7. Q2: What genre of music does the magazine focus on and how do you know this? All of the people who answered one of my questionnaires said that the magazine focuses on ‘Pop’ music, this is for a number of reasons including colours used and the simple fonts.

8. Q3: What makes the pages look professional & What stops them from looking professional? Two of the people who completed my questionnaire commented on the quality of the photography and the images used, others also commented on the use of the fonts and a barcode.

10. Q4: How genuine does the front cover seem? Magazine front cover All of the people who gave me feedback commented on how genuining the front cover looks. One person did comment that the colours on the photo didn’t match the txt colour.

11. Q5: Does the contents page simply inform you or does it also manage to interest you in reading the rest of the magazine? Contents Page 100% of the people who gave me feed back said they would read on, everybody also said the page informs you as well as and that the picture is good. One person also said that the photo ‘dominates’ the page.

12. Q6: Does the article sound like a piece of journalism? If not what bits don’t sound right? The only negative comment I received about the article was that somebody didn’t understand why the word ‘DROPPED’ was in big letters and that it sound like a story, not an interview.

13. Q7: Does the articles layout make you want to read it? If not why not? 100% of people said that the article layout does make you want to read it, however one person did comment that the text could have been better placed around the bottom picture.

14. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? When creating my magazine front cover I followed most of the music magazine conventions, however not all of them. For my title I used a certain type of font that is large, bold and informal, I thought fitted the pop music genre and also my target audience, but I made sure that my text was bold & large so it follows typical conventions for a young teen audience, in my audience feedback all of the people said that they liked the titles. I have also used a barcode on the front cover because nearly 100% of magazines now have these on the front cover along with the price. To follow the genre of my magazine and the target audience I used attractive colours and colours that fit my genre of pop, like using the colour scheme pink and blue. When I was creating my magazine I also decided to use a large image that ‘dominates’ the page, but also one where the artist is looking directly at the reader, which follows the convention of indirect address. I have also used key headings to entice the reader to read the magazine , which also follows the conventions of a music magazine.

When creating my contents page I decided to challenge typical magazine conventions by having the picture on the contents page ‘dominating’ the page When creating this page I decided to use the same colours I have done for the front page and the double page, so it didn’t look odd. I also followed the typical music magazine conventions by highlighting the best articles and using these on the contents page, this encourages the reader to carry on reading the magazine and turn to that page.

For my double page spread I have written the artists name at the top of the page and I have also done a paragraph introducing the artist which music magazines regularly do, this also follows the conventions of a typical music magazine. When I was adding my article to my page on ‘InDesign’ I split the article up into different columns and picked out some words that will make the reader interested and want to read on, this follows the conventions of a music magazine. When I was creating this page I tried to use mainly the same colour I used in previous pages to keep the house style going, I used the same blue and pink colour to do this. The picture across the bottom of the magazine of my artist also dominates the page, which follows the typical conventions of a music magazine.

17. How does your media product represent particular social groups? In my magazine my singer is a pop singer and she is just launching herself, the magazine is mainly aimed at girls age 12 - 16 years old, I have represented them by using pink quite a lot in my magazine and also bright colours. I have also made my magazine quite lively and attractive so it attracts the target audience.

18. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why? After researching similar pop magazines like mine, I have decided that my magazine is most like the ‘Top of the pops’ magazine, it features up and coming pop artists put also hit artists already. My magazine is different to the ‘Top of the pops’ magazine publishers, which is published by ‘BBC magazines’. I think that my product could be published by ‘IPC, who already publish other major magazines, including ‘NME’ and other leading music magazines, I think they would be the ideal publishers as they are a large company and have many contacts.

19. Who would be the audience for your media product? The target audience I have chosen for my magazine is mainly girls age 12 – 16, this is because this age range are interested in pop music and celebrities. My main target audience would be British, the magazine will feature mainly British singers and artists. Although the age range I have chosen doesn’t have a lot of income I have chosen them because they have lots of free time, therefore allowing them to read my monthly magazine priced at £2.95 per month but that works out at less than 75p a week so it isn't that expensive.

20. How did you attract / address the audience? There are many factors that attract someone to reading a magazine, these include: The title I used this was creative and modern to attract a young audience, I also used a catchy title with the word ‘Turn It Up’, but I shortened it to ‘TIU’ and made the text so each letter was bigger. On the front cover I made sure that my artist was looking at the camera and she is also pointing at the audience blowing at kiss, this makes the cover more catchy and attractive. The artist is also female so this attracts to a female audience. On the Double page spread I have also used large colourful titles as well as picking out key words of my article and putting them in speech marks to make them stand out. I have also used ‘female’ colours, which is a connotation of ‘girlyness’. On my contents page I have added thing which would attract my target audience, this attracts readers to read on.

21. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product? Whilst creating my magazine I have learnt many new things these range from creating my blog to editing my photos to laying out my magazine on ‘InDesign’, I have also learnt how to download fonts from the internet to use. When creating my Blog I used a free online blogging website called ‘Blogger’ www.blogger.com , this was relatively easy to use and design, I posted all of my designs and ideas on my blog as well as a ‘magazine research questionnaire’, I also used this to gather all of my re search together. To create my ‘magazine research questionnaire I used www.surveymonkey.com , this was also relatively easy to use and I could embed it on my blog, this gave me the result, so I could analyse them.

22. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product? (Continued) To find better fonts than were already on the Apple Mac computer I was using I decided to search the internet, when searching I found a very useful website called www.dafont.com , this helped me to find a number of attractive fonts that matched the age group of my target audience, which I could go on and build my house style with. When taking my photographs in the studio I was a little worried that It might take a number of attempts to get the pictures quite right, but I was wrong I used professional lighting and a tripod to get my photos just right. This helped me to get better images than just taking pictures with no lights, as the pictures were bright and not blurred.

To Edit my photos I used ‘Adobe Photoshop’, which at first I found quite complicated and hard to work out, but after completing my preliminary task magazine, I began to become familiar with the controls and shortcuts. When I was familiar with ‘Photoshop’ I was then able to layer images and change the image colour, which I have done in the image of my artist below. To lay my magazine out and put it together I used ‘Adobe InDesign’, which allowed me to add fonts and the article text. I found ‘In Design’ relatively easy to use, when I got used to it. 24. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product? Since my preliminary task I have improved my design skills in a number of ways, the layout of my front cover of my preliminary task was very boxy and boring with just a large image of my artist taking up the whole page. My magazine colours were also very boring and didn’t match and wouldn’t attract anyone to read it. The image on the front page is also very blurry and is not well lit. The fonts I used on my magazine were also very simple and not creative, this was because at this point I didn’t know that you could download any extra fonts of the internet from sites like www.dafont.com .

25. Conclusion Overall I think that the magazine I have created looks quite professional in a number of ways, on the front page of my magazine I like the magazine name and the design, this is because I like the way I have used the first letter from each of the words ‘Turn It Up’ and written ‘TIU’, with each letter growing in size. I also like the photo on the front cover of my artist looking directly at the reader. The one thing I think that I could of improved on my front page of my magazine is the text saying what is in the magazine, as I think this looks a little boring. Overall, I am pleased with the layout of my contents page and my double page, as I think they are effective as they are eye catching and make the reader want to read my article.
