Sdla Case Control Study
EVIDENCE BASED Increasing physical demands and training requirements for athletes competing in overhead sports or activities have the potential
to create injuries to the glenoid labrum and can cause shoulder pain and dysfunction.1 Superior labral anterior posterior (SLAP) lesions can occur either
in isolation or in conjuncture with a broad spectrum of other shoulder injuries, such as rotator cuff tears, glenohumeral instability, and isolated biceps
tendon ruptures.1 The detection of SLAP lesions has developed with the improvements in diagnostic imaging, but physical examination tests remain
nonspecific.1 Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to review three different research studies pertaining to the diagnostic accuracy of SLAP lesion
injuries. In a case–control study performed by Oh et al.,2 the main objective was to evaluate the sensitivity, specificity, and predictive values of 10
different physical examination tests for the diagnosis of type II SLAP lesions. Sixty–eight individuals with an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The participants included 87 individuals (28 men, 49 women) with various shoulder dysfunctions who were assessed during a routine clinical
evaluation and consented for shoulder arthroscopy. Also, all individuals were required to have a magnetic resonance image (MRI), to have completed
the dedicated special tests of interest in the study, and to have a detailed diagnosis after arthroscopic surgery. Patients were examined using the active
compression (O'Brien's) test, biceps load II test, dynamic labral shear test (O'Driscoll's), Speed's test, and the labral tension test. The same physician

Rotator Cuff Injury Research Paper
Millions of people across the United States suffer from either Bursitis or a rotator cuff injury every year. Although sometimes the two can be
misconceived, they are very different in all actuality. Bursitis is the inflammation or irritation of the bursa. A bursa is a fluid
–filled sac used as a
bumper near the joints to reduce friction. There are many bursae located in your body, some of which being in the hip, shoulder, wrist, and elbow.
However, a rotator cuff injury only affects the shoulder area of the body. The "rotator cuff" is composed of the supraspinatus, infraspinatus,
subscapularis, and teres minor muscles. There is only one main way to be diagnosed with Bursitis and it happens when you overuse a joint in sports or
on the job. You can put the bursa under pressure for a long time, thus causing the bursa to become inflamed.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
On the other hand, scientists have found three main activities that can cause a rotator cuff tear. Repetitive stress is when you repeat a certain action
or movement constantly and cause the muscles to tear. Sports like baseball and tennis can cause this. Another way of disruption is by a lack of
blood supply in the rotator cuff. As people age blood supply to our tendons and muscles can deplete, causing an impairment in our body's natural
repair of tendons. The final way that can cause a tear in the rotator cuff is bone spurs. Bone spurs can develop on the underside of the acromion bone.
When we lift our arms, the spurs rub on the rotator cuff tendons. This condition is called shoulder impingement, and over time will weaken the tendon
and make it more likely to tear. The first sign of trouble with Bursitis is pain. Along with this pain will come swelling, redness, and tenderness of the
affected area. In some cases, it will cause stiffness in the

Scapular Muscle Rehabilitation
Introduction In regards to mobility, the glenohumeral (GH) joint is one of the best the human body has to offer. It allows for the range of motion
needed for the activities of daily living that we have all grown accustomed to. In order to execute these motions, however, the shoulder joint needs a
stable base of support. This is one of the primary roles of the scapula and its surrounding musculature. When the GH joint is injured, however, scapular
muscle–activation, and therefore stability and function, is theoretically altered. Many shoulder rehabilitation programs focus on restoring proper
coordination of these muscles, especially those involved with scapular upward–rotation. Until recently, however, there has not been much research
supporting the relationship between muscle–activation ratios and shoulder injuries, nor the ability to preferentially activate scapular muscles using
rehabilitation exercises. Furthermore, the purpose of this study was to determine if there are differences in muscle–activation ratios between healthy
individuals and those with GH injuries, as well as evaluate muscle–activation during particular rehabilitation exercises (Moeller, Huxel Bliven, &
Snyder Valier, 2014).

They defined one independent variable as group, referring to either healthy control or GH injury. The other independent variable was defined as
functional exercise, which consisted of bow and arrow (BA), external rotation with scapular squeeze (ERSS), lawnmower, and robbery. The dependent
variables were identified as normalized muscle–activation from the serratus anterior (SA), upper trapezius (UT), middle trapezius (MT), and lower
trapezius (LT). These values were used to calculate ratios of muscle–activation (Moeller, Huxel Bliven, & Snyder Valier,

Essay On Kidney Replacement
Background: Proximal end of the humerus is a common site for both primary and metastatic bone tumors. Limbe salvage with endoprosthetic
replacement is the most common means of reconstruction but it is proved to be just a spacer with inferior shoulder function. So it can be replaced by
cheaper spacers specially in poor societies.
Patients and methods: This study included 20 patients, fourteen were females. With mean age of 40.4 years (range 12 to 60 ). Diagnosed as 6

The most commonly used reconstructive techniques after proximal humeral resection include osteoarticular allografts , allograft– or
autograft–prosthesis composites.(7)
Risks vary dependent on the choice of reconstruction. Biological reconstruction can be complicated by fracture, infection, and subchondral collapse,
leading to implant revision or removal. Difficulties with endoprosthetic reconstruction involve consequences of surgical resection of deltoid and rotator
cuff. These include proximal subluxation, instability, and a reduction in functional range of motion .(2,3,8,9)
Aim of the work: The aim of this work was to evaluate the result of (endoprosthetic versus cement spacer replacements) reconstructions of the proximal
humerus after tumor resection.
Patients and methods: This work included 20 patients presented with proximal humeral lesions with a mean age of 40.4 years (range; 12 to 60

The Sheep Is A Suitable Model
The sheep is a suitable model because the rotator cuff tendons are similar in size to human which from a transitional standpoint allows for various
suturing techniques to improve repairs. USDA approved, female Black Suffolk sheep (n=23) (Ovis aries; age, 10 to 12 mo; weight, 55 to 105 kg)
were determined to be healthy by physical examination by a veterinarian at the University of Michigan's Unit for Laboratory Animal Medicine
(ULAM). All sheep were housed in groups within approved large animal facilities for the duration of the study and assigned to 1 of 2 experimental
groups (ETG–RC repair or suture–only (SO) repair). The left shoulder was designated as the experimental rotator cuff tear and repair with the

KNES 427– Therapeutic Athletic Exercise
September 30, 2016 Introduction
Russell Carrington is a 25 year old right handed relief pitcher for the MLB team the Baltimore Orioles. Carrington has been playing baseball since he
was seven years old and this was his third season in the Major Leagues. Carrington was at the mound and in the motion of throwing a fastball, when
he felt a "pop" in his overhand motion. He dropped to his knees and clinched his right shoulder in pain. Athletic trainers came onto the field an upon
examination Carrington stated his arm felt like it was "dead" and felt like it was "catching". Carrington was seen by the team physician. She performed
ROM exercises, strength, and stability tests on his shoulder and examined his neck and head to ensure pain wasn't coming from a pinched nerve. She
concluded that further testing and imaging was necessary. Carrington had an X–ray and MRI done on his shoulder and he was diagnosed with a type II
SLAP (Superior Labrum Anterior and Posterior) lesion. He didn't want surgery done because he would miss the remainder of the season and possibly
the next, so doctors prescribed non–steroid anti–inflammatory medication and five months physical therapy to strengthen the shoulder capsule. After
completion of physical therapy, the pain didn't improve and arthroscopy surgery was recommended.

Boxing: The Five Phases Of Boxing
Boxing, a fierce sport that requires both quick thinking and fast reflexes. The right hook is known for its knock downs and defeats of even the most
elite of players and was a popular spectator sport in Ancient Rome. Since then the world of boxing has only grown, bringing out elite athletes like
Muhammed Ali and Mike Tyson. There are five phases of the Right Hook punch, the starting position, the wind up phase, initial swing phase, contact
phase, and lastly the recoil phase.
The start position will consist of moving the arms up to block the face requiring flexion of the elbows at a little less than a 45o angle, the flexion of
the elbow takes place with the mediolateral axis along a sagittal plane (2). This will ensure the protection of the ... Show more content on

If the angle is more or less than 90o this makes the movement ineffective and is unable to provide maximum power in the punch (6). A beginner
boxer is more likely to extend their elbow and are open to blocks from the opponents, while a more experienced boxer is able to angle their elbow
and drive more force into the punch. There is also the case with exaggerated movement and because there is limited flexion in the elbow the boxer is
more prone to a dislocated shoulder. Another two stances that may affect a beginner is excessive wrist flexion with feet too wide apart and hands to
far from the face with excessive shoulder and wrist extension. Most professional boxers when they complete a right hook they aim to knockout their
opponent. If the hands of their opponent are far from their face it leaves them vulnerable to these punches (7). As shown, neither of these stances are
going to prove effective and are more likely to result in injury. Both some beginners and professionals are guilty of this action and that's ignoring pain
or 'playing through', it could strain muscles and further degenerate injured tissue. Therefore, it is best to rest then risk further injury

