Shark Persuasive Speech
Roaming the oceans, a certain species leaves millions dead in its wake, leaving the seas red with blood. Of course, I'm talking about humans. The
imagery would undoubtedly make majority of people picture a rampaging shark, a common fear shared by many, but is this terror justified?
Globally, only around 6 people die because of shark attacks each year, nevertheless, humans kill a staggering 100 million sharks annually, and that's
only the reported statistic. At such a rate, sharks are being killed off at a faster rate than they can recover, due to the fact that sharks mature at a slow
pace and birth only a few large pups during their lifetime; this will to lead to the imminent demise of the species unless we abandon our barbaric ways.
Is there really reason to exterminate this magnificent species permanently? ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The process involves the catching of the shark, and cutting all of its fins off, leaving it completely immobile and vulnerable. After the harvesting of
its valuable features, they finally roll the newly disabled shark back into the sea, even though it is often still alive and suffering. As the shark cannot
swim or move at all, it only options is to act as bait for other animals or drift to the bottom and drown. The world doesn't treat other animals in this
manner, what makes sharks qualify for this sort of abhorrent abuse?
Although many European countries have banned shark meat, the trade still continues, with the price of shark fins ever increasing with the sinking
populations. The trade is lucrative, with the produce selling at prices up to $650 for a single kilogram. The barbaric trade leaves estimated 73 million
sharks slain for this exact purpose, with potentially even further casualties, as this is just the number reported by fishermen. While in the past
accidental catches of shark were simply released, nowadays they are brutally disarmed and ditched to

Sharks Are Worth More Alive Than Dead
Although out of fear or ignorance, some believe that sharks serve zero purpose, sharks are worth more alive than dead because sharks stabilize the
underwater ecosystem, and increase economic growth.
1. It is a common belief in certain cultures that shark fins have health benefits, when in reality that's not true. With increasing levels of pollution
entering into the oceans it's known that sharks absorb the pollution which create an unsafe level of mercury for humans to consume. Scientists at the
University of Miami recently conducted a study to test the concentrations of two toxins– mercury and ОІ–N–methylamino–L–alanine (BMAA) – in 10
different sharks species located in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans ("Study Finds High Level of Neurotoxins," 2016). Deborah Mash, the senior author
of the study and a Professor of Neurology stated, "Recent studies have linked BMAA to neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and
amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)," Contrary to cultures that believe shark fins contain health benefits, it's been proven that there's a direct link
between consumption of shark meat to neurodegenerative diseases. The evidence provided above proves to the earlier statement that there are no
health benefits, and that in fact, it may cause a increase damage to human health.
Conservationists across the globe have presented the notion that sharks are worth more alive than dead, because of the economic growth that shark
ecotourism brings in. "The study

Mass extinction is defined as a moment in time where a widespread event wipes out the majority of living plants and animals. There have been five
extinctions and no matter what, it's just bound to happen. I have always believed that extinctions are really a normal part of evolution. However,
after watching this documentary, extinctions are happening at a faster rate than usual. We, humans, are the very ones that are contributing to it.
Doing everyday things that we don't even think about would affect the world. Technology is so advanced today that we are able to fix things and
save species. But then again, how do you save species when there is at least over 8 million species on earth? How do you decide which one to save?
Where do you even begin? I have never heard about shark fin soup until I watched this documentary. I was very disturbed with what I saw. I searched
on Google for what shark fin soup was, apart from it clearly having shark in it. I was curious to know what was so important about it that people are
killing sharks just for their fins. From what I read, Shark fin soup is a luxury item in the Chinese culture and is usually served at weddings and
banquets. According to Wikipedia, "The shark fins provide texture, while the taste comes from the other soup ingredients". So I have a lot to share
about this topic.
To begin with, Sharks and Stingrays are a taboo for my family line. When I was little, my great grandmother fell off a boat out at sea and went missing.

Argumentative Essay On Shark Finning
Shark finning is the process of cutting off the fins of a shark and discarding the body at sea ("Stop Shark Finning", 2009). People catch sharks for its
fins, meat, oil, skin and so on. Sharks fins are most commonly used in Asian cooking which is shark fin soup. According to Maddalena, Sommeran and
Leander (2007), people have been demanding for shark fins dramatically recently, it is unclear how many sharks are caught annually but some of the
conservationists estimate the number to be upwards of 100 million. Besides, shark conservationists are aware about the consequences of the high
demand of shark fins, they advocate people to stop killing sharks and eating shark fins. Practice of shark finning is causing imbalance marine
ecosystems and it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to Latchford (2013) research, he states that the difficulty in preparation and the length of time taken to prepare certain food also represent its
uniqueness and allure in Chinese culture. However, to say that shark fin soup is part of the traditional culture for the majority of the Chinese is
disingenuous because most of the Chinese is not in a financial position to consume this dish. The consumption of this dish has only risen for the
last few decades. According to Sharks at risk (2013) although it is traditionally an expensive dish (with a price tag upwards of US$100 a bowl), it
is increasingly sold more cheaply and as economies grow in Asia, a dish once reserved for the elite is now available to many more consumers and
is in demand in many Asian communities around the world. Global trade in shark fins is increasing, and the market for shark fin soup is estimated
to be growing by 5% per year ("Stop Shark Fining"). Hence, even shark fins are used in traditional dish in Chinese culture but it is not the reason that
causing sustained demand of shark fins; it is because of people irresponsible consumption of shark fin soup and it is a main source of income for

Research Paper On Shark Finning
"For decades, sharks have gotten a raw deal on the high seas, where fishermen have butchered them alive by the hundreds of millions and thrown
their carcasses overboard, keeping only the prized fins to sell to Asian markets." (Bland) The practice of shark finning is used mostly for shark fin
soup, a Chinese delicacy that dates back to the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644). Shark fin soup is considered a symbol of wealth and social status and it
has been served over the years at special events like weddings, formal balls, and government banquets. Only since the 1990s, have people begun to
promote awareness of the horrors of shark finning. Shark finning involves cutting off a live shark's fins and then throwing the still–live shark back into

More than 600 years ago, shark fin soup became popular amongst Chinese royalty. Chinese emperors liked to serve the soup to special guests
because they believed it had medicinal benefits and represented wealth and power. Over time, shark fin soup became popular not just with royalty
and the wealthy, but also with the middle class, when they celebrated weddings, graduations, and other important events. Today "[in] Hong Kong,
Beijing, Taiwan, Singapore and other corners of Asian affluence...a heaping bowl of shark fin soup, said to offer medicinal or aphrodisiac qualities, is
dished up for up to $200," (Forero). This high price is a huge motivator for fisherman. "Many fishermen prefer to practice shark finning instead of
bringing whole sharks to the market because the fins are far more valuable than the rest of the body, sometimes selling for as much as $500 a pound
($1,100 a kilogram)," (Fairclough). While there are no national or international policies supporting shark finning, the limited effort by the Chinese
government to discourage consumption of shark fin soup indirectly contributes to the

Rob Stewart Sharkwater Analysis
The documentary film Sharkwater, which is directed and written by Rob Stewart, who is an award–winning biologist, photographer, conservationist
and filmmaker. Stewart from childhood was always interested in the life of the seas, and as a teenager, he started to photograph the underwater life.
Later on, at age 18 he became a scuba–diving trainer. Then from there he got a bachelor's degree in biology, and studied marine biology. In the
underwater seas, sharks really fascinated Stewart, but the first incident that leads him to start making this documentary film was the illegal long–lining
in the Galapagos Marine Reserve. This was the start from which he spent four years filming and studying sharks undercover and facing the shark
finning industry. Stewart has touched on a very serious topic that has caught a lot of attention, which is the extinction of sharks due to shark finning. In
which Stewart is trying to help protect the sharks and trying to get shark finning to be banned, as well as to change the image society has of sharks.

