3. Harris Shutter Development
I used the same picture and developed it using different ways to create the Harris Shutter effect.
Because there are a lot of different levels, choosing different colours makes each layer stand out in an
unusual way.

4. I really like how the York
Minster is focused into
the centre and even with
all the layering the
Minster is still deep in
focus. This contrasts with
the ghostly movement
below.
The layered images
creating the multiple
exposure has given the
bottom of the photograph
movement and even an
effect to make the public
look ghost like, as it they
were there years ago. This
is a great way to contrast
the old and the new in a
urban city.
I slightly burned into
the picture to make the
building appear darker
and so more features
and detail would
appear within them. It
makes them stand out
more and makes the
whole street look
together and it can be
seen to the very back
of the photograph and
it is still in detail just by
adding a slight darkness
to a particular picture.

Evaluate: ideas eg analysis, results;
How well do you feel you have realised your ideas and intentions and what results
have you got?
I am pleased with the result this technique has given my final photograph because I like the way
the York Minster is in focus but the lower you go down the photograph the more out of focus the
picture gets and it is almost ghost like. This contrasts with each other showing how long the urban
city buildings have been there for but what a short time the people moving through are there for.
This is an easy and clever technique to produce. By layering multiple images of a similar scene you
can line up a certain object in the background to keep in focus, and the rest of the movement
comes from using the opacity levels to merge all photographs together. I feel I have realised my
intentions of showing the different levels of what goes on in a city centre has been showed well
because of the layering and the levels of focus to out of focus.my intentions came from my
inspiration artist, Stephanie Jung. I feel I have incorporated her work into mine by the fast
movement of the pubic walking below the buildings of York.
Qualities:
Consider the aesthetic qualities of your work. How does it look? What do you like
about it? What are the strongest and weakest elements from an aesthetic point of
view?
I like the quality of this image as it has a deep depth of field focusing in on the York Minster. This
makes this building stand out the most in the photograph and instantly this is the first thing you
look at, but the contrast of the focus background to the out of focus layering of the public makes
this picture seem one. I used the burn tool to make the buildings stand out and to make it contrast
with the ghost shapes of the people walking down the streets of York. It makes it look mysterious
and this has been done by the double exposure and layering effects during the post production
stage. Double exposure images are all to do with post production and this is what completed my
image.
6. How could you improve your work? Could you develop your work further with
additional work? What would you try to achieve with this? Could you undertake
further experiments? If so, what would they be?
I will continue developing this techniques but with other significant buildings, or more urban
eroded buildings. It will still need to be in a city centre or where people or cars move so I can still
get the movement in the foreground. I would like to improve my work by keeping all the buildings
in focus and just having the people or cars out of focus. I would also like to explore not only using
the opacity levels to create these double exposures but to also use some of the other features such
as addition, multiple, deep light etc.
Finally you should consider if the images you have produced fulfil the brief you were
set. Do they match the theme? Are they experimental? Explain your answers using
specific examples.
I have produced one main image and from that I produced three more experimental images
connecting to the Harris Shutter techniques. These do look good but don’t quite fit into the theme
that I originally choose. It was good to experiment with new techniques but I just kept my favourite
image that was the double exposure. I have experimented with double exposure a lot, as you will
see further through the evaluations, and I have become more and more confident with producing
them. It fits with the brief of an urban theme because of the city location and I have focused
looking at urban buildings and how they structure a city. In this particular image I have succeeded
in making my final image to still focus in on the urban buildings but show the movement and the
people who walk through everyday.

8. I changed the colour of just one of the layers using saturation ad the brightness. I also layered it
with a black and white version of the layer and then changed the opacity to show the contrast
and making unusual colours.

9. I love how the bus was
captured in one of the
photographs I took
originally. Because it has
been exposed with other
pictures without any
other vehicle in them
makes it stand out and
almost look like a ghost
bus.
I burned into the picture
where big ben is and the
top of west minster to
make it stand out from
the was of the crowds of
people. My theme is to
focus on the buildings
and structure in cities
but incorporate scenes
of people and cars
passing through showing
the building stand proud
over its city what it
makes therefore I
wanted to make it stand
out and giving it some
depth in detail and
colour did this.
Again I have introduced
many images exposure
together to make this
ghost scene of people. I
like when one people
overlaps another
creating a whole new
shape and colour.
10. Evaluate: ideas eg analysis, results;
How well do you feel you have realised your ideas and intentions and what results
have you got?
I am pleased with my results, just like the last photograph I have managed to keep the building in
the same position on each layer to keep it in focus white the foreground of the photograph is ghost
like and showing the movement throughout the city. This exceeded my intentions I wanted in this
photograph. I wanted to experiment with the same technique I used above to see if it works with
other buildings.

