1. Analysing Trailers
Purpose of Research:
To understand how trailers can effectively get the audience engaged with the
film.
To observe which things are crucial to include in a trailer and the effectiveness.
To acknowledge what works well in trailers to make them successful.
To gain an understanding of what trailer style suits different genres, or observe
if their is any difference.
2. Baywatch 2017 Drama Film/Action-
Genre: Drama Film/Action
Year Released: 2017
Trailer length: 2:03
Website:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=SeWHDmm1M6c
3. The trailer starts with non-diegetic music of drum rolls accompanied by a voice-over of
the main actor Dwayne Johnson.
The establishing shot of the beach with the lifeguard coming out of the ocean lets the
audience know where the film is being set and also is a good indicator to weather or not
the audience will like the film due to the fact that it is set mainly on the beach.
‘We protect when other people don’t want to protect’ is said in the voice-over and
suggests that this film can be dramatic and violent as there will be people in this film
that need to be looked after.
Throughout the trailer there are many different well known songs (non-diegetic music)
which would appeal to their selected audience. This tells me that it is important to
include music that goes with the genre and in this case it is drama and action.
‘This Summer’, ‘The Beach’, ‘Is Back’, ‘Baywatch’, ‘May 2017’ are all flashed on screen
between snippets from the film. Big, white, bold writing on a red background gets the
audience's attention.
4. As a whole the trailer gathers a short montage of what the film includes. It included a
basic storyline of what the film is about but doesn’t give away too much therefore
making the audience what to go and watch their film with altogether is the purpose of a
trailer.
The camerawork throughout is limited with the occasional shot-reverse-shot,
establishing shot, long shot and panning. There is also a common usage of slow
motion which to me helps the genre of drama as slow motion is used to heighten any
feelings.
In Conclusion…
Watching the ‘Baywatch’ trailer it has taught me that using a voice-over has a big impact but
then combining it with real footage from the film with the dialogue used shows the audience
what is in store for them if they choose to watch the film. Non-diegetic music has a huge
impact on the trailer but it has to reflect the genre of the film. However I haven't seen this
film therefore the trailer may make the film look better than it is in this case which just goes
to show that trailers are very important as it is the first thing the the audience is going to see.
6. Non-diegetic music starts straight away with a tilt shot of the location of the film, which
is set in a prison. The song ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ by Queen, is extremely well known
and questions the audience's perception of fantasy, the lines in the song ‘Is this the real
life? Is this just fantasy? Caught in a landslide, no escape from reality’ fits the film
perfectly as the film question the good of the good people. The music also questions
are the bad actually good but stuck in a make believe world created by themselves.
The low angle close-up of Harley Quinn, and close-up of all of the other characters
trapped in the prison shows the audience that these characters are important and have
a big impact on the film. This shows me that a trailer has to include and make clear who
is the main characters in the film.
The non-diegetic music is played throughout the whole trailer, just the one song is
accompanied by enhanced sounds of explosions, gunshots and mechanical vehicles.
This shows that the film is jam-packed with action and violence showing the audience
what to expect.
7. ‘Worst’, ‘Heroes’, ‘Ever’, are shown across the screen in bold just like before but
this time multicolores and suited to their colours of the film poster, which tells
me that everything has to link together from posters to the trailers to the film.
Like ‘Baywatch’ the film takes many parts from the film and gives the audience
small glances of the film but not giving too much away, this way the audience
can make their own assumptions and questions like, why are they in prison?,
how did they get there?, why is it called suicide squad? Etc…
In Conclusion…
From watching this trailer it’s taught me that all trailers seem to follow the idea of using non-
diegetic music. Having watching this film many times I have realised that the order of the film
can be changed when it comes to creating the trailer. This can be seen as a positive thing as
sometimes it make the write up of the film look better but then on the other hand if you
change the order of the film the audience may be disappointed as you have has a different
ending than what was expected and could be confusing to the audience.
8. How To Be Single-
Genre: Romantic/Comedy
Year Released: 2016
Trailer length: 2:19
Website:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=PydEETyCVYQ
9. The ident in this trailer is right at the start over the top of non-diegetic music from Fifth
Harmony ‘Worth It.’ This upbeat track is really girly and shows that it's a chick flick
which would appeal to girls.
Establishing shots shows the location of where it’s set and in the film in New York.
There are no voice-overs in this trailer but dialogue from what is in the film, it is placed in
between pink and blue text over a black screen saying things such as ‘If Your Not
Having Fun Being Single’, ‘Then You're Not Doing It Right’, which hammers home the
genre and the theme.
There is a U cut where there is a scene, the voice from that scene continues but we are
shown a different scene on screen, then we go back to the original scene and the
dialogue continues.
Their are 3 pieces of well known tracks used as non-diegetic music which are all upbeat
and happy, this shows this film is about partying which helps with their genre of a
Romantic/Comedy.
10. Just like the previous trailers they have included many parts of the film into the trailer but
this time which wasn't really in the previous ones, in this chosen trailer their scenes
seem to be longer with more screen time on certain characters and as the audience
we seem to connect with the characters more.