I personally thought this film was quite touching, and beautifully presented by Stewart. This was because of the extraordinary shots captured under
water of Stewart holding sharks in his arms and of the life undersea. Also that the film was quite emotionally appealing because of the shots of
poachers cutting off the fins of sharks and just throwing them off in the water to die. I agree with all the views Stewart has on this and regret that "I
hated being afraid" (Stewart) of sharks because of the myths I had in my mind. Some of the other views I agree with Stewart are that Shark finning

Sharks In The Movie Jaws
Sharks are well known for their role in the movie Jaws, but real life sharks are anything but a human killing machine. According to the authors Steve
and Jane Parker from "The Encyclopedia of Sharks", various kinds of sharks have been around for many years, even going way back from 600 million
years according to fossil records (page 14) . Yes, it's true that swimming near ashark might not sound appealing in any way as it sounds dangerous
right? It turns out that we humans are more of a threat to sharks than they are to us, as they only cost 30 percent BUT with only 4 percent of the attacks
will result in death according to the data produced by The Australian Shark Attack File (ASAF). Even though people view sharks as a threat, the recent

The Shark : The Predator Of The Sea
Over 350 million years ago, the shark species has been labeled as the apex predator of the sea. With the increase in human population the demand for
shark meat and fins are at an all time high therefore, the existence of the shark is becoming a concern. Individuals are observing to think of sharks as a
negative feature to the environment, which is prolonging the effect to prevent shark species from becoming extinct. With that in mind, not only are
human over–fishing sharks, but also the CO2 emission into the ocean are also at an all time high and quickly rising. Some private as well as national
organizations have accepted the challenge of educating and informing individuals concerning the existence of the shark specie and also the effect of
ocean acidification to its importance to the sea.
The ocean's ecosystem is made up of complex food webs, which the sharks play a vital role in. Sharks are at the top of the food chain in nearly
every part of every ocean. They keep populations of other fish healthy and assure that those fish stay in their own part ecosystem. We are beginning
to see a large epidemic, where sharks are being eliminated, ultimately engendering the balance of the marine ecosystem. In the parts of the ocean that
sharks have been heavily fished, there is clear evidence of an unbalanced marine ecosystem. Sharks are being killed for their fins for shark fin soup, it
is said that, "many fishermen prefer to practice shark finning instead of bringing whole sharks to

Shark Attack Research Paper
First and foremost, humans are pushing sharks out of their homes and further inland, causing shark attacks. One piece of evidence that stuck out to me
was, oil spills cause sharks and other fish to swim inland, because when a shark swims through oil, the oil layers on top of the gills. Therefore, they
can not breath, imagine trying to breathe through your mouth with a water bottle over it filled with water. It's not possible to breath without sucking in
water, it is like the same thing for sharks with oil. It is important to note this, because the freshest water for a shark or any fish to swim in is toward the
shoreline, they would have to swim in this water to be able to breath. Furthermore, "five or six people die each year from a shark, around 100,000,000
sharks die each year from humans", fisherman on boats to this day, still real sharks in and cut their dorsal fins off. Along with that, sharks will swim

One piece of evidence I found was, mostly all shark attacks are cases of mistaken identity. A shark could bite a thrashing leg or arm, and as soon as
it realizes what's in it mouth is not a fish, it lets go. On top of that, sharks get drawn by the sound of distressed fish, that is also the same sound a
shark will here when a surfer is paddling into a wave. The final example to note is, when a shark sees a surfer in a wetsuit it has to decid to attack
full force, or they can swim closer to try to find out what is is. In some cases the shark will be curious enough to brush up against the fish or
person, but dosen't mean to cause harm. A good way to show that sharks don't want to cause harm is it like being licked by a dog, the dog is trying
to figure out what you are. Still, sharks are being blamed for attacks that aren't their fault, you wouldn't blame a curious one year old for knocking
over a glass, but you would think its a shark's fault when it attacks a

Commodity is defined as buying and selling raw or agriculture products such as coffee, gold and aluminum. There are two types of commodity soft
commodity and hard commodity. Soft commodities are agriculture items such as rice, rubber, and wool while hard commodities are raw materials
such as gold, oil, aluminum. Also some commodities are needed and others are wanted and an example of needed commodities is water, food and
wanted commodities are like shark fins. Shark finning must be bended; it's only wanted as a commodity, most people don't need it for that much to

blood can affect other species and the ocean. The decrease of sharks has an effect over specific species where this can influence the rest of the

Summary Of A Literal Shark-Huger
A Literal Shark–Hugger Rob Stewart embarked on a mission to expose the clandestine nature of the illegal shark finning industry. He did so through his
photography, videography and writing. Stewart made multiple documentaries including Sharkwater and Revolution. Stewart also wrote Sharkwater and
Save the Humans. Stewart's actions of exposing the shark finning industry did not go unnoticed by the public or individuals profiting from the illegal
shark finning industry. Stewart was arrested in Costa Rica for filming the illegal poaching of sharks. The poachers remain free and unscathed to this day
by their documented crimes.
Stewart's mission was to bring public awareness to the dwindling shark populations. His work was meant to bring change to public policy, as well
as to educate the public. Prior to Stewart, many were unaware that conservation programs were needed to protect sharks. Sharks are pivotal to
marine ecosystems as apex predators. Sharks have played a major role as predators for hundreds of millions of years. One of the major contributions
these apex predators have made to their ecosystem is the evolution of their prey spanning back to the dinosaurs. While sharks have remained
relatively unchanged for hundreds of millions of years, their prey has been continually evolving. Stewart's recent death displays a story that must be
told of one man's journey to protect the most feared and misunderstood creature in the oceans. The appeal of sharks for Steward was more than simply
a want to help preserve the environment. He viewed sharks as an amazing example of evolution. Sharks have survived four extinction events and have
been in existence for 450 million years. (Cave, 2015) Sharks have outlived the dinosaurs and laid witness to changing oceans, environments and even
prey. Sharks haven't had major predation since the time of the dinosaurs. However, this recently changed when shark fins began fetching large sums
of money. Sharks are being harvested in an irresponsible and unsustainable way. Many species of shark could go extinct within our lifetime.
Overfishing has caused a dramatic decline of 90% for shark populations worldwide and up to a 99% decline on the US East Coast. (Jha, 2008) This

its time. Since then Walt Disney Parks and Resorts (WDPR) has become a world leader, opening 6 Disneyland's with 12 theme parks and 52 resorts
across North America, Europe, and Asia. The Disneyland involved in this case study was the second built in Asia,Hong Kong Disneyland (HKD). The
problem facing HKD and moreover WDPR was their inclusion of shark fin soup in the Chinese–banquet style reception of their Fairy Tale Wedding
package. Although, culturally this dish is a Chinese staple HKD faced severe backlash from environmentalists worldwide including Hong Kong. The
reason for conducting their program was because of protests and worldwide criticism from environmental groups. Disney's program was reactive
because the addition of shark fin soup in their Chinese wedding reception banquet was an attempt to incorporate a cultural mainstay which obviously
rebounded resulting in their reacting to criticism instead of anticipating it. It's unclear from the case study whether HKD researched this topic before
it became an issue but it is evident they did research this topic during the campaign consisting of secondary research that was regurgitated as part of
their program. Although in hindsight it is hard to believe HKD would have been oblivious to what seemed like a very controversial dish in Asia. The

