divisions are settled on the 38th parallel. North Korea also know as Democratic People's Republic of Korea had numerous amounts of weapons from
both the Soviet Union and the Chinese Communist Party. had sent a guerrilla and other subversive tactics against South Korea, The Republic of Korea,
trying to take control of the South to have control of the whole peninsula. The official Korean War started on June 25,1950.

The Vietnam War: The Korean War
The Korean War was a conflict fought during 1950–1953 between Communist–backed North Korea and the U.N.–backed South Korea. The division of
Korea dates back to the early 20th century, when Japan and Russia fought each other for control of the Korean Peninsula.
After Japan's victory against Russia, they annexed Korea and installed a "puppet leader" to rule the country with the Japanese' influence. By 1926,
Japan had complete control of Korea. After World War II, the defeat of the Japanese Empire led to the relinquishing of its colonies. One of those
colonies was the nation of Korea. A deal between two of the victorious Allied

It was fought during the beginning of the Cold War, arguably one of the most important events of the 20th century. Many people were killed because
of this war and it still affects how things came to be in both North Korea and South Korea. The Korean War's effect on history is great, especially for
the Korean people. This war led to the creation of the DMZ, the line that separates North and South Korea which is still in use to this day. South
Korea is a huge ally to the U.S. ever since the korean war. It is also historically significant because we used Korea as a power play against the
USSR. When we took a dive in Vietnam the U.S government was ridiculed because of its failure to deal with the communist country of vietnam.
The U.S. had lost. The U.S. needed redemption so they used korea as a power play and heavily backed south korea when the south had almost lost
all of their territory. As soon as the U.S intervened the North was pushed back to the 38th parallel and even a little bit passed that. This "win"
eventually helped lead to the downfall of the USSR, the main enemy of the U.S. at the time. The country of Korea is also historically significant
because we still have solid diplomatic relations with south korea today. And as early as April of 2018 have agreed to end the war between North and
South korea officially. They also

The Yalta Conference: The Myth Of Division Of The World
The Yalta Conference held in February, 1945 where the representatives of the three winning countries in the World War Two met to discuss Europe 's
post–war lay–out is often referred to as the Myth of Division of the World (Buffet & Heuser, 1998, p. 80). During this conference the United States, the
United Kingdom and the USSR, represented by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Prime Minister Winston Churchill and Premier Joseph Stalin
respectively developed the peace strategies for the future, some of which, however, turned out quite differently. Namely, President Roosevelt suggested
a trusteeship in Korea whereby four countries (including China) would help Korea to manage its internal affairs for twenty to thirty years. Stalin
accepted this proposal without going any further into the subject (A.A.Gromyko, 1979, pp. 140–142). As a later result, the US–USSR agreement on
respective spheres of influence in Korea divided Korea by means of the 38th parallel where the northern part ended up under the Soviet 's control while
the Americans controlled the South (Lowe, 1986, p. 19). This demarcation very much shaped the future of Korea actually dividing the world and
significantly contributing to the development of the painful conflict between the Southern and the Northern part of one country also known as the
Korean War. On June 25, 1950 North Korean troops crossed the 38th parallel capturing Seoul three days later. The South Korean government,

United States Involvement During The Korean War
June 25th, 1950 was the first military action taken during the Cold War. This was the start of the Korean War when close to 750,000 North Korean
soldiers crossed the 38th parallel and entered South Korea. North Korea had been Communist and ruled by Ho Chi Minh while South Korea was not
communist and were being ruled by Ngo Dinh Diem, who was a very harsh, cruel leader who killed many of his own people. However, the United
States supported South Korea because they were against communist and was trying to practice their policy of containment. Americans were scared that
the Korean War would begin to spread communism due to the Soviet Union's involvement. A goal of this war for the United States was to keep the
communists from North Korea north

The Function of the Truman Doctrine and Marshall Plan in...
The foreign policy of the United States during the Cold War fully supported the growth of democratic nations. The USSR, however, wanted countries
to become communist like them. These opposing views led to tension between the two nations. As a result, in 1947, President Truman issued the
Truman Doctrine which stated that the United States would supply aid to any country as long as they pledged to be democratic. The Marshall plan
was enacted in 1948 and it was similar to the Truman Doctrine except it provided financial aid to these countries. In the late 1940s and early 1950s, the
United States used its foreign policy to help countries resist communist influence. The Korean War , although successful in preventing the spread of
communism, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Overall, the United States' mission was successful. They, along with United Nations forces, were able to push back the communists to avoid disaster.
This was extremely important because the United States knew that Asia was very susceptible to the "domino theory" (meaning that once one nation
became communist, they would all become communist) due to the sharing of ideals. The Civil War in Greece and the dispute over the Dardanelles of
Turkey allowed for the implementation of the Truman Doctrine and the Marshall Plan. Greece had been struggling against communists who wanted to
take over the government. The United States, paranoid about the spreading of communism, sent $300 million in aid through troops and financial
means. As a result, Greece was able to resist the communistic attempt to overthrow the democratic government. It was with the financial help of the
U.S. that Greece was able to fight off those who threatened their values. This helped Greece but it mostly helped the United States since it was one less
country that fell to communism. Additionally, the USSR's leader, Joseph Stalin, wanted partial control of the Dardanelles between the Mediterranean
Sea and the Black Sea. Immediately, the U.S. government realized that they must send aid to Turkey. Otherwise, the USSR might have turned Turkey
into a communist country. As with Greece, the United States sent military aid and financial help of $100

Overview After World War II the United States armed forces and intelligence agencies were affected by force reduction and spending cuts. With
communism looming in Europe the remaining intelligence personnel started focusing their attention back towards their traditional geographic area of
Europe. Yet, Korea was becoming a hotbed of activity. The United States was forced to figure out what to do with the country after Japan's withdrawal,
in addition to the fighting happening along the Chinese–Korean border. Eventually a resolution was establish; the Soviet Union would assists the
Koreans north of the 38th parallel, and the United States would assist to the south. A few years after this agreement, the United States pulled out and

One lesson is to understand both individual and group perceptions. Perceptions are "strongly influenced by" past experiences. Since the military and
political leaders during the Korean War were largely the same leaders in place during Pearl Harbor and WWII, the perception they had fell in line with
their past experiences. The United States had already formulated their opinion about the Soviet Union and its control over the communist countries.
Even though new information presented itself before the beginning of the war and through the invasion of China, the mindset of the military leaders
was already established, and they were resistant to change. In order to combat falling into preconceived perceptions an analyst needs to outline the
assumptions and inferences made through the course of

38th Parallel
The film was based of Kim Gibson an American citizen, who was born in North Korea. Most importantly, the film explored North Korea's history in
relation to South Korea, and the United States. Kim went on a quest to see how other Koreans felt about the 38th parallel and the United States in
South Korea. I enjoyed taking the time to go to this screening, because I am now able to understand the Korean perspective about war, Americans, and
the 38th parallel.

