This document contains Jessica Monk's plans and drafts for the front cover and double page spread of her magazine titled "Riff". It includes descriptions of her masthead design, cover lines, images, and interview layout. For the front cover, Jessica explains that the masthead will be positioned in the top left corner and include a red gradient text with white and black drop shadows. Cover lines promoting the Lana Del Rey interview will be on the left side in red text. The double page spread layout includes a pull quote, three columns of interview text wrapping around the quote, and two medium close-up images of Lana Del Rey.

3. I sent an email to
Bauer media asking
them more on the
production process
of a magazine,
however I did not
receive a reply,
therefore I had to
adapt my
production based on
the information I
had already
gathered from LO1.
Here I have created
a monthly
production plan,
which covers areas
such as; selecting
the publication date
and creating the
structure of my
front cover and
double-page spread
using Photoshop,
which I will be
following each
month.
In my production plan I have included areas such as; the beginning of each of
the four weeks, the tasks I will be carrying out, the equipment needed to
complete those tasks and the date which they must be finished by. As my
production Plan is for a monthly magazine I have started production from 20th
October to 10th November. Contents

I have created a table showing the production costs. I have focused on the salaries of the workers,
The typical starting salary for a Senior Editor is £24,484, the median salary a senior editor can earn is £31,641.
However the highest salary varies depending on the number of years experience they have in the profession, the
more experience the higher the wage.
The typical starting salary for a Publishing copy-editor/Proof reader is £20,000 and the median salary they can earn
is £25,000. Just like the senior editor the highest wage varies depending on years of experience but the highest
salary they could be earning is £30,000.
The typical starting
salary for a publishing
rights manager is
£17,000, and the
median salary they
can earn is £23,000.
just like other jobs in
the publishing
industry the highest
salary is determined
by experience, if they
really have potential
they can earn
£30,000+.

process of a magazine. Contents
6. I created a Plan for
Images (Location Recce)
which shows the plan I
will follow when taking
images for the first issue
of Riff. I have taken into
consideration the
important details which
would be relevant to a
photographer such as;
the types of shots needed
to be taken, the location
were the images must be
taken and the equipment
needed in order to take
the images. For each
issue I must create a
‘Location Recce’ to allow
the photographer to
know the details required
to take images which fit
the indie genre and are of
a high standard.
Contents
As the images will be taken at another persons house
I will need to ask permission to be able to take the
images, as the person may disagree meaning I would
have to change location.
8. Location of the Images
The location I had chosen to take my images was at Amelia
Morris house.
I chose to take my images inside as the specific location was most
appropriate for creating portrait style images. Inside I was also able to
use the lighting which I had set up. The plain white background was
fresh and bright and created the effect of a professional studio.
9.
10. Like Q Magazine my masthead will
be in the top left hand corner of the
front cover. I will also be sticking to
the red and white colour scheme,
however my unlike Q my text will be
red and my shape will be white.
My main headline will be positioned near the bottom of the page,
this is a feature which I will be replicating from my front cover of
inspiration. However I will be using red white with a black drop
shadow instead of plain white.
There will be a Puff Promotion in the top
right hand corner, this will include white text
on a shiny gold background. This will make
the puff promotion an eye catching feature
and draw the readers attention. This is a
feature Q Magazine don’t use very often.
My cover lines will be positioned
down the left hand side of the front
cover, instead of using both black
and red text I have chosen to use
plain red with a black drop shadow.
This will give my magazine a ‘Retro’
‘Rock N Roll’ feel.
I have chosen to position
my main image to the right
and will manipulate it so it
fits the width of the front
cover.
At the bottom right-hand side
of the front cover readers will
notice a barcode containing
the date when the magazine
was released, their official web
address and convergence such
as; Facebook and Twitter.
My strapline of “Like Music
To Your Ears” will be
positioned below my
masthead. The font I will be
using will be the same as my
interview text, and again I
will be sticking to the red
and white colour scheme.
11. Like Q I will be keeping my stand first across the top of the page, this will introduce the reader to who is
being interviewed. The main text will be in the colour red and use the font ‘Roboto’ which is the same as
my interview, however the name of the main star will be ‘Lemon Milk’ which is the same as my masthead.
My drop capital will be a
red letter O in the same
font as my masthead,
positioned at the top of
the left page. This will be
significantly larger than
my stand first and pull
quote.