Shark Fin Essay
Introduction Shark fin soup is a significant part of the tradition of Chinese food culture. Shark fin has been considered as a precious delicacy since
the Han Dynasty over 2200 years ago (Spiegel 2001:411). Cheung and Chang (2011:345) explains that shark fin is the symbol of wealth, good fortune,
people's taste and social status in China. "The consumption of luxury seafood in contemporary China is intertwined with broader historical trends"
(Fabinyi 2012:83). Shark fin apparently has become a much popular and common luxury dish consumed at banquets in China today (Fabinyi
2012:88). However, as the Chinese economy growth over the last two decades, the consumption rates of shark fin are increasing (Fabinyi and Liu
2014:218). The cruel slaughter by fishermen has imperiled the populations of sharks and violated the rights of animal (Spiegel 2001:409). Many
countries have advocated a ban on shark finning (Spiegel 2001:424). Therefore, this paper will describe how shark fin culture is interconnected with
consumers and business, and how shark fin culture is impacted under the controversy between conservation and prohibition of the Chinese shark fin
business.
Chinese and Shark Fin
There is an inseparable relationship between food, culture and business. Seafood is closely related to southern Chinese cuisine, in particular Cantonese
cuisine, which is regarded as one of the "great culinary traditions of China" and mainly found in Hong Kong and Guangzhou (Fabinyi and Liu
2014:224).

Pilot Fish And Diversity Research Paper
In the deep, dark, spooky ocean lives a gut–wrenching and petrifying great white shark. This monster of the deep swims menacingly in search for its
prey and devours its meal without leaving a single scrap of morsel. Then, there is the pilot fish, the great white's dependable companion, who works as
its dentist. The pilot fish will swim into the mouth of the shark and clean its enormous jaws from harmful parasites. In return, the great white shark will
provide the pilot fish with food and protection from its predators. This is a great example of harmony within diversity where the shark and pilot fish
are dependent on each other and they are able to live harmoniously regardless of their species. Harmony within diversity means oneness in varieties and

Robert Stewart Sharkwater
Sharkwater (2006) is a documentary that was filmed by Robert Stewart, a man who spent his whole life in the ocean fascinated by sharks. Stewart's
passion for sharks lead him to eventually become a marine biologist so he could spend his days scuba diving out in the ocean. His main goal shooting
this movie is to inform viewers about how sharks are being killed so brutally and to persuade watchers to help do something to keep the shark
population in tact. Stewart and his anti poaching crew try to evacuate the illegal fishermen out of the waters, help save the sharks, and raise awareness
about the mass killings of the sharks and their rapid declining population. People in the countries that he traveled to then rallied together to protest,
urging the government to create stricter laws. Stewarts' message has impacted the countries he's visited; with his excellent use of logos, pathos, and
mainly ethos he is able to impact even more people around the world.
Upon Stewart's arrival to the Galapagos Islands, his boat came across sixty feet of illegal fishing lines. Attached on the end of the lines were over
one–hundred and sixty dead sharks. In the background the sound of a slow piano played, adding to the intense scene. Stewarts instinct was to
spring into the water and offer immediate help to the sharks, he shifted through the dead animals trying to find one that might be alive to let it
loose. "I feel like a part of my family is dying." Stewart stated once he returned to his crew on the boat. This scene evokes emotion of sorrow and
pity for Stewart since he has such a strong emotional connection for the lives he's lost. Robert stated that Hammerheads are "The most misunderstood
species in the world." As the hammerheads swam circling around him it was evident that they were keeping their distance from Stewart. If he slightly
moved his arm or leg, the sharks would add more distance between them and him. Robert explained that Hammerhead sharks are extremely shy and
can sense others feelings, if you're scared then they will be too. Once Stewart said this, the typical stereotype of a ruthless shark was gone. During the
film Sharkwater there are several scenes where Stewart expresses his emotional connections to sharks,

The Pros And Cons Of Shark Finning
If you had to pick between buses or sharks, which would you think killed 1,082 people in 2013? If you chose sharks, you are wrong. Sharks only
killed 2 people in 2013, compared to the 1,082 killed by a bus. (A. Kasprak, 2015) Sharks are portrayed as ruthless and merciless killers. But what if
we found out that instead of them being the predators, that they are our prey? Humans have been hunting sharks for as long as we have known they
exist. Now, they are becoming rare and some are even extinct. The main reason of this isshark finning. Shark fins are in high demand, so more sharks
get killed every year. What we do not realize though is that without sharks, the whole ecosystem will change and maybe even fall apart. Many people

The sharks are alive while all this is done so they feel everything. Not only are they in extreme pain, they usually die a few hours after having their
fins cut off. They sink to the bottom and either bleed to death or suffocate. Sharks use their fins to swim. Without them, they cannot swim so they just
sink to the bottom after having their fins cut off, while struggling and trying to swim but to no avail. Sharks need to swim in order to breathe because
they get oxygen from the water as they swim and the water flows into their gills. They cannot breathe if they are laying at the bottom of the ocean not
being able to move because their fins have been cut off. This is not only inhumane, but it introduces the argument of how wasteful this practice is.
Shark finning takes the fins of a shark and dumps the rest of it back into the ocean, like garbage. The rest of the shark body has parts that can be used.
Sharks are being fished anyways along with shark finning. So that makes the number of sharks being killed double the number that they should and that
they can be.

The Ethics Of Shark Finning Should Be Stopped
Many of the issues that we hear about in class have been with four legged land animals, but there are many problems that take place in the ocean that
deserve our attention also. I believe these oceanic problems are less acknowledged because we know less about the ocean then we do about the earth.
Shark finning is the practice of cutting off fins of live sharks and then throwing the sharks back into the water, to soon die. This treatment that is done
to sharks is so inhumane because it is treating the animals in an unnatural way and allows humans to determine that our lives are more important than
theirs. Also, the shark is an apex predator, which means that if their population continues to decrease because of this trade many other species will feel
the effect. Lastly, if people know that this action is happening and they are not doing anything to stop it, then in the future other inhumane practices
will see no punishments. The practice of shark finning should be stopped because it is inhumane, threatens the stability of the ecosystem, and promotes
the mistreatment of animals. When people hear the word shark an immediate panic and fear comes over them. Sharks have a bad reputation and that
reputation does not help them escape this problem because with this negative condensation many people do not care that we are hurting dangerous
animals. This is ironic to me because we kill over 100 millions sharks a year, yet they are the killing animals. In truth shark attacks and

Environmental scientists look for ways to better our world and protect our ecosystem from human destruction. Debate on the regulation of species,
climate change, and how to lower emissions, are all things that environmental scientists look at. One of the most recent crisis', is a problem not within
the US, but takes place in China and other parts of Asia, a practice called shark finning. This is where sharks are captured, have their fins removed for
food, and then are thrown back into the ocean, alive, to sink and die. The people of China use these fins for food and other medical reasons. Since
the process of finning sharks is so easy, the people of China are able to kill them off very quickly.

