Abraham Lincoln Boglum Research Paper
future" (Fite, Gilbert 130). Borglum was not going to change the head, but carve the shoulders so as
to make it appear that the head was turned.
Borglum directs work on the Lincoln face using various stages of carving. Vertical drill marks in the
upper left corner, and horizontal drill marks in and around the eye and on the temple, and the
finished quality of the stone on the outer rim of the nose, produced by "bumping". Lincoln's nose is
20 feet long, his eyes are 11 feet wide with protruding pupils making the eyes appear alive, and his
mouth is 18 feet wide. Lincoln's face was the most difficult to complete due to his beard. In
September 17, 1937, Abraham Lincoln's head was dedicated.
Roosevelt's face was the last one to complete. Not finding suitable rock, the sculptors cut farther
back into the mountain, causing concerns about how far they were cutting. His nose is 20 feet long,
his eyes are 11 feet wide shaped with eye glasses, and his mouth is 18 feet wide. While Roosevelt's
head was being constructed, accommodations for tourists were being built, including plumbing,
lighting, and a visitor center. Theodore Roosevelt's head was dedicated on July 2, 1939. ... Show

An Analysis of the Opening Sequence of Stanley Kubrick's...
An analysis of the opening sequence of Stanley Kubrick's 'Eyes Wide Shut' focusing on the use of
generic conventions
We frequently consider films in terms of their genre, a French word meaning 'kind' or 'sort'. It is a
very complex term, not only used in film but also in other creative areas such as music, art, and
literature. However, it is often considered through various conventions including iconography,
similar themes and their stylistic features, as Bordwell and Thompson (2006:357) suggest, ' style...is
the formal system of the film that organizes techniques' such as lighting, props and setting. This
repetition of common elements across a series of films allows us as the viewer to identify genre. For
example, if a film was to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Following this the camera cuts back to Dr Harford who appears to be wearing a smart black suit,
which could signify various things, such as an upper class, wealthy figure which could also lead to
possible narrative conclusions. The mise–en–scene in this long shot of Dr Bill Harford includes red
curtains, which could symbolize, love or even danger and blood. However, the dominant colour at
the beginning of the shot is cool blue. There is a large bookshelf included within the frame of the
shot, which could signify that the character is knowledgeable, intelligent and is also a prop
commonly know in detective films, linking to the mystery genre. The camera then tracks backwards
as the male figure walks towards the camera into another soft–lit room, once again including red
coloured curtains, which seems to already be a reoccurring prop. This shot is also a long take, with
no edits, which is a popular technique used in drama's. However as Ciment, Adair and Bononno
suggest (2001:226) 'Kubrick's frequent use of dolly backs is one of the major recurring stylistic
features in Eyes Wide Shut and expresses the ambiguity at the heart of the film: intoxication, loss of
consciousness, fainting, dreams.'
Kubrick has already given various clues through the use of generic conventions by the use of stars,
props, lighting and sound. However, as Williams (2005:397) suggests, 'Kubrick has long played
with genre, emulating and exemplifying the pinnacles of trash genres

A Worn Path Narrative
The rusty, metal gate is broken and falling apart. I open the gate to let myself in as the wind blows
by gently. The earthy and dead smells, like a cemetery are very unpleasant for me, but I can't give
up now. I need to know what happened to my family before they died. I know it wasn't a suicide like
the police said. I lost my family when I was nine; my dad, my mom and both of my grandparents.
I've stayed at my aunt's house ever since. And there's never a day that I don't miss them. As I slowly
walk toward the house, I can tell how humid the air is, by my sticky skin is rubbing against each
other. I'm blinded by the fog around the house as I step closer and closer. The place is silent, so
silent that I could hear my own heart beating; fast

The Characters Of Cujo Cujo
Based on the descriptions and events in this excerpt. I can infer that the title character, Cujo, has
turned rabid and he is out to look for blood. I can also infer that his eyes are red and watery with
thick substance leaking from it. Finally, I can infer that he has already killed his owner because he
had mud and blood all over him. This was all stated in paragraphs 10 and 11, "The dog's eyes settled
on hers. They were red and rheumy. They were leaking some viscous substance. The dog seemed to
be weeping gummy tears. His tawny coat was caked and matted with mud and– Blood. is that..." All
of this evidence told me that Cujo is rabid and has already killed his owner.
Donna's actions and thoughts reveal that her character is very clumsy and when she gets frightened
she is unable to think and is unaware of what she is doing. In paragraph 13 it states, "She couldn't
seem to move. No breath...There was no contact between her brain and her legs...Her hands were
stupid blocks of flesh south of her wrists with no feeling in them. Her urine went. She was unaware
of it save for some vague sensation of distant warmth." This tells me that when Donna saw the dog,
Cujo, she didn't know what to do and just stood there. Also, in paragraph 16 it states, "She turned in
a great shambling drunk's pivot, slamming her lower leg against the Pinto's fender and sending a
steely bolt of pain up to her hip...She hit her crazybone and uttered a thin shriek of pain." Donna's
actions tell me that she

Personal Narrative: No Place In High School
As soon as I closed my eyes, I instantly felt different. I was no longer wide awake, mind raring to
learn and to go, go go. Silence automatically engulfed me allowing me to sink into my mind. My
eyes instantly when shut felt heavy, and slightly burned as if through I had to keep my eyes open for
sixty seconds, rather than closed. No smells hit me as the classroom was scent free , and I was
sitting next to girl who probably more then likely showered everyday. So she gave off no scent. My
ears quickly caught the steady hum of the overhead lights. Not focusing to deeply as my ears
inadvertently bounced around looking in the silence for something else to hear. I could hear people
walking through the halls, a fellow classmate entering the room.

