2. This is a powerpoint I have created to
analyse my top three favourite film
trailers, they are all different genres and I
have explained why my trailer has been
chosen, why it is effective and how it
entices the audience to watch the film.
3. Watch the trailer: Lucy
The genre of this film is very distinct its a clear Sci-Fi Thriller and this can be highlighted by
the use of music and special effects so the audience can make a clear distinction.
The music used in this film trailer is very synth based especially on the clips and scenes
where special effects have been chosen.
Throughout the film trailer there is one prominent character in every clip the audience
guess this is Lucy, played by Scarlet Johansen, this makes the film trailer highly accurate
in showing the main characters without giving away too much detail. This actress is very
popular in Hollywood so fans of hers will immediately be enticed to watch the film after
watching the movie trailer.
The film trailer shows various shots of the film in non chronological order along with short
shot geration and a fast pace of editing this enhances the thriller aspects of the film.
I have chosen this film trailer because I think that it is very abstract and contrasting
against other film trailers. The conventions and rules within the film trailer are original
however the contents of the film is different to general film trailers.
This film trailer is effective because it really captivate the viewer and leaves them
memorised and pleasantly shocked therefore it fulfilled its aim to make people watch
the film.
The trailer contains many exclusives and exciting parts of the film however it does not
give away the full storyline therefore leaving the viewer with a sense of mystery
furthermore this entices them to watch the film.
4. Watch the trailer: Blow
The genre of this film is very different compared to others this is what
makes the film trailer stand out. The use of voice over helps convay the
biography part of the genre. The film genre also consists of crime and
drama this is highlighted with some explicit scenes within the film trailer
e.g the stealing of the plane or the drug money.
In the first half of the trailer all the main characters are prominent
however the audience does not know this as there is no character titles.
Some titles are used towards the last third of the film trailer, they have
black backgrounds and white writing this is to make them stand out but
also the film is mostly based on cocaine therefore a lot of thought has
been put into thinking of the colour scheme.
2 minutes into the film trailer character titles are employed again based
on a black and white background with a white line which enhances the
point I made earlier on the content and basis of the film. The character
titles are in order on importance e.g Johnny Depp is the main important
character as he is displayed first (also bringing a huge amount of
audience to the film as he is a very successful actor) followed by
Penelope Cruz and Franka Potente.
5. Watch the trailer: Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl
Typically Disney films are for families to watch or for children however because of the
way the director has conveyed the genre and the screenwriters have written witty
features the film Pirates of the Caribbean can be watched by near enough anybody.
The film consists of major Hollywood names some would argue that this is the unique
selling point of the film however after watching the film the way it is cleverly written, it is
an easy and very enjoyable watch for everyone.
The start of the trailer consists of imagery in sepia this suggests that the film might have
flashbacks or previews later dates back in time. The film trailer starts off in chronological
order parallel to the film.
The soundtrack is underplayed in the start of the trailer this is because the character
voice over is of prominent use however as the film trailer progresses shot duration
becomes shorter and the soundtrack builds up and becomes louder almost like a
crescendo to enhance the tension and excitement.
The main character who is Captain Jack Sparrow played by Johnny Depp does not
appear in the trailer until 40 seconds in, this is used to heighten his importance. He later
introduces himself in the character voice over 50 seconds in. The shots then cut straight
to his face.
2 minutes into the trailer the film titles are produced this is so they can stick in the
audiences mind.