So, when people of China say that the cartilage of marine life and shark fins can cure cancer, the last thought is to stop getting shark fins. Rather it
pushes for a stronger want of obtaining shark fins for testing and treatment. This theory is not backed by scientific evidence that directly correlates the
use of shark fins or other marine life, to the recovery of a cancer patient. Plus, the United States does participate in animal testing for medical advances,
and it has never been discovered that shark fins can cure cancer. If this belief were true, the US and many other countries would be joining in on this
scientific theory. In fact, shark fins, mainly presented in the form of shark fin soup, have shown to have negative health effects on humans. Some of

Argumentative Essay: Should Sharks Be Culled?
Exposition: Whether sharks should be culled or not has become one of the most controversial issues in modern society. However it has become
significantly more apparent that sharks should not be killed and this expository will be focusing on why sharks should not be culled. If the top
predator of a food chain is removed, then that may cause the end of many more species. By removing the top predator of the food chain, this
interrupts and disrupts the entire food chain and the animals on it. Firstly, sharks play a significantly important role in the ocean as most sharks serve
as top predators and are at the top of the food pyramid and so they play a vital role in the ocean ecosystems. They hunt old, weak and or sick fishes in

Shark Finning Is Killing Sharks
Are you scared of sharks? Well, there is approximately 5 human deaths, shark related each year, but over 100 million sharks are killed each year by
humans. Who should really be scared? Shark finning is killing sharks and decreasing their populations to a level where they may never fully recover.
Causes for this are fishermen shark finning at a very high rate and for consumers being oblivious to the situation or what had to be done for them to eat
the shark fin soup. Sharks are being harmed by humans cutting off their fin, also known as shark finning to make a Chinese delicacy called shark fin

Media reportings are constantly telling us about shark sightings, and when an attack does happen either blowing it out of proportions or not telling the
full story on how the human could have been at fault. Movies such as Jaws, Jurassic Shark, Mega Shark Versus Giant Octopus, Hammerhead
/SharkMan, Bait, Shark Night, Sharknado and Reef are all films that delineate sharks as terrifying, horrid, oversized, and vengeful creatures that go
after humans with only the intent to kill and eat.
The three stakeholders in the shark finning situation are the consumers and fishermen which believe shark finning should not be banned and the
environmentalists which believe shark finning should be banned. Consumers believe that shark finning should not be banned because for the majority
of them they believe it is part of their culture and that it will provide health benefits which are just a myth. There is no scientific evidence proving that

Persuasive Essay On Shark Finning
Sharks have been swimming the ocean since just about the beginning of life on planet earth itself. They are an anomalous species having survived all
five mass extinctions that planet earth has endured, but, will they survive the human race? There is a large demand for only pieces or parts of the
shark, particularly shark fin, prominently in Chinese and
Hawaiian cultures. Shark–fin soup is a high priced delicacy that has only death and destruction behind the process that manifests it. Shark finning needs
to be banned where it is not already and for places that do have regulations in place, they need to be heavily reinforced. By banning shark finning
worldwide, governments and unions of the world could ensure the protection of these important aquatic species from further endangerment, stop the
domino effect that is destroying our oceanic ecosystem, and stop the cruelty of unloading still–live sharks without fins into the ocean to be eaten alive.
II. By banning shark finning worldwide, governments and regulators around the world could ensure the protection of these essential aquatic species
from further endangerment.

"An estimated 100 million sharks are killed every year around the world, a number that far exceeds what many populations need to recover." said Dan

mistaken identity, but we kill them on purpose. That is unfair.Sharks should be protected. Sharks do kill about 15 people each year. People believe that

The Horror of Shark Finning Essay
Did you know that sharks have been here longer than us humans? Sharks have been swimming the oceans for hundreds to millions of years before
the first humans are said to have appeared on land. Unfortunately the shark population has been decreasing due to the shark fishing market. People
have often thought sharks as predators to the human race; but truthfully, we should fear living in a world with no sharks. Occasionally, over 100
million sharks are killed by humans. These sharks are killed for their fins most of the time, which are considered to be one of the most expensive
seafood delicacies in China. However the ways of attaining these fins have caused controversies all over the world. Shark finning is the term used when

With the rise in population of China, there are much more wealthy people in China. So shark fin soup is being used now more than ever. Alsoshark fin
soup isn't only sold in China, it is sold all over the world. Shark fin soup is a tradition, but also isn't needed. The flavor in shark fin soup comes
from the flavor of the broth used to make the soup, the fin only adds additional texture. It is preposterous to ask which is more important, a
traditional Chinese soup or the lives of millions of sharks. Although it's clearly not needed, many Chinese still defend shark finning. The problem
with shark finning is also connected with the citizens and fishermen. Instead of caring about the sharks, many people say that they are getting rid
of shark related attacks using shark finning. But it has been proven that there is only about 12 shark related deaths a year. Bees kill an average of
500 people a year, so it would be smarter to focus on attacks involving bees than shark attacks. People also claim that shark fins have medical
purposes when used. This may be true but using a shark fin medically isn't the absolute best remedy that could be used. A bowl of shark fin soup can
range to cost more than $100, depending on the quality of the fin. Although some places sell shark fin soup like a normal bowl of soup for $20. It can
be found at wealthy Chinese business meetings, to an average Chinatown. The shark fin industry has become like

Why Shark Fin Shark Should Be Banned
Sharks Fin Soup Should Be Banned
Shark fins consumption has led to the threat of extinction for many shark species. In Chinese culture, shark fins are harvested for the popular shark fin
soup, as well as in traditional medicinal cures, both of which are centuries old and hold significant cultural importance. Shark fin soup is a soup or
broth of Chinese origin made with shark fin and flavoured with chicken or some other ingredients. With the unexpected increase in fortune in the Far
East, shark fin soup is being consumed in vast amounts, placing an unverifiable and crippling demand on shark populations. In my point of view, I
absolutely agree with the statement that the consuming of shark fins should be banned. Hence, it would be interesting for us to provide an in–depth
discussion on the reason why shark fin soup should be banned because shark finning is an idiotic activity, it will hunt sharks into extinction and affects
the marine ecosystem.
First and foremost, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Shark fin is usually consumed in the form of soup by the Chinese. It is part of the Chinese culture to have shark fin soup in important days like
someone's wedding. If shark fin soup is banned, it might be racist and insolent to the Chinese culture. Furthermore, a lot of fishermen are relying on
shark finning to make ends meet. If shark finning gets barred, a lot of fisherman would be jobless and it is extremely hard for them to find a job.
Although sharks are becoming extinct and shark finning is seriously harmful the ecosystem of the sea, but it is not essential to embargo shark finning
completely. Some restriction of shark finning may have to be suggested to help increase the amount of sharks back to a quantity where overfishing
them won't be a problem, but banning it completely may just cause too much controversy against the Chinese cultural and all the shark finning

a) this is technique is where there's a long line with baited hooks that can stretch over 60 miles across the ocean.
b) Sharks try so hard to become unhooked that they end up suffocating themselves. Most of time the long lining is not meant to catch sharks but
other species, and so then the Sharks are just thrown back to ocean as a waste. This process is call bycatch. 3. Another way that sharks population is

The aquatic ecosystem is a mysterious place that has not been fully discovered and it won't be if sharks are still getting finned. This ecosystem is a

The global shark finning industry comes in as a threat to the ocean's ecosystem using this cruelty for Asian luxurious views and soups. Finning is the
practice of removing the fin off the shark's body and after, the fishers dispose them back in the ocean causing them to drown. The act of finning sharks
comes in as a negative view considering that the shark population is decreasing, is affecting other populations as well, and it comes in as animal
cruelty. "The fins then travel hundreds of miles away, usually to Asiatic countries, where they are sold to create delicacies likeshark fin soup. Hong
Kong is the biggest market for fins, and controls roughly 50% of the shark fin trade. There, fins may sell for 330 US dollars a pound, and the soup
that follows can cost up to 100 US dollars per bowl." Although there are many organizations to stop it, fining sadly is still legal in some countries.

