Trailer
1. Trailer
Trailers are video based advertisements used to promote the movie they are an abbreviated
format of the movie that don’t give away too much about it, leaving the end a mystery and
the audience curious and excited for the movie they normally go on until they reach the
2:30 mark so as to keep it short and sweet. Trailer showcase the main characters to the
audience and in doing so get us to relate to them.
Trailers use to be shown at the end of a feature film that’s how
they gained their name as they trailed behind at the end of
movies however when people were able to leave the cinema
before the trailers started, they started being put at the start of
the movie so that people would have to watch it before the
movie started.
Film production logos can link movies
together allowing the audience to find
new movies that may be as good as the
last few from the same production
company. The production logos benefit the trailers like this as it
acts as a direct link to other good movies e.g. DreamWorks have
a reputation for being family friendly movie makers and this logo
shown in the movie makes the audience think of all the other
movies that they’ve created, the way in which the logo changes
to demonstrate the mood of the movie e.g. the Warren Bro’s in the Harry Potter got darker
and darker as the movie went on. Another example is the ‘rings’
Film titles are also presented in every movie trailer and is normally
shown by the end of the movie to add to the mood of the trailer, if
the audience see it at the end after watching the Trailer they are
more likely to remember it as the trailer has interested them in the
movie. An example is Kong: Skull Island the back drop colour and
the font as well as the font colour allow the audience to get a feel for the
genre of the movie furthermore the Font is specific to this movie and so
it’s a clear identifier for the audience.
Another example is Run all night a
chase movie starring Liam Neeson the
back drop is a dark train station with
bright graffiti like font.
Age certifications are used in Trailers to warn the audience of sexual
behaviour or violence as well as gore and jump scares/ graphic scenes
with swears and cursing they’re basically a way to classify the audience
that can watch it using age to separate the groups just to tell the audience
2. if they don’t go for this type of movie they shouldn’t watch it or
vice versa they may enjoy the movie they’re watching. The movies
are classified using a chart of age ratings the chart on the side is
used by the ‘British Board of Film Classifications’ (BBFC). The first
trailers presented do not show the age certification as it is yet to be
shown and classified by the BBFC however there is a way you can
rate it without the certification being shown it could be by looking at the
trailer and searching for swear words, violence, sexual content etc. if it
does not have this it is below 12A if it does it is above a 12. In American
trailers they use the green band and the red band however in England
they give a warning of the age groups which can watch the movie.
Another convention of filmTrailers is to add website URL’s and social media sites such as
Twitter, Instagram or Facebook even a hashtag e.g. Kong Skull Island’s Hashtag
#kongSkullIsland. Social media it the best way to market the production out to a large
diverse amount of people in a short and if done correctly it will be largely effective as it will
start being spread by word of mouth, Twitters popularity
guaranties that millions of people will find out about the
movie through the trailer another example is ‘run all night’
starring LiamNeeson.
Music is seriously important in trailers it’s a key feature for example in
Kong: Skull Island the beginning song ‘Credence Clearwater Revival -
Bad Moon Rising’ this sets the scene and gives us a feel for the genre
and the movie budget too, they use this song in ‘Kong: Skull Island’ as soldiers would go to
war and play songs like this to keep them strong and hopeful you could say it was a tradition
for the soldiers to do so this trailer uses them again to set the approximate year they are in,
the music is also used to show the equilibrium that everything is ok then when the music
changes it shows the breaking of the equilibrium then the realisation then the attempt to
repair.
Voice overs are common in movies such as the ‘ring’ to guide the audience in
the plot or just to emphasize a certain point in the trailer example of this
would be that the ring’s voiceover repeats the words “seven days” it’s both
for the character and to frighten the audience in the movie they count down
to the days remaining and this adds to the terror of time running out. The
voice overs are either external voices or dialogue from the actual movie that
overlaps with the footage and adds to its end value.