Reflection Paper
I spoke at length with Mr. Rife on 7/5/17. He reports that his pain level remains at a 7. He reports taking his narcotic pain medication twice a day. He
said he is going to physical therapy. They are working on Isometric exercises and also heat and ice. He has a home program to follow. He reports he
was able to attend his son's wedding out west. I explained to Mr. Rife that my co–worker Chris Callahan would be meeting him at his next appointment
on 7/10/17. The following is the update from Ms. Callahan:
Mr. Rife is hesitant and concerned about his pain issues he said he's had an increase in pain for the last two weeks in physical therapy, walking any
distance aggravates the shoulder sneezing especially. He reports his Pain is a 7. He is hesitant on taking medications. He said he has addiction in
family history. He may take a Tramadol for pain, but he rather just deal with it as addiction is always in the back of his mind. He wore his sling 40%
of the time he said if he lifts his arm to support it helps. I.e. it's on his side across his chest it helps relieve some of the discomfort. He overall feels
compared to last month the pain is not as bad. Dr Wines completed his examination and said he does not have a frozen shoulder which is good he is
able to place his left extremity behind his back to the belt level. He has positive pain and tenderness to the shoulder compared to last month the pain
is not as bad but it is a concern of Mr. Rife. The physician said

Microfracture Procedure
Background and purpose:
Repetitive overhead athletic activities and age can increase risk for shoulder pathologies to arise. The microfracture procedure has been used more
recently for chondral defects of the glenoid and humeral head. There is very limited research on the rehabilitation following the microfracture
procedure, and even less in conjunction with other pathological surgical repairs. The purpose of this case report is to provide details on the
rehabilitation of a recreational athlete who underwent a type II SLAP repair with a microfracture of the central humeral head and glenoid.
Case Description:
The patient was a 41–year–old male who failed conservative treatment of a SLAP tear and full thickness glenoid and humeral head articular ... Show

In 1990 the acronym "SLAP lesion" (Superior Labral Anterior and Posterior) was coined by Synder et al, ashoulder pathology previously made known
after arthroscopically identified by Andrews et al in 1985. 2,3 The prevalence of SLAP lesions in recreational athletic and athletic populations ranges
from 3.9 %– 11.8%. 4 Kim, et al noted out of 544 shoulders arthroscopically evaluated, 25% were diagnosed with a SLAP lesion, and 88%, about 120
subjects, presented with another pathology.6
A more recent surgical procedure, called a microfracture technique, has become more supported at the shoulder. 7 At the hip, McCarthy et al found
74% of patients with a labral pathology also had chondral lesions.18 The microfracture procedure is a technique that pierces subchondral bone to
initiate the body's natural response to injury. Through this, a pathway for cell migration to the chondral defect is formed where a clot will then
become a stable scar of fibrocartilage and hyaline.19,8 This cartilaginous mixture can be seen as a disadvantage due to less mechanically stable
fibrocartilage, making this scar mixture possibly more prone to future

Process Essay: The Makeup Of The Shoulder
The shoulder remains an oft injured part of the body, and injuries range from mild to severe. Separated shoulders often occur as a result of a fall, and
car accidents at high speeds may lead to the collarbone or shoulder blade being fractured. In fact, this part of the body continues to be one of the most
frequently injured, with most individuals injuring one or more parts of the shoulder during their lifetime.
The Makeup Of The Shoulder
The shoulder consists of three separate bones: the scapula or shoulder blade, the clavicle or collarbone and the humerus or arm bone. Most people only
associate the shoulder blade with the shoulder, yet all three parts work together to ensure proper functioning, and the shoulder also contains tissues to
ensure the joint works as intended. This includes muscles, tendons, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When they have not shifted, no surgery will be needed. If they have, however, pins or plates and screws will be used to move them back to the proper
position and, in severe cases, a shoulder replacement may be required.
Shoulder Blade Fracture Symptoms
When the shoulder blade sustains a fracture, pain and swelling are commonly reported. Another sign of a fracture in this area is severe bruising.
Individuals cannot assume the bruising means the shoulder is simply injured. It must be checked to determine if there is an actual break.
For the majority of shoulder blade or scapula fractures, the shoulder heals with nothing more than immobilization using a shoulder immobilizer or
sling, the application of ice and the dispensing of pain medications. Nevertheless, 10 to 20 percent of patients do require surgery, and this typically
happens when the shoulder joint is affected or the shoulder blade and collarbone are both broken. The fracture fragments are then fixed using screws
and plates.

Labrum Pathology: A Case Study
Evaluation
The clinical evaluation of labrum pathology can be difficult to diagnose due to each type of SLAP lesion having different mechanisms of injury, pain,
and area that is affected. Type 1 SLAP lesions can usually be associated with rotator cuff pathology with a partial thickness tear of the supraspinatus
ligament due to micro–tears. ^1,5 This is quite common in baseball players and other overhead athletes. Type II lesions can vary based on age; younger
patients have more instability than older patients who tend to have rotator cuff pathology. ^1,6 Type III and IV lesions are more commonly associated
with traumatic instability. ^1 As with all injuries, the evaluation should start with the history making sure to include the exact mechanism... Show more

^8,5 ASI occurs when the arm is in adduction with the shoulder internally rotated. The biceps complex pulley, also known as a capsuloligamentous
complex, adjoins the anterior glenoid causing injury when in extreme motions. With the PSI, the pulley is put into risk with abduction and external
rotation on the posterosuperior glenoid. ^8 PSI is also associated with partial–thickness tears on the deep side of the articular surface of the rotator cuff.
^5 This can be a common cause for a peel–back mechanism associated with a SLAP lesion. ^8 Peel–back mechanisms can be produced many different
ways, but are mostly seen with a SLAP lesion or internal impingement. These can occur when the shoulder is placed into abduction and extreme
external rotation with a torsional force added to the labro–bicipital complex that is at the base of the biceps on the posterior superior labrum. ^1,5 This
causes fatigue and failure of the humeral head that rotates medially over the upper rim of the glenoid fossa creating a shearing force. ^1,5 Increased
superior labral strain in overhead athletes occurs during the late–cocking phase of throwing when arm is externally rotated. ^1 Biceps tenodesis is
common after arthroscopic surgery of a SLAP lesion. This is when the reattachment of the labro–bicipital complex is rigid and disables at the glenoid.
Physiological medial rolling of the biceps tendon anchor during abduction and external rotation can cause the labro–bicipital complex to become rigid.
^5 This is due to a failure of a SLAP repair and traction to the labro–bicipital complex. Pain is felt in the shoulder due to the shoulder being innervated
by sensory sympathetic fibers which are irritated by the displacement of the glenoid.

Shoulder impingement syndrome is a progressively worsening condition in many individuals. The use of a chiropractic adjustment or myofascial dry
needling as forms of treatment are both yet to be differentiated as to which is more beneficial (Fitness Pain Free. 2016).
The aim of this study is to research the effect of a chiropractic adjustment on the shoulder and the cervical spine, and compare to dry needling of the
shoulder and cervical musculature.
The research study will include three separate groups that will receive chiropractic adjustments, dry needling or a combination of the two treatments.
The results will then be evaluated and an outcome will be based on these results as to which treatment is more effective.

Safety In The NFL : The Importance Of Sports Safety
The Importance of Sports Safety
Sports can be a very dangerous game depending on how you play the sport. You can be to aggressive in the NFL and seriously hurt someone despite
the gear you wear. You can be a MLB pitcher and mess up on a pitch and hurt a player by throwing a pitch at a player's head. You have to be very
careful how you play the sport you are playing. Sports are supposed to be competitive and fun, but you have to remember to be safe and care for the
other competitors you are competing against. Sports safety is a big deal, and is very important in all sports types. Like in the NFL, there are rules to
help players stay safe. One of the most common and important problems you hear about is when a player gets a concussion. A concussion is a
temporary unconsciousness caused by a blow to the head. When a NFL player takes a hit to the head, for example getting tackled, that player who
took the blow to the head immediately gets taken off the field and is given a thorough evaluation by a doctor that all NFL teams have present with
them at games. That player could be having a fantastic game, but if the doctor has come to the conclusion that the player may have a concussion, that
player will not be able to play the remainder of the game for the players safety. A concussion can become a danger to the brain of the player if the
player went out and took another hit to the head. These rules from the NFL are set for a reason so that the player does not get a serious injury.
Another injury that is watched carefully is caused by the face mask. The face mask penalty is when a player grabs hold of the face mask, and
brings the player down by the face mask. That penalty is a 15 yard. When a player does that, it can cause serious harm to the player. You can hurt
the player's neck because the face mask is connected to the helmet. If you were to move the face mask a certain way, you can harm the player's neck,
or possibly break a player's neck, which could be life threatening. Coaches and staff train NFL players to never make a tackle using the face mask,
because you can seriously harm a player. That is a really big deal in the NFL, or even college and high school football. Those rules are heavily enforced