The Cure: A Short Story
The cure The storm rumbled as we walked into the professor's lab. Everything in the lab smelled of
death. We knew that when we entered the lab that we would only have one hour to find the cure to
the plague before we would die. As we looked around I figured out that were in some kind of puzzle
room. I had figured out their names. There was one boy with frizzy, dark brown hair and was
wearing a t–shirt and blue jeans. His name was Jake. The other boy had short, light brown hair and
was wearing plague doctor clothes. His name was Josh. The oldest girl was sam and she had long,
blond hair and was wearing a knee–high blue dress. The two youngest girls were sisters and they
both had long black hair. Ploama and Molly. After about half an hour later ... Show more content on

we are all going to die!" Paloma yelled as she scrolled her younger sister. Sam had just woken up as
she heard what Ploama had said and passed out again. "Can you two shut up for a minute. I am
trying to think," I had to scream for them to hear me." I feel sick, but not like I am going to die type
of sick. Also, Jake, wake up the other two," I tasked. "Ploama stop yelling at your sister. Molly clean
up this mess. When Sam comes to, please do tell me. That is all". And with that, I left the room. As I
stood on the balcony and cried, I heard someone walk up behind me. "It's cold out here" Josh
retorted. I spun around and flew into his arms. Gently he hugged back. Without noticing, I had
started crying. I was so glad he was not dead. He was a birother to me As we walked backed into the

The Boy 's Head Snapped
"Vincent?" He asked, catching the boy's attention.
The boy's head snapped to look at the man. The kidnapper had to admit, the boy looked hilarious.
His already round cheeked full of food, some of which was hanging out of his mouth. Vince was
mid scoop of his meal and his eyes were wide. The entire look was a perfect mixture of a deer in
headlights and a chipmunk stuffing their face. McCreeps didn't hold back a chuckle," Would you
like me to grab you something to drink, my boy?"
Hurriedly, the boy nodded and with a mouth full of food," Hesh pleshe!"
The smile never left the man's face as he got up from his seat to grab some juice for the little boy.
Vince had a perfect view of the fridge, and watched as the man got up. He slowly chewed on his
food, mostly because there was just so much in his mouth he couldn't. Finally he was able to
swallow right as the man opened the fridge. Almost instantly the boy wanted to upchuck his
breakfast. A head, with eyes cut out and hair shaved off, sat perched on the fridge's top counter. With
or without eyes, it didn't matter. That head was staring at him.
McCreeps turned back around, juice carton in hand. Upon seeing the boy's terrified face, he turned
back to see what he was staring at," Oh this? Like I said, my boy, the woman certainly did provide a
lot for Adande. Sure, it just made it harder to cook her up, but on the bright side there are tons of
leftovers!"

Eyes Wide Shut Analysis
Stanley Kubrick, known for his critically acclaimed films, sent the world into a frenzy with the film
he released right before his death. His last movie, Eyes Wide Shut, based on Traumnovelle (Dream
Story), is a social commentary on the consumerist society we live in today and its relationship to the
class system in place. It is important to note that the backdrop of the film is Christmastime in New
York City. People who are familiar with Kubrick's films are aware that everything the camera passes
is relevant to his overall message. Notorious for his perfectionism, it was not surprising to find he
had, "sent a designer to New York to measure the exact width of the streets and the distance between
newspaper vending machines," in order to reconstruct Greenwich Village in London, where they
were filming (Nicholson 2017). The film took 15 months to complete, earning Kubrick the Guinness
world record for longest continual film shoot. This time frame is more believable after learning he
once made Tom Cruise shoot 95 takes of him walking through a door, Cruise even developed an
ulcer working under Kubrick. However, all the extreme measures paid off. Even the background
actors play an important role in the film. People are mulling around the streets of Greenwich Village
running errands, living their lives, and enjoying the short lived holiday ambience. In almost every
one of the shots in the film, there is a Christmas tree lit with rainbow lights affecting the clarity of
the air. In

Analysis Of Stanley Kubrick 's The And The Post...
Edited part 2
"The use of colour to express complexity of mind and to affirmatively counterpoint brutality also
distinguishes the post–Strangelove films. As Sergei Eisenstein (an early theoretical influence on
Kubrick) predicted, colour in serious cinema would become integral to meaning. But unlike some of
Eisenstein's ideological descendants, Kubrick did not consider beauty to be a varnish for social
injustice." (rice, pg2)
Stanley Kubrick began making films in the 1950s; his early films were in black and white since, at
the time, color film stock was very expensive and only used on big budget films with big stars. His
first technicolor feature "Sparticus" (1960) was extensively storyboarded and was even put through
the same rigorous color tests that Walt Disney used for all his feature films since Kubrick was
obsessive about color. Due to struggles with actor Kirk Douglas, Kubrick refused to work with star
actors which resulted in him not working in color for nearly eight years.
Black and White: The duality of Man.
In the context of Kubrick's films, the relationship between black and white takes on its own
independent significance as an element of colour design. Kubrick uses black and white as if the
were on either end of the spectrum, polar opposites but made up of the same spectrum. This duality
of colour echoes the duality of man in Full Metal Jacket and 2001 and on a less obvious way his
other films.
Kubrick returned to color film stock for his masterpiece

Christina looked down at the dead body in front of her.
The dead man's face was contorted and twisted with horror. His mouth was wide open and formed a

obvious that he had been struggling before he died. The cause of his death was still unclear.
They were in the living room of the massive mansion that belonged to the dead man. Christina read

his name was Frank Williams. He had been like this when the ambulance and Christina had come,

The Ouija Board
The country in Maine is a bluster, a sharp knife, a muddy puddle, a breeze, a frozen lake, a smell in
the air, a loud noise. Maine is fields of grass and deer and trees and cold, an endless barren
snowscape with howling winds and hard hail, an unstoppable force relentlessly pounding its fists
into the earth and trees, suspending all life, and letting the universe take a deep breath. The
countryside, however, can also be a mild, gentle fun place for boys and girls to play in the long
grass and climb the trees in their yards. One of those boys, was named Al and he loved getting
outside and having an adventure.

