6. Romanticism
• First decades of 19th century
• Linked to nationalism, opposed the strict rationality of Neoclassical
style.
• Promoted emotions, celebrate love and freedom against the
rationalism of the enlightenment.
• Predilection for the exotic and imaginary culture.
• Predilection for wild and savage nature.
• Significant artist: Delacroix, Gericault, Turner, Friedrich.
15. Realism
• Second half of 19th Century
• Linked to socialists ideas, broke with the passional expression of
romanticism, to denounce the hard reality of common people.
• Wanted to depict the reality as clear as possible.
• Interest in the lifestyle of the popular classes.
• Important artists: Coubert, Millet, Daumier.
