characteristic is that it was based off of the art of
the Enlightnment. This artistic movement
affected such things as: Arquitecture, Painting,
Sculpture, Music and Literature. It appeared
because of the need to know and restore
the ´´ancient´´ culture.
• Romanticism: It was an artistic, literary, musical,
and intellectual movement originated in
Europe at the end of the 18th century. It was
characterized by its emphasis on emotion and

7. Liberty Leading the People
Origen of the painting:
The canvas symbolizes the Revolution of 1830 on July 28, a scene in
which the people of Paris take up arms against King Charles X of
France. The latter had suppressed parliament by decree and intended
to restrict the freedom of the press. The riots turned into an uprising
that led to a revolt of French citizens.
Topic:
You can see a structure in a pyramid position with those killed for
Freedom at the base and this at the top a woman holding the French
flag in her right hand and a rifle at the opposite end.
For Delacroix, color not only had a representational value, but also
an emotional meaning of its own, with which he tried to capture
people's feelings and moods on canvas. In the background is the
stormy sky of Paris (another romantic feature). He uses pale colors
with ocher tones and loose brushstrokes, highlighting the blue, red
and white of the flag.
Characteristics:
-open form.
-The sensation of perspective
-The light in the painting is unreal, it
illuminates Liberty with the tricolor flag
8. The Death of Marat
• Origen of the painting:
• Depicts the death in 1793 of French revolutionary
leader Jean-Paul Marat.
Marat was stabbed to death on July 13, 1793, while
working in his bathtub, by Charlotte Corday, who
supported the more moderate Girondin faction. Corday
marched from Normandy to Paris obsessed with the
idea of assassinating the man whom she perceived as
a "beast", in order to "save France", and managed to
approach him using the subterfuge of alerting him to
an alleged counterrevolutionary conspiracy.
Characteristics
• Marat's face is serene despite
the terrible death he had
and nothing seems to have
twitched him at that fatal
moment. This painting is an
elegy that a heartfelt but
serene David has executed to
honor the memory of his friend,
who died as a sacrifice for the
republic.