"Oh, just a usual walk", he said nervously, not wanting his mother to fear for him.
"Well, clean up and get ready for bed" She replied, washing vegetables in the basin and lighting a
fire under the soup.
After hearing that scream come from the house on the hill, Al was too scared to venture far for quite
a while. He would however, often pear into the distance and try to see the house, perched atop that
hill. All this was when Al was only 8 years old. Now, being 13 and in seventh grade, he got brave

This time, it was different. The house still didn't have any smoke from the chimney, but there
weren't any cars in the driveway or anything indicating that people were living there. He mustered
the courage to go nearer, and observe it more. When Al was just outside the garage, he saw the face
of a girl, about his age, watching him from an upstairs window. She appeared about his age, though
it was hard to tell as she disappeared almost immediately. Al wondered what he should do, and
decided to knock on the door. He never had a lot of friends, and thought it would be interesting to

Anna's Cruelty: A Fictional Narrative

not look aged, the pages were not weathered. It was still old–fashioned but age did not seem to have

rigorous construction. It would be so tight over its victim's body! The arms held completely
immobile; "How?" She put the jacket down and picked up the shackles. They were bright, lustrously

Analysis Of Benjamin Franklin's 'Keep Your Eyes Wide Open...
"Keep your eyes wide open before marriage, half shut afterwards." – Benjamin Franklin. The
underlying metaphorical meaning of what Benjamin Franklin is saying is that before marriage one
must keep their eyes open. What he is stating is that if you don't keep your eyes wide open you
could be missing out on certain opportunity's that could be better than what you have now. Or in
other words don't limit yourself, nor be frightened to try new things. But in the end, make sure you
are with someone who makes you happy. The other part of this quote is quite interesting. The part
where Benjamin Franklin states "keep your eyes half shut afterwards" has multiple meanings and
there could be a few ways one could examine what he is trying to portray. ... Show more content on

Some of them may not be very important, but a lot of the time the subconscious is trying to point the
individual to the real problem. While in a committed relationship premarital counseling can help
resolve many of the common issues that individuals face. The counselor can help point out the
issues that are vital and find a practical strategy on how to deal with it.
The second part of Franklins advice is equally crucial. Marriage is all about being forgiving,
overlooking, and staying positive. The first is very critical when it comes to being in a marriage.
Being forgiving is pretty much the same as being tolerant to towards one another. The dictionary
definition of being tolerant from Oxford Dictionaries says that being tolerant is "showing
willingness to allow opinions or a certain behavior that one does not necessarily agree with." This
definition explains why a lot of individuals who are married experience frustration towards their
spouse. In many cases the person you are involved with will have a certain behavior or interest that
the individuals you associate with won't always agree with, but just because they have those certain
behaviors or interests that others can't seem to grasp doesn't mean that it is going to ruin or even be
the slightest bit harmful towards your marriage. A good example of this is say you are married to a
man who has a habit of going to his favorite bar after work to have a drink. He

Today is the first day of may long weekend and I couldn't be more excited. It's our last year of

We live in Calgary so the drive isn't long at all, I'd say we take the mountains for granted too much.
We passed the towering mountains as we entered into the outskirts of Banff, along with the train of
cars in front of us. May long weekends in Banff are always packed with tourists or people looking

The Culture Of Shut Up By Jon Lovett Essay
Within a society that is reliant on the internet as a means of connectedness to one another, there will
be drawbacks. The fate of this society is how people grasp this concept of unlimited compatibility
and get around the drawbacks. Within the internet and all the ideas and saying that are flooded into
the streams of computer–human interactions there will always be room for backlash and critique. In
the article "The Culture of Shut Up" Jon Lovett produces his ideas on how society needs to get a
grip on the endless amount of connectedness that spawns from the internet and how people must
deal with the fact of how unreserved it is. When someone says something, a person doesn't agree
with, Lovett states that you cannot just tell them to "shut up" because they won't shut up, they don't
have to and they never will. "You don't beat someone's idea by beating the thinker. You beat their
idea with an idea. The fact of the matter is that society must use the connectedness offered by the
modern age of technology to their advantage rather than be set off track by some drawbacks that
come with it. Jon Lovett uses the internet and the effect on society as his topic in "The Culture of
Shut Up." Lovett exemplifies the routine of how people must concern themselves with something
else rather than get tied into a dead–end controversy with something someone said that they didn't
happen to agree with. A basepoint to start with this series is social media. The effect social media

Handmaid's List: A Narrative Fiction
For the third time, Elias was now looking at the shopping list given to him by his wife. The yellow

causing the hairs on his legs to stiffen. Looking through the veil of smoke he saw three rows with

Visual Pleasure And Narrative Cinema
In Laura Mulvey's essay Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema, she discusses the psychoanalysis of
scopophilic and voyeuristic tendencies. Scopophilia is defined as the pleasure in looking and being
looked at, which, in the case of this essay can be broken that down into the pleasure of looking as
the active dominant male, and the pleasure in being looked at as the passive female. I plan to
analyze Mulvey's ideas of patriarchy in film, specifically the "male gaze" and how these ideas are
portrayed through the film of Eyes Wide Shut.
The male protagonist in film is often caught by the viewer, in the pleasuring act of looking at
females. Through film, Mulvey argues that the male is seen as the dominant figure, imposing a
"male gaze" on his female victim. This phenomenon is perpetuated due to the language and
instruction of the patriarchal order: how someone must act due to society's teachings. Mulvey argues
that this pleasure may be contradicted by the female arousal of castration anxiety among the male
protagonist, a theory exemplified by the plot of Eyes Wide Shut.
In the film Eyes Wide Shut –whose name derives from an extrapolation of the secret society and
their voyeuristic preferences that act as the focus of the film– Bill tries to escape the anxiety of
metaphoric castration, imposed on him by the knowledge of his wives sexual fantasies for other
men. His solution involves a voyeuristic secret society where he can derive a sense of, "pleasure in
using another person

Voyeurism In Rear Window
Hitchcock began his career in the early 1920s as a silent filmmaker, and rose to fame after his first
successful silent thriller, The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog (1927). As sound technology
progressed and became more accessible to filmmakers and movie theaters, Hitchcock began to work
in sound. However, for the remainder of his career, Hitchcock was profoundly influenced by what
he called 'pure cinema'. This idea represents the film medium and its affective and expressive
capabilities, unconstrained by the narratives and dialogue used to drive the storytelling process in
literature and more modern 'talkies'. Hitchcock's early mastery of the silent film medium made him
acutely aware of space, composition, blocking, and camera ... Show more content on

