. It is being researched that 85% to 90% are dry cases and 10–15% are the wet cases of Macular degeneration. Age related Macular degeneration(AMD) consists of three stages. In early AMD stage one does not experience vision loss. In Intermediate AMD stage there is some vision loss, but no noticeable symptoms. Late AMD is more sever with vision loss being noticeable. According to one of the article Age related macular degeneration is a pathological change in the central portion of the retina. • 26. Understanding Of Mpm And Measuring Improvement Essay RESEARCH PROPOSAL Study objective: Understanding of MPM and measuring improvement in store sales . INTRODUCTION Retail enterprise is a kind of commercial enterprise with high level of competition. The success of retail business depends on how fast can a retailer recognize consumer behavior and buying pattern. Retail business must focus on the factor affecting consumer buying pattern and elements that shifts customers buying decision. Store atmospheric attributes (which include shade, lighting fixtures, income personnel, music and so on) shape the general context within which shoppers make decisions of store selection and patronage. Many of the previous research on retail environment suggests that such attributes affect the image of the store. Retailers comprehend the significance of such attributes and systematically attempt to avail of an atmosphere, inclusive of suitable colors, music and so on that will attract their target customers. Further, purchase decision–making has emerge as complicated task due to the inseparability of product and services offered in retail outlets. Retail store floor planning is a complicated task. The essential objective is to maximize sales with customer satisfaction and minimize overall prices. Many factors affect the store floor planning, like the arrival pattern of clients, design of the building, required service level, merchandise mix, adjacency requirements and lot more. • 30. Visual Art Plan By Otto Dix And James Gleeson Visual art Plan Artists all around the world have used metaphor in their pieces of work to convey meaning. "A figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an object or action to which it is not literally applicable." Most if not all pieces of art you can see in a museum or out on the street have remanets of metaphor beneath them. Artists use metaphor in their work to tell a story or a time period or in this case meaning. As the old saying goes a picture is worth a thousand words. The artist distorts the image to the way he or she wants to see it or would want others to see it. For example, Otto Dix and James Gleeson are artists that are known for having and using metaphor and spirituality in their pieces of work. Otto Dix has ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Otto Dix was a great artist. His paintings were very strong with spirituality and metaphor this was because he served in the first world war. Many of his paintings were of the first wold war because Dix volunteered and became a machine gunner which exposed him to see death daily. Through his experiences in the war he gained a lot of knowledge and saw a lot of things. One of his pieces stood out to me the most. That piece was the wounded soldier. In this picture I can see a muddy ground with blood splattered everywhere. The ground and the soldier almost looks like he is decaying. The soldiers face has an expression of confusion and elements of fear across him. Given his mouth is wide open it looks like he is in enormous amounts of pain and looks like he is screaming. This could be the face of a person going through their last seconds before they die or get shot. His hand is squeezing his heart like he got shot in the area. His helmet seems to be dirty and bloody as almost like he has been here for a long time. The work has been put together very well according to the elements and principles of art. The lines in the art work are very bold and revealing. The lines are clearly outlining the wounded soldier and what is movements and actions are at the current time of him being painted. The colour of this art work is in black and white but even though it is in black and white Dix has done a good job of telling us what things are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A Life Of Darkness : Major Causes Of Blindness Kara Garner Mrs. Kristin Rabun English 1102 02 October 2014 A Life of Darkness; Major Causes of Blindness Every five seconds, someone in the world goes blind. Throughout the world today, there are an estimated 39 million people who are considered legally blind. According to the Merriam–Webster dictionary, blind is defined as being sightless or unable to see. The term blindness can also be used to describe the other 285 million people worldwide who are considered to be visually impaired. While these people may not be considered completely blind, they still need a lot of help perceiving images. A cataract scatters light as it passes through the lens, which stops a defined image from reaching the retina of the eye. Unlike a normal eye that has light passing through the transparent lens, a cataract causes the lens to be hazy. As a result, the image striking the retina will be blurry and the vision becomes emulsified. The range of visual impairment depends on how cloudy the lens is. According to MedicineNet.com, the extent of the visual disturbance is dependent upon the degree of cloudiness of the lens (Dahl, Sheil, 2014). Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness worldwide and are especially common in older people. The protein that makes up the lens begins to cluster together causing the clouding of the lens as people age. Over time, the cataract usually grows larger, ultimately resulting in the lost of sight. The second leading cause of blindness in the world is glaucoma. According to the Bulletin of the World Health Organization, glaucoma is the general term for a group of similar diseases. In primary open angle glaucoma, the channels that drain fluid within the eye become blocked, causing pressure within the eye to rise, resulting in gradual loss of vision. There are very few symptoms so many people do not realize they are losing their sight. The other type of glaucoma that leads to blindness is known as angle closure glaucoma. Biological Processing System: Understanding Color and Contrast Introduction While interacting with the world, human visual system is perhaps the first and foremost biological process system that directly involves in detecting information. As Colin Ware (2013) noted in Information Visualization, "We acquire more information through vision than through all of the other senses combined". Hence, it is crucial for information designers to understand influential factors which affect our visual system in order to optimize information visualization for users. With visual sensory system acting as a signal detecting system, this paper intends to look at a variety of perceptual elements of a particular case but mainly focuses on their visibility in terms of contrast and color. More specifically, the paper will be examining these concepts as if the website is viewing by an elderly user. In fact, a variety of concepts exist that individuals commonly apply to their own identity. Aiding people, the ideas help explore who they truly are as well as help understand themselves better. But at the same time, they can either be helpful and relate to you with your identity, or do the complete opposite. Of the broad amount of concepts to the identification of people, there are three that exist named Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligences, Adler's Birth Order, as well as learning styles. Each person is unique in their own way, especially the outstanding capabilities of their mind. For example, it is common to only know of the visual learning, auditory learning, and kinesthetic learning aspects, but what people do not know is that the mind goes beyond that (Lane). Developed by Howard Gardner exists the Multiple Intelligences, which consists of nine different intelligences. Of all of the intelligences exists Verbal–linguistic, Logical–mathematical, Spatial–visual, Bodily kinesthetic, Musical, Interpersonal, Intrapersonal, Naturalist, and Existential (Howard Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligences). Despite an expanded outlook on the world, Luke and Anna find themselves in a place of vertigo as they struggle to come to terms with the harsh world that is Garra Nulla. The metaphor "some days she feels like a fly caught in an invisible web" establishes a visual of one who is confined by their negative experiences, unable to escape, whereas the description of "an invisible web" depicts an image of an unexpected challenge that has impacted on Anna's initially idealistic view of country living. However, despite the couple's dislocation and the destructive yet regenerative bushfires an overall feeling of hope at the end of the novella is reassuring. Lohrey delineates this through the symbolisation of the black swans at the closing stage of the novella. "Look", she says, "the swans are back." Representing a return to normality in their world as the re–emergence of the swans metaphorically represents the return of hope. The omniscient narrator reveals Anna's inner dialogue "Ah, she says so you are leaving us. So you are on your way at last. But it's okay, it's alright; yes, she thinks, I am ready for this..." displaying that they are finally able to attain comfort over the grief of losing their son. Despite Anna's and Luke's negative experiences, the responder attains a feeling of reassurance as through the distinctive images created we observe a return to normality and ultimately a positive feeling of ... • 50. Lab Report On Search For Things On A Day Julia Monaco Cog Lab #1 Introduction: We use our attention to search for things on a day–to–day basis, whether complex or basic. Items we are searching for are noticed easier when there are many of the same different items (distractors) around the one we are searching for. It helps the item we are searching for stand out. When there is more than one different, kind of distractor around the item (target) it makes it harder for us to find to find it. Mackintosh (1975) states, in order to have selective attention we learn to watch or ignore the stimuli depending on its relevance to what we are looking for. We also learn "inverse relationship" between the different stimuli. If stimuli increase the other, stimuli will decrease and vice versa. We use these ideas when we were looking for a certain stimulus and we have to find it in different scenes of varied other stimuli (distractors). According to Treisman and Gelade (1980), the theory tells us that attention has to be individually directed to each dependent stimulus regardless of the distractions surrounding it. One stimulus has to be easily distinguishable to be detected as different. In order to find the target crowded by the various distractors, we have to make sure we specifically focus our attention on just finding that one stimulus and not the distractors. According to Treisman (1982), when searching for the dependent stimulus in a scene with other different stimuli, we scan the scene in groups rather than by each ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 54. Exploring The Possibilities Of Discovering The Neural... Exploring the possibilities of discovering the neural correlates of visual consciousness In the ongoing strive to better understand the mechanism of consciousness, the possibility of discovering the neural correlates of consciousness (NCCs) is arguably the leading agenda in its scientific research. Although the question of whether consciousness can be fully reduced to its neural correlates remains debatable, it is still credible that whenever an appropriate brain process occurs, the associated subjective experience follows (Chalmers, 2013). Thus, this essay will demonstrate that it is plausible that the minimal brain processes necessary for a conscious percept can be experimentally narrowed down to a smaller coalition of neurons. Understandably, the complexity