2. Question 1What is your gender?
50%50%
Male Female
We chose to question 20 people within our questionnaire,
10 male and 10 female. This allows for unbiased results as
both genders had equal input meaning that the results
wouldn't be one sided. In addition, the indie/pop genre isn't
dominated by one gender in particular, and our target audience
is both genders. Therefore by ensuring that both genders
have an equal input, we are able to get the most accurate
and relevant results for our genre. Furthermore, it allows for a
difference of opinion to be generated, as if we chose just to
question all females, the results wouldn't be varied as females
may have similar views or interests regarding music videos.

12-17 18-24 25-34
As you can see from the results, the majority
of people questioned were between around
15-23. This is useful as young people avidly
listen to music, therefore their input will help
us to create an appealing music video that
will attract our target audience. Furthermore, the
older generation may not have such of an interest
in the latest music and various unique genres,
therefore we chose only to question people
between the ages of 12 and 34 as they are
likely to keep up to date with music trends
and listen to a wide variety of modern artists.

The most popular indie/pop artists were Lana
Del Rey and Hozier; this shows that these
two artists are firm favourites with those questioned
due to their unique style and gripping lyrics.
When creating our own music video, we will
take inspiration from both these artists and
use similar features that can be seen in their
music videos. By doing this, it will ensure
that our piece will not only appear professional
and conventional, but will appeal to our target
audience as it will have similar features to
existing, successful indie/pop music videos.

Rarely Not at all
From the results, it is clear that those questioned avidly
watch music videos as the majority of people
said that they watched music videos once a week.
This highlights that our target audience have a keen
interest in music and therefore would be
likely to watch our music video. Those who regularly
watch music videos may be interested in
discovering new artists. This also shows that
collectively our young target audience all have
a similar, keen interest in music; this
is useful when creating our own music video
as it allows us to know the demographic that
would be interested and then target
these people.

Warm hues
Monochromatic
A range of settings
Black and white effects
Flashbacks/montages
As you can see from the results collated, the features
that our target audience would be most interested in
seeing are warm hues and montage editing. From
many of the existing indie/pop music videos
we have analysed, warm toned post production
colour correction is hugely common and useful
in creating a nostalgic, reminiscent feel to a piece. We
will use this feature when creating our own music
video as it will help to convey emotions of love and
a journey. In addition, when exploring the themes
of relationships, montage editing is an apparent
feature in helping to show the development of
a relationship and the binary ‘ups’ and ‘downs’
that come with them. Furthermore, it aids in
creating a sense of realism that may be relatable
to the audience viewing our music video.

Urban environment

Other
The most popular location for our music video to
be filmed in is an outdoors location, such as a forest,
that surrounds nature. If we choose to use this setting within
our own music video, it will help to convey a somewhat
etherial, mystic feel to the piece which is conventional
of the unique indie-pop genre. However, many indie/
pop music videos are not just filmed in one setting;
therefore we could use a range of settings to
further add to the sense of realism, and allow
the audience to follow the relationship being
explored and witness the memories that the couple
have shared. Filming in a house setting would
allow for a relatable narrative to be formed, meaning
that the audience could relate to the action
appearing on screen.
8. Question 7Would you prefer a more conceptual based video or a

Conceptual Performance
It is clear that the target audience much prefer
conceptual based music videos that explore
a certain theme or idea, as oppose to a performance
based video showcasing the artist on stage. When
creating our own music video, we will ensure that
we make a conceptual based video that conveys
a range of themes that are relatable to the target
audience. By using a conceptual based video, a
clear narrative can be developed and built upon
which will allow the audience to engage with the
storyline, and feel somewhat invested in the
relationship that will be shown in our music video.

Romance Rebellion
Criminality Break-ups
Death Perseverance
A journey Other
Themes of romance, a journey and break-ups proved to
be most popular amongst those asked; this may be
due to the fact that these themes play a part
in many peoples lives, and people experience
break-ups and romance. By conveying these themes
within our own piece, we would be able to build
somewhat of a rapport with the audience
as the narrative of the music video may be
relatable. Themes of romance prove popular
within the indie/pop genre as the theme can
be explored both conventionally and
unconventionally in order to conform to the
conventions of the genre. In addition, romance and
break-ups will also appeal to our young audience
as romance is stereotypically idealised
and focused upon by young people.
10. Question 9Would you be willing to listen to and watch new, smaller

Yes No Sometimes
From the questionnaire results, it is clear
that the majority of those questioned
would be willing to listen to new upcoming
artists/bands. This is useful as if we use
a less recognisable artists song when
creating our own music video, our target
audience would still be willing to listen to
the music and appreciate smaller, more
indie artists. As we have chosen to use
the song ‘Sadness is taking over’ by
the small band ‘Flora Cash’, we expect
that despite not being a hugely popular artist,
there will still be interest from our audience.