I learned a lot throughout the film, regarding Korea. Korea was very divided between North and South, but also diverse between themselves. The
Soviet Union occupied North Korea, while the United States occupied South Korea. North Korea wouldn't attack South Korea, due to American soldiers
stationed there.
Eventually though North Korea launched a surprise attack on South Korea. Which was known as the Korean War. The Korean War was one of the
most tragic periods for Korea. Millions of civilians died and nothing came out of the war. The two sides signed a cease–fire line along the 38th parallel,
which is the boundary between the two Koreas.
After the war, both Koreas moved quickly to rebuild and modernize. North Korea, which was more industrialized than South Korea before the war,
rebuilt quicker. Unfortunately, North Korea's economy suffered, because of the break–up with the Soviet Union. Eventually South Korea evolved into
a industrial society, who became a heavy exporter to the United States. Overall after the war both Koreas have been successful, but still face the

The United Nations Security Council Essay
"War can be of two kinds, in the sense that either the objective is to overthrow the enemy–to render him politically helpless or militarily impotent, thus
forcing him to sign whatever peace we please; or merely to occupy some of his frontier districts so that we can annex them or use them for bargaining
at the peace negotiations."
Introduction
Prior to 1950 the small country of Korea had been split laterally across the 38th Parallel, the Soviets supporting the north and the United States
supporting the south. The country was patchy in culture, the north with a communist center under the Democratic People's Republic (DPRK), and the
south being republican under the Republic of Korea (ROK). Both governments sought to unify the country under one leadership. In the summer of
1950 the north sent an attack below the 38th Parallel, advancing towards Seoul the capital of South Korea. The United Nations Security Council
requested military support in Korea. Without hesitation President Harry Truman sent American troops to South Korea. The war persisted over three
years and cost the lives of many American troops. The restrictions that would prevent the United States from attaining complete and swift success in
Korea were the changes amid military and political objectives, misguided leadership, forgoing the use of nuclear weapons, independent foreign actors,
and prisoners of war at war termination. An outcome of the Second World War for the United States was an economic initiative

What Are The Causes Of The Korean War
The Korean War was part of the U.S. policy of containment. America's containment policy is very simple, represents a rare instance of politicians to do
what they said they would do. The United States said they would in their power to use any means to prevent the spread of communism. Communist

The Korean War began in 1950 when Communist–controlled North Korea invaded South Korea in an attempt to bring all of Korea under Communist

The Korean War: A Government Statement Analysis
On March 30, 2013, North Korean TV channel KCNA broadcasts a government statement declaring it is entering a 'state of war' with South Korea.
South Korea's defence ministry said these threats are 'unacceptable' and threaten peace. The statement came a day after the North staged a large
military rally through the streets of Pyongyang. The White House warned North Korea that following Friday that military confrontation would lead to
further isolation. The two Koreas have technically been at war for more than half a century, yet they have never signed a formal peace deal after the
Korean war in the 1950s. National Security Council spokeswoman, Caitlin Hayden, said, "We continue to take additional measures against the North

Nearly 5 million people died. More than half of the population, about 10 percent of Korea's prewar population, were civilians. Almost 40,000
Americans died in action in Korea, and more than 100,000 were wounded. The armistice was only a ceasefire agreement, not a formal peace treaty
ending the war. A final peace treaty was supposed to be on the agenda at the Geneva Conference of 1954, but by the time that conference began, the
French colonial war in Indochina took precedence. Ultimately, the United States and the ROK signed a mutual defense treaty, and U.S. troops became
a part of the DMZ patrols on a semi–permanent basis. The Korean War had long–lasting consequences for the entire region. Though it failed to unify
the country, the United States achieved its larger goals, including preserving and promoting NATO interests and defending Japan. The war also resulted
in a divided Korea and complicated any possibility for accommodation between the United States and China. The Korean War served to encourage the
U.S. Cold War policies of containment and militarization, setting the stage for the further enlargement of the U.S. defense perimeter in Asia. These
Cold War policies would eventually lead the United States to regional actions that included its attempts at preventing the fall of Vietnam to

The Cold War
The Cold War was the name given to the political economic, military and ideological contention that occurred between the United States and its allies
and the Soviet Union and their allies after World War II. The two forces never directly engaged in military activity in light of the fact that both had
atomic weapons that if utilized, might have had crushing outcomes for both sides. Instead, proxy wars were battled. A proxy war results when
contradicting forces utilize outsiders as substitutes for battling each one other and is ordinarily launched by a power that does not itself partake. The
Korean and Vietnam wars are two examples of proxy wars on the grounds that the U.S. and the Soviet Union did not directly engage one another
however, Soviet endeavors to spread and bring together both Korea and Vietnam under communist rule provoked mediation either by theUnited States
and/or by their allies. These two occasions were simply a few of the impacts of the Cold War in Asia. This paper will examine each war individually
and in more detail and endeavor to persuade that the Korean and Vietnam Wars were the immediate aftereffects of Soviet endeavors to expand
communist influence in Asia and the United States and their allies' approach of forestalling and holding such endeavors.

How Did Joseph Stalin Impact On American Society
Joseph Stalin has had more impact on American society than any other person for the three following reasons. Joseph Stalin and the USSR were the
opposing side to America in the Arms Race. Joseph Stalin and the USSR started the space race. Joseph Stalin urged North Koreans to invade South
Korea, causing the Korean War. Joseph Stalin made a huge impact on society when he started building as many weapons of mass destruction as he
could. Both sides started building hydrogen bombs, which are even more destructive than atomic bombs. We poured tons of money into the building of
these weapons, and we just wouldn't stop building weapons. American life changed drastically because they had to prepare for a nuclear attack. They
were forced to read pamphlets and listen to an watch messages telling them them how survive an atomic attack. Some American families even built air
raid and bomb raid shelter in their basements and backyards. All this happened... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Within a month after this, they successfully launched a second satellite. Americans were terrified, thinking that America was lagging behind the
Soviets and that The Soviet Union could launch atomic weapons from space. America was so scared that they rushed and attempted to launch their
own satellite (Vanguard), but it only rose a few feet off the launching pad before exploding. Americans were extremely embarrassed, and the Soviet
Union was starting to look more powerful than the United States. Therefore, We poured millions of federal dollars into the National Aeronautics and
Space Administration (NASA). We launched the explorer into space and started with Project Mercury, the nation's first program to put an astronaut in
space. We also started trying to improve our nation's education system. All of the advancements, all of the money used, it was all caused because of

international communism. The North Korean invasion was a surprise to most officials, they feared this wasn't a small border skirmish but actually the
baby step to a communist campaign to take over the world. This reason in itself was a deciding factory of why Americans thought nonintervention was
not an option.