Rebel Without a Clue in John Updike's A&P Essay
Rebel Without a Clue in Updike's A & P
Adults always stress that it is important to make a good first impression. That is what Sammy was trying to accomplish in John Updike's "A & P."
Although some people believe that Sammy is a hero for standing up for his beliefs when he quit, there is conclusive evidence that he quit in an attempt
to impress a girl he was obviously attracted to, Queenie.
We know he is attracted to Queenie because he goes to great lengths to tell us what shelooks like, what her mannerisms are, and the way that the other
girls follow her. For example, he says, "She was the Queen. She kind of led them, the other two peeking around and making their shoulders round"

I mean, it was more than pretty" (1026). Someone who is attracted to someone else would usually notice something as striking as that. He continued
with, "She held her head so high her neck, coming out of those white shoulders, looked kind of stretched, but I didn't mind. The longer her neck was,
the more of her there was" (1026). All of the above examples demonstrate how sexually interested Sammy is in Queenie, but this one is the clincher:
"Still with that prim look she lifts a folded dollar bill out of the hollow at the center of her nubbled pink top. The jar went heavy in my hand" (1028).
Sammy uses Lengel's reprimand to bring attention to himself. He was acting as a boy trying to defend his girlfriend. Sammy says, "The girls, and
who'd blame them, are in a hurry to get out, so I say 'I quit' to Lengel quick enough for them to hear, hoping they'll stop and watch me, their
unsuspected hero." This is the most obvious attempt that Sammy makes to impress the girls. However, it doesn't work. The girls leave before
Sammy can even get outside. Sammy's family says that that is the sad part of the story. Sammy also says, "and my stomach kind of fell as I felt how
hard the world was going to be to me hereafter" (1030). Now, is this the sort of thing that someone would say after standing up for something they
believe in? I should say not! Most people

Different Types of Tears During Shoulder Dislocation Essay
With all of the tears, the first type of tear is one where the labrum is torn all of the way off of the bone. This type of tear usually correlates with an
injury to the shoulder where the shoulder has subluxated or dislocated. Sometimes, this tear occurs and the individual does not realize that the shoulder
has slid out of the socket. This can make it much worse and cause other types of injuries to the ligaments around the shoulder.
The second type of labrum tear is tearing within the actual labrum. The sides of the labrum after a while may get frayed, meaning a slight tear where
the labrum slowly starts to unravel like yarn, so that the edge is no longer even and smooth. This type of tearing is proven to be pretty common and
rarely ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
All of the different tears have the same symptoms for the most part, as I explained before. There are many different sports that one can find this
injury in, especially when it is located in the shoulder. Sports such as baseball, softball, tennis, football, frisbee, basketball and even hockey are
just some of the many sports that doctors have found this injury to be common in. This past year, a boy on my brothers' hockey team tore his
shoulder labrum at the beginning of the hockey season. He was not able to practice, nor play in games during this time. Surgery for his injury was
performed in November, just as the hockey season was kicking off. His recovery is expected to take about 6 months because of the severity of the
injury. He was originally in a sling for the first month. Doctors' protocol had him icing everyday for at least two hours for the first month after
surgery as well. Once swelling began to go down, he began physical therapy. Currently, he's not allowed to lift more than 20 pounds. Physical therapy
is going really well and he is already supposed to shorten his expected recovery time. He should be back in for this upcoming season.
There are a very small amount of easy treatments possible for this injury. Depending on the type of labral tear and intensity of symptoms, one may need
surgery. Most tears, both shoulder andhip, do not depend upon surgery, but patients that obtain

A Badminton Overhead Clear Shot
In this essay I will discuss, de–construct and analyze the techniques used by my partner, Luke Wynne when performing the badminton overhead clear
shot using anatomical and biomechanical analysis. Throughout the essay I will give critical feedback and feed forward on four different phases, the
preparation phase, execution phase, contact phase and the follow through phase. I will discuss the functional anatomy of how my partner can better
his whole performance to become closer to the optimum performance that elite athletes play at, also known as the autonomous stage of learning. I will

of the shot the player raises his arms above his head using the posterior deltoid. This movement involves the flexion of the elbow using the biceps. The
pectoral major and the biceps are the agonists in this movement with the antagonists being the triceps, latissimiss dorsi and the trapezius. This
movement involves the use of the third class lever, with the load being the racquet, and effort being the triceps and the fulcrum being the elbow, which
is a hinge joint. Also at this stage, the non–racquet arm is fully extended pointing at the shuttle using the trapezius and the interior deltoid to extend the

Anatomy And Physiology Of Rotator Cuff Tendonitis
Rotator Cuff Tendonitis
Abby Johnson
Mr. Mejewski
Anatomy and Physiology
Hour 4
What does a gardener, an athlete and a carpenter all have in common? Easy, they all have a higher risk of acquiring tendinitis in their shoulders, more
specifically rotator cuff tendonitis. Shoulders are a very important component to the body, as they allow you to move your arms in any direction you
choose. Seeing that rotator cuff tendinitis is very frequently diagnosed, I was interested to learn more about it and what makes it so common. Ashoulder
is one of the most complex joints of the body. The anatomy of the shoulder starts where the humerus fits into the scapula almost as if it were
mimicking a ball and socket. The scapula has a little tip of itself overlooking the tendons of the shoulder called the acromion and a bit of itself
fanning out, a part called the coracoid. Also connected to the scapula is the clavicle or collarbone. Another very important component to the shoulder
is the rotator cuff, this is the most vital part to rotator cuff tendonitis. It is composed of four muscles and of various tendons that surround the shoulder
socket that allow it to connect the upper arm and the shoulder blade together. Protecting the rotator cuff is is a small sac of fluid called a bursa. The
humerus fits relatively loosely into the shoulder joint. This gives the shoulder a wide range of motion, but also makes it vulnerable to injury. In
macroscopic detail, the shoulder looks

how you play the sport you are playing. Sports are supposed to be competive and fun, but you have to remember to be safe and care for the other
competiors you are competing against. Sports safety is a big deal, and is very important in all sports types. Like in the NFL, there are rules to help
players stay safe. One of the most common and important problems you hear about is when a player gets a concussion. A concussion is a temporary
unconsciousness caused by a blow to the head. When a NFL player takes a hit to the head, for example getting tackled, that player who took the blow
to the head immediately gets taken off the field and is given a thorough evaluation by a doctor that all NFL teams have present with them at games.
That player could be having a fantastic game, but if the doctor has come to the conclusion that the player may have a concussion, that player will not
be able to play the remainder of the game for the players safety. A concussion can become a danger to the brain of the player if the player went out
and took another hit to the head. These rules from the NFL are set for a reason so that the player does not get a serious injury.

Upper Body Injury Essay
In the discussion at hand few where asked to to select an upper body injury in any sport and elaborate on the subject matter. The first thing that we
need to do is define the appendicular skeleton. "The axial skeleton includes all the bones (that form bony structures) along the body's long axis. The
bones of the appendicular skeleton make up the rest of the skeleton and are so called because they are appendages of the axial skeleton. The
appendicular skeleton includes the bones of the shoulder girdle, the upper limbs, the pelvic girdle, and the lower limbs." (Publishing). The injury that I
was enlightening to highlight within the appendicular skeleton is tennis elbow or in medical terms (lateral epicondylitis. The sport that this is most
prevalent in is weight lifting. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Anatomy of the elbow is made up of" elbow joint is a joint made up of three bones: your upper arm bone (humerus) and the two bones in your
forearm (radius and ulna). There are bony bumps at the bottom of the humerus called epicondyles. The bony bump on the outside (lateral side) of the
elbow is called the lateral epicondyle." (). The cornucopia of arrangements in the interior appendicular skeleton in the elbow area is always a
hazardous area for weightlifters therefore; it should be catered towards and looked at in detail.
Many times, people in the fitness world are all about production and results with little acknowledgement to the cause of injuries. lateral epicondylitis is

Rotator Cuff Research Paper
Rotator cuff tendons are prone to degeneration leading to swelling with sub–luxation due to continuous active and passive forces. Rotator cuff
pathology includes tendinopathy, tendinosis and bursitis, as well as rotator cuff tears. Most common indication for rotator cuff tears include increasing
age and traumatic shoulder injury. Clinical symptoms for rotator cuff injuries include shoulder pain, weakness and loss of range of motion. However,
these symptoms are common in various diseases; differential diagnosis includes labral tears, glenohumeral ligament tears or sprains, coracoacromial
and arcomioclavicular ligament tears and sprains, osteoarthritis, adhesive capsulitis, proximal peripheral neuropathies and cervical radiculopathy. Hence,

