Every place has a taste. My highschool tastes bland, and a little bit like a cracker beginning to go
stale. My home tastes like sunlight on autumn leaves. Every place has a taste, but I will never forget
the taste of the majesty of the San Juan Mountains.
The first time I laid eyes upon the San Juan Mountains, I couldn't believe that I was only a few miles
away from the cold desert that is Colorado. The further into the rugged mountain range the highway
led me, the more awe and disbelief fell upon me. I felt small, and as if I was the first person to ever
discover those hidden valleys that support entire ecosystems of plants and animals. The scattered
puffs of cloud above me painted shadows along the razor–edged peaks, giving an appearance of a
mural, rather than massive chunks of rock carved away by the centuries. I could hear nothing except
for the pounding of far off waterfalls and the whispering of the pines, who shared secrets that
nobody but they would ever know. I felt like an intruder, and yet welcomed. I was lost, but at home.
Around a bend, and out of the blue, there came a town. Even so far from the nearest city, the town
was butsling. Main Street was lined with colorful buildings restored from the Victorian era. A two
floor hotel, elegant even in it's old age, announced its presence at the corner of an intersection. The
stout brick walls stood fortified, defying the valley winds. The occasional house could be seen
through the tightly packed boutiques, shops, and art galleries. One was baby blue and white,
another, the color of dried saffron. Further on down Main Street, natural hot springs revealed
themselves. People of every age packed into the heated pools. A vicious game of volleyball had
commenced, and more people were flocking to the net even in the second it took to drive past.
Eventually, the quaint Main Street ended, and the highway led the car through several switchbacks
that twisted up the side of the valley. At the top, a weather worn sign named the town "Ouray", and

Especially in southern California, beach erosion has some serious social, economic and

Being stuck inside a home all winter with lack of activity and social interaction can actually be
detrimental to people's health, especially vulnerable populations such as senior citizens. The citizens
are also able to freely get outdoors and get exercise due to the safety and security of the city. Not
only is it a low crime city, but the city has made many trails and bike lanes throughout the city to
enable its' citizens to enjoy all the beauty the city has to offer. Another aspect of the city that can
affect residents' health is the fact that it is the base of the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains.
This can cause an increase in smog conditions because the smog tends to stack up against the
mountains when there is not enough of an off–shore flow of wind to remove the smog. This can
affect allergies, asthma and can also cause other respiratory problems.
Nutrition, physical activity and obesity is one of the Healthy People 2020 leading health indicators
that is relevant to the community. As previously mentioned the city of La Verne offers a wide variety
of exercise and outdoor activity opportunities such as community exercise classes, bike lanes and
walking trails, as well as a safe environment for its' citizens to be able to exercise outdoors. It also

Effects Of Sylmar Earthquake On San Fernando Valley
One of the most significant earthquakes to hit the San Fernando Valley in the past was the 1971 San
Fernando/ Sylmar earthquake. On February 9, 1971 at about 6 o'clock the cities of San Fernando
and Sylmar experienced an earthquake that ruptured along the Sierra Madre Fault Zone (Oakeshott,
Gordon B). The epicenter of this earthquake was reported to be in the San Gabriel Valley Mountains
above the valley. The citizens of both cities felt tremendous shaking. The magnitude of the
earthquake was measured as a 6.6 on the Richter scale and the shaking had the intensity of a level 11
(extreme) on the Modified Mercalli system (U.S. Geological Survey). The shaking of this 6.6
magnitude earthquake lasted about 12 seconds with a very strong ground motion. The source of this
faulting was located about five miles to the north of the San Fernando valley. The surface faulting of
this earthquake was reported to be seen along the surface of the San Fernando fault zone from a
point south of Sylmar, the faulting stretched 6 miles more as far as east to the little Tujunga Canyon,
also more surface faulting was reported more east as well. In total the maximum surface rupture was
12 miles and the amount of slip was about 6 feet (U.S. Geological Survey). The type of fault
scientist label this earthquake to be was an oblique–slip or also known as a thrust. The depth of this
earthquake was 13km (8.1 mi) and the peak acceleration was when it reached the Pacoima dam

inspiration from real life events. While it can be necessary take liberties with the story for dramatic