The Vietnam War: The First Korean War
Following a period of two world wars over the course of 25 years, many Americans thought they had fought their last war when Japan Surrendered in
1945. They were wrong." The idea of America being involved in yet another war was not a decision that came all that easy to President Truman. In
recent events, Truman had seen many things that made him fearful of what could happen if he did not act. It would be later known that for President
Truman "committing troops to Korea was the most difficult decision he made as president."

Truman was also given an armed forces analysis report called NSC 68 on the the Soviet Union, the UN recommended the US to increase its military
spending in order to keep up with the Soviet Union. Lastly, Soviet Union interference in Greece and Turkey made it impossible for Truman not to
intervene with a "war torn" Europe. Truman knew he had to aid European countries in order to ward off the spread of communism. The Truman
Administration was well aware that they were under an enormous amount of pressure not to appear weak when it came to communism. This is why
when the opportunity arose and South Korea was being Invaded, Truman took action and declared that "the US would oppose Communist armed
invasion and war." Truman was determined not to lose another country to communism. On June 27th Truman gave a statement about his concerns with
the spread of communism, In it he made it seem as though the Invasion of South Korea had been part of China and ultimately the Soviet Unions plan to

Korean War: The Causes Of The Korean War
There were certain causes of this war. On June 25, 1950, the Korean War began when the North Korea, supported by the Soviet union and China,
invaded South Korea, which was supported by the United States. In 1950, Syngman Rhee, the president of South Korea at that time, boasted that he
was going to attack North Korea but they were attacked by North Korea instead. In 1949, Kim Il Sung persuaded Stalin and Mao Tse Tung to support
an invasion of South Korea. This triggered for the war to happen. But the underlying reason was because it was just a continuation of the cold war
though the US and the USSR weren't the ones fighting rather the North and South Korea. The US and the USSR were just using it to fight without
having a hot war.
Besides the causes, there were also positive and negative effects after the war ended. The Korean War was able to boost the economy of both Japan and
the US. It also legitimized the United Nations and led to further expansion of military power. The war also reinforced the boundary between the ... Show

First, is the Domino Theory that was made up by Truman. He believed that, if one country fell to Communism, then one would follow, like a line of
dominoes. he was worried that if Korea fell, the next 'domino' would be Japan, which was very important for American trade. Second reason, was to
undermine Communism. And last, by supporting South Korea, the US was able to fight USSR directly without invading Russia.
Another significant event that happened during the Korean War was the Battle of Inchon or The Inchon Invasion. A plan was made by McArthur in
September of 1950 to capture Inchon and cut off North Korea's supply route. by September 27, the North Korean army was pushed out of Seoul and

Inch'on Landing
On september 15, 1950 during the Korean war U.S marine force made a surprise amphibious landing at the strategic port of Inch'on, on the west
coast of Korea. The location had been criticized as too risky, but the United Nations supreme commander insisted on carrying out the bold landing.
Afterward, the American led U.N force was able to break North Korean supply lines and push inland to recapture Seoul, the south Korean capital that
had fallen to the communists in June. the landing at inchon changed the course of the war. The conflict later settled into a long, bloody stalemate that
did not end until July 1953. After Japan was defeated by the allies in world war 2, it lost control of Korea. Korea was divided into two occupation ...

In April 1951, the president, Truman removed, Macarthur from his command after he threatened to bomb China in defiance of truman's war policy.
Truman feared that an escalation of fighting with china would draw the Soviet Union into the Korean war. With Macarthur's dismissal it set off a brief
uproar among the american public but, truman remained committed to keeping the conflict in Korea a limited war. On May 1951 the communist
were pushed back to the 38th parallel and the battle line remained in that vicinity for the rest of the war. July 27, 1953 after 2 years of negotiation,
military leaders from China, North Korea, and the United Nations signed an armistice that ended the fighting and created a new boundary near the
38th parallel that gave South Korea some territory and established a 2.5 mile wide demilitarized zone to serve as a buffer between the two Korea's.
Because South korea and North Korea never signed a peace treaty technically they're still at war today. More than 500,000 American, South Korea, and
other United Nation troops were killed, captured or reported missing during the Korean war. North Korea and chinese military casualties have been

The Korean War Essay
The Korean War
For hundreds of years Korea was dominated by the Chinese empire. After Japan was defeated by the allies in WW II., Korea became occupied by the
Russians in the North and the Americans in the South. Both the U.S. and the Soviets realized that Korea was a strategic country. It was important to
occupy because it lay between China, Japan, and the Soviet Union. North and South Korea were divided by the 38th parallel, it split the country into
two regions. Russia and America became politically involved in Korea, each set up strong governments. The United States wanted Korea to be held
under democratic rule, while the Soviets wanted communist rule. They took these conflicting views to the United Nations (UN), which had just ... Show

The struggle started as a civil war, because Kim Il Sung choose the date for the attack. The date for the attack was badly taken, because the Soviet
Union was boycotting the security Council of the UN at that time (due to the fact, that a communist representative from China was not allowed to enter
the council). The Soviet Union would have been able to veto any military moves against North Korea until the war was over. Unfortunately Kim Il
Sung took the initiative and invaded South Korea, where a growing opposition welcomed the Northern Korean leader as a liberator and as the one,
who re–united the two Koreas. After Acheson (Secretary of State) had heard of the attack, he decided that the United States should put the matter
before the United Nations. He then called President Truman and got his approval. The Security Council of the United Nations decided to give arms
and equipment to the Republic of Korea and it authorized General Macarthur to stabilize the combat situation with his forces. The attack was seen as a
violation of international peace by the Security Council. It was necessary to repel the armed attack and regain international peace and security in the
area. This was the first time that the United Nations used military intervention to maintain peace. The UN had to be interpreted in a completely
different way, because it was thought to be a peacekeeping organ with peaceful means. However this changed dramatically, when the

Truman's Decision To Cross The 38th Parallel
President Rhee, with the United Nations forces on the offensive, wanted to take this opportunity to reunite the two countries into one unified Korea
with himself as the leader. Popular opinion from the U.S. and UN was on his side and the decision to fight on was made. On October 7, 1950, the
UN's mission was changed from containing the North Korean army above the 38th Parallel to pushing them and Communism out of the Korea once
and for all. U.S. President Harry S. Truman was still cautious about the new decision and was worried that the war would spread. He gave General
MacArthur new instructions to destroy the North Korean Army as long as the Soviet and Chinese armies did not enter the war. Truman also required

concerned for their neighbor who had helped them in the war against Japan. They warned the UN forces to stop their advances or they would take

