1. Survey Analysis
30 People were surveyed. We felt like this was enough to generate an
accurate result on what people like in their music video’s and what
they like within that music genre.
In order to appeal to our audience we have to use our survey results
to decide how our own product can appeal to a wider range of people,
including different genders and a wide range of ages.

What age are you?
It was important that we got as many of each
gender as possible but still an equal amount as
possible to that the results are as accurate as
can be so that when the data is used, it appeals
to both genders.
This is similar with age, although considerably less
were surveyed who are over 60, it has to be
considered that on later questions such as how often
they listen to music, their response may have been
that they don’t or if they do, it is vary rare or
“outdated”.
3. How often do you listen to
music?
Regularly
Not Often
Never
Once or Twice
a week
Other
This was a very important
question to ask as it helps us to
determine how far to use the
results collected. For example, if
the majority of people surveyed
didn’t listen to music then their
responses would not be valid or
helpful to the input of the final
product.
There would only be a tiny
proportion of the result which
would not be valid as the
person who never listens to
music could not have much of
an effective input as they have
a lack of preference or
knowledge about music and
therefore, the videos.
4. Youtube
Spotify
TV
Radio

Devices
If you do listen to music , what do you listen to it on?
The importance of this is that it gives us an indication of whether or not
the listeners have knowledge on music videos and whether that is
something which people find important or helps when listening to the
song. We decided to split the responses. So, if the participant chose
Youtube or TV, the likelihood is that they also watch the videos and
therefore their responses are going to be the most helpful whereas
people who listen to d=saved music, the radio, spotify or itunes will listen
to the music only.

This was a defining factor in helping us chose which genre of music to choose.
From these results, we have decided to do a pop video as it was evidently the
most popular.
6. Do you think it is important that the
music video relates to the song lyrics?
Yes

When looking at Goodwin’s
theory, we thought this was a vital
and very useful question to ask as
it helps us to decide whether to
apply Goodwin’s theory to the
music video.
Clearly, from the results, most
people think it is very important
that the video and the song are
related, even if only slightly.
7. What kind of music video do you
prefer?

Story Based

More than one option was allowed. It is clear that the more popular are the story
based and the linear narrative. The performance based is also a very popular type of
music video; fragmented videos are less popular and this could be because the cross
cutting creates a sense of confusion for the watcher.
8. If thee is a story based video, what
kind of story line would you prefer?
Romance
Murder/ Death/Crime
Relationship problems/

We predict that
because of what is
most common in
music videos, that
this is the reason
why relationships/
breakups are the
most popular in the
music survey. This is
likely to be an
aspect which we
include in our own
product.
9. What story line would you expect to
see in a pop video?
Relationships
Parties
Public spaces
being occupied
by young people
Teenagers
Others
As there was more
than one option to
be ticked on this
question, it shows
that there is a lot of
cross overs in the
answers. This
suggests that a
strong stereotype of
teenagers being
represented
negatively in music
videos.
For example, the parties and relationships highlight that teenagers are likely to be
involved in these, demonstrating that they are delinquent and likely creating
problems which created a negative impression of this social group which may be
represented in our own music video.
10. What kind of props would you expect
to see in a pop video?
Household
objects
Drugs/ Alcohol
Cars
Weapons
Other
We asked this as a more
open question and allowed
participants to select more
than one answer as we
knew there would be some
cross overs.
The use of the things which
are expected to see as well
as the props allow us to
have a clear indication of
what kind of scene people
are used to seeing in existing
pop videos.
