1) Questionnaires were distributed to 30 random Year 13 students to analyze music video preferences. Most respondents preferred a hybrid music video containing different elements.
2) More male students responded than female. The target audience was determined to be 17-18 year olds to match the character in the video.
3) Most important findings were that YouTube is commonly used to find new music videos and collaborations can help artists reach wider audiences. Respondents also preferred music videos that seemed like movie scenes.
2. Questionnaire responses :
We had sent out thirty questionnaires, and within a day of sending them out, we received all thirty back. The
questionnaires had been passed out to various Year 13’s within our sixth form, none of them had been
specifically selected to answer the questionnaire, as they were chosen at random. However, this data is not
accounted for the entirety of the sixth form as we had given out questionnaires to under half the number of
students within the sixth form. We had also generated the questionnaire to our set target audience, which
was the older students within the sixth form. We were not able to send out questionnaires to the entire older
half of the sixth form due to time constrictions.
3. Analysis of responses.
The target age of our audience was
predetermined to 17-18 year olds (Year
13’s). We specifically targeted this age
group because the character that will
appear in our music video, is roughly the
same age. As can be seen, more males
than females had responded to the
questionnaire that we had handed out,
showing that they appeared to be more
willing to respond to questions regarding
their music tastes. .
4. What type of music video do you prefer?
The chart above shows the specific type of music
video that people prefer. The overall response that
we had received was that a hybrid/mixture music
video, one that contained two or more of the set
type of music video. Just under half of the
responses had stated that they preferred a mixture
music video. Using this information, we will cater
this to our own music video, ensuring that we
reach the biggest audience possible.
5. How important is a music video to you?
This graph shows the number of people that
view the importance of the music video, which
is relevant to us as it shows how many people
will actually pay attention to the music video
that we create; however, looking at the data,
the largest response for this particular
question was that the importance of a music
video all depends on the song. This then
shows us that in order for our music video to
be viewed by the biggest possible audience, it
not only needs to be an effective looking
video, but one with an enjoyable song that
people will be engaged in viewing.
6. Does social media have any influence on whether or not you
share music videos?
This pie chart shows whether or not people actively search out and share
a particular music video that they have enjoyed, thus showing us how to
appeal and market to our target audience. There was very little
information obtained from this question, however we did discover that
11/30 of our participants were a passive audience, meaning that they did
not care about sharing content themselves, and would instead actively
seek out the content themselves. Another 11 participants had mentioned
that the success and popularity of the song depending whether or not they
would share content for the entertainment of others. However, it is
possible to be an active and passive audience member at the same time,
the active audience member would willing express their views and share
the music video, whilst the passive audience member would accept the
views/opinions and observe the video. It is highly possible that everyone
has been both a passive and active audience member when watching
particular media products, especially when it comes to music videos. At
first, you may be a passive audience member and watch the video when
chosen to, and then possibly at a later date, actively seek out the video to
share with someone else.
7. How do you find out about an artist releasing a
music video?
50% of responses said that they find out about
music videos from YouTube, a platform that is
used for sharing and viewing a variety of different
videos, including music videos. This suggests that
this is a suitable place for our music to be viewed
by a wider audience. However, getting views on
YouTube can be rather difficult, and our video all
depends on the viral success of it. In order to
generate views of YouTube we would need to
create a video that is visually pleasing and
creative enough to ensure that enough people
view the music video.
8. Would you be more intrigued to watch a music
video if it was part of a movie soundtrack?
This shows us that the majority of responses we
had (20/30) would be more inclined to watch a
music video if it were part of a movie soundtrack.
Music videos that are a part of movie soundtracks
often have a movie-esque look to them, and are
often created in a higher quality way than regular
music videos ; the higher quality of the video then
attracts the audience to it, purely because of how it
looks. This then initiates us to make our music
video look as much as a movie with the equipment
that we have available in order to reach and attract
a wider audience.
9. Do you think collaborations help an artist reach a
wider audience?
The response for this question was heavily
overwhelming, 29 responses had stated that
collaborations help an artist reach a wider audience,
when asked why this was 18/30 responses had stated
that a collaboration would widen the artists’ audience and
fanbase, and 8/30 stated that the collaboration would
promote the artists and give them more recognition, this
help us as when looking into our own artist could help us
trying to expand our audience.
10. Are there any areas that are considered unsuitable
for a music video?
The data shown here, displays the information for the
question “Are there any areas considered unsuitable for a
music video?”. This question was included to ensure that
we would keep within certain guidelines that the audience
expects and also shows us what we should be wary of if
we include these aspects into our music video. The
largest response that we had for this question was
directed towards extreme and excessive nudity, which is
something that we were not planning to include in our
music video anyway, and this assures us that the
audience does not expect to see such things in our own
video.
11. Do you think there should be parental advisory
restrictions on music videos?
The graph here shows how our audience feels about
parental restrictions on music videos, a majority of the
response we received had said that the restrictions
depended on the content of the music video, using this
information as well as the data shown above, because we
are targeting an older audience, they would know what is
suitable for them to watch. However, videos with adult
content and age restrictions generally have the most views,
purely because of the explicit content in the video, people
want to see the content of the video to see why it has an
age restriction on it in the first place. This may be
something we look into when it comes to create our own
music video .
12. Do you think social media platforms such as
facebook and twitter should have an age
restriction on the music videos that are shared?
Again, the majority of the responses we received
had stated that the restrictions all depend on the
content of the video, it shows that we need to
consider all the elements of the music video that
may be considered a restriction and avoid trying to
include this in our own music video, however,
because our music video is aimed towards an older
audience, our music video content and lyrics can
be aimed towards this older audience without
having to be too concerned towards a younger
audience.