You can see my pull
quote will be placed
across the middle of
the left page, I will be
using the font ‘Orator’
which is different to my
masthead and stand
first. The text will be
red with a thin drop
shadow behind.
My three text columns will wrap around my
pull quote, the font I will be using is
‘Roboto’. Instead of sticking to my red and
white colour scheme my text will be black. I
have chosen his is the most common colour
for magazine interviews.
On the right page there
will also be three text
columns, to hold the last
section of my interview
which didn’t fit on the
left page.
At the bottom of the right page I will
include a quote from my interview,
just like my pull quote the font again
will be ‘Orator’ with a thin black drop
shadow behind.
As for images I will be
using two medium
close up shots, of the
main star. Each will
contain a red border
with a small caption
underneath, describing
the image.

12. Interview
The image above show my draft interview with Lana Del Rey, as inspiration I looked to Q magazines interview with Spandau Ballet. Throughout the
interview Q focus on bringing out the humorous side of the band, therefore I had drafted questions which were similar to the ones from Q Magazine for
example question 2 which asks “Your shows have been named ‘peculiar; and ‘extravagant’ tell us about your most embarrassing performance?. To be
able to answer these questions I had to make sure that Lana Del Rey’s response was language appropriate, and that it was relevant to a previous
performance from her career. I also had to make sure that the questions were answered as if she was present during a real interview, therefore I
research some previous interviews with Lana Del Rey to be able to make the interview seem realistic and engaging.
Contents
13. The cross as the beginning of the flat plan symbolises the front
cover of my magazine.
The smaller blue squares symbolise the images the reader will
notice within content such as; quick fire interviews, double-page
advertisements and album reviews.
The larger blue squares symbolise double page posters relating to
the artists being interviewed within the magazine.
The black crosses symbolise where the reader will see a double
page interview or advertisement. Either side of my double-page
interview with Lana Del Rey I have included double-page
advertisements to keep the reader engaged, and encourage them
to read on.
I created a magazine flat plan to allow the editorial and
production team to familiarise themselves with the structure of
Riff magazine. I have made sure that I include details such as;
what the content will be, were images relevant to content will be
placed and were the readers can expect to see advertisements.
I will be following this flat plan when producing future issues.

14. Lemon/Milk
Maxxii Serif
Mangosteen
Contents
I have chosen to make my masthead lettering bold, however looking
at the font ‘Maxxii Serif’ the letters are to thick and close together,
this would not leave much space for my drop shadow. Where as
‘Mangosteen’ the letters are to thin but they are still to close together.
Overall I feel that
Lemon/Milk is the most
suitable for my
magazine, although the
font is simple its also
very effective and would
best compliment my
masthead.
The masthead I have chosen for my magazine will be ‘Riff’ which I
have taken from guitar riff, I will position my masthead in the top
left-hand corner of my magazine which is a feature that Q magazine
also do.
I will incorporate all
three colours from my
colour scheme into my
masthead, by having a
red gradient feel text, a
white drop shadow
inside the text and a thin
black drop shadow.
15. Masthead
My masthead will be Riff taken from guitar Riff which is popularly associated with rock and roll, it will be positioned in the top left corner of the front cover. As this will
be the magazines main feature it will be brightly coloured and stand out against other features. The masthead will also include all three elements of the red, white
and black colour scheme.
Strapline
My strapline will be ‘Like Music to Your Ears’ as my masthead is Riff the strapline will make the reader think of a popular guitar riff.
This will also be a memorable strapline and engage the reader, as its different to Q which is my magazine of inspiration. I will position
my strapline below my masthead therefore once the reader has noticed the masthead they will immediately see thestrapline.
Main Headline
My main headline will be positioned beneath my main image, this again will be the same font as my masthead and cover lines, like Q I
have chosen to keep my masthead simple by using just the name of the artist who is being interviewed which is ‘Lana Del Rey’.This is
a feature which they use quite often as it makes the artist easily identified and doesn’t over power other features such as,the main
image or the masthead. Above my main headline I will be including the words ‘Exclusive’ to grab the readers attention.
Cover Lines
My three cover lines will be positioned down the left hand side of the front cover, they will be the same font as my masthead and
main headline, the text will be red with a black drop shadow. I will include artists which appeal to my male and female target
audience, and whom have appeared in my magazine of inspiration which is Q magazine. The few words will give the reader a
short description of what to expect within the article. The cover lines will use both emotive and descriptive language to catch the
readers attention for example, I will be using sad story's to draw out the readers emotions and positive stories to entertain the
reader.