Next, the camera pulls back inside the window and the audience is introduced with medium close–
up shot to their sleeping protagonist, whose face is dripping with sweat. The camera then pans
towards his broken leg, encased in a white cast with the words 'Here lie the broken bones of L.B.
Jefferies'.
Despite the lack of narration or dialogue, this scene is a highly effective introduction to the film's
protagonist and the setting in which the most of the action will take place. This highly
choreographed long take discloses an impressive volume of narrative information using only visual
cues; the audience is now conscious of their protagonist's name, his broken leg, the vibrant
neighborhood where he lives, and even the summer heat that envelops the scene. The expositional
scene is an excellent example of Hitchcock's 'pure cinema' because it immediately deepens the
audience's participation in the film and gives the film a tangible quality, as if the audience were
physically standing in Jefferies' apartment and surveying the setting.
Like Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick also began his career working outside the 'talkie' medium. He was
a talented photographer at a young age, landing a job shooting for a magazine at only seventeen.
Through his early experience with photography, Kubrick developed his infamous perfectionism and
"the conscious wish to stage his shots, to deliberately shape reality" through his

Onida Alternate Ending
I pulled the furs up around Onida as she nursed our baby. My arm was around Her shoulders
keeping her warm, not that she needed it. When the baby cried for his nightly feeding, I had gotten

for him to finish. Onida gave me a nudge. "Wake up. He's asleep like his father." I got up and
checked the fire. She placed our baby boy back in his basket. She returned to our bed and laid down
on the edge. "I know what you are thinking." The glow of the fire lit up the room as I looked into

Mika's eyes opened wide. "I like picking berries. Can I go too?" My three–year old daughter was

Gender Roles In The Naked And The Dead
In American culture sex and nudity are considered things that are meant to be private. They are
secrets hidden behind closed doors, but they have always had an effect on how we see gender. Eyes
Wide Shut's stark contrast to the phrase "eyes wide open" is a play on words of the naivety of
processing information and only viewing things on the surface; specifically female appearances. In
David Edelstein's The Naked and the Dead, he rips apart Stanley Kubrick's film, Eyes Wide Shut for
multiple reasons. Most notable are his critiques towards the alien interactions between different
genders and his belief that the film's only purpose is to objectify women, but Edelstein is wrong
about his analysis of this film. Stanley Kubrick's goal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Epoch Of Helen
Helen of Troy is regarded as the most beautiful woman in the world. She is desired by every man,
and she essentially started The Trojan War, which lasted 10 years. Helen is a central figure in
various Greek mythological stories for her beauty as well as for her decisions and actions. Despite
these main similarities, in various stories Helen is depicted totally differently. The way in which
Helen is portrayed is different from epoch to epoch, and from culture to culture. The three main
epochs that contain stories of Helen are the ancient Greek era, the medieval Christian era, and the
contemporary era. The two main Greek stories including Helen are Homer's Iliad and Odyssey. The
main medieval Christian story including Helen is Dante's Inferno. ... Show more content on

Every man desired her, yet she was stuck with an ugly King Menelaus, the ruler of the Spartans.
Helen, however, did know her sheer beauty and because of this she was very frivolous, and that led
to her being unfaithful to Menelaus, and she ran off with Paris, son of Priam, the ruler of Troy. Troy
was a rival city–state of the Spartans, and thus a war begun over Helen. Homer describes Helen's
beauty to that of a goddess. He writes, "Helen came out of her scented chamber, a moving grace like
Artemis, straight as a shaft of gold" (The Odyssey, Book IV). This shows how elegant Helen was
due to the many rich and beautiful comparisons. Homer further goes on the describe the scene using
more and more extravagant comparisons. The words that Homer uses to describe Helen and the
characterization of her really gives the reader a full understanding of her influence on a man's
desires. All men desired her. She was essentially the Aphrodite of the real world, and Homer
carefully worded his writings to depict that. Furthermore, the fact that men were willing to risk their
lives in battle over her significantly shows how influential Helen's beauty is to the ancient Greeks.
The mood of the Odyssey and the Iliad also helps to understand the desires of the ancient Greeks.
The moods of both stories shift greatly from book to book, but the overall mood is excitement and
action. Ultimately, at the end of the action the winner will get their desires, which in this case is
Helen, since she is the desire of the Spartans and Trojans. The Iliad is mainly about strength and
how that can lead to one's desires. The Odyssey is about wit and how intelligence can also lead one
to his/her desires. Helen is essentially set up as the prize or each competitors desire, and the
excitement and action is the mood that leads up to this. Homer's depiction of Helen is very
conventional. She is the most

Should We Shut Down Your Screen Research Paper
Some people believe that Shutting Down Screens for a Week is a good idea. But some people think
differently. Shutting down your screen can be harmful to people who use their screens often. The
people who think shutting down your screen is a good thing, say people who are less attached to
their screens have a bigger concentration and their thoughts are richer. Also, people who are more
attached to their screens have better hand eye coordination. Shutting down your screen is a bad idea.
One reason why people should not shut down their screens is because "internet users are more likely
to be exposed to a diversity of ideas," which is said in the article Is Google Making Us Stupid? by
Peter Norvig. This article is against shutting down screens. He also said "access to the internet's
wide range of ideas, lets us think better and faster." People can arrive at more creative and informed

`` Dream Story `` By Arthur Schnitzler
Arthur Schnitzler's piece, "Dream Story," constructs the tale of a man's desire to stray from the norm
where he wishes to lose himself and reality. In Schnitzler's work, there is a loss of mindfulness for
modern society in order to explore a more coveted lifestyle full of pleasures. The author's tactics
encompass foreshadowing, symbolism, and figurative language to give a full account on this
gentleman's journey to a warped reality. "Dream Story" employs the use of symbolism to
differentiate the gaps between the double lives led by Fridolin, the main character of the novel. As a
doctor, Fridolin's character is associated with white as he wears the white doctor's coat each day at
work. However, when he enters the secret society that holds a masquerade he wears a red mask and
the majority of the attendees Fridolin describes as having "blood red mouths" (3054). This transition
from white, a symbol for pureness and the greater good, to a blood red, an indicator for the devil,
hell, and evil, highlights a great difference between each lifestyle. The white of the lab coat signifies
the cultural norms and values that Fridolin has followed and upheld his entire life up until the point
that he enters the secret society. The red of the secret society acts as a stain on his good reputation
and signifies the great danger he encounters upon entering this society among individuals he does
not know. Interestingly, red also signifies communism, a poorly regarded form of government that