Why Should We Ban Shark Finning?
Sharks. Not many people stop to consider it, but they actually play a large role in the ocean ecosystem and in our lives. When most people think
sharks, they think of the movie Jaws or other horror shark films. Those movies and shows, of course, are created to be dramatic and far fetched from
the truth. They give sharks the image of being blood thirsty killing machines, attacking and hunting humans for no apparent reason other than to kill
when, in reality, it's actually often the humans that can be the monsters.
Shark finning is is a cruel and barbaric practice that involves sharks being hooked and dragged into boats and having their fins sliced off while they
are still alive. Once this is done, the rest of the shark is thrown overboard to die a slow, painful death. A group of conservationists that run an awareness

Every year, in oceans around the world, millions of sharks are hunted to meet the demand for shark fin soup. Shark fins are targets for fishermen
because they not only have monetary value but there is a demand for this species within some cultures. The fins are used in a Chinese dish called
shark fin soup which is a popular dish in this country that creates a status symbol for those who were able to consume it. Many fishermen practice shark
finning primarily for the fins, although some fishermen can find use for the entire shark, most fishermen cut off the fins and discard the rest of the
shark back into the depths. This is, honestly, a form of animal cruelty. Thesharks do not die a peaceful death; they are unable to swim properly

In a panic you burst outside and are immediately met with another blow to the face. You fall to the floor hitting your head again, this time you know

you're unable to move. All you can do is anticipate the sheer horror these men are about to inflict on your loved ones. "Why?!!!" you cry. One by one,
and limb by limb, these men butcher and dismember their bodies while they're still alive. Screams turn into muffled noises. The men are merciless and
un–phased by the gruesome scene that's taken place in front of you, you even hear laughter from a few of them. Gathering their arms and legs into
bags in a rather quick fashion, they toss your loved ones bodies in a pile in the yard like they were throwing out the trash. Bleeding out and left to die.
In complete shock and mortified by what you've just witnessed, you can't articulate what's happening. The men then turn their attention toward you, and
you've realized that you're next.
As atrocious of a crime as this sounds, this is a grim reality that many marine life, more specifically sharks, face on a daily basis around the world.

The Loss Of The Shark Population
Within the past four decades the severity of the loss of the shark population has become a more prominent issue as research has been conducted. The
main contributor to the decline of the shark population is due to the exploitation of sharks through over fishing and finning. Shark finning is the
process of catching sharks while fishing, then removing the fins from the body of the shark and throwing the carcass back to sea, thus causing the
sharks to drown. The purpose of this research was to look further into the East Asian cultural aspects that affect the practice of shark finning as well as
what could potentially be done to protect the shark species in the future. Through the research conducted I was able to come to the conclusion that ...

used USA.gov, Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstract, Bibliography of Asian Studies Online, and Web of Science. Each of these databases
proved to be useful in their own ways. From One Search I moved towards the Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstract (ASFA), the articles that I
found in this database were a good starting point to understanding the anatomical and physiological aspects of sharks. As my research progressed I
found that the majority of the articles that I had originally found through this database were not relevant to my research question. I was able to
focus in my research from "sharks" to "shark finning" and then ultimately "shark finning within East Asian culture", and as my research question
became more focused I was able to find more specific articles that were relevant. Web of Science was also a useful tool to use as well. It was nice
being able to take an article that had good information in it and see where else it had been cited. Through this database I was able to find a few more
articles that were useful. It became clear through research that

Local & Global Commodity Chains: Shark Fins
The production and consumption of any good can be traced by the demand that people have for that good, on both a local and global scale. However,
many factors affect the demand; on the local scale factors such as the cultural significance the good holds with the people, and on the global scale the
environmental impacts of the production of the good can cause repercussions that ultimately disturb the demand. One such good are shark fins.
The ever obscure commodity chain of producing and consuming shark fins has been a controversial topic in the Asia community and in the global