North Korea, disobeying his orders from President Truman. The push north seemed too easy to the field commanders and they feared that they were
heading into an ambush. By late October, the resistance stiffened and the South Korean Army captured their first Chinese

The Invasion Of South Korea During The Vietnam War
When Korea liberated from Japanese control at the end of the Second World War, the United States and the Soviet Union agreed temporarily to divide
Korea at the 38th parallel of latitude north of the equator. This division resulted in the formation of two countries: communist North Korea (supported
by the Soviets) and South Korea (supported by the United States). Five years after the country's partition, the communist leader of North Korea, Kim Il
Sung, decided to attempt to reunify Korea under his control. On June 25, 1950, Kim launched a surprise invasion of South Korea. Believing that the
Soviet Union had backed the invasion, United States President Harry Truman and his advisers followed through on their policy of containment,
refusing to allow communism to spread anywhere in the world. Within two days of the invasion, the United States had rallied the United Nations
Security Council to declare support for South Korea. An American–led UN coalition deployed to South Korea.2^22start superscript, 2, end superscript

Effects Of Containment In The Korean War
Containment in the Korean War
With the help of militaristic and economic aid from Soviet Russia, North Korea had South Korea cornered in the Pusan Perimeter by September of
1950 and a communist victory looked inevitable. However, the United States ditched their policy of isolationism and joined the war effort alongside
other United Nations forces and supported South Korea. Since the North Koreans now had to send their supplies all the way down to their soldiers in
Pusan, General Douglas MacArthur took advantage of this and instead of using ground forces to fight the North Koreans in Pusan, MacArthur used the
United States Navy to flank the supply line in the Battle of Inchon which occurred in September of 1950. This allowed the United States to take back
the capital, Seoul, for South Korea which weakened the North Koreans on top of the blockaded supply line. After Inchon was destroyed, United
States ground forces moved upwards. On September 25th of 1950, the North Koreans took back Seoul so the United States released an air raid on the
North Koreans. By October 7th, the Unites States Forces crossed the pre–war border. The North Koreans were pushed up close to the Chinese border
when China threatened to send troops into Korea. MacArthur had similar ideals as Senator Joseph McCarthy in that they felt that the US was being too
soft on communism and needed to do more about it (Mattingly). So when China threatened to send troops in, MacArthur thought that China was

A Brief Summary And Overview Of The Korean War Essay
The point of this section of the paper is to provide a brief summary and overview of The Korean War. This will set the stage for the rest of the paper
and provide a wealth of background which will be drawn from periodically. This paper will give an overview of the war as a whole, but the earlier
explanations of the causes and U.N. decision to partake provide important details on the justification for Chinese intervention and U.S. restraint.
However, the emphasis will be placed on the U.N./ U.S. coalition decision to cross over the 38th parallel and the subsequent Chinese decision to
intervene in the war.
In the wake of World War II the disestablishment of the European world powers led to a power vacuum. This power vacuum was filled by the two
dominant powers at the time The United States of America and the Soviet Union. The ideologies were Capitalism and Communism and they clashed
repeatedly culminating in large alliances, third world skirmishes, and diplomatic battles within the newly formed United Nations. The United Nations
though often dominated by the Super Powers of the U.S. and U.S.S.R it allowed other countries, mostly the winners of WWII, to have control and Veto
power in arguably the most important section the Security Council. It was within this newly formed bipolar international system, with a bias to WWII
winners, that The Korean War was made possible.

The United States And The Soviet Union Essay
Before the 38th Parallel , there was no North Korea and South Korea – only Korea. The 38th Parallel was initially created to guarantee that Japan
would surrender to the Soviet Union in the north and the south would surrender to the United States, but it later became a barrier between the two
states. (Gupta 1972). The line was proposed by the United States and agreed to by the Soviet Union. Author William Stueck names the 38th parallel as
the first step in the Korean War, writing, "the war originated in 1945 with the division of the peninsula into occupation zones by the Soviet Union and
the United States, and the perpetuation of that division as a result of the two nation's subsequent failure to agree on terms for unification." (Stueck
1995) In September of 1947, the United Nations General Assembly organized a commission to supervise elections with the purpose of setting up a
"national government of Korea". The Soviet Union opposed the presence of the commission in the north and the communists boycotted the election, so
elections were held in the south. The United States backed Syngman Rhee's representation of conservative factions and he was elected. In the north,
Kim Il Sung rose to power and conformed to the Soviet model of politics. After the UN sponsored the elections, the United States and USSR pulled
their forces out of the south and the north. The United States persuaded the UN to establish a special commission, the United Nations Commission on

The Forgotten War: The Korean War
The Korean War or better known as the forgotten war, was fought from 1950 to 1953. Being sandwiched between World War II and the war in
Vietnam it is often overlooked. After World War II, Korea was split into a communist government in the north and a more democratic government in the
south. On June 25, 1950 North Korean soldiers marched into South Korea and captured their capital, Seoul. The U.S. and the United Nations sent
thousands of soldiers to defend South Korea. The Chinese backed North Korea and soon both sides were in the hills at the 38th Parallel. This imaginary
line split the North from the South and the war continued in the hills from 1951 to 1953. Finally, in July of '53 prisoners were exchanged and the
fighting stopped.

Korean War Dbq Summary
B–Summary of Evidence
It was just five years before, that World War II had ended and no one was expecting another war to happen. Korea was on its own with no money and
government or army. The United States and Soviet Union were allies at that time and they agreed to occupy different parts of Korea. The Soviet
Troops occupied the area north of the 38th parallel and the United States occupied the south of the 38th parallel. The Soviet Union tried to establish
communism – where the government maintains a strong control over peoples' lives, as if they were trying to take over the whole world. Soon, their
alliance began to crumble (McGowen 8). By 1948, ВЁrival governmentsВЁ was established and relations became strained (ВЁKorean WarВЁ). The
south was the Republic of Korea modeled after a Western democracy. President Syngman Rhee wanted to unify Korea but President Harry Truman

The Cold War: The Korean War
The Korean War was an episode in the Cold War. It seemed to be a war between South and North Korea, but America and Russia were using it to
fight parted from having a 'hot war'. The Cold War too was a conflict of different convictions and belief– communism versus capitalism – each held
with practically religious doctrine, shaped the premise of a global power struggle with both sides battling for strength, abusing each open door for
development anyplace in the world. I intend to cover the causes of the Korean War, as well as the effects, and the end result? The Korean War began
June 25th, 1950 when North Korea sent about 75,000 troops over the 38th parallel to invade South Korea. Korea had initially been divided into zones of
occupation, but "temporary" soon became permanent. The army surged through the 38th parallel, and was the first military action of the Cold War.
"When South Korea was invaded the United States became their military and financial crutch" says Adam Richards of Study.gov. By July 1950 the
United States was aiding South Korea in the war to halt the international spread of communism. The United States stressed the importance of
containment to prevent the ramification of communism any further. General Douglas MacArthur, who had been overseeing the post–WWII occupation
of Japan, commanded the US forces ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Great War: Was There Really A Winner?
We hear the stories of the war, as history gets retold year after year. Mankind has went through two great wars in its lifetime. What makes everyone
call it a Great War is because it was able to get everyone involved? There was fighting all over the world, this atrocity happened not only once but
twice. After the war there is a declared winner and loser, but over time after the celebrating dies down. One could begin to wonder was there really a
winner. The war was fought to bring peace, but did we really achieve peace at that time. After the horrific war the world was in pieces physically,