Stanley Chernyshevsky's Eyes-Wide Shut
Chernyshevsky states that the first purpose of art is to reproduce nature and life, and this applies to
all works of art without exception (364). Eyes Wide Shut is a movie that was directed by Stanley
Kubrick in 1999. Additionally, it was his last film. He created a film version of Dream Story, which
is a fictional (Schnitzler). The lead roles are played by Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman and Sydney
Pollack. The time is set up at Christmas in New York. Stanley Kubrick directs a number of
successful and serious films. There is no doubt that Eyes Wide Shut is one of them. (Kubrick).
Kubrick uses visual aesthetics to express his point of view indirectly. Christmas products is used to
create a holiday atmosphere, which is full of consumption. In addition, mask and costume hide the
identity and individuality of people. Finally, the money that Bill, who is male main character and
acted by Tom Cruise spent, shows he is a customer. These three things convey the theme of
consuming in Eyes Wild Shut. People are shopping to prepare for Christmas; therefore, Christmas
products are related to buying and consuming. In the movie, Christmas products are almost
everywhere especially the Christmas tree. The colorful trees contrast sharply with the main tones of
the movie, which are blue and red. Kubrick keeps reminding audiences that it is Christmas. At the
end of this movie, Bill and Alice who is female main character Nicole Kidman are doing Christmas

Power In Khaled Hosseini's A Thousand Splendid Suns
"One moment she was talking and the next she was on all fours, wide–eyed and red–faced, trying to

Khaled Hosseini develops these images throughout the novel A Thousand Splendid Suns. There are
several imperative sections where locks and keys are used as a symbol of power. Through Mariam,
Laila, Aziza, and Zalmai, Hosseini reveals the true power Rasheed has over his wives and children.

He is in complete control of their lives, and keeps them locked away for three days without food or

risk of starving, Laila takes Aziza to the local orphanage where she will be better fed. While Aziza is
at the orphanage, Rasheed often refuses to walk with Laila to visit her, he does this to take control
over her, and tease her that she cannot see her daughter. When Tariq visits Laila, Zalmai sees Tariq
and tells Rasheed about him when Rasheed returns home from work. "He took Zalmai by the elbow.
Zalmai meekly let himself be led upstairs.... Mariam saw his feet pounding the steps as he came
down. She saw him pocketing the key,"(345). Rasheed proceeds to beat Mariam and Laila profusely.
"He was still on top of Laila, his eyes wide and crazy, his hands wrapped around her neck. Laila's
face was turning blue now, her eyes had rolled back"(348). Mariam had gone to the toolshed to get a
shovel, when she sees him killing Laila she brings the shovel up and swings it down on him. He
falls off of Laila, but Mariam raises the shovel again and kills him. After Laila wakes up, Mariam

century", and also he is well noted as one of the greatest and one of the most influential directors in
history of cinematic. His films, which are mostly adapted from short stories or novels, they cover a
very wide range of genres, and they are noted for their use of realism, their dark humor, ... Show

such directors are, as Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, James Cameron, Woody
Allen, and Terry Gilliam, The Coen brothers, Ridley Scott, and George A. Romero, they have all
said that Kubrick was a source of inspiration, and with Spielberg's collaboration's. Steven Spielberg
said that "nobody could shoot a picture better in history", and that Kubrick told stories in a way
antithetical to the way we are accustomed to receiving stories". Writing in the introduction to a

Fridolin And Albertine Compare And Contrast
Arthur Schnitzler was an Austrian novelist and playwright who wrote about lust and infidelity in
twentieth century Vienna. His narrative, "Dream Story", was first published in 1925. The story tells
of a married couple living a comfortable lifestyle. The husband is a thirty–five–year–old doctor. The
younger wife is occupied by her responsibilities as wife and mother. In 1999, Stanley Kubrick
released Eyes Wide Shut, which is his adaptation of Schnitzler's "Dream Story". In Kubrick's film,
Schnitzler's protagonists, Fridolin and Albertine, are renamed Bill and Alice Harford. The
similarities between Eyes Wide Shut and Schnitzler's "Dream Story" is astonishing. The film's
narrative is updated from turn of the century Vienna to present–day New York, however the plot of
the novella remains intact. In both stories, a wife tantalizes her husband with erotic reminiscences of
her desire and lust for another man. As a result, the envious, resentful husband sets out on a nightly
excursion to try and alleviate his damaged dignity and to fulfill his unsatisfied sexual desires. The
plots of both works are approximately the same, with only a few alternations affecting how the
audience views the film. Kubrick integrates changes to the novella in order to clarify the film.
Thesis? Albertine's dream in "Dream Story" is more extensive and detailed than Alice's dream in
Eyes Wide Shut. When Fridolin arrives back home from the orgy, his wife Albertine wakes up from
a dream that