of the cortical system that is yet to be fully deciphered, along with the technological difficulties in obtaining essential data has hindered the search for the NCCs and have lead some to doubt the possibility of ever locating it (Fins & Plum, 2004). It is also likely that there are numerous NCCs, each associated with different modalities, which complicates the task further (Chalmers, 2013). For the purpose of this essay, the possibilities of discovering the neural correlates of visual consciousness are discussed in particular. This essay aims to define the foundational concepts of the science of consciousness, outline the experimental projects in finding the neural correlates of visual consciousness, and address ... Visual attention is defined as a term that portrays how individuals are able to change their view while attending to an image that is of a normal perspective due to the neurones in the cortex (Carasco, 2011). It is often described as a focal point which is situated with different locations in the region of space (Wright, 1998). Visual search requires detecting a specific target as quickly as possible. For example, trying to find your car in a large car park. By focusing our attention to the specific environment it improves our visual search of the target (Keane et al., 2015). The speed of a visual search ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, the simple feature search requires features to combine to form objects, It requires attention to bind the primitive features into conjunctions. It is a slower process than conjunction search as it requires to scan the whole scene which is therefore time consuming (Gelade et al., 1980). The hypothesis of the present study predicts that the participants will react quicker to the simple feature condition compared to the conjunction feature condition when presented with targets in different display sizes. Clark's work does not reside in the spatial understanding of an object, it would now be accomplished in temporality, and an experience in which the art object would lose is object–ness and become a force affected by the world, distorting one's subjective and object–based realities. Yet the work could still exist as an object, independent from the experience and those who approached it could remain merely viewers of the object. This understanding led Clark to avoid "fetishization" of the work as it resides in an institution and the work became focused on an event: an action that transforms the work. It is important to state that the request of Lygia Clark's work to involve the body as a primary element should not be mistaken with a request to simply manipulate the objects presented, as was common with works presented at the time. In their letters, both Lygia Clark and Hélio Oiticica insisted that their works differed from the others of their time. Even in our post– modern art world, it still seems logical to create that distinction. As is common in current art, the need for interactivity in the work requires that both the body manipulation the object and the object itself, in a relational form, requires that both be considered art objects. Vision and Blindsight Essay Vision and Blindsight Implications Regarding Consciousness Vision–– receiving and interpreting light signals from the environment in order to form an image in one's mind–– is an incredibly complex process. Somehow signals from photoreceptors located in the eye are converted into the conscious experience of sight. Of all the aspects of vision, perhaps the most difficult for us to comprehend scientifically is this notion of consciousness. Somehow the brain interprets light waves hitting the retina so that we are visually aware of our surroundings. While the mechanism of signal transduction from the photoreceptor through the visual cortex has been extensively elucidated, science has difficulty dealing with the phenomena of consciousness ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Patients tend to correctly identify shape, color, and motion of inputs. In a forced choice experiment, where the subject is asked to identify certain features of a visual cue, the subject will perform much better than chance even though they feel as if they are randomly guessing (2). While head trauma or tumors often induce the "psychic" blindness of these patients, a model has been developed in monkeys by removing all or part of the primary visual cortex. These monkeys are able to respond to visual inputs. They can be trained to touch illuminated bulbs rather than unlit ones and identify certain colors and patterns in order to obtain food. This phenomenon is believed to parallel human blindsight because when trained to respond differently according to whether there is a visual cue or not, these monkeys respond as if there were no cue when a visual input is presented to the blind field (1). It is therefore believed that these animals are able to respond to and identify features of a visual cue even though they do not report seeing it. The phenomenon of blindsight has far reaching implications regarding consciousness, awareness and the "I" function. These studies demonstrate that receiving and interpreting visual inputs is independent of our awareness of that input. Does this imply that there is a separate mechanism of "consciousness" which can be disengaged from our senses? Marcel proposes that this loss of visual consciousness results from the ... Visual Search – In this activity I participated in a classic psychological experiment that uses visual search tasks to explore fundamental process of visual perception and attention. In general I learned that selective attention filters enable us to make more automatic decisions about the stimuli around us, including which items to pay attention to during a visual search. Also, since your brain is always active and sees visual sights and sensory information, your mind copes by automatically screening or filtering incoming sensory information to let in only what is most important. Specifically, I learned that the first set of trials I did were the feature search part