There was also a fear that Communism would expand and soon take over. This is commonly known as the red scare. After World War ll there was
still fighting going on in the world. For example there were civil wars being fought in Greece and Turkey against Communism. Great Britain was
worried that their stronghold territory would fall to Communism. So Britain explained their concern to the US. And because Communism is already a
sensitive topic in the US Truman is able to explain the severity of the situation and gets the doctrine passed by stating "Should we fail to aid Greece
and Turkey in this fateful hour, the effect will be far reaching to the west as well as to the east. We must take Immediate and resolute action." The
doctrine stated that the US will help any country with their fight against communism. The Truman Doctrine was issued on March 12th, 1947. Also
taking place during this time was the Marshall Plan. Created by George Marshall, Truman's secretary of state. This plan was to invest money into
Western European to help with reconstruction. "Our policy is directed not against any country or doctrine but against hunger, poverty, desperation, and
chaos." Marshall was given 13.5 billion dollars to ensure success in helping the rebuilding of industry and infrastructure of England. This not only help
the European nation financially, but also declined the communist rate in Europe. The Soviet Union saw the Marshall Plan and the Truman Doctrine as
an act of war. Andrei Vyshinsky stated this by saying "The so
–called Truman Doctrine and the Marshall Plan are particularly glaring example of the
way in which the principle of the United Nations are violated of the way in which the organization is ignored." As seen the US had a long and hard

The Cold War And The Soviet Union
INTRO:
After World War II, there was peace and prosperity in America and many other parts of the world. However, for the Koreans, it was the beginning of a
never ending split. When Japan fell, Korea was suddenly free, and hoped to finally become a unified state. However, the United States and the Soviet
Union had different ideas. The Soviets wanted to have Korea under communist control and the United States wanted to establish a democracy.
Additionally, the United States believed that containment, a foreign policy used to prevent the spread of communism, was extremely important. The
Cold War is a term used to describe the relationship between America and the Soviet Union from 1945 to 1980. Neither side actually ever fought the
other, as the end result would have been catastrophic. However, they did fight for their beliefs by using others who fought for their beliefs on their
behalf.
THESIS STATEMENT:
Between the Cold War, North and South Korea's desire to control their own land, and the threat of nuclear warfare, along with death rates plummeting
and truces only resulting in endless attacks, the Korean War was inevitable.

Korean Demilitarized Zone
The Vietnam and the Korean wars were stomach churning, because of how many people were killed, and how long it took for them to end these
harsh wars. The Korean War started On June 25, 1950. The Korean War began when 75,000 soldiers from the North Korean People's Army (which
were communists) attacked across the 38th parallel. The Korean War was fought between North and South Korea; US forces had come to the help
the South Korean people. Gen. Douglas MacArthur was the leader of the US army, he got control of both the US and the South Korean army
because of how brave and smart he was. They moved to the north of the 38th parallel in an attempt to destroy, and conquer the North Korean side.
The Chinese troops were in support of the North Korean side. The Korean Demilitarized Zone is a strip of land running across the Korean Peninsula
it was established at the end of the Korean War to serve as a an area of land between the two armed forces so they are not allowed to enter into each

A little bit less than five years after World War 2 ended, a crisis broke out on the Korean Peninsula. The Korean Peninsula had been divided after war.
The two halves became separate nations–communist North Korea, and noncommunist, capitalist South

In June 1950, North Korean troops stormed south and seized the South Korean capital of Seoul (sohl). Originally, North Koreas goal was to bring South

Troops were rushed in by the UN. That was commanded by the United States to help South Korea. The UN force, known as the
Eighth Army, had superior air and naval power. Even though the UN had that, the North
Koreans had better weapons on the ground and more soldiers. The North Korean soldiers were more experienced. For seven weeks, KPA forces

By December 1950, the Eighth Army had retreated across the 38th parallel and reassembled in Seoul. The Chinese lined up north of that position,
preparing to attack.
Even though they lost many soldiers, the UN forces numbered almost 300,000 and were still a match for the enemy. (Resource #4)
The UN and the United States had no plans to give up on South Korea. Their plan was to hold a line of Seoul, close to the 38th parallel or as far north

The Battle of the Ch'ongch'on River is identified as the turning point of the Korean War. Due to the disconnect between operations and intelligence,
many cues were missed causing the Chinese Volunteer Army (CVA) and North Korean People's Army (NKPA) to mass a large counteroffensive against
the Eighth United States Army. This counteroffensive created massive casualties and drove the United States Army and the army of the Republic of
Korea (ROK) back to the 38th parallel. Another point of failure for this battle was the lack of concern of the main decision–makers for the Pacific

Regiments from the Chinese forces attacked the units encamped along the Ch'ongch'on River (See Figures 1 and 2). The surprise of these maneuvers
caused mass retreats across the entire line of advance. Subordinate commanders split their units to either bank of the Ch'ongch'on River, worsening the
confusion and limiting the ability to reinforce the ranks internally. Several units abandoned their equipment in place, reducing their ability to build a
defensive perimeter and conduct future counterattacks. While the enemy pressed units on the front lines, other enemy units infiltrated areas behind the
front lines in order to attack units to the south of the front line. The rear attacks, combined with the massively disorganized retreat, prevented rearward
artillery units from effectively defending against Chinese attacks (Mossman, 2009). Despite this, several units initially held against focused enemy
attacks. The attacks continued through the 28th of November, at which point the UN forces switched to completely defensive positions and entered

The Forgotten War: The Symbols Of The Korean War
After the war, when 1.5 million Americans returned home, they found the US filled with peace and prosperity as if a war never took place half a
world away. The memorial was built a year later, and is located on 2.2 acres of land and took 9 years to build. In addition, the memorial cost them 18
million dollars to build. Once they had raised all the money, they started building. The war became known as the Forgotten War because theKorean War
was the last thing the Americans wanted to memorialize. This made the memorial a huge step to remembering and honoring the war and its veterans.
The main part of the memorial is the 38 statues, that stand in Juniper bushes in the center of the memorial. The groundbreaking for the memorial took
place on June 14, 1992, which was conducted by President George W. Bush. The statues are sculpted and designed by Frank Gaylord of Barre,
Vermont. In addition, the statues were cast by Tallix Foundries of Beacon, New York. The statues are made of stainless steel.