Puff Promotion
My puff promotion will be a gold box found in the top right hand corner of the front cover, by having my masthead in the top left
corner of the front cover will make the reader look at the right, meaning they will notice my puff promotion. I have chosen to use
the band Arctic Monkeys as they are one of todays most popular indie bands and have proven popular with my male and female
target audience.
Images
I will be using three media close ups one of which will be my main image and the other two will appear on my double-page spread. I
have chosen to include a medium close up on the front cover and the audience will see the emotion on the artists face, but also their
body language. The close up of the artists face will also grab the readers attention, as it will be easily noticed,
Other potential
masthead
fonts: Maxxii
Serif and
Mangosteen.
Final Font: Lemon/Milk; best
suited my masthead, compliments
other features and easy to read as
its not fancy like other fonts I had
chosen.
16. House Colours
The house colours I have chosen for my magazine are red, white and black, I think that these three colours are suitable for my
magazine are they would appeal equally to my male and female target audience and embrace the indie genre. The colour red is
bright and eye catching, the colour white is vibrant and allows brighter colours to stand out, and the colour black is mysterious
but its the colour we see mostly associated with rock n roll. Although the colour red is known to be feminine I have chosen to use
the colour black as it contrasts with the colour red and allows my magazine to appeal to both genders. For features like the
masthead, cover lines and the main headline I will be using the colour red. For the interview text I will be using the colour black,
and white will be used as the background colour.
Page Layout
For each issue the layout will be similar however small features will change such as; were the main headline is placed, or the
number of cover lines. I will be keeping the structure the same as this will give my magazine recognised star appeal. The colour
scheme wont be changing except for what feature it can be seen on, for example cover lines and main headline. For each double
page spread the structure will be kept the same except for the type of images which the reader will notice. The quotes will
always use a different font to the drop capital and stand first.
House fonts
The main font I will be using throughout will be ‘Lemon/Milk’ for features like; masthead, cover lines and main headline. For my
interview text I will use the font ‘Roboto’ as its simple but easy to read, for my pull quotes I will be using the font ‘Orator’.
Contents
17. • For my magazine I will be interviewing pop superstar Lana Del Rey, I have chosen to interview this artists because of her
worldwide success and her music appeals highly to my male and female target audience. Not only does she fall in the
indie genre some of her music is considered pop, her distinctive voice makes her music unique and different from the
music we hear today.
Contents
• I will also appeal to the reader by including images which will introduce them to Lana Del Rey's life before she was famous for example, I will include
a picture of the house where she grew up as a young girl, and a picture taken by her dad when she used to play free gigs in her garden as a teenager.
• Throughout the Q interview with Spandau Ballet the magazine focuses on bringing out the humorous side of the band,
therefore my interview will ask questions which focus on the past 3 successful years of her career, the highlights which
made her the artist she is today and how entertaining the music industry can be. For example question 2 in my interview
asks “Your shows have been named ‘peculiar; and ‘extravagant’ tell us about your most embarrassing performance?.
• The type of answers which will be given throughout my interview will focus on the humorous side to Lana Del Rey as she shares her personal views
and experiences as a music star, helping the reader to reflect on her personality.
18. Masthead
For my masthead I took inspiration from Q magazine by creating a shape behind
my masthead text, instead of using a square I had chosen to use a rounded edge
rectangle, I then changed the colour from red to white. I then like Q positioned
my masthead text in the middle of the shape, and filled it with a red gradient to
create the effect of fading. I then put a small white stroke effect inside the text,
and a black drop shadow around the outside.
Cover Lines
As you can see my cover lines are positioned down the left side of my front cover
just below my strap line and above my main headline. I had chosen to keep all
text on my front Cover the same font as my masthead, which was Lemon/Milk. I
have included three cover lines both male and female artists. You can see the
name of the artist and a short sentence giving a brief explanation of what the
story is about. To keep with my colour scheme I had chosen to use red text with a
black drop shadow, to appeal to my both gender target audience.
Main Image
For my main image I have used a medium close up of the artist, which I have
positioned to the right of the front cover, this is a feature which I have replicated
from Q magazine. I adjusted the brightness of the image to highlight areas such as
facial features and skin colour. I also used the spot healing tool to even out the
blemishes and remove any spots or freckles which made the picture look
unprofessional. For her hair I used the selection tool to target the areas which I
would be changing colour, then using the paint bucket I filled selection brown. I also
used the paintbrush tool to create the effect of lipstick.