of the experience and the second set of trials were the conjunction search part of the experience. What I learned about my self after doing this activity is that I had a quick reaction time on the first set of trials as I was asked to find a blue circle amid orange squares and circles. But, on the second set of trials my reaction time was not as quick as it first was. On the second set of trials, I was asked to find the blue circle amid blue squares and orange circles. I believe my reaction time was quicker on the first set of trials due to the fact that I was just looking for the color blue among orange squares and circles, but on the second set of trials I was looking for a blue circle among blue squares and orange squares. • 98. The Artist's Toolbox Analysis To evaluate an artist's message, we must first examine the physical characteristics of the artwork. The specific features that should be examined will vary depending on the form of art, but let us consider paintings for this example. The angles of the lines, the colors used, the arrangement of the figures, the size of the work, the amount and direction of the lighting, and numerous other physical characteristics can provide critical clues both to the historical context of the painting and to the artist's underlying message (Clevenger. Module 3, The Artist's Toolbox: The Elements of Visual Art, p. 2). When combined with an understanding of the time period in which the painting was created, the physical features can help us determine whether ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In reference to formal art instruction in schools, Smith claims that "[The purpose is] to help children increase their capacity to create meaning and make sense of themselves and the world around them" (qtd. in Epstein 38). It is evident by looking at popular entertainment that true art is not valued by most of the younger members of our society. Popular music and television shows, if they contain any messages at all, promote shallow, 'feel–good' truths at best, and anti–Biblical propaganda at worst. As Christians, we must become aware of the deeper questions posed by real artwork. Once we have a grasp of the questions being asked and have evaluated the suggested answers from the perspective of a Christ–centered worldview, we should then expose our children to uplifting artwork and discuss the value of the messages that those works express. I am not yet married, and thus I recognize that the passage of time and new experiences may change the approach I now propose. Nevertheless, I currently plan to expose my future children to fine literature, especially poetry, so that they will be equipped to think critically and to appreciate beauty. With the knowledge that I have gained from this class, I also will be able to discuss with my children both the meaning behind artwork and the differences between works created in various time periods and cultures. There is a constant interaction between the physiological system in terms of visual information processing and cognitive performance. It is conceivable that older drivers who suffer from poor vision would ultimately have worse cognitive performance irrespective of the degree of age related cognitive declines. In other words, declines in physiological performance exacerbate the effects of aging on cognitive functioning. Brouwer (1993) contends that impairments that lie both on the level of receptor–effector organs and on the level of cognitive functioning, particularly 4 attention, contribute to the problems older drivers encounter with the driving task. For example, perceptual, cognitive, and motor declines affect an older driver's ability to merge with traffic. On the perceptual level, older adults have difficulty seeing and determining the speed and distance of the traffic they need to merge with. On the motor level, they have difficulty turning their necks and looking back far enough to see that traffic. And, cognitively, they have difficulty maintaining all the information needed to make a decision about joining the flow of traffic because of declines in attention and working memory. When they eventually respond however, they are slower to do so than the situation requires.

Advantages and Disadvantage to being AArt Director Michael Temple Professor Sigmon RWS 305 11 a.m. 14 October 2014 Need for Visual Communication Art has been much more than just a hobby or a way of expressing ones feelings, it was long before there was any proof of a verbal language; art was a key form of communication. Artists create art to communicate ideas, thoughts, or feelings. They use a variety of methods such as painting, sculpting, or illustration. Also an assortment of medians, including oils, watercolors, acrylics, pastels, pencils, pen and ink, plaster, clay, and computers. Those artists who do not versatile in the different media's of art, their opportunities can be limited due to keen completion in both salary jobs and freelance work. This is mainly due to the number of qualified workers/artist exceeding the number of available openings in the career field. As I stated earlier, there are some requirement to becoming an art director, and fulfilling those requirements can be difficult. You have to at least find a job and keep it competitively to sustain an income. In a Houston Chronicle article online by Megan Torrance mentions painters like me have trouble finding work and commissions, "...the BLS reports that the number of charitable donations has been declining in recent years. In spite of this, interest in the occupation has remained steady and led to a larger pool of qualified candidate... the BLS projects the market will remain competitive from 2010 to 2020" (Chron.com). The artist occupying the art and design field is increasing while the number of jobs openings is staying at a steady rate. This is why it is important to be versatile in multimedia of art, so that you have more opportunities at different jobs in the art field. To be an art director you pretty much have to be versatile in the different media's and have a few different