  • 2. The Vietnam War: The Korean War The Korean War was a conflict fought during 1950–1953 between Communist–backed North Korea and the U.N.–backed South Korea. The division of Korea dates back to the early 20th century, when Japan and Russia fought each other for control of the Korean Peninsula. After Japan's victory against Russia, they annexed Korea and installed a "puppet leader" to rule the country with the Japanese' influence. By 1926, Japan had complete control of Korea. After World War II, the defeat of the Japanese Empire led to the relinquishing of its colonies. One of those colonies was the nation of Korea. A deal between two of the victorious Allied Lotilla 2 Powers, the United States and the Soviet Union, led to the split of Korea. The country was to be separated ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It was fought during the beginning of the Cold War, arguably one of the most important events of the 20th century. Many people were killed because of this war and it still affects how things came to be in both North Korea and South Korea. The Korean War's effect on history is great, especially for the Korean people. This war led to the creation of the DMZ, the line that separates North and South Korea which is still in use to this day. South Korea is a huge ally to the U.S. ever since the korean war. It is also historically significant because we used Korea as a power play against the USSR. When we took a dive in Vietnam the U.S government was ridiculed because of its failure to deal with the communist country of vietnam. The U.S. had lost. The U.S. needed redemption so they used korea as a power play and heavily backed south korea when the south had almost lost all of their territory. As soon as the U.S intervened the North was pushed back to the 38th parallel and even a little bit passed that. This "win" eventually helped lead to the downfall of the USSR, the main enemy of the U.S. at the time. The country of Korea is also historically significant because we still have solid diplomatic relations with south korea today. And as early as April of 2018 have agreed to end the war between North and South korea officially. They also ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Yalta Conference: The Myth Of Division Of The World The Yalta Conference held in February, 1945 where the representatives of the three winning countries in the World War Two met to discuss Europe 's post–war lay–out is often referred to as the Myth of Division of the World (Buffet & Heuser, 1998, p. 80). During this conference the United States, the United Kingdom and the USSR, represented by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Prime Minister Winston Churchill and Premier Joseph Stalin respectively developed the peace strategies for the future, some of which, however, turned out quite differently. Namely, President Roosevelt suggested a trusteeship in Korea whereby four countries (including China) would help Korea to manage its internal affairs for twenty to thirty years. Stalin accepted this proposal without going any further into the subject (A.A.Gromyko, 1979, pp. 140–142). As a later result, the US–USSR agreement on respective spheres of influence in Korea divided Korea by means of the 38th parallel where the northern part ended up under the Soviet 's control while the Americans controlled the South (Lowe, 1986, p. 19). This demarcation very much shaped the future of Korea actually dividing the world and significantly contributing to the development of the painful conflict between the Southern and the Northern part of one country also known as the Korean War. On June 25, 1950 North Korean troops crossed the 38th parallel capturing Seoul three days later. The South Korean government, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. United States Involvement During The Korean War June 25th, 1950 was the first military action taken during the Cold War. This was the start of the Korean War when close to 750,000 North Korean soldiers crossed the 38th parallel and entered South Korea. North Korea had been Communist and ruled by Ho Chi Minh while South Korea was not communist and were being ruled by Ngo Dinh Diem, who was a very harsh, cruel leader who killed many of his own people. However, the United States supported South Korea because they were against communist and was trying to practice their policy of containment. Americans were scared that the Korean War would begin to spread communism due to the Soviet Union's involvement. • 5. The Function of the Truman Doctrine and Marshall Plan in... The foreign policy of the United States during the Cold War fully supported the growth of democratic nations. The USSR, however, wanted countries to become communist like them. These opposing views led to tension between the two nations. As a result, in 1947, President Truman issued the Truman Doctrine which stated that the United States would supply aid to any country as long as they pledged to be democratic. The Marshall plan was enacted in 1948 and it was similar to the Truman Doctrine except it provided financial aid to these countries. In the late 1940s and early 1950s, the United States used its foreign policy to help countries resist communist influence. The Korean War , although successful in preventing the spread of communism, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Overall, the United States' mission was successful. They, along with United Nations forces, were able to push back the communists to avoid disaster. This was extremely important because the United States knew that Asia was very susceptible to the "domino theory" (meaning that once one nation became communist, they would all become communist) due to the sharing of ideals. The Civil War in Greece and the dispute over the Dardanelles of Turkey allowed for the implementation of the Truman Doctrine and the Marshall Plan. Greece had been struggling against communists who wanted to take over the government. The United States, paranoid about the spreading of communism, sent $300 million in aid through troops and financial means. As a result, Greece was able to resist the communistic attempt to overthrow the democratic government. It was with the financial help of the U.S. that Greece was able to fight off those who threatened their values. This helped Greece but it mostly helped the United States since it was one less country that fell to communism. Additionally, the USSR's leader, Joseph Stalin, wanted partial control of the Dardanelles between the Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea. Immediately, the U.S. government realized that they must send aid to Turkey. Otherwise, the USSR might have turned Turkey into a communist country. As with Greece, the United States sent military aid and financial help of $100 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

