Rhythm and Blues (R&B) is a genre of popular African-American music which originated in the
1940’s where urbane, rocking, jazz based music was becoming more popular. R&B lyrics are often
based on the experience of pain and relationship failures.

10. Target Audience – Katz, Maslow, Hartley and/or socio-economic needs
I am aiming to target my magazine at a ethnically diverse audience with the ages of 16-25 for
both genders as I believe the music and artists of the R&B genre that my magazine provides
would appeal to a worldwide E-C2 class market, I will do this by using familiar artists (such as:
Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez and Kanye West etc.) and songs that are top of the charts. My
magazine will boost esteem and self-actualization as it provides articles of artists and their
personal lives which will inspire and give the readers an insight of their lives. The uses of the
magazine is the personal articles of the artists and the gratification is the puff promotion of the
trip to New York city, which I believe the readers would appeal to and make use of.
The target audience for my magazine can be denoted as…
Specifically interested in the R&B genre
What is the USP of this magazine? YOU MUST refer to specific conventions/stories from you
research
From the research completed into this media product, I think the USP is the hybrid of content
my magazine provides such as including articles of the artists and behind the scenes of the
making of their music, which the audience may find appealing because they are getting an
insight of what goes on in the minds of such aspiring artists.
11. In what ways does your Media product use, develop
or challenge forms and conventions of real media
products?
Although my magazine of inspiration are of different genres to mine I took inspiration of the format that they
used and alternated it to suit my magazine.
12. I got inspired to place my cover lines behind my main image which creates the illusion of a full
page, this way it shows the readers that the magazine is jam packed with content. The colour
scheme Billboard used is very classic and plain: the use of the plain white background and bold
writing with the hint of the yellow inside the ‘d’ of Billboard, inspired me to stick with 3 colours
which are white, black and gold. The placements are very similar on both magazines apart from
the masthead which I placed to be visible whereas Billboard placed it behind the main image.
FRONT COVER
13. CONTENTS PAGE
I liked the idea of having a well organised contents page because it will be easier for my audience to find
what they want to read. Which I took inspiration from NME magazine.
14. DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD
My double page spread is inspired by the magazine Mayhem. I took the idea of having
the artists name stand out so the readers are aware that the article is about
that artist, I also liked the idea of a question and answer article as I believe this format
is a lot easier to read compared to having a bulk of text which may not be appealing
for readers. However I did not exactly conform to the placement of my magazine of
inspiration and instead placed my questions between my main image so I am able to
get more texts in compared to the boxes my magazine of inspo uses. I also placed an
image of the album the artist is bringing out for promotion.
15. How does your media product represent particular social
groups?
I am aiming to target my magazine at a ethnically diverse audience with the ages of 16-25
for both genders as I believe the music and artists of the R&B genre that my magazine
provides would appeal to a worldwide E-C2 class market. I have done this my providing
the reader relevant music that may be growing or on trend in the charts. I have tried
making it appealing to both genders by using a mixture of star appeal from Selena Gomez
to Kanye West, giving all of the readers “male/female gaze”.
16. FRONT COVER: My focus group collectively agreed that a high quality image,
interesting headline and cover lines which I tried to incorporate so it would be
a magazine that my audience would want to read.
CONTENTS PAGE:
QUESTIONNARE AND RESULTS ANALYSIS
17. Photography Planning – Front Cover
The look I was trying to portray was edgy and dark which I believed would go well with the Interview
because it is all about empowerment and getting over a breakup.
MAIN IMAGE
18. These are the imaages that I ended up not using as I did not think it best suited my front cover
compared to the image that I ended up using.
UNUSED FRONT COVER IMAGES
19. Photography Planning - Contents
I used Lucy as my model throughout my magazine I also asked my friend James to become my
model to portray Justin Bieber because I believed he has the features to portray him well.
20. UNUSED CONTENTS IMAGES
These are the images I did not end up using because I believe the images I used for my contents
Were better suited for it that these images.
21. Photography Planning - Interview
I wanted my model to wear black clothing to
signify the grief of a break up. The choice of
clothing is slightly revealing which shows
that although she is grieving she is still
showing off her assets as a woman. I wanted
her hair and makeup to look effortless to go
along with the idea of grieving yet still
looking empowered.
22. UNUSED DOUBLE PAGE IMAGES
I believe that these images did not portray the emotion I wanted to express which was the
feeling of strength and power after getting over a rough relationship.
23. ANALYSING MY FRONT COVER
MASTHEAD
I chose to name my magazine Deluxe as it means “luxurious or
sumptuous; of a superior kind”. I wanted readers to know that my
magazine is of high quality and is superior compared to other music
magazines.
MAIN HEADLINE
I wanted my main headline to stand out which is why it is a bigger font
compared to my cover lines. I also made ‘Selena’ a different colour so
the reader will easily identify that the article is about her. I wanted to
use Selena Gomez as my star appeal because she has become very
relevant and popular in the music industry as she has been constantly
releasing songs that have become successful.
PUFF PROMOTION
I included puff promotion which I believe my readers would
appeal to. Being into R&B I think they would enjoy a trip to the
capital of the music industry.
COVER LINES
I wanted to include several cover lines that I believed would intrigue
the reader to flick through my magazine and possibly purchase it.
CONVERGENCE, MULTIMEDIA AND PRICE
It is important that Include extra features to the magazine such
as the QR code where they are able to access more content
online, along side with media links so they know where to find
them. The price is also important so they know exactly how
much they would have to pay.
24. ANALYSING MY CONTENTS PAGE
MASTHEAD
I included the mast head above along side with the
words contents so the reader is aware that they are
reading what content is in the magazine.
CONTENTS
I wanted to include a small masthead above the
content which I think will give the reader a brief
idea of what the articles are about. The contents
are placed under different categories, these set of
contents are the ones found on the cover lines of
my front cover.
EDITORS NOTE
The editor’s note is an introduction to the readers of
what they will expect from the magazine.
SUPPORTING IMAGES
I wanted to include supporting images so the readers
get a feel of what they are going to read in the
magazine.
25. ANALYSING MY DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD
MASTHEAD
I decided to use my stars name as the
masthead so it stands out and my
readers know who the article is about
without having to fully read through
the texts.
INTRODUCTION
I wanted to introduce my article
before going straight into it so my
readers know an idea of what the
article will be about.
ARTICLE
I wanted to go for a question and
answer format because I believe it is a
lot easier and more entertaining to
read compared to reading a big chunk
of text.
SUPPORTING IMAGE
I wanted to include an image of the
album because it is relevant to the
article in terms of talking about her
album. It is also a form of promotion
to get readers to listen to her new
song.