The trailer as a whole shows two main characters with the use of group shots and two
shots we can see that due to their positioning we can tell that they are connected
somehow and by this relationship not being told in the trailer gives the audience a
chance to interpret it however they wish.
In Conclusion…
From this trailer I’ve learnt that multiple upbeat music tracks can change the way that you
feel about the trailer. I think that as an audience member I would want to see the film
although when I saw it, it turned out that my predictions weren’t all correct. This goes to
show that by only showing small parts which are quite open-ended, this engages the
audience as they want to make their own assumptions.
12. ‘John, wake up, I heard a scream.’ Unlike the previous trailers this one doesn't start with
non-diegetic music.
Handheld camera in this section tells the audience that the film as a whole is jumpy and
scary.
The fade to black transitions between each glimpse of the film suggests to the me that
this is common in thriller films as i haven't seen this technique in the other trailers.
The over the shoulder shot of the women saying ‘you're covered in blood’ then triggers
a loud siren sound (non-diegetic music.) This to me solidifies my understanding that a
trailer needs to include either diegetic music or non-diegetic music so the audience
can have a feel of what the film is going to be about.
Low key lighting in the trailer shows that it's a dark twisted film and therefore tells me
that it is something we need to counter for when filming our trailer.
The editor of the trailer includes bright flashing light in between scenes, this shows that it’s
jumpy and also goes very well with their chosen genre.
13. The eerie sound drone when the camera zooms into the doll's face with blood on it
suggests that the dolls have a big connection with the film and that it is a big factor.
There is then silence where the indents are flashed on screen, which is a different
approach to present indents as previously they have been at the end or at the very
start.
‘From Producer James Wan’ is show in thin, white, text on top of a dark patterned wall
paper with blood dripping down it. This shows to the audience that it is a scary film and
by choosing this type of layout the audience can decide whether or not they would want
to go and watch it.
Diegetic music which then turns into non-diegetic music links the whole trailer together.
The shot reverse shot of both a close up of the doll and the main women suggest that
these two charters will be connected some how in the film, leaving the audience
wanting to know How? Why?
14. Silence in this film trailer has a very big effect on the audience as it makes
people jump and it creates an eerie atmosphere.
Like the previous trailers they seem to include parts of the film, but only small
sections as the audience needs to ne hooked, for example their is a long shot
of the women on the floor and someone dragged her back. The audience will
wonder things like What is she doing? Who's pulling her? etc...
In Conclusion…
I think that thrillers like ‘Annabell’ rely on music in order for their genre to be clear to the
audience which is why this will be a crucial stage in the process of making a trailer. I haven’t
seen this film but I do think that from watching the trailer it has influenced me to do so as it
didn’t give too much away but enough for me to bee hooked.
15. Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging-
Genre: Coming of Age/Drama
Year Released: 2008
Trailer length: 2:02
Website:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=mEVQt3dg1_w
16. This trailer is completely different to the others. There is a main narrator reading the bold
writing on screen(voice-over), eg. ‘How to Make an Entrance.’ The writing on screen is
presented in the style of a girl's diary, this shows that the film is aimed at teenagers.
The non-diegetic music once again comes in at the starts and also so does the indents.
In this trailer there's so much match on dialogue, for example, the voice-over man says
‘How to Flaunt it’ then their is a two shot of the main character and her friend flaunting
it.
Establishing shots are also key in this film as they are near the beach and the pier.
Unlike the previous trailers this trailer includes diegetic music but then is a sound bridge
until the end of the film.
The title is presented at the end but it’s followed by a close-up of the main character
Georgia saying ‘Thank You and Goodnight!’
17. From this trailer the screen time on the main character Georgia makes us as
the audience realize that the film will be in her POV and some of the things
she says will be over exaggerated. We can also assume this as the diary
includes screenshots of pictures of her throughout the film, this implies that
we are in her diary collectively making the assumption that we will be
following her around and learning about her life.
In conclusion…
This film is much older than the other trailers which is why I wanted to talk about it.
Nowadays it’s common for the main character to do a voiceover whereas in this film Georgia
does it but there is also an external narrator reading what is written on screen. I've learnt that
this can be effective as it makes things stay in your head. From watching this film previously,
once again trailers as a whole have shown that the order can be changed to make the film
seem better than it is. This film has also made it clear to me that music is a vital process
which we need to take time with when it comes to us selecting our piece of music.
18. What my research has taught me about trailers:
Trailers last 2-3 minutes
Most contain the title at the end
Music is vital
Showing small sections in order for the audience to make a bigger picture
Voice-overs can be effective
The order of the film doesn't have to be the same in the trailer, sections can be placed
before others to make it look like there's been a twist which will only make sense if you
watch the film.
Older/more dated trailer tend to go with a male speaking in the background as a voice-
over whereas modern film like the idea of using the dialogue from the film to put into the
trailer.
19. Areas for Further Research:
I need to watch a variety of trailers in order to make an overall judgement of
what trailers need to include.
I need to look into specific genres to know if the genre affects the way the trailer
is presented.
How much information given to the audience to let them know what the film is
about but still leaving them on a cliffhanger.
The importance of a voice-over.