Qualities:
Consider the aesthetic qualities of your work. How does it look? What do you like
about it? What are the strongest and weakest elements from an aesthetic point of
view?
I like the way Big Ben is in focus and by layering of two similar photographs I can get a ghost like
feel in the foreground as the people pass though it city. I like how I captured a bus passing though
and because it has been exposed it looks ghost like just like the people. I didn’t use many layers
because this part of London is quite busy therefore there would be too much movement and the
bottom of the picture would have looked distorted.

How could you improve your work? Could you develop your work further with
additional work? What would you try to achieve with this? Could you undertake
further experiments? If so, what would they be?
I could improve this picture by layering one or two more similar pictures and by using the opacity
levels I could create more of a distorted, ghost effect in the foreground. This picture looks like all
the people are in one image, showing the ghost effect has not worked as well, therefore more
layers would make this effect stronger.
Finally you should consider if the images you have produced fulfil the brief you were
set. Do they match the theme? Are they experimental? Explain your answers using
specific examples.
The image I have produced does fulfil the brief and match the Urban environment theme. I
experimented with the final picture changing it to black and white and tried to do another Harris
Shutter effect. This picture was to experiment with the first technique in the above photograph
and I liked it so much I choose it one of my final three photographs to evaluate. The more you
experiment the more you can see what works with and this can improve later work. I would like to
use this in my final set of images. It is an effective technique that gives a picture a lot of power if
done right.
14. This whole image is
largely inspired by
Stephanie Jung. Her
double exposures of busy
cities overlapping to
create a fast moving and
almost blurred look is
what I was inspired by and
tried to re create myself.
This picture is made up of
5 different image. All
focused on the same spot
but slight moved and the
movement below creates,
again, the ghost scene.
This time even the
buildings and flags have
moved with the crowds
showing how sometimes
over the years even
buildings get forgotten
and placed into a blur.
I have learnt with this
moving the camera a bit
at a time you can create
a big difference. And
with the more
photographs you layer
the more detail you
with loose. There is a
lot more ghost like
imagery in this picture
than the other two
before it.

Evaluate: ideas eg analysis, results;
How well do you feel you have realised your ideas and intentions
and what results have you got?
I intentionally wanted to recreate the Stephanie Jung style which
consists of many layers to create one photograph, these layers are slightly
moved to one side to create this distorted effect. It creates a repetitive but
clever effect that shows all the layers in a city, good and bad. I feel I have
done this well and created a similar effect that Stephanie Jung created.
Qualities:
Consider the aesthetic qualities of your work. How does it look?
What do you like about it? What are the strongest and weakest
elements from an aesthetic point of view?
I like the look of this photograph. It shows the layers all piled up on top of each other to create a
similar effect that Stephanie Jung created. Unlike the other two images, this image even makes the
buildings look as if they have moved slightly, but if you look deep into the photograph you can see
each layer, as if you were stripping back each layer within the city.
The ghost like people, like the other two photographs are still there and this effect has taken place
a lot more here because of the amount of layers. I like how the layers have also carried on the
bunting all along the city. The weakest element in this picture would be the colours. I would
brighten the colours so the yellow bunting can burst though and the back and white buildings can
contrast together to make the ghost like people sink into the foreground more.
16. How could you improve your work? Could you develop your work further with
additional work? What would you try to achieve with this? Could you undertake
further experiments? If so, what would they be?
I would improve this image by changing the colour slightly. It is quite dull so brightening the
picture would make the bright colours such as the yellow bunting stand out. Exciting colours will
make this picture look more exciting. Having a different shade on each layer could create a unusual
but exciting effect, this could be an effect I could develop and undertake further.
Finally you should consider if the images you have produced fulfil the brief you were
set. Do they match the theme? Are they experimental? Explain your answers using
specific examples.
This set of images fits with my theme, Urban environment, because it is based in an urban city and
because the buildings that make the city. The more layers and the slight movement from the
camera creates a more distorted photography but you can still see each layer. Each layer is like a
different time and you can see the people moving through while the buildings stay in the same
place. Despite them being photographs of a typical cityscape, layering each singular image on top
of another gives the landscape an exciting twist to it and makes the photograph more
experimental.