their tie, the glue between them. smoking, and most importantly, screaming. tyler's boyfriend has
always been especially good at screaming. every fight is a tidal wave crashing over tyler. it drowns
him, every hurtful phrase filling his eyes and lungs with salt. even if nothing else is happening,
they'd still end up fighting. it's over the stupidest things. this time, it it's tyler smoking in bed.
"would you quit that shit?" his boyfriend snaps, watching another ember fall onto tyler's side of the
bed. his sheets were covered in holes from where cigarette ash had burned the cloth away.
considering everything in tyler's life has gone to shit, he doesn't care. "shut the hell up and go to
bed." tyler snaps back, still laying with his back ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
as soon as his boyfriend was asleep, tyler texts josh with trembling fingers. josh calls him and tyler
sits in the living room. "j–josh–" "shhhh, breathe. just breathe. i'm coming right now." josh says
soothingly. tyler's breathing is quick and shallow as he opens the front door. josh hugs him tightly,
petting his hair. "go wait in the car, sweetheart. i'm gonna take care of this." he says. tyler nods,
accepting a soft forehead kiss from josh before curling up in the passenger seat of josh's car. josh
storms into the bedroom, grabbing tyler's shitty excuse for a boyfriend by the hair and throwing him
to the ground. he cries out, jumping up at taking a swing at josh. josh has the advantage, being fully
awake. he kicks the shit out of tyler's boyfriend, his foot missing no inch of him. he's sure to put all
of his anger into each hit, not missing a beat as he yanks him up at throws him back to the floor.
"consider this your official break up, you scum." he spits on his face and grabs tyler's things,
walking out of the house. tyler looks at the blood on josh with wide eyes. josh shushes him, setting a
bag in his lap with another kiss to tyler's forehead. "you're safe now, sweetheart. you're always safe
with me." tyler's boyfriend calls him every four hours, texting him constantly. tyler is happy, and
ignores him without any remorse. josh buys him chocolate and kisses him all over his face, never

