The trailer uses ominous music and a voiceover at the beginning to introduce the characters and thriller plot. As the trailer progresses, the music speeds up to match the increasing pace of clips. Title cards appear quickly at the end, identifying the seven sins and including the tagline "let he who is without sin try to survive." Close ups of stars like Morgan Freeman, Brad Pitt and Gwyneth Paltrow are used to attract audiences. Later clips get longer to build tension as the color grading creates a dark, film noir look.
2. Sound
A voiceover is used at the start of the trailer to introduce the main
characters which feature in the movie. This voice over also describes
the plot of the film and how the characters are involved in the films
development.
Ominous music is used throughout the beginning of the trailer. This
creates the feeling of a thriller as it builds suspense in the audience.
As seen in a large number of trailers, the tempo of the music speeds up
as the trailer progresses to match the speed of the clips that are being
played.
3. Titles
The titles only begin to appear towards the end of the trailer and appear
in quick succession.
Contains credits title cards.
The seven sins appear as title cards extremely quickly on screen and
disappear after a couple seconds.
There is a title card saying ‘let he who is without sin try to survive’. This
quote is clearly taken from the bible and shows that the film is about
murder as people who have sinned are being killed off and the only
people who have a chance at surviving are the ones who have not
sinned.
No title card with the actors name on it and instead the voice over reads
out the actors names as a clip of them appears on screen.
4. Editing
In this film trailer, there is a large quantity of close ups of the big name
cast consisting of Morgan Freeman, Brad Pitt, and Gwyneth Paltrow.
This is to attract the attention of a large audience.
Towards the end of the trailer, the length of the clips increase to build
on the tension that has already created in the first half of the trailer.
The colour grading in the trailer is very film noir. Meaning that the
scenes are deprived of much colour and are decreased in contrast which
creates a grey/ dark look to the film.
5. camerawork
Throughout the trailer, there is a consistent use of close ups. Not only
are the on the actors, but the close ups are also used on props such as a
bed which seems to have someone in it and a metronome which shows
that time is passing at a steady rate. These close ups help build a sense
of tension and mystery as the audience are left wondering what else
could be in the frame and how that furthers the plot of the movie. This
helps attract the audience into going to the cinema and watching the
film. Since this film came out and there was no focus on online
marketing (since the internet was brand new). It was important for a
film to attract audiences through its trailer.