Shark Finning Persuasive Speech

  • 1. Shark Persuasive Speech Roaming the oceans, a certain species leaves millions dead in its wake, leaving the seas red with blood. Of course, I'm talking about humans. The imagery would undoubtedly make majority of people picture a rampaging shark, a common fear shared by many, but is this terror justified? Globally, only around 6 people die because of shark attacks each year, nevertheless, humans kill a staggering 100 million sharks annually, and that's only the reported statistic. At such a rate, sharks are being killed off at a faster rate than they can recover, due to the fact that sharks mature at a slow pace and birth only a few large pups during their lifetime; this will to lead to the imminent demise of the species unless we abandon our barbaric ways. Is there really reason to exterminate this magnificent species permanently? ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The process involves the catching of the shark, and cutting all of its fins off, leaving it completely immobile and vulnerable. After the harvesting of its valuable features, they finally roll the newly disabled shark back into the sea, even though it is often still alive and suffering. As the shark cannot swim or move at all, it only options is to act as bait for other animals or drift to the bottom and drown. The world doesn't treat other animals in this manner, what makes sharks qualify for this sort of abhorrent abuse? Although many European countries have banned shark meat, the trade still continues, with the price of shark fins ever increasing with the sinking populations. The trade is lucrative, with the produce selling at prices up to $650 for a single kilogram. The barbaric trade leaves estimated 73 million sharks slain for this exact purpose, with potentially even further casualties, as this is just the number reported by fishermen. While in the past accidental catches of shark were simply released, nowadays they are brutally disarmed and ditched to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Sharks Are Worth More Alive Than Dead Although out of fear or ignorance, some believe that sharks serve zero purpose, sharks are worth more alive than dead because sharks stabilize the underwater ecosystem, and increase economic growth. 1. It is a common belief in certain cultures that shark fins have health benefits, when in reality that's not true. With increasing levels of pollution entering into the oceans it's known that sharks absorb the pollution which create an unsafe level of mercury for humans to consume. Scientists at the University of Miami recently conducted a study to test the concentrations of two toxins– mercury and ОІ–N–methylamino–L–alanine (BMAA) – in 10 different sharks species located in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans ("Study Finds High Level of Neurotoxins," 2016). Deborah Mash, the senior author of the study and a Professor of Neurology stated, "Recent studies have linked BMAA to neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)," Contrary to cultures that believe shark fins contain health benefits, it's been proven that there's a direct link between consumption of shark meat to neurodegenerative diseases. The evidence provided above proves to the earlier statement that there are no health benefits, and that in fact, it may cause a increase damage to human health. Conservationists across the globe have presented the notion that sharks are worth more alive than dead, because of the economic growth that shark ecotourism brings in. "The study ... • 3. Reflection Of Sharks And Stingrays Mass extinction is defined as a moment in time where a widespread event wipes out the majority of living plants and animals. There have been five extinctions and no matter what, it's just bound to happen. I have always believed that extinctions are really a normal part of evolution. However, after watching this documentary, extinctions are happening at a faster rate than usual. We, humans, are the very ones that are contributing to it. Doing everyday things that we don't even think about would affect the world. Technology is so advanced today that we are able to fix things and save species. But then again, how do you save species when there is at least over 8 million species on earth? How do you decide which one to save? Where do you even begin? I have never heard about shark fin soup until I watched this documentary. I was very disturbed with what I saw. I searched on Google for what shark fin soup was, apart from it clearly having shark in it. I was curious to know what was so important about it that people are killing sharks just for their fins. From what I read, Shark fin soup is a luxury item in the Chinese culture and is usually served at weddings and banquets. According to Wikipedia, "The shark fins provide texture, while the taste comes from the other soup ingredients". So I have a lot to share about this topic. To begin with, Sharks and Stingrays are a taboo for my family line. When I was little, my great grandmother fell off a boat out at sea and went missing. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Argumentative Essay On Shark Finning Shark finning is the process of cutting off the fins of a shark and discarding the body at sea ("Stop Shark Finning", 2009). People catch sharks for its fins, meat, oil, skin and so on. Sharks fins are most commonly used in Asian cooking which is shark fin soup. According to Maddalena, Sommeran and Leander (2007), people have been demanding for shark fins dramatically recently, it is unclear how many sharks are caught annually but some of the conservationists estimate the number to be upwards of 100 million. Besides, shark conservationists are aware about the consequences of the high demand of shark fins, they advocate people to stop killing sharks and eating shark fins. Practice of shark finning is causing imbalance marine ecosystems and it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to Latchford (2013) research, he states that the difficulty in preparation and the length of time taken to prepare certain food also represent its uniqueness and allure in Chinese culture. However, to say that shark fin soup is part of the traditional culture for the majority of the Chinese is disingenuous because most of the Chinese is not in a financial position to consume this dish. The consumption of this dish has only risen for the last few decades. According to Sharks at risk (2013) although it is traditionally an expensive dish (with a price tag upwards of US$100 a bowl), it is increasingly sold more cheaply and as economies grow in Asia, a dish once reserved for the elite is now available to many more consumers and is in demand in many Asian communities around the world. Global trade in shark fins is increasing, and the market for shark fin soup is estimated to be growing by 5% per year ("Stop Shark Fining"). Hence, even shark fins are used in traditional dish in Chinese culture but it is not the reason that causing sustained demand of shark fins; it is because of people irresponsible consumption of shark fin soup and it is a main source of income for certain developing ... • 5. Research Paper On Shark Finning "For decades, sharks have gotten a raw deal on the high seas, where fishermen have butchered them alive by the hundreds of millions and thrown their carcasses overboard, keeping only the prized fins to sell to Asian markets." (Bland) The practice of shark finning is used mostly for shark fin soup, a Chinese delicacy that dates back to the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644). Shark fin soup is considered a symbol of wealth and social status and it has been served over the years at special events like weddings, formal balls, and government banquets. Only since the 1990s, have people begun to promote awareness of the horrors of shark finning. Shark finning involves cutting off a live shark's fins and then throwing the still–live shark back into the ocean where they die a slow and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... More than 600 years ago, shark fin soup became popular amongst Chinese royalty. Chinese emperors liked to serve the soup to special guests because they believed it had medicinal benefits and represented wealth and power. Over time, shark fin soup became popular not just with royalty and the wealthy, but also with the middle class, when they celebrated weddings, graduations, and other important events. Today "[in] Hong Kong, Beijing, Taiwan, Singapore and other corners of Asian affluence...a heaping bowl of shark fin soup, said to offer medicinal or aphrodisiac qualities, is dished up for up to $200," (Forero). This high price is a huge motivator for fisherman. "Many fishermen prefer to practice shark finning instead of bringing whole sharks to the market because the fins are far more valuable than the rest of the body, sometimes selling for as much as $500 a pound ($1,100 a kilogram)," (Fairclough). While there are no national or international policies supporting shark finning, the limited effort by the Chinese government to discourage consumption of shark fin soup indirectly contributes to the ... • 6. Rob Stewart Sharkwater Analysis The documentary film Sharkwater, which is directed and written by Rob Stewart, who is an award–winning biologist, photographer, conservationist and filmmaker. Stewart from childhood was always interested in the life of the seas, and as a teenager, he started to photograph the underwater life. Later on, at age 18 he became a scuba–diving trainer. Then from there he got a bachelor's degree in biology, and studied marine biology. In the underwater seas, sharks really fascinated Stewart, but the first incident that leads him to start making this documentary film was the illegal long–lining in the Galapagos Marine Reserve. This was the start from which he spent four years filming and studying sharks undercover and facing the shark finning industry. Stewart has touched on a very serious topic that has caught a lot of attention, which is the extinction of sharks due to shark finning. In which Stewart is trying to help protect the sharks and trying to get shark finning to be banned, as well as to change the image society has of sharks. This documentary film was released in 2006, and at ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I personally thought this film was quite touching, and beautifully presented by Stewart. This was because of the extraordinary shots captured under water of Stewart holding sharks in his arms and of the life undersea. Also that the film was quite emotionally appealing because of the shots of poachers cutting off the fins of sharks and just throwing them off in the water to die. I agree with all the views Stewart has on this and regret that "I hated being afraid" (Stewart) of sharks because of the myths I had in my mind. Some of the other views I agree with Stewart are that Shark finning should be made illegal or banned all over the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Sharks In The Movie Jaws Sharks are well known for their role in the movie