Assure Method
This unit is for a first grade, special education class aging from six to eight years old.
There are ten boys compared to seven girls, 70% Caucasian with a few African American and
Hispanic origins. Seven students in the class have a mild to severe ADHD. The class does well
with working together in small groups and prefer arts and crafts activities. They have difficulty
sitting still for a long amount of time. Some find it problematic when testing on paper.
The first grade students will recite, in chronological order, the twelve months of the year.
They will hear songs, analyze and construct simple calendars, and pronounce the names of each
month. Students will have achieved this by the end of the week with a 95% accuracy.
My method will be small grouping with 3-4 children per group as well as the class as a
whole. Based upon the materials provided, I will be using a CD player to play songs for the
class as a whole and present calendars. For one of the stations I will have mix and match
premade month worksheets for the students to decorate with crayons and put together with string.
The CDs, calendars, and crafting materials have all been previewed for safety and
appropriateness. The seats have been arranged into small groups and the stations have been set
up and labeled. The CD player is close to me for convenience to turn off whenever necessary.
The students have been introduced to the months and have been given a handout previous for
their own practice. The activities and stations are described and pointed out to the first graders.
The CD is set to the correct track and volume for all students to hear clearly. Follow up
activities and discussion will be provided at the beginning and end of each class period.
At the beginning of the lesson, as a refresher, the students will all sing together the song
they learned and will be asked questions regarding the order of the months. After the largegroup participation, the students will go into their same groups for hands on activities and
repetition. While in the groups they will come to me individually to recite the months so I’ll be
able to evaluate who requires more attention.
The calendar projects will be taken home every night for practice and verbally quizzed
each morning. At the end of the week each student will recite to me individually the twelve
months in order for their final evaluation.