Main Headline
For my main headline I have taken inspiration from Q by using just the name of
the artist featured on the magazine, to help the reader identify who the article is
about. I have positioned my main headline ¾ of the way down the cover just
above my barcode and overlapping my main image. Again I have chosen to use
the font Lemon/Milk to show consistency. I have also kept the colour scheme the
same as my cover lines, by using red text with a black drop shadow.
Contents
19. Drop Capital
For my drop capital I
had used the same font
as my interview text
which was Roboto, I
have positioned my
drop capital to which
the interview text is
wrapped around.
Sticking to my colour
scheme I changed the
colour of the drop
capital from black to
red, to make it bright
and eye catching.
Quotes
For my dps I had chosen to include two quotes each stating
significant points from the interview. I had chosen to use a
different font from my interview and drop capital which was’
Orator’. I had positioned my first quote at the top of the left page
with the interview below, and my second quote below my 2
images. Both are red text with a black drop shadow.
Interview Text
I created three columns
below my quote to hold
my interview text. I had
chosen to use the font
‘Roboto’ as this was basic
and easy to read. For
each question asked by
the interviewer I made
Images
For my two images I have
again used 2 medium close
ups of the artist,
positioned next to each
other on the right page.
Again I adjusted the
brightness of the images ,
this time to bring out
features such as; props
and clothing. I only had to
use the spot healing tool
quickly for these images as
they weren’t zoomed in as
much as the one on my
front cover. However I still
used the paint brush to
create the effect if lipstick.
sure the text was bold so the
reader was able to identify the
person asking the questions and
who is being interviewed.

20.
21. 1. Creating the page structure
The first step was to create the structure of
the front cover using the template already
built in Photoshop. By moving the blue grid
lines I was able to set the correct page
dimensions for areas such as the masthead,
main image and main headline.
4. Adding in the cover lines
Using the text tool and the font Lemon/Milk I typed
out the name of the artists who would appear in my
cover lines, I then made the text red, and added a
black drop shadow. Next I typed out the brief
sentence which would feature below, making this
text red as well. I then checked if all the cover lines
were the same size and were in line with each other.
3. Adding in the main image
Next I imported the image which would appear on my front cover.
This was to large to fit allocated space, therefore I resized the
image, and changed the brightness and used the spot healing brush
to remove any skin blemishes and spots which would make the
picture look unprofessional. I then selected the outline of the hair,
and using the fill bucket changed the colour of the hair to brown.
2. Creating the masthead (shape text and colour)
The next step was to create the masthead, to create
the masthead shape I used the rounded edge
rectangle tool to create a 5.2X4.6 cm shape, which I
then filled white. Next I gave the shape a black drop
shadow changing the opacity to 100%. Using the text
tool I typed the words ‘Riff’ changing the font to
Lemon/Milk. Finally I filled the text with a fading red
gradient effect.
5. Adding in the main headline
Using the text tool I typed out the
words ‘Lana Del Rey’ and changed
the size of the text, so it fit across
the front cover. I then changed the
text colour to red, and like my
cover lines gave it a black drop
shadow.
6. Creating the barcode
Using the square tool I drew out a 2.3X1.8cm square, which I filled white. I then imported a
picture of a barcode and placed in the middle. Above I typed out the release date, and the
magazine website address. Below I typed out the social media links (Facebook and Twitter) next to
them I placed small images of their logos.
7. Puff promotion
Using the rounded edge rectangle tool I drew out a 2.3X2.1cm shape, I then overlaid a sparkly
gold pattern. Using the text tool I typed out the details of the competition, changing the text
colour to white, and adding a black drop shadow. I then placed this feature in the top right
hand corner of the cover.
8. Make Up and Clothes
To change the colour of the clothes I selected the outline of
the dress, and used the paintbrush tool to colour in her
clothes. I then adjusted the brightness making the dress a
pale yellow colour. To add make up to her face I selected
the outline of her mouth, and used the paintbrush tool to
colour this in red. Then softened the colour to look more
natural.
Tools Used
Ruler, Grid lines , Rounded
rectangle shape, Square
shape, Paint bucket, Paint
brush, Gradient fill , spot
healing tool.
22.
23. 1. Creating the page
structure dps using the
template already built in
Photoshop. By moving the
blue grid lines I was able to
set the correct page
dimensions for areas such
as the masthead, main
image and main headline.