Name captions are quite common in trailers as they
link to director’s works and if they like the movie
they can look for other movies by the same director
example of this is Tim Burton his name is added to
the trailer as he has a particular way of filming that
stands out from the rest, this is a distinguishing
feature in trailers as the style can lead people to go to the movie. Tim Burton’s corpse bride
3. trailer mentions his name in his classical font style ‘nightmare’. It may not have huge
Hollywood stars to attract attention but they have famous directors that have high
expectation movies.
Star’s appear quite often in trailers an example would be Liam
Neeson his typical masculine and dangerous black ops style of
movie just by seeing him in a trailer you know that it is going to
be an action filled crime thriller. The positives of starring
renowned actors are massive actors can bring in huge profit so
making sure they are showcased well is an important thing as
they can bring in a larger audience by appearing. They are also a
major part of the marketing campaign as they are on posters for
the films, social networking sites and film premieres their image
can highlight the movie and gain the movie more views and
positive advertising. Another example is Morgan freeman in
‘Shawshank redemption’.
Most movies focal selling point is based around the actors who represent
certain characters for example: I love Dylan O’Brien, Logan Lerman and
Morgan Freeman so any movie featuring them is one I’d rush to watch
it’s the same with most people that like certain actors in particular this is
something directors take into consideration when making the movie they
count on audience members being attracted to the actors featured
in them. An example of movies featuring those three are ‘Maze
runner’ (Dylan O’Brien), ‘Lucy’ (Morgan Freeman) and ‘Percy
Jackson’ (Logan Lerman).
The release date is at the end of the trailer much like
the title catching the audience’s attention and urging
them to watch the movie on the set date in cinemas.
They release the trailer close enough to the set date
that it makes them want to watch it in cinemas rather
than releasing the trailer later and having the
audience forget by the intended release date.
In the trailer for ‘City of Bones’ there are a lot of dead black outs
between scenes and the words between scenes have a
shadow like back drop reinforcing the thought of shadow
hunters and an unclear thought process to what’s
happening. The Mortal Instruments City of Bones trailer
begins with a balance normal life that hints at secrets and unnatural
things then the disruption occurs –Jace killing the down
worlder- then we see the recognition to the change in mind of
Clary (another main character) then we see the attempt to
repair / make sense of it all. This whole trailer is supposed to
show mystery and enchantment.
4. A full theatrical trailer will generally run at two minutes in the cinema whereas a TV spot for
a film will usually last no more than thirty seconds. A ‘teaser’ trailer may be as short as ten
seconds hence the name ‘teaser’ trailer arose as it teases the audience with what could
happen making them want to know more.
The general structure of a filmTrailer is the opening of the trailer where the setting and
characters are established to the audience, then comes the build-up where there is
relationships and a development of characters and their worlds, after this a dilemma strikes
the scene and characters as the audience we feel the shift when this occurs the characters
try to overcome the events that have transpired while they do this more problems may arise
to do with this.
In Films it’s different as they use a story telling structure that has the beginning with an
established order and clam that is disrupted somewhere in the middle then is restored by
the end of the film, Trailers are a lot like this except they keep the audience wondering what
has happened and don’t give too much of the problem away so that they have the element
of surprise during the movie we see the bare minimum in the trailer and in the film we find
the definite end of the story may it be positive or negative we won’t be able to tell as the
trailer does not give it away.
The image above shows the most defining points of the filmtrailer conventions there are
many more but these are the most recognisable one’s.
The first trailer ever made / shown was in an American filmtheatre in November 1913, the
advertisement manager Nils Granlund who was advertising for the Marcus Loew theatre
chain produced a short promotional film for the musical “the pleasure seekers”. The term
‘trailer’ comes from the fact that trailers were originally something that “trailed behind” at
5. the end of a feature film screening, though the practice of it being at the end of the feature
films did not last long considering the patrons would leave the theatre at the end of the
movie but the name trailer was stuck and now we have trailers at the beginning of the films
so that they can advertise other films that were soon to be released.