Thus helps in treatment planning and prognosis. Multiple factors are to be considered during treatment planning. It is important to identify the disorder
and its clinical implications, to ensure the most appropriate treatment. Nevertheless, the choice of imaging test depends on personal experience,
preference, local availability and the cost of imaging. The American College of Radiology has developed informative criteria that rate the relative
usefulness of various imaging modalities for the evaluation of shoulder pain in different clinical scenarios. However, the diagnostic algorithm will
ultimately be influenced by the therapeutic approach. The use of various imaging techniques to determine rotator cuff injuries is very controversial.
Thus a technique used should not only be informative but cost effective as well. Arthrography is invasive with much health risk. US is a non–invasive,
relatively inexpensive, no risk of exposure to radiation and therefore, can be used as initial line of investigation. MRI is sensitive and specific, to

Ineffective Strengthening Programs: As I wrote in the intro, ineffective strengthening programs are too common in the world of swimming. Moreover,
poor exercise execution is as common as kickboards on deck. When performing shoulder strengthening you should feel it in the shoulders, not the low
back, or any other area! Also, we know eccentric muscular contractions create more force, so why are swimmers rushing through this phase during
rotator cuff movements? Ensure slowness during any rotator cuff exercise for reducing swimming shoulder pain.
4. Neglecting the Role of the Rotator Cuff Muscle: One primary role of the rotator cuff is stabilization of the humuerus (upper shoulder bone) into the
glenoid (the shoulder blade). If these muscles are fatigued or not strong in this role, excessive motion occurs at the joint, increasing the stress at the
joint. Make sure to strengthen your rotator cuff with stabilization exercises.
5. Roator Cuff Damage Will Occur in Swimming: This may sound confusing, but rotator cuff damage will occur if you are an elite swimmer. Millions
and millions of strokes increase shoulder stress and create damage at these muscles. If you are a competitive swimmer, this happens. To my next

Disadvantages Of Rotator Cuff Surgery
2.0Literature Review
In the literature review, the author will review the anatomy and mechanical characteristics of the shoulder joint. The author will also analyse the
requirements for the mechanical testing and demonstration of rotator cuff surgery efficiency. In order to successfully complete this task, it will require
investigation and research of at least two methods used in rotator cuff surgery. The author will therefore examine the operation of at least two currently
used methods of rotator cuff surgery and analyse the advantages, disadvantages, statistics, success rates, cost and efficiency of each procedure and
compare the methods that were examined. Due to the nature of this project, peer–reviewed publications, academic journals, articles and books as well
as e–books will be referenced wherever possible, but information that is found on the internet will not be used unless it is mentioned in any of the
previously stated sources of information
Section 1 – Anatomy
This section of the literature review will deal with the anatomy of the shoulder. "Anatomy" can roughly be defined as a branch of science that is

Tai Chi For Fall Prevention For Older Adults Using A Twice...
Background: One of the biggest challenges that faces the older adult population currently is the increased incidence of falls and postural instability.1–2
Several randomized controlled trials have been conducted to investigate the effectiveness of Tai Chi for Fall Prevention for older adults using a twice
a week program model. 3The purpose of this report is to identify if a once–a–week Tai Chi program makes a significant difference in improving the
balance of a 78–year–old community–dwelling elderly.
Case Description: The subject of this study is a 78–year–old female with post open–reduction–internal fixation on right hip in June 2014. She typifies
an excellent candidate for this study because of a previous right hip fracture due to fall, multiple joint pains due to the diagnosis of osteoarthritis,
thoracolumbar dextro–scoliosis, lumbar spinal stenosis, has sleep apnea, hearing and vision deficits. Since May 2016, patient regularly participated in a
once a week 45–minute Tai Chi program offered at the local YMCA.
Outcomes: Despite the short period of an investigation conducted by this study, improved scores on the balance test and measures (TUG, Tinetti, FFR,
6–minute–walk test) indicated that the patient's risk for falls is reduced. She demonstrates good balance, good overall strength and flexibility enabling
her to perform all activities of daily living (ADL) and intermediate ADL with minimal effort and decreased her fear of falling.

Slap Tear
SLAP Lesion Tear
A SLAP lesion tear is an injury to the shoulder. This can cause painful symptoms and difficulty with overhead activities whether they be athletic or
those of daily living. In 1985, Andrews et al were the first to describe the superior labrum tear. In their experience, they identified tears of the labrum
from throwing athletes located anterosuperor near the origin of the bicep tendon. The cause of the lesion to tear was the bicep tendon being pulled
off the labrum from the force generated during the throwing motion. As time went on, the labral tears got categorized into four different types of
classifications called SLAP lesions by Snyder in 1990. A SLAP lesion, as described by Snyder involves tears of the superior... Show more content on

SLAP lesion can develop due to the repetitive forces of the throwing motion. Athletes that are involved in overhead activities tend to develop a struggle
in glenohumeral internal rotation. Both internal impingement and peel back mechanisms can cause that to happen.
Walch et al first described the internal impingement as an intraarticular impingement of the rotator cuff in the abducted and externally rotated shoulder.
With 90 degrees of both abduction and external rotation, the articular surface of the posterior superior rotator cuff becomes pinched between the labrum
and the greater tuberosity.5 The authors separated the labral lesions from SLAP lesions which extended anteriorly to the biceps anchor at the
supraglenoid tubercle, concluding that internal impingement may be responsible for a subset of patients with isolated posterior SLAP tears.5
Burkhart et. al presented the peel back (posterior superior) mechanism that causes SLAP lesions. The peel back has its origin in a biceps vector change
in the position of abduction and external rotation resulting in torsional forces to the labra–bicipital complex.6 Once the posterior superior labrum gets
fatigued, it will start to rotate medially over the upper rim of the glenoid. This could happen in a late cocking position of

I attended a Board ordered deposition of your consultant, Dr. Dominic Belmonte, in the above matter on 08/09/2017. The claimant was represented by
attorney Kayla Seger and our hearing reporter was Linda Engel.
As you know, this case is established for injuries to the left shoulder, left pectoral muscle and neck. The average weekly wage has been set at
$2,034.82. At this time we are litigating the issues of degree of disability, maximum medical improvement and permanency.
This deposition was scheduled for the testimony of your consultant, Dr. Belmonte. Dr. Belmonte examined the claimant on two occasions, the first was
on 12/29/16 and the second on 04/12/17. In his 04/12/17report, he finds that the claimant is at maximum medical ... Show more content on

He testified he felt the claimant was at maximum medical improvement and had a rating of 3–B under the Board Permanency Guidelines. I asked him
to explain how he reached his opinion and he indicated that since this case involved both the neck and the left shoulder it was not amendable to a
schedule loss of use. He then turned to Table 11.2 for soft tissue spine injuries. He stated the claimant had complaints with supporting imaging studies
and therefore, under the Table 11.1 the appropriate rating would be 3–B.
I note that Ms. Seger objected to the testimony on the issue of permanency, maintaining this issue was not before the Board. We in fact had raised the
issue at the last hearing when we submitted Dr. Belmonte's report. I therefore had him testify to his opinion as to maximum medical improvement and
as to permanency. Ms. Seger asked no questions on cross–examination on these issues.
Cross–examination was extensive but the doctor did not change his opinion in any way. He reiterated his restrictions, which he felt were fifteen (15) to
twenty (20) pounds below chest level and lifting, pushing or pulling above the chest level with the left arm.
I was pleased with the doctors testimony. I feel he testified strongly and consistently with his written reports and his testimony was not altered or
impeached in any meaningful way on cross–examination. We will obviously consult the minutes of the doctors testimony as the testimony was more

Epidemiology : A Painful And Debilitating Condition
Epidemiology
AC, is a painful and debilitating condition affecting 2% – 10% of the population (Neviaser and Hannafin, 2010: Cadogan and Mohammed, 2016).
Statistical data indicates a higher prevalence in women (59% – 70%), a mean onset age of 50 – 60 years (Cadogan and Mohammed, 2016). The
average condition duration presents for 30.1 months but ranges from 1 – 3.5 years (Hand et al, 2008) placing a considerable burden upon individuals
and health care services. The non–dominant arm is slightly more affected then the dominant arm (Hand, Clipsham, Rees and Carr, 2008: Levine,
Kashyap, Bak, Ahmad, Blaine, and Bigliani, 2007) and the risk of recurrence on the contralateral side within 5 years of the first occurrence is
6%–17%, recurrence in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, Hakin, Cherkas, Spector and MacGregor (2003) research indicated there is no known genetic predisposition. Secondary Conditions
As a direct result of acquiring AC, secondary conditions can develop. Chronic pain (often severe) affects sleep patterns, avoidance of activities and
movement due to pain (fear avoidance) resulting in the withdrawal from normal daily activities and social settings (Ding, Tang, Xue, Yang, Li and He,
2014). As the condition can last up to 3 years the development of mental health conditions, anxiety and/or depression is a significant risk. A clinical
study investigating the correlation between AC/FS report that 28.2% and 24.2% of the AC participants had a high risk of depression and anxiety.
Patients with a clinical diagnosis of anxiety or depression reported an increase in shoulder pain, higher restriction of ROM and prevalence of sleep
disturbances (Ding, Tang, Xue, Yang, Li and He, 2014). If the dominate hand is affected retraining is required to function on the non
–dominate hand.
Reduced or no shoulder function and strength can result in a disability that is disruptive and impacts on every aspect of daily living. This in turn can
negatively impact on, finances (inability to work), friends and family (Jones, Hanchard, Hamilton and, Rangan, 2013).