With communism looming in Europe the remaining intelligence personnel started focusing their attention back towards their traditional geographic area of Europe. Yet, Korea was becoming a hotbed of activity. The United States was forced to figure out what to do with the country after Japan's withdrawal, in addition to the fighting happening along the Chinese–Korean border. Perceptions are "strongly influenced by" past experiences. Since the military and political leaders during the Korean War were largely the same leaders in place during Pearl Harbor and WWII, the perception they had fell in line with their past experiences. The United States had already formulated their opinion about the Soviet Union and its control over the communist countries. Even though new information presented itself before the beginning of the war and through the invasion of China, the mindset of the military leaders was already established, and they were resistant to change. The United Nations Security Council Essay "War can be of two kinds, in the sense that either the objective is to overthrow the enemy–to render him politically helpless or militarily impotent, thus forcing him to sign whatever peace we please; or merely to occupy some of his frontier districts so that we can annex them or use them for bargaining at the peace negotiations." Introduction Prior to 1950 the small country of Korea had been split laterally across the 38th Parallel, the Soviets supporting the north and the United States supporting the south. The country was patchy in culture, the north with a communist center under the Democratic People's Republic (DPRK), and the south being republican under the Republic of Korea (ROK). Both governments sought to unify the country under one leadership. In the summer of 1950 the north sent an attack below the 38th Parallel, advancing towards Seoul the capital of South Korea. The United Nations Security Council requested military support in Korea. Without hesitation President Harry Truman sent American troops to South Korea. The war persisted over three years and cost the lives of many American troops. The restrictions that would prevent the United States from attaining complete and swift success in Korea were the changes amid military and political objectives, misguided leadership, forgoing the use of nuclear weapons, independent foreign actors, and prisoners of war at war termination. South Korea's defence ministry said these threats are 'unacceptable' and threaten peace. The statement came a day after the North staged a large military rally through the streets of Pyongyang. The White House warned North Korea that following Friday that military confrontation would lead to further isolation. The two Koreas have technically been at war for more than half a century, yet they have never signed a formal peace deal after the Korean war in the 1950s. Almost 40,000 Americans died in action in Korea, and more than 100,000 were wounded. The armistice was only a ceasefire agreement, not a formal peace treaty ending the war. A final peace treaty was supposed to be on the agenda at the Geneva Conference of 1954, but by the time that conference began, the French colonial war in Indochina took precedence. Ultimately, the United States and the ROK signed a mutual defense treaty, and U.S. troops became a part of the DMZ patrols on a semi–permanent basis. The Korean War had long–lasting consequences for the entire region. Though it failed to unify the country, the United States achieved its larger goals, including preserving and promoting NATO interests and defending Japan. The war also resulted in a divided Korea and complicated any possibility for accommodation between the United States and China. The Korean War served to encourage the U.S. Cold War policies of containment and militarization, setting the stage for the further enlargement of the U.S. defense perimeter in Asia. • 12. The Cold War The Cold War was the name given to the political economic, military and ideological contention that occurred between the United States and its allies and the Soviet Union and their allies after World War II. The two forces never directly engaged in military activity in light of the fact that both had atomic weapons that if utilized, might have had crushing outcomes for both sides. Instead, proxy wars were battled. A proxy war results when contradicting forces utilize outsiders as substitutes for battling each one other and is ordinarily launched by a power that does not itself partake. The Korean and Vietnam wars are two examples of proxy wars on the grounds that the U.S. and the Soviet Union did not directly engage one another however, Soviet endeavors to spread and bring together both Korea and Vietnam under communist rule provoked mediation either by theUnited States and/or by their allies. These two occasions were simply a few of the impacts of the Cold War in Asia. This paper will examine each war individually and in more detail and endeavor to persuade that the Korean and Vietnam Wars were the immediate aftereffects of Soviet endeavors to expand communist influence in Asia and the United States and their allies' approach of forestalling and holding such endeavors. Effects Of Containment In The Korean War Containment in the Korean War With the help of militaristic and economic aid from Soviet Russia, North Korea had South Korea cornered in the Pusan Perimeter by September of 1950 and a communist victory looked inevitable. However, the United States ditched their policy of isolationism and joined the war effort alongside other United Nations forces and supported South Korea. Since the North Koreans now had to send their supplies all the way down to their soldiers in Pusan, General Douglas MacArthur took advantage of this and instead of using ground forces to fight the North Koreans in Pusan, MacArthur used the United States Navy to flank the supply line in the Battle of Inchon which occurred in September of 1950. This allowed the United States to take back the capital, Seoul, for South Korea which weakened the North Koreans on top of the blockaded supply line. After Inchon was destroyed, United States ground forces moved upwards. On September 25th of 1950, the North Koreans took back Seoul so the United States released an air raid on the North Koreans. This will set the stage for the rest of the paper and provide a wealth of background which will be drawn from periodically. This paper will give an overview of the war as a whole, but the earlier explanations of the causes and U.N. decision to partake provide important details on the justification for Chinese intervention and U.S. restraint. However, the emphasis will be placed on the U.N./ U.S. coalition decision to cross over the 38th parallel and the subsequent Chinese decision to intervene in the war. In the wake of World War II the disestablishment of the European world powers led to a power vacuum. This power vacuum was filled by the two dominant powers at the time The United States of America and the Soviet Union. The ideologies were Capitalism and Communism and they clashed repeatedly culminating in large alliances, third world skirmishes, and diplomatic battles within the newly formed United Nations. • 31. The United States And The Soviet Union Essay Before the 38th Parallel , there was no North Korea and South Korea – only Korea. The 38th Parallel was initially created to guarantee that Japan would surrender to the Soviet Union in the north and the south would surrender to the United States, but it later became a barrier between the two states. (Gupta 1972). The line was proposed by the United States and agreed to by the Soviet Union. Author William Stueck names the 38th parallel as the first step in the Korean War, writing, "the war originated in 1945 with the division of the peninsula into occupation zones by the Soviet Union and the United States, and the perpetuation of that division as a result of the two nation's subsequent failure to agree on terms for unification." (Stueck 1995) In September of 1947, the United Nations General Assembly organized a commission to supervise elections with the purpose of setting up a "national government of Korea". The Soviet Union opposed the presence of the commission in the north and the communists boycotted the election, so elections were held in the south. The United States backed Syngman Rhee's representation of conservative factions and he was elected. In the north, Kim Il Sung rose to power and conformed to the Soviet model of politics. The Cold War too was a conflict of different convictions and belief– communism versus capitalism – each held with practically religious doctrine, shaped the premise of a global power struggle with both sides battling for strength, abusing each open door for development anyplace in the world. I intend to cover the causes of the Korean War, as well as the effects, and the end result? The Korean War began June 25th, 1950 when North Korea sent about 75,000 troops over the 38th parallel to invade South Korea. Korea had initially been divided into zones of occupation, but "temporary" soon became permanent. The army surged through the 38th parallel, and was the first military action of the Cold War. "When South Korea was invaded the United States became their military and financial crutch" says Adam Richards of Study.gov. By July 1950 the United States was aiding South Korea in the war to halt the international spread of communism. The United States stressed the importance of containment to prevent the ramification of communism any further. General Douglas MacArthur, who had been overseeing the post–WWII occupation of Japan, commanded the US forces ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When the UN and US troops had managed to push the Democratic People's Republic of Korea's troops up to the border between Manchuria and North Korea, a desperate Kim Il Sung turned to the Chinese. • 35. Great War: Was There Really A Winner? We hear the stories of the war, as history gets retold year after year. Mankind has went through two great wars in its lifetime. What makes everyone call it a Great War is because it was able to get everyone involved? There was fighting all over the world, this atrocity happened not only once but twice. After the war there is a declared winner and loser, but over time after the celebrating dies down. One could begin to wonder was there really a winner. The war was fought to bring peace, but did we really achieve peace at that time. After the horrific war the world was in pieces physically, emotionally, and most important economically. Although everyone was bad off there were two countries that was stable enough to keep their head above water.