Abraham Lincoln Boglum Research Paper

  • 1. Abraham Lincoln Boglum Research Paper future" (Fite, Gilbert 130). Borglum was not going to change the head, but carve the shoulders so as to make it appear that the head was turned. Borglum directs work on the Lincoln face using various stages of carving. Vertical drill marks in the upper left corner, and horizontal drill marks in and around the eye and on the temple, and the finished quality of the stone on the outer rim of the nose, produced by "bumping". Lincoln's nose is 20 feet long, his eyes are 11 feet wide with protruding pupils making the eyes appear alive, and his mouth is 18 feet wide. Lincoln's face was the most difficult to complete due to his beard. In September 17, 1937, Abraham Lincoln's head was dedicated. Roosevelt's face was the last one to complete. Not finding suitable rock, the sculptors cut farther back into the mountain, causing concerns about how far they were cutting. His nose is 20 feet long, his eyes are 11 feet wide shaped with eye glasses, and his mouth is 18 feet wide. While Roosevelt's head was being constructed, accommodations for tourists were being built, including plumbing, lighting, and a visitor center. Theodore Roosevelt's head was dedicated on July 2, 1939. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 2. An Analysis of the Opening Sequence of Stanley Kubrick's... An analysis of the opening sequence of Stanley Kubrick's 'Eyes Wide Shut' focusing on the use of generic conventions We frequently consider films in terms of their genre, a French word meaning 'kind' or 'sort'. It is a very complex term, not only used in film but also in other creative areas such as music, art, and literature. However, it is often considered through various conventions including iconography, similar themes and their stylistic features, as Bordwell and Thompson (2006:357) suggest, ' style...is the formal system of the film that organizes techniques' such as lighting, props and setting. This repetition of common elements across a series of films allows us as the viewer to identify genre. For example, if a film was to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Following this the camera cuts back to Dr Harford who appears to be wearing a smart black suit, which could signify various things, such as an upper class, wealthy figure which could also lead to possible narrative conclusions. The mise–en–scene in this long shot of Dr Bill Harford includes red curtains, which could symbolize, love or even danger and blood. However, the dominant colour at the beginning of the shot is cool blue. There is a large bookshelf included within the frame of the shot, which could signify that the character is knowledgeable, intelligent and is also a prop commonly know in detective films, linking to the mystery genre. The camera then tracks backwards as the male figure walks towards the camera into another soft–lit room, once again including red coloured curtains, which seems to already be a reoccurring prop. This shot is also a long take, with no edits, which is a popular technique used in drama's. However as Ciment, Adair and Bononno suggest (2001:226) 'Kubrick's frequent use of dolly backs is one of the major recurring stylistic features in Eyes Wide Shut and expresses the ambiguity at the heart of the film: intoxication, loss of consciousness, fainting, dreams.' Kubrick has already given various clues through the use of generic conventions by the use of stars, props, lighting and sound. However, as Williams (2005:397) suggests, 'Kubrick has long played with genre, emulating and exemplifying the pinnacles of trash genres ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. A Worn Path Narrative The rusty, metal gate is broken and falling apart. I open the gate to let myself in as the wind blows by gently. The earthy and dead smells, like a cemetery are very unpleasant for me, but I can't give up now. I need to know what happened to my family before they died. I know it wasn't a suicide like the police said. I lost my family when I was nine; my dad, my mom and both of my grandparents. I've stayed at my aunt's house ever since. And there's never a day that I don't miss them. As I slowly walk toward the house, I can tell how humid the air is, by my sticky skin is rubbing against each other. I'm blinded by the fog around the house as I step closer and closer. The place is silent, so silent that I could hear my own heart beating; fast ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Characters Of Cujo Cujo Based on the descriptions and events in this excerpt. I can infer that the title character, Cujo, has turned rabid and he is out to look for blood. I can also infer that his eyes are red and watery with thick substance leaking from it. Finally, I can infer that he has already killed his owner because he had mud and blood all over him. This was all stated in paragraphs 10 and 11, "The dog's eyes settled on hers. They were red and rheumy. They were leaking some viscous substance. The dog seemed to be weeping gummy tears. His tawny coat was caked and matted with mud and– Blood. is that..." All of this evidence told me that Cujo is rabid and has already killed his owner. Donna's actions and thoughts reveal that her character is very clumsy and when she gets frightened she is unable to think and is unaware of what she is doing. In paragraph 13 it states, "She couldn't seem to move. No breath...There was no contact between her brain and her legs...Her hands were stupid blocks of flesh south of her wrists with no feeling in them. Her urine went. She was unaware of it save for some vague sensation of distant warmth." This tells me that when Donna saw the dog, Cujo, she didn't know what to do and just stood there. Also, in paragraph 16 it states, "She turned in a great shambling drunk's pivot, slamming her lower leg against the Pinto's fender and sending a steely bolt of pain up to her hip...She hit her crazybone and uttered a thin shriek of pain." Donna's actions tell me that she ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Personal Narrative: No Place In High School As soon as I closed my eyes, I instantly felt different. I was no longer wide awake, mind raring to learn and to go, go go. Silence automatically engulfed me allowing me to sink into my mind. My eyes instantly when shut felt heavy, and slightly burned as if through I had to keep my eyes open for sixty seconds, rather than closed. No smells hit me as the classroom was scent free , and I was sitting next to girl who probably more then likely showered everyday. So she gave off no scent. • 8. Eyes Wide Shut Analysis Stanley Kubrick, known for his critically acclaimed films, sent the world into a frenzy with the film he released right before his death. His last movie, Eyes Wide Shut, based on Traumnovelle (Dream Story), is a social commentary on the consumerist society we live in today and its relationship to the class system in place. It is important to note that the backdrop of the film is Christmastime in New York City. People who are familiar with Kubrick's films are aware that everything the camera passes is relevant to his overall message. Notorious for his perfectionism, it was not surprising to find he had, "sent a designer to New York to measure the exact width of the streets and the distance between newspaper vending machines," in order to reconstruct Greenwich Village in London, where they were filming (Nicholson 2017). The film took 15 months to complete, earning Kubrick the Guinness world record for longest continual film shoot. This time frame is more believable after learning he once made Tom Cruise shoot 95 takes of him walking through a door, Cruise even developed an ulcer working under Kubrick. However, all the extreme measures paid off. Even the background actors play an important role in the film. • 9. Analysis Of Stanley Kubrick 's The And The Post... Edited part 2 "The use of colour to express complexity of mind and to affirmatively counterpoint brutality also distinguishes the post–Strangelove films. As Sergei Eisenstein (an early theoretical influence on Kubrick) predicted, colour in serious cinema would become integral to meaning. But unlike some of Eisenstein's ideological descendants, Kubrick did not consider beauty to be a varnish for social injustice." (rice, pg2) Stanley Kubrick began making films in the 1950s; his early films were in black and white since, at the time, color film stock was very expensive and only used on big budget films with big stars. His first technicolor feature "Sparticus" (1960) was extensively storyboarded and was even put through the same rigorous color tests that Walt Disney used for all his feature films since Kubrick was obsessive about color. Due to struggles with actor Kirk Douglas, Kubrick refused to work with star actors which resulted in him not working in color for nearly eight years. Black and White: The duality of Man. In the context of Kubrick's films, the relationship between black and white takes on its own independent significance as an element of colour design. Kubrick uses black and white as if the were on either end of the spectrum, polar opposites but made up of the same spectrum. This duality of colour echoes the duality of man in Full Metal Jacket and 2001 and on a less obvious way his other films. Kubrick returned to color film stock for his masterpiece ... The underlying metaphorical meaning of what Benjamin Franklin is saying is that before marriage one must keep their eyes open. What he is stating is that if you don't keep your eyes wide open you could be missing out on certain opportunity's that could be better than what you have now. Or in other words don't limit yourself, nor be frightened to try new things. But in the end, make sure you are with someone who makes you happy. The other part of this quote is quite interesting. While in a committed relationship premarital counseling can help resolve many of the common issues that individuals face. The counselor can help point out the issues that are vital and find a practical strategy on how to deal with it. The second part of Franklins advice is equally crucial. Marriage is all about being forgiving, overlooking, and staying positive. The first is very critical when it comes to being in a marriage. Being forgiving is pretty much the same as being tolerant to towards one another. The dictionary definition of being tolerant from Oxford Dictionaries says that being tolerant is "showing willingness to allow opinions or a certain behavior that one does not necessarily agree with." This definition explains why a lot of individuals who are married experience frustration towards their spouse. In many cases the person you are involved with will have a certain behavior or interest that the individuals you associate with won't always agree with, but