positions under your belt to qualify for the position. Another disadvantage to be ... Essay on The Importance of Art Education Art education is often underestimated by many who believe that school was created to teach only analytical concepts such as mathematics and literature. However, research has shown that art courses are important, even necessary for students in elementary, middle, and high schools. These art classes may include not only visual arts but performing arts such as dance, theatre and choir. Barbara Streisand said, "Art does not exist only to entertain, but also to challenge one to think, to provoke, even to disturb, in a constant search for the truth," (Quotations). Streisand points out that there are multiple benefits to art whether it be painted by a brush or sung from the heart. Art has the ability to allow people to see situations from ... However, in the 1950's opinions about art education made a drastic change as Americans craved more self–expression. Art education began to flourish as the importance of art involvement became known (DeHoyas). Figure 1 represents the answers of 97 people when they were asked whether art education was important in school from kindergarten through the twelfth grade. 100% of them answered that art education was important. This poll was conducted using people of various ages, demographics, and backgrounds (Saal). With the utilization of visual and performing arts, students can begin to enhance their personal growth. By producing original works, enjoying the time spent on the piece of art, and having a sense of pride in one's accomplishments, an art student will experience an increase in self–esteem and confidence (Importance). A child who receives praise for their art work from parents and teachers will most likely be more positive in their artistic abilities. For example, when a child brings a painting home to his parents and his parents react with smiles, cheers and display the picture on the refrigerator, the student will in turn feel very proud of his accomplishments. This newly found self– esteem and confidence often expands into other subjects at school to the overall benefit of the individual. Participating in art is also a way for students to ... Creating A Visual World : Overcoming Barriers Living in a Visual World: Overcoming Barriers to Employment in the Visually Impaired and Blind Community People who are blind or visually impaired have significantly higher rate of unemployment than those in the general population (Ferronatoa & Ukovic, 2014). According to the National Federation of the Blind (NFB), in 2013 only 40.2% of adults at working age who reported significant vision loss were employed (Erickson, Lee, & Schrader, 2015). The visual impairment community faces numerous barriers when seeking employment. In the past employers have believed that hiring people with disabilities may negatively affect their other workers or they may be unable to complete the tasks of that occupation (Golub, 2006). Crudent, Sansing, and Butler (2005), have identified several barriers that are most common for people with visual impairments, which include; negative attitudes towards visual impairments, transportation, lack of job skills, finding access to print, and lack of support in the rehabilitation organizations. Examining the current research on barriers to employment and how to overcome them demonstrates the benefits the field of rehabilitation counseling and how to better serve clients within this community. Changing Photojournalism Education in American Universities Kenneth Kenney stated the obvious in 1987– "The lack of trained teachers and educators and standard teaching materials is the most pressing problem in photojournalism education" (Kenney 1987). The same rings true today– professors in the fields of journalism and photojournalism are practicing the same things they were taught in college– many have been out of the workforce for years, if they were working journalists or photojournalists at all. Today's professors were trained in the beginning of the digital age or earlier, and practices and requirements for the future photojournalists have changed, and are continuing to change daily. To ensure the proper training with equipment, the student must have access to the constantly– changing and updating materials that photojournalists, photographers, and journalists regularly have to evolve with. Oblinger and Oblinger again address this– today's college students, the "Net–Gen", have grown up with technology– they have the latest computer, software, programs, websites, phones, etc. Children and youth today average more time spent on digital media than watching TV. Today's Net Gen also expects up–to–date technology in their learning process, and expect their professors to have knowledge of the technology similar to theirs (Oblinger and Oblinger, 2005). Photojournalism today epitomizes the multimedia function– photojournalists are required to perform multiple duties rather than just take pictures. Instead, they are both taking the pictures while also writing the story, taking video, and uploading to social media. Despite the constant addition of duties, staffers are expected to perform them all in less time than they were previously expected to perform one duty. Education in video, audio, photography, writing, and social media is imperative for the future photojournalist, and with skills in all of these sets, a photojournalist will be more of an asset to the employer than one who has only one or two of these skill sets. • 139. Research on the Logistics and Mechanisms of Attention Attention is a mechanism directly involved in the selection, distribution and maintenance of processing resources, which determines our ability to process complex and multiple stimuli from our environment and is crucial to our success and survival. Given the large magnitude of visual information we encounter every day, the existence of a selective mechanism –at a conscious and unconscious level– that regulates what we pay attention to is indisputable; it has even been conceptualized as a