The water cycle describes the continuous movement of water on, above, and below the surface of the Earth. Water evaporates from bodies of water and soil due to heat from the sun, rises into the atmosphere and cools to form clouds, and falls back to Earth as precipitation in forms such as rain, snow, or hail. The water then either runs back into bodies of water through runoff, or sinks into the ground to become groundwater, completing the cycle.