5. Interview
Using the pen tool I created three columns which
wrapped round my pull quote, which I later added my
interview text to. However I had to make three more
columns on the other page as the text didn’t all fit on
the same page.
6. Images
I imported the two images which I
would be using for my dps. The
images were both to large to fit
allocated space, therefore I had to
crop and resize them both. I then
changed the brightness and used the
spot healing brush quickly to remove
any skin blemishes and spots.
4. Quotes
Using the text tool I typed out my quotes and
changed the font to ‘Orator’. I had to adjust the
size of the text to allow other features to fit on
the page. I also changed the colour of the text to
red and added a black drop shadow.
7. Banner
At the bottom of the pages I used the rectangle tool to create
two 20x0.5cm shapes, which I then filled red. At each corner I
added a small masthead next to the page number.
3. Drop Capital
Using the text tool I
typed out the letter O in
the font ‘Roboto’ which I
changed to the colour
red, and placed beneath
my stand first.
2. Stand First
Using the text tool I types out the text
for my stand first, which I changed to
the colour red. Beneath I added a small
picture of my masthead with the words
‘Exclusive’ beside also in the colour
red.
Tools Used; Grid lines, Ruler, Pen tool, Text tool ,Paint bucket, Spot
healing brush.

24. Contents
After I had completed my
Front Cover and Double-
Page Spread, I asked for
feedback from the
publisher which can be
seen in the image to the
left.
With this I was able to
make improvements to
my front cover and
double page spread, to
my magazine the
professional feel it was
lacking before.
25. After taking in consideration the feedback I received from
the publisher I made some improvements to my front
cover which were;
Main Image
The publisher also mentioned
that it was best I took my main
image again, as my attempt at
changing the hair colour didn’t
not look real. Therefore I had to
re-take a set of images and
select the one which was most
similar to the original. This time
I changed the hair colour using
the simple tutorial suggested.
Exclusive
The publisher also suggested
that my magazine would be
more appealing if I included
the words ‘Exclusive’ above the
main headline. Like other
features on my magazine I
used the font Lemon/Milk and
kept the text red with a black
drop shadow.
Cover Lines
An improvement suggested by
the publisher was to check that
all conventions where the
same size and in line. As it was
noticed that my three cover
lines weren't the same size or
in line with each other.
Therefore I adjusted the size
and made sure that they were
in line using the grid lines on
Photoshop.
I also brightened
the background.
Main Image
It was also mentioned that
I softened the edges of the
main images which I did to
make the image look
more realistic and
professional.
I also changed the date from
December 2014 to January
2015, as I felt this would be
a more appropriate release
date.
Contents
26. After taking in consideration the feedback I received from the publisher I made
some improvements to my double-page spread which were;
Images
Feedback also
stated that one of
my two images
looked distorted,
therefore I would
need to re insert
the images again. I
have now
corrected and
added in a red
stroke effect
around both to act
as a border.
Interview Text
As my interview
text wasn’t able to
fit on one page, I
had to create three
further columns on
the right page to
hold the rest of my
interview.
Contents
Stand First
One improvement
suggested by the publisher
was to make sure that I
included a stand first, to
introduce the reader to the
artist featured in the article.
Which I later added in using
Photoshop, positioned
above my drop capital and
interview, in the same font
as my masthead
Hyphenated Text
Another improvement
mentioned by the
publisher was to check
for hyphenated text. In
which I proof read the
interview making sure
there was no
hyphenated text.
Pull Quote
The publisher also mentioned that I should change the
positioning of my Pull quote to allow the text to wrap
around. Therefore I placed my quote in the middle of
the left page, and using the pen tool created three new
columns to hold my article.
27. By creating a monthly production plan allows the production of the magazine to stay in
order, by setting a series of deadlines for the editorial department to follow allows features
such as; the written content, and the structure of the magazine to be produced on time for
the magazine to be release on the desired date.
By producing an image plan for each issue I am able to give the photographer clear
instructions on the pictures they will be required to take. This allows the photographer to
understand the number of images needed, the orientation of the images and the location
were they will need to be taken. If I did not create an image plan the photographs which
would appear in the magazine wouldn’t be relevant to the indie genre and be appealing to
the target audience.
By producing a magazine flat plan this will allow me the editor to know the structure of my
magazine. This will also help to instruct the editorial team when creating the magazine, so
they know were to place the content and were to include an advertisement. Without a flat
plan the magazine would be unorganized and the content would get lost within the
advertisements.