supramodal mechanism that distributes cognitive resources according to task complexity and motivation (Salthouse , Rogan & Prill , 1984). Initially conceived as a single spotlight alternating amongst foci (Tiffin, Knight & Jackson, 1946), attention is now understood to be beneficial due to its capacity to divide. Nevertheless, there is a limit in scope and manner, so we are constantly promoting the priority processing of certain information in the presence of multiple stimuli (Rosselló, 1999). Understanding the logistical constrains behind this prioritization and allocation of resources is thus important from a theoretical perspective (Vergauwe et al., 2010), but also due to its practical implications in various fields such as the military, sports, transportation, safety and education (Strayer & Johnston, 2001; Gingerich & Lineweaver, 2014). Generally, these constrains have been studied in two specific domains: space and time. Regarding space, visual search paradigms explore how stimulus ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Upon my recent visit to New York City, I could easily see that the line for the virtual city ride at the Empire State building was much longer than that for the observation deck. This mania for visual experience has taken over, increasing our conviction in what we see as what is, despite their crucial differences. Yet, this is no newfound novelty. The human tendency to take things at their face value is ancient and persisting. This excessive dependence on visual stimulation has led to an excessive false belief in the falsity of appearances; a belief that causes the casual classification of people that is so rigid and narrow in its function that failure to fit into them results in losing one's sense of identity, even when identity is itself such a fluid and complex concept. I have always contended that human beings have a tendency to classify what we experience into categories and assign them with labels. With our dependence on visual stimulation, we generate concepts and categorizations based on what we see, and file them away to be used on a wider scale, allowing those who live in China and those who live in the UK to synthesis the signified through a similar signifier. The importance of using visual aids in teaching English Nowadays, whereever you go around the world you can find a certain people who can communicate with English Language. Because of globalization and other reasons English is going to be the language of the world. Apart from the use of English as their mother tongue in some countries there are a number of countries who can teach English as Second Language or Foreign Language. Hence, in order to use English Language more effectively and efficiently having rich knowledge of vocabulary is crucial. In most cases you can find communication break down when the students at school are not able to recall the appropriate word for the right situation of interaction. So in order to overcome this and similar problems the use of visual materials in teaching English Language vocabulary is mandatory. The use of visual materials makes the meaning of the words memorable and long lasting in students mind. Visual Education is not new. It has years of research back of it. A Dutch Humanist theologist and writer Erasmus (1466–1536) disclosed memorization as a technique of learning and advocated that the children should learn through the aids of pictures or other visuals. The First Amendment Speaks On The Freedoms Of Religion Hannah Bing Judy Hatcher WRIT 3037 17 October 2016 Free Art The First Amendment speaks on the freedoms of religion, speech, press, assembly and petition; so important, they found their place in the US Constitution. Even with these freedoms meaning so much to the majority of America, somehow today we still encounter differences in political and religious views that seem to provoke people to act violently against a piece of art or even physically against the artist that created it such as in the recent case of artist Illma Gore. Often the violent action of destroying a work of art is "more offensive" than the image itself. We should allow artists free reign of subject matter as well as style and work together to prevent art desecration and violence through education of the arts. Censorship is the result of the fear of art. When the fear of art turns into iconoclasm or, rejection of a valued belief system, that fear becomes lack of government funding, desecration, and physical violence. Visual artists fell through the gaps and did not receive federal support for their work until the creation of the NEA or National Endowment for the Arts in 1965. This federal program had little funding but proved a growing interest in art and art viewing from the public. This demand for art creates a demand for funds to support venues and museums so they can keep their doors open. A problem with the NEA is that they provide government funding, which prevents them from being biased about ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

After the war Howe was offered the opportunity to open a New England asylum for the Blind in Boston (Wittenstein, 2013), which later became the Perkins School for the Blind (Hatlen, 2000). With no background in education, Samuel G. Howe began his career as an educator of the blind, including people who were deaf/blind, in 1829 (Ajuwon & Oyinlade, 2008; Kleege, 2002). Howe based his school, the Perkins School for the Blind, on the European models of schools for the Blind (Ajuwon & Oyinlade, 2008; Hatlen, 2000). However, he only picked the most suitable methods that he thought would be able to benefit his students the most (Kleege, 2002). He did not only educate the students who were blind. Laura Bridgman was Howe's first deaf/blind student. She is also known as his first miracle (Smith & Anton, 1997). One of Howe's first contribution to the field of visual impairments, was his efforts to teach blind veterans, adults and enslaved people, who did not have access to schools where blind children were taught while still in the military (Wittenstein, 2013).
