1. Evaluation Questions
What have you learned from your audience feedback?
Once I had finished my video in order to gather some audience feedback I decided to create a questionnaire. I would then ask a certain number of people to carry out the questionnaire for me. The questions I decided to ask my audience are these listed below:
Questionnaire
1. Did you like the video?
2. Did you like the song?
3. Do you feel the song fits with the video?
4. Would you class the video as within the ‘pop’ genre?
5. Does the video include what you like to see in a music video?
6. Was there a variety of footage used or should there have been more included?
7. Do you think watching the video has encouraged you to listen to the song?
I did not want to make the questionnaire too long, containing too many questions, so that collecting my results would be straight forward. Also the simpler the questions, the more easily I will find it to understand the over all response of my audience and find out what went right and what went wrong.
I asked 15 people to fill out my questionnaire. I asked slightly more girls than boys because I believe that my targeted audience was more girls from the start throughout. However asking males would enable me to get more detailed feedback. I kept the age of the people I asked pretty young because this was the age on which I based my target audience.
The results
1. Did you like the video? Yes 9 No 6
2. Did you like the song? Yes 11 No 4
3. Do you feel the song fits with the video? Yes 9 No 6
4. Would you class the video as within the ‘pop’ genre? Yes 12 No 3
5. Does the video include what you like to see in a music video? Yes 8 No 7
6. Was there a variety of footage used?
Yes 6 No 9
7. Do you think watching the video has encouraged you to listen to the song?
Yes 12 No 3
Once I had collected my results, I studied them in order to see what I could have changed and what worked well. In response to my first question 9 people liked the video and 6 didn’t. I knew that not everyone likes the video as everyone has different preferences. The second question I asked gave me a rather positive resulting stating that 11 people liked the song and only 4 didn’t. Like I said, this was positive feedback in my eyes however linking the two results together for the first two questions it immediately highlighted to me that my video did not express the song in a very good way. If I did this video again I would take this into account and try and explore why people like the song and try and reflect those opinions into the music video in order to increase positive feedback.
I found out when I asked my next question that 6/15 of the people felt my video did not link with the song I chose very well. Expressing the lyrics in the song was a hard task when producing the video and filming and I know myself that next time I would try harder to match the lyrics to the footage being displayed within the video. This will enable me to attract my audience more and keep them interested as they will understand the concept of the video more.
I was happy with the response I got to question 4, asking whether they felt my video could be classed within the genre ‘pop’. The song is a pop song so therefore I had set out to make sure the video explained this and people could recognise the genre quickly and successfully.
When I asked the question ‘Does the video include what you like to see in a music video?’ I got mixed responses. My results stated that 8 people said yes and 7 said no. I believe this will be to the fact that everybody has different taste in what they like to see in videos. I know that I didn’t include any performance based footage within my video and this could affect how I attract my audience. Performance is a huge part within videos as well as narrative. My video is more narrative I would believe and maybe this is what caused many people to believe it didn’t exceed the potential and include the features people like to see within a music video. This has helped me to realise that if I did this video again, or constructed any other music video, using more performance would encourage my audience to issue me with more positive feedback. However I would still include the narrative because people still did say they liked it.
When I was producing my video I know I didn’t have as much variety of footage as I would have liked. I felt that this would drag my video down. This can be shown within my results to the question ‘Was there a variety of footage used? ‘. The results were 6 people said Yes and 9 people said No. Negative feedback like this can only help me to understand what I should have done better within my video. Also it is vital information I will need in order to success in any other piece of work like this, creating a music video, as I will know what the audience like!
The main aim of a video can be to encourage people to listen to the song and promote it. Therefore I made it essential that I asked the question ‘Do you think watching the video has encouraged you to listen to the song?’. Positive feedback was received here with 12 people stating yes and only 3 stating no. I felt this was a good thing as a music video should encourage the audience to become interested in a song, especially if it is a song that is not very recognisable or famous and they may have never heard it before.
Overall I think my questionnaire has helped me to collect some vital information and feedback on my video. The feedback has been important for me to look at when producing y evaluation. I believe it will help me in the future to produce a piece of work more successful if needed.