In the hip, the "ball' of the femur fits into the "socket" of the pelvis. These joints allow the motion in the body. Also, the shoulder joint and the joint are

Rotator cuff surgery affects the function of the shoulder. It is very painful injury and there is loss in strength. If the rotator cuff tendon becomes
inflamed or is partially torn, it can be painful and will most limit shoulder movement. This injury occurs from a sudden impact, like falling on your arm

Pros And Cons Of Rotator Cuff Surgery
Rotator Cuff Surgery
Your rotator cuff consists of four muscles in your shoulder that allows you to move your arm away from your body. These muscles have tendons,
which connect them to the head of your upper arm bone or humerus. When a tear occurs in these muscles, you will experience extreme pain on motion.
A rotator cuff tear is also extremely painful at night. If left untreated, it may result in arm weakness.
Rotator cuff surgery may be required to repair re–attach torn tendons to the shoulder. This may be followed by rotator cuff exercises after surgery to
promote further healing and return of function.
Part 1: When Is Rotator Cuff Surgery Necessary?
A partial rotator cuff tear may not need surgery. Conservative treatment consists of rest and exercise, which help to heal your shoulder. This is... Show

Surgery may also be recommended for a tendon that is torn due to recent injury or when the tear is not a result of long–standing rotator cuff problems.
Part 2: How to Prepare for the Rotator Cuff Surgery
To prepare for rotator cuff surgery, inform your doctor about the current treatments you are taking. Two weeks before the surgery, you may have to
stop taking some medicines that can interfere with blood clotting such as aspirin, naproxen or ibuprofen. You will also have to see a doctor to
evaluate your medical condition if you have any health problems such as diabetes or heart disease. Other factors that may affect your surgery are
your smoking habits and alcohol intake, which you must avoid before surgery. Tell your doctor if you have any acute illness such as flu or fever
before surgery.
On the day of surgery, avoid eating or drinking anything six to 12 hours before the operation. Just take a small sip of water to ingest any medication
you are asked to take. Go to the hospital early so you will arrive on time for your surgery. Part 3: How Is Rotator Cuff Surgery

compresses the rotator cuff tendons in the supraspinatus outlet when the arm is elevated (McKinnis, 2014, p. 544). On the other hand, internal
impingement is the compression of the posterior capsule and rotator cuff between the humeral head and glenoid when the arm is elevated and rotated
(McKinnis, 2014, p. 544). The patient's history and physical exam are diagnostic for impingement syndrome. To further define the corresponding soft

Bursitis Research Paper
The disorder/disease I decided to write about is called Bursitis. By definition, Bursitis are caused when bursae, a fluid–filled sac at the joints, gets
inflamed. A person with Bursitis will have trouble with movement or pressure because the fluid–filled sacs help pressure and lubricate points between
our tendons, bones, and muscles located near our joints; allowing movement in joints without much friction. When a person has Bursitis, their
fluid–filled sac gets inflamed so movement and pressure will cause pain.
In our human body, the shoulder, elbow, ankle, knee, buttocks, hips, and thigh are the most common parts of our body that are likely to experience
Bursitis. Why? Because those are a few places where joints can be found. Bursitis is

CONCLUSION:
Regarding Acupuncture 2x4 to Right shoulder; CA MTUS does not consistently and overwhelmingly support the use of acupuncture in the management
of shoulder injuries. However, ODG states that among those shoulder indications found to have positive outcomes from acupuncture were rotator cuff
tendonitis, frozen shoulder, subacromial impingement syndrome, and rehab following arthroscopic acromioplasty. Additionally, ODG supports an
initial trial of 3 to 6 visits. The patient is s/p right shoulder arthroscopy with acromioplasty and rotator cuff repair on 08/13/15. Considering the

Shoulder Injury Research Paper
One of the most common injuries among athletes is found to be in the shoulder region, which entails the shoulder joint and the shoulder girdle. The
shoulder joint, is commonly referred to as the glenohumeral joint (ball and socket joint consisting of the ball/end of the humerus bone that sits in the
socket of the shoulder). The overall shoulder region also entails the shoulder girdle (the scapula/shoulder blade), and clavicle (collar bone). The
shoulder joint is predominantly vulnerable to injury because the large range of movement that it is capable of and the relatively small joint surfaces. In
turn, this means that the joint itself is much less stable and therefore requires a number of sturdy muscles, ligaments, and tendons and to maintain the
stability. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sadly, this exact positioning is what sets us up for shoulder impingement, and or a rotator cuff/labrum tear, down the road. Sadly, most people do not
like to put a pause on their busy daily lives, and in turn many people have a tendency to ignore the pain and "play through" shoulder injuries. In turn,
this only aggravates the condition and possibly causes more problems in the long run. People also may underestimate the extent of the injury because
they do not want to appear "weak," and interpret it as steady pain, or weakness in the arm, and cause limitation of joint motion can become almost
second nature to

Example Of Personal Narrative Essay For College
My favorite games were always the ones that came down to the last possession with only 5 seconds left. When the ticking of the clock became my
own heartbeat, and I could hear each individual squeak of sneakers on the court, I waited for the ball to come sailing through the air as the
accompanying adrenaline surged through my veins. This high seemed to go on forever, yet in reality it was only a mere second. Now with this
jolt of energy I was ready. I received the ball, and, with a quick pump fake and cross over dribble I would be around the opponents' point guard. I
would come to a jump stop and shoot! Time stopped as the buzzer went off and I waited to see if the ball would drop into the basket, it made its usual
arching course to the basket, flipping over itself again and again. But this time I was on the ground writhing in pain. It was a moment.
I thought it was life changing, but actually, it just ended my athletic career. Aftershoulder surgery, many hours of physical therapy, and countless
comeback attempts, I was waiting for my next moment to set me on a new path. It led me into the kitchen. Instead of using competition to increase my
heart rate, I decided that cooking and baking provided me with a similar excitement. I dreamed of being in a professional kitchen, where the knives
danced as they gracefully bounced up and down on the cutting board combining with the hum of the mixers, where the temperature kept rising
throughout the dinner service, as the aromas