Jaws, but real life sharks are anything but a human killing machine. According to the authors Steve and Jane Parker from "The Encyclopedia of Sharks", various kinds of sharks have been around for many years, even going way back from 600 million years according to fossil records (page 14) . Yes, it's true that swimming near ashark might not sound appealing in any way as it sounds dangerous right? It turns out that we humans are more of a threat to sharks than they are to us, as they only cost 30 percent BUT with only 4 percent of the attacks will result in death according to the data produced by The Australian Shark Attack File (ASAF). Even though people view sharks as a threat, the recent ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. The Shark : The Predator Of The Sea Over 350 million years ago, the shark species has been labeled as the apex predator of the sea. With the increase in human population the demand for shark meat and fins are at an all time high therefore, the existence of the shark is becoming a concern. Individuals are observing to think of sharks as a negative feature to the environment, which is prolonging the effect to prevent shark species from becoming extinct. With that in mind, not only are human over–fishing sharks, but also the CO2 emission into the ocean are also at an all time high and quickly rising. Some private as well as national organizations have accepted the challenge of educating and informing individuals concerning the existence of the shark specie and also the effect of ocean acidification to its importance to the sea. The ocean's ecosystem is made up of complex food webs, which the sharks play a vital role in. Sharks are at the top of the food chain in nearly every part of every ocean. They keep populations of other fish healthy and assure that those fish stay in their own part ecosystem. We are beginning to see a large epidemic, where sharks are being eliminated, ultimately engendering the balance of the marine ecosystem. In the parts of the ocean that sharks have been heavily fished, there is clear evidence of an unbalanced marine ecosystem. Sharks are being killed for their fins for shark fin soup, it is said that, "many fishermen prefer to practice shark finning instead of bringing whole sharks to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Shark Attack Research Paper First and foremost, humans are pushing sharks out of their homes and further inland, causing shark attacks. One piece of evidence that stuck out to me was, oil spills cause sharks and other fish to swim inland, because when a shark swims through oil, the oil layers on top of the gills. Therefore, they can not breath, imagine trying to breathe through your mouth with a water bottle over it filled with water. It's not possible to breath without sucking in water, it is like the same thing for sharks with oil. It is important to note this, because the freshest water for a shark or any fish to swim in is toward the shoreline, they would have to swim in this water to be able to breath. Furthermore, "five or six people die each year from a shark, around 100,000,000 sharks die each year from humans", fisherman on boats to this day, still real sharks in and cut their dorsal fins off. Along with that, sharks will swim into the shore trying to find ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One piece of evidence I found was, mostly all shark attacks are cases of mistaken identity. A shark could bite a thrashing leg or arm, and as soon as it realizes what's in it mouth is not a fish, it lets go. On top of that, sharks get drawn by the sound of distressed fish, that is also the same sound a shark will here when a surfer is paddling into a wave. The final example to note is, when a shark sees a surfer in a wetsuit it has to decid to attack full force, or they can swim closer to try to find out what is is. In some cases the shark will be curious enough to brush up against the fish or person, but dosen't mean to cause harm. A good way to show that sharks don't want to cause harm is it like being licked by a dog, the dog is trying to figure out what you are. Still, sharks are being blamed for attacks that aren't their fault, you wouldn't blame a curious one year old for knocking over a glass, but you would think its a shark's fault when it attacks a ... • 10. Shark Finning Essay Commodity is defined as buying and selling raw or agriculture products such as coffee, gold and aluminum. There are two types of commodity soft commodity and hard commodity. Soft commodities are agriculture items such as rice, rubber, and wool while hard commodities are raw materials such as gold, oil, aluminum. Also some commodities are needed and others are wanted and an example of needed commodities is water, food and wanted commodities are like shark fins. Shark finning must be bended; it's only wanted as a commodity, most people don't need it for that much to live. • 11. Summary Of A Literal Shark-Huger A Literal Shark–Hugger Rob Stewart embarked on a mission to expose the clandestine nature of the illegal shark finning industry. He did so through his photography, videography and writing. Stewart made multiple documentaries including Sharkwater and Revolution. Stewart also wrote Sharkwater and Save the Humans. Stewart's actions of exposing the shark finning industry did not go unnoticed by the public or individuals profiting from the illegal shark finning industry. Stewart was arrested in Costa Rica for filming the illegal poaching of sharks. The poachers remain free and unscathed to this day by their documented crimes. Stewart's mission was to bring public awareness to the dwindling shark populations. His work was meant to bring change to public policy, as well as to educate the public. Prior to Stewart, many were unaware that conservation programs were needed to protect sharks. Sharks are pivotal to marine ecosystems as apex predators. Sharks have played a major role as predators for hundreds of millions of years. One of the major contributions these apex predators have made to their ecosystem is the evolution of their prey spanning back to the dinosaurs. While sharks have remained relatively unchanged for hundreds of millions of years, their prey has been continually evolving. Stewart's recent death displays a story that must be told of one man's journey to protect the most feared and misunderstood creature in the oceans. The appeal of sharks for Steward was more than simply a want to help preserve the environment. He viewed sharks as an amazing example of evolution. Sharks have survived four extinction events and have been in existence for 450 million years. (Cave, 2015) Sharks have outlived the dinosaurs and laid witness to changing oceans, environments and even prey. Sharks haven't had major predation since the time of the dinosaurs. However, this recently changed when shark fins began fetching large sums of money. Sharks are being harvested in an irresponsible and unsustainable way. Many species of shark could go extinct within our lifetime. Overfishing has caused a dramatic decline of 90% for shark populations worldwide and up to a 99% decline on the US East Coast. The Disneyland involved in this case study was the second built in Asia,Hong Kong Disneyland (HKD). The problem facing HKD and moreover WDPR was their inclusion of shark fin soup in the Chinese–banquet style reception of their Fairy Tale Wedding package. Although, culturally this dish is a Chinese staple HKD faced severe backlash from environmentalists worldwide including Hong Kong. The reason for conducting their program was because of protests and worldwide criticism from environmental groups. Disney's program was reactive because the addition of shark fin soup in their Chinese wedding reception banquet was an attempt to incorporate a cultural mainstay which obviously rebounded resulting in their reacting to criticism instead of anticipating it. It's unclear from the case study whether HKD researched this topic before it became an issue but it is evident they did research this topic during the campaign consisting of secondary research that was regurgitated as part of their program. • 13. Shark Fin Essay Introduction Shark fin soup is a significant part of the tradition of Chinese food culture. Shark fin has been considered as a precious delicacy since the Han Dynasty over 2200 years ago (Spiegel 2001:411). Cheung and Chang (2011:345) explains that shark fin is the symbol of wealth, good fortune, people's taste and social status in China. "The consumption of luxury seafood in contemporary China is intertwined with broader historical trends" (Fabinyi 2012:83). Shark fin apparently has become a much popular and common luxury dish consumed at banquets in China today (Fabinyi 2012:88). However, as the Chinese economy growth over the last two decades, the consumption rates of shark fin are increasing (Fabinyi and Liu 2014:218). The cruel slaughter by fishermen has imperiled the populations of sharks and violated the rights of animal (Spiegel 2001:409). Many countries have advocated a ban on shark finning (Spiegel 2001:424). Therefore, this paper will describe how shark fin culture is interconnected with consumers and business, and how shark fin culture is impacted under the controversy between conservation and prohibition of the Chinese shark fin business. Chinese and Shark Fin There is an inseparable relationship between food, culture and business. Seafood is closely related to southern Chinese cuisine, in particular Cantonese cuisine, which is regarded as one of the "great culinary traditions of China" and mainly found in Hong Kong and Guangzhou (Fabinyi and Liu 2014:224). ... The pilot fish will swim into the mouth of the shark and clean its enormous jaws from harmful parasites. It is time for parents to teach their children early on that in diversity, lies beauty and strength. Thus, harmony within diversity is undeniably significant for multiracial countries all over the world. Without this critical virtue, countries and lands of diverse races, religions, castes and cultures will not be able to live concomitantly. • 16. Robert Stewart Sharkwater Sharkwater (2006) is a documentary that was filmed by Robert Stewart, a man who spent his whole life in the ocean fascinated by sharks. Stewart's passion for sharks lead him to eventually become a marine biologist so he could spend his days scuba diving out in the ocean. His main goal shooting this movie is to inform viewers about how sharks are being killed so brutally and to persuade watchers to help do something to keep the shark population in tact. Stewart and his anti poaching crew try to evacuate the illegal fishermen out of the waters, help save the sharks, and raise awareness about the mass killings of the sharks and their rapid declining population. People in the countries that he traveled to then rallied together to protest, urging the government to create stricter laws. Stewarts' message has impacted the countries he's visited; with his excellent use of logos, pathos, and mainly ethos he is able to impact even more people around the world. Upon Stewart's arrival