Introduction: I have chosen the City of Lancaster's General Plan entitled, "Soaring into the Future".
Entitled so to pay homage to the City's desire to grow and change, as well as a nod to its economic
support from Edwards Air Force Base. The City of Lancaster is a city in the Northern Los Angeles
County, in the western Mojave Desert. The City is separated from other communities because it is
located in the valley between the Tehachapi Mountains to the North and the San Gabriel Mountains
to the South. The area has a warm semi–arid steppe climate which is less hot but rainier than areas
with a typical arid climate. This particular plan when into effect July 14, 2009 and is expected to last
until the year 2030. Ultimately I will argue that due to the desire to maintain the City of Lancaster as

On the island in Iceland where the volcano erupted, a lot of people didn't go back, either, but many
did. McPhee does a good job of getting the points of view of the people who choose the risk. Some
people have no choice–they were born in a threatened place and don't have the means to move, but
others build or buy expensive homes on the slopes of unstable mountains. He finds experts on the
geology of the San Gabriels who consciously live right in the path of potential debris flows, as well
as real estate agents who blithely talk their way around the risk, reassuring potential buyers more
than they ought to be reassured. McPhee's interest in the human beings involved as well as the earth

acres from the San Gabriel Valley Mission. It would be nice to receive a land grant like that today.

Because of the Transcontinental Railroad, many Chinese immigrants were paid laborers working on
the project and were thought of by employers as reliable laborers who would work, without

waves because of the grand opportunity. These immigrants were paid significantly lower wages than
white workers, then blamed Chinese laborers for lashing down pay and taking away jobs. After the

The issue of homelessness has plagued the United States for many years, more today in populated
urbanized cities. The San Gabriel Valley began with the Spanish conquest of the indigenous Tongva
people, leading to the Mexican government finally secularizing and dividing the land to individuals.
This further prompted large scale industrialization works such as railroads to be attempted, and the
immense success of the railroads, along with the blossoming agricultural economy, led to the
immigration of Mexican–American and Asian–American laborers to seek employment in this area
(Singleton 49–50). The issue of homelessness grew hand in hand with the ever growing economy.
The focus of the study of homelessness was on two cities in particular, El Monte and Baldwin Park,
but an overview of the Service Planning Area 3 gives a better starting point in viewing the area. The
physical location of the San Gabriel Valley (right) is east of the city of Los Angeles, bordered to the
north by mountains, contained by hills to the east and west, and completed by the Puente Hills to the
south. It is one of the most ethnically diverse regions in the country, including 31 different cities,

I consider the city of Rowland Heights an ethnic space within Southern California because it
corresponds with my interpretation of an ethnic space. To elaborate, an ethnic space is an area, such
as a city or town, that has a prominent culture reflecting the prevalent ethnic group within that area.
During my adolescence, I lived in the city of La Puente, which is primarily Hispanic/Latino,
however, as I aged, I began to attend school within Rowland Heights, which is primarily Asian.
Having said that, when I experienced the transition into Rowland Heights, there was an
unfamiliarity of the environment and the cultural ambience of the city came across as exceedingly
prominent. For this reason, I chose to emphasize on the instance of Rowland Heights to exemplify
my description of an ethnic space. Although I lived in La Puente, I transferred into the Rowland
Unified School District (RUSD) after I finished the 5th grade. Thereafter, I attended middle school
and high school in Rowland Heights while living in La Puente. The city of La Puente is largely
Hispanic/Latino, and therefore aligning well with my cultural background. Furthermore, considering
much of my extended family lived within these bounds, and reared within the context of La Puente,
it is apparent that these factors contributed to the centralization of my cultural experiences. For