Sdla Case Control Study

  • 1. Sdla Case Control Study EVIDENCE BASED Increasing physical demands and training requirements for athletes competing in overhead sports or activities have the potential to create injuries to the glenoid labrum and can cause shoulder pain and dysfunction.1 Superior labral anterior posterior (SLAP) lesions can occur either in isolation or in conjuncture with a broad spectrum of other shoulder injuries, such as rotator cuff tears, glenohumeral instability, and isolated biceps tendon ruptures.1 The detection of SLAP lesions has developed with the improvements in diagnostic imaging, but physical examination tests remain nonspecific.1 Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to review three different research studies pertaining to the diagnostic accuracy of SLAP lesion injuries. In a case–control study performed by Oh et al.,2 the main objective was to evaluate the sensitivity, specificity, and predictive values of 10 different physical examination tests for the diagnosis of type II SLAP lesions. Sixty–eight individuals with an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The participants included 87 individuals (28 men, 49 women) with various shoulder dysfunctions who were assessed during a routine clinical evaluation and consented for shoulder arthroscopy. Also, all individuals were required to have a magnetic resonance image (MRI), to have completed the dedicated special tests of interest in the study, and to have a detailed diagnosis after arthroscopic surgery. Patients were examined using the active compression (O'Brien's) test, biceps load II test, dynamic labral shear test (O'Driscoll's), Speed's test, and the labral tension test. • 2. Rotator Cuff Injury Research Paper Millions of people across the United States suffer from either Bursitis or a rotator cuff injury every year. Although sometimes the two can be misconceived, they are very different in all actuality. Bursitis is the inflammation or irritation of the bursa. A bursa is a fluid –filled sac used as a bumper near the joints to reduce friction. There are many bursae located in your body, some of which being in the hip, shoulder, wrist, and elbow. However, a rotator cuff injury only affects the shoulder area of the body. The "rotator cuff" is composed of the supraspinatus, infraspinatus, subscapularis, and teres minor muscles. There is only one main way to be diagnosed with Bursitis and it happens when you overuse a joint in sports or on the job. You can put the bursa under pressure for a long time, thus causing the bursa to become inflamed.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... On the other hand, scientists have found three main activities that can cause a rotator cuff tear. Repetitive stress is when you repeat a certain action or movement constantly and cause the muscles to tear. Sports like baseball and tennis can cause this. Another way of disruption is by a lack of blood supply in the rotator cuff. As people age blood supply to our tendons and muscles can deplete, causing an impairment in our body's natural repair of tendons. The final way that can cause a tear in the rotator cuff is bone spurs. Bone spurs can develop on the underside of the acromion bone. When we lift our arms, the spurs rub on the rotator cuff tendons. This condition is called shoulder impingement, and over time will weaken the tendon and make it more likely to tear. The first sign of trouble with Bursitis is pain. Along with this pain will come swelling, redness, and tenderness of the affected area. In some cases, it will cause stiffness in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Scapular Muscle Rehabilitation Introduction In regards to mobility, the glenohumeral (GH) joint is one of the best the human body has to offer. It allows for the range of motion needed for the activities of daily living that we have all grown accustomed to. In order to execute these motions, however, the shoulder joint needs a stable base of support. This is one of the primary roles of the scapula and its surrounding musculature. When the GH joint is injured, however, scapular muscle–activation, and therefore stability and function, is theoretically altered. Many shoulder rehabilitation programs focus on restoring proper coordination of these muscles, especially those involved with scapular upward–rotation. Until recently, however, there has not been much research supporting the relationship between muscle–activation ratios and shoulder injuries, nor the ability to preferentially activate scapular muscles using rehabilitation exercises. Furthermore, the purpose of this study was to determine if there are differences in muscle–activation ratios between healthy individuals and those with GH injuries, as well as evaluate muscle–activation during particular rehabilitation exercises (Moeller, Huxel Bliven, & Snyder Valier, 2014). Methods ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They defined one independent variable as group, referring to either healthy control or GH injury. The other independent variable was defined as functional exercise, which consisted of bow and arrow (BA), external rotation with scapular squeeze (ERSS), lawnmower, and robbery. The dependent variables were identified as normalized muscle–activation from the serratus anterior (SA), upper trapezius (UT), middle trapezius (MT), and lower trapezius (LT). These values were used to calculate ratios of muscle–activation (Moeller, Huxel Bliven, & Snyder Valier, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Essay On Kidney Replacement Background: Proximal end of the humerus is a common site for both primary and metastatic bone tumors. Limbe salvage with endoprosthetic replacement is the most common means of reconstruction but it is proved to be just a spacer with inferior shoulder function. So it can be replaced by cheaper spacers specially in poor societies. Patients and methods: This study included 20 patients, fourteen were females. With mean age of 40.4 years (range 12 to 60 ). Diagnosed as 6 osteosarcomas , two , chondrosarcomas, two myeloma, two lymphoma, four metastatic carcinoma from the breast , two giant cell tumor and two recurrent chondroplastoma. Limb salvage was successfully done to all of them with Tikhof–linberg type I intwelve cases and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The most commonly used reconstructive techniques after proximal humeral resection include osteoarticular allografts , allograft– or autograft–prosthesis composites.(7) Risks vary dependent on the choice of reconstruction. Biological reconstruction can be complicated by fracture, infection, and subchondral collapse, leading to implant revision or removal. Difficulties with endoprosthetic reconstruction involve consequences of surgical resection of deltoid and rotator cuff. These include proximal subluxation, instability, and a reduction in functional range of motion .(2,3,8,9) Aim of the work: The aim of this work was to evaluate the result of (endoprosthetic versus cement spacer replacements) reconstructions of the proximal humerus after tumor resection. Patients and methods: This work included 20 patients presented with proximal humeral lesions with a mean age of 40.4 years (range; 12 to 60 years).fourteen (70%) females and six (30%) males. The Sheep Is A Suitable Model The sheep is a suitable model because the rotator cuff tendons are similar in size to human which from a transitional standpoint allows for various suturing techniques to improve repairs. USDA approved, female Black Suffolk sheep (n=23) (Ovis aries; age, 10 to 12 mo; weight, 55 to 105 kg) were determined to be healthy by physical examination by a veterinarian at the University of Michigan's Unit for Laboratory Animal Medicine (ULAM). All sheep were housed in groups within approved large animal facilities for the duration of the study and assigned to 1 of 2 experimental groups (ETG–RC repair or suture–only (SO) repair). • 6. Sample Resume : ' Type II Slap Lesions ' Type II SLAP LESIONS Alia Scriven Coppin State University KNES 427– Therapeutic Athletic Exercise September 30, 2016 Introduction Russell Carrington is a 25 year old right handed relief pitcher for the MLB team the Baltimore Orioles. Carrington has been playing baseball since he was seven years old and this was his third season in the Major Leagues. Carrington was at the mound and in the motion of throwing a fastball, when he felt a "pop" in his overhand motion. He dropped to his knees and clinched his right shoulder in pain. Athletic trainers came onto the field an upon examination Carrington stated his arm felt like it was "dead" and felt like it was "catching". Carrington was seen by the team physician. She performed ROM exercises, strength, and stability tests on his shoulder and examined his neck and head to ensure pain wasn't coming from a pinched nerve. She concluded that further testing and imaging was necessary. Carrington had an X–ray and MRI done on his shoulder and he was diagnosed with a type II SLAP (Superior Labrum Anterior and Posterior) lesion. He didn't want surgery done because he would miss the remainder of the season and possibly the next, so doctors prescribed non–steroid anti–inflammatory medication and five months physical therapy to strengthen the shoulder capsule. After completion of physical therapy, the pain didn't improve and arthroscopy surgery was recommended. Anatomy Superior labral anterior posterior (SLAP) tears are a normal cause of ... • 7. Boxing: The Five Phases Of Boxing Boxing, a fierce sport that requires both quick thinking and fast reflexes. The right hook is known for its knock downs and defeats of even the most elite of players and was a popular spectator sport in Ancient Rome. Since then the world of boxing has only grown, bringing out elite athletes like Muhammed Ali and Mike Tyson. There are five phases of the Right Hook punch, the starting position, the wind up phase, initial swing phase, contact phase, and lastly the recoil phase. The start position will consist of moving the arms up to block the face requiring flexion of the elbows at a little less than a 45o angle, the flexion of the elbow takes place with the mediolateral axis along a sagittal plane (2). This will ensure the protection of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If the angle is more or less than 90o this makes the movement ineffective and is unable to provide maximum power in the punch (6). A beginner boxer is more likely to extend their elbow and are open to blocks from the opponents, while a more experienced boxer is able to angle their elbow and drive more force into the punch. There is also the case with exaggerated movement and because there is limited flexion in the elbow the boxer is more prone to a dislocated shoulder. Another two stances that may affect a beginner is excessive wrist flexion with feet too wide apart and hands to far from the face with excessive shoulder and wrist extension. Most professional boxers when they complete a right hook they aim to knockout their opponent. If the hands of their opponent are far from their face it leaves them vulnerable to these punches (7). As shown, neither of these stances are going to prove effective and are more likely to result in injury. Both some beginners and professionals are guilty of this action and that's ignoring pain or 'playing through', it could strain muscles and further degenerate injured tissue. Through this, a pathway for cell migration to the chondral defect is formed where a clot will then become a stable scar of fibrocartilage and hyaline.19,8 This cartilaginous mixture can be seen as a disadvantage due to less mechanically stable fibrocartilage, making this scar mixture possibly more prone to future ... • 10. Process Essay: The Makeup Of The Shoulder The shoulder remains an oft injured part of the body, and injuries range from mild to severe. Separated shoulders often occur as a result of a fall, and car accidents at high speeds may lead to the collarbone or shoulder blade being fractured. In fact, this part of the body continues to be one of the most frequently injured, with most individuals injuring one or more parts of the shoulder during their lifetime. The Makeup Of The Shoulder The shoulder consists of three separate bones: the scapula or shoulder blade, the clavicle or collarbone and the humerus or arm bone. Most people only associate the shoulder blade with the shoulder, yet all three parts work together to ensure proper functioning, and the shoulder also contains tissues to ensure the joint works as intended. Individuals cannot assume the bruising means the shoulder is simply injured. It must be checked to determine if there is an actual break. For the majority of shoulder blade or scapula fractures, the shoulder heals with nothing more than immobilization using a shoulder immobilizer or sling, the application of ice and the dispensing of pain medications. Nevertheless, 10 to 20 percent of patients do require surgery, and this typically happens when the shoulder joint is affected or the shoulder blade and collarbone are both broken. • 11. Labrum Pathology: A Case Study Evaluation The clinical evaluation of labrum pathology can be difficult to diagnose due to each type of SLAP lesion having different mechanisms of injury, pain, and area that is affected. Type 1 SLAP lesions can usually be associated with rotator cuff pathology with a partial thickness tear of the supraspinatus ligament due to micro–tears. ^1,5 This is quite common in baseball players and other overhead athletes. Type II lesions can vary based on age; younger patients have more instability than older patients who tend to have rotator cuff pathology. ^1,6 Type III and IV lesions are more commonly associated with traumatic instability. ^1 As with all injuries, the evaluation should start with the history making sure to include the exact mechanism... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... ^8,5 ASI occurs when the arm is in adduction with the shoulder internally rotated. The biceps complex pulley, also known as a capsuloligamentous complex, adjoins the anterior glenoid causing injury when in extreme motions. With the PSI, the pulley is put into risk with abduction and external rotation on the posterosuperior glenoid. ^8 PSI is also associated with partial–thickness tears on the deep side of the articular surface of the rotator cuff. ^5 This can be a common cause for a peel–back mechanism associated with a SLAP lesion. ^8 Peel–back mechanisms can be produced many different ways, but are mostly seen with a SLAP lesion or internal impingement. These can occur when the shoulder is placed into abduction and extreme external rotation with a torsional force added to the labro–bicipital complex that is at the base of the biceps on the posterior superior labrum. ^1,5 This causes fatigue and failure of the humeral head that rotates medially over the upper rim of the glenoid fossa creating a shearing force. ^1,5 Increased superior labral strain in overhead athletes occurs during the late–cocking phase of throwing when arm is externally rotated. ^1 Biceps tenodesis is common after arthroscopic surgery of a SLAP lesion. Pain is felt in the shoulder due to the shoulder being innervated by sensory sympathetic fibers which are irritated by the displacement of the glenoid. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Shoulder impingement syndrome is a progressively worsening condition in many individuals. The use of a chiropractic adjustment or myofascial dry needling as forms of treatment are both yet to be differentiated as to which is more beneficial (Fitness Pain Free. 2016). The aim of this study is to research the effect of a chiropractic adjustment on the shoulder and the cervical spine, and compare to dry needling of the shoulder and cervical musculature. The research study will include three separate groups that will receive chiropractic adjustments, dry needling or a combination of the two treatments. The results will then be evaluated and an outcome will be based on these results as to which treatment is more effective. 1. PROBLEM STATEMENT The shoulder is made up of joints, bone, muscle and neurovascular tissue. These all allow for the large range of motion that the shoulder can produce in order to position the rest of the upper limb