to the Galapagos Islands, his boat came across sixty feet of illegal fishing lines. Attached on the end of the lines were over one–hundred and sixty dead sharks. In the background the sound of a slow piano played, adding to the intense scene. Stewarts instinct was to spring into the water and offer immediate help to the sharks, he shifted through the dead animals trying to find one that might be alive to let it loose. "I feel like a part of my family is dying." Stewart stated once he returned to his crew on the boat. This scene evokes emotion of sorrow and pity for Stewart since he has such a strong emotional connection for the lives he's lost. Robert stated that Hammerheads are "The most misunderstood species in the world." As the hammerheads swam circling around him it was evident that they were keeping their distance from Stewart. If he slightly moved his arm or leg, the sharks would add more distance between them and him. Robert explained that Hammerhead sharks are extremely shy and can sense others feelings, if you're scared then they will be too. Once Stewart said this, the typical stereotype of a ruthless shark was gone. During the film Sharkwater there are several scenes where Stewart expresses his emotional connections to sharks, ... Sharks only killed 2 people in 2013, compared to the 1,082 killed by a bus. (A. Kasprak, 2015) Sharks are portrayed as ruthless and merciless killers. But what if we found out that instead of them being the predators, that they are our prey? Humans have been hunting sharks for as long as we have known they exist. Now, they are becoming rare and some are even extinct. The main reason of this isshark finning. Shark fins are in high demand, so more sharks get killed every year. Without them, they cannot swim so they just sink to the bottom after having their fins cut off, while struggling and trying to swim but to no avail. Sharks need to swim in order to breathe because they get oxygen from the water as they swim and the water flows into their gills. They cannot breathe if they are laying at the bottom of the ocean not being able to move because their fins have been cut off. This is not only inhumane, but it introduces the argument of how wasteful this practice is. Shark finning takes the fins of a shark and dumps the rest of it back into the ocean, like garbage. The Ethics Of Shark Finning Should Be Stopped Many of the issues that we hear about in class have been with four legged land animals, but there are many problems that take place in the ocean that deserve our attention also. I believe these oceanic problems are less acknowledged because we know less about the ocean then we do about the earth. Shark finning is the practice of cutting off fins of live sharks and then throwing the sharks back into the water, to soon die. This treatment that is done to sharks is so inhumane because it is treating the animals in an unnatural way and allows humans to determine that our lives are more important than theirs. Also, the shark is an apex predator, which means that if their population continues to decrease because of this trade many other species will feel the effect. Lastly, if people know that this action is happening and they are not doing anything to stop it, then in the future other inhumane practices will see no punishments. The practice of shark finning should be stopped because it is inhumane, threatens the stability of the ecosystem, and promotes the mistreatment of animals. When people hear the word shark an immediate panic and fear comes over them. Sharks have a bad reputation and that reputation does not help them escape this problem because with this negative condensation many people do not care that we are hurting dangerous animals. • 34. Shark Fining Persuasive Essay Every year, in oceans around the world, millions of sharks are hunted to meet the demand for shark fin soup. Shark fins are targets for fishermen because they not only have monetary value but there is a demand for this species within some cultures. The fins are used in a Chinese dish called shark fin soup which is a popular dish in this country that creates a status symbol for those who were able to consume it. Many fishermen practice shark finning primarily for the fins, although some fishermen can find use for the entire shark, most fishermen cut off the fins and discard the rest of the shark back into the depths. This is, honestly, a form of animal cruelty. Thesharks do not die a peaceful death; they are unable to swim properly meaning they die from suffocation or blood loss. Shark fins go for about five–hundred dollars a pound, that's what the fishermen see, the money value. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Barely any progress has been made over the years to replenish this dying breed considering the amount of sharks killed every year. Sharks may rule the ocean, but they are incredibly venerable species. Sharks grow slowly and produce few young, often one offspring in a female shark's lifetime. With that being said, sharks are very susceptible to over harvesting. Over exploration is driving sharks to the brink of extinction, most populations are down by eighty percent. Tens of thousands, even millions, of sharks are killed each year and their meat, liver, fins, and other organs are harvested. Many fishermen are working for their own accord and they, more often than not, go unreported meaning catching and killing these creatures poses a significant threat to the shark ... • 35. Essay On Fin For Thought Fin for Thought Imagine this for a moment. Let's say it's the weekend, dusk is drawing near and you and your friends have got Sunday football on the television. Your wife is settling the kid's down to sleep for the night, after putting the food up and has already asked you politely to send the boys home more than once. You've had a couple of drinks, a belly full of stale potato chips and hot dogs and as you stumble to get up to go to the bathroom, you announce to your friends that it's about that time to retire for the night. Before plopping yourself onto the bed, you tell your kids goodnight and turn off the lights in the rest of the house. Your eyes start to get heavy as soon as your head meets the pillow, your wife is talking to you... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In a panic you burst outside and are immediately met with another blow to the face. You fall to the floor hitting your head again, this time you know you can't get up. Your eyes fixate on your family across the yard, screaming and crying and pleading to the men to stop. They call to you for help but you're unable to move. All you can do is anticipate the sheer horror these men are about to inflict on your loved ones. "Why?!!!" you cry. One by one, and limb by limb, these men butcher and dismember their bodies while they're still alive. Screams turn into muffled noises. The men are merciless and un–phased by the gruesome scene that's taken place in front of you, you even hear laughter from a few of them. Gathering their arms and legs into bags in a rather quick fashion, they toss your loved ones bodies in a pile in the yard like they were throwing out the trash. Bleeding out and left to die. In complete shock and mortified by what you've just witnessed, you can't articulate what's happening. The men then turn their attention toward you, and you've realized that you're next. As atrocious of a crime as this sounds, this is a grim reality that many marine life, more specifically sharks, face on a daily basis around the world. Each year, millions of sharks are hunted in our oceans by fishermen who are only seeking to acquire what they consider their prized possession, their fins. It's a practice known as shark finning ... • 36. The Loss Of The Shark Population Within the past four decades the severity of the loss of the shark population has become a more prominent issue as research has been conducted. The main contributor to the decline of the shark population is due to the exploitation of sharks through over fishing and finning. Shark finning is the process of catching sharks while fishing, then removing the fins from the body of the shark and throwing the carcass back to sea, thus causing the sharks to drown. The purpose of this research was to look further into the East Asian cultural aspects that affect the practice of shark finning as well as what could potentially be done to protect the shark species in the future. Through the research conducted I was able to come to the conclusion that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... My research leads me to the conclusion that East Asian cultural beliefs are one of the biggest contributors to the shark fin market, and thus stricter measures need to be taken to ensure the populations of sharks as a whole are protected. To begin research for this project, I started with One Search. This proved to be one of the better resources that I used. Besides One Search I also used USA.gov, Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstract, Bibliography of Asian Studies Online, and Web of Science. Each of these databases proved to be useful in their own ways. From One Search I moved towards the Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstract (ASFA), the articles that I found in this database were a good starting point to understanding the anatomical and physiological aspects of sharks. As my research progressed I found that the majority of the articles that I had originally found through this database were not relevant to my research question. I was able to focus in my research from "sharks" to "shark finning" and then ultimately "shark finning within East Asian culture", and as my research question became more focused I was able to find more specific articles that were relevant. Web of Science was also a useful tool to use as well. It was nice being able to take an article that had good information in it and see where else it had been cited. Through this database I was able to find a few more articles that were useful. It became clear through research that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 38. Local And Global Commodity Chains: Shark Fins Local & Global Commodity Chains: Shark Fins The production and consumption of any good can be traced by the demand that people have for that good, on both a local and global scale. However, many factors affect the demand; on the local scale factors such as the cultural significance the good holds with the people, and on the global scale the environmental impacts of the production of the good can cause repercussions that ultimately disturb the demand. One such good are shark fins. The ever obscure commodity chain of producing and consuming shark fins has been a controversial topic in the Asia community and in the global community for some time. The production of shark fins spans across the globe; Asian, European, and South American countries all participate in the shark trade. Shark fin consumption, however, is relatively concentrated to the countries of East Asia, most notably China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Taiwan.