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There was also a fear that Communism would expand and soon take over. This is commonly known as the red scare. After World War ll there was still fighting going on in the world. For example there were civil wars being fought in Greece and Turkey against Communism. Great Britain was worried that their stronghold territory would fall to Communism. So Britain explained their concern to the US. And because Communism is already a sensitive topic in the US Truman is able to explain the severity of the situation and gets the doctrine passed by stating "Should we fail to aid Greece and Turkey in this fateful hour, the effect will be far reaching to the west as well as to the east. We must take Immediate and resolute action." The doctrine stated that the US will help any country with their fight against communism. The Truman Doctrine was issued on March 12th, 1947. Also taking place during this time was the Marshall Plan. Created by George Marshall, Truman's secretary of state. This plan was to invest money into Western European to help with reconstruction. "Our policy is directed not against any country or doctrine but against hunger, poverty, desperation, and chaos." Marshall was given 13.5 billion dollars to ensure success in helping the rebuilding of industry and infrastructure of England. This not only help the European nation financially, but also declined the communist rate in Europe. The Soviet Union saw the Marshall Plan and the Truman Doctrine as an act of war. Andrei Vyshinsky stated this by saying "The so –called Truman Doctrine and the Marshall Plan are particularly glaring example of the way in which the principle of the United Nations are violated of the way in which the organization is ignored." As seen the US had a long and hard fight against Communism going to any length to assure that Communism remained ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. The Cold War And The Soviet Union INTRO: After World War II, there was peace and prosperity in America and many other parts of the world. However, for the Koreans, it was the beginning of a never ending split. When Japan fell, Korea was suddenly free, and hoped to finally become a unified state. However, the United States and the Soviet Union had different ideas. The Soviets wanted to have Korea under communist control and the United States wanted to establish a democracy. Additionally, the United States believed that containment, a foreign policy used to prevent the spread of communism, was extremely important. The Cold War is a term used to describe the relationship between America and the Soviet Union from 1945 to 1980. Neither side actually ever fought the other, as the end result would have been catastrophic. However, they did fight for their beliefs by using others who fought for their beliefs on their behalf. THESIS STATEMENT: Between the Cold War, North and South Korea's desire to control their own land, and the threat of nuclear warfare, along with death rates plummeting and truces only resulting in endless attacks, the Korean War was inevitable. BODY: ADD TRANSITION The Korean War was the first battle of the Cold War, and first major proxy war fought between the United States and a Soviet communist supported enemy. A proxy war occurs when one or more opposing powers instigates a war and then uses third parties to fight on their behalf. Right between Japan to the east, Russia to the northeast, ... • 37. Korean Demilitarized Zone The Vietnam and the Korean wars were stomach churning, because of how many people were killed, and how long it took for them to end these harsh wars. The Korean War started On June 25, 1950. The Korean War began when 75,000 soldiers from the North Korean People's Army (which were communists) attacked across the 38th parallel. The Korean War was fought between North and South Korea; US forces had come to the help the South Korean people. Gen. Douglas MacArthur was the leader of the US army, he got control of both the US and the South Korean army because of how brave and smart he was. They moved to the north of the 38th parallel in an attempt to destroy, and conquer the North Korean side. The Chinese troops were in support of the North Korean side. The Korean Demilitarized Zone is a strip of land running across the Korean Peninsula it was established at the end of the Korean War to serve as a an area of land between the two armed forces so they are not allowed to enter into each other's properties, making it less likely that they will attack each other between North and South Korea. • 38. The Korean Peninsula A little bit less than five years after World War 2 ended, a crisis broke out on the Korean Peninsula. The Korean Peninsula had been divided after war. The two halves became separate nations–communist North Korea, and noncommunist, capitalist South Korea. (Resource #1) It was divided at latitude 38 degrees north, also known as the 38th parallel. (Resource #2) In June 1950, North Korean troops stormed south and seized the South Korean capital of Seoul (sohl). Originally, North Koreas goal was to bring South Korea under communism by force. They no longer wanted to be separate. North Korea wanted to be united with South Korea. (Resource #1) At one, point Korea was an ancient, independent country. The UN force, known as the Eighth Army, had superior air and naval power. Even though the UN had that, the North Koreans had better weapons on the ground and more soldiers. The North Korean soldiers were more experienced. For seven weeks, KPA forces pushed the Republic of Korea (ROK) Army and UN forces toward the coast. (Resource #3) By December 1950, the Eighth Army had retreated across the 38th parallel and reassembled in Seoul. The Chinese lined up north of that position, preparing to attack. Even though they lost many soldiers, the UN forces numbered almost 300,000 and were still a match for the enemy. (Resource #4) The UN and the United States had no plans to give up on South Korea. Their plan was to hold a line of Seoul, close to the 38th parallel or as far north as possible. They would do this until the Chinese and North Korea were willing to negotiate a peace agreement. For South Korea, the UN, and the United States, it seemed terrifying to hold a line against the seemingly numberless Chinese. The Chinese struck the UN line ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Ch Ongch Turning Point The Battle of the Ch'ongch'on River is identified as the turning point of the Korean War. Due to the disconnect between operations and intelligence, many cues were missed causing the Chinese Volunteer Army (CVA) and North Korean People's Army (NKPA) to mass a large counteroffensive against the Eighth United States Army. This counteroffensive created massive casualties and drove the United States Army and the army of the Republic of Korea (ROK) back to the 38th parallel. Another point of failure for this battle was the lack of concern of the main decision–makers for the Pacific Theater of Operations in Chinese military incursions into what is now North Korea. While many factors contributed to the defeats of the United Nations' forces, if more resources were allocated ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Regiments from the Chinese forces attacked the units encamped along the Ch'ongch'on River (See Figures 1 and 2). The surprise of these maneuvers caused mass retreats across the entire line of advance. Subordinate commanders split their units to either bank of the Ch'ongch'on River, worsening the confusion and limiting the ability to reinforce the ranks internally. Several units abandoned their equipment in place, reducing their ability to build a defensive perimeter and conduct future counterattacks. While the enemy pressed units on the front lines, other enemy units infiltrated areas behind the front lines in order to attack units to the south of the front line. The rear attacks, combined with the massively disorganized retreat, prevented rearward artillery units from effectively defending against Chinese attacks (Mossman, 2009). Despite this, several units initially held against focused enemy attacks. The attacks continued through the 28th of November, at which point the UN forces switched to completely defensive positions and entered into the next series of battles in the Korean ... The Forgotten War: The Symbols Of The Korean War After the war, when 1.5 million Americans returned home, they found the US filled with peace and prosperity as if a war never took place half a world away. The memorial was built a year later, and is located on 2.2 acres of land and took 9 years to build. In addition, the memorial cost them 18 million dollars to build. Once they had raised all the money, they started building. The war became known as the Forgotten War because theKorean War was the last thing the Americans wanted to memorialize. This made the memorial a huge step to remembering and honoring the war and its veterans. The main part of the memorial is the 38 statues, that stand in Juniper bushes in the center of the memorial.