You can be to aggressive in the NFL and seriously hurt someone despite the gear you wear. You can be a MLB pitcher and mess up on a pitch and hurt a player by throwing a pitch at a player's head. You have to be very careful how you play the sport you are playing. Sports are supposed to be competitive and fun, but you have to remember to be safe and care for the other competitors you are competing against. Sports safety is a big deal, and is very important in all sports types. Like in the NFL, there are rules to help players stay safe. One of the most common and important problems you hear about is when a player gets a concussion. A concussion is a temporary unconsciousness caused by a blow to the head. When a NFL player takes a hit to the head, for example getting tackled, that player who took the blow to the head immediately gets taken off the field and is given a thorough evaluation by a doctor that all NFL teams have present with them at games. That player could be having a fantastic game, but if the doctor has come to the conclusion that the player may have a concussion, that player will not be able to play the remainder of the game for the players safety. A concussion can become a danger to the brain of the player if the player went out and took another hit to the head. These rules from the NFL are set for a reason so that the player does not get a serious injury. Another injury that is watched carefully is caused by the face mask. The face mask penalty is when a player grabs hold of the face mask, and brings the player down by the face mask. That penalty is a 15 yard. When a player does that, it can cause serious harm to the player. You can hurt the player's neck because the face mask is connected to the helmet. If you were to move the face mask a certain way, you can harm the player's neck, or possibly break a player's neck, which could be life threatening. Coaches and staff train NFL players to never make a tackle using the face mask, because you can seriously harm a player. That is a really big deal in the NFL, or even college and high school football. Those rules are heavily enforced ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

That is what Sammy was trying to accomplish in John Updike's "A & P." Although some people believe that Sammy is a hero for standing up for his beliefs when he quit, there is conclusive evidence that he quit in an attempt to impress a girl he was obviously attracted to, Queenie. We know he is attracted to Queenie because he goes to great lengths to tell us what shelooks like, what her mannerisms are, and the way that the other girls follow her. All of the above examples demonstrate how sexually interested Sammy is in Queenie, but this one is the clincher: "Still with that prim look she lifts a folded dollar bill out of the hollow at the center of her nubbled pink top. The jar went heavy in my hand" (1028). Sammy uses Lengel's reprimand to bring attention to himself. He was acting as a boy trying to defend his girlfriend. Sammy says, "The girls, and who'd blame them, are in a hurry to get out, so I say 'I quit' to Lengel quick enough for them to hear, hoping they'll stop and watch me, their unsuspected hero." This is the most obvious attempt that Sammy makes to impress the girls. However, it doesn't work. The girls leave before Sammy can even get outside. Sammy's family says that that is the sad part of the story. Sammy also says, "and my stomach kind of fell as I felt how hard the world was going to be to me hereafter" (1030). This type of tear usually correlates with an injury to the shoulder where the shoulder has subluxated or dislocated. Sometimes, this tear occurs and the individual does not realize that the shoulder has slid out of the socket. This can make it much worse and cause other types of injuries to the ligaments around the shoulder. The second type of labrum tear is tearing within the actual labrum. Anatomy And Physiology Of Rotator Cuff Tendonitis Rotator Cuff Tendonitis Abby Johnson Mr. Mejewski Anatomy and Physiology Hour 4 What does a gardener, an athlete and a carpenter all have in common? Easy, they all have a higher risk of acquiring tendinitis in their shoulders, more specifically rotator cuff tendonitis. Shoulders are a very important component to the body, as they allow you to move your arms in any direction you choose. Seeing that rotator cuff tendinitis is very frequently diagnosed, I was interested to learn more about it and what makes it so common. Ashoulder is one of the most complex joints of the body. The anatomy of the shoulder starts where the humerus fits into the scapula almost as if it were mimicking a ball and socket. The scapula has a little tip of itself overlooking the tendons of the shoulder called the acromion and a bit of itself fanning out, a part called the coracoid. Also connected to the scapula is the clavicle or collarbone. Another very important component to the shoulder is the rotator cuff, this is the most vital part to rotator cuff tendonitis. It is composed of four muscles and of various tendons that surround the shoulder socket that allow it to connect the upper arm and the shoulder blade together. Protecting the rotator cuff is is a small sac of fluid called a bursa. The humerus fits relatively loosely into the shoulder joint. This gives the shoulder a wide range of motion, but also makes it vulnerable to injury. In macroscopic detail, the shoulder looks ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 27. Slap Tear SLAP Lesion Tear A SLAP lesion tear is an injury to the shoulder. This can cause painful symptoms and difficulty with overhead activities whether they be athletic or those of daily living. In 1985, Andrews et al were the first to describe the superior labrum tear. In their experience, they identified tears of the labrum from throwing athletes located anterosuperor near the origin of the bicep tendon. The cause of the lesion to tear was the bicep tendon being pulled off the labrum from the force generated during the throwing motion. As time went on, the labral tears got categorized into four different types of classifications called SLAP lesions by Snyder in 1990. Athletes that are involved in overhead activities tend to develop a struggle in glenohumeral internal rotation. Both internal impingement and peel back mechanisms can cause that to happen. Walch et al first described the internal impingement as an intraarticular impingement of the rotator cuff in the abducted and externally rotated shoulder. With 90 degrees of both abduction and external rotation, the articular surface of the posterior superior rotator cuff becomes pinched between the labrum and the greater tuberosity.5 The authors separated the labral lesions from SLAP lesions which extended anteriorly to the biceps anchor at the supraglenoid tubercle, concluding that internal impingement may be responsible for a subset of patients with isolated posterior SLAP tears.5 Burkhart et. al presented the peel back (posterior superior) mechanism that causes SLAP lesions. The peel back has its origin in a biceps vector change in the position of abduction and external rotation resulting in torsional forces to the labra–bicipital complex.6 Once the posterior superior labrum gets fatigued, it will start to rotate medially over the upper rim of the glenoid. I asked him to explain how he reached his opinion and he indicated that since this case involved both the neck and the left shoulder it was not amendable to a schedule loss of use. He then turned to Table 11.2 for soft tissue spine injuries. He stated the claimant had complaints with supporting imaging studies and therefore, under the Table 11.1 the appropriate rating would be 3–B. I note that Ms. Seger objected to the testimony on the issue of permanency, maintaining this issue was not before the Board. We in fact had raised the issue at the last hearing when we submitted Dr. Belmonte's report. I therefore had him testify to his opinion as to maximum medical improvement and as to permanency. Ms. Seger asked no questions on cross–examination on these issues. Cross–examination was extensive but the doctor did not change his opinion in any way. He reiterated his restrictions, which he felt were fifteen (15) to twenty (20) pounds below chest level and lifting, pushing or pulling above the chest level with the left arm. I was pleased with the doctors testimony. I feel he testified strongly and consistently with his written reports and his testimony was not altered or impeached in any meaningful way on cross–examination. We will obviously consult the minutes of the doctors testimony as the testimony was more ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 30. Epidemiology : A Painful And Debilitating Condition Epidemiology AC, is a painful and debilitating condition affecting 2% – 10% of the population (Neviaser and Hannafin, 2010: Cadogan and Mohammed, 2016). Statistical data indicates a higher prevalence in women (59% – 70%), a mean onset age of 50 – 60 years (Cadogan and Mohammed, 2016). The average condition duration presents for 30.1 months but ranges from 1 – 3.5 years (Hand et al, 2008) placing a considerable burden upon individuals and health care services. The non–dominant arm is slightly more affected then the dominant arm (Hand, Clipsham, Rees and Carr, 2008: Levine, Kashyap, Bak, Ahmad, Blaine, and Bigliani, 2007) and the risk of recurrence on the contralateral side within 5 years of the first occurrence is 6%–17%, recurrence in the ... Secondary Conditions As a direct result of acquiring AC, secondary conditions can develop. Chronic pain (often severe) affects sleep patterns, avoidance of activities and movement due to pain (fear avoidance) resulting in the withdrawal from normal daily activities and social settings (Ding, Tang, Xue, Yang, Li and He, 2014). As the condition can last up to 3 years the development of mental health conditions, anxiety and/or depression is a significant risk. A clinical study investigating the correlation between AC/FS report that 28.2% and 24.2% of the AC participants had a high risk of depression and anxiety. Patients with a clinical diagnosis of anxiety or depression reported an increase in shoulder pain, higher restriction of ROM and prevalence of sleep disturbances (Ding, Tang, Xue, Yang, Li and He, 2014). If the dominate hand is affected retraining is required to function on the non –dominate hand. Reduced or no shoulder function and strength can result in a disability that is disruptive and impacts on every aspect of daily living. This in turn can negatively impact on, finances (inability to work), friends and family (Jones, Hanchard, Hamilton and, Rangan, 2013). Treatment ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