just because they have those certain behaviors or interests that others can't seem to grasp doesn't mean that it is going to ruin or even be the slightest bit harmful towards your marriage. • 19. The Culture Of Shut Up By Jon Lovett Essay Within a society that is reliant on the internet as a means of connectedness to one another, there will be drawbacks. The fate of this society is how people grasp this concept of unlimited compatibility and get around the drawbacks. Within the internet and all the ideas and saying that are flooded into the streams of computer–human interactions there will always be room for backlash and critique. In the article "The Culture of Shut Up" Jon Lovett produces his ideas on how society needs to get a grip on the endless amount of connectedness that spawns from the internet and how people must deal with the fact of how unreserved it is. When someone says something, a person doesn't agree with, Lovett states that you cannot just tell them to "shut up" because they won't shut up, they don't have to and they never will. "You don't beat someone's idea by beating the thinker. You beat their idea with an idea. The fact of the matter is that society must use the connectedness offered by the modern age of technology to their advantage rather than be set off track by some drawbacks that come with it. Jon Lovett uses the internet and the effect on society as his topic in "The Culture of Shut Up." • 21. Visual Pleasure And Narrative Cinema In Laura Mulvey's essay Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema, she discusses the psychoanalysis of scopophilic and voyeuristic tendencies. Scopophilia is defined as the pleasure in looking and being looked at, which, in the case of this essay can be broken that down into the pleasure of looking as the active dominant male, and the pleasure in being looked at as the passive female. I plan to analyze Mulvey's ideas of patriarchy in film, specifically the "male gaze" and how these ideas are portrayed through the film of Eyes Wide Shut. The male protagonist in film is often caught by the viewer, in the pleasuring act of looking at females. Through film, Mulvey argues that the male is seen as the dominant figure, imposing a "male gaze" on his female victim. This phenomenon is perpetuated due to the language and instruction of the patriarchal order: how someone must act due to society's teachings. Mulvey argues that this pleasure may be contradicted by the female arousal of castration anxiety among the male protagonist, a theory exemplified by the plot of Eyes Wide Shut. In the film Eyes Wide Shut –whose name derives from an extrapolation of the secret society and their voyeuristic preferences that act as the focus of the film– Bill tries to escape the anxiety of metaphoric castration, imposed on him by the knowledge of his wives sexual fantasies for other men. His solution involves a voyeuristic secret society where he can derive a sense of, "pleasure in using another person ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 22. Voyeurism In Rear Window Hitchcock began his career in the early 1920s as a silent filmmaker, and rose to fame after his first successful silent thriller, The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog (1927). As sound technology progressed and became more accessible to filmmakers and movie theaters, Hitchcock began to work in sound. However, for the remainder of his career, Hitchcock was profoundly influenced by what he called 'pure cinema'. This idea represents the film medium and its affective and expressive capabilities, unconstrained by the narratives and dialogue used to drive the storytelling process in literature and more modern 'talkies'. The camera then pans towards his broken leg, encased in a white cast with the words 'Here lie the broken bones of L.B. Jefferies'. Despite the lack of narration or dialogue, this scene is a highly effective introduction to the film's protagonist and the setting in which the most of the action will take place. This highly choreographed long take discloses an impressive volume of narrative information using only visual cues; the audience is now conscious of their protagonist's name, his broken leg, the vibrant neighborhood where he lives, and even the summer heat that envelops the scene. The expositional scene is an excellent example of Hitchcock's 'pure cinema' because it immediately deepens the audience's participation in the film and gives the film a tangible quality, as if the audience were physically standing in Jefferies' apartment and surveying the setting. Like Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick also began his career working outside the 'talkie' medium. He was a talented photographer at a young age, landing a job shooting for a magazine at only seventeen. Most notable are his critiques towards the alien interactions between different genders and his belief that the film's only purpose is to objectify women, but Edelstein is wrong about his analysis of this film. • 26. Epoch Of Helen Helen of Troy is regarded as the most beautiful woman in the world. She is desired by every man, and she essentially started The Trojan War, which lasted 10 years. Helen is a central figure in various Greek mythological stories for her beauty as well as for her decisions and actions. Despite these main similarities, in various stories Helen is depicted totally differently. The way in which Helen is portrayed is different from epoch to epoch, and from culture to culture. The three main epochs that contain stories of Helen are the ancient Greek era, the medieval Christian era, and the contemporary era. The two main Greek stories including Helen are Homer's Iliad and Odyssey. The main medieval Christian story including Helen is Dante's Inferno. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Every man desired her, yet she was stuck with an ugly King Menelaus, the ruler of the Spartans. Helen, however, did know her sheer beauty and because of this she was very frivolous, and that led to her being unfaithful to Menelaus, and she ran off with Paris, son of Priam, the ruler of Troy. Troy was a rival city–state of the Spartans, and thus a war begun over Helen. Homer describes Helen's beauty to that of a goddess. He writes, "Helen came out of her scented chamber, a moving grace like Artemis, straight as a shaft of gold" (The Odyssey, Book IV). This shows how elegant Helen was due to the many rich and beautiful comparisons. Homer further goes on the describe the scene using more and more extravagant comparisons. The words that Homer uses to describe Helen and the characterization of her really gives the reader a full understanding of her influence on a man's desires. All men desired her. She was essentially the Aphrodite of the real world, and Homer carefully worded his writings to depict that. Furthermore, the fact that men were willing to risk their lives in battle over her significantly shows how influential Helen's beauty is to the ancient Greeks. The mood of the Odyssey and the Iliad also helps to understand the desires of the ancient Greeks. The moods of both stories shift greatly from book to book, but the overall mood is excitement and action. Ultimately, at the end of the action the winner will get their desires, which in this case is Helen, since she is the desire of the Spartans and Trojans. The Iliad is mainly about strength and how that can lead to one's desires. The Odyssey is about wit and how intelligence can also lead one to his/her desires. Helen is essentially set up as the prize or each competitors desire, and the excitement and action is the mood that leads up to this. Homer's depiction of Helen is very conventional. Involuntarily she squeezed her eyes shut against the bright light, causing her to see a different white wall. A white wall which brought back painful memories filled with screams of take me back, smudged mascara, and a feeling of hopelessness. • 32. `` Dream Story `` By Arthur Schnitzler Arthur Schnitzler's piece, "Dream Story," constructs the tale of a man's desire to stray from the norm where he wishes to lose himself and reality. In Schnitzler's work, there is a loss of mindfulness for modern society in order to explore a more coveted lifestyle full of pleasures. The author's tactics encompass foreshadowing, symbolism, and figurative language to give a full account on this gentleman's journey to a warped reality. "Dream Story" employs the use of symbolism to differentiate the gaps between the double lives led by Fridolin, the main character of the novel. As a doctor, Fridolin's character is associated with white as he wears the white doctor's coat each day at work. However, when he enters the secret society that holds a masquerade he wears a red mask and the majority of the attendees Fridolin describes as having "blood red mouths" (3054). This transition from white, a symbol for pureness and the greater good, to a blood red, an indicator for the devil, hell, and evil, highlights a great difference between each lifestyle. The white of the lab coat signifies the cultural norms and values that Fridolin has followed and upheld his entire life up until the point that he enters the secret society. The red of the secret society acts as a stain on his good reputation and signifies the great danger he encounters upon entering this society among individuals he does not know. Interestingly, red also signifies communism, a poorly regarded form of government that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 39. Fridolin And Albertine Compare And Contrast Arthur Schnitzler was an Austrian novelist and playwright who wrote about lust and infidelity in twentieth century Vienna. His narrative, "Dream Story", was first published in 1925. The story tells of a married couple living a comfortable lifestyle. The husband is a thirty–five–year–old doctor. The younger wife is occupied by her responsibilities as wife and mother. In 1999, Stanley Kubrick released Eyes Wide Shut, which is his adaptation of Schnitzler's "Dream Story". In Kubrick's film, Schnitzler's protagonists, Fridolin and Albertine, are renamed Bill and Alice Harford. The similarities between Eyes Wide Shut and Schnitzler's "Dream Story" is astonishing. The film's narrative is updated from turn of the century Vienna to present–day New York, however the plot of the novella remains intact. In both stories, a wife tantalizes her husband with erotic reminiscences of her desire and lust for another man. As a result, the envious, resentful husband sets out on a nightly excursion to try and alleviate his damaged dignity and to fulfill his unsatisfied sexual desires. The plots of both works are approximately the same, with only a few alternations affecting how the audience views the film. Kubrick integrates changes to the novella in order to clarify the film.