He has dislocated his shoulder many times, but even after several hip injuries, he has never dislocated his hip. a.Compare and contrast the anatomical physiology of the shoulder joint and the hip joint. The shoulder and hip are considered ball and socket joints. In the shoulder, the "ball" of the humerus fits into the "socket" formed by the shoulder blade. In the hip, the "ball' of the femur fits into the "socket" of the pelvis. These joints allow the motion in the body. • 33. Rotator Cuff Research Paper Rotator cuff surgery affects the function of the shoulder. It is very painful injury and there is loss in strength. If the rotator cuff tendon becomes inflamed or is partially torn, it can be painful and will most limit shoulder movement. This injury occurs from a sudden impact, like falling on your arm which might accrue in motocross, snowboarding, playing football, and similar collision sport. Activities that might cause overload to the tendon have a possibility to tear the tendon. Other ways a rotator cuff can tears is from old age and over use over the years. Treatment depends on the damage done to the tendon. By having an accurate diagnosis, a careful physical examination of the shoulder and x–ray examination of the shoulder can help ... However, increased instances of failure have led to massive recall of this medical device along with lawsuits. Overall, there are three types of claims associated by recalled products, defective manufacture claim, failure to warn claim and defective design claim. The failure to warn claim occurs in cases where the manufacturer of a product fails to notify or educate users on the defect and risk associated with using the recalled product. Under the defective design claim, the product manufacturer is held responsible for failure to provide adequate information regarding product development and failing to test and foresee defects that may be caused by product failure. • 35. Pros And Cons Of Rotator Cuff Surgery Rotator Cuff Surgery Your rotator cuff consists of four muscles in your shoulder that allows you to move your arm away from your body. These muscles have tendons, which connect them to the head of your upper arm bone or humerus. When a tear occurs in these muscles, you will experience extreme pain on motion. A rotator cuff tear is also extremely painful at night. If left untreated, it may result in arm weakness. Rotator cuff surgery may be required to repair re–attach torn tendons to the shoulder. This may be followed by rotator cuff exercises after surgery to promote further healing and return of function. Part 1: When Is Rotator Cuff Surgery Necessary? A partial rotator cuff tear may not need surgery. Conservative treatment consists of rest and exercise, which help to heal your shoulder. This is... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Surgery may also be recommended for a tendon that is torn due to recent injury or when the tear is not a result of long–standing rotator cuff problems. Part 2: How to Prepare for the Rotator Cuff Surgery To prepare for rotator cuff surgery, inform your doctor about the current treatments you are taking. Two weeks before the surgery, you may have to stop taking some medicines that can interfere with blood clotting such as aspirin, naproxen or ibuprofen. You will also have to see a doctor to evaluate your medical condition if you have any health problems such as diabetes or heart disease. Other factors that may affect your surgery are your smoking habits and alcohol intake, which you must avoid before surgery. Tell your doctor if you have any acute illness such as flu or fever before surgery. On the day of surgery, avoid eating or drinking anything six to 12 hours before the operation. Just take a small sip of water to ingest any medication you are asked to take. Go to the hospital early so you will arrive on time for your surgery. Part 3: How Is Rotator Cuff Surgery ... • 36. Impingement Syndrome Case Report Hi everyone, Impingement syndrome have two types – external impingement and internal impingement (McKinnis, 2014). External impingement compresses the rotator cuff tendons in the supraspinatus outlet when the arm is elevated (McKinnis, 2014, p. 544). On the other hand, internal impingement is the compression of the posterior capsule and rotator cuff between the humeral head and glenoid when the arm is elevated and rotated (McKinnis, 2014, p. 544). The patient's history and physical exam are diagnostic for impingement syndrome. To further define the corresponding soft tissue pathologies such as rotator cuff tears, labral tears, and tendinitis, a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is utilized (McKinnis, 2014). • 37. Bursitis Research Paper The disorder/disease I decided to write about is called Bursitis. By definition, Bursitis are caused when bursae, a fluid–filled sac at the joints, gets inflamed. A person with Bursitis will have trouble with movement or pressure because the fluid–filled sacs help pressure and lubricate points between our tendons, bones, and muscles located near our joints; allowing movement in joints without much friction. When a person has Bursitis, their fluid–filled sac gets inflamed so movement and pressure will cause pain. In our human body, the shoulder, elbow, ankle, knee, buttocks, hips, and thigh are the most common parts of our body that are likely to experience Bursitis. Why? Because those are a few places where joints can be found. Bursitis is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

CONCLUSION: Regarding Acupuncture 2x4 to Right shoulder; CA MTUS does not consistently and overwhelmingly support the use of acupuncture in the management of shoulder injuries. However, ODG states that among those shoulder indications found to have positive outcomes from acupuncture were rotator cuff tendonitis, frozen shoulder, subacromial impingement syndrome, and rehab following arthroscopic acromioplasty. Additionally, ODG supports an initial trial of 3 to 6 visits. The patient is s/p right shoulder arthroscopy with acromioplasty and rotator cuff repair on 08/13/15. Considering the continued upper extremity pain and limited ROM following surgery; the medical necessity of acupuncture has been substantiated. The shoulder joint, is commonly referred to as the glenohumeral joint (ball and socket joint consisting of the ball/end of the humerus bone that sits in the socket of the shoulder). The overall shoulder region also entails the shoulder girdle (the scapula/shoulder blade), and clavicle (collar bone). The shoulder joint is predominantly vulnerable to injury because the large range of movement that it is capable of and the relatively small joint surfaces. When the ticking of the clock became my own heartbeat, and I could hear each individual squeak of sneakers on the court, I waited for the ball to come sailing through the air as the accompanying adrenaline surged through my veins. This high seemed to go on forever, yet in reality it was only a mere second. Now with this jolt of energy I was ready. I received the ball, and, with a quick pump fake and cross over dribble I would be around the opponents' point guard. I would come to a jump stop and shoot! Time stopped as the buzzer went off and I waited to see if the ball would drop into the basket, it made its usual arching course to the basket, flipping over itself again and again. But this time I was on the ground writhing in pain. It was a moment. I thought it was life changing, but actually, it just ended my athletic career. Aftershoulder surgery, many hours of physical therapy, and countless comeback attempts, I was waiting for my next moment to set me on a new path. It led me into the kitchen.
